OK Frank, baby update.... Baby looks awesome. He's getting some color to him now so he's not just a big white ball of fluff. He is big. Very cool.
While checking on Frank's baby, I was able to install all 36 hole numbers to the number plates. The Beaver course has bright red stickers covering the entire 8 inch diameter of the number plate with huge white numbers on them. The Coyote course is using orange stickers with white numbers. The people on the course yesterday really liked them.
Getting closer to completion..... :D
Oh, I also put orange reflective stickers around the pole inside the chains to act as a putting aid for most of the holes. I forgot I had them while doing the other stickers. I started putting them on at hole 10 of The Beaver course. I'll get holes 1 - 9 done as soon as possible. All of the Coyote course is done.

Lots of good stuff going on in Cedar Hill.
Nunmber plates and stickers are on and look good. The city if going to hit the backs of them with rustoleum. Red stickers on the front course and orange stickers on the back.
Had a meeting with the city about the tee pads this week. They are going to get the materials and install them for us 9 at a time. The first nine might start next week. :D
This is great news. Once the 36 pads are down, and the tee signs and rest of the alternate sleeves are in the ground, I will meet with the city again to discuss the balance of the budget. If enough remains, I'll have them to start installing alternate pads on the holes that it makes the most sense.
This place is going to rock.

Pads 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 are in the ground....!!!! :)
Some "person", and I use the term lightly. may have just cost us the city's support.
Someone, according to the description from the city, did a lot of damage to the #8 tee pad. You know, the one that was poured yesterday. They wrote all kinds of stuff in the concrete and dropped rocks into it. The rocks stick up enough to be a hazard. Of course it has dried now and is not repairable. People suck!
These pads are being put in by the city to help us, disc golfers. Disc golfers were obviously the ones that damaged the pad and now the city is trying to decide if they even want to help us any longer.
Please, if you happen to be at the park on days that the city is using their resources to help us by pouring pads, tell people to leave the pads alone until they dry.
Just ridiculous... :(

Jun 17 2005, 12:18 PM
That is horrible news.
Cedar Hill has been so very, very good to disc golf. What can be done to repair the pad? Perhaps if a bunch of disc golfers get together to correct the damage, the city will see that although we can't stop bad things from happening occasionally, we are not bad people and will still support us.
Support the likes of Cedar Hill has not been seen anywhere else. Live Oak is the only place that comes close. I know it's Father's Day weekend and hot weather, but can we get several people together tomorrow morning to fix whatever was done?
bslamoreaux
Jun 17 2005, 12:45 PM
No need for crew just yet. I'm supposed to talk to the city again later today and I'll go out to the park tonight to inspect the damage myself.
The city is very understranding in the regards of accepting that we/I can't be held responsible for the actions of a handful of people. They were just very upset to find this damage after they had already spent three full days getting to this point. He felt that if their work was not appreciated, why should they do any more to help. I understand his thoughts on that one.
We will see what happens, but I'm pretty sure that if any more pads are damaged before they finsh drying, they wont do any more for us.

It has taken me a long time to develop my relationship with the city. I'd hate for something like this affect it. They have been awesome.

Just writing a small saying in the corner of a pad is not as big a deal as writing sayings all over the pad and dropping big rocks into the wet cement and leaving them there to dry.

if it is something that makes the tee unusable, then i have a hard time believing that a disc golfer did the damage. if it is hole #8, that is where many non disc golfers like to fish. maybe this was a statement by them, or possibly by one of the homeowners in the area trying to sabotage the course's reputation with the city?

i've seen it. may or may not have been a golfer, they made a peace sign with golf ball size rocks and their initials W.S.P. with the same size rocks on the back and left side of the box also spelled out with a stick the 420 logo and it looks like a last name of KELLUM also they wrote BALLS OUT 8.
it looks pretty [I'm a potty-mouth!] so congrats to whoever belongs to those initials.
the city was there when shari and i were out there this evening he seemed a lot calmer about it told us the schedule for finishing the rest of the pads. but brian is right anymore damage and they probaly will quit. you can tell that they are not just throwing these pads down. they are nice and level and just well done. although a little short on some. so no more dumb azzes and or retards please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This seams to be a common problem the solution is very time consuming for us golfers who are adults now. If I happen to catch anyone I will tie them to a tree and call CHPD!

Brian - we noticed some bigger tee-pad forms later into the course that were not poured...will the size of the pads be changed later into the course?
That first group is pretty short.
Holes 3, 4, 5 and 7 are shorter than 1 and 6. Holes 5 and 7 were supposed to be longer than they are. I'll see if the budget will allow us to make them longer once the rest of pads have been poured. Tee pad size is dictated by three things, overall $ budget, the city remembering and executing my wishes and then the overall length of the hole. Holes 10, 15, 16 and 17 will have the longest of the pads to be still be poured while the rest will have shorter pads. On pads where people might be starting their run-up behind the pad it will be flush with the ground to keep it safe. I personally start my run up behind many of the pads at Veterans and didn't have a problem with it. Pads the length of Lake Lewisville's would have had too big of an impact on the budget.
Keep in mind that everyone has a different idea on how long a tee pad should be based on their own approach style. I'm trying to accomodate as long of a tee pad as we can while sitll maintaining a budget to complete the installation of the tee signs, remaining alternate sleeves, message board and other issues the pop up (like maybe needing to extend the parking lot fence).
Hope this helps people to understand what I'm working with.
BTW - spoke with the city Friday night and again this morning already. They will be in the park all day today digging and leveling the forms for the rest of the front course. The pads should be poured tomorrow. (He was in a much more understanding and better mood this morning than he was Friday morning.)

Adam, your welcome for the information. The park has come a long way and will only continue to get better.
The city was supposed to pour up to 10 more pads today. I'm leaving work early and will be at the park for a few hours this evening making adjustments to pads the will hopefully be poured next week. And simply being there hopefully will help keep people out of the wet cement.
I have requested that the city extend the pads on holes 3, 5 and 7 once the rest of the pads have been poured. They poured those as 8 X 6 pads when they should have been 12 X 6.

Of course, the pads that were poured had been written in by people. And before somone says it wasn't disc golfers, read what they wrote in 10 inch letters on 18's pad; "KARMA". This along with initials on this one, a one other pad that I saw.

Nothing sanctioned again this year. The next best thing is the Texas 10 stop on August 20th.
Just for the record, the damage is not as severe as the city made it out to be but that certainly isn't the point. Myself and others have put countless hours (and gallons of blood) into this project only to have people treat it with less respect than it deserves. Especially considering that the pads are going in for there benefit.
Oh well, I'll live. We can probably come back through and patch the damaged sections anyway. I'm trying not to let it all get to me.

Ah......i can't wait until the Sun comes up on Saturday morning. A teammate of mine from New England, an Austinite, a Crowley man, and myself will be there at sun up for 36 holes of pristine golf! I'm the only one in the group that has seen Cedar Hill. I can't wait for their responses.
So Brian, that early in the mornig we probably should see some wildlife, huh? Maybe a coyote, a beaver, surely some hamsters/gerbils, and maybe even a rare Lamoreaux hiding in the bushes waiting to pounce on the poor little furry friends! :oSo what is the Cedar Hill EMS's number? I might need it. :D

Really man, there's someting wrong with you. Not sure if it's ADD or, maybe your mother didn't hug you enough as a child, but it's something.
There is the remote possibility of a Lamoreaux sighting but I doubt it. My son's 2nd birthday party is that day. You should, however, have a great chance to spot a coyote, fox or bobcat. Plus, whatever that is shaking in your belly.

Okay. That place is incredible. Especially in the early morning.
7:30am We were the first golfers out there. Started on hole #7 Beaver. Then jumped to Coyote #1, played it all the way through. Good to see some lanes opening up! Then we played #8 - #6 on the Beaver. As a fivesome, we finished at 11:20-30....all 36 holes!
We are really lucky to have a place like that so close to home. The road runner that we saw was cool(near #3teepad Beave)........far away from the Coyote course! :D
PS. I haven't seen the course since Feb. THE ROUGH IS ROUGH ! :D

Pizza - the city was supposed to have poured 6 more pads yesterday (I did not go out to verify) bringing the total count to 23 pads on 36 holes. The rest should be finished this week.
The only exception is hole 2 on the Beaver course. That is the hole where we are teeing off from the concrete left from the old caretakers house. At some point, that will be resurfaced for us.
By the way, "artists" have tagged almost every tee pad installed so far. In the end, they will get no credit as all it is forcing us to do is use budgeted money to resurface those pads and take away from other potential course amenities. Too bad. I had a couple of cool ideas that we can't afford to do now.

We needed the rain but I wish it would have held off just three more hours. All but three pads have been installed at the course. They had to stop where they were because of the rain. Might get finished today. If not, they should all be done on Monday. The only exception is the pad for hole 2 Beaver. That is the one we are teeing off from the cement left from the parking space of the old cartakers house. At some point, the city will dig out an area large enough for tee pad and re-fill it nice and smooth.
All that is really left to be done are the tee signs, some landscaping stuff to protect the tee pads and a message board. We are still talking about extending the fence by the parking lot maybe a few other things but these are the main items left.

hey brian, great job on the pads!
i'm writing to suggest that a permanent mando be put in on Beaver #4. i feel it should be the tree half way down the right side of the fairway, but the telephone pole would be ok also. the rightie hyzer over the road is unsafe, especially during crowded tourney conditions, and the hole is better golf if played straight down the fairway. watchu think?
also, we need formal clarification of OB on Beaver #1 and #4. some people are playing it across the road into the other fairway is safe... others are playing it road and beyond is OB. what are the thoughts of the designer?

Beaver 4 will have a mando on all events larger than a mini.
Also, road and beyond is OB.
Those were both part of the original plans when designing the course. Plan on Beaver 2 having a mando during events other than mini's. No lefty throws over the street! :D I haven't seen you do it but I have seen it done.

good deal on the mandos. (altho i think we oughta just put an arrow up on #4 and play it that way at all times.)
as far as #2 goes, the lefty hyzer doesnt really make sense to me. first of all, it must go fairly wide and that makes it a decent sized crush to get it to the pin. then there is the risk of clipping early cabbage, not coming back in, etc. it wont work at all into certain common wind directions. all of that combined with the fact the straight shot down the middle can be executed in any wind (in fact, the most favorable wind for the lefty hyzer is also the most favorable for the straight shot) , is only about 200 feetdownhill, and can be performed with a midrange at about 40%, make the lefty hyzer a novelty shot at best.
bslamoreaux
Jul 11 2005, 01:39 PM
Pat, I agree with you on #2. Right down the middle is the best choice. When I decided to use that hole the road was a concern for me. I knew someone would throw there. Sure enough, one day as I drove into the park I saw someone do it. They clipped a limp and almost hit a new Dodge Magnum. It drove over the hill after they threw. It just missed it and landed just on the other side of the road. I made my opinion of his shot choice known rigth away.
For #4, I think right at it is the best possible shot. Having a mando up will not stop the casuals from throwing that way. I can only keep them from doing it during a tourney. Besides, during mini's and casual play parked vehicles should not be an issue.
Brian

Put a mando up on #4. It's a safety concern whether its a casual round, a mini, or a biggie.
Most players will actually obey the mando.

I agree...even a dumb little arrow that is painted bright will bring most of them on the left side of the road....a challenge will entice most players..
Lefty Pat..Hole#2?...I guess another mando on the left tree..unless you can find a fence line to mando
sandalman
Jul 12 2005, 01:17 PM
feel free to put a mando on #2. going for the hyzer is completely stupid anyway, but the world does have some stupid people.
while we're talking, i also think something need to be done on Beaver #13 (the fishhook). the shortcut is getting beat to heck, and soon its gonna be an open 150 foot hole. i suggest making the right side of the fairway (inside the hook) OB. this hole is great when played as designed. ya need a decent controlled tee shot and a decent controlled second shot to get a three. birds are rare, and bogeys or worse cna occur. if this hole gets much more beat its gonna be worthless. lets make it OB! not a mando - if something wants to challenge the foliage, let them. but we need to severely discourage going thru the inside of the hook before its too late. the OB line could be a couple meters inside of the current tree line to prevent OB strokes from short deflections. if this seems agreeable, i'll be happy to string/sign it in order to see how it plays.
my_hero
Jul 12 2005, 01:47 PM
No way. No OB there. The hole is punishing enough if you hit the 1st trees, or get a bad kick.
Are you talking about the stuff on the right side getting thin?...Or the righty two finger anhyzer hole over everything?
sandalman
Jul 12 2005, 04:03 PM
the stuff on the right side getting thin. it will soon be a short flick thru the trees, with birdie potential and easy three-ness.

bslamoreaux
Jul 12 2005, 06:21 PM
Pat, that pin position is the short for that hole. Once the temp comes back down under 100, I plan on cutting deeper into the woods for the regular pin position. No need for a mando on that hole. You will see.
Brian
P.S. I'll let one of you answer James' question.
sandalman
Jul 12 2005, 06:26 PM
well, there's concrete on every tee on both courses. the foliage is super thick right now. a lot of the jungle off the fairway is changed - its not the nasty vines you saw earlier in the year - but it is still nasty thick stuff. some of the tweaky little holes, especially on the coyote, are getting more playable in the "rough"... but still extemely imprenatrable farther off. hole 12 on Beaver is really nice now with a left side line. Beaver #13 is in danger of becoming stupid, as so many people have tried to cut thru the fishhook they've almost beaten that hole into complete submission - too bad, it was a cool hole. Beaver #6 had some low limbs taken out - too many IMO, and now is kinda pedestrian. but overall the beaver course in particular has shaped up into a remarkable course. 920-930 players are able to average around 54, so it seems to offer a good challenge to the bulk of the players.
over all the park itself is incredibly beautiful this time of year. being so unspoiled, there is a wonderful feeling to it now - mainucred enough to feel like a park, wild enough to feel natural.

Wow!! what a course. I played it for the first time Thursday and I love it, one of the best courses that I have ever played especially the back nine. Once it gets some more traffic the courses will be even better, Which course is on the right side as you are pulling into Lorch Park?

How does saturday Sept. 10th sound for The Ace Race at Cedar Hill?
Nothing going on that weekend, so we need to jump on the date.....if it's good for both of us.
BTW, no CHCC this weekend? The wife gave me the day..... When is it?

Sorry for the poor planning on my part everyone. No Club Championships on August 6th. I dont know what the date will be at this point. Im thinking of making the annual club championship in the spring of every year to help avoid all of the other fall tournaments.
Anyway, I have been out of town and ridiculously busy for the past few weeks and have made no plans for the CC.
Right now, my goal is simply to complete the courses by the time the budget is closed. Might need to plan a couple or work days soon to help get everything completed.
In the meantime, plan on playing these courses during the Texas 10 on August 20th.
Have to run, as I can, Ill post more info on the board.

I still need to cut the ADGA a check for the # of ace racers that we had in Arlington....should've had you write me the check minus that #......oh well.
I'd like to write Lamoreaux a nice check for CH, but we need a lot more people in order for that to happen. Poor Lamoreaux....he thinks nobody likes him. :p :D
SSSSHHHHHHH I do not think it is allowed, but....................

I'd like some ideas on what holes y'all want to play.
I thought of breaking hole #1 up into 2 holes, and also using 2,3,4,5,6,7, and 18. That's 9 holes.........four loops of those 9 for 36 total holes. There will be some dead walks if we do that, but i can't think of any other way to use the front holes near the parking lot.
That is going to be very long walks....how about using 3 baskets and 3 tee pads per hole!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D:D:D:D

The long walks would be from 6's basket to 7's tee, then from 7's basket to 18's tee.
I want to minimize the # of temp baskets that we need to bring. If we cut hole #1 into 2 holes, all we'll need is one temp basket.
Now, how would your idea work? We could use two tees to the same bucket on a few holes?

WHAT IS THIS? You put words into my mouth that i didn't say! :)
I do not know what you are talking about!
How about holes 5 6 18. Find three different places to throw at each bucket from and we play all 9 pads 4 times!
my_hero
Oct 14 2005, 02:47 PM
That would work!!!! And, we wouldn't need any temp buckets, and we wouldn't have to walk up that hill four times!!!!!
Or you could play those 3 holes 12 times!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D:eek: :p :D  :D

Oct 14 2005, 03:00 PM

my_hero
Oct 14 2005, 03:01 PM
with the keg in between them so you could refill 18 times!
Hey that works for me.......................
Seriuosly. You could use holes 4, 5, 6, 7, 17, 18. That gives you six holes. maybe on three of those holes you have 2 tee pads for your nine holes and then play that the four times.
my_hero
Oct 14 2005, 03:22 PM
What about.......
Hole #1.......We could play hole #1 from the tee pad to a temp hole near the fence line.
Hole #2......Then throw from a tee near the fence to a temp near the road (across regular #1's original fairway.)
Hole #3.....from a tee pad on #1's fairway to #1's basket.
Hole #4....from a tee pad near #1's basket to #'3's basket.(cars have the right of way! :))
Hole #5.....use short version of hole #4
Hole #6.....use short version of hole #5
Hole #7.....use short version of hole #6
Hole #8.....7's tee pad to a temp on the dirt road.
Hole #9.....use short version of hole #18 where you tee off somewhere along #7's road.
4 times!!
or you could do it that way!!!

First off, Thanks to Cedar Hill Parks/Rec, Cedar Hill Disc Golf Association, Brian Lamoreaux, Claydog Brumit, and Discraft for making this possible.
We had 34 participants at Cedar Hill's Ace Race!
DAVID KINTER won the $300 Grand Prize with 2 aces and 0 metal hits. He aced hole #1 both times, one of those being his very 1st throw of the Race. What a way to start! Congrats DAVID. Enjoy that $300 GRAND PRIZE!
The following people had aces and did not win, so they'll get a special "i aced" hot stamped disc sometime in Nov, or Dec.
TERRY TOOLEN
BRIAN LAMOREAUX
JOHN LUEKE
JOHN MAIURO
GILBERT CASAS
I threw in a 2nd place prize this time consisting of a limited edition 2005 MIDNIGHT Z-BUZZZ, a ghost stamped Z-XL from the Discraft Doubles NorthEastern Tour, a Pro-D Crush, and a Pro-D Challenger. Terry, Brian, and Lueke split it up between them in a very diplomatic disc golf way.
Thanks to everyone who offered to "share" their players pack with those that didn't pre-order. Got to love that disc golf camaraderie! I'll be getting in touch with all of you this weekend so that we can settle what is owed.
Thanks for the support, and look for more Dallas/FortWorth ACE RACES in 2006.

Weekly mini on tap for Cedar Hill this Saturday at 3:00. I'll be out early for some course work in case anyone wants to help.

Later,

I had a great meeting with the city on Friday at the park. Everything is starting to come together. The tee signs are almost ready for ordering, the tee pads that need it will be lengthened or completely rebuilt within the next couple of weeks and the city found an Eagle Scout to help with the remaining clearing for the longer pin positions. I'll be finalizing the new pin positions in next couple of weeks so he can get going on that. I'm open to suggestions. **Speak now or forever hold you peace**
The city will also be installing a map holder on the message board so whoever it is that keeps breaking into it will stop stealing my maps.
They will also be replacing the number plates that are missing and re-inforcing them all to prevent theft. Editorial: How dissapointing it is to find so many things missing or damaged in addition to trash next to en empty trash can. Editiorial off.
Anyway, the city is happy, Dallas county is happy and things are getting back into full swing now that the city is not preoccupied with displaced residents of the recent tragic hurricanes.
Game on....
