Not if you are a broke kid! I don't see why they just don't have the cutoff 1 month before the event for everyone. I mean I don't want to ship off $250 8 months before an event without even knowing if I would attend.

YES! WALLPAPERS! Two years ago you had some GREAT wallpapers up for download and my brother and I each had one up for at least a year (I had the ring, he had the picture-says-1000-words one). All you'd need is to repost those (well, maybe alter the ring one to show current numbers of wins Climo and Schultz have lol), they were great! More would be awesome, but yeah they were definitely very cool and I'd like to see them back up.

then dont take the spot if you cant attend, or have your sponsor cover you in, or call up jonathon and tell him you cant pay him yet and see if you can get on a payment plan. there are plenty of options available all you have to do is open your mouth and talk to people. you would be surprised what can get accomplished that way, rather than just saying i cant get my money in on time and saying that the time they give everyone to pay isnt enough.

I just don't think it is the best system. Why would someone who isn't sure they can make it give up the spot? If I had more than a 10% chance of going I would take it because I'm sure the only other way to get in would be to monday qualify.
Heck there aren't even any qualifiers remotely close in the 1st place.

Apr 10 2008, 09:48 PM
i personally dont think its the most effective system, but it has been the same for quite a few years now. So i would think by now that people would understand what is involved, if you qualify or are trying to qualify, you know you only have 30 days after you do qualify that you need to pay if you are going to go. If you cant go then you dont pay, thats how it is.

Not sure if Dave would pay for him at this point in time. I just never agreed with this system where you have to pay within 30 days whether you qualify 8 months or 1 month before. So does anyone know how long TDs have to pay? I would hope it is within 30 days of the event as well.

here's another counter to that... one i'm amazed nobody else has brought up yet... Nikko won $562 @ the tourney he qualified at... thats obviously more than enough to pay the $250. Generally it seems like those that qualify make enough @ they tourney they are at to pay up soon. So the poor boy stuff goes out the window.
seems like he threw almost $250 worth of plastic into the lake at winthrop in frustration on hole 18 when he realized he wasn't going to make it in on monday qualifier last year... not to mention how much he spent to try and qualify (can't remember exactly how many times he tried)
I was going to say that it's sad that he may take a spot from someone @ bowling green if he keeps shooting well like he is but since he's qualified once he can't take the spot @ a qualifier again (which actually raises another good point... if you are that good and not sure if you'll go or can't afford to pay early then turn down the spot and plan to qualify at a later tourney)
like someone else said... its sad but its the same story every year... people forget or fail to send $ ... just sad for Brendan Hickman (i think that was the next guy below Nikko)
on a more positive note... as someone else said... DOT = AWESOME! Someone put up a request about wallpapers and you came thru! Good job on the site and updates!!

streaming video is still a wee bit out of our reach at this moment. But if anyone knows someone who can make it happen and a sponsor to pay for the bandwidth, then by all means let us know. I could see a camera set up at 17, which could get a good view of hole 5 and hole 18's tee. Plus 2 commentators! Could be just like amen corner. The thirty day thing is just to get folks committed early for planning on both the travelers end and the USDGC end. This is very fair for a tournament of this size and caliber.
No one should be bashing the fairness of the 30 days when they read about the liberal back out policy that allows a player a refund up to September 25th. There may be only a couple of players who don't have sponsors or may be young and have trouble committing that amount of money. I would think a proud father or friend may be able to help if that were a problem. Just think of it as a bank deposit you could get back if you find you are unable to make it, but if you went to the USDGC , the dividends in life experience will far out weigh that investment. :D

As someone who works in banking, let me also suggest this option to players.
It is VERY easy to get approved for a 250 dollar credit card. Apply for one. Get a cash advance. Put the money in you account. Pay for the tournament.
Also, esp if you are a good player, you can make that 250 back at your local B Tier this next weekend.

If you are a COLLEGE STUDENT you could get a part time job, go hustle some money on the course, ask mommy and daddy for money, go sell plasma or other bodily fluids, send in one of those credit card offers you get in the mail each week, etc...
Also, if you are a COLLEGE STUDENT that can find enough money to travel to and enter an NT or qualifier, I'm thinking you can find enough money for the entry fee to the USDGC. Again, the winnings from the qualifier should be more than enough to cover the entry fee.
If the event was that important to a competitor who failed to pay on time in the past, they would register early. Note: Josh Anthon, who lost out going to USDGC in the past because he failed to enter on time, was the first to register this year.

It would be more fair overall if players were allowed to decline qualification if they were confident they could qualify at a later event. This would level the playing field a little better between early versus later qualifying events. As it is right now, the touring guys are "forced" to rack up the qualifying spots in the early events such that lower level players are more likely to qualify at later events because there are many more higher level players who have already qualified earlier in the year. That means some parts of the country have better chances for lower level players to qualify only due to the order of events. Lower level players in areas with early events have much lower chances to qualify unless they travel to late season qualifying events, and some do.

from what i've read theres nothing saying they can't do this... using Nikko as an example... i haven't read anything saying he couldn't have said that he didnt want the spot just yet and it'd bump down to the next guy. Giving Nikko the chance to take a spot later in the year when he was sure he'd be able to go to the USDGC or have the funds to pay or whatever.
This is exactly what i've proposed in the past... if you aren't sure about the date or the $... turn down the spot @ the tourney so the next guy can get in and free yourself up to be able to try again later.
(note: technically the excuse of not being sure if you can make the date is null/void since they will reimburse you if you pull out before a certain date)

I really would like to see the USDGC (and other qualification only tournaments) adopt the USADGC's policy.
The USADGC invites the exact amount of players (except for like 5 who get the chance to Monday qualify) they want in thier event.
If 9 people don't sign up that are invited, 14 spots are open on monday.
Let's say the USDGC goes through and decides they want 200 spots.
They invite (with the same process) 195 and save 5 for monday.
Only 147 of the 95 get in. There should be 53 spots on Monday. Sure, they would lessen the "quality" of the event (in terms of talent) but it sure would add to the purse and add to the number of people cashing which then in turns makes more people want to play the event, esp. those playing for a paycheck.
Technically if the USDGC only had 30 people pre-register (which I add will NEVER happen) the USDGC would only have 35 players.

So if someone qualifies early and fails to pay, does the next person in line at the event where the first person qualified, but failed to pay, get a chance at that spot?
nope.

The USDGC website does not list any side action this year, and so far I haven't seen the Charlotte Open on the calendar.
We are currently looking for a prime date to hold a B or C Tier in Gastonia (just outside of Charlotte). Last year's was the weekend of Thanksgiving.
Does anyone know of a reason that the weekend before the USDGC (9/27-28) would be unavailable for a tournament? And what kind of attendance do you think we'd get if we held it on those days, seeing as part of the Charlotte Open's draw was the one qualifying spot.
Thanks,

The USDGC will be posting side action as things get closer to the event.
The weekend before the championship will be The United States Doubles Championship, held on a course in Charlotte for the first day (Saturday) and (Sunday) on the Gold Course at Winthrop University.

i was looking on the DGC site and found the caddy book but it says that it is the 2007 version. i noticed that some holes were different than what i have seen on the tourney DVD. Are there any changes between last year and now? Is there a 2008 book available?
ActiveCurrent
May 21 2008, 10:08 AM
The caddy book is traditionally made available right before the tournament. Although, the 2008 caddy book is currently in production, they usually change holes up until the last minute. This makes it tough to publish the book prior to setting this year's course in stone. I may put up some of the hole graphics for this year early, but not until I run it by the powers that be at Innova.
There have not been any changes to the course from last years configuration yet. But it is roc season, so no one is really working on the course as of now.
xterramatt
May 21 2008, 11:06 AM
Yeah, last year's will give you a nearly complete course. Now that most of the construction projects are finalized, I don't foresee many drastic changes, probably just tuning of the roping to present a better challenge for the Championship.
You know I'll be practicing!

I have a quick question about how we view the dots. While the final group is playing, should we offer the ability to go back and look at previous holes? All of the holes will be archived, but not necessarily during the round.
I could see a use for the archive if there were a backup on hole 13 and you had time to peruse back through.
What do you think?
stack
Jun 01 2008, 01:59 AM
going back and looking @ archives would be cool!
the best would be somehow showing where all of someone's previous drives had landed on that hole so far that day (wouldn't have to do it for each golfer and hole but maybe on a few holes would be cool)
ActiveCurrent
Jun 01 2008, 02:04 AM
Looking back at archives after the round will be a no brainer. Definitely putting that in. But, do you need that functionality during the round? Or is it good enough just to see what hole they are currently playing?
You will be able to see where there shots landed for the entire hole this year.

Unfortunately we may not do a person's dots until they reach the final group. So we may not have that information to pull from. We could do something like that if we had dots for the entire field. We could show all the drives from every competitor on hole 17 for 1 day. That would be hot. But let's jump back into reality here.

How about just continuously retaining the previous hole than the one being played? Viewers may be temporarily interrupted with a phone call, beverage run, potty break, computer reboot, etc. and miss the final shots on a hole before returning and they could see what they missed.

Hello, Dotmeister.
I think the Archived dots are great, particularly for those of us too busy to catch the action in real time (although it is happening all around us). For the '07 Dots, the player scores reflect the final score throughout the dot series. If there's a way to archive each sequence with the current scores at the start of the hole, that would be most excellent.
Bravo, as always.

or even more importantly maybe a quick clip put together by the USDGC showing some highlights... the crowd cheering/watching the guys crush across the lake, the $$$ being delivered via Harleys, Crowd shots w/ some action following the lead cards, a screenshot or 2 mixed in w/ the dot technology, etc.
Set to the right music a quick 30 second clip like this could help greatly! They'd just have to find someone with the talent to mix this and the ability to get them some footage of things or ask whoever might have it to put something together.
great idea about sending them some swag regardless. although i'd recommend the spectator disc since they wouldn't know the difference anyway! ;)

Billy Crump and Brian Graham have contacted Mike and Mike on ESPN thru the PDGA. They are trying to get them down to The USDGC this year and do a live feed during the event.
We need your help: to whomever reads this post, if you could just send an email to them and give them some good reasons why they should come down to The USDGC.
I am going to be emailing them several times a week giving them different reasons why they should give DISC GOLF a chance.
Billy wants thousands of emails to flood their computers. This could happen with enough effort from our community of Disc Golf.

For those that have played the course before here's a little info that may help out.I played it on Saturday and noticed one major change from last years set up.
On hole #8 there are 3 large trees missing that were right in front of the teepad. This has really opened the fairway up. RHBH throwers no longer have to throw a s shot. You have a straight line to the next set of trees about 250 feet out and then a gap about 40 feet wide to clear to get to the first landing area. This has also opened up a roller route for those willing to risk it.

serious note... this is where having major sponsorships or companies involved w/ the PDGA would be bonus... having that company contact the show to work something out would probably get a lot further than any of us would. ie... enterprise or microtel purchase some advertising time (or however it works with this show) and strongly encourage them to come to USDGC which would also get their name out there further since I'm sure USDGC would give a high level of sponsorship to a company willing to help like that.

Was just curious as to how they determine how many people make the cut for the 4th round. I noticed only 32 didn't make it last year outt 168. That's like the top 80% (which is cool of course). Looks like this year they're will probably be at least 170 players. We are already at 152 registered and we still have 2 or 3 more qualifiers to go in and the list hasn't been updated for 2 days (I'm still not on there). Anyways was just curious if anyone knew what they based the cutoff on.

The Northwoods Open (Pro A-Tier) at Sandy Point Resort & Disc Golf Ranch was the site for the Wisconsin USDGC Representative spot to be awarded.
10 people paid $25 to put toward the chance to win this spot. When it was all said and done, two people, John Terlap and Ken Kreie were tied. As advertised, they went to a playoff hole and once Ken's 28 foot straddle putt missed John put in from 12 feet to win the spot. His $230 entry is covered and he received the extra 20 dollar bill for his travels (which would barely get him out of state with gas prices these days).
John is a masters age player that attended the Minnesota Majestic this year in hopes of qualifying for the USDGC. It didn't happen that weekend but his wife and family have been supportive of his quest and determination from the beginning of the year and Wisconsin is blessed to have such a fine representative at the USDGC.
I fully expect John Terlap (http://www.pdga.com/tournament/playerstats.php?PDGANum=7981&year=2008) to cash at this year's event! Good luck to everyone.
