the "CA" and "CAL" represent the INitials for California on the BOTTOM of the disc... ALL current Innova discs have the location on them.
Secondly it is surely a CE TL x-out then.

Thirdly, very cool that your boy hooks you up with cool plastic. WIsh i had someone with the hookups so i could find more 11x teebirds :)

I think I'm at the stage when I'm about ready to weed out a few discs from the bag, but for right now I've got...

max weight champion firebird
max weight champion banshee
max weight champion orc
max weight champion beast (will probably drop)
max weight pro starfire
max weight champion valkyrie
172g champion viking (may drop)
171g champion sidewinder
max weight CFR TL
max weight pro gremlin
max weight CE spider
max weight CFR x-out classic roc
172g champion gator
max weight champion rhyno
2 170g aviar-x's
164g blowfly 2 (mostly for catch at tournaments)

but yeah, I like everything in the bag, there's just some overlap and time to get rid of a few discs.

May 23 2005, 02:34 PM
I've seen tons of TL's, they were made in champ plastic and sold as CFR discs......CFR plastic is the same as champion, they just charge (make you donate) an arm and a leg for it.

May 24 2005, 06:00 AM
Changed my bag a little here it goes:

1 CE FireBird Fx - Hyzer and headwind
3 Kc TeeBird - Driver
3 Dx Roc - overstable, straight and turnover
2 Dx Rhyno - One for short throws and one for approach
1 Aviar putter - Putting and straight approach

Lots of changes there, i think the rhyno i mutch easier to release then the big bead aviar. and with the sentinel i dont have that accuracy as i have with the rocs, that better explain the changes :)

174g Ce firebird

174g Cfr starfire

170g uv challenger
I just started using the gazelle and was surprised at how far it goes. In fact I seem to be able to throw it just as far as my other drivers. I tried dx gazelles and did not like them but the champion gazelle is very predictable. 150g aviar in calm conditions is a great long putter.

*1 178g Green H Element
1 175g White E Wizard
1 175g Blue S Med. Wizard
1 174g Blue H Wizard
1 175g White SS Wizard

Update:

The TL was lost on hole 17 of Walnut Ridge in Johnston, IA (I swear it looked like a perfect throw but the disc was nowhere to be found). I doubt it will be replaced.

The QJLS is collecting dust since I've been learning the Sabres more. I like it too much to take it out of my bag, though.

I gave the H Element to a friend who was playing for the first time and he lost it on hole 6 of Heritige Park in Ankeny, IA (no real loss, I didn't like it anyway) and replaced with an S Element that's collecting dust. It's there in case I need a disc for a beginner. I'll probably replace that with another E Element as a backup if I play in a tournament.

The H Element-X was taken out for a E Element-X. The S Element X had an encounter with some asphalt and now it's officially "perfectly" seasoned.

The E Spirit and H Illusion are pretty similar at the moment. They resist turn, fade hard and go far. They're great into a headwind and for sidearm shots. This will be an interesting grudge match to see which one gets used the most.

I added a somewhat beat S Spirit that acts kind of like the new E Speed Demon. I use the Spirit the most (mostly overstable headwind or sidearm shots) but that's mostly to get it beat in more. I'd like to keep it until it gets thrashed to see what happens. They're also both great for 'tweener distance flex shots with huge skips.

I'm trying to beat the DX Viking into a long turnover driver. It may also be a distance roller if I ever learn how to roll.

The Blaze is getting more and more beat and may need a partner. I've heard good things about the newer, clearer E Blazes.

The clearer E Sabre is kind of hard to find sometimes. I aquired another white one so I may put that on in instead as a backup.

The Wizards are holding their own really well. I could remove the H Wizard and probably get by, but that's another disc that's in there for luck/sentimental reasons.

I played a few new courses since my last post that really took me out of my comfort zone. It became much more obvious which discs I "need" and which ones probably aren't necessary.

How do your Challengers compare to your Aviar X's ?

Jun 01 2005, 10:57 PM
Willie.. sup dude..
I actually had 4 putters at tinicum.. I had a fools on the hills stamped Aviar, classic aviar, crystal z challenger, and JK Aviar.

Anyway..
I went out today, after being so [I'm a potty-mouth!] off with my play this weekend, And decided i'd play the weekly tags with just 4 discs:
Classic Aviar
JK Aviar
Beat 1st run Buzzz
Beat 11x Teebird.

I haven't thrown so well in a long time.. My throws were great, my putts were on and i think i ended up with the #2 tag.
I was so angry with my throwing recently i figured no need for so many discs as they all fly the same(BADLY). I played really well with just 4 discs and will probably do it again soon.

Keep in touch will and Eric i beat in my JK a little after getting 4 aceruns and 3 basket hits today.

Musta sucked not getting to throw the putters that much at Tinny though. You playing Nocka? I gotta get down with these nick-names... Pennsylvanians (ites?) seem to enjoy them...

Jun 01 2005, 11:08 PM
Shane.. It kinda sucked, but i wasn't throwing well at all at tinicum. I also wasn't putting that great although i had some nice putts that did go in.
I finally got home and practiced with Lesli had told me and i've really changed my putt. I'm a little more consistent, but i don't have to try as hard because i'm using my knees to generate power instead of my arm.

I think i'm just gonna go to a tourney with 4 discs.. maybe i'll do better.. Ron Russell Style!

-Scott Lewis

shanest
Jun 01 2005, 11:31 PM
Definitely gotta give "props" to Russell. It's always good though to go down to the bare minimum to get down with your own form and then just fill your bag back in. And definitely start playing with just one TeeBird so you get one really beat up instead of all of them equally. But who am I to give advice? lol I duno if Nockamixon is the place to play w/ 4 discs or not... but maybe since I heard that all you have to do is hit the fairways...

How do your Challengers compare to your Aviar X's ?

I think the challengers are slightly more stiff than the Aviar. I like having soft putters if I want to use them as an approach or driver. I have issues with gripping and releasing a firm putter for some reason.

Is the Z stuff any good for Putting ?

No, the Z-Challenger is too slick. However it does make a good approach disc. I prefer the cryztal over the Z anyday.

172g Talon- Works as my overstable driver
167g Valk- for long shots on wide open holes. This disc is beat to crap and turns over easily but likes to come back. Great for S-curves.
176g Roc- long approach shots. This is the dx version with the "stable mid-range driver" stamp.
175g Avair- This is in the champ plastic and has a nice reliable fade.
172g Omega SS- A nice soft aviar. I love this disc and my game has improved since purchasing it.

I am a new player but I'm learning fast. What disc do you think would make a good addition to my arsenal? What disc should I get rid of, if any?

I would recommend getting a Leopard. I'm kind of partial to the older Prolines and the SE Leopards, but they are a little harder to find. Great disc for learning control and learning to hyzer-flip. Excellent for tight tunnel shots and turnover shots.

Sorry to bring up old posts, but I love seeing what everyone is throwing these days. Dave, I think many people need to lighten up a little also, but what ever works. My Current set up after tonight is going to be:
2 175 KC Pro Aviars
1 175 Champion Firebird
1 175 Champion Teebird
1 175 Champion Orc
1 180 Champion Shark
1 178 Champion Coyote
1 180 DX Stingray
8 discs total in a Innova Tour Bag which holds over 20 discs, but I like to carry extra goodies (snacks, ibuprofen, water, etc.) Wow, I have no Roc in my bag, replaced by the Coyote. Feels better in my hand and when I miss with it, it is still in decent putting range. The rocs of today are not like the ones when I used to play serious golf, the Coyote is a great disc. Once again, sorry to bring back an old post, but I like to see how peoples bags change due to new plastic cominig out, etc.

Aug 17 2005, 11:49 AM
I TOTALLY agree the Rocs made today arent the same as they were even maybe, 3 years ago. (Im thinking of the DX Rocs and I guess the KC too)

I have been keeping it simple with good results lately.

3 sidewinders: 166 calvert stamp, a little domey and relatively overstable for a winder.
166 sidewinder
165 sidewinder
166 champion stingray
178 USDGC SB roc (have not been using it at all, always the champ stingray, but still need it for "security".)
2 174 champion putters.

That's it!

BTW I am loving the jump putt /msgboard/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

MY bag at a tournament at my Home Course:
2x Classic Aviar
1x JK Aviar-x 4time(super soft)
1x 1st Run Z-buzzz(beat for flat/turnover)
1x Flat top Z-buzzz(flat/hyzer)
1x Z-wasp(Never used)
1x 1st Run X-Avenger (Distance/Turnover)
2x 11x KC Teebirds( Flat/Turn/Hyzer/Flex/ETC)
1x Proline Monster

The wasp was useless as it wasn't windy and the flat buzzz hyzered fine. I only used the X-avenger on 2 holes that i could have just used the Teebirds.

I'd probably add in a CHamp Stingray for courses i don't know just incase i need that distance turnover shot.

Today was a bag changing day!! I lost the DX T-bird at noon league, almost lost the gator at evening league, but the biggest surprise was the TL.

FIRST ACE!!!! I nailed a 300+ foot hole into the wind with the Pro TL. I got the ace pot too!! And won league!!! A $90 night from a $3 entry fee!!! WOO HOO!!!! Plus this means I get to go disc shopping! Gotta replace the TL. It is going on the wall!!!!

Bringing it back from the DEAD!!

anyway.. I've been workign on my technique and decided that since my technique is becoming more consistent i could add a few more discs to my bag.. most are doubles and i probably would play just as well without them, but anyway..
MY BAG:
2x Classic Aviar ------ 174gram.. Turnover Drive, Approach, Push PUtting.
1x JK Aviar-x 4time ------ Hyzer Drive/Approach, Jump PUtt
1x Champion Stingray ----- Obvious... Learning it, but so far no real part in my bag
1x 1st Run Z-buzzz ---- Best disc Ever.. Really Beat, but still Full Spectrum
1x Cryztal Buzzz ----- Overstable Buzzz. Hyzer and Wind
1x 1st Run X-Avenger --- Beat up.. Roller and Hyzerflip.. Still learning it.. Getting a Z version
2x 11xTeebirds --- Best Driver Ever! One is beat for stragith/turn and one is Still new for Flat Hyzer and Hyzer
1x Proline Monster --- Overstable and fast... have had it for 2 years and still stable..
1x CE Firebird FL ---- Just picked this up. SWEET!!!! Still learnign it, but way more overstable than my monster.. Almost useless :)

That's what i have about now.. I will probably start takign more out again, but anyway.

Well, since I just traded that FL to greatsky, I guess I'll chime in with my bag.

CE Teebird 175 for most every drive...it just goes straight
CE TL 175...just got this one in the trade. Seems to glide more than my Teebird but is a little more squirrely. Hoping to turn it into my roller.
Champion Orc 175...still nothing beats this disc for max D as far as I'm concerned. At least without going flippy after hitting one tree (pro starfire)
Special Blend Roc 179...amazingly versatile. Almost the only midrange I need.
179 KC Pro beat to death Roc for annies and finess shots.
2 Aviar X putters...one for upshots and one for putts
1 Aviar glow putter for upshots that just have to finish straight and any short anny shots around trees.
178 Crystal Wasp will be in my possession shortly. i needed a stable midrange that will withstand some crank in a headwind.

All kept in a Black and Grey cooler bag purchased at Walmart for 9.99. The Bag looks like it was actually designed for disc golf. I needed a nice light bag for about 7-10 discs and this thing is perfect. I never liked spending mega bucs on bags so 10.00 bucks is great even if it doesn't work out.

Well, took the Wraith out of the bag today. I can throw this thing about 50-60 feet farther than my cahmpion teebirds, but I have no confidence in it at all. Not enough hyzer, flips over to much. To much hyzer, doesn't flip much at all. I will stick to throwing teebirds 450 feet and accurately, rather than 500 plus feet not knowing where I am going to end up.

Sep 10 2005, 02:39 AM
Ya cant go wrong with a Teebird.... IF you HAVE to be in the fairway, throw a Teebird.

Its the MOST dependable driver Ive ever thrown. I know exactly what its gonna do and end up (If I throw it correctly, which I usually do).

Very nice bag of plastic there. All very predictable discs. There was a guy in another thread saying how the DX rocs are the most inconsistant discs he has ever thrown. To me, the DX roc is the best disc ever made, most consistant, and very player friendly. About the Teebird, it is the best driver out there. If you get a Wraith, wait for the CFR Wraiths to come out. The pro wraiths I have fly pretty nice with any type of tailwind, but are still way to squirly for my liking. It would be nice to have a disc with the flight of a teebird, but the speed and carry of the Wraith, that would be the ultimate disc.

Everyday that goes by I am taking discs out that I just dont need, and or like. Today the Wraith came out, my old beat up DX stingray roller came out, my whippet came out, and my Champion shark came out. I am left with 5 different molds, and am very confident about my bag setup now. When I was a top player in California years ago I threw Rocs, Aviars, and Vipers. Usually carried three of each, I knew these discs and could throw any shot with them. Here is my final bag that I have worked hard to put together, discs that I know, like and can throw all shots with.
2 KC Pro Aviars
1 DX Putt and Approach Aviar
2 KC Pro Rocs (one new and one beat )
1 DX Roc
2 Champion Teebirds
1 Champion Firebird
1 Champion Leopard
The only thing I might add is a DX Teebird for long drives ( 450 feet or more ).

Ok here it goes;

2 "E" Spirits(1 Nike) hyzers and bombing flex shots

1 "H" Spirit low long drives

2 "H" Illusions rollers and anhyzers

1 "E" sabre(lost mine but will replace soon) evrything under the sun straight shots, hyzers, and anhyzers. GREAT DISC

1 "E" hybrid when I need a more controlled disctance 375-450 low ceiliing.

1 "E" Blaze long hyzers, spikes, and midrange flex shots(my favorite along with the sabre).

2 "E" elements one for straight to anhyzers and one that I picked out of the Scrap pile that flies overstable like a blaze.

2 "SS" wizards putting and anhyzer drives up to 325'

1 "E" wizard headwind putt and drives up to 375' /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Dude, throwing a putter 375ft.....that's sick.

But after all, I am jealous, I can only get my mids that far. But I am happy with throwing a Wasp that far, because I am in the top bracket of throwers on midrange distance.

(Remember everyone, I said top bracket, not I am the top, there are a lot of people who can throw mids farther then me, but there are TONS who cannot).

Sounds like a classic case of message board distance.

Its taken me a while to figure out what to throw as well. In the past few weeks Ive taken out quite a bit of stuff I just didnt throw which MAKES me throw the other discs and get more comfortable with them.

It's amazing when you really look at what discs you carry and what type of shots you use them for. I found that I would carry 2 to 3 different discs for the same shot. Ex: Monster & Predator. I liked to side arm both but I liked the Pred for backhand headwind shots better than the Monster. I felt it had more glide. I determined the Pred was more versatile so the Monster came out of the bag. I'm now down to 4 different drivers (Teebirds, Avengers, Predators, Sidewinders) rather than 10 different discs. It's made me become more consistent with my game.

3 dx spiders
ch. gator
3 avengers [2-x and 1-z]
z-pred

these 8 work for me in most all situations. i will occasionally add a stratus for special situations and for shorter, more controlled rollers than my x-avg. am also experimenting with a z-glide for a straight shot longer than my spiders and shorter than the x-avg. have not decided if i need this or not yet

For some reason I throw putter just as far as my mids(if not farther) Actually I hit basket today on a 362'hole today with my "e" wiz.

Right now My Ever-evloving bag contains:

Champion beast - 163
Champion TB - 174
Pro TL - 174
DX Cheetah - 174 (Distance Tommy Disc)
DX Cheetah - 150?(Shorter tommy disc)
Z Wasp - 178
First Run MRV - 175+?
Classic roc - 180

I dont know how long this will stay like this, not long. i just purchaced a firebird to replace my overstable driver position once held by the beast (arms getting stronger now), and i bought a new X MRV in place of the First Run MRV, and i bought Cryztal Buzz, which may be replacing my wasp, and i bought an XL to see if it can earn a place in my bag.

despite the fact that im buying more and more discs, im actually trying to carry as few discs as possible. i have owned about 20 discs, and i have carried as many as 12. i recently gave away about 4 discs, and i will probably take more out in the future.

i see myself in 20 years just carying an MRV :D.....

Recent changes for discs that are more consistent & feel better. Out go Ch Monster, Pro Starfires & Dx Beasts

Currently in: (all ~172-175g, Dx range from old to new)

3-4 Firebirds (1 Ch, rest Dx)
1 Ch Orc -
3-5 Teebirds (1 Pro, rest Dx)
1 Ch Beast

2 Dx Whippets
3-4 Gators (1Ch, rest Dx)

3-4 Rhynos (1 Pro Soft, rest Dx)

Could remove some, but happy with the range this setup offers - easier throws & less compromise.

Then there's the backups....!

Very Long Range...
X Avenger - long straight flips and turnover
Champ Beast - Long Straight, slight fade

Long range
Champ Eagle - lightweight - straight and fade
Z XL - straight and turnover
Glow XL - turnover

Fairway
JLS 1.6 - straight, turnover and roller
S Sabre - straight and fade

Mids
Z Wasp - straight and fade
Element X - straight
Champ Cobra - Turnover and short roller

Putter
E - wizard, and 2 soft wizards

Those are the primary discs... the bag holds more, so I may stuff in a Z-Avenger, Teebird, XS, Valk, Sentinal or a Cheetah ... discs i know and have had for a long time, but another disc does that shot just a touch better for me.

Yes, lots of different molds, but the hand feel is similar between the molds in many cases...(eagle and xl are very similar ... all the mids are claw nosed and beaded)

CE Avair- Yes, the Original. I LOVE THESE!!!
Putt and Approach- One for putting and one for upshots.

Just added a Champ Starfire L so we'll have to see if it deserves to stay.....

I'll play...

1 Pro Wraith - Beat
2 CFR Wraiths - 169, 175. 2 different discs at those weights.
1 DX TeeBird
1 SB Orc
2 Champ Orcs - 1 BEAT
1 Champ Firebird
1 CFR Starfire-L
1 Z Buzzz
1 Coyote (Des Monies Stamp - First Run?)
2 Pro-D Challenger - 1 BEAT, 1 New.
1 Wizard - Super Soft.

I know there's a lot of overlap with the drivers. I'm still learing the game, only been playing since about May. I play by feel, and some of the drivers just feel good on a particular day. Sometimes I take out an Orc and a Wraith, and I can probably do without the Teebird most of the time - especially now that I'm really throwing my mid-ranges well. The Buzz was a recent addition, and it really has taken my game up a notch. The Wizard was a VERY recent addition (TODAY), but I'm REALLY loving it....

Teebirds (11x, TL)
Predators (X)
Sidewinder (Ch)
Rocs (03', SB, Chings)

My rookie bag:

158g & 174g Sidewinders -long drives
168g Q-JLS - long drives - more predictable than my regular JLS
173g Innova Moray(discontinued) my "will always turn right" & tomahawk disc.
171g KC Pro Roc: Short drives & upshots. I just recently discovered how great this disc is.
168g DX Cheetah - for S-Curve shots.
171g DX Gazelle - found this one- I should swap it out w/ my 174g 9x KC Pro Gazelle.
171g Soft Wizard & 165g Omega SS -for putzing.

I've gotten into a bad habit of decorating my apt w/ plastic though....all my cool/collectible discs (now at 7) are hanging on the wall

Anything else I should try? I am trying to buy a Coyote that I can throw (I wont throw my Glow).

I think you need a teebird, I think everyone needs a teebird. Even people who don't throw Innova need a teebird. I think Gateway and Discraft guys would like a teebird. I love my teebird. Its what I throw more than anything else. The first disc I ever won was a 169g KC Pro Teebird with a Yellow and Orange Off-centered Spiral Dye and it still flies the same way as the day I got it. Surprisingly, I've yet to lose it, "knock on wood". Its the disc I throw when I am indecisive, which is alot. And it always seems to be, at worst, a decent shot. I'm sure the Discraft and Gateway guys are gonna jump in and tell you another disc that is "somewhat like" a teebird. And they have good points, but nothing flies like a teebird. If there were a hall of fame for discs, the teebird would be the 1st one selected in.

Nov 11 2005, 12:13 PM
So. You're saying I should try a TeeBird? :D

I do have one but it's one of those full color stamped DX Teebirds.... it's too pretty to throw.lol. It's one of the 7 that are hanging.
I think I will start looking for a Pro Teebird..... Thanks.

(oh. I forgot. I did buy 2 172g Gateway Sabres and they should be here today/tommorow)

Don't get a Pro Teebird, that plastic is worthless. Get a dx teebird, it'll be great for a couple of months and it'll break in slower than the pro. Once you learn it, and if you like it, I would shell out for a Champion, or if they are out, an SB(star) Teebird. I love my SB Teebird, grippy and very durable.

Nov 11 2005, 12:33 PM
Yes, I forgot about the SB Teebirds coming out.....
I knew I was wanting to get one, but was waiting for the SB's.
They should be out really soon.....

I recently lost my teebird, and am awaiting the SB Tees to come out. I have one of the black ones from the Cal tourny, but my luck with black discs is pretty bad.

How stable is your Buzzz ?

Depends on the run, and the mold. The flat ones are really stable. Not like a Wasp, but will hold a straight line thrown hard and finish left.

Domey buzzz's are flip machines! oh yeah

Putters:
1x Classic Aviar.......... (putting and Turnover approach)
1x JK Aviar-x ...............(super soft.. Driving and long putting)
Midranges:
1x 1st Run Z-BUZZZZ...(Everything but big hyzer)
1x Cryztal Buzzz............(Hyzer and windy)
Drivers:
1x 1st Run X-Avenger...(Rollers/Hyzer flips)
2x 11x Teebirds!...........(Everything!)
1x Champion Firebird...(Utility)

The Avengers will get replaced with a dx teebird probably becuase i love the teebird mold.. One of my 11x teebirds took a huge Gash somehow(hopefully the plastic will burn back together) and the more stable one will be replaced by a Star Teebird.
