I can't tell you since the TDs are the last to know for both Worlds. You have to contact the PDGA on any registration issues for getting in or getting out. I did talk to Breiner briefly and he figures we've got about 30 more that will have registered by tomorrow's deadline but still enough room for everyone. If you registered online and your credit card went thru, you're in. Otherwise, Breiner would ahve contacted you if any trouble on payment.
Hosfeld, Val, Avery and Dave just finished practicing their first course this afternoon. They'll practice tomorrow before heading to Japan and coming back Monday. Talk about jet lag!
Sorry for my ignorance but why are they going to Japan? Also , does this mean Crab has the Tioga to himself? :D

I know its on the schedule as such but is MPO still only playing HG, BH, and GR? Also it looks like some of the holes on HG have changed like hole 2. Anyway how many have changed and have any others on BH changed? I already knew about the gold tees on GR so don't worry about those.

Mostly new pins on Gold that hadn't been put in when Mid-Nats was here in 2005. Gold hole 8 is old 7 + 8 combined and we added the new hole 2 to get a hole back. Granite routing after 8 and several holes have changed in that lower area since 2005. Open doesn't play Woodland Bear.

For everyone heading to Pro Worlds from the Twin Cities, the best gas prices along the way will likely be in Minnesota. For those going via Duluth, gas has been 20-30 cents a gallon cheaper in Minnesota than Wisconsin lately so gas up before crossing into Wisconsin near Duluth.
If you take the alternate route of heading east into Wisconsin on Hwy 70 halfway to Duluth, the best gas price I found last weekend was at the casino in Hertel between Siren and Spooner on Hwy 70. It was $2.85 -$2.90 instead of $3.20-$3.30 anywhere else on the way in northern Wisconsin and even better than Minnesota. Of course, if you throw several quarters in the slots while you're gassing up, it may cost you more or less than expected... :D

The link to the Web cast can be found at: Our Webcast Homepage (http://www.audiosportsonline.net/PDGA/Broadcast.htm). Please tell your friends, as we have unlimited bandwidth.
Also, for those who don't make it to the Live Coverage, the show will be archived for all to check out later.

Dave indicated this afternoon that we likely won't see the final reg list posted until tomorrow. However, I talked with Breiner and it looks like we hit 320 registrations minus a few withdrawals. About 36 entered at the last minute with Cale squeaking in last at about 10:30 last night.
For Doubles, MPO and MPG now have waitlists but the other divisions are still available. Players can register for Doubles and field events at Highbridge until they start.

Jul 25 2007, 08:19 PM
It's my understanding that about 15 got turned away last year with the 300 cap. So we're about the same but with much better international attendance going back to 2001 when the World Games qualifiers was Worlds in MN for some countries. I'm thinking it must have been the articles in DGW and DGM that put us over 300...
The Worlds forecaster program I put together indicated we would only get 255 based on the percentages of PDGA members in different distance ranges that attended the last two Pro Worlds. It is what it is now and we'll do our best to put on a good show. Much of the good show is brought by the players themselves and I'm sure the Whitecap "Olympic Village" will be hopping.

I know nothing at this point other than 120 in Open at last update. Dave is trying to do the pools and groupings in Milwaukee but won't have the final file from Breiner until tonight to get started. If you notice the schedule, each pool can have up to 76 players so the cap for Open is 152 but I doubt we hit it. All four courses were designed to have a par 5/par 3 sequence so the par 3 could have a shadow group and keep good flow. Not sure if it will be needed but we're ready if that's the case.

My wife and I are planning to make a side trip at some point in the week over to the Copper Peak Ski Flying Hill in Ironwood, MI - only about 25 minutes from Whitecap. It's the world's largest ski jump at over 240 feet (26 stories) high. You ride a chair lift to the top of the hill and then take an elevator to the observation platform 18 stories up, then climb an optional 8 story stairway to the top of the jump. From there you can see 40+ miles in every direction and three states - Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota!

Jul 26 2007, 10:35 AM
Because we promised that divisions would play the three courses they will play in singles, the schedule requires some divisions to be on a certain course at the same time. So, MPO+MPG couldn't be more than 38 teams (shadow group). Because courses will not be fully loaded at times, we may do three 3-somes for MPG if the total pool that round is an odd number of teams anyway.

ck34
Jul 27 2007, 04:09 PM
As far as I know, Dave put the top 18 players in the A pool to start with and they will each end up in separate group when pairings are done. If any players below the top 18 requested to ride with another player, they got in the B pool. That's more spread out by ratings than it normally has been. From a practical standpoint, since all of the courses are at the same place and A & B pools play at the same time, Open players did not need to ask to ride with someone else. All that did was make it very likely they would be in the B pool.
ck34
Jul 27 2007, 04:14 PM
Well, maybe being in the same pool would help for rides on the second day since A & B play at different times on Gold. The general rule though is that your chances of getting in the A pool are better if you have both a high rating and no request for getting pooled with others.
abee1010
Jul 27 2007, 04:29 PM
Breaking down pools by ratings makes no sense. All you do is give an advantage to the players who already have the best chance of doing well. I commend the organizers for mixing up the pools if that is what was done...
ck34

I doubt it will ever be random again after the problem with mismatched weather and course conditions that likely affected the outcome for Worlds in Charlotte 1997. Since 2000 Open and Advanced A pools have been seeded.
Players will be in their same groups for both rounds on the first day this year regardless of score, just like the way ball golf does their first two rounds. So, the top dogs won't be in the same group until at least the third round.

its bs if its by rating do it by rating....if its random they have it all random... the way it is now is not fair............sjur just told me that he will appeal to the TD to have done fairly....picked one way random or ratings...he's at work i am his proxy... its a lot of money to pay to get played in the seedings.........whatever

Sorry, but the PDGA makes the call and I agree with it so no changes. It's been this way for 8 years now. So nothing earth shattering about the process used other than fewer top seeds are in the A pool than ever before with only 18 instead of 54 slotted automatically to A pool. Just because some are theoretically unlucky in the process doesn't mean it wasn't fair. I had nothing to do with the choices but support Dave's process.

I agree. One of these years we'll make it fair for all players in the A / B pooling. They shouldn't even be called A and B pool, because that denotes something better. Maybe we should change them to colors... Like the Brown pool and the Pink pool... like in Reservoir Dogs...
But seriously, The fairest way to have all players with an equal shot is to make the average rating of each pool the same. This is especially easy to do when we are all playing at the same facility. Like this year.

Hey everybody, this is Jeff LaGrassa and Larry Kruse, your Pro Worlds 2007 Co-Scoring Directors, with the first report of the event.
The 2007 PDGA Professional Worlds Mixed Doubles champions are Angela Tschigfrie and Robert Mcintee!
After a first round score of 53 on the Granite Ridge course, the team of Tim and Katy Schreder shot a blistering 54 on the Woodland Bear course in the afternoon to end up tied with Angela Tschiggfrie and Robert Mcintee, who had shot a 51 in the morning round and a 56 in the afternoon. The playoff was continued alternating on the Woodland Bear course starting on hole#1. Tim Schreder's drive was short left and Katy's putt missed the mark. Angela Tschiggfrie's drive was long, and Robert Mcintee's 20-foot putt was perfect but rattled all the way through the chains and out the back side.
On hole#2, there are three options off the tee on this tight pro par four. Katy Schreder attempted the left anhyzer route but griplocked into trees in the middle leaving only a pitchout to the fairway. Robert Mcintee's drive on the hyzer route was perfect leaving Angela and roughly 125 foot downhill approach which she nailed. Team Schreder played valiantly to save their 5, but with a 10-footer for the birdie 3, Angela Tschigfrie and Robert Mcintee were The 2007 PDGA Professional Worlds Mixed Doubles champions.
The Barsby - Hardy team, who had a smokin' 50 in the morning round on the Granite course, shot a 59 in the afternoon on The Bear to finish in a tie with Team Reading. Des and Jay had shot a 53 on the Granite and had a solid round going on the Woodland Bear until the 9th hole where the team took a 6 due to a few shanked initial shots and two rollaways while putting on the elevated basket. They did respond with a strong 22, which is 6 under par, on the back nine, and finished with a 56.

Congrats to Tschiggfrie and McIntee for winning the mixed doubles at the Worlds.
Also, hard to believe they didn't seed the Open Division pools by rating as in years past. I'm personally glad they didn't, but I am perplexed by it, especially with the pools playing at different times on Wednesday, since the main argument for seeding the pools in the past has been differing weather conditions.

Breaking down pools by ratings makes no sense. All you do is give an advantage to the players who already have the best chance of doing well. I commend the organizers for mixing up the pools if that is what was done...

Remember that tomorrow for round 3, the Masters will be playing on the Highbridge Gold course from the Gold tees while all of the Women and other mens divisions will be playing from the Highbridge Gold's White tees. The SSA from the gold tees is 67 and from the white tees, 65.

I doubt it will ever be random again after the problem with mismatched weather and course conditions that likely affected the outcome for Worlds in Charlotte 1997. Since 2000 Open and Advanced A pools have been seeded.
Pro Worlds, you are correct, until this year apparently. Actually, I think you might be talking about Cincinnati 1998 in stead of Charlotte 1997...I don't recall any real issues in Charlotte. But I've found my memory fails me from time to time anymore. :) Even then, I'm pretty sure the best player still won.
Am Worlds, incorrect. Advanced A Pool has NEVER been seeded (unless they did it in 2001 or 2002, they did not in 1999-2000, nor 2003-2007), and it shouldn't ever be. Ratings mean much, much less with amateurs, and this year should show that as much as any. Apparently a 936 rated player can win the top men's amateur division if he plays well.
Players will be in their same groups for both rounds on the first day this year regardless of score, just like the way ball golf does their first two rounds. So, the top dogs won't be in the same group until at least the third round.
Traditional golf only does this because they only play one round per day. Since conditions are often tougher in the afternoon (windier, and drier, harder, and faster greens), they make sure that if you play a morning round on Thursday, you play an afternoon round on Friday, and vice versa. Keeping you in the same group is the easiest way to assure that. Since disc golfers are playing in both the morning and afternoon with a shotgun start, there's really no reason to stay in the same group both rounds.

A pool played Winthrops Eagles Landing (Wide Open Huge holes)
B pool played Killian?? I think?? Wooded birdie fest..

Only 2 people from B Pool made the cut to A pool...
I think they were Larry Leonard & Brad Hammock.......

I was a B-pooler in Charlotte and weather was a factor...Day one we were at Kilbourne and I went -21 in perfect conditions then went to long Eagle's landing course and we had no chance to reach the long par 4's. The best that day was a -2 by Hammock and Larry Leonard, and there were some good players in our pool, The Mose, The Sweeds Eckstrom, and Svante Erikson.......The previous day out there the A-poolers were shooting -9,-7, and about a dozen other rounds in the 40's.
Since these course are at the same location it shouldn't be that much of a factor....possibly a 10 minutes for a rain cloud to cover the place?

I was in Charlotte that year also. I must have been an A-Pooler, because I know we started at Eagle's Landing, and played Kilborne the next day. I still sucked. Mikey Sayre was in my group the first round...I'm pretty sure he shot a 49 or something close to that. I could look it up tomorrow. :( I had forgotten about the weather issues...yes, the courses were about an hour apart.
Problems with weather could still occur this year, with one Open pool playing in the morning on Thursday, and the other playing in the afternoon. Might be tougher on the B-Poolers in the afternoon to make A-Pool after the shuffle if the wind picks up in the afternoon, or someone gets a pop-up shower.

Who came up with the formats? Best Shot last? It just ruins the competition factor the last round, cuz it's over. There is not much of a chance to make a move in best shot but in 666 there would at least been some pressure on the players in the worst shot section.
Go ahead and engrave the trophy with Anthon and Rico on it...CONGRATS CALI !!!!

Best Disc (Best Score)
In Best Disc (also known as Best Score), each player plays the hole as they would while playing singles; there are no shared lies. The team score is the best score on the hole by one of its players.
The player who is away will always throw first, with this exception: If both players are lying the same number of throws, the team may choose which player throws first.
A player must pick up once it is impossible for him to better the team's score. The team incurs a warning for the first violation, and a penalty throw for subsequent violations.
In case of injury or disqualification, one partner may play alone.
doesnt best disc sound a lot like best shot? and, i agree with K, 666 should be last.

chappyfade
Jul 31 2007, 11:24 AM
Nope, best shot is also known as scramble. Both players throw a drive, then they both throw their next shot from the same lie. In best disc, both players play their own disc all the way to the hole, and simply take the best score between them.

The formats were dictated by the course schedule which was dictated by the need to only have two courses tied up by the 120 playing doubles when 200 not playing doubles need to practice the other two courses. For simplicity of explanation, it was better to do 666 for all pools the same time and the same day as the player meeting where it could be explained. And, doing RAP on the longest courses a division played was better or very few holes would actually have much regular alternating occurring.

So Chuck let me get this straight, it was better jeopardizing the integrity of the formats just to keep from tying up the courses for practice? Isn't that a little unfair to the participants who paid to play doubles? Just to keep more courses open to the non paying practice rounds....I thought this was the World Championship of Doubles, It's listed as a Major, not a side pick-up friday night dubs like event.
I would think a Major would take precedence over the players just wanting to practice.
By the way........Practice? Are we talking about Practice?...... Practice?........ Practice?........ We aren't talking about a game, we are talking about Practice?....... Practice

I was a B-pooler in Charlotte and weather was a factor...
So again I ask....why weren't the rules followed since weather was such a factor? Per the rules, when the pools have such drastically different conditions you are supposed to cut each pool instead shuffling, and then go start the scoring over from scratch. The opponents say it isn't fair to not count the throws made prior to the cut/shuffle, but as evidenced here the differing weather conditions were already completely "not fair".

Well, Harold Duvall was the TD of record for that event, and relinquished TD status for the week to John David since Harold played in the event, and I think Mark Ellis was the Competition Director back then, and Brian Hoeniger was the administrator then (job later became known as Executive Director) so you'd have to ask them. They were all smart, experienced players and TDs even 10 years ago, so I'm sure they had a reason. I was a mere pawn in the game of life back then. I guess that hasn't changed much, either.

I've been to 12 Worlds and honestly the one I felt that the weather screwed me personally the most was Flagstaff.
We were the first group off the Snowbowl the 1st round and when we saw the weather rolling in, we were almost running through the round to get finished before we got the brunt of the storm. We played the last 4 holes in a very hard rain, and played 18 with hailstones ripping down on us. They postponed the round until later in the week. Everyone got to go back out there 4 days later and play in pristine conditions. It was at least 6-7 stroke's worth of a swing from that morning and 4 days later. That 6-7 strokes could have possibly got me in the top 5 instead of 11th.
BUT and thats a BIG BUTTTTTTT like yo mommas ;)......YOU CAN'T CONTROL MOTHER NATURE and it's just the breaks! Sometimes you will get a disadvantage and sometimes you will get to benefit from it...It's random luck. They shouldn't have any serious issues this year thank goodness.

K-Mac is 100% correct in that this MAJOR should have its own identity. Right before Worlds is not the time for it. Mixed Doubles already got demoted from a MAJOR to a XC-Tier
Not an excuse, but I had to play doubles this year taking my partner around blind through the courses and I'm not talking Ray Charles either. Folks can only take so many days off from the real life.
Let's chalk it up as live and learn and hope somebody can take the awesome Doubles MAJOR to its own place.

**** it feels weird watching instead of playing :( I would be happy to play through a blizzard instead of watching from the outside.
Flagstaff got me worse than it got you, at least you got to finish... ;) :( :)

Considering the courses, your WojLOCKS for the week...
Open Men Top 5:
1. Dave Feldberg
2. Steve Rico
3. Avery Jenkins
4. Ken Climo
5. Geoff Bennett
Those are your WojLOCKS for the week!
And if you think its odd my slipping Bennett into the top five. Its part a local thing and part the fact that I think that the courses play very kindly to his forehand game.

I'm VERY disappointed that northwoodsdiscgolf.com has gone down, it had the BEST available complex map for Highbridge, and some better course tours. The ones on playdg.com are nice, but don't give you an accurate representation of many of the holes, especially the longer ones. They need more than two photos on many of the holes, multiple zoom levels up the fairway.

Am Worlds had the round scores up fairly quickly after each round. I talked to Megan 2 hours ago and she was done with her round and had driven wherever it is you have to go to get cell reception.

As the guy who did the scores for Am Worlds, I can understand the difficulty of getting scores up quickly. Scores may be slow due to a few reasons.
1. Course differences. Milwaukee was fortunate that most of the courses were pretty close to finishing around the same time. They might be waiting for all first rounds to complete?
2. They are not blessed with the fortunate abundance of internet and cell phone access that Milwaukee has.
3. I am not there. ;) Just kidding LaGrassa.
I am eager to see them as much as the next person. Rumor has it that Terry Miller & Tom Jenkins (masters) shot hot and are close to the lead!

Point 1. I agree, the difference between playing Gold from the white tees and GR/BH is 30 minutes, if not more. The women were on Woodland Bear which I would imagine is the shortest of them all. Likely she was done with her round 45+ minutes before the old Senior GMs on Gold.
Point 2. Actually cell reception at the top of the hill, where the courses all meet up, is actually pretty good. I never had issues with Verizon from that location. Additionally, at the bottom of the hill by the camp grounds they've got wireless internet access, I should know, I put it all in and set it up :)

Aug 01 2007, 03:27 PM
They could post individual pools if they wished, if they finished in a timely manner...they don't have to wait on every pool to finish before posting an update. Since they don't have to call scores in anywhere (all the boards are scores will be uploaded either at the house or the pro shop on top of the hill I imagine), it should actually go FASTER. They MAY be having internet issues....internet and cell phone coverage is spotty at best up there in the Cheesehead Outback.
Chap
P.S. Woj, we had trouble accessing the wireless last year from anywhere in the complex (including close to the house), but that may be something you set up or corrected this year...I'm not sure. And we KCers are mostly on Sprint, and I was lucky to even get one bar even on top of the hill last year.

I'm just anxious because I want to see where Megan's 79 sits in the FPO field, and I'm always looking to give Chuck a hard time. :D
It's far more important to service the players that are there and keep the event flowing than it is to update the on-line scores for us knuckle-heads that didn't make the trek....but that doesn't stop me from wanting to see those scores right now!:D:cool:

John - the wireless node was the Pro Shop at down at the 9 hole course by the camp grounds, not the house or anywhere at the top of the hill. That may have been one issue. The second issue is that the connection only reached the closest camp sites, as a result of the router/signal originating within a tin building.
But if you were within 1/4 mile of that Pro Shop down there, you could definitely get a wireless signal, although I think we DID have it password protected. Dunno why you'd need that out in the boonies, but we did it. :P
