The database crashed. Some weird glitch happens that some users get currupted/deleted, and that makes every post of theirs disappear as well as every thread they ever started and all posts that were replies to any post of theirs. It happened to me before.
They can restore it. But you might have to ask.
I think I was deleted because I keep asking about the Temple Open ratings that are screwed up, yet official.
:)
I'm kidding... :)

Are the ratings really screwed up for Temple Open?
Yes. They're also messed up for '03 Coastal Clash. I sent a message informing the powers that be. At Temple MA2, MA3 played shorts. At Chorpus MA3 played shorts.

That is one thing Jerry needs to keep straight on his TD report for Tyler--the course rotations and layouts... It's hard to tell if the unofficial numbers are set up correctly...

It would be nice if the 2003 Texas ten was corrected from last year. Was told it would be the past 2 ratings , but not yet!
BTW, Roger completed the first pass of the ratings late last night for us to review. We won't tell when they'll be posted between Sunday and Tuesday so we won't interfere with any 'heavy' wagering on what time.
Who's starting the pool as to when they will be published?

How about a $5 per day discount to all of us who have not paid our yearly membership fees, who were waiting to see if our ratings warranted the renewal?
scoop
Dec 21 2004, 02:53 PM
but it may take until Jan 2nd for the 20MB update to transfer to the server starting tonight over the phone line from where Theo is currently on the road. He'll do his best tonight to find a way to get it transmitted soon.
Did he go to Katmandu? Perhaps Cusco, Peru?
A 20 MB upload via a phone line/dial-up modem? Yeah, nothing could possibley go wrong with that. Corrupted data, broken tables, incomplete data? All possible and likely when you're disconnected (highly probably over a dial-up connection) from your session.
Would have been easier, safer, and more convenient to find the nearest spot in town with a free WiFi access point (they are everywhere these days), connect with his wireless access card, and viola...results uploaded in about 10 minutes.
The PDGA touts "tracked and updated ratings" as a selling point of membership. So, I'd be all in favor of the PDGA spending about $30 for a wireless Ethernet card so the only person with access to the data can upload it in a timely and reliable fashion.
Or, I don't know....maybe the data could be stored on a remote server, rather than on one guy's local machine..that way it could be accessed by someone that has better than a 14.4 baud modem as their interface to the world.
Just some suggestions.
Carry on.
I wish my job were as lenient. I thought that post by Cuck was a joke.

where's the VPO??? am AND pro ???
VPO Pro was processed either by Roger or Rodney. There may have been some problem with the report. We hope to have all of those resolved before the official 2004 yearend ratings update in mid-Feb.
If not all round ratings show up, there may not have been enough propagators for that layout or there was a problem processing the TD report. We've got VPO on the list to check. Any others that show the results as "Official" but don't have ratings (Doubles and most X-tiers don't get ratings)
Sweet, I can offically play Advanced again! That means I suck.

If not all round ratings show up, there may not have been enough propagators for that layout or there was a problem processing the TD report. We've got VPO on the list to check. Any others that show the results as "Official" but don't have ratings (Doubles and most X-tiers don't get ratings)
::dead horse mode on::
Building on that point, it looks like the Temple Open had the ratings stripped from Int and Rec, but not recalculated for any divisions. I still find it hard to believe an open player can shoot a 963 event and win, especially when 4 of the top 5 are rated 980+.
::dead horse mode off::
Thanks for the work. I understand it can be hard to decipher and straighten out TD reports and layouts. This may be a case of not believing the numbers, but with the initial problems I want to be sure. Accuracy is important, right?

When no TD report has been received, but scores submitted, simple ratings show up. (This is where Martin saw his 998 round.)
When the TD report is submitted, those ratings disappear to the database so the actual ratings can be processed and checked. From what Chuck says, the simple ratings are usually close.
Since I was never on the first TD report (as it left off cut players), I was able to compare my scores to others and calculate that I shot a simple rating of 931 in Round 1. Round 3 was a wonderful 829. :o
The new TD report includes (I hope) all players and will result in ratings for all.

Better get used to it...... Your rating is 11 points higher than MTL's and you know what everybody has been saying to (and about) him :D
I know where you're coming from though since my first PDGA rating came out earlier this year as a 975. Now it only included one tournament.... on my home courses in Durham..... and included a round where I beat my PR by 3 strokes with a 13 down.... but I definitely didn't think I had the game of a 975 rated player. Fortunately each rating since then has included many more rounds and my rating continues to drop. Once that tournament from Nov 1993 drops off on the next ratings update, my rating should drop even more.... If I keep it up, I can move back and play advanced masters ;)

Roger,
Thanks for the reply. The juniors played from the same tees as everyone else. However in the 1st round they skipped around playing holes from different courses. In the 2nd round they played holes 9 thur 26 (18 holes) of a 27 hole course. Many of the holes they played where in the 400 to 600 foot range.
I posted the following question to the TD on 10/28/04:
<font color="blue">
------------------------------------------------------------
Are the junior ratings correct? I thought the course played by the juniors was harder on Sunday than on Saturday. I also thought that Nicole played a little better on Sunday than Saturday, yet the her rating was lower on Sunday. All the junior ratings were lower on Sunday. So I was just wondering if the ratings were correct.

The Junior ratings aren't correct Rick...I haven't quite figured out how to set up the courses that they played...they played full holes but a mixture of courses. I may have to drop them from the results for now and let the stats guys figure it out when I turn the in official results.

Rounds drop off when they get two years old. They are showing that you only played three tournaments in the last couple of years.
sandalman
Dec 29 2004, 04:05 PM
those dropped rounds were prolly older than 16-Nov-2002. if so, they were older than 2 years from the date of your most recent rated round, and therefore are not part of the rating calculation (anymore).

The 2 year limit starts at the date of your last rated event, not the date the ratings were done.
i dont get it. i have only played 3 pdga tournaments. my first ever was the masters cup. my rating was an 896. not bad for my first tourny but not good either. my second tournament was the san francisco safari. i played about the same and my rating held at 896. my last tournie was the san francisco full sail bay series. i shot two 900+ rounds and in the updated player ratings my average dropped from 896 to 890?!?
what gives?

Jan 03 2005, 02:06 AM
Your first 2 ratings only included the Masters cup.
I know this because your ratings history shows that the September ratings only used 3 rounds.
Also because if the second event had been included, your rating would have dropped to 878.
Your good rounds in the last event brought your rating back up to 890.
uh uh. i did the math. all of my rounds added up divided by the number of rounds played is 896.4 something. i know its lousy but its only going to be 6 points harder to break 900 if i let it go unnoticed.

Before the "are we there yet?" crowd gets on here, the mid-Feb ratings update, which will be considered the Final 2004 ratings, will be posted sometime between this coming Sunday evening and Tuesday evening. Roger has processed the final batches and we'll be in the process of reviewing them the next few days. Even if you don't have an event processed since the December update, it's possible your rating might have changed a point or two. We went back and reprocessed several events that did not have the minimum 10 propagators and dropped the number to 5 so they could get ratings. So, some smaller events and smaller divisions may discover thay have some new round ratings in this update.
In addition, a Taiwanese and several Japanese events were rated this time so we welcome players outside North America who now have new or updated PDGA Player Ratings. No 2005 events are in this rating update. The first update to include 2005 events and use our revised process will be mid-May.

Feb 16 2005, 09:34 PM
If players were members last year, there's a time lag about 6 weeks into the next year where the website shows you as a member. We process ratings for everyone if they have a PDGA number on the TD reports regardless whether they are current members. However, if you are not a current member, then your info won't be visible online. As soon as you renew, then your info becomes visible online.
The direct answer is, "I don't know whether your info will be live the day it's posted. But it should be soon thereafter."
The Ratings say they are updated but if I go into a player's rating it still says it "(as of Dec. 15 2004)" and it doesnt appear that ratings have changed...at least I havent noticed any changes.
Also on another note, The 2005 Willamette open had an error in the scores for one round when it was reported to the PDGA. The error showed that the highest rated player at the event shot 2 strokes better than he acctually did, the problem has been corrected but the ratings werent recalculated this players rating was just moved down. In my understanding the scores of the best player at the event have something to do with the SSA of the course for that round. Just wondering how that works. Thanks.
Plankeye
Feb 25 2005, 03:13 AM
The reason why your rating date says Dec. 15th is because it didn't change. They went back to some of the older tournies that didn't have 10 propagators and rated them based on 5 propagators.
ck34
Feb 27 2005, 12:14 PM
Facts from 2004 season:
7555 PDGA members had rated rounds
5686 (75%) had ratings based on at least 8 rounds (propagators if rating over 799)
588 (8%) had ratings based on at least 32 rounds (before 15% dropped)
15.7 = average number of rounds upon which a rating is based
15 = median number of rounds upon which a rating is based

799 is the cutoff for being a gator? Ugh. That screws up the am women.
ck34
Feb 27 2005, 01:55 PM
I agree. That's why we'll be looking into the ramifications of extending propagator status to lower ratings levels, if it's possible or how to make it work, once the revised overall process is in place this May. We've already seen the issue where a lower rated pool seems to generate slightly different ratings than a higher rated pool. That's partly because the overall function is non-linear in the first place. But it's definitely a goal to see what we can do so our lower rated players have more opportunities to get rated rounds.
Chuck, from a perspective of wanting to improve my rating, would playing Advanced at the Bowling Green AM tournament in all likelihood be a better move than playing Advanced masters, or is it too hard to say? (let's assume I play the same score regardless of division).
ck34
Mar 08 2005, 10:23 AM
In theory, there shouldn't be a difference. If you believe some of the speculation, you might get a slightly higher rating by playing in the pool that has a higher average rating under the current process. However, BG will be rated under the new system which should minimize or eliminate this unconfirmed effect. It's also not certain BG will get processed in time for the mid-May update if the TD doesn't get the report done in time. It takes longer to process this huge event manually like a Worlds because of multiple pools playing different courses at the same time.
With multiple Advanced pools there, it's unclear whether your Adv pool average would be higher than the Adv Master pool so I would play where you want.

ck34
Mar 08 2005, 09:45 PM
Starting in the second half of 2004, we dropped the number of gators to at least 5 (it was 10). It takes 8 rated rounds to become a gator.
With multiple Advanced pools there, it's unclear whether your Adv pool average would be higher than the Adv Master pool so I would play where you want.
Chuck, if you are saying it will be my level of play rather than some crafty decision on my part to play amongst the most advantageous pool that will make or break my rating -- i am afraid that's totally unacceptable :p :D
Yes Rob, I agree. I think it is a conspiracy on Chucks part to keep us down. I have played WAY over my rating consistantly for the past 6 months, (only playing 1 year), and my rating does not show it. The only good thing about it, is that people under estimate me.

I would say that would throw the ratings WAY OFF!!!! I have seen alot of this happening at tournaments. Matt Blakely was entered in a tournament as a 800 rated player and that threw the ratings off at another tournament.
I need to start playing rated rounds with the pros. That way my 989 rounds will be 1009. For whatever reason I just cant seem to shoot break 990 in a tournament round

I calculated the BG ratings and I shot a 1001 1013 975 975, I think it actually listed me as 1013 1001 950's and 980's eitherway the 1st and 3rd rounds where lower ratings than they should have been, and the 2nd and 4th were too high.

Chuck:
Have the results for the Graceland Open and J&B Rolling Hills Doubles (April 24th and 25th) been submitted yet? If not, how long do they have to get them in? Thanks for all the hard work!!

Chuck is it too early to ask you our "one question/guess" for our ratings?
If not, did mine go up? I would figure it out myself but I don't know the new formula.
