whats wrong with weatherford? its a tight course that asks for just about everything in your bag of tricks. and it doesnt get played enough.

Jan 01 2006, 03:57 AM
Weatherford is not a very tight course in my opinion. It has a low ceiling with tall grass which I guess you can call tight if you want. Not what I think of as a tight course.

What's wrong with Weatherford is that 9 temp baskets are not indicative of an A tier and that's why people complained 2 years ago.

Time to play my first ever Big Show event. Can anyone tell me a good, not overly expensive place to stay around Cedar Hill? I've never played the courses. From the description in the course directory, looks like they're fairly short and tight. Any comments?

The courses are fairly short and tight for now, the beaver course being the longer of the 2. Brian and I walked/played the other day and we have some good changes in mind. Now does anyone have a magical chainsaw that will operate on it's own????? If not, we will hopefully have some of the work done by the time The BIG SHOW rolls around.

I'd really like to see this year be one of the biggest turn outs ever for Mace's event, so try to sign up early and enjoy a well run event.

the beaver course is a legitimate course. not real long, and some holes are must-birds, but overall a solid course. it is absolutely ready to play and it also gets a full 10 for aesthetics.

the coyote course is shorter and much tighter. a certain degree of luck is a factor on many holes. a quarter inch difference can mean a kick into the schule, and that very frequently means one stroke to escape and another to get back on track.also, there are 10 righty holes, 4 lefty holes, 3 evens, and 1 thats too wierd to tell. if you played it twice and your tee shots varied by no more than a foot you could experience a score swing of 12 or more strokes. in its own special way it is already a classic course. fickle, but classic.

that being said, one could not ask for a more beautiful and serene setting for a course. i dont miss many oppurtunities to play either 18.

Well, how about this...how do they compare to the back nine at Cameron East for tightness?

cameron is a lot like the beaver, and the coyote is a lot like the beast, except shorter.

Good for Gill

Weatherford is a good course. If I play, I would rather have that course.

Arlington already has an A-tier event at it.

If you were to pick a different course, how about Ideal Golf Ranch as the 2nd course?

atxdiscgolfer
Jan 02 2006, 11:21 AM
Ideal Golf Ranch sounds good too.Is it similar to Spring Valley in the Houston area?

Pizza God
Jan 02 2006, 11:30 AM
have not played Spring Valley, but it is a long course with trees on more than 1/2 the holes. Not bad for a disc/ball golf course.

The problem I see is that it is a pay to play course and it is shared with Ball Golfers. The course would basicly have to be shut down for a weekend and I don't think the owners would like that unless they were compensated real good.

Jan 02 2006, 06:12 PM
This is not an issue that is open for discussion. We will use Z Boaz and Weatherford. The use of temp baskets and any other personal problems are just that, personal problems. Everyone will have to play the same courses just like any other event. The event is set and it will be a great event just like any of the previous Z Boaz Open's.

I just talked to Michael Gibson, and he said the baskets will be where they have been for the last week. So if you practiced the course this weekend, then you'll be shooting at the same course for the PIO. Several locks have seized up and the city is going to replace them very soon, but not in time for the tourney.

They have glow golf on Wed nights starting at 6pm. I hope to be able to get out there tomorrow night since i haven't seen the course since Daylight savings ended.

There is another pin for the holes you asked about, 7 is too short and easy, 12 longer (not a fan of that one), 15 shorter and farther left, 18 pin high but shorter (gives up many ace's).

Everyone will play one long and one short on the permanent 18 holes. You will play at least 21 holes, possibly 24 holes.

My only thoughts were if we have the players meeting at 9am and have a turnout like last year even short pads will take at least 3 hours. Assuming a decent lunch in there and 2nd round at 1:30 or so, we will be finishing in the dark.

It took 7 guys 2 to 3 hours on Sunday to play 18 alternate holes and that doesnt take into account that every single hole would have a card on it.

Just my thoughts either way I am paid so I will be there.

Don't go north of the airport. As you approach south dallas take:

I-45 north
1-20 west
360 north
exit Stone-Myers rd
Do a u-turn under 360 (the highway you were just on)

It's too late unless you have someone else to take the sign ups and do the hole assignments while you start the players meeting.

the_kid
Jan 05 2006, 07:52 PM
So no signups on saturday? What do you mean?

okcacehole
Jan 05 2006, 08:07 PM
I am pretty sure Daniel will be there for Pro Women also

gnduke
Jan 05 2006, 08:32 PM
I think he will be taking signups on Saturday, but would like players to do so a little more than 5 minutes before the player's meeting is supposed to start.

I'm pretty sure you meant Danielle. Yes, she will be here.

cgflesner
Jan 05 2006, 09:02 PM
That will only take 5 min. :o

BearCreak takes about as much skill as Moffit does to shoot a -10. I think I will make MacGregor my first tournament this year.

the_kid
Jan 05 2006, 09:15 PM
Yessssss....... I love Moffitt :DC'mon Chris are you trying to avoid me? 1st the Bass mini and now this one. :D

the_kid
Jan 05 2006, 09:16 PM
What are the shots like? Maybe I will leave my bag at home and bring like three discs. :D

cgflesner
Jan 05 2006, 10:06 PM
The long tees you will need most of your bag but the short tees: spike hyzer, Straight Mid range, TurnOver, Thumber, Low hyzer, skip shot, and 1 turnover mid range.

And I was going to go out to Bass and take your money but the TCU game started at 1:30 so I did not have enough time. I would have beat a 53 for sure. :D

the_kid
Jan 05 2006, 10:09 PM
52 and I was 3 over after the front nine and played one stroke off perfect on the back. I shot -6 the next round though. :D

cgflesner
Jan 05 2006, 10:13 PM
Ouch +3 on the front nine.

2,3,5,7,8,9 are birdie holes right.

the_kid
Jan 05 2006, 10:15 PM
Yeah and I chained out on 2,3,5,6,7,8(for two and took a 4),and 9. but then they actually strted to go in on the back. :DIf half of those would've gone in it would've been a really good round.

the_kid
Jan 05 2006, 10:16 PM
8=525' 9=725 so they aren't birdies. :D

cgflesner
Jan 05 2006, 10:24 PM

my_hero
Jan 05 2006, 10:59 PM
LOL. DS wouldn't have a problem winning it. Anyone that can throw 300' can win this tournament. Too bad that's out of my range. ;) It's pretty much a putting contest with a few trees and small greens.

Matt, you could compare a lot of it to The Old Willy's #1-4.

Hey, don't rob me of the only tournament I ever won!
Tied in first place with Steve King after the first round.
Tied in first place with David Hickok after the second round.
Tied in first place with KT after the third round.
Tied in first place with KT and Kyle Wilkes after the fourth round.
KT tanked the second hole and took third place. "You think I outta go for it?" then slams the first tree off the tee.
Kyle parked hole #3 and I made a 40 footer from behind the tree.
Kyle hit a tree on hole #4 and Pablo PARKED it.
PAYOUT: Barb couldn't figure out how to pronounce my last name so we hear "and winning the advanced division....uhhhh....Paul!"
It may not be on VHS, fellas, but it's been recorded!
Incidentally, that was also the tournament where I paid my PDGA membership dues for the first time. Results, money, etc was never turned in. Thanks you fu**ing thief!

Hey, that's not the best come back ever. Texas States 2002. Sunday morning, 9 strokes off the leader in 9th place. Won the tournament by three strokes. Shot a 51 (997) the last round (Tourney course) to do it. More than likely as close as I'll ever come to a 1000 rated round of golf. But then, my rating has since dropped to 880, so all I have is the glory days, gentlemen. Oh yeah, it ain't about me. :D

dang! something like 135 players, 24 holes with three ghost cards! talk about full! first round cards were finishing between 1:45 and 2:10 and second round to start at 2:30. theres gonna be some night golf!!! :D i couldnt do a second round, still getting over the cold and felt dizzy the whole first round :(. so its couch and football for me after all, and maybe it'll help that awesome turnout get done a few seconds earlier.

i heard a -10 (dan), -9 (justin kerr) in round one, and a -10 in master but i dont know who.

JK also aced #5 long-short with an absolutely perfect straight line z-buzzz run. perhaps the nicest looking ace i've ever seen... it was obvious after 50 feet off the tee.

Yes, a great time was had, no complants about finishing the last 2 holes in the dark. (I even parked short 14)

Plenty of Aleave kept my ankle from bothering me today. It I didn't loose my putter before the 1st round (lost it on my first practice put on #15 in the water) I might have shot a stroke or two better.

Otherwise I was happy with my first Master tournament comming in 3rd (1 stroke from 2nd) and winning $55 :D

Jan 08 2006, 10:35 AM
forthose of you interested in round ratings from PIO, i ran some numbers in the league spreadsheet. i ran it using Open, Open Master, Adv, and Adv Masters.

Round 1:
each stroke worth approximately 8 points:
60....1044
65....1005
70....965
75....925
80....885

Round 2:
each stroke worth approximately 9 points:
56....1050
60....1013
65.....968
70.....922
75.....877
80.....831

you can extrapolate from there.

Wow what a day!!

This event has been growing each year, but I never imagined that we would have (approximate numbers) 2 from Beaumont, 3 from Houston, 3 from College Station, 1 from Live Oak, 2 or 3 from Austin, 3 or 4 from Wichita Falls, and 8 or more from OKC/Norman!!! This event has been primarily a local event until now. It is really cool that you folks got out and traveled, keep it up you will love every minute of it.

I apologize to anyone that was unhappy with the way things played out. I regret putting you all in the position to finish in the dark. I was surprised that very few had to play into the dark, but I am still apologetic. It was a tough lesson. We will start earlier next year, meeting no later than 8:30.

Very cool to see so many new faces! I hope to see everyone at the end of the month. It is going to be off the hook!!

Thanks again to all of the participants, and please pre-register in the future.

Matt Hall has the wrong PDGA number in the ratings. Looks like a killer turnout, and it will be even better next year.

2 from Kansas!

There was a mistake on your card. It was checked by at least 2 people and myself. I think you had a 71 or something, I can't remember. There was far too many people that had that problem yesterday.

Jan 08 2006, 02:49 PM
Then I am responsible for screwing it up..glad it didn't matter in the payout....I just had 2 others check it also, but in the end it is my job to make sure it is right

What a great event Mace...who knew 100+ would make it down..

Glad my Okies of Coda, Joe and TX Danielle were able to enjoy the weekend with us..Nice to shoot with Chris P and bring some more of the Norman family into the game..

Great event...see you at CH...

yeah, it looks like the spreadsheet had the higher rounds a bit too high the middle rounds jkust about right on and the lower rounds a bit low.

thats prolly cuz i only used the ADV and above for the spreadsheet, so some of the lower rated players who shot well (for them) pulled down the top rated rounds.

still not too bad for an approximation. i didnt know they were gonna fix the load issue so fast! duke must have gotten in there and fingered it out :D

Brian,

What a great day of golf!! Even with us finishing right at dark everything went well. Thanks!!

Now, if I can just figure out how to keep from self distructing on 2 holes I may find myself in better shape. From the longs on 1 and 2 I gave up 7 stokes on bad shots into OB. Other than that I played great golf for me. Maybe better luck at CH!! Thanks again!!

Hole #6 gave me a tough time. I made 5s both rounds! And hole 12A just after the bridge; (the little sidearm with the sidewalk looming) could only manage a 3 and a 4 on that one. :( All in all, it was a great day. And with this being my 3rd win in Intermediate since September, I think this was my last Intermediate tournament. I'm moving up!!! Beaumont, in the house! Pleasure Island Feb. 11 Come on out.

Took a Par on #6 from the Pro pad and then decided to try the top anhyzer route from the short pad and knocked myself out with a 6.

Shaine - #2 chewed me up the first round also after heading hard left...another 5

If I could have played a little safer on some of those it would have been great, but I still had one darn good time and it was great to see all the golfers and then take a dozen of them to Hooters afterwards

I watched Coda park #6 long, drop in for a 2. Freak. :)

I took a 3 from the long and then a 6 from the short. Guess the pressure from the top open players helped me. :D

Thanks Brian and crew for the wonderful tournie. I cant believe it went as smoothly as it did with the amount of players and the little time you had to work with.

Thanks Adam and Krell for the hospitality, and throwing over the highway was blast. :D

I seem to consistetly do the same thing. I played somewhat conserative in the first round carding 2 bogeys and and 2 birdies and then those two terrible holes. Then I came out and grinded out a 66 from the shorts. I birdied 3 of the last 6 I played and hit the top of the pan, caught chains and fell out of the other 3, so with a little bit more focus I could have easily birdied out. I guess that is the difference between winning and losing though. Although I can say with a smile that I 3'd 6 both times :D

Two really bad holes and your basically done.

You can't win a tournament in the first round, but you certainly can lose one. I am a prime example.

Now subtract $55 for entry fee $40 for hotel $20 for food and at least $20 for gass and you would be $10 in the hole. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

That's why you get your entry covered and travel with someone that writes off their expenses. :o

Chris, why do you think there are no traveling pro's anymore.

Those that do travel, do it as weekend entertainment. You will loose money in the long run. You may make a little money on one weekend, but unless you get 1/2nd place every weekend, you are going to loose money.

This will be my first tournament in nearly 3 years. I hope I can hit a few more this year.

Speak for yourself buddy. :p

Played Ceader Hill this weekend and the courses look great. All of the questionable tee pads have been redone so there is no steping onto the boxes anymore. Now if Veterans and Crowley could follow suit.

The last forcast I saw called for mid 60's to lower 70's and sunshine.

Panera is making $6 box lunches. They will take your order in the morning and have them waiting for you after the first round. Super convient, you don't have to leave.

Here is the menu:

$6.00 Box lunch

Each box lunch comes with sandwich, chips, pickle, and a cookie.
Please mark each selection with the number of sandwiches.
