"The simple fact is that none of the top women should be satisfied with playing lesser teepads."
Then dont play! Its not like all those women were not aware of where and what course and tee pads they were going to be playing. Referencing the PDF file created by Chuck, Version 3 released on 07-26-07; here was their heads up. If you dont like it, then dont play! If your a true Pro (IMHO) none of this should even be being discussed. If you can throw 400' then certainly you should be able to throw 250-300' with little to no problem.
Just because you throw past the basket and leave yourself no path to the basket for your duece is no reason to blame the course designer or the person who decided to, for lack of a better term, FORCE the women to play from the whites.
Like I wrote earlier, its not like Des didnt have the chance to see the course and the tee pads prior to the beginning of the competition. Suck it up and move on like a true champion!

Even though it was stated before the competition started that these tee pads were going to be used doesn't mean that the Women have to like it. And to participate in the World's we are somewhat 'forced' (as you put it) to play whatever teepads are chosen for us. We are allowed to state out opinions! I am not even playing in the Championships this year because I'm currently 'cookin' the future disc golf world champion in my belly. I do know that the majority of women that play pro would like to play the pro tee pads. If we do not let our opinions be heard we will never be satisfied with the way the women's division is handled. I get from your post that you think someone should not participate because they are not 100% happy with the way things are handled. This is ridiculous! We still love our sport, love playing, love the competition, love the comrades, but when we as women speak up we are criticized by men like you.
So Ward, would you rather I just shut my mouth and have no opinion like a nice little June Cleaver?

Hi Courtney,
I'm trying to figure out what I'm missing here. Highbridge Gold from the whites is 7945 feet, which is 441 feet average per hole. Is it a 27 holer or something?
Help me understand. I think it sounds like a good long course, not an abomination where a decent course was turned into a bunch of dumb 200 footers.

My only complaint about your whole argument is that earlier you stated that shorter teepads = luck. The only course where the women play shorter teepads is Highbridge Gold (Whites). Those teepads are still long. You need a strong arm to play them, and it definitely rewards the players with longer arms. Des should have torn the field a new [censored] on that field.
Instead she carded a 68.
In two rounds at US Mid Nationals last year, on the same layouts, in a lot of wind, the White division (all sub 925 players) saw 8/11 and 7/11 players card better scores. The fact is that she played badly and now she's complaining.
My question is this: Had Des rocked the field, using her strong arm to (pardon the pun) strong-arm the field, would she still be rocking the boat? Would this issue had ever come to light? I HIGHLY doubt it. I've noticed that all Pro players tend to only bring issues like this to the forefront when they're losing. When they're winning, men and women both, all just shut their traps and let things like this slide.
So do I agree with your argument that the women should be playing the Gold Tees? Yes, I do. I agree. The women are the best in the world and should be playing the best tees in the world.
What we're ignoring here is the fact that issues like this only come to light when someone plays badly and gets sour grapes.

18 holes. You're right about this. She's right when she says the women should be playing the same tees as men, wrong when she says shorter tees = more luck factor. At least in the case of THIS course.

Woodland Bear they played longer tees. It is a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT course from the men, I believe the women don't play Granite Ridge in favor of the Bear... both courses are unique challenges, no necessarily shorter versus longer. It likely had to do more with scheduling issues with putting them all on identical courses than anything there.

I don't know about the Bear aspect of the course, as it is a recent addition to the complex. But the Woodland aspect of the course (normally Woodland Greens is one course, and Bear is another, since Bear is not complete they combined bits of the two to make a course more challenging than Woodland Greens) is definitely not like this. The paths are narrow, but well defined. Is there an occasional tree splitting the fairway? Yes. But nothing unfair. They are definite fairways. She had a day where she was inaccurate, and so she's complaining about the courses. You know what? I had two rounds on that course at last year's MidNats that cost me a win, I played well enough to win on the other courses, easy.
Was it the course's fault? No. I was inaccurate and lost my cool.
Sounds like the same thing Des is dealing with right now. Woodland is a TOTAL change of pace from the rest of the complex, and it affects the way you play sometimes.

I have to agree with you. I'm sure if she was leading, there would be no problems at all! She also played Flagstaff which had more trees on every single course that I've ever seen. She played well there and hm, no complaints about trees in fairways back in 2003..... So I think you're right.

Round ratings are definitely going to be suspect for the FPG, FPS, MPL folks. I don't have time to explain, but they had to get logged under the Highbridge Gold-White tees setup which is why I think that they might be messed up.

I agree fully, I was just saying that its a **** shame it only comes up when someone is feeling salty from a bad round. Had Des been winning I highly doubt she'd be putting forth these statements. This isn't an issue unless someone brings it up, and nobody brings it up unless he/she is playing badly. Its the way it is in both mens and womens. Nothing comes to the surface unless you're doing badly.

Wow. First of all I am sooooo glad that Des spoke her mind. What she said in her interview included words she said before the tournament started, words echoed by more than one FPO player and have continued to be said throughout the rounds.
Woodland Bear includes short tight holes with MANY trees in the fairways. There is always an element of "luck" in our sport (as other sports)...we have all benefited from a "good kick" and suffered through "bad kicks". I defy anyone to say they have not uttered these words during a round. The basket in the tree on hole 17 is tilted and is just plain silly.
Highbridge White. Where do I begin? Let's just say that I have not heard nor can I think of any good reason for the Women to play from the short tees. Let us go out there and take that challange. I understand that there was a tremendous effort form volunteers to get those shorter pads in and that is phenomenal. I don't think it is necessary for women to play from them in the Open Division.
I have never met a course that I "hate". I have fun out there first and foremost. I am sitting at the bottom level of the competition and see Des' views. Des was venting after a tough round that is true but she was also speaking out for what she belives in and what other Women have said has been similar. Maybe another player would have said it differently but the sentiment has been the same for many Women.
Liking the courses and the courses being of World Championship Quality does not have to be same thing. I have read every single response on this board. Everyone has valid points. Those who shot well wether due to luck or skill and/or both that is awesome...I would never want to take those great acehivements away from them. Understand that nothing is perfect and everyone is entitled to thier opinion.
That being said, I am having a great time on and off the course despite having some dissapointing rounds. A great part about our sport is the culture that has formed and the friendships renewed, strengthened and begun. Sorry to get a little sappy but that's just me expressing my opinion.

The pro women's Worlds field has lower ratings and a lower skill set than the advanced men's Worlds field. The advanced men just played a short tee Worlds. To quote Terry Miller, if she wants long tees, she can move up.
I think it is about as low as you can go in sportsmanship when you say you lost because the course sucked instead of saying you lost because your opponent played better than you did. Everyone is playing the same courses. It seems to me that Angela often does well on courses that demand accuracy more than distance. Elaine, too.
There are two courses I play a tournament or two on each year that have elevated baskets. I love it when my opponents keep trying to hit the long range putt and keep blowing past and through and right back at them. Discs do a lot of funny things hitting the chains from that angle. I always lay up, drop in, and save a throw or two on half the field. Doh.

Although I question the fact that she only brought it up when she was doing badly... Only raised a fuss when doing badly... I do agree with her over you here Bruce.
Like she said in her interview: she is not a white level player. She should not be playing the white tees. White level is 875-924. When you've got 10 of the 13 blue level women in the world playing in a tournament, they should be playing the toughest tees available.

Does anyone know if these folks ever arrived?
Does anyone in Highbridge, WI know Forrest Stille or has anyone seen him? I am here at IDGC and his relatives are looking for him. He and a group of friends were on their way to Pro Worlds as spectators, via the Minneapolis HWY 35 bridge that collapsed yesterday, and no one has been able to contact him! The family is unsure who he went. To my understanding the cell phone service there is not the strongest. Please pass on the word if you are reading this! If you have seen him, please have him call his family or if you have any information please contact me here at the IDGC.

Thank you in advance

We have signs up at hilltop instructing Forrest Stille to contact event staff as soon as possible.

Jeff,
I have a question, and I can't find the answer, but it may have been posted earlier among the hundreds of posts. I'm wondering why the Male Open scores don't show round 4, and why the Open Women scores don't show rounds 1, 5, 6.
The big question is, especially for the Open Women, do the round numbers correspond to the course on their schedule? e.g.- is R2 for WB?
I'm trying to make sense of the scoring in relation to the courses that are played, so I'd appreciate your help.
Lowe
P.S.- You're doing an excellent job!!

Lowe,
Chuck wanted us to try a little different technique of scoring and presenting results.
Basically, when you look at Round 1 scores, anyone with a Round 1 score will reflect their Granite Ridge scores. Anyone with an entry for Round 2 will reflect their Blueberry Hill round, Round 3 reflects either a Highbridge Gold, Highbridge Gold - White tees, or Chestnut Gold scores.
Remember that each division will NOT play one of the 4 courses...so some columns will always remain empty for particular division.

The scores are in columns based on the course not on the round sequence so that ratings can be correct and over/under par values can give a better idea for A&B pool ranks when they have played a different number of rounds at that point. The order is:
R1=GR
R2=BH
R3=HG
R4=WB
R5=GR
R6=BH
R7=HG
R8=WB
Open doesn't play Woodland Bear so no scores will show up for them in the R4 & R8 columns for example.

Hole 10 is a long uphill hole. The right side of the fairway borders the paved road which is OB. There are a few trees in the middle of the fairway along the way, but this basket is on the very top of a mound with the basket being a little closer to the road side. Hyzers falling in short can get nasty rolls down toward the OB roadway but the long grass often keeps them just in-bound.

Top half of Women field is half blue and half white level. Call it pale blue. They are being treated equal to and possibly better than the Open Men in terms of course challenge. Open Men are playing a gold course and two blue courses below their skill level which is better than they sometimes get at most worlds with blue and sometimes lower level courses. Women are playing 7 gold holes above their level, 11 white a hair below their average level, a blue course slightly above their average level and a "pale blue" course at their level. The women solidly demonstrated their ability at the pale blue level on the pale blue Highbridge Gold course from the white tees.
The top four women will play the same layout in the Final 9 that the Open Men play even though I suspect some holes might produce the same scores for all four women and not affect the outcome.

The scores are in columns based on the course not on the round sequence so that ratings can be correct and over/under par values can give a better idea for A&B pool ranks when they have played a different number of rounds at that point.
Open doesn't play Woodland Bear so no scores will show up for them in the R4 & R8 columns for example.
So PDGA Tournament Results page doesn't show the correct current totals, right? The Open Men are missing 1 round and Open Women missing 2 rounds. I presume it will stay that way now, and potentially always. Is that right?
Man, it sure is complex to present Worlds' scores. I feel for you guys doing it, and I sure appreciate the time you're sacrificing to work on it!! It seems that if a person want to know the accurate up to date scores they would have to track it themself. Is there a separate Worlds leader board with up to date scores for the rounds played anywhere? Without it the PDGA Results page is not worth much.

There still seem to be some problems with the Women's scoring:
1) The top says Round 6, but the schedule says this Round 9 for them.
2) Why is Angela's total score only 185 after 8 rounds? After 3 holes it shows as only 185, which looks like only 3+ rounds. Shouldn't be over 420?

I think that's only because the "Start Total" numbers were wrong. I bet that there's no problem with the formulas.
The Women's "Current To Par " is correct and the place to look to see how they're doing. Don't look at the order in the Women's list or the "Current Total" column.
Fossil

Looking at the start Total and the start To Par. If a 185 total = 13 under then a 186 total can't = 2 under.

Des 186 total = 2 under and Burls 187 = 5 under. One throw total difference can't mean a difference in 3 To Par.

an exert from my blog about today...
Unfortantly, I didn't get enough warm up in. I'm all about volunteering and know that there is no way anything like this could be pulled off without the aid of many volunteers. However, when a round starts at 8, the leaderboard and scorecard should be out before 7, not at 7:15. A C tier would have had the scorecards ready by 6:45, and I'm playing a major and had to wait to warm up.
This really upset me as I had to then shorten my normal routine by 20 minutes. I am not using this as an excuse as I actually threw the first holes really well, but it is a mental thing.
