Gregg Barsby & Val Jenkins win the Steady Ed Memorial Masters Cup

One of the most exciting final rounds in the history of the National Tour took place on Sunday as Gregg Barsby and Nate Doss battled for the win at the Steady Ed Memorial Masters Cup. Going into the day, Barsby and Doss were tied for the lead with 28 holes to play. On hole 4, Barsby throws a roller on the blind, undulating blind hole which is one of the toughest pars on the course., and the disc winds it way all the way to the basket where it hits a small earthen swale and ramps right into the chains for an unheard of hole in one and instant two stroke lead. Doss was not be deterred on his birthday as he hits a hole in one of his own later in the round on hole 21 to tie Barsby with seven holes to play. But it was not to be for the local favorite from the Santa Cruz area as Greg Barsby flips on the afterburners and picks up six throws on Nate Doss on the final seven holes to cruise to the Masters Cup victory with an amazing -11 on the day. Steve Rico matched Barsby’s 73 (-11) to make a big jump into third place just one throw ahead of Ken Climo in fourth.

In the Women’s Division, Val Jenkins entered the round with a four stroke lead over Des Reading and quickly increased her lead to nine in the early part of the day. But Val hit a rough stretch on the course and Des pulled back to within four strokes and looked to be gaining momentum. Once again Val showed why she is the reigning world champion and hottest woman player on the tour today by regaining her composure and matching Des’s round of 92 (+8) to finish the event with a four throw lead. Local favorite Carrie “Burl” Berlogar finished in third with Kathy Manley taking fourth.

In the age protected divisions, Patrick Brown took the victory in the Masters division with a two throw win over the always tough to beat Jim Oates. Santa Cruz’s own Marty Hapner battled hard all day with Snapper Pierson and prevailed with a slim one throw win to grab his first National Tour victory in the Grandmasters division. Hapner looks to be playing some of the best golf of his life and his win was much appreciated by the locals. Bruce Sisson outlasted Dr. Rick Voakes by two throws to win the Senior Grandmaster.

Trophy

At the awards ceremony hall of famer, Michael Travers was presented with the Ed Headrick memorial trophy for contributions to the sport of disc golf and his acceptance speech was an inspiration to all.

Due to the history and beginnings of disc golf in the local community, the Masters Cup has a very unique feel to it compared to all other NT events. The feeling of belonging to a big disc family is none more evident than here where the sport had its humble beginnings. Dave Thomas and his staff did an outstanding job in hosting the PDGA tour and along with presenting sponsor DGA, should be proud of not just hosting another successful event, but by bringing the family together every year for this annual reunion.
