here's a pretty wild scorecard from Sam Ferran's round of 1 Under 67 today:
10 Pars
7 birdies
0 bogeys
0 double bogeys
0 triple bogeys
0 quadruple bogeys
0 quintuple bogeys
1 sextuple bogey
that's what winthrop does to an otherwise spectacular round. 1 bad hole isn't just a stroke or two. that's what makes Ken Climo's performance so far this week so amazing. to play 54 holes with only 2 bogeys requires an amazing mindset.

Uh . . .calm down. Tiger Woods career earnings: $87,127,633. That's what's he's won.
Tiger Woods career endorsements: Who cares it's a really silly number. I'm guessing that Tiger's endorsements for this week are more than 10 times Ken's endorsements for his career.
Disc golf is great. Ken Climo is great. Let's just not try to compare him to Tiger Woods.
Please don't say it's not about the money . . . unless it isn't. And if it isn't . .. well, it is.
I bet Ken could beat Tiger at disc golf. If the money was reversed 20 years ago would Ken Climo be the greatest disc golfer in the history of the game having made 87 million since then . .. I like to think so -- but that's not what's happened.
Nice win champ.

Please don't call me names.
Ken Climo is the best disc golfer of all time.
I didn't start the comparisons to Tiger Woods, I just felt a little perspective is in order. No offense was intended. Also retain some perspective -- Climo's not reading this stuff -- and if he does, let me know if he's upset, I'll retract it all.
Again -- calm down.
But while we're debating this you're now contending that Ken is more dominant than Tiger . . . right?

Not real sure 100 times is the appropriate number but what I do know is that it takes more physical ability to play disc golf than ball golf ( Ive played a lot of both) This is probably more so on par 4 and 5 style disc golf courses.

I think Paul is looking for some kind of opposition. Ken can perform surgical precision of the course like no other. Even the Monster Drives of Avery weren't enough. Ken is a Champ, both on and off the course. I walked a few holes with Val, she too is a champ. Her composure is fitting for all to emulate. PDGA Staff, Dot Guy's, and Char DGA. Good Job. Take the percentage of the total purse won from tiger and climo and compare those. Would take a lot of leg work to find that out though.
It is not about the money, the money is just a bonus.
I'd still give Tiger the dominance card. Climo is not far behind at all though. It has to do with the fact that Climo is being challenged constantly for his number one spot. By Nate Doss and formerly Barry. Tiger Woods doesn't even have to worry about that.

I would like to say thank you to Innova Champion and all the staff, volunteers and sponsors for putting on such a wonderful event. Even though I did not get to play this year, it is incredible to see all the work that gets done all week. I have changed the outlook of whom this event is run for, as I now believe that it is done for the staff to show how much they love this game. Bravo to all of them because they truly make this event what it is!
If it were up to me, Schwebby would be voted USDGC player of the week. He makes it a point to be involved with everything that happens all week long, he is a world class sportsman in my book.
I look forward to making this event next year, and I would like to thank all of the folks that supported me before and after monday qualifying. It is seeing old friends and making new friends that make this sport what it is, I look forward to seeing you all again next year.

doubt the 1040 thing... but who knows. Guess it should get a little 'easier' without the guys having to compete against people like Cale who had already qualified.
as far as those that got in but didnt have their shiz together and register... i think it was just Nikko and Hammock that didnt get in Monday... may have been others.
so Sam and I fish for discs each year and return a lot of your precious plastics. There are some we target for and most that just get dragged out of the more common areas.
Last year I learned some players after the event were throwing the discs left in lost and found, back into the water. Probably towards the center where we will never be able to get at them.
We raked 17 on Sat after the awards and rather than leave them to be thrown back in by jerks, I took them with me to return them to their owners if they want them back.
Now 17 had been combed over the previous day, so there aren't a lot.
If you see your disc, and if you would like the disc back, and are willing to reimburse me for shipping or can wait till you see me next. PM me with an address to send it.
I figue it can't cost more than $2 to send a disc in the mail.

Stack remember 5 people shot 1035 golf and one (Macrackin) shot 1040 golf to get in this year and none of those guys had qualified earlier in the year. i think that is giong to be level of golf every year to get in this event. it is different if you have one and only one round to play to shoot a score but when you can play as many rounds as you can fit in to shoot a score the bar will and should always be high.

I don't get it.
Watching that clip of John Gregory on Hole #17 was quite painful.
What I don't understand is unless you need to score a 2 on the hole why don't more players either throw a forehand off the tee or play to the lay-up zone and throw a forehand from there? Are there always winds that make a forehand too risky? There is so much room to the right of the pin. It appears to be strategic and scorecard suicide to attempt to play a shot at the pin given how little room for error there is at that end of the "island green". Why would a player attempt a backhand when a forehand looks to allow a player to play to a bailout position so much less risky than what one is left with by throwing almost any backhand shot? Is it because so many players don't have a decent enough forehand to use it with any confidence on a 250' shot?
I'm not criticizing anyone's decision-making because I wasn't there and if I was I'd have to play like a frickin' demon to score well. I'm just curious.
Does Harold smile or cringe when he sees players score in double digits on some of those holes?

I spent a considerable amount of time watching players attack hole 17. While there were all sorts of strategies utilized on that hole, it seemed the most consistently successful drives were the right-handed forearm shots which landed in the fat part of the green.

i witnessed a large amount of drives on 17, and of about 30 righty forehand drives only 1 did not come to rest inbounds. that, unfortunately, was matt o's 3rd round drive when he threw a little deep and it took an abnormal hop. his retee sidearm made it inbounds.

What happened to the baskets that were for sale on Ebay and listed on the USDGC site?
They said they were selling all of the baskets from the USDGC this year, with a $325 reserve for each one.
I wanted to see how much money hole 17 and 13 would raise.

Ebay pulled the auctions, basically b/c they were charity auctions that violated their charity auction terms or something similar. Innova/Zone Driven has been working on selling those custom tops for a couple of years now and it just hasn't come to light. Maybe next year since there should be more lead time and there appears to be general interest.

We raked 17 on Sat after the awards and rather than leave them to be thrown back in by jerks, I took them with me to return them to their owners if they want them back.
How about hole #5 I lost a Blue Orc, and Yellow Valk. both Star's. I would love to get ORC back. if you find both keep the Valk as a reward. I will pay for shipping.

I Is it because so many players don't have a decent enough forehand to use it with any confidence on a 250' shot?
actually as long as you threw an overstable disc the wind was good for the forehand(pushed it to wider part of green).
while many probably have decent forehands, I would guess many aren't comfortable enough to use it in that situation. I know of one former USDGC champ who I am pretty sure does not.

I think the best spotters at the tournament last weekend was Jason from hole #12's green and the biker dude (can't remember his name) on hole #4's green. Both guys were 100% into it. Dudes on hole #17 and #18 green deserve honorable mention as well.

i agree... and watching avery jenkins... he did that every round (i think) and was on the faarrr right side. I think theres something to seeing the pin that people think they should throw @ it. I told myself I would have either threw sidearm every round or layed up to the layup spot then thrown sidearm still and taken my 3 or 4

I would agree, the guy on hole 4 was the best!
Thanks again!
Hole 17 was fun, my score ranged from a 2 to a 6. Good Times!
Hole 13(888), was my worst hole doing no better then a 6, and my worst at a 8.
This was, BY FAR, the best event i have ever attended. Thanks to those who helped run it!
sorry, I was on the road home by 2pm on sunday. Try posting on the local boards as there are many disc fishers down there.

i was working the event and still driving people around in carts as it was getting dark on saturday and there were a couple guys fishing discs out along 5's fairway... was told that 1 is a 'good guy' that would try to get them back to the owner and the other just keeps them.
I drove the cart over and went through the bag of stuff he had found and there were only 3-4 discs (all without names) and after the fact I heard that someone else working the tourney went through the guys bag already and took all the ones with names out and put them in the lost/found.
So FWIW if you left and your disc wasnt returned yet it may have been after the fact... dont know what happens w/ the lost/found afterwards though... thats a different story.
I did take out the ones w/ the local area code 704 and call around to be sure they got back to the owners.

I lost a Blue 1st Run BUZZZ just off the shore on 5 and never saw it again........Name AND PDGA # on the back..........Lost a Brand new 1st Run Z Tsunami on hole 4 up in the Cedars and never got that one back either..........Same thing name AND # on it but never returned..........If anyone has these I would be more than happy to pay shipping and send a disc in reward.........Oh and about hole 17........Ive been throwing sidearm off the tee since I learned a decent one at the Hambrick and did not miss the green ONCE when I was playing safe........However once the times in practice I tried going for the pin I missed several but I also got a skip ace while trying to attack the pin..........Bottom line is its a simple sidearm off the tee to the fat area no matter what the wind is doing............And its still and easy stable backhand shot to the fat part of the green............EVERYONE I saw having trouble was going at the pin.........NOT playing safe to the fat part of the Island Green!!!

I had a heck of a time w/17 in 06 - and spent a good hour practicing both the tee shot, and the layup before the tournament started. I resolved to let the wind condition dictate whether or not I layed up off the tee. As it turned out, I went for it every time - and got birdies 3 out of 4 times - a 12 stroke swing from the previous year. That stat alone - became a tournament highlight for me :)

just 3 i think... 2 on 7 the first day and as I was pulling into the parking lot and helping explain DG to the security guard I pointed up towards 14s basket and started to explain when... the 3rd ace of the tourney crashed chains... a few others honked horns and went nuts in the parking lot area.

Thanks. For those shots I used a Canon 5D and a 70-200mm lens with a 1.4x extender. All of the pictures on my account have been cropped from original size and then I bumped the contrast up a bit using curves to make them a little brighter. A few of them I also had to clone out some people in the background that ruined shots.

FYI .. people talked about Wiggins Jr (aka... Bigg Wigg) during Monday Qualifiers saying that he would be the youngest to play in the USDGC if he made it.
Found some interesting information ... it appears there was a 12yr old girl that played in 1999 named Nikki Ross. (there may have been someone else younger... just found this particular instance)
Theres a trivia question for the spectators guide next year! ;)

I did a search on Nikki Ross Sports and came up with this possibility. The Nikki Ross in the article is a Cross Country runner in college so the age would be right.
http://csusports.athleticsite.com/article.asp?articleID=1940
This one may be more likely though since Ithaca is a lot closer to her last known home in PA in the PDGA records:

Nikki never played in the USDGC. She played in the U.S. Women's Disc Golf Championships, which were held concurrently with the USDGC in Rock Hill/Charlotte area from 1999-2001. I believe the women played the first 3 days at Hornet's Nest in Charlotte, and then played the final round at Winthrop. So Nikki has played Winthrop, but did not compete in USDGC.
She did win 3 consecutive Am Worlds (2001-2003), and I don't believe she's played any disc golf events since then. She's a really good player, and she's about 20 now (I believe she was 16 when she won Am Worlds in 2003). Hopefully she's doing well in college or whatever her endeavors might be.
