Big kudos going out to the Hamster man Brian Lameroux ( I spell it wrong every time ) . Having assited in the installation of the courses, I have been able to watch this course " grow " over the years. It is coming along very nice, and I look forward to every round I get to play there ... With a little work on the tee-pads, this place will be perfect. Also- hole 13 on the beaver , I got the 3 twice on that pin this weekend, really fun hole !!!

getting to z-boaz is pretty easy. Just exit Winscott off of I-20 (which is on the west side of ft. worth) and go North. the street you need to turn left on is only about 1000-1500 ft off of the freeway, and I'm 99% sure it's called Old Benbrook. Turn left there and go about another 750ft and turn right into the parking lot. Veterans is a bit more complicated and further from the freeways :(

We are comming from about 5 hours away and have 4 1st time Z-Boaz-ers, any answer will be very helpful for trip-planning purposes.
1. Is there poison ivy at the courses we'll be playing?
2. Will there be water jugs spaced around the courses or should we bring multiple water bottles?
3. Since this is an A-tier, do we (as adv. and int.) need to wear a collared shirt for each round or only the 3rd and finals?
4. We will be arriving around 5pm, what is traffic around Ft. Worth like on a friday at rush hour?
If there is any other useful info you could give us it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

1. Is there poison ivy at the courses we'll be playing? <font color="red"> This time of year is not too bad, but please be vary of the fuzzy vines on the tree, they are dormant, but potent.. Also, keep your eyes open for ivy anytime you are near the railroad tracks... </font>
2. Will there be water jugs spaced around the courses or should we bring multiple water bottles? <font color="red"> Bring water, this time of year it is not necessary like it is in the summer time .. Feb 07 2007, 03:17 PM
I am currently getting as much mulch on the ground as possible , so the muddy spots should not be too bad..
Creek crossing are taken care of , no worries there.
My only concern will be the mud . If you have cleats, bring them just in case. It is not that the course has issues with standing water, but after 180 people play 4 rounds of golf, it will get a little messy. We are working hard to ensure that rain or shine , people will have a good time .

I do believe that Brian will allow people to tee from behind the pad if it gets too messy on the tee's . I do not anticipate many if any problems.....

Now the temp course...........
Different story. Not alot of erosion over there because there is not a lot of foot traffic. SO mostly it will be grass. There will be a spot or two where the city has recently had to do some digging , but the grass is slowly growing back...

I myself would bring
Couple of pairs of socks - because you never know
Wet weather gear- it's Texas, ya' never know
Extra pair of shoes- because you never know
Umbrella- to chase those rain clouds away
Positive attitude- Z-Boaz will break it off in ya' the first time around.

If we pre-registered do we have to check in at any point?

If you have not played one of his events this year, he will need you to fill out a little paperwork. Just check in with Brian, Brandon, or myself when you get there ..

Also, you will be able to renew your PDGA memberships on site..... Nice little extra something for those not current.

Let us be real for a second ...
Take a day off of work- that could cost me anywhere from 200-350 dollars.
Add that to the entry fee and the cost of gas, lunch, and consumables ;)
the grand total =
ONE EXPENSIVE DAY OF DISC GOLF
I played last year, and all I could do is think about work. It was not fun...

47 players is a great turnout as far as I am concerned. The conditions are as close to ideal as you could ask for in Feb. Most if not all of the pins are in the long positions, with the exception of hole 6, it is in the short.

Check in to let us know you are here, if you haven't played a North Texas Event then you need to fill out a form.

Even with the fair weather players from this area the spots will go fast this week. don't wait to sign up if you want to play, if it doesn't matter to you one way or the other then wait and see.

A question so I can have a clearer understanding of how payout works. Not that I'm going to be in the money in the future. :p

Last week at the Cedar Hill tourney, there were 47 intermediate players. Entry fee was $40. 1st place paid out $65.
At the mid-week at Veterans there were 16 intermediate players. Entry fee was $35. 1st place paid $95.

Total money collected for Cedar Hill: $1880
Total money colleced for Veterans: $560

Total Intermediate Cedar Hill payout: $1013 (53% payout)
total Int. Veterans payout: $470 (83% payout)

Average Payout per player Cedar Hill: $21.55
Average Payout per player Veterans: $29.37

Now, I know that Cedar Hill was a B Tier, and Veterans was a C tier, but where does the difference in payout come from? How is payout determined?

Thanks for everyones comments.

Player's packs?

$10 per player for players pack.... mace said it at the beginning of cedar hill to come spend it at his tables.

that alone changes your figure to $1410 which is a $30 payout per player which is slightly higher than the vet.

Ah, that makes sense. So payout is usually the same at all tourney's, no matter the Tier?

Player packs are required at B-tier and higher for Ams. No player pack required at C-tier. That's why you need to know the value of player packs to even have a chance to determine payout comparisions. Plus, some events include lunch and have lots of CTP prizes which also count in payout.

Here is the update for Z Boaz. (http://www.pdga.com/tournament/tournament_results.php?TournID=6474#Open)

In answer to your payout question, the difference is the players package.

From all am entry fee's at Cedar Hill $10 goes to you in a merch credit. $3 to the PDGA. $2 to Cedar Hill. $2 to EDGE. $2 to the food bank. This allows everyone to take something home from the weekend.

Veterans was a C tier. Fee's out were $2 PDGA Fee. $2 to Food Bank. $2 to Edge. The rest went to payout.

Each event is different, and there are different fee's associated with each event for many different reasons. If you want to look over the report I will be glad to show it.

Just curious - where in PDGA documentation is it allowable to count lunch (or other similar amenities) towards payout?

ck34
Feb 08 2007, 12:49 AM
Lunch may still be an unclarified issue for Ams. It appears you can subtract it from the entry fee to reduce the base entry fee from which payouts are calculated. Or, include a reasonable value in the payout. It's definitely not part of pro payout. I would contact Dave on specific situations but I'm pretty sure events in SoCal among others have taken lunch cost into account.

rhett
Feb 08 2007, 12:54 AM
I don't include any fair-market value for lunch in my payout calcs. It would defintely boost my payout percentages if I did.

ck34
Feb 08 2007, 12:58 AM
How about deduct that value to determine the base?

From my standpoint, I can't remember going to a sanctioned event where lunch was provided in the entry fee around this region. Lots of events where food was available for purchase in advance or setup to order during the break. That's why I would ask Dave what the scoop is. I know it's been discussed on the Comp Committee but not fully resolved.

How about use sponsorship money to pay for it as it benefits everyone instead of just the top 40%? I think providing a meal is one of the best things you can do for that reason.

For EIEIO, part of the facility fee pays for your lunch. So it's not in the "entry fee" number nor is any retail value added for it.

ck34
Feb 08 2007, 01:06 AM

So it is deducted in this case if the facility fee is pulled out to determine base entry fee which is specifically allowed.

Doesn't matter. He should have known he was playing that much better. Just look at all the >915 rounds compared to the <900

Feb 09 2007, 10:58 AM
For those of you interested , majority of the temp course is marked for practice, the last 4-5 holes are missing , but you will get to see most of it . Enter main parking lot , east of hole 4 @ the Z. Walk parallel with vickery/winscott and you will find the first tee. You will have to walk out and find the marking for the pin, but you get the idea... Follow the creek towards the baaseball fields and you will be able to see most of the temp course.

For those that will not get to practice , be prepared to throw a lot of canopy shots. I think people are going to like the temp. set up. Those that can throw true golf shots should have no problem coming in under par. Those that have trouble with tree's off the tee, prepare for a long weekend...

Feb 09 2007, 11:05 AM
Also, spectators and non-participants will be allowed to play the temp course during the lunch break. This opportunity is being offered so that we can keep an eye on the baskets whilst the tournament is not in progress. Also, this allows casuals and spectators to play a new course...
Win-Win for all....

Here is the deal people, the 6th annual Z-Boaz Open is full. A wait list has started . So far there are 6 people on the list. Due to circumstances with on-line registration, there may be a little flexibility with entrants. Everybody knows that there will be some individuals registered that will not make the event, so you do have a chance to play . On behalf of Brian, I will ask that all registered players check in ASAP tomorrow... This will help weed out the no shows and help wait list players get a spot on a card. With everybody's cooperation, we will make this event just as special as it has always been...

And this comment is from me " discboomer " . If I catch anybody giving Brian or Brandon any grief about this event filling and not being able to play, we are going to have a little " come to jesus meeting " in the parking lot.... Everybody has known this event was coming up for sometime now , and everybody has had plenty of time to register via on-line transactions, snail mail, or in person with Brian.

On behalf of Brian, I would like to thank everybody for their patience and cooperation. Thank you very much for coming to Ft. Worth, we are always glad to see you. Everybody knows that Brian will be as accomodating as he possibly can be . But it is not fair to punish those that registered ahead of time ....

This is why TD's preach pre-registration......

Good luck to all the waitlisters!

Paul Owen ...welcome to MA1....

I think we have a bagger in Intermediate. Someone is rated 922. Is that legal?

Oh, yes I am scared. Just look at my rating! :p

I don't know Paul, but I believe he can plan MA2. This is from the competition manual.

22.2. Exceptions
A. Players are allowed to enter a ratings based division they would otherwise be ineligible to
participate only under the following circumstances
(1) If approved before the event by the PDGA Tour Manager. <font color="red"> </font>
(2) Players who have become ineligible for a division due to a ratings update may
participate for two weeks following the update, provided they are pre-registered for the
event in question, at the discretion of the TD. <font color="black"> </font>
(3) If competing in an applicable points series (see Section 2.2 B for specifics)
B. Players may be allowed to enter a ratings based division they would otherwise be ineligible to
participate in as part of a points Series provided that
(1) The Series Director has contacted the PDGA prior and received approval from the
PDGA Tour Manager.
(2) The Series allows players to stay in the division for the entire Series.
(3) The player has not competed in a higher division at any time during the Series.
(4) The players rating does not exceed 20 points above the rating ceiling for the division
they wish to compete in.
His rating was adjusted on Jan 30.

<font color="red"> </font>

You're right!

he was not preregistered before the update which to me is what the rules are saying. Am I missing something else?

Well said Lee, I can act as Holy Hammer if need be.

Those of you that show and don't get in, there is some World-Class talent that would love for you to be a part of gallery. You can learn a lot from just walking and watching, ask Des. That is how she learned how to play next level.

And, you get to play the temp course at half-time, how cool.

Feb 09 2007, 11:26 PM
the guy signed up for it well after knowing his rating so I dont see any justification for him playing intermediate not to mention this is not a part of a points series which takes care of the second part of the rule. Maybe that is just me and maybe that is because I am playing intermediate too... call me old fashioned.

I was going to take first anyhow, I am just looking out for the guy who wants second.

Feb 09 2007, 11:33 PM
Players have a 2-week grace period after a ratings update as long as they were pre-registered before the ratings update was posted. In this case, the player would have to have been pre-registered by Jan 30th. Otherwise he has to play in Advanced unless there are extenuating circumstances that Mace would have to get approved by Gentry.

Here is the latest update for Z Boaz. (http://www.pdga.com/tournament/tournament_results.php?TournID=6474#Open)
Due to some uncontrollable circumstances we are going to let most if not all of the players on the list in. There are a couple of people (including Paul) that have limited options, but that is how it goes.

We will be adding an extra hole on each course to accommodate this giant crowd.

I am sure that Nate, 2K and Rusco are all not to happy about only getting 1 round from the shorts. I had been talking ZBoaz up to 2K for a year. I guess the course doesn't matter, everyone is playing the same thing.

I was trying to remember how much better you ran your event and all the fun we had with such a perfectly smooth event, but my senility is getting the best of me, Chris, 'cause it's just not coming to me.

Feb 11 2007, 01:40 PM
Well I haven't played in a lot of DG tournaments so I'm not sure how they all work. This one was only my 3rd and first A tier. And due to a freak accident I was unable to finish. :mad:That's a whole other story.

However, I will have to say that I think Mace and Crew are doing a great job!!!

I can't imagine what it would be like to run a tournament that is already full at 180 players the day before. Only to get setup the day of and have something like 30 more players standing in line asking to get in.

In ball golf tournaments, which I have played for 20+ years, this just isn't possible. I would have to guess that an A Tier event would be comparable to a state level ball golf tournament or even a higher level tournament considering the world class players here this weekend.

And in most cases those entries are closed a week before or up to a month before in some cases. On occasion a wait list is available. And if your not contacted before the day the tournament starts, because someone did call in in advance and withdraw, then you just have to go to the course and take your chance. And there are only a handfull of players who will even take this chance at getting in.

Another big difference is that ball golf tournaments at this level are started via tee times and not a shotgun start. So you could be waiting around next to the starter all day as he checks the players in 10 min prior to their tee time to see if there are any no shows. If no one checks in then you get a spot. Otherwise your waiting until the next group and so on. I've known guys who have gotten in and others who showed up at 7:00am and then get back into their car at 2:30pm because they didn't get in.

With a shotgun start your forced to check in all players prior to the start so you can see if anyone hasn't shown up and if you have a spot available. What I learned this weekend is that is a tough job when your forced into it at the last minute because you want to accommodate as many players as possible.

Overall I'd have to say that the majority are having a great time and taking the rest in stride.

It's 2:00 I played advanced payed $72 there were 65 or something people in my division. I payed this money in advance to make sure I got a spot. Now I'm at home because of whatever reason it was to let in an extra 20 or 30 people. Those same people will be back next year getting in on saturday. (It worked this year) However I should have played better golf or lack their of but still payed my money to play 3 1/2 rounds. I still had nine holes who's to say I wouldn't ace. So I was sold on something false. My bad. Intermediate divison no cuts were made oh by the way they only paid $52. So where is the incentive. I think the advanced divison really got hosed this weekend. Two full rounds from that crap course somebodys probably going to get hit with a foul ball. Anything can happen in nine holes. Will I play another event probably but very unhappy with the way it was ran this weekend.

sounds like a lot of sour grapes to me. by the way, the only reason mace had to take waiting list entries was due to some technical difficulties on the site. If you paid extra, it's because you didn't sign up early enough. If you got cut, it's because you didn't play well enough. Please, for the love of whatever diety you want to believe in, quit crying and blaming other people. By the way, I took myself right out of easy cash during that final 9, so my experience wasn't all that great either... but at least I can admit that it was *my* fault.

On an unrelated note, even though I let the final 9 tear apart a somewhat decent tournament showing, I'm having a lot of fun in advanced. Meeting new players, competing with some really talented individuals, making some good friends. For all you baggers thinking about staying in intermediate to get one more win... come on up, you'll be glad you did :). Great showing for all divisions this weekend.
