I real bird was in there nestled inbetween to drivers!!! It was a little finch, flew away strong and healthy this morning.
First post on this board may as well be this one.
2 172g CE TL (main driver, 1 beat, 1 med. beat)
1 169g CE TL (uphill drives)
1 172g CE Firebird FX (side arm S and windy cond.)
1 172g CE Firebird F (side arm, wind, trick approach)
1 173g Z X2 (med headwind)
1 172g 10x KC Banshee (thumbers)
1 172g Z Wildcat (home course is along a 300+ cliff line in chico, ca.. use this in place of TL's cuz if I lose the cat, easily replaced)
1 169g Elite XL (super straight shots)
1 170g CE Valk (roll baby, roll)
1 175g Elite MRV (long approach, short drives)
1 173g Elite MRV (same)
1 175g Proline Gremlin (approach, gets me out of more jams than any other disc)
1 175g CE Big Bead (short approach)

1 171g 3x JK Aviar-x (anhyzer & trick putts)
ziploc bag of filled w. ibuprofen
cliff bar

This is my main bag. I'll swap things in and out depending on course and conditions. My home course is on a huge butte in Chico, CA. This is by far the windiest course I have ever played. The winds get up to ridiculous speed which is always entertaining.

The best thing you can do, as a new player, is learn to throw that ROC! Take only the Roc to your course and play a round with it. See what score you can shoot with only the Roc. Even putt with it.
I think that newer players put the fast drivers in the bag way to early and before they are ready. If you can throw a Roc and putter well, you can throw a driver well. Rocs force you to use the proper technique and to use a good amount of spin.
Well jimg...it is helpful for us newbies who like to see what better players carry.
Locally, I'm considered to be one of the better players (though that's like being the tallest person at a midget convention), and none of the newbies emulate my bag.
When we play from the short tees, I carry an X-Challenger and a Z-Wasp. If it's windy, I'll also carry a Z-Xtra.
Everyone else is carrying all sorts of crazy long range drivers, and the hot, new disc of the week from Innova/Discraft when there's only one hole over 300'.

It doesn't HAVE to be a roc. What Kid_Roc meant to say was "Best thing you can do is learn to throw a WASP" :)
Yeah, I just got the Roc 2 days ago...and by reading a few million posts on here already...I can see that it is a valuable disc. I have to say that I like the flight I'm getting out of it already.
The best thing you can do, as a new player, is learn to throw that ROC! Take only the Roc to your course and play a round with it. See what score you can shoot with only the Roc. Even putt with it.
Good advice. And since I'm not into the whole my-brand-rules-and-yours-[*****] thing, I'd say "take a midrange, any midrange you like, and learn it."
I think that newer players put the fast drivers in the bag way to early and before they are ready.
Yup, but it's an ego thing. Beginers always want to throw far. They see the pros throwing 350'-450' and they want to be able to do the same thing.
I have a Z-Wasp as well ;)
I'm still learning just to throw the discs at all. When I started, I kept dumping discs into the woods, so I went to a Tomahawk style (and therefore bought a sh-load of Z-plastic discs...) I'm a bit of a tinkerer, so I buy a little of everything just to see how it works. It flew nicely, and I dropped about 10 shots off my score in 2 weeks.
But after about 3 months, I started to have serious elbow pain when I threw my drives...culminating in having to throw a few holes in the second round of a glow tournament lefty.
So I am teaching myself a regular RHBH throw...and it's coming along slowly. :) Luckily no more elbow problems...although if I toss a tomahawk wrong...
For the record: my very first round ever, I shot a 74 at Blendon Woods in Columbus...I am now down to a 59 there :)
Although, Hoover is a much longer course...and without much of an arm...I'm still in the mid 70s there. :(

2- aviar x's
3- rocs
2- TL or 10x t-birds [long drives]
2- x predators [more stable, tad longer]
2- h speed demons [overstable]
all on the heavy side
when up at higher elevations here in colorado, i will change my drivers to 165 dx t-birds, 150 dx beasts for distance, and 158 speed demons
Locally, I'm considered to be one of the better players (though that's like being the tallest person at a midget convention), and none of the newbies emulate my bag.
Maybe that's a holdover of mine from traditional golf...I know that if I saw a lot of players using a certain club, I wanted to have that club in my bag, because I believed it would help my game as well.
I'm definitely taking great notice of all the advice I'm getting here.
But I still can't help but buy more discs to try out...it is the gadget freak in me.

Hey Schmack Daddy,
How does that Starfire fly for you? I'm in the middle of switching to Vikings instead of Valkyries (or Beasts sometimes) because I'm turing the understable discs over too often. The Viking flies flatter but just a little shorter than the Valks (by maybe 10-15'). I have a Starfire but I haven't thrown it yet.
I havent really thrown it much.....Seems very "MONSTER" esque.....Very fast, and more over stable than a Viking, for sure....not sure how overstable it really is, because i havent really thrown it very many times.
I havent even played a casual round, that I recall, since I got it....1 tournament, and wasnt really anxious to "figure it out" during that....

In regards to the Starfire...here are my findings.
I have 170g one from the KC Wide Open.
It seems to me that it is somewhere between a Beast and Monster for stability.
The following info is based on RHBH:
It has a slight right turn during the high speed portion of it's flight and then it straightens out and then has a pretty hard left fade at the end. It's an ok disc, but my z-crush seems to fly just the same. So, for about $13 less, you can get a z-crush and pretty much have the same disc as a starfire. Just my two cents worth.

Schmack Daddy,
Cantrell here again. I need some advice from someone who throws Discraft. I'd like to try a long distance driver but don't know which Discraft to buy. I can turn Valkyries over every time and can turn light Vikings over too. So, I would like a slightly overstable to stable driver. I don't really know how to compare the Discraft stability ratings to the Innova discs. I've got friends that have thrown Wildcats and Talons but I don't know the difference. Which do you throw the farthest and straightest? Thanks.

I'd try a Z-Wildcat, a Z-Crush, or a Z-Talon. They are listed in order from least to more stable. See which one feels better in your hand, and performs better for you. I throw primarly RHBH, and am personally throwing the Z-cat for long left to right shots, the Z-Crush for big distance "S" shots, and the Z-Talon for a little less distance than the Z-Crush, but more accurate shots down the fairway.

Cantrell,
I know you directed this question to Schmack Daddy, but I still wanted to add my babble. :)
Just buy one of each!
Talon is more overstable and won't flip over like a Wildcat can from time to time. But seriously, buy one of each, I like talon's better because they won't flip (obviously) but the grip is also different, and it feels very very nice in my hand. I still love wildcat's, but the talon is easily the most predictable long driver I have ever thrown!
cantrell
Nov 21 2003, 11:50 AM
So then the Wildcat is fairly easy to turn over (understable)? What about the XS and XL and Xpress, etc. I want something I can throw as far as a Valk or Beast but that is more stable than both (I'm rhbh also by the way). Is there such a Discraft disc?
ryangwillim
Nov 21 2003, 11:51 AM
ACK ! Hero, you beat me to it by 4 minutes!
ryangwillim
Nov 21 2003, 12:01 PM
Wildcat is not easy to turn over in Z plastic. But it will if you have a cannon arm, or a lot of headwind. If you want something like a Valk with a bit more predictability, try the XS in Z plastic. Or get a moderately lightweight Wildcat. Order is as follows...
Talon - not flippy
Wildcat - usually not flippy with a few exceptions (arm strength, wind, amount of disc wear)
XS - straight, then flippy as it gets beat
XL - flippy
Xpress - quite flippy
I only throw Z plastics for my LRDs, so I can't say much for X plastic, but you might consider an X wildcat, I had one of those and it was very similar to a Valk, but a bit more predictable.
Hope this helps

Hi ryan,
So what's with your pic? Why the headphones? P.I.T., pilot in training?
ryangwillim
Nov 21 2003, 12:27 PM
Exactly!
no, I was just waiting for some ppl and listening to music and a picture was taken. I liked the picture better than most of my other pictures, so I made and avatar out of it. No real meaning for the headphones or anything.
If you want something that will be slightly more overstable than a Z-wildcat, talon, crush....then you should try the X-Predator. At first you might not get quite the same distance, but soon you'll notice it flies farther and farther

Are any of these discs color sensitive like what I've read about the Crush (you know the orange ones do one thing, the white ones another and so on)? Whatever the case I want something I can throw with maximum distance. I have discs I can throw 280' and under as straight as I want. I just want something I can really hurl out there.
stevemaerz
Nov 21 2003, 07:29 PM
Cantrell, While many of us are searching for the magic disc that will add 60 ft on to our drives,I honestly don't think the make, mold or weight of the disc matters a whole lot.
Sometimes I'll practice throwing distance with 15 discs at a time and I take note which went the furthest. I'll throw a couple T-birds,a couple Beasts, an Archangel,a Gazelle,a Wildcat, a Crush, an Eagle and whatever else I have with me at the time. Time after time I consistently get the most distance with.............................................. .................................................. ............................
stevemaerz
Nov 21 2003, 07:41 PM
.................................................. .................................................. ..whichever disc I got the best rip/height/angle combination with. I can always pick the top 3 out of the fifteen discs I threw before I walked down to retrieve them.Sometimes it's a T-bird,other times it's a wildcat, could be Innova , could be Discraft,Millenium and possibly even Gateway or Lightning.Any talk about one disc being far superior in distance is hype. If you're throwing 280 ft straight you're probably the envy of 90% of the Pro field. In order to make that 280 become 380 pick a driver you are consistent with and work on technique, practice regularly and forget all the hype. :)

Nov 21 2003, 09:15 PM
Steve,
I'm not looking for the magic disc, I just want to know what the best Discraft driver is for me and since I've never thrown any Discraft I was soliciting advice from people who do throw Discraft.

Nov 21 2003, 10:44 PM
Sorry Cantrell I must have misinterpreted your post.
I would recommend the Z wildcat among the Discraft line. While I have a Crush I don't get as much D as I do with the Wildcat. I can throw it a lot straighter while the Crush(pearl white) helixes back left to quickly for my tastes and arm speed.(I throw around 360-370 on ave.)
cantrell
Nov 22 2003, 06:58 PM
No problem. It does sound like I'm asking for a straight, long disc when what I want is the straightest and longest disc for me (I described earlier how I turn Valkyries over too easily now). The problem with Discraft is that, unlike Innova, they don't publish their disc's speed or distance ratings, only stability. So it would be a crap shoot for me to guess on the speed. A friend has a Z Wildcat and I threw it today for the first time. It's okay. I turned it over a little with no head wind but it's not quite as understable as the Valk. The weird thing is that I started throwing Vikings and instead of turning over they go straight and flat for half the way then turn right while still staying flat. Never seen a disc do that. So now I have to hyzer my Viks everytime. To wrap up, I'm in between discs with Innova. I turn Valks, Beasts and Viks over a little but don't have the arm to throw a Firebird (a very overstable disc) flat. The search contiues. I will buy a Z Wildcat so I can throw it more. Thanks for the help.

Nov 23 2003, 10:18 AM
I believe the problem is with your technique not the disc. This is not to say you have bad technique just that your throw is turning the disc over. The heavier and more stable/overstable the disc the les techniqe is involved. To achieve the best technique practice with light stable/understable discs and make them perform all your required shots. when you return to the heavier stuf you will most likely flip them over less.
The less stable the disc the more distance. Unless you are a Giant like Marty Peters.

Nov 23 2003, 03:48 PM
Cantrell, what is your "measured" max distance?
I'm not as familiar with Discraft's line as Innova's, but have you tried a KC Tee Bird or an X-Pred? As stated by other board posters, and verified by my own testing, they are 'similar', in that they're excellent gliders, can handle a moderate headwind, and are quite fast...though not as fast as a Valk/Beast/Wildcat/Crush. A disc known for its glide will enhance 'most' people's distance...except for the true big guns who can really milk-out distance from a fast disc. Starting with a hyzer release and 'then' turning a disc over is a verifiable display of power...or an understable disc.
In my Wildcat experiences, the Red and Dark-Blue Z-Cats are the most overstable of the Kitty-litter... /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
Only a dx Tee Bird and a dx Valk have exceeded 800' in competition... And I'm (almost ) sure that Jarvis/Sandstrom could have posted similar distances with Discraft's finest. :D

Nov 23 2003, 03:57 PM
My technique is probably average for an advanced am. I throw accidental hyzers/anhyzers from time to time. So, yes, technique is a big part of it. I have, over time, gone to heavier discs because as my strength has increased understable discs have begun to turn over harder and harder when thrown flat. So, I have thrown the full range of weights for several long distance drivers. I could simply hyzer the hell out of an understable disc to get it flat but I would rather find a more stable disc that, when released flat tends to remain flat during the high speed portion of the flight. I can release a Viking flat and it will stay flat for the first say 250-300' and then fade off right (I am rhbh). This is strange to me as, for example, a Valk, an understable disc, breaks right almost immediately when thrown very hard and flat. Just the nature of an understable disc. So, the flight of a disc is a combination of many factors. After throwing many discs of varying weights in different wind conditions I feel that I would benefit from a more stable disc than the ones I have, at least for some shots. I can throw a Tee-bird very flat but I cannot thow them quite as far as say a Valkyrie of Beast.

Circle 2,
I have thrown 400' on a measure out driving range but my normal drives are in the 340-360' range. I had a candy Tee-bird and I could throw it very flat, but not with the D of the faster discs, and I lost it recently anyway. This is why I was wondering if Discraft made a disc that might be considered as fast as a Valkyrie but more stable, kind of like a Viking (although I don't think the Vikings are as stable as the Tee-birds).

"Heavy discs can mask poor technique." >>> Your local pros have much wisdom...and some time spent with one/some will only help. Understable plastic will usually handle greater altitude for distance's sake, but other factors will/can interfere...such as wind and reduced accuracy.
My best advice is to throw as low and flat as your skills 'and' the particular golf shot will allow.
Big annies/anhyzers (RHBH) bring the potential mistakes of going too far right, stalling out short, turning into an OB roller, etc...all for the sake of 'some' added distance.
Distance = a 'fun' obsession.
I'm looking forward to the day when putting practice becomes a 'fun' obsession...for me. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Z-Cat...experiment with colors though. When you find what works best for you, buy as many as you can in that color...staying as close as possible in weight as well.
I posted this awhile back, but my doubles partner at league one night had a brand new Orange Z-cat that was way less overstable than my 2 month old dark blue one. We verified this by exchanging drivers for a what-if shot on the last hole. We were both surprised at the definite difference! :o
Many people look at color differences and flight differences as a PROBLEM!! I do not :D For me, it's the pilot and not the disc! If I can find a more understable Z-cat then great, that's less time I need to beat it up. Whereas a more overstable version of the same disc is also good b/c I've got a long flyer that won't flip until beat...
Last year I picked up a dark blue Z-cat from Mike Barr of Green Country Doubles in Tulsa, OK. First time throw I realized it was understable (maybe because of the hot stamp?). It instantly became my backup understable long flyer and I didn't have to beat it up. I was psyched until I lost it at the USDGC on #5. Last I saw of it, it was floating upside down in the middle of the lake heading towards #17. It will NEVER be seen again

2 174/175 Aviar (one beat up and one new)
1 174 CE Spider (tricky shots out of woods and long putter)
1 172 Pro Line Gremblin for windy
1 174 CE Leopard (old beat up for straight)
1 174 CE Leopard (little new for long anhyzer shots)
1 162 CE Firebird (2nd run for long downwind shots)
1 174 Pro Line Monster (Long Tomhawk shots and windy shots)
1 172 Champion Viking (start to like it and great for windy)
1 170 CE Valkyrie (long low S shots )
1 173 First Run JK Valkyrie (not clear one. for windy shots)
Now I am testing ROCS. I am trying to understand about ROCS. Anyone can tell me about rocs? what is so special about rocs? what kind and weight of rocs that I should get? Will they make Champion Roc in near future? it would be nice!
172 Z Putt'r (blue) -- short/anhyzer putts
168 Proto Wizard (blue) -- long/hyzer putts
172 Demon (blue) -- headwind approaches, and when it absolutely, positively has to go hard left
168 Z Wasp (yellow) -- long hyzer approaches and control drives
172 Z Buzzz (purple) -- straight/anhyzer approaches and control drives
158 SE Valkyrie (white) -- long anhyzer drives, long tailwind drives when I still need some control
170 Z Wildcat (orange) -- light headwinds
175 Z Reaper (red) -- heavy headwinds/heavy hyzer drives

The Crush.
cantrell
Nov 24 2003, 11:07 AM
I'm afraid to buy a Crush because of all of the stability talk. One color does one thing while another does something else. Not only that but there is no clear concensus on what each color does (obviously arm strength and technique are behind this). There is also division on which is a better straight line, long distance disc, the Talon or the Wildcat. What I don't want is a disc that is going to be flippy (at least not for my straight line driver). A little overstable or just a hair understable would be okay. I'm not a big gun but I can turn even a heavy Valkyrie over half the time (again this is when I watch the throw carefully and the disc starts out flat).
circle_2
Nov 24 2003, 12:06 PM
The Talon is a great flyer, but it has a shallow rim...which is opposite that of a Pred, which is deeper, and more comfortable/user-friendly for me.
I've had 4 of those dark blue Z-Cats...none of which had a hotstamp...all have been consistent for me. They've handled a moderate headwind when newer.
I'm a flat thrower as well, and have similar avg & max distances as you, cantrell.
I finally got a couple of good rips off of my Viking the other day...though this time of year I tend to play less, which helps my distance.

Nov 24 2003, 12:15 PM
I don't think of a Talon as a straight flyer. Mine is kinda overstable. I use it for long hyzers, and light headwind drives.
circle_2
Nov 24 2003, 12:19 PM
I agree that the Talon is 'kinda overstable'. But seeing a bigger arm fire one on a rope is so impressive...until I grip one, and feel the uninspiring shallow rim.
It's the pilot, not the disc. Color is irrelevant.
Throw the disc, insert into quiver depending on stability. Not evey disc is exactly the same, but that doesn't matter b/c as long as you know what it's going to do....then make it work for YOU!
My bag will probably stay like this for a long time. I have no desire to even buy more discs right now. Gotta learn how to throw the crap I have in there now.
2 UV Challengers(169 and 172)
1 Elite X Challenger(175)
2 10x Rocs(174 and 175)
1 ZWasp(172)
1 Purple Buzz(172)
1 Pro Gremlin
1 ZCrush(175)
1 Fly-Dye ZXS(stability rating of 1)(174)
1 Orange ZXS(stability rating of 1.5)(163)
2 Vikings(162 and 175)
1 KC Banshee(probably has been in my bag the longest)
1 JK Valkarie(flat top)
If I take anything out of my bag it will be the 2 10x Rocs and put in a heavier buzz.
The UV challengers have less fade than the XChallenger.

and cash to spare... :mad::p
I like to spend ridiculous money on discs... has anyone compiled a list of first run, second run, etc. and how to identify them? I know I have a few valuable discs that are ce plastic (tee-birds, firebirds, valkyrie), but not sure of their worth. Not that it really matters, as long as they throw good. :)

The difference I've noticed between the Talon and the Wildcat is that the Talon is more overstable and doesn't like to be thrown with as much height. It is one of the flattest discs I've seen (even without having to run over it with the car a few times) and for me it is my goto choice on windy days. I carry both a 170g and a 174g...the more windy the heavier I will throw) I don't get as much distance as I do on a Wildcat, but the difference is maybe 20 feet. If D is your biggest concern try the X Wildcat. It's a little less stable than the Z, but not so stable that I flip it. I've put it out 400+ quite a few times when I get a really good rip. I find it to be about 20 ft longer than my Z cat because it glides better. My average drives are in the 360-375 range.

Just curious if Gateway has any plans to make minis? I love mini golf, play it regularly in my apartment, and would be happy to be a Gateway mini tester. A mini Speed Demon would be possibly the best mini ever. And I think I should get a case of free ones when you make them for that idea. :D

Ok, First off....
MINI SPEED DEMON! That is awesome, I would buy a case of them! I have a Mini Magnet and all my friends just got their mini candy aviars and were bragging about how well they fly, I threw my mini magnet and got like 10 more feet then they were getting with their candies. But a SPEED DEMON! That would take the cake.
on another note...
Dan, You just bought a Candy Archangel. Just a warning, they have no flight characteristics of the DX Archangel. They fly more like a Teebird than anything. But they are fun none-the-less.
mini speed demon, sheesh :D

In defense of the DX Archangel, it is one of only 2 Innova drivers that I carry with me. When new, the Archangel (dx) has a beautiful and slow anhyzer fade. Probably the most graceful anhyzer disc I've thrown. Very few people like them, but very few people throw them for the shot that they seem to fly best, high & soft anhyzers.
Once they start to get too weathered for arial flight, they are wonderful mid-long range rollers, they go very striaight and can be tuned to keep their trueness.
The, CE Archangels, I do not like, they are nothing like the DX, totally different discs.

Whew, you guys must still be young, or have good backs... ;)
I'm trying desperatly to get the number of discs in my bag down. Even bought me an Innova Small bag so I wouldn't be tempted to carry too much extra weight.
Currently:
1 Discraft X-Putt'r 173 - putter (0-15m)
1 Discraft Rattler 174 - approach (15-50m)
1 Discraft Z-Buzz 173 - stable midrange (40-80m)
1 Innova Proto-KC Roc 178 - overstable midrange (50-90m)
1 Discraft Storm 176 - stable long midrange (70-100m)
1 Innova Champion Valkyrie 166 - understable driver (80-120m)
1 Innova 9x KC Teebird 171 - stable driver (90-130m)
1 Innova 11x Champion Teebird 171 - overstable driver (80-110m)
Occasionally i also slip in a really beat up XL when encountering a roller friendly course. Feels like this mix gives me all I need to handle just about anything I might encounter. (Even scared off an aligator with a Roc during 1994 Worlds in Port Arthur, Texas ;) )
There's also a slight overlap between the discs individual range/stability/usage, so even if I would lose one or even two discs during a round I can cope well with what's left.

Erik,
Is that Talon pretty beat up for rolling or do you throw a forearm roller?
PT
Lets see whats in my revolution te bag..... [list]
Starfire JLS 2 barry beasts dx teebird (tomahawks) CE firebird CE teebird Z-X2 CE valk 2 dx rocs CE spider Z-wasp X-buzzz Champ Roc 04 3x aviar x glow aviar
PT:
It's semi beat. I throw a "snap" roller. Which is to say, I get it down and rolling pretty close to me without a lot of hangtime between release and contact. I like the stability of the talon, because it doesn't want to roll onto its top as quickly as a beat disc. The X-plastic is super fast, too. Faster than the Z IMHO. For forehand rollers I use the Z-Xtreme. It NEVER flips onto its top, and holds a straight line for a surprisingly long time. It's worth a try, and I hear that they're making another run of Z-Xtremes. Oh, joy! :D

I usually play a round and decide if a disc should stay. If I don't think about using it in a round or 2, it's out of my memory, and will only cause me trouble (I haven't thrown this one in a while... I hope it works [negative thoughts] and usually it doesn't perform to expectations so I should throw a trusted disc.)
that's why I started paring the bag down. it's lowered my scores.
That and I got tired of the big quad shocks setup. I like a little shoulder slinger these days.

I think your whole bag is gonna give in soon! At least the Revolution is on its way.
Anyways, here's mine (I'm shrinking the number of molds I throw but have not quite reached as few as I want):
3 Champion Orcs - 174 (fading hyzers or steep depending on release-also better for wind), 168 (straight and long, also flexes or slow gradual hyzers) and 160 (tailwind, big anhyzers with left finish)
3 Teebirds (looking for more!): 175 CE TL (hyzers, straight shots not as long as Orc shots), 167 11X (same as 168 Orc but shorter, a little more understable as well), 168 CE TL (hyzer release to flatten out and finish left, nice and straight shots, anhyzers too)
169 Champ Barry Schulz Beast - I used to use this for big field shots, but I never use it anymore, so I'm looking to trade it if anyone wants
170 Quantum JLS 1.2 - this is my main anhyzer (rhbh) disc, used on almost any hole requiring a right bend
169 SE Valk - roller, it's the only adequate one I have right now and can be used for almost any roller shot. I'm thinking about factoring my 11X slightly to roll though, is that legal?
2 175 10X Gazelles - one beat for anhyzers or hyzer releases that have to flatten out, one new for straight and low cieling shots with predictable left fade. Also can be used for hyzers.
166 Champ 11X Cheetah - tomahawks and tomahawks only, it lets me vary the release angle for the desired overhand line
4 Rocs - 2 179 DX - one beat for anhyzers, one new for straight low shots with little fade, 1 180 KC for s-curves, 180 '04 Champ for dead straight or hyzer shots
2 Spiders - 175 Champion Dyed - low ceiling anything, 175 Pro Line - used this for a round or two while I had thought I lost the Champ. Don't use that anymore and am willing to trade both if anyone wants.
2 Aviars - 175 3X JK for straight to hyzer approaches that are in between the distances for Rhynos and Rocs; also use this disc for long go-fors (60, 70, 80 feet), 175 Champion Dyed - medium range anhyzer approaches, also thrown off the tee with hyzer angle to flex out on shorter holes
3 Rhynos - 172 Pro Soft for putting or some approaching, 172 Champion for most short approaches, especially straight, left or s-curve, 175 DX - mostly used for practice putting for repitition, good for short anhyzers with less fade than Champion
Holy moly thats alot of discs. Ya know, you could buy a decent set of BALL golf clubs for the price of all those discs!
I just took out my lone ROC and traded it straight across for a Swirl APX. The APX is the most amazing putter I've ever thrown. It pushed the Wizard out of my bag for sure! And I thought the Wizard was the end all be all putter! I'm suprised I don't see more people using the swirt APX!!
shhhh don't tell anyone about the swirl APX...it would be way too much competition.

i'm trying to downsize, but this is my current bag, other than water discs that i might add for certain courses:
3 champion orcs (174, 168, 160)
2 11x teebirds (174, 169)
1 champion beast (174)
2 champion valkyries (174, 166)
1 champion leopard (170)
1 pro-line monster (175)
1 champion firebird (175)
1 pro-line gremlin (175)
2 z-buzzz (177, 174)
1 photon glo wasp (171)
1 cryZtal challenger (172)
1 Z puttr (172)
1 se soft rhyno
Well, after taking a lot of advice from these boards...I've got my "bag" down to this:
173g Z-Buzzz - My ace disc...it has the taste of metal in it now...I've hit the pole 4 times since my ace...
172g Breeze - When you know exactly where a disc is going to land before you throw it...nice feeling. Love watching that slow right turn...
138g Blaze - More just messing around with this disc now...I absolutely love it for overhands, and hard left turn shots.
Whatever my putter of the week is...usually a 120g Wizard, or 174g Pro Challenger...every once in a while, I bring my Aerobie Arrow (I'm the only person apparently who likes the disc...will accept donations of your unloved ones :D ).
And in the rare instance I use a driver (actually haven't thrown one yet this year in a round...not because I have great distance, just working on mid-ranges) I use my beloved 173g X.S.

So far this year I have been sticking to a minimalist philosophy of carrying a few molds that serve a multitude of functions across different conditions. So far these few discs have been all I've needed in sun, rain, wind, and snow.
2-173g medium-stiffness wizards (this is a super-stable putter that doubles as a short midrange from about 250' and in. I have two basically for practicing my missed shots)
1-173g (although marked 174g) champion panther (fast, understable, medium to long midrange. I use it for medium range anhyzers as well as shorter, trick shots out of the rough as it will hold a TIGHT anhyzer to the ground)
1-176g X-Wasp (Fast, overstable at low speeds, stable at high speeds, long-range midrange. This is my go to midrange out in the open for straight and hyzer lines)
1-176g (although marked 175) Z-Buzz (Very fast, stable, long-range midrange. I'm not sure this disc is different enough from the X-Wasp to justify itself, but I like to keep the wasp overstable so this is my go to midrange in the trees. At the same weight it does not hurt my consistency with the wasp too much. It does not fly quite as far as the wasp, but is better for shots in the 250'-285' range that I want to finish straight. It is also better for anhyzer shots and I defininely prefer it as a forehand midrange. Basically it is like a broken in X-Wasp.)
3-173g (although marked 172g) Orcs (Moderately overstable distance driver. I use this disc off the tee as often as possible for relatively open shots that play 330' and beyond, or shorter hyzer all-the-way shots. I also like it for big, over-the-top hyzers that I'm not powerful enough to use a more overstable disc for. For me, 173g is a great all around weight. I have three basically for practice, although one is markedly more overstable than the others and is better in situations where extra overstability is useful.
1-173g (marked 172) Viking. (Stable, control/distance driver. I use this disc for fairways that are too tight for my Orc because I can really control the amount of high speed turn I get varying from very a very gradual with almost no fade to a full distance anhyzer)
1-173g (marked 171) CFR Glow Banshee (Fast and overstable distance driver. This is a great all around overstable driver for backhand, fore hand, and especially thumbers. It is a great disc for a windy day as it has great resistance to high speed turn while not finishing nearly as left as other overstable drivers. I use this one primarily for backhand and sky thumbers over trees.)
1-174g (marked 170g!) Champion Banshee (This disc is quite a bit more overstable than my cfr banshee and is my main thumber disc as well as my go to disc on days where the wind is just absurd. It is also a good forehand roller)

well I usually have 5 or 6 putters, for practice, but when I am actually out there they are in the car...
Putter/Approach: Omega ss(175) and KC Aviar(175)
Mid: Z-wasp(178) and Champ Panther(175)
Long: Orc(175), Viking(175), Monster (172)
Tricks: a light Champ Firebird (167) and a light Champ Beast (161)
thats it... well I usually chuck in a backup Orc and Aviar... those are my money discs... :D
I agree, I love the Wizard. It has taken a few strokes off my game and you'll never hear someone complain about that. I have four I practice putting with at home, but only bring one out to the course.
Is it true the Wizard is the same thing as an Aviar?

Is it true the Wizard is the same thing as an Aviar?
It is VERY similar but no it isn't the exact same. The bead is very slightly different but the biggest difference is that the flight plate is thinner. That is what I love about the Wizard.
mikeP
Apr 22 2004, 04:13 PM
I agree about the flight plate, you can really feel your fingers through it. I think this helps with a consistent, smooth release. Its probably just personal preference though /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Apr 22 2004, 04:26 PM
It does make it go further.
I think it has more mass towards the rim which makes it fly straighted as well as hit the chains solidly to prevent bounce outs. One thing I noticed when I was putting with my Swirl APX is that I would get way more bounce outs with it than with my hard wizard!! I think its because when the APX hits the chains, it doesn't have enough force to always bend the chains enough to catch it. The Wizard has so much mass on the rim that it crashes the chains and always sticks. I've putted with a Wizard for about a year and I've only had ONE bounce out with it!!

I'm thinking the QJLS will soon be replaced by DX Valkyries for turnover shots. It's gone surprisingly overstable recently. Other than that, the signature tells my bag's story. I just ordered a crimson red Revolution Team bag as well, so that is "what my bag is" in two or three days.
All of these are looking for a new bag to rest in:
174-Champion Rhyno
171-KC Pro Roc
149-Champion Valkyrie
175-Champion Orc
169-Champion Orc
175-Champion Monster
167-Champion Teebird
168-Champion Viking
176-Z Buzz
173-Z XL
168-Z Crush
173-#1 Helix

Got to go revolution on the bag. I'll recommend the Team bag, mines a texas edition, well once it gets here. FYI it takes about a week and a half to special order the bag if he doesn't have it in stock, but it should be well worth the wait. I've nvr heard a complaint, and im sure my rust te team bag will also be flawless.

My Revolution bag is on order but as soon as it comes the following will be resting nicely in it:
174 Champion Orc: when theres wind or I want a very gradual hyzer
169 Champion Orc: the workhorse driver
166 Champion Orc: maximum D
175 CFR TL: driver when theres wind and i need it to stay straight, main forehand driver
168 CFR TL: the workhorse driver
164 CFR TL: Straight distance with a tailwind, very long turnover shots
170 Champion Firebird: Forehand hyzers, Tomahawks, mostly a specialty disc.
165 Champion Firebird: hyzer shots, S-curves, when I need a disc to come left but still give me awsome D
170 Dx Eagle: Rollers until I pick up a pro teebird and beat it
178 Z-Wasp:forehand midrange, backhand hyzers
178 Z-buzzz: backhand midrange, pefectly straight, or turnovers
175 KC Aviar: Drives or Approaches under 250'
175 Champion Rhyno: Forehand Approaches or backhand in the wind.
175 JK-X :main putter
175 Soft Rhyno: wind putter
150 JK-X: when there's no wind, low ceiling putts.
In Gateway player bag
2 175 firm wizards- 1 new for straight or hyzer up to 320, 1
beat for turnovers and short rollers. Possibly the best disc
on the market
2 175 demons- 1 new for hard hyzers up to 340, 1 semi beat
for gradual hyzers up to 360
3 175 dx teebirds- 1 new for long control straight to left, 1
semi beat for dead straight drives with no fade, 1 beat to
hell for reverse s curves or rollers
1 173 Orc- never thought I could throw 500' on a straight line.
Now I can. Will definitely get some more of these
2 172 E-S blend spirits- not quite as overstable as the speed
demon, but longer with a more predictable skip, will still
hyzer hard in any wind
1 175 proto wizard- all putts
All discs are thrown forehand and backhand.
Also, am anxiously awaiting new straight midrange from Gateway to replace the rocs and buzzes that I have taken out of my bag. They just never felt right in my hand.

2 T-birds

^That's a pretty hefty load to carry around!
I think I've got my bag to exactly what I want and need. I've got something for every shot but carry very few molds and only 15 discs. It's an awesome set up and my Team bag is light now. Just click the link in my signature to see what I carry.
P.S. Is that little page I threw together cool?
