I live in Athens, North of Atlanta. I got gas this morning for $3.89 and have not seen a station without gas thus far. Our mayor is trying to have the UGA vs. Alabama game cancelled on fears that the 200,000+ converging on Athens will eat up all the supplies. I guess he doesn't care about the revenue that those people will bring in. Personally, I'm getting out of there. I hate UGA, especially on game day.

I wanted to share two updates. First, we've uploaded the USDGC Rules Q & A for those who are interested to know how certain potential situations will be ruled upon next week. The details can be found at http://www.usdgc.com/competitors and then click on 2008 Course Rules.
Second, thanks to a generous sponsorship from DGA, we are able to make the final day even more exciting. We will have a giant ring of fire Saturday afternoon after the toss across the lake. Everyone around the Clubhouse, players and fans alike, will have a chance to win a sweet DGA portable target. We are still finalizing the logistics, but this should be a lot of fun. Bring your disc for a chance on Saturday afternoon. Thanks DGA.
Take care,
Harold

I'm certain I saw Ryder Cup players taking some practice putts after a hole was conceded.
Correct. Practicing is all in match play after a hole is won / conceeded / lost.
Also, the Ryder Cup is not a PGA event. That is why there was a PGA event this weekend during the Ryder Cup.
The Ryder Cup is a property of and administered by the PGA of America. It's not a PGA Tour event.

course is looking purdy ... purdy tough! im liking it but i've heard grumblings from quite a few...
-ob string is inside the cypress trees on 4
-8's OB on the right is very tight on the right side
-888 playing buncr is going to be interesting
-17's green has changed shape a good little bit and will be interesting with people having to get it in to move on.
-18 OB on right is moved waaay left and playing really tight.

Interesting decision. Playing it last year, having the line on the outside made it worth it to go for the keyhole because getting caught up in the pines would leave you with a putt from inside, barring a bad roll-back. Being someone that chose to go over the top (playing the spectator round) on his second shot, I approve of this alteration. :)

17's green has changed shape a good little bit and will be interesting with people having to get it in to move on.
That was true last year but you also got an added OB penalty. With buncr, at least there's less pain for missing. The lay-up area is still there in front of the tee.
I do agree the rope on the right side of 18 is awful tight considering the already challenging slope of the landing area. Righties might need a good forehand off the tee. Or, the best strategy might be to crush a roller as far as possible so if you do go OB, it's far enough down the fairway that laying up on the next shot for a drop-in isn't as difficult and still get a good chance at a par 4.

good calls on both accounts Chuck... playing dubs today we put our drive in on 17 and deuced... the guys we were playing with didnt get it in until the 4th try... made the putt and only took a 5. makes the hole a lot less punitive.
18 was just a (righty) sidearm then hyzer to the basket... those that tried to throw backhand (righty) had a lot catch an edge and roll OB left... def. more than a few bust out some crazy long rollers and if they went out they went out.
Monday qualifiers will be interesting this year... thinking 67/68 may be the cutt

I've got the hole stats from last year so we'll be able to compare how the revised holes play this year. But I don't think hole 4 has changed other than some foliage growth. I think Feldberg still feels that hole is the least fair of the 18. I didn't have much trouble playing out to the left off the tee. Then shooting a backhand under the tree limbs to the front of the Leyland mouth. Flopped a 50 footer to the pin and dropped it in for 4. Not saying I could repeat that for 4 rounds under tournament conditions. But it makes you wonder how you get scores more than 7 even if you miss that second shot to the mouth and get penalized once. Now if you keep trying to go over the top...

i think the big change is the one that doesnt show on the caddie book that Harold made on Wed/Thurs of last week... he moved the rope/OB to the inside front of the cypress trees! This closed up some of the shots you're talking about and made the overhand shot more attractive. Now if you throw over the top and roll back you have bricks/blocks stopping you inside the cypress for an easy putt instead of having to be inside the trees
heard from more than a few of the top pros that didnt like the change... especially since it wasn't in the caddie book and it was very last minute.

not really an answer but a reply... it happens ;)
seriously though... it has happened last year a bit... not sure why but scores weren't always updated in order and some took a while to get up altogether. I think some cards didnt get updated due to possible scoring issues that had to be sorted out by the TD @ the end before they put scores on live scoring (but it seemed like they only kept the 1 guys score off if that happened... not the whole cards)... who knows?

Not sure how many he put in the water. He is one of my homies and I know his game. He's a lefty and very short off the tee. I'd say 300 max, maybe a little less. No way he could clear the water and go for the green. Pretty sure he just slowly worked his way around.

Looks like the Unofficial Ratings aren't working on the PDGA display. I wasn't able to change the par to 68 either. I ran the numbers offline on the first six scores and the SSA came in at 65 with 7 rating points per throw. Schick's 60 is currently at 1034. Last year in the second round the SSA was just under 68.

I feel for him. That gold course isn't easy even without the ropes.
With them, it's a beast.
i am pretty sure a 63 is -5 not +9

They really need to get the leaderboard updated with the third scoring station info for those who've finished their round. Any idea what the holdup is? I want to see where Schwebby, Barry, Nate and Avery are. I know they aren't all through 6 holes yet, but we need some INFO! It's not like we can watch it on TV or catch it on the radio...

i dont necessarily think thats the case... if i'm right it seems like the buncr rule almost penalizes the best players but helps the lower level players and its more of something that levels the playing field (kinda like 'tiger proofing' holes in ball golf).
that being said it seems it wouldn't help someone like Kenny who is going to tend to keep it in the ropes anyway and will actually hurt him to the extent that those that usually have a hard time keeping it in wont be penalized quite as much (depending on the situation).
from talking with Kenny/Barry/Feldberg and a few others after they saw the changes they all seemed to think a hot round like Kenny had last year would be even harder to get this year

Depends on whose 'right' we're talking about. As a TD, Harold's version of par is right by default. In the case where a hole plays one throw tougher due to wind and OB, that doesn't make the par wrong. My comments have more to do with scoring averages on some holes that might end up quite a bit higher or lower than Harold's par such that others might prefer another par value, that is if they were TD.

Here's the latest scoring comparison using the top 114 rated players who have finished today and exactly average 1000 rating compared to a similar 1000 rated pool last year. Buncrs appeared to have little impact to change things on 10, 13, 14 and 17 based on scoring averages. However, I'm next going to look at the scoring spreads and see if there were differences on those holes. Holes 2, 4, 8, 9, 15 and 18 incrementally tougher so far this year.
<table> <tr> <td>Hole</td><td>1</td><td>2</td><td>3</td><td>4</td><td>5</td><td>6</td><td>7</td><td>8</td><td>9</td><td>10</td><td>11</td><td>12</td><td>13</td><td>14</td><td>15</td><td>16</td><td>17</td><td>18</td><td>Total </td></tr> <tr> <td>Par</td><td>3</td><td>4</td><td>3</td><td>4</td><td>5</td><td>3</td><td>3</td><td>4</td><td>4</td><td>4</td><td>4</td><td>5</td><td>5</td><td>3</td><td>4</td><td>3</td><td>3</td><td>4</td><td>68 </td></tr> <tr> <td>Avg 2008</td><td>2.7</td><td>4.2</td><td>2.9</td><td>4.5</td><td>5.2</td><td>2.9</td><td>2.5</td><td>4.1</td><td>4.2</td><td>3.9</td><td>4.5</td><td>4.5</td><td>5.4</td><td>3.0</td><td>4.1</td><td>3.2</td><td>3.3</td><td>4.5</td><td>69.7 </td></tr> <tr> <td>Avg 2007</td><td>2.5</td><td>3.8</td><td>3.0</td><td>4.1</td><td>5.0</td><td>2.7</td><td>2.6</td><td>3.8</td><td>3.9</td><td>3.8</td><td>4.7</td><td>4.5</td><td>5.3</td><td>3.1</td><td>3.8</td><td>3.1</td><td>3.3</td><td>4.0</td><td>67.0 </td></tr> </table>

I for one am encouraged to see fewer double-digit scores from elite players. I say the same thing every year, but something just seems intuitively wrong when the very best disc golfers in the world take scores of 11,12,13, etc. in a PDGA major event. The course design should not allow such, even if aggressiveness or even arrogance are the underlying reasons. With the exception of a 13 from Geoff Bennett on hole#9, and a 10 from Dixon Jowers on hole#13, so far I don't see 1000+ rated players taking exceedingly high hole scores.

Golden ticket winner Andrew McGettigan holding his own at 106th place with a great +4 round!
I wonder if Markus was putting or threw it in from the fairway for that eagle 2 on 10?
He had maybe a 30' putt and made it. :) SICK drive. Talking with Double G, he had a 14' putt, but missed it :(

Daemon??? Come on, Big Jerm takes the world Am title and you have the audacity to say that.... I bet by the end of the tourney he passes Daemon. Now that will be no big suprise to anyone in NC or the surrounding areas.

Not really a ton of "audacity"... I mean, one of them won the Am World Championship, the other won the Am National Championship. They've never competed before, so its interesting to see.

Big Jerm only lives 30 minutes from the course so needless to say he has played the course a few times but never in the USDGC, however I will let the scores on the end of Saturday speak for themselves.

Jeremy,
HAPPY BIRTHDAY,
Now that those 1st USDGC round jitters are behind you, BRING IT ON.
David Jr says thanks for all the supportive comments both on the message board and on the course. All in all an OK 1st round, but 4 OB's between 16 and 17 didn't help.

Second?
Use twitbin (a firefox plugin) and you will have your twitter feed next to the dots in one window.

Does anyone know how Justin Kreutzer got the only eagle 3 on 888? Not to mention he also eagled 12 right before that. If he could of taken a par instead of the snowman he got on 10 he would be tied for the lead right now. Pretty decent for a 967 rated player don't ya think.

I don't really know the answer to your question, but that dude can crush - he has this short 3 step walk/run up, then boom 500'
his short game usually gives him trouble, which is the reason for his rating, but he seems to be putting it together... if he can keep it in bounds and keep it together, I look for his distance to really help him out

Hey guys, we've got a nice video up on our site that features an interview with Ken Climo and then his day one FRONT NINE. He shot a 4-under on the front to kick off his solid day one 6-under 62. There will be more video uploads and written coverage each day during the event. Beautiful weather down here!

I wonder if he kept 'tin cupping' from the tee on hole 10? You almost have to drive into the buncr 4-5 times to get a snowman.

it's really great to see kansas city's own arturo villareal in the footage on kenny's card. it's arturo's 1st USDGC and to get to play w/ kenny was probably a huge treat for him.

hole 4 continues to eat people's lunch - some big numbers are being taken by lots of players
if you can birdie this hole, you are gaining a lot of strokes on a lot of people - but I guess thats what makes it Winthrop Gold, being several other holes could do the same on any given round

Buncr rule:
Any Hole with Red OB lines instead of Yellow OB lines are buncr holes. They are 10, 13,14,& 17 shown in the 2008 caddy book. If you throw OB anywhere on that hole, you re-throw from the previous spot and only count the practice throw. No extra stroke penalty.
I.E. You throw you tee shot OB on hole 17, you then re-tee throwing your second shot not your third.
