I have never had a rating before, b/c last year, my first year as a member of the PDGA, I only played 2 sanctioned events as an intermediate. This year, I have played in 4 PDGA tourneys as an Advance player, and I was wondering when I will be issued a rating?

Straight form the PDGA office on another thread
3rd stats report is done. Player stats and event results are now on-line for 95 events. 1st player ratings update for 2004 is on schedule for May 15.

The ratings have been done for a week but we're just sitting on them so we don't raise expectations and can try some new delay excuses (just 'Kid'ing). Let's see Kid Roc's rating... I see a 3-digit number and it has a 9 in it. But you'll just have to wait until at least the 15th.

Question regarding Ratings updates and when they are applied, specifically to a tourney that is in progress? When this update becomes public is there a grace period or if a MA2 player's rating goes above 914, do they have to finish the tourney as MA1? A possibility for tourneys this coming weekend since the ratings are due to be updated this Saturday. Is there a way to delay the release or have the release before Friday so us TDs don't have this additional burden?
Just curious,
Ray
ck34
May 10 2004, 03:57 PM
Technically, the plan was to have the ratings not effective until the first of the month following the update, except for players who have never had a rating before. If an event is already underway during an update, the update doesn't impact that event.
prairie_dawg
May 10 2004, 04:28 PM
Thanks Chuck. That's what I thought about updates that occur during a tourney, but wanted to make sure. This also helps the other TD this weekend just in case ;) . You never know when someone goes home Saturday and sees a competitor in a lower division than their current rating and complains to the TD. I'll just keep a list of the Ams ratings when I get their signup info so there is no mistake. :D

Hey Chuck,
Question for you: If you take a penalty stroke is that supposed to be reported in the results and does it have any impact on your PR?
Thanks!
ck34
May 10 2004, 04:49 PM
Penalties are part of the score. Hopefully, excessive penalty rounds like the 68, wunderkind Matt Orum "shot" at BG (arrived late) will drop in the 15% of his worst rounds. That's one of the reasons we did the 15% drop so we wouldn't need to monitor every round for exception results. Actually, in his case, that round will drop out in our new filter rejecting rounds more than about 3 standard deviatons below a player's current average rating. And, that happens before the 15% drop happens.

May 10 2004, 05:24 PM
We will drop a few on the high side but only if we can confirm it was a calculation error. Perhaps a Junior player got a rating on a course configuration that she didn't play and it was rated 1020.
The standard deviation gets larger the lower the rating. For now, the bottom cut is... no I can't tell you.

If you go back to previous posts, you'll see that we're moving away from trying to post the ratings on the 15th if that date falls right before or on a weekend. For instance, we wouldn't want to publish new ratings online if the 15th was on a Friday, right after the office sent out the weekend's membership lists to TDs (that would lead to online ratings that didn't match the lists, which may cause confusion).
One important event that we had results for inadvertently wasn't included in the first pass of the update, which was done Friday, so we're adding it in. We will have the new ratings posted shortly.

Theo, what can the PDGA do to get a tournament director of an A tier to turn in the results? The director is already on the overdue list. I have even called and talked to the wife who helps run the business. The answer i got is that he has ran so many tournaments that he has been to busy to send them in. This is uncalled for. If you are going to give A tier status to tournaments then they should get the results in on time.

Well I am guessing no ratings tonight maybe tomorrow.
Theo or Chuck, has there been any consideration given to dropping the worst 15% of every rated player's rounds -- even if they have less than 20 rounds? It seems to skew down the ratings of AM.s when a player with 17 rounds or less propagates statistics. Is that an accurate observation?

Yes it is the A-tier in Florida. He has time to send in the pro results but can not find time to send in the ams. It was a great tournament but i dont know if i will go next year. Here's the key, tough guy--you've been playing for over 5 years (you joined the PDGA in 2001, and might have been playing for significantly longer than that before you joined).
Just because you haven't played in a sanctioned tourney in over 5 years doesn't mean that you haven't been playing (and if you were able to nearly cash in MPO then you've obviously been playing).
You try to make it sound as though you are a beginner. You're not. If you had played Rec, regardless of your rating, you would be an ***** of huge proportions...as Rec is intended for newer players.
You obviously care more about ratings than you let on, otherwise you wouldn't have opened your pie hole in this topic.

May 18 2004, 04:55 PM
I see at least 5 Texas players who's new ratings automatically bump them from MA2 to MA1.
Of those 5, two of them (Denny Ritner 914 t0 917, and Joe Torrence 914 to 916) were already playing Advanced. Two others (Keith Vest 889 to 920, and Terry Toolen 909 to 920) were flipping back and forth between AM and Advanced. The other player (Anthony Martinez 925*), has only been playing (and cashing heavily) in the AM division (but not any more).
Marcus Hazzle, on the other hand, can drop back down AM if he feels so inclined (920 to 911).
Looks like The Kid finally has a rating more indicative of his current skill level.

I'm not sure where anyone got the idea ratings updates would be published by the 15th of a month. The documents that I've posted on updates I believe have always said mid-month, not the 15th. As Theo pointed out, we're not publishing on days between about Wednesday thru Sunday afternoon so the numbers are in sync with the PDGA member files sent to TDs right before an event.
Many of the questions posted here can also be answered with the documents finally posted on the PDGA site that Bruce has been so patient to prod us for so long.

Dear PDGA,
I have it upon good authority that Osama Bid Laden is closely watching this situation. If the next ratings updates are not published by midnight on July 15th, 2004, simultaneous attacks on all 1300+ disc golf courses throughout the country will occur.
I'm told that President Bush is closely watching this situation as well. Despite the promised transfer of power on June 30th, if the next ratings updates are not published by midnight on July 15th, 2004, a draft will be reinstated and all disc golfers will be sent to launch a new war initiative against Iraq.
As you can see, the ratings updates are truly life-or-death scenarios. Or at least some bozos on this board act that way.

Jun 02 2004, 05:20 PM
Do they say Official Results or Unofficial Results?
It appears that Official Results with no ratings have not been processed through the ratings system and added to players ratings yet.
The Unofficial Results haven't had their reports turned in and processed by the PDGA, so they have unofficial ratings you can see. I think once the reports are processed into the PDGA system, the unofficial ratings disappear and the Official ratings will reappear sometime prior to the next ratings update.
I think this is the process, but someone in the know would know for sure.
daveoh
Jun 02 2004, 05:22 PM
"preliminary" i.e unofficial ratings are found on Tourneys that post results right away. As soon as the "Official Tournament Resuls" are posted, these ratings dissapear. They will be re-calculated and adjusted before being posted with the new ratings update (sometime in August). This affects any tournament results that were included in the May24th update but were not used to calculate your ratings posted on May 18th.
(at least thats how I understood it)

No explanation, Eddie. I looked at it again, and I think someone made a mistake. It should be included, because your most recent rated round is in April. There's no telling. Not too much to worry about, because it would have dropped out of the next ratings update anyhow.

We're on track to complete processing by middle of next week. Our policy is to publish the updates on a Monday or Tuesday so TDs and players have time to adjust divisions if necessary for the weekend events. So, the likely date for publishing the mid-July update is Monday, July 19. As usual, these ratings will be the ones used for pool seedings at Worlds.

How does that work Chuck? Are the higher rated players put in the Pool A, next higher in B and so on?
ck34
Jul 11 2004, 04:28 PM
Usually, only the top pool has the highest rated players in Open and Master Pro. Not sure whether Advanced will be done that way (most likely) or whether ratings will be used to make equally seeded pools. Typically, the Open B pool is where players who request being in the same pool for transportation reasons are placed, but B and C (and D if exists) pools are roughly equally seeded.
The history on top heavy seeding goes back to Charlotte Worlds when roughly equally seeded pools (no ratings then) had drastically different weather conditions on course sets that were wide open versus in the woods. I believe seeding started in the 2000 Worlds to make sure at least the top rated players were together to avoid weather/course issues.
It has continued since then. However, top seeding wasn't needed at Houston because all courses were not only on the same site but were all about the same amount of openness. I think the top seeding is needed most of the time. But when circumstances like Houston or future Worlds in Augusta with similar terrain courses on the same site, equally seeded pools would allow the special privilege from the "old days" when an "average joe" might get to be in a group with one of the World's best players in the first round.

Let's hope that the pools are equal in number this time around. Last year there were only 16 Open players in one pool, while the other 2 Open pools had 72. The pools should be roughly equal in number. That was a pretty large injustice to the people in the short pool. It would have made more sense to 3 pools of roughly 54 players each, seeding only the top pool.

Just workin' yah Pat, calm down, I can see the veins popping out on your forehead from PA.
There is nothing wrong with earning the right to play in the top pool at the Worlds. Aren't we looking for ways to enhance what it means to be a top golfer (without taking away the breast milk from the protected divisions)?

Here's an idea for some entrepreneurial minded hypothetical future Pro Worlds TD. This is not anything I've thought through. I'll let Nick think it through for me:
Announce in advance that the top 18 pros by rating will automatically go into the A pool, one per hole, with the top rated pro on hole 1. Then give the remaining 54 slots to the 54 highest bidders.
If it is worth something to be in the A pool, why not capture that value and return it to the cashing pros?
ck34
Jul 14 2004, 12:27 PM
Good idea that's been proposed several years ago but no takers yet. The idea was to allow anyone to bid on playing with any player in your division in the first round. You could bid $5 to play with your bud at Worlds or bid $100 or more to play with Climo. The person who was bid on would receive half of the amount bid and the purse for that division gets the rest. The hope was for top players to do the kind of things and have the kind of attitude that would inspire people to bid to play with them. Perhaps it would help improve some behavior and provide additional reward to the top players.
Now that it appears the PDGA may hold to the earlier reg deadline for Worlds, this becomes more feasible because there would be time to handle the pairing details for this venture. We considered trying this at our Supertour and possibly 2001 Pro Worlds a few years ago but it got lost in the mire of other priorities.

OK here is one for you....still have to wait for the official ratings for the tourney. Today in Jersey. 920 player shoots 1040 round.

why does that strike you as bizzare, noaceyet?

Jul 18 2004, 09:51 PM
everyone shoots hot at some time. I'm only a 910ish player on average right now but I'll come out sometimes and shoot 2 strokes off of the top pro. that is how I cash in the top ten on some occassions.
Diron,
did you shoot your 1000 rated round in a tourney? If so, I didn't see it in your posted results...???
noaceyet,
yes, of course lol. gary lewis is slow when it comes to results (so are alot of freakin' tds, i still have 4 tournaments not yet added to my results)
chris heeren won open there and we tied for the hot round. it was the Shorewood Shootout.
my current rating is the result of one, (my first and worst) tournament round, despite having 5 rounds on record at the moment
odds are this guy hasn't played in many tournaments (much like myself) so his rating is inaccurate.
being 17, and only a member of the pdga since this april. my rating is extremely inaccurate. i'm usually a 910 player, but when i get hot anything from 960 is realisitic, and 1000 sometimes reachable: but thats the story with most people anyways, it's just about who does it the most consistantly :D
crazy thing is, had i shot a 1000 round at that first tournament i played in april, it'd be forced to be shoot open right now :D:D:D
what a joke!

C'mon Jamie. If you know about the volunteer mumbo jumbo then you also know that anytime they suggest a ratings update date it is at least one week later. They are posting those dates in "disc golf time." You know, like "Registration 8:00 - 9:30. Players' Meeting 9:45" and they are still doing registration at 9:45.

I'm waiting until everyone's in bed, so you can all toss and turn all night.
Actually, we're just confirming a couple of last minute things, and will hopefully be publishing them in a few hours (before midnight Pacific time). There IS a small possibility that we'll have to do it tomorrow.

Another decent increase for me - from 909 to 914. And I can still play Intermediate!!! (although I've been playing Advanced Masters for the last few events, and will probably continue to do so).

why arent the points bonanzas on this update
Just curious as to why none of the tourneys played in NC in June show up in the new ratings...... Yet there are a number of other tournaments played elsewhere in June (and even a few from July) that did make the ratings. All but one of the NC tournaments had scores posted almost immediately after the events ended, so the results should have been included.
Of course on the bright side...... I can wait a few more months before my ratings drop :)

can you please tell me the order that people are being updated? People above my PDGA # and my current rating are updated and I am still stuck with my Feb. rating. Thank You.

:(
come on guys, I sooo tired of being at 880 :(
I hope I get updated during the night so I will have a nice surprise when I get to work in the morning! (like 920-930 would be delightful).
mike jo and Barge, if you want "real" answers to your questions you might have to "send them to the PDGA office via the pdga.com feedback page".
But it is *very* likely that these tournaments are not in the ratings because either A) the TD report was not received, or B) the course config info was not complete or accurate. Note that the next-day posting of results is unofficial. The TD must submit the full tournament report in order for official results to be posted and processed.
kielar, if you post your name or pdga#, I could look into why your rating didn't change.
Ryan, you only have one new event, and it wasn't processed. I don't know why it wasn't processed, but it is under investigation by the Committee.

Nice move, Theo, ya passed me :p ;) Well, at least I didn't drop any, hanging in there at 911. So the ratings are current on the worlds entry list right? If so, and they appear to be, I'm in the middle of the pack as far as ratings go. Guess my next event will be Worlds, (if the TD can get it sanctioned) so I better shoot some good rounds for my next update! :DI suppose our next local PDGA won't count in the next update since the event will be in October. Thanks for your work. Russ3523

I only dropped 2 points which is better than I thought, still it's going to be tough to hit my goal of 980 with only 2 more updates this year. I'll have to shoot 1000 golf more often than not...
It's amazing to think that it is just a matter of cutting out 3 strokes on a course with an SSA of 52.5 for a 971 golfer to shoot 1000 golf.
last name is Kielar and my number is 23570. Could you also tell my why Click #23542 is not updated either.

It looks like in the two tournaments you played this year, the Intermediate division played a different course config than the other divisions (or at least it looks like it was reported that way). So I would guess that the Int division didn't have enough rated players in it to generate ratings for the division.
(It takes X players over a Y rating on a particular config in order to generate ratings for that config. I *think* X is 10 and Y is 800, but I'm not 100% sure on that.)
With each update, more and more Int players get ratings, so hopefully even if you play a different config in the future, maybe there will be enough Ints to generate ratings.
(Same deal for Click.)

3 strokes is a lot more than it sounds. If I could only cut out 3 strokes I would be the worlds best disc golfer :D I've been trying to figure out how to do it all year, so when you figure out how to do it, please tell me!!

Rodney,
Thank you for the personalized attention, I appreciate it greatly. I am wondering though, why I only have one new tournament. The Lakefront Open was after the last ratings rollout, so I am guessing that is the tourney you are referring to. However, I have also played in the San Diego Open (way back in may), and in Progress (NW amateur series tourney) in June.
The results for the San Diego Open haven't been added to the Tour page, so I am guessing Dave Devine probably hasn't even sent them to you, but the Progress results have been available for about a month.
I know the TDs can be a big stopping block, so if the SDO and Progress aren't available, there is nothing for me to gripe about, but it would be wonderful to have all three in my cache :D.
Thanks,
ryan
