What's wrong with throwing three hundred pennies PDGA's way, jeez.

we pay the fees over and over again, but get nothing out of it. Mace ran this event, not the PDGA. He had to pay a sanctioning fee to the PDGA (plus insurance), and we each had to pay $3 to the PDGA for the privilege of playing in one of their events. If you hadn't paid your yearly dues, you got to pay $13 for that privilege.

I think if the PDGA is going to charge what they do for a sanctioning fee, then add a per-player fee on top of that... they need to add some value to the tournament other than ratings and meaningless points.

Anyway... another topic for another time. Now for those who complain about payout or anything else during an event:

Mace, correct me where I'm wrong, but here's a breakdown of the PDGA's fees for the weekend:

$75 sanctioning fee
$3 per player fee
120-ish players @ $3 per = $360

the PDGA made (at least) $435 for this event. Plus they sold insurance for the event, but I don't know what the profit margin is there, if any, so I'm leaving that out. I'm not sure what we as players or Mace as a TD got for that $435, but I don't think there was more than an hour or so of work for them to do... I wish I made $435/hour. OK I'm drifting again...

The PDGA made $435. Then they require the TD to add $500 to the pro pot. There is insurance to be paid at $50/day. Park permits, port-a-potties, etc. I don't even know how much that cost, but I know it wasn't free. We're looking at over $1000 off the top just to run an event like this one. Some sponsors helped out so some of those fees were covered, but definitely not all. Add in the costs associated with maintaining a big stash of quality merchandise, all the tables, tents, PA systems, computers, printers, etc. etc. etc... This was an expensive event to put on. I haven't even scratched the surface on the number of man-hours that went into planning and preparing for the event. Even after the event, the work's not done... in spite of that $435 the PDGA already made, Mace still gets to fill out a ton of paperwork and get it turned in (with a *deadline*) to the PDGA.

People wonder how TDs get burned out...

Remember folks, all we had to do was show up, have fun, and throw some plastic. This was a quality event at some awesome courses. It even happened on the most beautiful weekend we've had in months. Mace put on a great show. I think he deserves our support and thanks for making this happen.

Channel 8 last night said there is a low pressure system moving from W to E. If it slides as little as 60 miles south of it's projected path it could bring white flakes to DFW. Red River area is expecting a little regardless.

Those are very good points Josh. Some of the details are a little off, but that has no nearing on the reality of the entire statement, it is very costly to run these events. Every year there is another "Oh by the way" that ends up costing $250 or more and then there is several more after that and so on.....

I am growing less and less sure of what we get for the $$$ that go away to the PDGA. I am confident of this though, If MM runs an event that is not sanctioned it will be run in the same manner as one that is sanctioned. For some reason there is a perception that the event is better because it is sanctioned, but in reality it would be the same event and more dough would stay here if it was unsanctioned. The main difference is you would not get your rating updated.

baldguy
Feb 12 2008, 12:13 PM
ratings can be done outside of PDGA events... someone else just has to step up and create a system for it. A system that allows PDGA and non-PDGA events to be rated... hrm... I wonder who would have the technology to do that...

Ok you two! Take all the pot shots u want to at me as I am an easy target, (They call me teflon man you know), but to hack at The Greatness especially after his weekend, is inhuman to say the least. All Dave wants for the world is good things. I feel fortunate that he only bought his "F" game this weekend. He had explained ahead of time, that it was not his intent to win as it would have been an obscene display of power. He wanted the rest of us to be at ease an put our best foots (footes or feet?) forward, but not to get laxed as he will be there to compete at the midweek event. So with that said, Mr. Mace, it was a great event, loved the weather and hope you spin a little more sunshine our way this coming weekend. My-Gluteus, tell Amy no matter how hard she tries, you are not changing from your current state:

Plus they(the PDGA) sold insurance for the event, but I don't know what the profit margin is there, if any, so I'm leaving that out.

Having family in the insurance business i can shed a little light here. The PDGA currently charges $50 for their blanket insurance. Given the number of events covered it costs them around $15-$20 per event. So your profit margin is roughly $30-$35 per event. Do the math; the PDGA is making a killing by "offering" their insurance.

I wonder how long it will be before someone comes up with a similar insurance blanket and is able to offer TD's a $30 savings right off of the bat.

I think an organization should emerge that supports the SN-type model as a separate entity but offers a government for the sport. The PDGA is the current self-proclaimed one, but they spend soooo much money, so they have to make soooo much money... they're not a "non-profit" any more, they're just a "spend-all-the-profit".

the only things a sanctioning body needs to provide are: a set of rules, a set of tech standards, and some technology to manage the whole thing. Player ratings are a cool and well-liked part of that, but can be done extremely easily. There are enough brains and experience in this thread alone to accomplish all of that without trying too hard.

Josh,

All you need is for someone to take in the SN information, and create ratings. Why re-invent the wheel? SN already has it together except the ratings part, but with the Jerry Power TD spreadsheet, ratings are a snap!!!!!!!!!

Twin Oaks is only SN this year and if you noticed, the SN Championships are qualifiers. :D

something tells me that MaceMan won't mind the hi-jack :D

I think that SN is on the right track... I just think that there should be a governing body that supports SN and any other "tour" type entities. Perhaps I just need to read more about SN.

I envision an organization that operates very cheaply and simply provides rules, standards, ratings, etc... but also allows other organizations to access and contribute to its player data. Compartmentalizing all competition aspects would make the governing body much more efficient. No headquarters would be necessary, very little budget review, a small board that only needs to meet online in a forum or over the phone via conference call... an organization for the members, by the members. One that would give players what they want from the sport, provide the organization necessary to coordinate a large number of events all over the nation, but do it all for very little money and therefore only need to generate very little money.

maybe it's a pipe dream, and maybe it does need its own forum... but I think there's something to the idea. I've heard ideas from a lot of people who have been around the sport for a long time and know what it takes to make something like this happen. I'll drop the subject here... but you people know how to get ahold of me if you want to discuss further :). I think I might have a forum somewhere that might need a new thread...

Lets do whats best for Texas Golf most courses, most players, most tournaments and the PDGA favorite most fees paid.

Go for it, but I think it is a pipe dream. SN is nothing but a tour. Southern nationals does not do jack about rules, standards, ratings, competitive structure, vision, etc. People act like they are some noble alternative to the PDGA, but is nothing but a tour. If Brian wanted to not sanction his events, his North Texas Series would be completely analogous to the SN, just at a smaller scale.

Once you start saying "We can do rules, ratings, standards, etc.," you are right back on the road to forming a PDGA-like organization, with all the attendent warts and costs.

Very good point James. It is fine to question and wonder what is really going on, but it would be very easy to end up right back where we are.

There is a need to do things that are being done by the org, but there is a need for much more than that.

This game needs an overhaul from the bottom to the top.

The business is based on the "buddy it sure would be cool if you gave me that for nothing" principal, and that will get you nowhere but broke.

The "Sport" part of this game is still a bunch of people that are unwilling to be a richard and enforce the rules, and super unrealistic expectations on the return from participation in events in relation to the input.

And the government is about as powerful as the slogan pertaining to the city of Arlington TX on a bumper sticker..."There is no government like no government". Make a stand somewhere about something please.

James, I know there are alot of warts and costs, but there aren't as many costs as the PDGA would like you to believe. I think tours like SN should be supported and allowed to do their own thing. I don't think a sanctioning body should regulate things like payout structure. They also shouldn't directly compete in any market surrounding the sport other than the actual sanctioning part. They shouldn't run events themselves, they shouldn't sell merchandise, they shouldn't produce DVDs, they shouldn't back any one particular magazine... they shouldn't be involved in the business of the sport at all. What they *should* do is support any businesses or people that want to do these things.

baldguy
Feb 12 2008, 04:59 PM
is the usga a "non-profit organization"?

ck34
Feb 12 2008, 05:02 PM
From their website: The USGA is the not-for-profit governing body of the game of golf.

baldguy
Feb 12 2008, 05:06 PM
then I believe they are operating inappropriately. I don't think a not-for-profit organization should compete with businesses that operate exclusively within the scope of the thing the non-profit strives to benefit. It's one thing for them to offer logo shirts and hats as souvenirs or collectible merchandise. That's not direct competition.... but that's not really the point. I don't think governing bodies should be so big that they need to be in business. It creates a need for revenue that breeds a lot of other problems.

That's as far as I'm going on this thread. If you want to discuss more, head over to the link I posted above. It's fast, free, and you don't have to be a dues-paying member of any organization... imagine that.

K/C calls for patience here. I know that I did not sign up on title disc Josh. I was wondering if there were any other list that showed who was playing that paid Mace direct. Since I haven't let the cat all the way out of the bag yet, I will explain the way The Z Boaz Open will work for 2008.

Since I have done this more than a few times I have come to the conclusion that the event needs to be run in the following manner.

The event will be split into 4 pools. Pro, Adv A, Adv B, and Int/Rec. We will use the original and the temp on the north side of the tracks.

In order to pull this off it will require cooperation from all players (I realize that this is the toughest feat of all but I am confident you can do it). It will also require that all players that want to play this event be signed up by Friday, thats right you will have to be in the event before the day it starts.

Saturday will go like this. We will split the Adv pool into 2 groups and at 7:30 am Group A will play Z Boaz, Group B will play the temp. These pools will not exceed 54 players each (3somes). At approx. 10 AM the Pro Pool and the Int/Rec pools will hit the courses, these pools will be capped at 72 players (4somes). After that we will repeat the process.

At the end of the day on Saturday everyone will have 2 rounds in. Everyone will play one round of each on Saturday.

On Sunday 2 possible scenarios will take place, it depends on how many adv players sign up. If there is less than 90 adv players (witch I expect there will be) then the pools will be combined, and play the Original at 8:30 am on the original. If there is too many Adv players, we will keep them split and they will each play the Original one after the other. This will take a little longer to complete, but since they are small groups they will move through the course quickly. The Rec/Int pool will play the temp at the same time. This will be followed by the Pro pool starting around mid day (11am to 12ish). All of this will be followed by the Z Boaz Format Skins Match.

That is the info for this weekend.

Results from The Mid-week Event. (http://www.pdga.com/tournament/tournament_results.php?TournID=7541#Open)

We have an official course record for the park. It is the same as the unofficial one, 48 by Geoff Bennett. Great shooting.

45 players, not too bad for a work day. Thanks to all that participated.

And now for the witch hunters, all am entry fee's were $35, all pro's paid $50. From that the following fee's were deducted, $2 PDGA, $2 to EDGE, $2 to the Food Bank, $3 to NTS Bonus Fund, and last but not least $4 to the city of Ft Worth. Now start the fire!!

You know Mr. Robert Matthew Van Winkle, (you can't fool me, I knew that you used to do rap music back in 1990, or could he be your twin? http://www.femalefirst.co.uk/images/Vanilla_Ice.JPG ), as long as Dave is with me, Keystone black cannot make me a stumbling, fumbling, drunk off my left buttocks, babe magnet to hot republican women across north dallas, buffoon. This weekend is going to take total cooperation from everyone to make it happen. I don't know what to expect from today, but I have a feeling that I am not going to gain too many more players, if that remains true we will not use the temp course, just the original and the split pools.

If you have a basket bring it with you we may still need it. We can adjust to a different plan including a varied configuration that would include some holes on the north side of the tracks if we can't cross.

maceman
Feb 15 2008, 12:50 PM
One more thing to consider, we obviously will not be able to drive off the pavement so carpooling is a must. If you can ride out with someone do so. Park nose in on the street and worst case park across Winscott in the parking lots there.

And Miles all those that didn't know already, now are fully aware that it is going to be nasty this weekend, so move on to a new subject please. Or maybe you should start you own weather thread and call it "Live from the department of redundancy department, your redundant weather report, with your host Miles Redundant Seaborn" . :D

My only response to the above is, yes, I must be smoking something as it is a well known fact that "Rain" not "Keystone black" tends to unravel me a bit. But as it is, Dave Covalt lectured me on how to prevail during trying times and rainy weather. "Just remember my son, you are not made of sugar, but are a lump of coal. Do you think the lump of coal fears H2O? NO IT DOES NOT!!!! And a good thing it is, that it doesn't, as a wet lump of coal is best suited to raise a knot on the back of someone's head when launched into a crowd." It is unfortunate that sensui Covalt will not likely be with us tomorrow as he believes his duties call for him to be at home praying for us all to be safe and dry. :cool:In addition, my loving wife pre-paid for a non-refundable room for me this weekend, so I might as well come out and try to find new ways to keep my ciggy's dry. I was just hearing on the radio that the possiblity of tornadic activity exist for tomorrow.
