But hasn't finished in every worlds. Some of them, he signs up and plays a round/day or 2 and then leaves. I think one should have to finish these tournaments to have them fully count. Same concept as we don't get So Cal points if we don't finish the tournament.

You make it sound like they are putting out no water out on the courses and that's not very fair. The water is being drank as fast as they're putting it out. They are aware of the situation and are doing everything possible to keep fresh ice water out on all courses.

Since you can't reply on the results thread...
What is the highest possible score for the putting competition? Rico got 33 out of X possible points. Also, what does the competition entail, just increasing distances for a level putt?
3 points for first attempt, 2 points for 2nd attempt, -1 if you missed the comebacker.....
9 baskets - so best possible score = 45
stations were all around 10 meters, but 4 different types of baskets, around trees, thru alleys, on hilltop, uphill, downhill and over roll of hay in 20 mile an hour wind at times, depending on which time of day or which of the 2 days you did it...only 1 chance to go around, and no redo's or second day chances...
so some people had lots of wind and others had no wind...as all 9 baskets were on the hilltop area by tourny central
hope this helps people get a feel for the event

I really wish I could have been there to accept the award for TD's of the year.
But for all of the Tulsa Disc Sports Association I would like to thank the PDGA for giving us the opportunity to host the 2006 AM WORLDS.......I would like to thank all the players who came to this great state of OKLAHOMA, and all of you that voted for us.
But most of all I would like to thank all the hard working volunteers here in Tulsa and across the state that came together to help us put together one great event. From all the TD's here in Tulsa: Myself, Wayne Forrest, Dave Wise, Joe Rotan and many other key figures that made this happen we all thank you for your support.
It was really hard on me personally not being able to tour last year and play the big events that I have played in the past but getting this award is very special to me and all the other co TD's of the 2006 AM WORLDS!!!

Hole 1 is a short turnover deuce hole of which Nadine was the only one to capitalize on. All three women took a 3 on the elevated and beautiful downhill hole 2 which plays to a basket on terraced ball golf tees. Considering the wind and OB on this hole, all competitors taking a 3 is very strong play. The tee for hole 3 is right outside the pro shop window where scoring central is, and it's a short open downhill drive which plays to a basket tucked into heavy woods. There's a neat "peek-a-boo" through the woods that allows one a direct line of sight to the basket from the tee, but is not wide enough for a competitor to use. Tavish's drive cut left early into some deep rough and she could only pitch out and lay up for four.
Jeff_LaG
Aug 02 2007, 10:36 AM
Both hole 4 and hole 5 are long uphill holes. The former is more open until playing to a protected basket while the latter is tightly wooded the whole way. 3 is a good score on both of these.
Looks like Tavish was the only deuce on hole#6 which is surprising since it's a 265' relatively wide open slightly downhill righty hyzer.

Ground rolls a little, but not much of an elevation change until the green, which is on a slight rock formation.

Lots of scoring separation on the par 5 hole, possibly the signature hole at Blueberry Hill. The smart play is conservative shots to get down the 350 ft. tunnel, where it opens up as it crosses a ball golf green and then back into the woods where the basket rests up on large rocks. There's a world of trouble if you get off the fairway initially here.

Hole 10 is a 520 foot par 3 with an elevated tee but plays to a well protected pin. Additionally, approach shots to the long pin have to deal with an OB marsh before the polehole. Unfortunately, Manley found the OB.
Jeff_LaG
Aug 02 2007, 12:03 PM
Hole 12 is a gorgeous 590' par four and one of my favorites on the course. One throws a downhill drive of about 375 feet before a dogleg right, then makes an approach shot through one of three primary routes through trees to the pin. You feel great about a birdie 3 here.

Hole#13 is 385' uphill over three separate ponds, none of which are visible from the tee. One avoids the initial two ponds on the drive, then makes an approach which must carry the third pond to reach the long pin. Unfortunately Nadine and Tavish were both in the water on this hole.

Hole 15 is 265 feet down a wooded corridor that bends to the right. The fairway is fairly generous and this is a good deuce run; I'm surprised to see so many fours here.
Jeff_LaG
Aug 02 2007, 01:04 PM
Hole 17 plays sharply uphill to a basket perched above a large exposed granite face, which is OB. The typical play is to lay-up short of the OB and make an approach that is longer than it looks because of the elevation gain, and combined with the OB makes for quite a knee-knocker.

I'm assuming you've played it? I could only throw, on a golf shot, 420ish max maybe a smidge longer with that downhill, and it was a not-so-hard three every time. Drive. Roc upshot. Drop in. Three. It is a long par 3, more along the lines of one of those "Par 3.5"s that are kind of annoying, but it is definitely a par 3.

imo, a par 3 would mean the 'green' is reachable in 1 throw..........unless there is huge elevation I don't think too many people are going to putting for duece on a 615' hole....dunno, never seen the course but I'm guessing the hole is pretty much wide open??

If you define "the green" as the 10 meter putting circle, then I would argue that a par-3 means you can reach the green in 2. Which you can do on this hole.
Disc golf isn't ball golf. You only need one putt from the circle whereas in ball golf you need two putts from "the green".
Well, you should only need one putt from the circle. I usually need more. :o

Hole#9 is 615 feet but has a severe elevation drop, and big arms could choose to attack the polehole if they wish. An OB marsh area forces many to play conservatively and lay up short left and play the hole like a par four. The polehole is also situated on a mound with an OB road present behind. Mitch McClellan threw his drive OB and Jim Oates threw his upshot OB into the road, but canned the comebacker putt.

Imo, hole#12 is the signature hole on the Granite Ridge course and one my favorites on the entire complex. Throw a fun downhill drive of about 300 feet to set up an uphill approach of almost 300 feet through a wooded corridor. It's pro par four golf at its finest.

Doesn't matter as long as a decent percentage took 4s. On par 3 disc golf holes that are mostly open, there are usually only two scores that dominate, maybe 1/3 are 2s and 2/3 are 3s with few 4s. There's nothing wrong with par 3 open holes where 2/3 get 3s and 1/3 get 4s. The typical version is called an "easy par 3" and a few here at Worlds are "tough par 3s."

Hole 14 plays to a long pin position that is well to the right of the polehole shown at playdg.com. I don't like the right route - on the drive I'd much rather throw a high annie over the trees on the left or a bullet shot between the trees. Jim Oates apparently found the OB and took a 5.
Come on Coda win dat chit!!!

Aug 02 2007, 05:47 PM
Hole 16 plays about 450 feet downhill with an OB area in front of the polehole. I disagree with Robert Leonard's assertion that this is a par four - the green can be driven, although most will choose to lay up and make the very shortish pitch over the marsh for an up-and-down 3. Oates apparently found the OB on his drive.

Hole 17 is another I'd disagree with Robert Leonard on. It's about 460 ft. up hill, but after the drive it's a shortish approach to the polehole. It would be a very very easy par four if it was designated as such. Big arms might have a run at deuce on this hole.

Aug 02 2007, 06:03 PM
Hole 18 is 770 ft. and up up up hill - it's a slog to finish. As opposed to some of the other par 5s on the complex (e.g. hole#4 on the Bear, hole#8 on Blueberry, Highbridge Gold #3 and 6) the play on Granite Ridge#18 is less about placement and more about throwing as far as you can.

Hole 9 is defintely a par 4. Most people (even good pros) need two shots to get into the putting area (IMHO, that's within 100' or so). I can't imagine anyone making 2 on that hole, unless they throw it in from 100' +, and then it should be a well-deserved eagle.
And yes, I have played it.

par 2/3/4/5 whatever, its total throws that matters not your relation to the so-called course par. just curious, how many open players dueced hole 9?
Doesn't matter as long as a decent percentage took 4s. On par 3 disc golf holes that are mostly open, there are usually only two scores that dominate, maybe 1/3 are 2s and 2/3 are 3s with few 4s. There's nothing wrong with par 3 open holes where 2/3 get 3s and 1/3 get 4s. The typical version is called an "easy par 3" and a few here at Worlds are "tough par 3s."

All results from day 2 are up.

Congrats to all those folks that made the cut!

Brad's real first name IS Emory. Whenever we've had to write checks for him placing in the Wide Open, we have to make them out to "Emory Hammock". I don't know about "Emory Wilson Brad Hammock" being his full name, but it could be true.

He proceeded to birdie the next 14 holes in one of the greatest displays of golf i have ever had the pleasure to witness!! go get em Brad, doin it hammock style!

Does anyone in Highbridge, WI know Forrest Stille or has anyone seen him? I am here at IDGC and his relatives are looking for him. He and a group of friends were on their way to Pro Worlds as spectators, via the Minneapolis HWY 35 bridge that collapsed yesterday, and no one has been able to contact him! The family is unsure who he went. To my understanding the cell phone service there is not the strongest. Please pass on the word if you are reading this! If you have seen him, please have him call his family or if you have any information please contact me here at the IDGC.

Holy COW - she's not happy at all.
However... maybe it's the great equalizer? Des CLEARLY has a major advantage over 80-90% of the womens field because of her D - not to take anything away from the other parts of her game, just that she has so much more D than her competitors. Maybe this course levels the playing field and takes the driver out of her hand, in an effort to test the whole game, not just the 400 foot hyzer?
I agree with no trees in the middle of the fairway (it's called a FAIRway for a reason, not a SKETCHway, or SNEAKway, or LUCKway). And that tall basket in the trees... why? I don't mind a basket where height is a little outside the "normal" ranges, but why must you place it where angles to the basket are directly blocked by three tree trunks? Stupid design - you don't need parlor tricks and mickey mouse design to have a fair, challenging course.
Good luck Nicole Frazier, and also to Des. Hopefully they can finish in that order.

The lead Grandmasters card just played hole#2 on the Woodland Bear course. This hole has three options off the tee, of which the righty hyzer route seems to be the preferred play. Fairway placement is critical no matter what to earn a birdie three on this technical pro par four hole; this hole was the deciding factor in the World Mixed Doubles championships on Sunday. This morning, three out of the four top grandmasters got the birdie three - that's outstanding play!

Let me first preface this by saying I'm from Iowa. I love Des and her game. She's clearly been the best woman player in the world the past year or so. But ....
Not to bag on Des but that just sounds like sour grapes. The course is the same for all the players and getting upset at the course setup doesn't nothing but take your foucs away from playing. Plus if the course is too short then why isn't she under par? It is kind of like players complaining about the setup at a USGA event. You simply can't complain about the course, the weather or the baskets during the event, they are the same for all.

finally heard the Des rant on QT....That was AWESOME!!!! I'm not sure but I think she doesn't like that hanging basket in the trees on 17.
I agree on the putt-putt remark....does someone need to stand near the basket on 18 to grab their putter before it disappears down the pipe?
The girls are professionals they can handle the long tees. I would agree with Des on all but the trees in the fairways...Although, I'm not there to see how bad they are but trees in the fairway are OK as long as there are clear paths through them.....There needs to be FAIRways just not ways through the trees.

Regardless, her comments may be valid, but while in the tourney your energies should be focused on your performance, not about being upset at the course setup. It is the same course for all players. Some courses are longer and they'll favor the long throwers, some are shorter and they'll favor the better putters and more acurate drivers. Either way all you can do at this point is play the course taht is there in front of you. The time to express displeasure with the setup is before or after the event is completed. During th event your energies need to be focused on the event. Plus when you are getting beat and complain about the setup it just makes you look bad.

Great post!!!I agree as well
Thanks. I dabble in sports psychology. I could go on all day about how the brain and sports is so dependant. About how the subconscious and conscious work together and the power of mental thoughts over the physical world. Oh man the human brain is a cool thing.
Ever heard of an athlete saying they are in the zone? What does that really mean? Here is what some of the latest research suggest happens when you are in the zone. Your brain is made up of 2 parts, the conscious and the subconscious (obviously the brain has many parts but for the sake of this discussion well focus on these 2). The conscious is the part that controls what you physically do. The subconscious is like a super computer that processes information and controls things you arent thinking about. The subconscious also has a lot to do with muscle memory and how that is controlled. When an athlete is in the zone they are basically letting their conscious mind go and allowing the subconscious to control their movements. Basketball players will often say, I was just throwing it up and everything when in. Thats because they where not thinking about it, but rather just doing it. Theyve made all the shots a hundred times before; it is just allowing your subconscious to take over and control your body. I know this is true because when Im having a killer round and putting or driving exceptionally well, I just go, I dont think. It just happens.
Another interesting part of how these 2 parts of the brain work is on shots where there is a hazard, like water. Ever go up the tee where there is water on the left and say to yourself, Dont throw it in the water. Then you step up and throw it right into the water. The subconscious part of your brain doesnt understand do and do not. It only understands the water portion of that thought. So when you think to yourself, do not throw it in the water, your subconscious interprets that as throw in water. What you should be doing is thinking, Throw it on this line to the right. Focusing on what you should do and not on what you shouldnt do will yield much better results. Plus your subconscious understands mental pictures VERY well. That is why you want to visualize the shot several times beforehand, then let go and let your subconscious take over and make that shot.

He and Chris Hartman threw 48's that round, if they both played the same course. Granite Ridge or Blueberry I believe. Schedule (http://www.2007proworlds.com/images/PW2007_Sch_v3.pdf)

There is going to be mixed reviews on this. Other majors get away with gimmicky, putt-putt things.....like clowns mouths, lattic fences, and hay bale rings.
I'm in the group that would rather keep it more like "golf" and less like "putt putt golf and games".

What course and hole number is the hanging basket? I have seen a hole in the ground at Trophy Lakes in South Carolina, but a hanging basket at Worlds... come on....
Not to mention, a hole blocked on three sides by trees is stupid. Insert a picture of a hole in Lubbock, TX where a drive five feet deep means you are playing Plinko for birdie.
These guys are too good to have that stuff determine a World Championship.

That scenario means that good golfer will realize that it is far more important to land on the one open side to have a look, and they will try to make sure they do just that. Landing 5 feet too deep to leave no look is a bad shot there, not bad luck.

I don't know what the complaints about the white tees are about. Per the schedule literature, there is only one course where the ladies play the white tees, and that is Highbridge Gold. Per the literature, the white tees come in at 7945 feet, making HG Whites by far the longest course they play. Unless it's a 27 hole course or something. Is it?
Otherwise I don't see the problem. Blueberry Hill is listed as 6450 feet and Woodland Bear at 5505 feet. Almost 8000 feet for HGW isn't exactly pitch-n-putt.

obviously, but i feel that if you get yourselft inside the circle, you should have a FAIR putt. let's say you pure some sick drive 400 ft. through a beautifully defined fairway, then you get up there for a putt, and you have nothing.

I personally think that if you are playing in the Pro Women's division you should be playing the Pro or Gold tees on all of the courses. If you have a problem playing these tees then you should still be playing amateur. Shorter tees lead to a luckier round and luck really shouldn't be the majority factor on a World's course. Not even if it's just one course. The field should never be "evened out" by shorter tee pads. The best player should win. In one of the prev posts someone mentioned distance being a factor for the girls and that distance should be evened out because not every girl throws that far. I say boo hoo!! Work on your game!! None of us that throw 400 feet started there. We worked our butts off to be able to throw that far! Now the ones who have worked the hardest on their games are being threatened with the attitude that all things should be equal? Not Fair! It seems that the majority of the people that think that Professional Women should be playing from short tee pads are men. Little men. Men who would probably be beaten up by those same pro women if all the teepads were the same.

I love Des, I love her game, She could and probably will most likely still win.
I 100% understand about being unset at playing the whites and she's got a volid point there. The top women players shouldn't be playing the whites. But the comments about luck are disrepectfull to the women who shot well. She essentially was saying that they shot well because they where lucky, not because they are skilled. That is a discredit to Angie and those that shot well. And if the course was soo short and easy then you should have shot better. SOUR GRAPES.
But I love the fact that she is so passionate and competitive. That is great. And props to DGTV for being right there to get the interview. DGTV is the awesome.

As a male with a background in Ball golf long before getting into disc golf (and who is not very good), I will tell you that at major championships in ball golf, there are holes that challenge players on every level, whether it is their diving ability, accuracy, short game/approach game and putting.
That being said (and so I do not get lambasted by those that hate the comparisons between ball and disc), I believe that a world championship should be played in challenging conditions, but not in conditions that cater to one person's game necessarily. Just because Des thinks the course are too short, does that mean they really are? Just because there is a tree (or multiple trees) in a fairway, does that make the hole tricked up or does it result in players to have to think more about what shot to make? This sounds alot like the grousing that happens occasionally in ball golf U.S. Opens, when certain players are not playing well.
As a final note, I have all the respect for Des for what she has accomplished in this sport and the promotion of it.

Everyone has a less than average round from time to time. It's just not a good thing when one comes during World's, or any Major for that matter. She was interviewed while that bad taste was still in her mouth and for once she showed it. Her true champion colors will start to show again once she knocks down a few birdies and reels in the competition....although Angela is playing some KILLER golf!

I don't have "sour grapes" about anything except the fact that I cannot be there to comment on these issues in person. Thank you for being so observant as to whom you are replying to sir. (Des did not write this!! she would be more eloquent) I am not taking away anything from any of my girls that shot well! There are quite a few of them that could possibly win. And they are ALL my friends! The simple fact is that none of the top women should be satisfied with playing lesser teepads.

I have spent a good part of my disc golf career fighting for equality in this sport - equal tee pads, equal entry fees, equal %of payout by division - both as an Am Woman & now as a Pro Woman. It seems silly, that even in a Pro Worlds venue that the Pro women can not be given the same opportunities as our male counterparts. I find it somewhat disheartening that our opinion isn't more valued in our own division. I get it- if we want it all equal go to USDGC then it's a one division world. Part of the challenge of being a women golfer is comparing scores to the "Big Boys" that can't be done unless the playing field is level. I know all the women are playing the same courses & the same tees, but it is still quite a slap in the face to not be allowed to have the same level of competition as the men. I also know there are women that don't feel like this & I agree with Courtney - keep playing Ams until you are ready.
