Update to Old post! Tomahawk Talon has been replaced by the FLASH! Tommies and thumbers 350_ in Winnnnd! Fun fun. Also, long live the Crystal Buzz and Challenger, though not in the trusted section of the bag yet. The crush has earned a permanent spot at all around distance driver, downwind and into slight upwind. Z predator for wind- and low ceiling shots. Mrx for stable approaches.

Bag Update:

1x172 Flash - Max D Downhill
1x 173 Orc - Long Hyzer
1x White 'Turkey Hollow...I eat disc golfers for lunch' Crush -Wind
1x Green First Run Crush -Wind
1x 174 Champ Firebird -Long Hyzer, Hurricane Wind
1x 174 Champ Monster -Long Hyzer, Hurrican Wind
1x 150 Dragon - 'I really don't feel like losing a disc right now and there is no wind'

I had 30 discs in the bag and it still wasn't full but it was too heavy so I pulled my Champ Classic Roc, 2004 CE Roc, Z MRV, Aviar P&A, X- XS, Z-XS, Hard Aviar, and Champ Rhyno out.

It's still a lot of discs but it is only really only Omegas, Rocs, Valks, Vikings, Beasts, Orcs, Crush (7 Molds) + Specialty. Plus Valk-Viking-Beast-Orc are fairly similar according to Innova, just with varying stability.

jeez that's a ton of discs to carry around ... that's like a disc for every single shot that you could ever think of needing to throw. I still can't believe you have two for Max D and then yet another for Max D downhill ! Man I'd never know which one to pull out, as a matter of fact I'd probably need a cheat sheet to remind me what shot each one's for.

Personally, here's what I face when I look in my bag ... Valkyrie, Firebird or Roc? K.I.S.S. :)

22 discs isn't bad with backpack straps. I am very touchy-feely about what disc to use. I use the disc that I have the best fuzzy happy feeling / best picture of the shot at the time. I have a distinct feeling for each disc, though some may or may not be very far apart. Kinda weird, but hey, when I backpacked I would have 80+lbs on my back so this doesn't seem like a big deal.

In regards to the rabbits foot....... it just dangles off of my bag.... It works in mysterious ways in regards to match play..... no matter how many four leaf clovers, I find...... I don't think i am very lucky sometimes.... :D

New beast is fairly overstable for me. Not as good in wind for me as Crush, Orc, or Monster, but definitely doable. DX Beasts are sweet once they get a little beat in though. Heck Champ beasts are even sweeter tuned. My slightly beat BS Beast is my most consistently long disc with a slight S when thrown hyzer-flip.

Drivers:
173g Orc--my original Orc, so used stamp is gone...longest disc in the bag with no wind or tailwind for wide open distance shots.
173g Viking--turnover/uphill driver (unusually flippy for a Viking)
174g Orc--pretty new, low profile distance drives or distance drives when its too windy for my old Orc.
175g Viking--workhorse distance driver, it is the most speed tolerant of my distance drivers, very stable and accurate on hyzer, straight, and anhyzer drives both back and forehand.
175g E/H blend Spirit--headwind driver, also great for long, hard left turns and distance forehand shots.
174g Champ Banshee--monster thumbers, gale-force headwinds, forehand rollers.
180g CFR Viper--utility disc for approaches and mid range shots in extreme wind, spike hyzers, anhyzer "S" shots back and forehand.
Midrange Drivers:
173g Breeze--finesse approach/short midrange disc for tight turnover/straight tunnel shots, and tight "S" shots around trees.
179g Champ Aurora MS--finesse midrange driver
177g ZBuzzz--workhorse midrange/fairway driver (75% of shots between 275-350')
177g Q-Sentinel--overstable midrange
Putters:
173g Medium Wizard--putter drives and long approaches
173g Soft Wizard--short approaches, putts

well, if the shot is open, just throw your Firebird for a midrange.

The most overstable midrange that I have is a white x Wasp. It is just a little more stable than a brand new 11x KC Roc.

A few differences really. I've noticed the cryztal's have a few differences then the z's and x plastic. First off, Cryztal plastic is extremely tacky and for being considering high quality plastic, it's also very malleable. It's a great headwind putter, and a great short range driver and hyzer disc. The Elite X is alot less stable (both are the same age too) and the x plastic is hard and brittle. Makes for a great finesse disc on short holes and really holds a straight line with some good snap. The Elite X is more of a strictly upshot disc. I feel the Cryztal is just grippier and holds in the basket better than the X plastic Challenger.

2 teebirds - one worn CE for straight shots, one champion for S curves
1 firebird - 170g for throwing into headwinds and for hyzer shots

2 z buzzz - my utility midranges. straight shots.
1 z wasp - because using a roc is cheating. the disc always goes in.

2 DX Aviar - when there is hope of putting it in the basket
1 magnet - for when i miss the first two putts.

Sometimes in the bag:

1 Champion Orc for distance
1 11x Kc Pro Roc for when i need to relieve myself of the z wasp handicap.

Why limit yourself? I've literally thrown about every disc made, and they are all different. There are Innova and Discraft discs that do things and get lines that no Gateway disc can, just as there are Gateway discs that do things that other discs can't touch.

I like my Spirit more and more, but it seems that the Illusion is the same thing, just a little less stable (like a broken in Spirit). Why not make a different disc altogether? I've not yet thrown the Illusion, so correct me if I'm wrong. My point is that Gateway does not offer a great diversity of discs. I can thumb my Champ Banshee 350'. I've tried thumbing the Blaze, Speed Demon, and Spirit and they don't work nearly as well for this shot. I could go through my whole bag and offer dozens of additional examples, but you get the point. However good a disc golfer you are with Gateway, you would be even better if you opened up to the great diversity of discs that the market offers.

I have a friend that has been playing with almost all Gateway for the last year.It in my opinion has degraded his level of play because he uses nothing but a X-putter and the rest is Gateway. He doesnt use a Wizard {in my opinion, thier best disc} and is constantly off the mark.He says you cant trust Innova because every run is different. The staple argument for anyone that throws Gateway or Discraft.I think every company produces discs worth using, and that eventually my friends level of play will return after this transition period if he expands his bag and brings back a few of the discs that led him to open. Its what works for you not your buddy. At the same time I dont like to have to beat the crap out of my plastic to make it fly the way I think it should and very few Gateway throwers dont tune thier discs like that.Putting a disc in a dryer for 6 hours isnt something I would do to make a seriously overstable driver fly strait.I would just buy a strait driver.I have met a few people that can reach super D with Gateway strait from the box.{Spirits and Speed Demons, that is]The rest are tuning or throwing somethin else.

Jul 14 2004, 02:46 PM
The fact is that Gateway's runs are more consistent because they do one run at a time. If you buy two Gateway discs at the same time you can bet that they were the exact same run. Just because Gateway is small enough not to have to deal with mass production and the complications therein does not make them superior. Gateway probably produces 1/20 of the discs that Innova runs. When they start selling more discs they too will have to deal with the fact that there are no fool proof and cost efficient means to eliminate all the variables that lead to run inconsistency.

DiscinDeadHead, I would just like to say that I really like your choice to throw only Gateway plastic, and am glad you are doing well. I believe that in this sport, especially this sport, most people really do respect each other for who they are, what they stand for, and what equipment they choose to wear and throw.

Still wantin to try that "E" Spirit!!! It will be the next disc I buy, but who knows when that will be. Throw what you want and explain it if you want too, but remember, you sure don't have too.

1 Wham-O Touchline Under 177g
1 11x KC Gazelle 175g

1 11x TeeBird 173g
1 10x TeeBird 167g
3 1st run CE Rhynos all 171g (one beat, two new)

As you can see, I gots a weenie arm, almost everything I stock is understable. Although I own Monsters and Firechickens, I just don't need 'em. The 11x TeeBird is as stable a disc as I need. I also don't carry any of my old CE discs as they are just too **** expensive to replace if lost or stolen, but they still get out sometimes for tournaments :D

I only have a few beat discs in my bag, and all of them were natural, happening on the course, not my dryer!
I personally have been able to keep a straight line with a hyzer at the end using brand new Spirits. And my Illusions hyzer to flat brand new as well.
Heres the thing. I've been successful with my Gateway discs, b/c I've limited my mold count, and learned them with incredible detail. Doing that with any disc will yield success.

Even now, their are certain differences in runs. You're right, theres no way around it. BUT, Gateways plastic itself is pretty consistant, reducing the amount of variance. The only difference I've noticed in runs, is some runs of Blazes and Sabres are cooled on a fixture, creating a flatter top, and making them more overstable. These are marked as "FX" for fixture on the bottom of the disc. Also, some older Blazes and Sabres had a small amount of flame retardant in them, also making them more overstable. These were stamped as 844 Blaze and 844 Sabres. I really like the idea of distinguishing runs with labels like these, or the way Millenium used to do it. So yes, there are differences in runs, its just not as hard to tell what you've got.

Soon to be testing G7i Elements. :D

Amen. The Element will be one sweet [*****] disc. A lot of Roc throwers would be wise to give this disc a try when its out!

The Element will be similar to the ROC with a slightly smaller bead and a slightly sharper nose radius. The disc will weigh up to 180 legally and a similar diameter to the ROC.

Its been awhile thats for sure...DDH,either you have great snap or you are throwing lighter discs than I because my spirit goes about 200ft and dumps immediatly. It doesnt matter either way none of those discs will ever better the ones I have.Ill sell you every gateway disc I have for 30$ plus shipping.Thats 6....3 wizards,1 chief,1 g6i and a spirit.Thats all I have left and I dont want them. They are all in excellent condition except one of the soft Wizs has a little use.As far as the new middie Ill stick with the original.

I putt with a 3x JK Aviar that might challenge for that title. I can EASILY fold it in half twice. ;)

bcoxxx
Jul 21 2004, 03:50 PM
you got a challenge...i can fold the rhyno up enough to put it in my pocket. :) i found it embedded in a gravel/sand bar in a fairly deep creek, when the creek was low, so there's no telling how long it was underwater. i'm assuming the submersion softened it permanently...i dont doubt there are softer ones out there, but it's really, really soft! :)

Andrew, I'm not sure what "carry alof is" means, maybe less disc golf and more school is what you need.

Regardless, you're young and you live in Texas which traditionally has been Innova country, so I'm gonna cut you some slack and do you a favor.

Here's the favor. Don't be like me and other newer players who just threw what they saw others throwing and repeating their jokes (Discrap). I made that mistake for my first few years and now realize how stupid it was. If there's something out there that could help your game, try it without bias. You'll be glad you did.

the flash has just earned a semi-permanent spot in my bag...i've been playing for almost 1.5 years, and i threw 3 different drives with a blue flash over 400ft yesterday....one of them PARKED a 440ft hole...a lean over and drop in. i love my orc but i cant get the huge S-curve shots out of it like i can the flash...the 440ft shot was with a 15-20mph tailwind, though.

This Andrew Van I_take_it_up_the_Rear guy really is an idiot. One reason, he lives in Texas. Second reason, he must be home schooled. I bet that a few of the Discraft loyalists would gladly whip his teenage ***** with their Discrap. :DLOL. What an idiot!!!!

Jul 26 2004, 06:21 PM

Wow. What an honor. I'd love to be from a place that really [*****] cartoon put on the map.

Jul 26 2004, 07:29 PM
Reverend,

No problem. We were all teenagers at one time. Thank God those years are over. I never liked being a big mouthed, know it all that actually knew nothing. As for the Texas remark, I take that back. We Colorado folk love your money. Keep on coming to the Rockies for your Rocky Mountain highs :D

Krevo,

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but South Park was on the map long before that silly cartoon. Thanks for the reminder, i think i'm going to try to find a cartoon character for the little image thing in the profile.

169 Z Wildcat (Clear Dyed)
174 DX ROC (Orange)
175 S Wizard (White Hard)

The Wildcat and Predator are used for anything over 325' and when I'm feeling lazy. Wildcat is also used for pancakes and overhand shots. VERY NICE DISCS!!
The ROC is for anything within 300'. Any angle.
The Wizard is for approaching and putting. Sometimes for 300' rollers.

Its so simple guys! Take four discs! No bags nescisary!! I play my best golf when I have just a few discs in my bag. It eliminates the choices! Try it and watch your consistancy go through the roof!

This list will be cut in half very shortly!!
Ce TB 175
11x TB 175
Champion Viking (1st run with zippers) 175-more overstable viking..
Champion Viking 175-Boooom drives!! ;)500'+.. This flies like an overstable Valk for me
Champion Viking- 175 backup for above listed disc ;)
X out Valk-175 more understable Viking
Ce Firebird FX-175 Thumber disc
Champion Monster-174 new piggy
Ce Firebird-174 piggy disc
Ce Firebird FX-172 old disc turns over a little for me but can trust it to come back!!
Stratus DX-176 roller\turnover
Stratus Elite-176 experimental to see if it holds up better than dx with same qualities.
Roc-179 Safe shot..I have tried to stop using this disc as much as I used to because I was throwing it all the time. I can throw it about as far as most of my drivers pending wind/hole layout. I mostly use it now for shorter straight shots.
Z Wasp-179 shorter hyzer holes.
Ce Areo-179 experimental again. very straight midrange..
2 Z Magnets-175 PUTTERS/Approach
Omega something got at world dubs.. Not the super soft but just a little harder..--- Approach, some drives.. I hit a 330ft ace with its twin :D

Nope. Theres a pro master at my home course that throws all DX plastic because its grippier. He hates the way candy plastic feels in his hand and the extra $$.

Am I the only guy left on the planet not throwing all champion/candy/tye-dye plastic?

I try to avoid candy plastics, however I need a Z disc for overhand and pancake because DX type discs just don't hold up to hitting the ground that hard! I throw ONLY DX ROCs and S Wizards. When I need a driver, its usually X (unless its a DX Teebird).

Aug 30 2004, 11:19 PM
(All Heavies)
Drivers- 4 Hybrid KCTeeBirds/2 Champion Edition TeeBirds
1 Champion Eagle (for thumbers)
MidRange- All Rocs (a couple Ching, a couple Supers, and an '01 CE and an '04 CE)
Putters- Big Bead Aviars- 2 First Run Pros, 2 proto J"Kaviars", and an 11 time

nice....

I used to carry a 175 H speed demon, it was great for tomahawks, especially if it landed on the stamp, it would always give a good bounce (and it was so stiff you could hear it, "BOING!!" ), but alas, it was lost to the trees.

I just wanted to talk about one disc in my bag.
A C.E. Viper, I love this disc!!
It's considered a driver, but has the diameter of a mid-range, very over-stable!
Gets me out of a lot wind-shots that kill's approaches, as well as mid-range-hizers that are too short for a firebird or monster.
I have not come across anyone else who throws vipers :D

I used to throw Vipers as my main driver years ago. Used it before throwing a Whippet. I had a really overstable version folks called a Metal Head , star stamped. Very Wicked !!!!

A phrase by Napoleon Hill :
There is one quality that one must possess to win, and that is definiteness of purpose, the knowledge of what one wants and a burning desire to possess it. :D

Settled down a lot in my bag lately:

2 Omega SS ( Putting and Drives <200)
4 Flat top DX Rocs (New to Beat- Approach and Drives 200-280)
1 Aurora MS (Similar to a beat roc for turnovers)
2 DX Valks (Turnovers & Rollers)
3 DX Beasts (New to Beat- My Go to discs for control/straight 280-350)
2 Champ Orcs (175 & 168) (Max D depending on the wind 350+)
1 Proline Orc (163- Crazy D but unpredictable for really long/open)
1 Green First Run Crush (Headwind)
1 Tsunami (Hyzers)
1 Monster (Utility/Crazy hyzers)

With the exception of the specialty discs I am pretty much down to SS/Rocs/Valks/Beasts/Orcs.

Oct 02 2004, 02:31 AM
Haven't done this in forever. Been back playing/collecting/testing long enough now that the bag has settled suffciently in its contents that this will hold for awhile:

170g Glow Aviar (crispy, for upshots)
175g white Omega Supergrip (grippy, for putts)
170g beat white Ching-stamped Classic Roc (flippy, for EVERYTHING; late turn King)
174g white Pro Classic Roc (Short, stable drives)
170g yellow CFR Classic Roc (Short, "worked" drives)
176g orange Super Roc (Stable mid-length drives)
177g tuned white 10x KC Roc (does that Roc thing)
175g orange CE Whippet X (whenever max overstability is the deal; sidearms, too)
172g pearlescent pink CE Gazelle (stepping stone, or 'tweener, driver)
172g pearlescent pink CE Panther (mid-range turnovers)
166g clear yellow CE Panther (mid-range tunnel shots & the like)
175g pearlescent yelllow CE Banshee (sidearm and useable overstability King)
172g clear orange CE T-bird (overstable standard drives)
175g solid white Pro TL(s?) (#1 straight 'n' standard; wind fighter)
170g pearlescent red CE TL (line holder)
170g orange Pro TL (slight turnover; #2)
168g clear purple CE Leopard (more turn)
161g clear blue CE Leopard (downwind w/turn)
150g clear red gummy CE Leopard (secret weapon; many uses)
148g red DX Archangel (tailwind King or whenever late, long glide is needed)
167g clear purple CE Firebird (abnormally overstable for this weight)
172g clearish red CE Viking (T-bird on 'roids)
166g pearly yellow CE Viking (TL on 'roids)
150g clear purple CE Viking (Leopard on mega 'roids; tailwind King)
175g pearlescent purple CE Orc (headwinds and hyzers; sidearms)
172g white Pro Orc (Max D w/overstability)
167g pearlescent green CE Orc (frankly, I haven't figured it out)
166g pearly peach CE Beast (Long turnovers)

Lessee, 28 discs from 15 molds. WAY too many of each, I know, but I loves me some plastic. Would throw every disc ever made if it was possible.
