On behalf of the Shady Oaks Disc Golf Club & Final 9 Sports, we are very proud of Jim Oates and his 2007 Pro World Masters Win!!!
Bruce & Jenny Knisley
I second that...and btw, Harold was by far the crowd favorite!! He played awesome all week. Way to go you NorCal'ers. 29 of us, I hear. The most for any state! Yes!
Let me know if I'm wrong on that stat.
Cali usually has the most players (host state has more now & then) BUT Cali ALWAYS takes home the MOST $.. :D
BTW...I third that......as well as Anni Kreml repeating and the strong showing by HH, KL & Josh A...... :D
Great showing by NorCal.... :D

Nate does not deuce Highbridge Gold#16, the moat hole, and Markus does. IT'S ALL TIED UP!!!
He missed his uphill 30 footer into a headwind. It rose over the top.

The competitor that drove OB was Mike Randolph. Markus's putt for deuce apparently rattled through the chains and out. He and Nate take 3s.
Nate's putt tried to squeeze in low, but got chain-swung nubbed. It was 90% in.

Nate's drive reportedly went into the woods, but he made a heroic upshot and saved a 3. The approach from Markus Kllstrm reportedly went long and he was not able to make the putt and takes a 4. Nate Doss heads into the final hole, Blueberry Hill#2, with a 1-stroke lead.
Nate threw a great upshot from the right side of the shule on HB 18. He said he had been there twice before in the tourney. The familiarity paid off. Marcus was in the middle of a medium sized bush in the middle of the fairway. His shot came out too hot and blew by on the right side. He almost hit my chair :othat I had abandoned to talk to someone. It was sitting pin-high and would have given him a putt. Nate would have been peeved! I carried my chair the rest of the way . Nate won it right there because hole #2 at Blueberry is an easy hole for Open players and the wind was down. Nate was able to just lay up from 28 for the win. Marcus' drive wasn't very good and #2 is a tough elevated green to recover to. DGA/Discraft take the title. BTW, 3 out of the 4 finalists were Discraft sponsored. Discraft even had some cool flags they were carrying around the final nine. Great marketing as well as indicating to the players the wind conditions. I heard some ill stuff was said about it from some Innova players, but my lips are sealed. Would have liked to have seen a Twisted Flyer flag out there!!!

True dat, but he putts really hard. He putted after Nate and could have taken the lead into the last 2 holes. It just didn't happen for him. I ran into him in the Shell station in Mellon right after the awards ceremony. I congratulated him for his sportsmanship that he showed. He had a smile on his face on the last hole. Priceless.

The only holes I did not care for were 6 on Woodland Bear and 18 on Blueberry. There were too many trees on the fairways and no clear skill route. IMHO, these were "luck" holes. There were some "extra" trees that could be removed from 6 Highbridge as well.
I have only one response to 18 Blueberry... Thumber! Up. Down. Park.

Orum got a 5 on 18 BH.
But I gotta say, he was a still able to smile and joke about his 880 rated round... while Nikko was screaming, smacking discs together while others were putting, and generally being a disturbance to play with. All this while shooting a 1020 rated round. Nikko needs to learn to just let bad shots go, and be QUIET while others are throwing. More times than I could count, he would whistle while someone was starting their run up.... Not that he was whistling before they started their runup, he'd start as soon as they committed to their shot. Weird stuff.
Someone told him (I think) "you could learn a lot from Matt (Orum), he's smiling and courteous and probably having the worst round of his life at Worlds. THAT's a professional. I gotta hand it to Matt, he didn't let it get him down, or at least, affect him outwardly. That's mature beyond MY years.
I won't even talk about Boro's blow up. I was trying to drive on 8 Gold when that happened, but a lot of others saw that better than I did. I was concentrating on my shot too much to be distracted by temper tantrums.

I have to say having played some rounds with Nikko once he blows up it affects everyone in the group.......I dont know if he does it cuz he knows it messes the people hes playing with up or what but I was putting together a pretty solid round in Columbus when I was on his card and then came the temper and the whining and all of that and it really knocked me off of my game. And I know I should be able to rise about it but its tough when he does it after every shot on every hole for like 6 holes in a row. By the way Nikko is a friend of mine and I do enjoy playing with him and hanging around him before and after golf but **** kid just chill out!!! No one shot or round is worth getting that worked up over.
Then again he is still a young buck and being proffesional and calm on the outside while fuming on the inside is something that comes with age so hopefully in a few years it will all be gone.
And the truth is what you witnessed might very well be what everyone talks about when they say he has gotten better.

Finally settled in at home after ten glorious days of disc golf. It is an honor and a privilege to be able to benefit from the hard work of so many people who dedicated some portion of their lives to setting up and running the Worlds. Mucho thanks to all of the organizers, spotters, pole hole diggers, grass cutters, cement pourers, score card tabulators and everyone else who pitched in so that a few hundred of us would never have to lift a finger unless a disc was in it...and that is PRICELESS!! Howdy Matt!! I also had great cards every round. I really enjoyed the format of staying on the same card for two rounds on the first day when I shot with Matt, Jim Oates and John Ahart. Matt and I were joking that our card featured two World Champions and two caddies...great fun! Oates shot great golf on a short woodsy and a long golfy...and definitely deserved his title. Congrats to Mr. Oates!!!
I had a wish list of players to shoot with and I was fortunate to shoot with all of them except Joe Mela...but watching his sick roller on the last hole of the final 9 made up for that!
Matt, it was great seeing you. Brought back lots of good MADC memories (which was fitting given the quality of the courses). Hope to CYA next year in Kalamazoo!!

My favorites Holes on Woodland Bear were 2, 3, 4 and 7, which forced fairway placement over sheer distance.
Agreed. Those three holes in a row (WB - 234) were the best stretch of holes in the complex, imo. Would have played well for the open division also.

Those are part of the gold level holes in the first seven of the Woodland Bear that will become The Bear by the end of this year. I'm sorry that John and his team couldn't complete The Bear in time for Worlds but hopefully it gave players a glimpse of what's in store for the rest of the course. Hole 8 is 1000 ft slow turnover downhill with the pin perched on the right side of a ravine with a view toward the north on the approach.

My thoughts on the week...
- The pars, in my mind, should have been....
What is Par? (http://www.pdga.com/msgboard/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=62882&page=0&fpart=12&vc =1) At this point in time "par" has no consistent standards in disc golf, so it's silly to discuss.
ChrisWoj
Aug 08 2007, 05:47 PM
Personally, I think that par should be the amount of strokes a typical scratch (read: 1000 rated) golfer can reach 100 feet away and on in. Very few scratch players take more than two strokes from 100 feet and they occasionally put one in, similar to being on the edge of a pretty large green in stick golf, right?

There's lots to like about that definition of par, but I'd change the "close range" distance to 130 ft. for Gold level. Also, I'd only use a 1000 rated player as an expert player for a Gold level course. For Blue, White, and Red level courses I'd use standards appropriate to that course level.

Here's the Lead Open scorecard for the Saturday afternoon round on Highbridge Gold where Markus Kllstrm shot a course record of 55, which was -12 under par 67, and a 1066-rated round. What's scary is that he took a bogey 6 on the 930-ft. pro par five 6th hole that all the other competitors birdied. Note that he birdied 8 out of 9 holes on the back nine and was upset to have "missed" hole 12!

I have to disagree with someone that says there are to many trees in the fairway, what a joke!!! The bear course is a GREAT discription of North WOODS golf, this isn't the North fields of Wisconsin!! ONE short course, a World Champion should be able to score, just because she couldn't dominate the field with her distance, doesn't deserve a bashing like that!!! :o

Pro Worlds 2007 Highlights
Midwest Airlines. I travel for work and am used to some crappy airline service such as one gets with U.S. Air. The best airlines in my experience have been Alaska and Continental, and I have now added Midwest to that list. The planes are clean, the staff is friendly, and you get a just-baked warm chocolate chip cookie on every flight! You can’t beat that with a stick.
Gathering of the Frisbee family - so great to see friends and all the familiar faces.
John Jokinen – What an amazing piece of property! Thank you so much for creating Highbridge Hills and allowing Frisbee freaks to invade your world.
Tournament Director Chuck Kennedy – his efforts to design these courses and work tirelessly over the last several years to plan for Pro Worlds should get a standing ovation.
All the staff that helped out during the week, especially our scoring crew - Larry Kruse, Bill Newman, Old Man, Mom, Rock of Aces, and the Champ. You guys were THE BEST to work with.
The friendliness of people in the Midwest – As an east-coaster, what a refreshing change. People are actually happy to be around you instead of being annoyed that you’re in their way.
The beauty of Northwoods Wisconsin – my wife hiked to pretty much every waterfall between Highbridge and Michigan, and took me to the best ones. Where the Montreal river divides Wisconsin and Michigan and crashes over Superior Falls into Lake Superior is breathtaking!
Deepwater Grille / South Shore Brewery – the best food and beer in town.
Getting to meet several DISCussion Board regulars in person for the first time – Robert Leonard, (MTL) Rob Johnston, (AviarX) Kenny Lee (Pterodactyl) and many others.
Cale Leiviska – His energy and enthusiasm is contagious. On Saturday during the last round before the semis, I did live scoring on the lead card and he was bouncing around and having a great time. Cale threw his drive into the woods left off the tee on the pro par five 6th hole, and then threw a pitch-out that traveled no further than about 75-100 ft. With perhaps some 450 feet left to the polehole, he threw a beeline drive right down the center of the fairway that avoided all the trees and hyzered perfectly over the drop-off and finished 3 feet from the polehole for a drop-in birdie 4. It was stunning.
Markus Kllstrm – Like Scott Stokely in the late 90s, your jaw drops watching Kllstrm throw. Just like Stokely, Kllstrm is the biggest thower in our sport and runner-up in Worlds several times now (2003, 2007) Cale said it best at the MSDGC this past weekend when he admitted that Markus is playing a different game than all of us. Sandstrom might have the distance record, but I’ve never seen anyone throw golf shots like Kallstrom. Robert Leonard wrote in his blog about one of the greatest golf shots he had ever seen – hole#15 on Highbridge Gold during the final 9. To escape the woods, it’s about 475 feet uphill through a wooded corridor that narrows to about 30 feet wide. Kllstrm’s drive made it to the open, leaving him a run at deuce on this 570’ uphill gold level pro par four! There were many other holes throughout the week where he was defeating the course design and putting for eagle. (Blueberry#17 comes to mind) He also threw some moon shots over trees that I hadn’t even conceived of, let alone witnessed someone actually execute.
Not-so-high lights
Realizing that we drove over the 35W bridge over the Mississippi River in Minneapolis only 5 days before the tragic accident there.
Not enough thanking of TD Chuck Kennedy during the awards ceremony. It has taken him years to plan this event and I thought it came off almost without a hitch. His hard work over the years should be appreciated by all.
Scoring errors. One would think that at a Pro Worlds people would take extra care to double and triple check their scorecards, but I was amazed at the number of penalty strokes that had to be assessed due to incorrect scorecards.
Competitor whining – When anything went wrong it was the biggest deal in the world to them. The staff had no control over the poor cell phone coverage & internet access. Many tended to complain about anything new or different. I got sick of hearing complaints about the “Buncr” on Highbridge Gold#2, the sorting experiment where competitors played together the first two rounds no matter the score, the way the Ace pool was set up for individual courses, and the elevated basket on Woodland Bear#17, all of which ruffled a ridiculous amount of feathers. We’ve had hanging and elevated baskets at courses for Pro Worlds for years now! I didn’t hear anyone complaining about the elevated baskets at the USDGC or calling that “putt-putt golf.”
Lowlights
Economy parking at the Philadelphia airport being sold out and having to pay $17 per day in Short Term parking for ten days.
Getting delayed on a layover on the way home and arriving in Philadelphia at 1:15 AM for a flight that was supposed to arrive at 10:30 P.M.
Getting to our car in the parking garage and finding the battery dead, calling AAA, waiting 1 hours for them to arrive, and not getting home until 4:45 AM. Ugh.
Just like chains that get tangled or portable baskets at other events that get jostled off level, players could have releveled that basket or asked the marshal, who I believe was on that hole, to do it. The basket was securely level before the event and was never intended to lean.

An egregious omission was the player's pack and specifically the Pro Worlds Course Caddy Guides. These are some of the nicest I've ever seen! My copy sits by my desk at work and I love paging through it in downtimes to virtually bring me back to Highbridge, if only for a moment. I could do without Chuck's "Spec-Taters" though. :D

I tried to get him to spend a little more time on the Spectaters, I believe I said "Just don't Russet."

Jeff,
I agree Chuck did a fantastic job and put in endless hours. Now he and JJ need to finish up the Bear course so I have a new excuse to drive 5 1/2 hours.

There's an excellent recap of the competition, as well as an interview with Highbridge owner John Jokinen, in this month's Disc Golf World News.

The 2007 Pro Worlds DVD is coming along nicely. I was in Philly last weekend working with Media Active to help them complete some voice and graphics work. Looks good for being available in time for a Christmas gift.

got mine yesterday, watched bits a pieces.
What I saw was ok, a few things I didn't like...
1. The long hole where Cale Markus and Nate three'd and Mike 4'd, the graphic (and at the tournament too) this was listed as a 5. However, the players putts for 3 say for birdie.
2. KC in the crowd was said to be "texting someone" He was actually messing with a hand mic doing commentary for DGTV.
3. The play up of Mike Randolph was a bit much. Did he come from the B pool? Yeah, and they def. let us know it. However, they acted like him making the finals was a huge shock - like he was 995 or something - Easily a top 15 talent in disc golf.
4. The only unique thing about Granite Ridge was that songs were used to name the holes? Come on....
Things I liked
1. I liked the "news feel" to the DVD. "In 45 min or so, we got the pro finals" stuff like that. And all though Billy Crump was on site and Adam Zuker was in a studio much much later, the "lets go to Billy Crump on site" was nice and was well produced. That is what is called a look live and is exactly how they should be done.
2. The commentary was nice and I thought the little pieces of knowledge from Chuck (such as this hole was put in place to connect the courses and this was such and such hole from the week, this was played over golf tees) was great for people not there.
Haven't seen the whole thing, but overall, I'm happy. I would have like to seen more coverage from the week though.

I agree with 1-4 and I already had 1 in my edit corrections for the next run. Knew KC was recording for DGTV. But if you didn't know, it could have been what he was doing so I didn't ask them to rerecord the commentary there for that. Maybe overdone for Randolph. But considering how little he plays in top level events over the years, it's rather amazing he can still get to those final 9s. I commented on the minimal GR comments from Crump when I saw the first draft. That's why we included my additional commentary on the course.
In the future, I would like to see quick tours of the signature holes from each course in an early part of the DVD and the bird's eye hole graphics used on all holes shown so people can understand them better. The low camera angles and shooting back from the fairway toward the tee doesn't give viewers a sense of how the holes look or play.

I'm not 100% sure on this, but I think Mike was the first person in Worlds history to make the final 9 from the B pool...which is most likely the reason that it was such a focus in the video. And Like Chuck said, he never plays touring events anymore and the fact that he can still hang with the top players in the world is pretty amazing

For those who ordered the PW2007 DVD and didn't visit the event or are just curious, we will soon be making the bird's eye graphics of each hole, that were printed in the caddybooks, available for downloading from the 2007 Pro Worlds site: www.2007proworlds.com (http://www.2007proworlds.com)
It may take a few days before our webmaster can get them set up for downloading.

It wasn't too long ago when the PDGA solicited feedback about these videos in 2004/2005 as they transitioned from Alacrity Media to Media Active. It was my understanding at that time that this same sentiment of having more focus on the courses was shared by many others. This has been my major complaint about practically every Worlds video to date. In my opinion, the most important job of these videos is to show the courses and give people who were not able to attend the event a glimpse at what competitors faced. There should be a detailed tour of the signature holes from each course, with perhaps a top pro or the course designer throwing the holes to show the optimal shots and/or landing areas.
I was disappointed when even after soliciting feedback, the 2005 Pro Worlds video from Allentown, PA followed the same format as prior years of just showing each division playing the final 9 temp holes at Little Lehigh Parkway. There is some random footage of play during the week in the video but you have no idea what holes or even what course they are at. It was a crime that the scenic Jordan Creek course and the awesomely challenging Nockamixon State Park course, with predominantly pro par four and pro par five holes, were barely even shown in the video. The 2004 Pro/Am Worlds from Des Moines, IA is especially unwatchable because all it shows is 10+ divisions playing the exact same final 9 layout which I'm told was nothing like any of the other courses which the competitors played during the week.
Here we are in 2007 and again, all we see in the Pro Worlds 2007 video is the various divisions playing the same final 9 layout. How tragic that the most scenic and signature holes from the Blueberry Hill, Granite Ridge, and Highbridge Gold courses aren't even shown! There's barely even any mention of the Woodland Bear course, with its narrow fairways, heavy rough and elevated basket between three trees that was the talk of the tournament.
These videos are professional productions and in general they do a very good job, but by focusing just on the final 9 and not showing any course footage, there's an enormous amount of the "story" of these tournaments and the experience of playing in Pro Worlds that is not being told.

Wow! I haven't watched my copy yet (Thanks BTW Chuck!!!) but will do so this weekend.
Great comments Jefe...I have always thought that they should select one particular "signature" type hole, and follow the action as all of the divisions play through on it. I always find it interesting to watch the variety of approaches that the competitors use to attack a given hole. That double-pond hole going uphill would've been a great candidate in my mind...Markus going over it all was spectacular to see! :D
I can't wait to watch mine - Thanks again Chuck!

I haven't seen this one yet.
But in response to those who want broader coverage, my suggestion would be this. For the "minor" divisions at least, capture footage of the leaders on a non-final nine course. Use that to tell the story of their division, and give folks a glimpse of some other holes. Vary the venues so different divisions are highlighted while playing different courses. This would make for more variety and would be pretty easily done since these divisions are usually pretty well sorted out after a day or two. The cream is at or near the top and the eventual winners and top finishers can be easily captured on selected holes as desired. This can happen earlier in the week, and maybe involve select commentators who can reflect on the division, the course, the battles going on, etc.
That's how I'd do it, at least.
My memory is that the PDGA has a pretty lengthy list of "what we want" and that would tend to be what drives the DVD layout and flow. I don't know how the current proposal reads, though.

Hey Jeff,
KL here, great to meet you and ching at 07 Worlds and also get to play some holes with you guys.
I haven't seen the video yet, but at least that was one of the most bee-atching final 9's of all time.
I'm not sure if I made the final cut or if I'm on the cutting room floor, but they filmed our group for quite a few holes. I hope some of that made the final cut.
Gotta go and don't hate me for strapping on the Burton!!! :D KL

Hey Kenny! Meeting you and playing a practice round together was one of my highlights of the week. No lie!
I got nothing against snowboarders. Although I respect the right of a private resort to choose who they allow on their property.

Didn't you post this on a different thread?
From Jeff LaG.:
"....if these resorts want to prohibit snowboarders who because of the way they sideswipe when they turn scrape away the freshies in the glades & enhance the size of moguls on the bump runs, as well as typically make sudden wide and unpredictable turns around others skiers, snowboard out of control such that they cannot suddenly stop or avoid other people or objects, fail to yield to people in front of them who have the right of way, stop where they obstruct trails, and do not observe posted signs and warnings, (typically SLOW signs)...."
It sure does sound like you have a problem with other people who want to use National Forest land with equipment that differs from your preferred choice.
EDIT:
Just pointing out a contradiction, not a personal attack ;)

So, back to the video. I received mine yesterday and just have a couple of comments. I think that for the price it was really short and didn't cover much. I know in previous videos there are segments that you can get to in the dvd chapter index on great putts, drives, bloopers and so on. I know there was a great putts section but being able to navigate to that would be nice. Also, I'm not just speaking for myself but one week competing at Worlds is incredibly demanding and I think the top ten of at least the men's division should be covered a little more. I had to go pull up the scores on the website just to see who was in the top ten. There was a lot of us that literally had the camera in our face during some rounds and none of that footage seemed used. I would prefer that if there is no intent on featuring some players....keep the camera away. Does that make sense? I mean, let's face it, you hardly feature the lower rated players so why interfere with their game.
Just my $.02
