2015 Pro Worlds

2015 Pro Worlds

Story by Zach Parcell, owner and editor of AllThingsDiscGolf.com.

With thousands on hand to watch disc golf’s best, 11 people were crowned Disc Golf World Champions in the Pittsburgh area on Saturday. The day began with the 18 hole semifinals before the top cards advanced to the Final 9 at Slippery Rock University.

While most people were talking about Paul McBeth’s second straight course record breaking round as the last cards were being turned in at Moraine Lakeview DGC this morning, a handful of people were talking about something much more serious. Word was spreading that the current Open Women’s division leader and 2012 PDGA Pro World’s Champion, Sarah Hokom #34563, had been in a car accident.

We think back to last year’s exciting PDGA World Championships and how exciting the final few rounds were before the most memorable playoff. The way this year’s tournament is playing out, we wouldn’t be surprised if we see equally as large fireworks in Pittsburgh this weekend for the 2015 Pro Worlds.

With two full rounds remaining before the finals, the leaderboard continues to see many changes after a wild day on Thursday.

Two new names sit atop the leaderboards of the 2015 Pro Worlds, but new to being in the lead they certainly are not. Sarah Hokom #34563, having won the PDGA Professional World Championships in 2012 in Charlotte, NC, knows exactly how to manage the stress of and compete with the pressure of a world title hanging over her head. Will Schusterick #29064 has yet to add the title of “World Champion” to his résumé, but as a 3X US Disc Golf Champion,

Day one of the 2015 Pro Worlds is in the books and with a tournament this long we can officially draw absolutely no conclusions as to what is going to happen in the days to come. There is simply too much golf left to even begin to make any long-term predictions. Only two of the 13 pools that make up the 400+ competitors here in Pittsburgh played more than one round today. To say this is only the beginning, is truly an understatement.

The 2015 Pro Worlds players meeting went off without a hitch on Monday night at the amazing and beautiful Senator John Heinz History Center. 400+ competitors from 10 different countries and 46 different states and provinces filled the center and happily toured its newest exhibit, "The Evolution of the Flying Disc", before the meeting began. Even the Mayor of Pittsburgh, Bill Peduto (pictured above), couldn't resist stopping in to welcome everyone and wish them all good luck! A lot of great things happened today and we only expect more of that to come with competition beginning on Tuesday morning.

The 2015 PDGA Professional Disc Golf World Championships are now less than 24 hours away and you can feel the excitement building up with each passing minute. The weekend flew by, bringing an end to the Pro Worlds Mixed Doubles Competition on Saturday and the Pro Worlds Field Events on Sunday. Before we get swamped with the chaos that is the 2015 Pro Worlds tournament itself, we have some new World Champions to congratulate!
