Having both courses a couple times, I came back and realized that everyone is posting in the course design forum.

I know these are still being tweaked and will undoubtedly get better so I wanted to start a thread for the new additions to the disc golf arena in Texas. So let's get to posting.

Oh yeah, you start on hole 12 of the Coyote course :D

I didn't do hole assignments, but I've seen this happen at almost every event. Maybe we (the TD's) need to rethink the system of the top Pro card always starting on hole #1 after the 1st round.

Group golf this Saturday at 10:00. Who's in? :D

This is nothing official, just people getting together and playing some golf and having some fun.

I'll open the gate around 9 so I can start getting just a little bit of work done on a couple of areas but then it is all golf, no more work.

Everyone is welcome.

Effective immediately, parking is not allowed along the fence line near hole 2 at Lorch Park.

I had a meeting with the city last night where I learned that they just installed No Parking signs along the roadway on hole 2. There have been several citizen complaints about the amount of cars on the road. The police have been asked to patrol the area and issue citations as needed. Please do not be one of the ones that get a ticket.

Parking is only allowed in the parking lot in the other entrance to the park (to the East). There is a trail that will take you down to the pond from there. I will be out early tomorrow morning to mark it clearly.

This is temporary, at the meeting we were discussing several possibilities to rectify this problem. Funny how it's a problem only because it is too popular, and you better believe that was the point I was stressing to the 12 member committee I was addressing. :D

It has come down to deciding which is the most urgent need. Tee pads and tee signs, or a real parking lot with a fence so we can open the gates daily. Keep in mind, this prioritization is based on the assumption that funding will be available at a later date to complete the projects that get bumped from the budget now. That is a big assumption because nothing in life is guaranteed.

Anyway, don't give up. The city is determined to make this a success and they are working with me to get this resolved. For now, please do not park on the street. There are at least four no parking signs up there and you will get a ticket if you ignore them.

I'll let you all know the outcome as I know it.

Brian

P.S. Don't forget about group golf tomorrow at 10:00. I will open the gate around 8:30 or 8:45 but will need to lock it when I leave much later in the day.

Joey, I played all 36 holes last night. And yes, those 4 are still a mess. :(

The rest of the course plays great with the exception of a couple of small roots beginning to appear on a couple of tee pads. Be careful until I have time to dig them up.

The city and I have agreed on a fence design and price for the lower parking lot. :D

The only delay is while awaiting the county's approval on it. We do not expect any issues. Hopefully we will have that very soon.

Once installed, the gates will be open to the public during daylight hours. This is a very good thing.

I can name all my Tarrant County commissioners, but we all know only one Dallas County commissioner. Who are the other ones that seem to favor us? I've been thinking of sending a thank you note. It is always good to inform elected officials when they do something you like. You can be sure every elected official hears the complaints. They need to hear how much we appreciate what they did for us, too.
By the way, thanks again, Brian for all you have done to get Lorch Park where it is and where is going to be.

bslamoreaux
Mar 04 2005, 02:20 PM
Laura, I am not important enough to actually speak with a Court member. The person I deal with is the woman that has been seen at Lorch Park checking up on our work. She has been great. She reports directly to the Court, specifically, to Mr Price.

Ive go good, check that, great news! The city will start building the new fence around the lower parking lot next week. :D Once completed, the gates will be opened during daylight hours for casual use. This is huge!

This did not come without some sacrifice; my plan of two tee pads for every hole has been reduced to one pad. I might be able to get a couple of additional pads on certain holes but that will be limited. I wanted to make sure the park was open for everyone to enjoy first. I will focus on additional needs later.

Anyway, enjoy the parking lot. Hopefully it will be open for the first time on March 26th.

I'll clarify after reading that, you won't need LONG pants ;).

HAHA.. Still have to wear pant. I get poison ivy very easy  Today, I went there to play with friends. David Howell aced 8th hole on coyote course. He is 51 yrs old! I hit the chain on hole 5th on beaver. :D

Both great shots to get to the bucket :D. Hole 8 on the Coyote is playing from the short pad to the short pin placement, look around while you are on the Coyote course (behind the pads and past the pins) and you will seee the potential that we have out there. Hole 5 on the Beaver is one of my favorite holes due to the scenery and the fact that if you don't hit your line you have a situation on your hands :D.

Hope to see you out there for one of the minis.

Someone mentioned to me that there was a way to have a championship setup which combined both of the courses. Maybe a par 72 type layout. Is this true? If so, how is it and will there be any tourneys using that layout?

my_hero
Mar 24 2005, 05:56 PM
Yessir. It's one hole. Tee off from the Coyote #12, and finish on #2's basket on the Beaver. Should take about 72 shots. :)

1: B1T - B1P par 3
2: B2T - B4P par 3
3: B6T - B7P par 4 (or B5T, wouldnt matter too much)
4: B8T - C17P par 3
5: C17T - C14P par 4
6:
7:
8:
9:
10: C10T - C11P par 4
11: C12T - C13P par 5 (even possible ?????)
12: C14T - C15P par 4
13: C16T - C18P par 3 (problem crossing #4)
14: C1T - B8P par 4 (and use B9P for long, par 6???)
15: B10T - B11P par 4
16: B12T - B13P par 5
17: B14T - B15P par 3
18: B16T - B18P par 4 (or tee from the turtle)

that 53 strokes for 14 holes
having some trouble linking coyote's holes, so if you have ideas feel free...

This might be playable.

There's a couple of really tight connections.

1: B1T - B2P par 5 (Across the road is OB until you reach the parking lot at the top of the hill)
2: B3T - B4P par 4
3: B5T - B5P par 3
4: B6T - B7P par 4
5: B8T - B9P par 4
6: B10T - B11P par 4
7: B13T - B14P Par 4
8: B15T - C2P par 5
9: C3T - C5P Par 5
10: C6T - C8P par 5
11: C9T - C9P par 3
12: C10T - C11P par 5
13: C12T - C12P par 3
14: C13T - C14P par 4
15: C15T - C16P par 4
16: C17T - C18P par 4
17: C1T - B17P par 5
18: B18T - B18P par 3

Par 74.

gnduke
Mar 25 2005, 01:11 AM
I don't think the map is online.

If I have skecthed the course out right it will work.

Beaver course:
Hole 1: Play hole 1 up and across the parking lot to 2s pin.
Hole 2: Tee from 3 around the corner down hill to 4s basket.
Hole 3: Play 5 just to get to 6's tee.
Hole 4: Tee from 6 to 7's basket. A long way through the trees.
Hole 5: Tee from 8 to 9's basket. Over water on the drive, then layup and over water on the approach, or risk a long second shot over water.
Hole 6: Tee from 10 to 11's basket, long lightning bolt of a hole.
oops, Holes 7 and 8 were wrong before
Hole 7: From 14's tee to 15's basket. Skip 12 and 13 completely.
Hole 8: From 16's tee to Coyote 2's basket. (might have to settle for 1's basket).

Coyote course:
Hole 9: Tee 3, past the basket and left down 5's fairway.
Hole 10: Tee 6, past the basket to the last half of 7's fairway, past the basket to the last half of 8's fairway to 8's basket.
Hole 11: Regular hole 9
Hole 12: Tee 10 to 11's basket. Hard left trun into a tight tunnel.
Hole 13: regular hole 12
Hole 14: Tee 13 out of the woods and right down the hill to 14's basket.
Hole 15: Tee 15 to 16's basket.
Hole 16: 17's tee to 18's basket.
Hole 17: Tee 1 to Beaver 17's basket. Careful crossing players on Hole 5 (Beaver 8).

Beaver Course:
Hole 18: Regular 18.

Brian L has a great safari layout (I deleted the PM :( with it in it) already worked out. Once people become a little more accustomed to the layout of each course we'll start using that in the rotation of the Saturday minis.

I'll be out at Lorch tomorrow around 12:45 if you want a guided tour Pizza. Right now the courses are not marked very well, so if it's your first time there it can be a little confusing.

not too shabby! here's some comments:

Beaver course:
Hole 1: Play hole 1 up and across the parking lot to 2s pin.
regular hole 1 is better. even a three past regular 1';s basket does not yield a par 5 if you play on to 2's basket. too long.

Hole 2: Tee from 3 around the corner down hill to 4s basket.
nice enuf, but play frm 2's tee if you agree with my note above.

Hole 3: Play 5 just to get to 6's tee.
hmmmm...

Hole 4: Tee from 6 to 7's basket. A long way through the trees.
good hole. also could play from 5's tee and avoid having to play regular hole 5.

Hole 5: Tee from 8 to 9's basket. Over water on the drive, then layup and over water on the approach, or risk a long second shot over water.
yes, a very nice hole.

Hole 6: Tee from 10 to 11's basket, long lightning bolt of a hole.
another classic.

oops, Holes 7 and 8 were wrong before
[*****]!

Hole 7: From 14's tee to 15's basket. Skip 12 and 13 completely.
yep. good solid par 4 with birdie potential

Hole 8: From 16's tee to Coyote 2's basket. (might have to settle for 1's basket).
using C2P is downright wrong. how many 4's and 5's were there on those one from C2T-C2P? add 3-4 throws just to get to C2T and you have a par 7! gott aplay to C1P, but then its nuttin more than D.

Coyote course:
Hole 9: Tee 3, past the basket and left down 5's fairway.
maybe, but needs some roughage work

Hole 10: Tee 6, past the basket to the last half of 7's fairway, past the basket to the last half of 8's fairway to 8's basket.
more roughage work

Hole 11: Regular hole 9
prolly OK on a par72+ course.

Hole 12: Tee 10 to 11's basket. Hard left trun into a tight tunnel.
yes, this one is nice!

Hole 13: regular hole 12
too bad. would be nice to do something with this part of the course.

Hole 14: Tee 13 out of the woods and right down the hill to 14's basket.
ok... even a possible three i think, likely par4

Hole 15: Tee 15 to 16's basket.
works ok, but not very interesting

Hole 16: 17's tee to 18's basket.
not much more than a longrer 17 is it?

Hole 17: Tee 1 to Beaver 17's basket. Careful crossing players on Hole 5 (Beaver 8).
works well enough

Beaver Course:
Hole 18: Regular 18.
boring finish to a potentially great layout. i'd strongly prefer teeing from left of the turtle.

the thickness of the back part of the coyote really crimps linking up that part of the course. that'll change soon enough. some creativity with the potentially crossing fairways around B16P, C1T, C18P, C16P is needed on both of our designs.

why? a "safari" layout is not necessarily a great par 72 layout! there's lots of ways to build cool safari holes at Lorch. but as we're discovering from our little exercise, there's some real challenges in working 18 good holes into it.

here's my thoughts on par values for your layout:

1: 5 (and an awfully difficult 5 at that. more like 8's and 9's waiting to happen)
2: 4
3: 3 (still say its lame tho :) )
4: 4
5: 4
6: 4
7: 4
8: 4 (gotta play to C1P)
9: 4 (cant quite picture this one, so tell me if its a 5)
10: 5 (?)
11: 3
12: 4
13: 3
14: 4
15: 3 (or an easy par 4)
16: 3
17: 4
18: 3

par: 68
maybe a couple of those could be legitimately raised... 17 (especially in the new long P position), 15, 10, 9 ?

gnduke
Mar 25 2005, 02:23 PM
H 9: Perfect golf (about 250' per throw)
1 shot to clear the tunnel.
Shot 2 should give you a look at 5's fairway. a great shot can see 5's basket.
Shot 3 should get you to close range (2 shot range).

Depends on how you count par. Close + 2 or projected average.

gnduke
Mar 25 2005, 02:29 PM
H 1: there are no par 6s.
H 10: Beyond hole 6s basket by about 100' you connect to the last third of the fairway of hole 7. Turn right, 200' or so puts you in the middle of hole 8's fairway. Turn left 175' or so to the basket.

1 shot to get near 6s basket.
Shot 2 carries to 7s fairway.
Shot 3 if it gets through clean, it could be within 150' of the basket.
that's 2 shot range.

I think hole 1 to 2's basket could be a par 5 but I think it would be an easy par 5. Seems close between hard par 4 and easy par 5. I could see 3 on there with 2 very good shots. Roller out to the right side of fairway, then a big hyzer to the bucket.

WOW, what can I say, it was a GREAT day to play disc golf today, light wind and a cool 75 timp.

What I like about courses are defined fairways and reachable holes for most of them.

This course is the best course I have played in a long time and could one of my favorates i have ever played.

The only hole I could not reach was #1 (Beaver). I still need to get a 3 on that hole.

If it were not for a stupid 5 on #2 on the Wooden course, I would have shot 2 under on both. (shot even on Wood and 2 down on Beaver)

There are several classic holes that I thought were great.

#17 off the Dam was cool, I just missed my birdie put from my first drive and almost aced it with my second drive.

#16 on the beaver course had a great fairway.

#14 and #16? (long hole up the hill) were both fun to play and great holes. (I just missed my bird putts on both)

nothing like being 20ft out and have little or no shot at several of the holes.

I luckly never got deap in the shule, it would have been bad if i did. Almost every shot i had was on or just off the fairway all day.

Like I said, I was like a kid in a candy store today.

I can't wait to get back there next Saturday.

Oh yea, one more thing, it was great to see 20 cars in the parking lot when I pulled in. You could not hear anything out there but birds and chains. It was great.

Brian,
If I play at Lorch on Thursday (5-ish), where do you suggest we park at? Will the gate be open or should we park at the first lot?

By the way, good match last Wednesday, and thanks for the couple of bucks in payout. If I ever play again for plastic at the mini's, I'll give you my leftovers. I'm gonna try to play open, but we'll see how it goes!

Thanks,

Played both courses again on Saturday with some of the STD'ers and had another great time. Courses are naturally getting some trails from use and it is becoming easier to get that errant throw - sometimes

#17 Beaver on the long was SWEET! Watts was about 2ft from hitting it.

Derek, the gate at Lorch Park is open from dawn till dusk now. So parking in the new parking lot shouldn't be a problem.

You've got the ability to play open. Go for it!

You coming to the mini at The Vet tomorrow?

Thanks Brian, if I can be there tomorrow, I will play open. Hopefully the wind isnt as nuts! If I could get all three parts of the game in sync (i.e. show up at the same time), I have no doubts that I could play in open (maybe not compete, but play respectably), I just need my drive and putt to both show up, and if needed, the upshot too. Well definitely enjoy our round at CH on Thursday, and maybe on Saturday well come play the mini. Which course is used or are both? 9 am, right? Thanks again.

Derek, I usually don't decide on the course until I see the conditions as rain makes the beaver all wet and sloppy :D. Sorry I just couldn't resist.

The Cedar Hill mini's are Saturdays at 3:00.

BTW - There is a "C" tier at the mighty Z this Saturday. It benefits the Junior Disc Golf Foundation. I hope there is a big participation base for that event with a great cause. The people that can go play this should do it. For everyone else out there, come on down to Cedar Hill for some fun.

I know about the JDGF event, and I don't know if I can make it either due to the time (all day) or $. ($45 for advanced!). I would like to play, and don't mind the money, but we'll see if I have the time. If not, I'll be playing in the morning until noon or so, and Cedar Hill is a great place to do that!

I didn't find any discs on the coyote, but I found a sweet, broken in Orc with no name on it on the Beaver. The thing threw so far, it was awesome!

As for the courses, they look incredible. The mowing and everything is in FANTASTIC shape. Even the sloppy holes are okay (well, except for putting on 5). I shot pretty well there yesterday, -2 on Beaver, and +3 on Coyote. Missed too many birdie putts and didn't hit good lines on Coyote. I'm hoping to get to play them again tomorrow since I can't make the JDGF event on Saturday. I love these courses!!!

Come on out tomorrow for the mini. People are going to have to get used to the water on 5 'cuz we are playing the beaver course tomorrow unless major rain falls tonight.

Don't think I can make the mini at 3 this weekend. I try to play Saturday mornings when not in tourneys so I can get stuff done. I have lots of yard work, cleaning, and probably some work work also. Weren't the mini's around 9 at one point?

PS I really like the longer hole 17 Beaver hole. I threw an Orc right at that sucker. I birdied that one and hole 10 for the first time ever. Gotta get back out there! I have never shot under par on both on the same day. Some day...

I snuck down there Thursday to play, the course had been mowed recently.

Several trees have been pruned.

I had a very easy 3 on #1 for the first time. Those branches being gone made the hole MUCH easier.

I did manage to shoot -3 on Beaver with no bogies

I shot -1 on Coyote with two bogies and one very narly double.

The cleaning up of low hanging limbs on the open holes made those easier. I parked 6 and had a 50ft putt on 7 (missed).

now if someone would just clean out all the briar patches in the park and spray for poison ivy (dang legs itch as I type) :D

OK. My arms are like jello today.

I spent a couple of hours working on the park last night.

Hole 12 on the beaver should be a little more enjoyable now. It may, or may not look like it, but I took down a bunch of high hanging vines and cleared a few branches with the pole saw. That thing gets heavy after a while...

I also took the pole saw to a couple of tee pads to get rid of some small stumps that were appearing in the ground and continued working on the alternate sleeve for hole 17 on the Coyote. I was getting close to finishing when I ran out of gas. Maybe this weekend I can finish it and move the basket for a little while.

Spoke with a few first timers to the park. I love seeing new people out there. Especially since they almost always love it there.

Brian I am loving these two courses more and more every time I play them. Maybe that's because my score drops every time! I shot -6 on the Coyote and -5 on the Beaver, finishing with a 2 (parked) on 18 Beaver! What are the records for each? Last time I heard, -10 was the Coyote best, and -8 was the Beaver best. Of course that was tourney play, and I'm not sure what pro scores have been shot casually since then...

#14 on the Beaver just plain SUCKS. A 180 hole that was the only one to ruin a bogey-free round. Same thing with 10 on the Coyote, although that was a risk shot. A roller is a good shot on that hole...if you make sure it stands up!

I can't wait until the TX10 comes through there this year.

May 12 2005, 12:48 AM
Those records are correct, I believe.

I have been trying to take that record down on the front course but my best is 47, so far. I like hole 13 on that course. Just play it like the shortest par 4 in the world. :D

My least favorite hole on the course is 12 on the front. Some of my worst drives have parked it and my best hit one of the 3 trees that are evenly spread across the gap. I really think 1 of those should be taken down. It wouldn't really make the hole easier, just a lot more fair. Lucky shots can still get through some other gaps but at least that gives you about 6' of room to aim for.

Thanks for the good words guys. And just think, were not done with them yet.

The Beaver course is still going to be getting some alternate sleeves put in the ground and The Coyote course is still going to get longer, a little more open and, of course, alternate sleeves.

The number plates have come in, thanks to Jason, and the city has agreed to put them on the baskets for me.

In the very near future we need to have another work day to get some of that additional clearing done and to start marking the tees better so we can install the concrete pads.

Once all of that is done, we'll get some tee signs made and put in.

This place is only going to get better...... :D

Don't forget to come out for the Saturday mini at 3:00.

No mini on the 21st. Everyone needs to go play the A - Z Doubles at ZBOAZ and The Vet. Myself included if I can find a babysitter and a partner.

Later,
Brian

P.S. Danny, have you seen the long sleeve for hole 9 yet? It isn't playable yet but the sleeve is in the ground. It measures out to just over 300' from the pad going over the beaver dam and through the trees to the clearing behind the current pin placement. Way cool!

dannyreeves
May 12 2005, 11:23 AM
Oops, I meant hole 12. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

And yeah I saw where the long 9 will be. That looks like it will be a great hole. I love holes that have risk-reward. That is a hole that almost anyone can 3 everytime if they lay up, but going for it can be really good or really bad. :D

bslamoreaux
May 12 2005, 01:29 PM

bslamoreaux
May 12 2005, 02:08 PM
Gary - how much longer do you think 12 is going to get? :)

13 might have an alternate, longer tee. It depends on the use of the terrain and exactly where the 12 basket ends up going. I have a pretty good idea where it will be but have not been in that deep part of the trees in a while and might change it up some more.

Did they go to Marine Creek Lake off of 820? I know Gary went to go fly fish that Lake on Sunday and he said as he was leaving at 9am that a lot of high dollar trailers were pulling up, and the parking lot was closed to the public as he left. I know they hold a large event there once or twice a year.

The wakeboarding was GREAT!!! To see those guys doing the stuff they can do is just amazing. I mean I wakeboard, wakeskate more, but I am far, VERY FAR from the level these guys are. The boarding was great, got to see a couple of newly landed tricks, a couple of 900s, , couple of attempts at a 1080, a kickflip from the wakeskate guys, met some nice people from all over, it was a fun weekend. **** HOT THOUGH!!!!

We came up early on friday to play a course in the area of our hotel, Z boaz was the closest. Plus I had asked on an earlier thread which would be the best and closest in the area Zboaz was the answer I got. It was a fun course, a lot tighter than what we are use to out here in the land of the mesquite, but the elevation, and all made it a lot of fun. I would like to play it again now that I know the layout better.
