KC Journal Day 3:
We drove 2&1/2 hours down this morning to the Precious Moments Complex in Carthedge, MO.
For those that don't know Precious Moments are collectible figurines which are all hand painted and are cheaper than Hummels(but not by much on some pieces) and have the same secondary and retired pieces market as most collectibles.
After having lunch and spending more at the museum and gift shop than Matt Hall's expected return on investment if he finishes in the top 25 :), we drove back to the Westin Crown Center(host hotel) complex and looked around in the stores there, before heading upstairs to mingle and then heading inside the banquet room for the players meeting.
Everyone else I knew in Disc Golf that I had not seen yet, I saw in the 2 hours before or 1&1/2 hours during and after the players meeting, as well as most of the ones I had seen in the first 2 days. - But the ONLY PERSON I saw tonight who mattered more than anyone else I have seen here - was Tim Selinske.
I was so glad to see him and I told him how much it meant to see him there while giving him a giant emotional bearhug. I sincerely hope that whoever is helping him around this week will PLEASE keep him safe and NOT let him overdo it here in KC. We ALL need him around for many more years to come!
We then drove back to our hotel 15 miles away in a massive monsoon downpour with lightning strikes that lit the sky for 3-7 seconds each strike. When we got to our hotel it had not rained one drop. Turning on the local 10 PM Fox weather we saw why - monster cells were all over the area but were hit and miss because they weren't totally connected as they usually are in most storm fronts.
Hopefully Rosedale Down under was spared for Lorelei's sake, as I can't imagine what that course looks like after a monsoon rain storm.
In 8 &1/2 hours Lorelei and I will be taking our first throws of the 2009 Worlds with both of us starting on hole 18 on our respective courses on opposite ends of the city. I will look north before my first throw and wish her luck and good health and hope she has a great day.
I hope you all are enjoying reading this as much as I enjoy writing it, so at least for those of you not here you can follow a couple of players - father (Pro Master) and daughter (Under 13 Junior) as they compete and have fun in Kansas City during the week of Worlds!
See you tomorrow night,
Keith

Jul 28 2009, 03:43 PM
it's been an issue before- specifically in charlotte. they had a wide open boomer course that some of the top dogs got to play under good conditions, some under crappy conditions. that is what led to the (misguided imo) seeding of pools at worlds for a while.

KC Journal Day 4:
Weather played a huge factor in my day from start to finish and after 7 holes I was bleeding from a thorn into my nose from where after slipping on the muddy fly pads which caused my shot to cross the casual creek. Unfortunately, I did not navigate the slick granite rocks in the creek which caused a fall head first into the thorn bush and it also dumped all my discs and accessories in the creek and injured my back which kept me from being able to fully twist making it impossible to throw straight or turnover shots. after being even through the first 6 holes I only recorded 2 3's on the 12 remaining holes(both long hyzer holes).
Luckily there was a massage person at Rosedale who worked my back into feeling good enough to twist again while we waited until 4 pm to tee off due to the weather slowing down the Adv Grandmasters.
Started the round on hole 14 with a boring 3 and then the day got worse on 15 which had a spotter who unfortunately was spotting the wide open fairway instead of the 50-70 foot sloping drop off 21 feet from the basket to the right - My putter was 10 feet to the right of the basket and about 5 feet past which "should" have left me around a 20 footer for 3, so I thought. But apparently after hitting the ground it rolled down the slope and after looking around in the vicinty where the spotter in the middle of the fairway "thought" he saw it go, I was sliding down the hill trying to get back up to the top to rethrow from my previous lie. I was also now putterless on the second hole of the round as well as having to take a 6 for being 20 feet from the basket on a 150 foot upshot.
After the round I went back and looked for 15 minutes before finding it wedged until a dead log with about 2 inches of disc visible. I found the discs after sliding down the hill again from the top in the mud and spraining/dislocating and or breaking my right wrist when I hit the ground and when I finally stopped I was 3 feet from my disc.
I'm officially not having fun now. :)
Lorelei's day went better although her scores don't reflect it. She and the juniors played Rosedale Down Under Course in the rain and mud which caked up on their shoes making them like concrete bricks on their feet, (Controversy Alert) unlike the ADV Grandmasters who decided as a group after playing the Rosedale Top course, that they didn't want to play Down Under in the mud even though the Juniors played in it.
I think I'll ask if I can replay the second round with a putter this time, as it seems the players can choose if they want to play or not.
I also need to find out why I was 5 points from winning putting and tied for second and instead there is no Masters division breakdown even though there was 15 Masters signed up.
No one and NO WHERE did it say there would be no Masters division in putting.
OK my rant is over for today - if the swelling in my hand goes down and I can move it I'll be playing at 11 AM at Blue Valley.
More tomorrow night after the Fly Mart,
Keith

Blue Valley was played on tee times by ALL Open players and thier scores from that round is what will put them in the A or B pool until the shuffle.
Pro Masters have tee times tomorrow based off of the scores from today 2 rounds - both Masters pools played the same 2 courses in inverse order.
Depending on when the rain stopped over there and how well of a rain player they were, probably skewed the pools somewhat. It stopped raining around 4:30 at Rosedale which is about 15-20 miles away from Blue Valley. Later tee times might have had little to no rain for most of their round.

I for one am very glad that the Am Grandmasters did not play Rosedale Down Under after several hours of solid rain yesterday afternoon. Holes 1 and 2 on the upper course were muddy and treacherous on the slopes near the baskets. I can only imagine what Down Under would have been like for the "old folks".
The highlight of my day was watching Phil Arthur shoot a spectacular 48 at Rosedale. He was hitting putts from everywhere and crushing drives for deuce opportunities while the rest of us were laying up from 80-100 feet. He had two birdie putts dance through the chains or it could easily have been a 46! Can't wait to watch him crush at Blue Valley today.
Our card was the epitome of "the spirit of the game" yesterday. Lots of laughs and positive vibes. Many thanks to Toad, MitchMac and Phil for an extremely enjoyable round of golf.
Cheers, DD

Sorry to hear all your bad luck Keith( it made me smile),discs in the water, thorn in your nose? How do you do that?

Jeff, has your unofficial evaluation of these courses changed at all in the past week??
I
Top Tier (must-play courses):
Thornfield - Private course with several pro par fours.
Cliff Drive (Kessler Park) - Nice mix of open & woods. New concrete tees were just poured last month. Often windy.
Blue Valley - World class par 66 challenge; many pro par four holes which play over sick elevation changes and against often insane winds. Front nine is more technical than the back nine which is almost completely open.
Water Works - Plays through scattered old growth trees and some lofty elevation changes. Nice views of downtown. Only drawback is that all holes are par 3s.
Next Tier (very good courses):
Swope - Nice course with tree lined fairways over gentle elevation changes.
Rosedale Top: Open, windy course next to steep drop-offs into woods.
Wyandotte County Park (WyCo): Long open "prairie" course.
Prairie Center Park: Shorter open "prairie" course.
Middle Tier (good courses):
Pleasant Hill (Lake Shore Disc Golf Course): Plays along the shores of the lake with nice views of the water. Mostly open, flat par 54 course. Really the only course at Worlds with water hazards.
Shawnee Mission: Par 54 course, mix of open and woods.
Legacy Park: Nice mix of open and wooded holes.
Bottom Tier:
Rosedale Down Under: Pitch-n-putt through extremely tight, hilly woods. 17 of 18 holes less than 300 feet.
I'm sure locals who have played these courses will weigh in on the accuracy of the above info. :D

Valarie takes the lead!Valerie and Des are so closely matched, this could go down to the last hole.
It's fun to see three of the ten highest rated amateurs bagging it in junior boys, while their female counterparts are first, third and third[tied] in Advanced Women. It has been that way for a few years now. The top boys go for easy wins in juniors and the top girls show a little mettle.

[QUOTE=brock;1387704]what can you tell me about phil arthur? putting machine?
I have played the last two rounds with Phil, and he is shooting some incredible, Open caliber golf. He can throw controlled right handed drives ~ 500' and can also drive left-handed for probably 400+. His recovery game has been excellent, and I have not seen him miss more than a couple of putts inside of 30'. Yesterday he made several putts in the 40-50 foot range and took us to school at Rosedale. He has super power, great control, is a solid putter, and has a great attitude. The complete package. If he continues to shoot like this he should run away with the title this year in Masters. Watching him play, all I can say is...Grandmasters, here I come! (I turn 50 next April).

keith thanks for the updates and hope your wrist gets to feeling better.
Thanks Mr Ware! Wrist/thumb area was badly sprained, swollen and brusied.
KC Journal Day 5:
Just to clarify a few things, It wasn't that I was miffed that the "old guys" didn't play Down Under - They shouldn't have as it was dangerous with the conditions, but I was upset that the players got to make that decision. I said in the morning that nobody should have to play it with those conditions, because even when dry as a bone as it was on the weekend, it is a dangerous course in places. But the juniors - all 77 of them the first round - had to play it and yes they are younger, but younger doesn't keep them from falling down as 1 girl did 6 times. Lorelei and others on her card fell a couple of times also - it was DANGEROUS for everyone and should not have been played that day by anyone.
OK - on to today and the good stuff.
Today the Masters played at Blue Valley in tee times, and I love the course for it makes you think about lines, placement, and distance on every hole. Shot in the top 30 scores today (a day late unfortunately)
The swollen thumb actually proably helped me grip the disc better today (being dry also was a big help with footing) and I only had 1 bad drive out of the 18 holes. Upshots being left 25-35 long or short was what kept me from having an outstanding round, as I only cashed in 3 outside the circle while missing 6 under 35 - 2 off the tray, 3 off the chainholder and 1 airball uphill.
Being one of the first Masters groups to tee off allowed me to be able to watch several cards and the 2 leaders cards play most of the back 9. Phil is an animal, and I wish my hometown mate well.
Lorelei played relatively solid at Swope having only 1 bad hole (Hole 13) where she went OB in the road twice after getting a gash in her Archangel which caused it to turn more on her than she thought. The Juniors that have signed up for the transportation package then
got to go to Power Play - which had an Arcade, black light mini golf, and other things for a few hours before coming back to the Host hotel for the FLY MART.
Lots of merchandise and lots of people were in attendance there, and we made several rounds in there to not miss anyone or anything in the 2 & 1/2 hours we were there. Saw lots of players, friends and vendors that I hadn't seen since '08 Worlds and traded stories with lots of people.
We left before the end as we have a 5 AM wakeup to get Lorelei to the host Hotel for her 2 rounds at Pleasant Hill in the morning. Tomorrow after the rounds are done, Lorelei and the others are going to the Oceans of Fun water park before heading back to host Hotel.
A HUGE THANKS to Jack Lowe and John Chapman for hooking this Transportation and 2 different amusement places deal up for the Juniors that wanted to do it as they are having a blast hanging out together and thinking about other things besides competiton.
Thanks to all the well wishers as well as those having fun with my being injured, as I stayed on my feet today and didn't have a new injuries to add. Wrist/Thumb area is black and blue but still functioning.
Tomorrow is Swope then Wyco for me as I have dropped into the E Pool after yesterdays' horrendous start. Goal is now to get my first 2 of Worlds and to continue to play as well as possible.
More tomorrow night,
Keith

what can you tell me about phil arthur? putting machine?
Phil is more of a regional player. Georgia and surrounding states. 2005 and 2006 were really good years for him. 11th at worlds and 23rd at the USDGC. In 2005 at the Charlotte Open A-tier which I ran he finished tied for 2nd in a very impressive, international field.
And I'll also vouch for his great personality. The guy is fun both on the course and off. I saw him for the first time this year at the Hall of Fame Classic, which he was leading for a couple of rounds. He told me he's focused on being competitive again.
Watch out masters. There's a new big dog in town.
Jeff_LaG
Jul 30 2009, 10:44 AM
Jeff, has your unofficial evaluation of these courses changed at all in the past week??
Steve,
I tried to play as many courses as I could before Worlds began. I played Blue Valley, Waterworks, Cliff Drive, Thornfield, Swope, and WyCo. Look for my reviews of the courses posted earlier in this thread.
Personally, I thought WyCo was better than advertised and possibly a top tier course. It could use more accuracy testers, but the land really isn't available for that. I think they did the best they could with what was available. I just really like the look and feel of the course with the rolling elevation changes and mature trees. The OB hole and pond hole are really good course design.
From talking to players, everyone is saying good things about the previously listed top tier must-play courses. (Thornfield, Cliff Drive, Blue Valley & Water Works) Waterworks is probably getting the gold star of this year's Worlds.
Of the next tier (very good courses) I did like Swope despite the repetitiveness. It's just a very beautiful park with big elevation changes and hole#13, the pro par four down in the corner, really makes the course. If you put a course like that in Houston where everything is almost pancake flat, it's the signature course in the entire town.
Haven't heard much about Rosedale or Prairie Center which I guess means people are enjoying them okay.
Of the middle tier, Pleasant Hill has howler monkeys in the zoo across the street who apparently 'razz' players when they are putting, which is reportedly quite the comical scene. :D
I'm told that Shawnee has very, very little variety in hole distances with nearly every hole playing to an effective distance of about 350 feet. There are simply WAY too many 'push 3s' at this course.
As to Rosedale Down Under, the heavy rainpours on Tuesday made for a thoroughly miserable experience where it was impossible not to fall on your butt and get covered in mud. People seemed to enjoy it a lot more yesterday when the weather was sublime, but while it's not a bad course overall, it's simply not up to the level of all the other KC area courses. Paul Wright certainly must have enjoyed it, as he aced TWO holes there yesterday: hole#18 in his morning round, and hole#12 in the afternoon round!

Hey Jeff L,
I dont know if this is easy, tough or downright a pain in the cushion...but, is there anyway that the course being played can be named on the live scoring page. You know, Open women, round 4, and then name of course. I know it can be looked up, but it would be cool if that got upgraded. Just an idea, not a request.

KC Journal Day 6:
Someone let LaGrassa out of the scoring room for air so he can sort cards by HOT rounds going back as far as necessary as has been done for Every tournament in the 14 years I've played this sport (and I'm pretty sure before that) :)
By the way I'm not the only person who wonders what it up with that - Even the TD's are saying that they are told NOT to change the boards to the CORRECT sort - instead of some unexplainable sorting system.
Played Swope and Wyco today - At Swope I finally got my first 2 at worlds on the first hole of the round, then missed EIGHT other chances from inside or within 5 feet of the painted 10 meter circle before getting the 2nd 2 with 2 holes to go - Sadly all but 1 misses were chain holder hits. (you think after the first few I would have tilted the putter nose down a bit :( )
On to Wyco - My second favorite picturesque course at Worlds that I play, arriving almost 4 hours before the next round at 3PM. Wind is blowing stady at 10-15 with gusts at 20-25 pretty much the whole round which I love!
About 1/2 an hour before start, I practice all different angles from 15ft to the edge of the circle and miss only around 5 total.
I start off with a 2 and two holes later another 2 and sadly after getting SEVEN more drives to the circle or within a few feet of the circle I have the 2nd hottest round to 1000+ rated Eric "Roady" Roadhouse with just those two 2's - with this round missing ALL SEVEN off of the tray (you think after the first few I would have tilted the putter nose UP a bit :( )
Lorelei played Pleasant Hill Lake Course twice today shooting pretty goods rounds for her - getting the closest scores to Gabriella than she has had all week.
She is in the first 2 pictures in the set of Juniors pictures from Swope during their second round on Tuesday here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/pdga/sets/72157621889393374/
For those of you wondering if she is having fun - look at what in her hands and read the caption to the first picture :)
After Lorelei returned to the Host hotel after the Juniors trip to Oceans of Fun we had dinner with the Stroh's from California at the BBQ place in the gas station that has the highest rated BBQ in Kansas City. It stops letting people in at 8:30 PM and when we arrived a few minutes before that the line was out the door. 90% of the people insdie were disc golfers including the Readings, Voakes, and about 70 others.
Last playing round for me is at Swope at 11 AM, and Lorelei at Waterworks, and then we all will be watching the Hall of Fame inductions at the Banquet at Grinders.
My goals at Swope will be to NOT hit the chainholder or cage, except from the inside. :) - and to play ONE decent round at Worlds scorewise.
More tomorrow night after Grinders,
Keith
PS. - Have the scorers figured out the sort yet? :)

Live commentary with hole by hole photos starts just after 8am CDT for Open Men at Cliff Drive via Twitpics/Twitter feed on the PDGA Worlds Media page http://www.pdga.com/worlds2009. That's in addition to the Live Scoring for Open Men, Women and GMs this morning. I'll be posting online with phone coverage from the course from Bill Newman and Addie Isbell.

At the USDGC 2001, they had a camera on hole #17, 4 days in a row!
(great for me cuz' I birdied it 4 out of 4 and my sponsor saw me do it at his house/John Houck in Texas).
Last year coverage was better(Worlds) but mainly because people would go out and put stuff on youtube.
Right now I am very greatfull for all the players who make an effort to keep us posted!!!

sort cards by HOT rounds going back as far as necessary as has been done for Every tournament in the 14 years I've played this sport (and I'm pretty sure before that) :)
By the way I'm not the only person who wonders what it up with that - Even the TD's are saying that they are told NOT to change the boards to the CORRECT sort - instead of some unexplainable sorting system.
Keith, I think you've getting too much fresh air because you obviously haven't thought this one through. :D
After a shuffle where there were multiple pools, ties in total score CANNOT be broken using previous rounds because the competitors may have played different courses! Is it fair to break the tie on the previous round when one pool may have played Wyandotte County Park (par 59) and the other pool played Waterworks Park (par 55) which was what happened with the Advanced M & N pools? In those cases, PDGA numbers MUST be used to break the ties in total score.
Otherwise, all ties are indeed broken by hot round going as far back as necessary.

The most shocking thing about that...
I'm not shocked at all.
The kid is unreal - and for as amazing as a talent he is, his maturity, personality and attitude for the game eclipses that.
CORRECT, Those of us that are fortunate to play and know him, are not surprised. He has a great attitude for the game, and personna. He makes Open players want to age onto masters asap. A challenging par 4 in the open field would have to be some where in the vicinity of 1500 ft. Shorter than that may be a drop in 3. Great kid, 14yrs. You will see him again soon, probably at USDG. It was 10 strokes in the middle of the 5th round, But Anthon has a history of this. He made up 6 strokes the last round on Coda at the 2005 KC Wide Open, He came from 6 strokes back to force a playoff at the Okie NT.
It's not like you can control when you are about to get in the zone, but I think he got hot too early.

Definition: "Amateur status" is what is held by any golfer who is still an amateur, and what is given up when an amateur golfer turns professional.
A golfer who has amateur status is one who has never accepted money in exchange for golf; e.g., has never accepted prize money for tournament play; has never been paid to endorse a product; has never accepted appearance fees, and so on.
this is from the usga..does he get paid for placing like the sponsored pros?does his entry get paid?if he does then it would seem that he is getting paid to endorse a product?
yes i know this is a ball golf definition but it seems amatuer status should be close to the same...a team being sponsored by a shoe company with new shoes clothes etc is differnt than an individual being sponsored.does the 12 year old team get an incentive to win?does wiggins?
im glad he can play so well at an early age and from what i hear hes a great young-adult i dont want this to seem like im picking on him but in my eyes sponsership is for pros

No one has ever bagged more than Bobby Jones...
Keatts has come A LONG way in the last year. I remember his "coming out party" last year at the Dogwood Crosstown Classic, an A Tier.
He was like 930 and cashed taking merch. He took off after that and has been playing great golf - he has been vastly overshadowed by Kinkel and Wiggins.
I honestly would have picked these three top 3 from the beginning - I still think Wiggins pulls it out b/c he has the most experience in these situations, even at 14.
No matter what, if one of these three pull it off, we will have a classy am world champ (no offense to anyone else, just don't know them).

What is the difference in giving kids shoes or giving kids discs? this is ridiculous. amatuers are flowed product and being sponsored in every sport there is. plain and simple there is nothing wrong with being a sponsord am. as long as your not taking cash your not PRO. there is no discussion here period!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes the team would not have been SPONSORED w/ shoes if they did not excel at the sport. where on your definition above does it say anything about incentives to playing goog being a part of being Pro? also i have no idea what david sponsorship intels but are you assuming there in performance incintives in the aggreement? how do you know?

I wonder if Keats has smirked even one grin? I love playing with the guy, I love trying to make him laugh, heck, talk during a round. He is a great guy and has always had game, he just has decided to get serious about it. (great timing Matt)
Wiggins is an am player and he has denied cash and has had MANY opportunities to take it. He will be taking cash very readily soon enough. What is wrong with him being sponsored with merchandise. All am's get some free merchandise along the way, should we be considered pros? I understand what you saying, I just don't think it is an argument that has a case.
Gallops, Friend, Sult playing well too.

FWIW, David has never accepted any cash. We have made a major point of stating he is not accepting cash at every tournament he has placed highly in, in the professional division. If he played in only am events I'm sure he would be called a bagger by some. You can't please everyone. He has never received cash from Innova for personal achievements. I have paid his entry fee to every tournament he has ever played as well as the Innnova sponsored USDGC.
We try to go by the letter and spirit of the rules. The rules vary from sport to sport. I personally feel that it is entirely acceptable for a boy who only turned 14 years old 3 months ago to have a crack at winning the am worlds when he is clearly not good enough to win the pro worlds. He practices disc golf every day. He works hard mowing lawns to afford to buy his favorite collector discs. His room is full, literally overflowing, with disc golf discs, baskets, posters, DVD's etc
IMHO there are no professionals in disc golf. I define a professional as someone who makes their living at a particular endeavor. Nonetheless, as I said, we follow the letter and spirit of the rules as best we can interpret them.
Right now, I'd put his chances of winning at roughly 20 - 25 percent. His competitors are all worthy and playing well. They are all fine young men and I'm proud to feel they are my friends. However things turn out, the last 6 years I'm sure I will look back on as some of the best of my life because of the times my son and I have spent together, win or lose, rain or shine. It's all about the journey not the destination - and the love, the love of the sport, the friends we have met, the outdoors and the special personal moments we have shared. For all you disc golf Moms and Dads out there - go out and play it with your kids - life doesn't get any better than that. I'm signing off until after the finals. I'm on my vacation too after all :-)

For all you disc golf Moms and Dads out there - go out and play it with your kids - life doesn't get any better than that. I'm signing off until after the finals. I'm on my vacation too after all :-)
Well said and the best of luck to your son!!

Let's get back to the photos, videos etc. I would like to see a group pix of all the pools before they teed it up on the first round. There are players there I have not seen in years. Too bad no one has posted a greater variety of pix. We need Will there!
Another good photo opp would be pix of all the players from their home states.
