Val's 70 in the second round with 1002 unofficial rating will put her third best all-time for women in the 66+ SSA course category just behind Juliana's back-to-back 69s at the 2001 USDGC. Likely the first time a brother and sister shoot all-time top 10 records in the same round!

Hi Chuck,
I wanted to send you a PM but understandably you are not taking any at this moment. Here is a quick question.. where is the top 10 lists for these SSA rounds you have speaking of. I know I shot a round of 68, 69 and two 70 at the USDGC and was wondering where they fell in the mix.

Some highlights from the Distance showcase.
*GG, Robbie, Jussi and Avery all hit the road with GG getting one to skip over. A couple of others would have crossed if not for getting knocked down by trees.
*Linus was SICK as he was throwing close to the road wearing slip on loafers.
*Lil Wiggy got a number across including one about 30 feet short of the road.
*Robbie threw a pure hyzer across. A Big Horkin Hyzer.
*Jussi has a low 360 release. There were a number of times that spectators sitting right in front of the launch area were almost decapitated, or so it appeared from up top and all the ducking.
*Main discs that were thrown were the Champion Boss, the flat flippy ones, Star destoyers & Xcalibers.
*Robbie and Linus got KC ROCS across.
*WunderKid Jeremy Koling threw a side arm over after the awards. In 8 years down there this is the first time I've ever seen anyone throw a sidearm across. Stokley came close a few times and he had what some consider to be the longest sidearm out there.
*Also after the awards Will Shusterick & Paul McBeth came within 15 feet of throwing Aviars across.

Not sure if anyone else replied, but I was in her group. She had a perfect drive to allow her a good shot at birdie. I believe she threw a Monarch. After it got flat, it looked like it was in the chains for the next 150 or so feet. The chains exploded and the disc stayed in. Our whole group and spotters erupted and the group ahead of us knew something big happened. Just wish we had it on tape.

Just want to add one more comment about USDGC..
I never understood until I got down there and saw it in person. This event is just head and shoulders above anything else I've seen in DG. If this thing isn't on ESPN or Versus in a few years I would be surprised. The course is breathtaking, every hole is a test and spectator friendly.. The gallery on Saturday was huge! Great job to the USDGC staff!!
Got a few more pics of the lead group on Fri and Sat:
http://www.discgolfscene.com/courses/Winthrop_University/Gold_Championship
I raked and draged a good bit of the pond on Saturday and got back a lot less than usual. I don't know if it was all bear or some other people. But I put the discs in the bin at the pro shop after the awards. Sunday I had a round with some friends and when we got to 18's tee a guy threw a disc over the lake from 5's fairway onto 18's fairway. It was one of the discs I had pulled out of the pond the night before. The guy got in his car and drove off. Maybe it was his, maybe not. But the honor system is broken at this event.

What an awesome event this was. Congrats to Nate "Bobby Hill" Doss for his great win over the best field of the year. The course was HARD but fair, I had 6 birdies in 4 rounds (ouch). Got to play with Linus the 1st round, Stan and I complained that he was out driving us with his putter!! The last round with young David Wiggins was what I hope was a glimspe of what our future will be in disc golf. Made a eagle 3 of Hole #12 rather easy. Oh and he just missed the 10K ace of Hole #3. Great job Mom & Dad!
Was a treat to play this event again, it keeps growing bigger and better ever year. Thanks to all the staff, spotters, drivers and players for the most professional disc golf event we have.

Once again if you missed this event, either as a competitor or spectator, you missed out on another classy act put on by Zonedriven, Innova and all of the volunteers.
And to elaborate on something Matt just said. This year was extra special in that alot of folks caught a glimpse of the future stars of the sport. David Wiggins Jr., Nikko Lacastro, Paul McBeth, Kris Orrick, Will Shusterick, Matt Orum, Greg Barsby, Jeremy Koling and the rest of the youngsters put on quite a show. Many of them sharing the lead card during the week. I for one look forward to the intense battles between them in the future USDGC's.
These kids all have the drive and talent to one day become Champions in thier own right. And to the other "seasoned" youngster Nate Doss. Huge props on a stellar week. You not only showed you deserved it with your play but with the passion you have for the game. I always repected your game and after your speech I gained alot of respect for you as a person. Way to go Champ. This won't be your last.
360 days and counting til USDGC #11.

BEAR IS THE MAN... well... dog... he's actually a dog... but he's still THE MAN!
Thank you!!!
We always try to hand deliver everyone back to their rightful owner. A couple years ago I had told people their discs were in the basket by the pro shop and when they went to look for them, they weren't there. We still have about 10 and I'll be trying to addresses or ph#'s and mail them unless they'll be at a tourney we'll be going to. We had pretty much been able to every one back that he pulled out before Sat. He was working the pond as the awards and distance were going on. That's when he found yours.
He's up to 605 for the year now. Bear's no slouch and that's just his parttime job.
The only Boss he pulled in was a prerelease no stamp of Dave Dunipaces. When we went to give it back, Dave said to keep it. We got a prototype no stamp destroyer of DD's last year with the same generousity. Right after talking to Dave and Craig Leyva, Bear went over and pulled out Craigs priceless pre release disc. I can't remember the model but he was pretty estatic about it.

Great to see you again too Joe. Yea the turtle scare (a 100+lb pitbull was killed by a snapping turtle the week before we got there) had me keeping him out a little more than normal plus we could only get down there after the players finished. I'm trying to convince JP to let Bear spot live next year on either one of those 3 holes. While we were working the EDGE village, I saw several go in that I know he could have had before the golfers got there from the tee. That was how we worked the other majors this year. When he sees them go in, he's got better than a 90% success rate. As glad as everyone was to get their discs back the next day I know they would have been overjoyed to get them right away and have them for the rest of the round. There were an unbelievable amount of 1st runs, prereleases and old time CE and 9 and 10 time KC stuff (almost all the rest was star or equivalent) he recovered. Average value per disc was higher than any other tourney we've done. I'll post names tonight of those discs we still have.

I honestly don't appreciate that comment.
The USDGC is the best thing we have in disc golf. Check FDM issue 2 where I was quoted saying that. Sure there are things I don't agree with like some qualification things and OB rope everywhere, but it is clearly the best event in disc golf.

i agree that there is alot of young, exceptional talent. the one thing that worries me a little about SOME of the members of this crowd was the absolute lack of professionalism. a seeming disregard for professional appearance; LOUD, repetitive cursing and disrespect for the members of the gallery. i realize they are young, but they are playing "professionally". their attitutude should reflect this.
i can hear the objection saying that some of the top "pros" act this same way. yes, to their shame. hopefully, this "new" crop will gladly accept the mantle of responsibility of being the future face of the PDGA.

I agree with Dixon on this one. We all have our bad moments. I do agree that age has something to do with it, but I cannot axcept that age is the reason certain people act that way. I have no room to throw my opinion in the ring until I first admit that I myself have had my moments. Its all about dealing with yourself. And everyone has to learn that they are in control of thier shots. Not the crowd, not the other players, not the OB rope. And its something that you have to come to grips with. Look at McBeth. You dont see him throwing temper tantums. I am not trying to toot his horn, its just that he has realized this. No matter how good of a golfer you are, at any age, you will never reach your full potential until you come to grips with yourself. And thats the mark of a true professinal. Just my .02.

And they will. Ask anybody, in the past I've had one of the nastiest tempers on the course of anybody. I would become angry with myself (not the things you seem to think competitors get angry at), I can't stand my own failures and can't tolerate them. But I've managed to get that under control. Its made me a better golfer, its given me the confidence that I'll be a 1000+ golfer soon enough. If I can do that, anyone can.
Frankly, I want to ask you this: How many people have you met that have told you Nikko Locastro is a bad person? Is an *******? Is a jerk? I haven't heard that once. Very few of the kids that have tempers on the course are real pricks. Those guys will grow up and mature, because they're good guys. Sure, there's the occasional bad egg out there that is a genuine jerk... that guy won't grow.
Frankly I can't wait to see what Nikko will do once he smooths over those rough edges. Kid's already sick good. McBeth may have a step on a lot of those guys, but its just the way some people are. Some people have different natures, some people grow at different rates... but those of them that are decent guys are going to wind up as chill as anyone on the course. It just takes a different amount of time for some people.

i can hear the objection saying that some of the top "pros" act this same way. yes, to their shame. hopefully, this "new" crop will gladly accept the mantle of responsibility of being the future face of the PDGA.

I don't know Nikko and have never met him. I did follow his group on Friday and because of his attitude I refused to follow his group on Saturday. Every bad shot he would walk off the tee and drop the F bomb. There are women and children following these players around and they are responsible for setting a good example.
On the other hand, for the second year in a row Avery was worked by a ringing phone while lining up his putt. Last year it was on 16, this year it was on 7. He missed his putt both times after resetting and trying to focus. He could've snatched those people up and gave them a piece of his mind. Instead he acted like a professional, took his medicine and moved on. He did kick his mini, but he didn't have an outburst of emotion towards the spectator. I'm partial to Avery anyway because of his game, but now I have mad respect for him as a person.

game. These kids are good. McBeth is a true athlete. That being said when money hits good players will be everywhere and this lack of professionalism will not be tolerated. Nikko is out of control. Tiger is one of the worst on the PGA tour. It's part of the game, and is simply a reflection of the persons true character.
The lesson here is just because you're a great athlete doesn't make you a great person. We all have flaws.

What is even funnier is after Nate gave his quick thanks to his sponsors, he gave a long heartfelt thanks to Innova, Zonedriven, Harold, JP and all the volunteers. To him this isn't about Innova vs. Discraft. It's about the vision of folks like Harold and JP to better this sport through this tournament.
I guess you would have to been there to really appreciate the admiration he showed towards the "competitor". And believe me when I tell you this, when Nate started tearing up during the acceptance speech, there was no one in that crowd who noticed what logo was on his shirt.

this is backwards thinking. the money won't come when the top players are behaving like this. besides, if they behave this way and the money shows up, why should they change?
but more importantly, i'm not asking them to behave professionally so that we can get money. i am asking them to act professional so that the game i love and strive to represent well is seen in a good light.

I don't know Nikko...I warmed up with him @ a tournament last year and he seemed like a nice guy. That being said, he has absolutely no clue to how much of a negative impact his poor behavior could have on the sport. All the prestige of the course and USDGC and Nikko is still spouting off like he's in his living room. Needless to say, many see this as very disrespectful to EVERYONE. He doesn't see it, obviously. He doesn't realize how being a nice guy interpersonally doesn't matter when thousands of people he will never meet see and hear about his antics on the course.
If he was cursing after tee shots, etc., audible to members of the gallery, then shame on the other players and officials that did not intervene. We have rules against such conduct, and if there is any event where they should be taken seriously, its the USDGC.
Don't put all the blame on Nikko, he is a kid after all. The TDs, officials, PDGA, and most of all his card mates have passively communicated that his behavior is 100% ok by not enforcing the rules.

Good call Discspeed. Look at Terrel Owens. All of his antics went unpunished ( well he got fined, but you know he could care less about that ) so he kept them up. When he got to Dallas they made him pay the consequences for his actions. He soon settled down and became a good player. He still has that wild boy I am going to run my mouth nature, which he still uses from time to time. But as a whole he finnally understood that his actions hurt him and his team mates. In our sport our team mates are the tour. THE WHOLE SPORT, not just one team. If the ones who are going nuts over themselves can learn this we would be MUCH better off.

Behavior in big time sports is impacted by money (if not by peer pressure) whether it's getting/losing sponsorship or fines. Only a handful of players are impacted by sponsorship factors and we don't have fines yet. That leaves peer pressure which puts it in the hands of the players to call the infractions.

I love that people have brought Tiger up in the "professionalism" discussion.
People obviously have never watched him in person up close. He pays more fines in the PGA than just about any other player on tour. His language after a bad shot is no better than some of the people you are mentioning on here. Heck look at John Daly, he is the poster child for unprofessional... the PGA is still doing alright after dealing with him.
Everyone deals with frustrating situations differently and until there are rules in place that are enforced, it's not going to change.

Actually, I followed him through the next few holes. He did kick his mini and had a stare down after missing his putt. After walking off the green I didn't see or hear anything. Of course there was a 3-4 card backup and I was watching the next group come in on 7 while waiting for Avery's card to tee off. I may have missed it. If so, I stand corrected.
I know that everybody is going to have there moments. I wasn't trying to single out Nikko, but I did notice it more with him than with others. People can blame it on being young and immature, but I don't buy that. Paul Mcbeth, Will and Lil Wig are true examples of that. I didn't see any of them fly off like Nikko when they made a bad shot. In fact, Mcbeth was all smiles even after falling off in the last round. He was having the time of his life. You could read his mind, he knew that he had arrived and that he would be the one hoisting that trophy one day.
Either way we are all responsible for our own actions. You should abide by all the rules and should be penalized for not properly enforcing those rules. If we leave the viewing public with a sour taste in there mouths, our sport will never progress. One day the wrong person may be offended and the USDGC @ Winthrop could no longer exist. I noticed something as I walked around all week. A good majority of the people spectating were being introduced to our sport at that very moment. There were so many people that I looked at and could tell they have never played before. I heard people asking questions and showing great interest. How do we want to influenece there opinion of this sport?

Well I usually do not chime in on this crap, but I wanted to on this because I was involved in this. Most who rant on here were never at the event, know nothing about it and start drama because they are bored at work. That being said, I have not thought too highly of Nikko in the past when I played with him. Honestly I wasn't thrilled to play with him the 2nd round at the USDGC, but I can honestly say he was quite pleasant. I also played with him the 4th round and he was well behaved even after taking a 9 on hole 4 and two bogies to follow that. He did show some frustration on hole 17 after missing the island three times, but that was understandable. He kept his mumbles down for the most part. I can say he has come a long way since earlier this year when I played with him, and I would expect him to keep moving in the right direction.
I am sure we have all done things we were not proud of and all things will not be avoided. Tiger is a prime example, I would say the mics are usually turned off when he tees because of the bombs they know he will drop!
Thanks to everyone involved who made the USDGC special once again! I am so happy for Nate, what a great champion.

At qualifying it was slightly downhill, and a right to left tailwind...maybe 10 mph.
At the finals it was dead still, flat, and 52 degrees. Significantly cooler than qualifying.
They also had another day of playing on their arms as well.

If you haven't seen it, check out the USDGC video on our site (the part 2 one, disc golf page). In it you'll see how the winner handled some adversity on hole 11. He thought he'd made a birdie, got some roll aways, watched Avery hit a long birdie... www.flyingdiscmagazine.com (http://www.flyingdiscmagazine.com)
I follow around the top guys a lot. For the most part they are respectful of one another and of spectators. Incidents do arise, perhaps some personalities are more inclined than others. Disc golf is just the lens, people act like people everywhere (including in other sports). Maybe this is a good topic for some point/counterpoint. Got strong opinions? Email me, maybe we can use them.

so barely throwing 500 ft. in no wind on flat ground? that really surprises me, considering who was involved
were they doing 360's or just regular run ups?
I know they can still out drive me by a lot, but its gives us smaller level folks something to shoot for if ~500 in no wind is considered outstanding

Yeah, cold and heavy air was the culprit. The guys would be pumped with a big drive that looked gigantic and then the distance would come back at under 500'. I was sitting behind the guys throwing and it certainly didn't look like they weren't getting all of it. Same thing happened last year. Conditions are everything for getting big distance numbers.

BTW:
( do you know what the red lines under the words mean in the preview??)
Anyway;
I tried the soap thing with Nikko when he was younger, he just put hot sauce on it and ate it like an enchilada!  :(
Seriously though;
I heard he kept his composure quite well considering the trouble with double/triple circle O.B.'s, red rope, yellow rope, actual water, pavement, curbs, bamboo blockades, rocks, bricks, roll aways and other unfortunate mis-haps.
There's enough man made stuff on that disc golf course to make some players curse even before they play!
Maybe players will have to qualify to even become a professional disc golfer one day,,,you know,,, like in ball golf.
Maybe a series of physical tests of skill, written tests of the rules, even recommendations or referrals needed from other top pros!
Just a thought about the future of the pro tour and a possible solution to unprofessional behavior during events!
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!

Why didn't anyone give him a warning and then stroke him? I warned a player in my group in one round because he was a little out of control. He actually started playing better after the warning. Like Harold said, if you are sure you see it and it is a penalty call it ALL THE TIME. With one stroke costing hundreds of dollars in payout, maybe some of these players will work on their professionalism like they work on their putting.
