It wouldn't be proper for me to post it here. Besides. His PM was filled with useful information. Some of which I had already been planning, some I hadn't even considered yet. Before you worry about his ideas, why dont you give me some of you suggestions. Just to clarify, the suggestions should deal directly with course construction and pin placements, not with something plucked from your overly active imagination....

That is an excellent point. One of my pet peves (on any course), is an up hill teepad. I think that all teebads should be level, no matter what the slope of the hole is.

By all means, lets take care of Reeve's peves..... Couldn't resist.
The pad doesn't slope. The size of the pad will not change but I have asked the city to grade the ground around the pad a little better. This might include a small brick wall as well as some grass sod.
There are several pads on each course the will be getting longer/wider.

may be we could get something that is badly needed in disc golf started at Cedar Hill -- day care. If all those with kids took turns watching the others' kids play with their own, perhaps we could have more disc golf families playing minis without anyone (including the women) being stuck with the kids all the time. It's just an idea. Thought I'd throw it out and see what ya'll think. It seems there are a bunch of disc golfer's kids that are around the same age, either 2-3 year-olds or 0-12 month olds. I think it would be great for the kids, great for the parents, and great for the future of disc golf.

Good post, Laura.
I'd be happy to vounteer as part of a rotating group of caregivers (as soon as we move in June).
Since the hard part of disc daycare is getting someone consistently every week, perhaps a few moms and dads or older siblings can sit out one out of every eight weeks and
take care of the younger ones.
Parents with kids to be watched can be charged $1, so at least the caregiver gets breakfast out of the deal.
This would work best if there is usually more than one or two kids to be watched - and more than one or two caregivers.

Lots of stuff going on in Cedar HIll these days.
First off, NO MINI THIS WEEK. It's Christmas Eve. Spend that time with your family, that's what I'm going to do. If it was a morning mini, we would still play, but since we don't leave until after dark, lets wait until January 7th to start them back up again. Please spread the word to those that dont read the board.
Next hole 9 on the beaver is longer. Be watching for the new rope line to mark the OB (where the water used to be) along the right side.
Hole 5 on the Coyote is getting longer as well. At least as soon as I can break through the next 5 inches of rock so I can set the sleeve. If anyone has a pick axe and wants to take a few minutes working on it, go for it! I've spent hours out there over the course of the last few days clearing and digging. This hole is going to be great.
Next to be attacked is hole 4.
Since I want to get some more pin placements in before the Big Show, I'd like to have a work day soon. Please PM me if you would be able to help out on an upcoming weekend.
Thanks,
Brian

Thanks to Joe Martin and our dueling Pole Saws, hole 5 Coyote has a new pin position. The city has offered to poor the sleeve this morning so I can move the basket on Friday. They will be down there anyway adding some length to many existing tee pads and completely re-building the pad on 8 Beaver... :D:D
Joe and I finshed the hole with about 4 - 5 hours of sawing and then moving the fallen limps out of the way. I think it will be a great long pin position for that hole as it adds another 80+ feet and turns it into a nice dogleg right. Good luck getting your birde on this one now.

Cedar Hill is only getting better.......
The city made many tee pads longer and they have begun building a bunch of retaining walls. Everything looks great. Of course a few people couldn't control themselves and just had to write in the wet concrete. I actualy witnessed some and then helped them fix their art work.
In one case, I arrived soon after three large/deep footprints were left in a pad. I was able to pick up some still wet over-flow concrete and fill it in and smooth out the pad.
I'm going to have to cut down a tree or two on Coyote 18 as they put the pad extension to the front instead of to the back as requested. That first tree has to go and maybe the second tree as well.
Still no tee signs but they are in the works.
Man this place is getting better all the time.

I am. I've got several "ace race" and "disc golf in the oaks" aces but nothing from concrete. A couple of splashes and poles but nothing that stays in the basket.
My problem is that I tend to aim for the base of the pole on holes I can reach so I can get that drop-in birdie. I really need to start running at more chances since my putting has gotten so much better. Time to step it up I guess.
jeterdawg
Jan 10 2006, 10:50 AM
Brian, you should do what I do - just try to park your shot like you normally do, but on holes where you need to throw a good hyzer, aim the skip so that if you hit your shot just right, it has a chance to skip up into the basket. 3 of my last 4 aces have been that way. The other one is the only other ace I'd legitimately run at-- (although I'm never really "running" for the ace) is a hole that is on an uphill slope. #6 short at Veteran's is the perfect example. I throw a midrange (Roc) on a hyzer line, and aim to come down right at the basket. If it misses by a couple of feet in any direction, it lands within 5' of the basket. I got lucky the last time it was on the short and it went right in.
You'll get that first ace...but if you keep moving Coyote baskets you won't!!!
BTW, I've got those pics for you, but I don't think I can send them via email since there are 40-50 and they're about 1 MB a piece. I'll put them on a CD and keep it in my golf bag.

Adam, it's hole 5 that moved long. I birdied it for the first time yesterday. Of course I threw five tee shots and only that one gave me a real chance for it.
Joe, yes he is talking about the hole before the flag. I have been quilty of throwing the local route as well without realizing how close a shot could get to the next tee pad. I will have to think about that one some more.
I spent all day out there yesterday getting a bunch of work done. Because people will tend to step on the brick walls (see above), I glued the top row of the retaining walls. Plus I worked the pole saw for what felt like forever. I'm way to tired to be at work today. :D

Brian,
Matt Savage and I got out there Sunday and played both courses. WOW!! I played the Beaver last January, but had never seen the Coyote. Man can that course really stick it to you.
Just our of curosity; are we going to play the same holes on both courses both days at the Big Show or will we be playing some of the alternate pins placements on both courses.
I just want to be prepared. I felt good about my +4 on the Coyote since I had never seen the course before and I was +2 on the beaver with 4 birdies and as many missed 25 ft putts.
I want to get out and play the other locations if they will be moved?

Brian,
Make #13 a mando between the crooked tree and the shule on right. That would be SWEET...like a clown's mouth hole, and would eliminate the problem with #14's teepad.
Shaine,
There are not many alternate pin positions yet, so I wouldn't worry about how different the course would get. Both courses are on the toughest layout so far, so if you've played them like they are now, you're fine.

It doesn't need to be that extreme. All he needs to do, FOR SAFETY, is put a mando on the tree that people are going outside of, and force them to the left of it.

On the Beaver (front), #13 is the ridiculously hard ~190-foot hole that has a thick, leaning tree in front of the teebox, and the hole is off to the right on a small hill. There is a small hole that someone could throw a crazy hyzer or forearm anhyzer through, but it has a chance at landing near the next teebox (the hole with the big Texas flag in the tree). I always play that hole as a par 3 and hope that I only have a 50-foot upshot/putt at it.
my_hero
Jan 17 2006, 01:05 PM
13 on the Beaver is the "Hook" hole. People are throwing towards 14's fairway(flag/cedar tree) through a tiny slot in a tree just off of 13's pad.
If you are on 14's tee, or in 14's fairway, BE SURE TO WEAR YOUR HARD HAT. :D

Sorry John, but I have to disagree. That "gap" may be somewhat big, but I know plenty of non-pro's that hit one of the first trees and it kicks into the trees on either the left or right. At that point, you need to throw to somewhere around the bottom of the hill the basket is on just to save your 4. That may seem easy to do, but I always see people getting 4's and 5's (sometimes 6's), and playing it the way it was designed. Since it's a lefty hole, I can see why trying to take the "designed route" still can get you a bad score.
I used to throw a forehand, but now I throw a putter and try to land at the bottom of the hill. That hole has broken 2 or 3 bogeyless rounds for me... It's a great hole, and I always feel better about that 3 than any 2 on the course, except for maybe on hole 10 or a couple others.

You'll NEVER take worse than a 4 if you go the way the hole was desinged.

I guess i should have said that you have to be really unlucky to get worse than a 4.

How much shorter is the coyote course? We couldn't find anyone who knew where all the holes were.

There is no way that a disc could reach the other tee box in my opinion. Maybee the path, but 40feet right of the pin is the closest I have come to the next tee pad.
And if you can't beat them join them. :D

That's why it's called an opinion.
Too bad you weren't on the card with Nolan, Lamoreaux, and myself last Saturday when not one, but TWO different people's drives landed 15' from us(on 14's tee pad.)
The problem will only get worse if it isn't taken care of now. As people keep trying that shot, the hole will get larger. People of lesser skill level will then start trying it b/c they see other players doing it. Before you know it, it will be raining discs on 14's tee.

Lamoreaux,
I know the Coyote has, but has the Beaver course ever given up a Saturday ace pot? (Surely someone has taken the ace pot by hitting hole #9 before it had a long position)
Have you ever thought about running two different ace pots, one for the Beaver, and one for the Coyote?
I think it would be interesting to see how large the Beavers would build, and how quick the Coyote's would go. :D

Check out what Brenner has done with Google Maps/Earth.

Click "use a stored layout", then click "Beaver", then "get map", then satellite view, then zoom to see how close the basket and tee pad really are.
The mando will probably go into effect any day now. In fact, i have the steel pole for the " <------ " sign that is on order.

It's obvious that BL intended that hole to be played in a way that the "gap" route was never even considered. Frankly, it'd be better if it wasn't even there. Assuming that's the case, I think it's a pretty darn good hole. Challenging and rewarding if you can throw a disc straight and accurately.
I'd make an argument that players (knowing that the hole was intended that way), who take that crazy route, are no better than players who cut down a branch because it was in the way of a route they like to take. Yeah, you're not taking a chainsaw to it, but the gap gets bigger every time someone barely misses it and branches fall off in the process. Eventually, you have a gap anyone can hit, and the hole loses its luster.
I guess we'll see what happens once the mando sign is in place. If you truly appreciate the sport and the course, let alone the effort put in by the designer, you'd play the hole the correct way. I'm just glad a mando sign is going in establishing what is the "correct" way.

John, the ace pot has only been hit once. Charles Cox knocked down an ace on Beaver Hole 12. No other Saturday "mini" aces have been hit. For now at least, I'll keep one ace pot.

Just to clarify, no the basket is not moving for this weekend and no this is not a reaction to the mando suggestion. I have always planned on making a longer pin position that forces you to stay left of those first trees. I will clear it and drop the bucket hopefully within the next month. That's when the lack of a mando wont affect the play of the hole.
There is no mando, or alternate pin postion, for this weekend.

No matter where you put the new basket, people are going to try to aviod throwing through the trees by throwing over the top. Any disc that is thrown through that tiny upper gap potentially could end up in 14's fairway or on top of 14's box. Admit that it's a SAFETY ISSUE by putting up a mando....just like hole#4. It was extremely dangerous watching people throw down the street. I might have to notify the city. :DI still love you man...can i have your last bud light? :p

Brian, the new number plates look good. But I bet someone still figures out how to break it off.
Is there any plans on putting a longer pin position on #1 Beaver. You can put that basket all the way to the fence. The tree there would make you have to throw over the top of up the middle. That would be a true par 4 or 5.
Beaver #9, how about another pin position even further down that clearing on the left of the basket. That would make that hole a true par 4.
I have enjoyed playing the courses the last 2 days. it is a great course.

Hole #1 is perfect where it is. I took a 6 the 1st time a played it and hit basket for a two the 2nd time. The scoring spread is already good and all moving it back would do is eliminate 3s.
I played the Coyote for the first time today. That course will eat you up! /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif I scored a 60 on it. I guess thats not bad for my first round ever on that course.

I pulled the string a few weeks ago.
I'm playing for a couple of reasons. The main one being I have to leave for a business trip to Vegas on Monday and I'm going to have to leave the park during a couple of the rounds to finish some work stuff up before I go. That propbably is a good thing as I think I've done something to my right wrist. Maybe too much manual labor for this desk designed body. It sucks that it doesn't help much asking most people to please put trash where it goes. I would think that maybe putting more information like that on tee signs might be a good idea, but it probably wouldn't help either. I think these three things should be posted on ALL tee signs on every course:
1. Please do not damage the course. This includes breaking limbs, branches, and other natural obstacles that make the course challenging and unique. Believe it or not, some people enjoy playing on a course that does not feature 18 treeless, wide-open holes.
2. Please do not litter on the course. This includes beer bottles (since the park is alcohol-free), cigarettes (since burn-bans are in full effect), and condoms (since no one wants to see you using one while on the course). If you absolutely must litter since there are never enough trash cans on the course, and you never bring a trash bag with you, please leave your trash next to a tee sign. Someone who cares greatly for this sport will have a trash bag, and will pick up after you because they are a truly good person.
3. [When an upcoming tournament is approaching on the course or nearby courses] The entire course [or nearby course] will be unavailable for play on xx/xx/xxxx due to a competitive disc golf tournament. Players will be starting on every hole, thus the course will be full and play very slowly. If you are interested in playing, we are sure you will enjoy the experience of competitive disc golf. There is no better way to learn than from those who have already learned the sport themselves. If you must play disc golf on that particular day(s), and you are not interested in competing in the tournament, please visit other nearby courses, where you'll find there is not as much wait. Visit the Professional Disc Golf Association's website at www.pdga.com (http://www.pdga.com) and check the Course Directory for nearby courses.
These are the three biggest problems I see with casual golfers...because they are either uninformed or don't care to be informed of them. At least having them printed where there are 18 or so chances that they are read would eliminate that most people never had the chance to read them.
