PDGA Disc Golf World Championships

About the World Championships

The Professional Disc Golf Association, founded in 1976, held the first PDGA Professional Disc Golf World Championships in Los Angeles in 1982. The title of World Champion is still the most coveted in the sport today, with hundreds of the best male and female competitors on the planet attempting to add their name to the list of PDGA Professional Disc Golf World Champions each and every year.

Several years after the inaugural world championships, the sport had grown to the point where the amateur players heavily outnumbered the professionals, and thus a new championship was created in 1989, the PDGA Amateur Disc Golf World Championships. The first Junior divisions were later added to the Amateur World Championships in 1997, and by the mid-2000s Junior divisions had been added for both boys and girls ranging from 10 & Under to 19 & Under. Because of this growth in young players, the event name was changed to the PDGA Amateur & Junior Disc Golf World Championships.

As the sport continued to grow at record-breaking rates, the need to split the world championships up came yet again. As of the 2018 season, there are four separate world championship events: the PDGA Professional Disc Golf World Championships (Open and Open Women divisions only), the Professional Masters Disc Golf World Championships (all professional divisions except for Open and Open Women), the PDGA Amateur Disc Golf World Championships (all amateur divisions except for juniors), and the PDGA Junior Disc Golf World Championships (all junior divisions).
