I noticed that Lavone Wolfe took an 11 on hole 3. Does anybody have any idea how that could possibly happen. The only thing I can figure is that he kept going OB and re-teeing. Seems almost impossible to me.

cgkdisc
Oct 02 2008, 04:21 PM
Hole 3 should probably be a buncr hole instead of OB since you have to retee if you go OB on the tee shot. So you can potentially rack up some big numbers faster like Lavone.

Looks like Koling and Stahlin are all tied up. Maybe they'll be in the same group tomorrow?

So if you go OB off the tee on 3 it's a mandatory re-tee? Even though there's a spotter by the green that can spot where the disc last crossed in. That just doesn't sound right to me. It's an easy enough shot, but you shouldn't have that harsh of a penalty if you do shule out.

i think its because the OB around the basket barely reaches 10m and if someone went OB there they would have a relatively easy circle 3 and the scoring separation would be off

I have to believe for players this high up in the groupings that most all will be going for it when it's not windy. It's not that hard of a shot (when you're not on the lead card ) to throw 285-300 to be safe and longer if you can control your left/right well. It's pretty much a line drive, medium ceiling shot to get under the limbs of the tree you can see in the flightway on the dots diagram.

If that 1087 unofficial rating holds up, it will be the top rating ever for courses of 66+ SSA. Climo has the record at 1078 from a 56 at Winthrop in the wind during 2004. So Avery has a good cushion in case the SSA comes down a little more before this round is over like it usually does. I'm thinking 1085 which is smoking!

It really took four years to fall. Climo's 56s last year were rated 3 and 7 points lower than his 56 in 2004 which had the rating record until now. Since the course changes each year, the rating record is a better measure to compare apples-to-apples.

Shouldn't it be Doss, McCray, Jenkins and Shultz? McBeth would lose out due to a higher PDGA number to Shultz, and Jenkins would Trump Shultz with a better second round score! Consistency is key and I believe they used PDGA #'s to break ties in the first round for second round tee times.

Second card should be McBeth, Climo, Locastro and Barsby!

I think someone needs to resort the scores on the PDGA tournament page. Also the overall page on USDCG leaderboard (http://discgolfunited.com/leaderboard/index.cfm?thisLayout=YES) needs to be resorted, it still shows Brad Schick at the top.

There are some Pros. But for the most part we're all just people that compete in the Open Division. Using the term to amend a particular activity, as in Professional Disc Golfer, means you're in a particular profession as a permanent career. Few of us are really at that level or make that amount of money.

Yup, he tore it up! Check out the interview we got with him today, it begins during warmups and then concludes after his historic round. It's the top vid on our disc golf page and features a highlight of Nate calmly facing down the "putt of death" and finishing with a birdie on 18.

If you click the "more" link there you'll find other bits with Schick and Jenkins (also golden today).

Dave's 8 on hole 18 started with a bad break. His drive hit a fairway tree (in bounds) then kicked uphill and OB. He tried a hyzer approach, throwing wide and entirely over an OB area but failed to make it back inTWICE. He'd just come off a clutch deuce on 17 and up till that hole he looked like he'd finish with a score in the 50s. Winthrop Gold can be brutal.

from the USDGCblog.com about the distance qualifiers...
(kinda funny that 507 was the max point in each round no matter who threw it ... also wonder if Double G beat Avery with his own disc?!)

CONGRATS AGAIN Double G!!!

Round 1
Linus strm 477 ft. Mirus
Robbie Bratten 492 ft. 4x Z Force and 1x ESP Flash
Jussi Meresmaa 453 ft. Pro Destroyer
Avery Jenkins 507 ft. Pro Destroyer
Garrett Gurthie 450 ft. Pro Destroyer
Jussi had two turnover and three hyzer out. I expect a longer throw from him next round. Garrett is throwing two discs with Averys name on it.

Round 2
Linus strm 441 ft.
Robbie Bratten 465 ft.
Jussi Meresmaa 438 ft.
Avery Jenkins 495 ft.
Garrett Gurthie 507 ft.
The measurements on Garretts last throw is so close theyve called Avery and Garrett down to the spot. This must be close. Its a tie! Their throws were within the accuracy of the measuring device. Garrett and Avery are going to throw 5 more each! The longest of these 5 will determine the winner. Its 52 degrees.

Sudden Death
Avery Jenkins 492 ft.
Garrett Gurthrie 507 ft.
Congratulations Garrett!

I'm not sure why they describe hole#12 at Hornet's Nest as a par five...it's pretty much the textbook definition of a pro par four. The drive is about 300 ft. to the landing area, then a 90-degree dogleg right with a 330-ft. approach. Perhaps because errant shots into the woods are heavily punished, and missing the small landing area is easy to do, the scoring average on this hole may lie somewhere around 4.3-4.5 for 950-rated golfers. But most seasoned experts should be occasionally making runs at a birdie three on this hole and taking 4 at worst. I cringe when Nature Boy Billy Crump keeps referring to it as a 'legitimate par 5' because it's just not. When I played this hole, a 5 absolutely felt like a bogey.

it def. plays a lot tougher than 12 @ winthrop... 12 had more eagles on it yesterday than 12 @ hornet's nest has probably had in its history!

3 picks up strokes on pretty much everyone in the field and 4 picks up strokes on some here and there.

It is a par 5 that if you play safe, is a fairly simple 4. The risk reward comes on the 2nd shot b/c going for 3 can lead to 5's and 6s.

Helicopter shots are usually with a putter and are thrown fairly high and they drop straight down. He might be referring to a "helicopter putt" though, which is just a high lofty putt that loses spin and drops straight down.

At least that is how I have referred to a helicopter.

Brian- when you get Harold, Jonathan, or another original USDGC guy on can you ask them:

what a ordinary tournament needs to do to start taking the steps towards their level of a tournament? How did they build a volunteer base originally? How did they gain the support of the Rock Hill community?

What is this Bunker Rule?

On holes 10, 13, 14 and 17 there's no OB. All of the area surrounding inbounds is a buncr. If you land in the buncr, you have to rethrow from your current lie without penalty but you count the throw itself. So your score goes up by one each time you land in a buncr but you don't advance down the fairway.

In some sports like softball, if the team is some number of runs ahead of the other team, like maybe 11 runs after a certain number of innings, the "mercy rule" ends the game to prevent the pounding from getting worse. Harold was briefly wishing there was something like that where you could say "no mas" and take a score like 10 on a hole and stop there.

Let's see here, Koling at 62 and Stahlin at 77 playing on the same card. They should both get to play tomorrow.

And this should put to rest once and for all the Jeremy vs. Daemon debate.

daemon beating big jerm, not really a suprise

LOL... YUP! :)

Other two rounds pretty close. Aberration? *eye roll* The whole Daemon v. Jerm thing is hilarious. I love how its actually become a message board fixture.

i only enjoyed egging the whole daemon vs big jerm thing after all the people who were just slobbing over big jerm before worlds, its was borderline obnoxious

big jerm is a real good player

daemon isnt bad either, he had a bad round, it happens any word on how he did on the putting finals?
