My Orion is a bit stiffer on the rim and flight plate. The cheek does flex some when thrown hard. Cool roller disc.

As far as Star plastic , I have tested the Star Teebird in two different weights. My white 174 gram is overstable. Almost like Baby whippet stable , it that makes any sense.

My Red 171 is perfect. Flys like my slightly beat 11x Champion version. Still test driving the Star Sidewinder...............thing is fast !!!!!

My white Star plastic , to me , feels like stiff Special Edition plastic. My red , almost , feels like candy / Champion version.

Both have great grip. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I have only thrown champ tl's a few times and would say that the tracker is slightly more stable. These things found a spot in my bag before I even threw them, they just feel sweet in my hand.

As for speed, they don't even come close to the new distance drivers out there but are still fast for a control driver.

I find the Z-Tracker to be MUCH more overstable than a CE TL or CFR TL. It's probably more comparable to a TeeBird as far as stability is concerned...

Aviar Putter (putting blows right now. so what I throw doesn't matter too much. lol)
Z-Wasp
Z-Buzzz
2 Comets (different levels of wear)
Z-Glide (really nice for those shots that are in between mids and drivers)
Z-Wildcat (accuracy drives, long right turns, tailwinds and rollers)
Z-Crush (main driver but not working that great for me right now. very good disc but I may switch to a Z-Avenger.)
Z-Predator (got 2 of them. my beat up one is my favorite disc. I can throw it farther than anything else made.)

Trying that Wraith but have not noticed anything special about it. I am not one to fall into the "hype."

What is the difference between E , H and S plastic ?

The E, H & S represent the different types of plastic that Gateway has available.
S = Suregrip, it is comparable to dx plastic, but perhaps a bit more durable.
H = High Durability, comparable to 10x blend plastic
E = Evolution Pro Line, comparable to Champion and Z plastic.

Different than Champion? If that's what you are asking, then yes IMO. The SB is a little domier and more overstable at first. Not as flat or flippy as my champ orc. It's been put through the works and has no knicks or gashes, just surface scratches, similar to champ durability IMO. Great straight distance driver.

Actually, I would say you need to take a few out of your bag. You already throw too many drivers for someone that probably does't have a lot of power (just guessing because your discs are light).

I can get the tracker, flash and spectre out past 350-375, which I think is ok. When I am driving well, I can throw the buzz farther then all of my drivers with way more accuracy. Yes I would say I lack power and probably snap as well. If I were to get rid of discs, which ones would you say to take out and what if anything would you replace them with?

If you are really throwing 350-375 on average (sometimes we like to exaggerate on the message board), then I think you should not be throwing anything lighter than about 166-168. Not saying you need to be all max weight but the 150 discs are going to be very inconsistant.

While learing, you should try to have 3-4 drivers, 3-4 midrange and 2 putters.

Try the new Star Teebird. That is a very accurate driver that should fly similar to your Tracker. The Flash, Spectra, Orc and Wraith will all do similar things. Their stabilities differ but I suggest throwing all of them to determine which you like the best and sticking with 1 or 2 of them. The Flick is a decent disc but you should try a Firebird or Predator. Test those and see what you like, then pick 1.

For mids, if you like the Buzzz, you should try a Z-Wasp. It is a more overstable mid and will complement the Buzzz really well. Also get a Buzzz in D plastic. After getting the D-Buzz a little beat up, you should have 3 midrange that all have similar grips and speeds. They would cover all the stability differences you need and would handle almost any midrange shot you come across.

Keep that Crystal Challenger if you are using it for shorter upshots. It is really good for that but I would try a Soft APX or an Aviar Putter instead of the Z-Putt'r. The Z plastic can cause some really inconsistant releases out of the hand. Regular plastic is best for putting.

I would have to agree with most of that, and no I wasn't exaggerating about the distance. Distances were taken on a polo field with a laser range finder and a gps to back it up.

My main drivers are quickly becoming the tracker and the spectre. I use the challenger strickly for upshots and drives out to about 250. The 150 flick is use only for thumbers and spike hyzers. The stratus for rollers. The Z putt'rs at this point won't be replaced and will stay in the bag for putting only (putting is my strong point, it is my drives that are weak). I do like the idea of a couple of buzzzes with different plastic. I also like the idea of the wasp to replace the light storm. I will give that a try and see what happens, I don't want to carry more then 9 discs during a round, so I will go practice it all at the field.

dannyreeves
Dec 22 2005, 02:24 PM
Yeah those recommendations before do not have to be followed exactly. Just a overall guideline.

If you like the Stratus for rollers, that is great. Also try it for your understable midrange shots. If that works well, you may not need a D-Buzzz.

I really do think you should try to keep all discs in the same weight range. I would say for drivers, get them in the upper 160's, mids and putters in the lower 170's.

Z-Wasp
Z-Buzzz
Stratus
Challenger
Putt'r

Those should do everything you want within about 275-300' and the Stratus would be your roller.

Throw in about 4 drivers and you have everything you need. When going for the super-distance discs (Orc, Wraith, Spectra, Avenger), you should give a lot of discs a try but don't keep too many in your bag at the same time. It can be really hard to be consistant when you have 3 or 4 high speed drivers that fly very similarly. Disc selection can become a problem.

good luck

Yea that is a ton of overlap. I wouldnt know what to throw.

My bag right now:

1 Z Flick
2 Champ Firebirds (1 CE)
2 Champ Orcs
2 Champ Teebirds
2 CE Leopards
1 SB Roc
1 Beat KC Roc
1 KC Aviar (driving putter)
2 Soft Wizards (putting putters :D)

I also have a couple random utility discs in my bag, but I'm learning those shots with other discs and taking them out. The only real overlap I have is with my flick and firebirds... And the flick is so much more overstable I only use it to get out of trouble. Thats never leaving the bag.

doesn't your bag wear out a lot faster with that many discs?

don't you spend too much time choosing what disc to throw? (rather than on executing)

Well after my ankle/foot surgery in October I have been in rehab. I have been able to play though. I have to take it easy and can't really throw to hard to prevent myself from following through to hard. I'm hoping to be 100% within 2 more months. That's what the doc says. So I have been working on my putters and rocs mainly.

Here is my setup now.

I know. I've got to shed some of it but . . . which ones? I'd like to cut it down to ten but it's hard to do once you've learned how to use them.
Some of them I don't even use unless it's really windy, maybe I should just leave those in a "windy-day" bag in the car. I could probably get rid of either the Sidewinder, Roadrunner, or Stingray. It can be done, I'm just lazy though. What I really need to do is move up so I don't get stuck with so much plastic. ;)

Well, I have been working on my game pretty hard the last few days and really want to get fine tune my skills before playing a couple tournaments next month. I decided that I was also hurting my consistancy by throwing some whako discs.

I revamped:
2-3 Wizards
Z-Wasp
4 Rocs
X Avenger (Roller)
2 CE TL's (pretty much anything I can't reach with a Roc)
Pro Wraith (distance only)
2 Z-Predators

I am gonna try out the Star Wraith this weekend may change that out for the Pro. I also want to check out the Star FX when it comes out to replace my really overstable Predator and I may throw a Z-Talon instead of my beat up Pred (or just have that lined up for a backup if I lose it).

I think that bag setup will be a lot more consistant for me. I was throwing too many different kinds of discs with different feels. It complicates things.

180 E Element-X: straight to understable midrange
182 E Element: understable midrange
17? US-1 Prostyle: float/flare putter
Arrow, unknown weight: straight-line putter

The star wraith is doing for my long game what the evolution sabre did for my sub-300 game. It'll do anything as long as I don't need a sharp turn.

The optimizer isn't in my bag at the moment because I left it on a course and a friend has it. He doesn't think of it as an actual disc so he didn't remember to give it to me last time he had the chance. But that's ok because he traded me a star wraith for a champion monster I wouldn't have used anyway.

i liked the champ starfires but ran out of them, i just got the star wraith a few weeks ago and its the only wraith i liked
in short it just has ridiculous distance(i almost 3'ed a 1000 footer this past weekend with 2 airshots) and i can throw it flat and count on its stability
This is a spot in my bag that i dont really use around here, normally just throw teebirds, but if i need some huge d this disc is easy to control, if i had some champ starfires or 1st run orcs i would probably still throw them but i dont have any $$ to spend on discs so im using what i got for free

My players bag custom made with 2 sets of water bottles in each end ( no duual strap)bag has changed some lately so I thought I would post.
175g Green Nike E Spirit, as good of a headwind driver ever made, wont even think about flipping even into a 30- MPH head wind, but broken in enough to stay flat at 55 MPH and almost never loses velocity or rotaion on 8-10 second 400' plus flights.
172 Glow E spirit broken in for slight hyzer flip low or reverse right out of the hand whne thorw a littlle higher.
1- tuned like a piano 172g Yelow firm domey, E illusion, Hyzer flips medium height or hyzer all the way bombs of 425 plus.
The biggest roller disc on the market hands down!
176g Sabre money maker goes where I throw it and only where I throw it, not a fancy disc but accurate and controllable at a wide range of speeds and heights,
1 Beat S glow sabre flip ups on wooded holes and control rollers.
175 g E hybrid ( most recent thin flight plated retooling.
This disc has gone well over 425 and takes a bit of an arm to keep it from being overstable at the end.
I think I need to get it beat a bit more and it may replace some of the discs, especially on lower ceiling shots.
2 E lements one is a bit flippy and the other is a bit more stable, both 180g.
178g E element-X from the latest runs of some of the orange transluscent, very grippy and tacky for this CEisch blend, they are also beefy overstable, but still vey controllable.
174g S blaze slightly beat and very straight, the elements are pushing out the blaze but it may change when it gets warmer out.
175 Glow medium/firm Wizard overstable
173 H wizard very Straight and in the H doesnt get effected by the cold at all!
174 Glow Medium kind of beat for turn overs.
I 175 gram RUBBER ERASER red proto wizard.
Just broke out this baby after 2 years in a box and I cant seem to miss with it.
The new Titan Bakstes are a big help with the putting as well. I have ony seen 1 or 2 spits in about 30 rounds.
For those how have putted in it I'm sure you will agree.
A few towels, pencils and sharpies, 2 nalgen bottles.

yeah, here in NC there are only a few courses that are long wide open holes where he would need a starfire

Jacksonville(parts)
Zebulon(parts)
Cedarock(majority open)
Renny Gold(majority open)

The rest of the courses in NC, Jackie Smalls can throw teebirds and reach most of the holes

well the champ starfires are slightly more overstable than the CFRs

I have a Champion Starfire in my bag and it is the most overstable disc in there. When I throw it flat, I always get that sharp, sweeping hyzer at the end of the throw. I get great skip shots with it, too.

175g Green Nike E Spirit, as good of a headwind driver ever made, wont even think about flipping even into a 30- MPH head wind, but broken in enough to stay flat at 55 MPH.

I don't have anything that stays stable in a 55mph wind.

I figure if a tropical storm is coming. I will just stay inside. :D

I am going to be novel and organize my discs by speed for everyone not interested :)

Z-Avenger (teebird replacement) Tsunami (long roller) Z-Predator (long drives) Z-XL (long range comet & short rollers) Z-Xtreme (utility and trick shots) KC-Roc (overstable mid) Z-Comet (long drives) X-Comet (understable mid) Pro Challenger (putt, approach & short drives)

That is what I carry for tournaments, for non-tournament play, I carry about half of that depending on the course.

I've also been looking for an extremely understable midrange to replace a D-wasp that I have beat to crap over the years, I want to find something that is that stiff and that understable when it's brand new, closest thing so far I've found is the Stratus, but it's plastic isn't very stiff. I have probably thrown every single disc made in the last couple years, but nothing comes to mind. I just want something I can buy and have it fly like I want out of the box, no beating necessary.

Try an optimizer... may not be stiff enough but it will be understable enough for sure... the other idea would be a hard magnet, you will put it on the anny line and it will stay there. :D

stingray...champ version(or even star)

Boneman
Feb 28 2006, 12:18 PM
Star Stingray, firm, but not as firm as an X Wasp. Slow but very understable, probably won't go as far as a broken in Wasp.
CH or Pro Cobra. Mine are not as firm as an X Wasp, but they aren't soft. Faster than a Stingray, less understable than a Stingray, more glide and a little fade. Should go as far as a Wasp.
Z Glide? If you want Discraft, this is their understable mid-range that fit's the bill. Pretty firm, long and they don't take very long to break in and get flippy IMO. Some people love them ... some don't.
It's going to be hard to find another disc that is as firm as an X Wasp, and flies like one that is broken in. You might just have to buy several X Wasps and start breaking them in, and rotate them so you have several that are broken in. What about DX Rocs? Depends on where you play, and what you want to throw I guess.

PS. Sorry, I just realized you said "D" Wasp. I still suggest getting several X Wasps and breaking them in. They will last longer once they are broken in.
What about trying a "D" Buzzz?

ryangwillim
Feb 28 2006, 12:35 PM
The magnet won't work for what I need. The Champ stingray is not understable enough, and not stiff enough. I can't remeber throwing an optimizer, but I might give it a go, if it is still in regular production.

X-wasp is too stable, My D-Wasp that I am referring to is almost broken understable, like totally trashed, never hyzer back at the end no matter what angle you release it at, understable. I might give the D-buzz a throw or two, I wonder if they make D-Breezes?

Boneman
Feb 28 2006, 01:01 PM
I'm pretty sure they don't make the Breeze in D plastic.

A D Buzzz will break in faster than a D Wasp. But it's not going to be as understable as you want it to be when it's new.

Have you tried a Banger GT?

Yes, I'm not very fond of the GT. I think I'm gonna try the D Buzzz. Throw it into a chainlink fence for a few hours then see if it's what I want ;)

Have you tried an S Element? The one I'm throwing is the flippiest disc in my bag. It's definitely stiff. Probably stiffer than anything else you guys have listed and definitely holds a turnover. I am throwing a 174g (kinda light since they go to 182-83, can't remember). If you get one for turnover be sure to get S because the ones in E plastic are totally different discs as far as stability.

Just my $.02, hope it helps.

THanks. Which mold/plastic starfire(s) did you have in your bag when you won worlds?

i had a x out champion starfire in there but im not sure what the mold was. i think it was the original mold, it was money but i threw it in on my 3rd shot on hole 5 at USDGC it was too stable for Flagstaff though, i was throwing a flippy 2nd run 171 orc for the shots i would use the champ starfire on in Raleigh.

1x JK 4x (Hyzer drive/approach and jump putting)
Mids:

1x MIdnight Buzzz (new.. beating in to replace my 1st run buzzz)

1x Starwinder (hyzerflip and turnover)
3x DX teebird (flat/hyzer/anny)
1x Champ orc(long hyzer.. trying out orcs for the first time)
1x Candy Firebird

I think the champ orc will fight the long hyzer line better than my 11x teebirds. I love the champ stingray and have gotten some amazing drives with it lately by parking some tunnel shots. I'm also loving the MIdnight buzzz. $15 replacement for a $45+ disc is always good!.. I might switch over to a KC AViar and then i can take out the classics and the JK aviar.

CE Spider (x2 - one is a backup)
11x KC Roc

The Surge replaces the Orion LS which replaced the Pro Starfire which replaced the Viking. Haven't used it in a tourney yet, but early results make it the big boomer in the bag.

I play with some other stuff too, but this is the main load out. I think I can take out the Sidewinder, but I want to put in another Roadrunner. The Roadrunner has made me an instant roller-master! I'm finding that my hot-pink Roadrunner is starting to explore places on the course that shots don't usually reach off the tee...!

Oh yeah...DX Wraiths are the SHIZZZZ! Put down the Pro, cut up the Champion, and stop it with the Star... The DX is where it's AT!

Here is my setup for the year. I like carry backups of my main discs in the my bag. I don't really see myself making in changes except to maybe take out the orc.

2 Star Wraiths, 167 and 170- Ones for distance and the other is for long hyzers until it gets a little beat in
2 Star Tls, both 170- Straight to slight turnovers
CE Eagle 170- Hyzers
Champ Firebird, 175- Overstable, Utility, Get out of trouble shots
X-XS 165- Big turnovers and the occasional roller
175 SB Orc- Longer hyzers, skip shots, wind, I find myself throwing this one very infrequently and i may take it out eventually

180 KC Roc- Overstable, Wind
1 new 180 DX Roc- just put it in to start breaking it in
1 newish 180 DX Roc- straight shots, thrown more than any disc except my putter
1 used 180 DX Roc- backup, straight to turnover
1 beat 180 DX Roc- turnover

2 175 KC Aviars- almost all approach shots under 250, money for shorts hyzer upshots, windy putts
2 175 Aviar putter- I can putt with either one, one is newer for short straight shots, the other is real beat for turnovers

150g JK Aviar is a very strange beast. So floppy that it (no exaggeration) droops over your hand. It's stable enough to like a pretty good rip, and for any "touch" shots under 200 ft, it is a point-and-shoot wonder, holding any line (including severe hyzer). I basically use it for downwind or uphill app/putts & doubles mad go4it runs & quite like it. I can't wait to take it to Japan as my putter.

Apr 27 2006, 09:15 PM
Only really use it for wide-open crushes & big rollers, so it hasn't made acquaintance with many trees. That being said, it's been in my bag for 3-4 weeks (4-5 rounds/week) & displays pretty much the early slight turn w/ late slight fade flight as when it was new. It does continue to skip pretty seriously after first contact if I throw my preferred low liner.

veganray
Apr 27 2006, 09:17 PM
I've only ever seen one, and its in my bag. I asked John Ahart, and they are also unheard-of in Japan (land of the 150s, oh yeah, and the rising sun). Maybe ask Dave . . .

I've got a 150 Bulldog that flies pretty similarly & I used to use in similar situations, but it lacks that oh-so-floppy-and-rubbery feel.

Ray-

Your experience with the DX Wraith is the same as mine, although I'm throwing the heavy ones...

I suspect I might have a little difficulty picking up one of your lite-weight biscuits and making it do tricks, but your descriptions sound like the same results I'm having.

I can't stop praising this new DX plastic enough! It's soooo stiff, yet soooo grippy! My first DX Wraith, put in the bag ~1 week after release, is just starting to flip into a headwind if thrown with hyzer. It's still a money hyzer-flipper in the calm though...

I forgot to mention - it's been run over by a car once at hole 18 @ Shillito Park in Lexington.

I LOVE THE DX Wraiths!! Bring on the DX TeeRex!

Played my best round of the year today with 4 discs.

4x JK pro Valkyrie (bar stamp)
1st run white Champion Edition Eagle EL
Ace Race GLIDE
Aviar

I threw the ace race glide for 9 of the drives, the valk for 7 and the eagle for 2. Managed a 52 at Knob Hill today which is my best round at that layout for the year.

Reminded me of the old days 10 years ago when I started playing the game. It was awesome. Especially since I had only ever thrown the Glide during the Ace Race. I think I really like that disc. Got me 3 2's out of 6 birdieable holes.

I have carried everything at one point or another, and with all the new plastic out, my bag has been a bit experiemntal - but heres whats in it right now.

DX Aviar - stable, main putter
DX Aviar - beat in, turnover approach/drive
Star Aviar - stable, 200-250 backhand driver
Champ Gator - forehand approach
Z Buzzz - strait, 200-400 control backhands

10X KC Pro Eagle - stable, backhand hyzers
11X KC Pro Eagle - strait, backhand control
Champ Eagle - strait, backhand rollers
CE Eagle-L - flippy, backhand/forehand rollers
Star Starfire - stable, number one forehand driver
CFR Starfire - strait, number two forehand driver
CFR Starfire - flippy, forehand roller, turnover
Star Teebird - strait, backhand distance
Champ Teebird - stable, distance hyzers
Star TeeRex - stable, backhand max d
Star TeeRex - stable, forehand max d
KC Pro Banshee - stable, forehand control
KC Pro Gazelle - strait, long forehand approach
Pro Wraith - flippy, super long turnovers (450+)
Glo Champion Orc - stable, distance alternative
Champ Firebird - stable, forehand hyzer
Champ Firebird - crazy stable, specialty disc

Yeah - I carry a lot of discs, and it looks like I have multiple of each type of throw, but I assure you, they perform differently and I am very atune to their flights. That and I'm a disc fiend.

Jun 11 2006, 08:10 PM
and only 2 midranges??? as long as you can carry them :). I used to carry like 22 discs, but that was also with 6 putters and 5or6 midranges :).

as long as it works for you.. that's all that matters.

If you can throw a buzz 400, why do you have soo many drivers in the bag and one midrange?

Jun 11 2006, 09:05 PM
Dion throws pretty darn far. I tend to not think that these are not message board distances.

Jun 11 2006, 09:17 PM
still doesnt answer the question.

I wouldn't presume to answer for him. I've just seen him throw. :D

OK, haven't done this in a while.

Start from the bottom.

Omega AP (New version) - for approaches and out of my groove putts.
JK 3x Aviar - Main putter. drives and approaches.
Champion Aero - **** good disc. drives up to 300, downhill drives up to infinity. putts and approaches, especially in the wind.
Rubber Shark - Anything straight to slight turnover.
Champion Glo Coyote - straight to hyzers.
2003 CE Roc - straight shots and windy drives
Champion Stingray - straight tight shots. uphill shots.
Star Stingray - flippy mid-range.
Champion Roadrunner - turnover driver.
Champion Leopard - straight to slight turnover drives, tailwind drives.
Star TL - whereever I want it. But man, I just don't pull it out enough.
Star Wraith - booming drives.
Nightshift Orc - long straight hyzers.
Champion Starfire - Big hyzers.
Champion Monster X - Most overstable in the bag
Star TeeRex - big booming drives I need to finish right.

Always have a couple FlyDry towels on board too.

My new setup (all max weight):

Always in the bag:

1 Cam Todd Challenger - putter
2 10x KC Aviars - 1 beat, 1 new - < 250'
1 10x Roc - beat - 250' - 325' turnovers
1 Champion Coyote - new - possibly being replaced with the Star - under 350' anhyzer/straight/hyzer
1 Champion Teebird - og Champion plastic - 325'+ straight/turnover
1 11x KC Teebird or Star Teebird - new - 350'+ hyzers/straight/sidearms
1 Birdie Bag - used on 99% of my throws when its humid

Additional discs I may add depending on the course:

1 Pro Starfire L - new - possibly being replaced with the Star - pretty much everything over 400'
1 Champion Teebird TL - super flippy og Champion plastic - rollers, hyzer-flip, late anhyzers
1 10x Roc - new - 275' - 350' hyzer/straight

After taking a decent amount time away from disc golf I found that throwing a small number of discs that I know well works best for me, I think there are many others out there that could benefit from reducing the number of discs they carry.
