Eagle Ridge Showdown

Tuesday, November 9, 2010 - 13:02

On a beautiful Saturday morning, Fox Valley Metro Disc Golf Club and Discontinuum Disc Golf Club met at Eagle Ridge disc golf course for a friendly head-to-head club matchup.

With each team’s captain creating 14 stroke play singles matchups worth one point each, the two clubs were set to face off against one another. Having eight players rated over 950, Discontinuum had a distinct advantage over Fox Valley with only one player having a rating higher than 940. Playing the short tees at their home course, Fox Valley used the home field turf to their advantage by winning seven matchups and tying two for an 8 to 6 lead going into the second round of best shot doubles from the long tees.

Plenty of great golf was to be seen during the first round, including a blistering round of 43 from Aaron Scott (PDGA #28438) of Fox Valley and a matchup between Brett Comincioli (PDGA #19325) of Discontinuum and Kyle Chapman (PDGA #43716) of Fox Valley. Kyle aced his last hole of the round to seal the victory and win by two strokes.

In between rounds, a free lunch was served up by Fox Valley’s president and first lady, Blaine (PDGA #37349) and Christie Schepp. While everyone enjoyed the hot dogs and refreshments, the captains wee hard at work creating the doubles matchups for the second round.

With stomachs full and the sun still shining, players went out for the second round. As the cards started to come in, the scores showed how tight of a race this was going to be. With only one card still on the course, Discontinuum had managed to keep pace by winning three of the first six matchups. Still down by two points, they needed a win from Chris Jordan (PDGA #29506) and Andy R. to tie things up and force a playoff. They came in with the win and tied the match up.

After a brief meeting, two players from each team were chosen to go into a sudden death best shot playoff. Playing for Discontinnum were Todd Fanning (PDGA # 24707) and Doug Buettgen (PDGA # 39332). Representing Fox Valley were Aaron Scott and Kyle Chapman. Hitting an obscured putt for a birdie from the edge of the green, Doug pulled out the win on the first hole.

Fellow player Tom McManus of Discontinuum had this to say of the event. “This was a very fun event. The sudden death playoff round was very exciting, it was fun because everyone watching had a stake in the results. Todd made a very solid drive and Doug hit a big putt to take the win.”

Thanks to all the Discontinuum members who made the hike to Oswego. It is not a short drive. It wasn't for a trophy or for plastic, but it was to go out and represent the club, represent disc golf and go out and have a great time.”

After getting home, my eight year-old son put the day’s events into perfect perspective. He told me, “Dad, since you are a member of both clubs, you won no matter what.” When clubs come together to enjoy the game with some friendly competition and hospitality, everyone is a winner.
