Hey Ryan,

Preliminary results uploaded during or immediately following an event are not considered for points and ratings updates until the tournament director turns in the complete TD Report.

Yes, I'm afraid you're stuck with that rating until you play in a tournament where your division plays on a config that has enough players to generate ratings.

If the Int division has enough 800+ players, or if Int plays the same config as everyone else, you'll be in good shape.

You got sometin' to add to that nuttin'?

I am curious why the 9th Farm Life Open was not included in the update? I did the online results myself, and the TD said he sent in the official TD report about 3 days before I ever did the online results. The tournament was Jun. 5-6 if someone wants to check into this.

For faster (more meaningful) responses to your questions please send them to the PDGA Ratings Committee via the "Contact" link here at PDGA.com. This will send an email directly to the PDGA Ratings Committee members. I know that they are looking into many of these issues as we post here, it would just speed things up a bit.

I noticed that in one of the tournaments i played in (Des Moines Challenge), my scores were switched for the courses i played, giving me an 802 on one and a 1047 for the other. Will this affect my real rating at all or would it even out if the scores were correct with the courses?

We noticed the suspect 1047 round just before the ratings were published, but didn't hold them up as it appeared to be a problem with only your score. We didn't know what the problem was.

If your scores had been reported correctly, it looks like your rating would be about 932 instead of 927.

Make sure you report it to the PDGA Office through the feedback page, and it will get corrected before the next update.

neonnoodle
Jul 23 2004, 10:45 AM
It has been mentioned here and elsewhere that sometimes, even with no new round data, that PDGA Player Ratings will be adjusted according to either refinement of the formulas that generate the Player Rating or corrections to the actually data already received (i.e. corrections to layouts played by each division, removal of an aberrant score or two, etc).

So even without new rounds played in the calculations your PDGA Player Rating might change.

The first place to check for missing rounds within your PDGA Player Rating is the TD who ran the event. Ask if the have sent in the results. Then ask if they filled out the TD Report COMPLETELY particularly the sections necessary to generate accurate PDGA Player Ratings.

Jul 23 2004, 01:01 PM
Nick,
gotta ask you a question...you always have an answer...

Now I read that the SSA is 4-6 strokes above course record for 18 holes http://www.pdga.com/competition/ratings/PRWCPbro.PDF Course record past weekend at the Jam was 58 for 22 holes. Your calculations put the SSA at roughly 60 that is for 22 holes, right?

Now we played 22 holes last year, and the PDGA website gives about a 58.5 for the course. But they indicate it is only for 18 holes...

http://www.pdga.com/tournament/course_ratings_by_tournament.php?TournID=3712

Me confused

neonnoodle
Jul 23 2004, 02:18 PM
Rob,

"18" holes is an error. This could be the cause of the difference. This would tend to deflate the Event Ratings (meaning players ERs should probably been more divergent from the SSA - a player with a 1030 ER probably should have a 1040 ER and so on).

That 4-6 strokes better than SSA is likely for more established courses were many 1000+ golfers have played it more than once. If you look at the prior years scores which (other than the added OB lines) played much the same as this years the best round was 55, 5 less than the SSA of 60.

(For whatever reason all of the OB lines didn't make that much of a difference, about 1 stroke for both rounds.)

Temple Open Ratings (http://www.pdga.com/tournament/tournament_results.php?TournID=4100&year=2004&include_ratings=1#Open)

Jul 27 2004, 10:55 AM
I learned something new (its not new, its just new that I figured it out) on the online tourney program yesterday when posting scores.

I essentially plugged in 5 different course layouts to make sure that all divisions look correct and accurate ratings were posted. I can tell Psycho how to do this and it should take care of the problem. :)

Not to start a nagging thread, but I was just curious when we can tentatively expect the next rating update. The reason I am asking is because the "ratings guide" says they will be updated Apr 15th, June 15, Sept 15, and Dec 15. The June 15 one came on July 20. So, basically what I am asking is will there be another delay, or will be be able to expect the next update to arrive close to September 15th? Just curious.. not trying to nagg.

ck34
Aug 27 2004, 01:29 AM
Make sure to update whatever document you got those dates from, but for the past two years the updates are five times a year in mid-Feb, mid-May, mid-July, mid-Sep and mid-Dec. That doesn't mean the 15th if it falls on a Wednesday thru Sunday. We like to post them early in the week on Monday or Tuesday so TDs and players have time to adjust if divisions change for an event the upcoming weekend.

Why wasn't the Johnny Roberts Memorial (Arvada, Colorado, July 10-11) included in the ratings update? The results have been up for over a month WITH round ratings. I don't know if that would have changed my rating but I wonder why it was not included. Only thing I can think of is that they still say "unofficial results".

On the other hand...you all (I may not know who you are but you do!) do a great job with the ratings. It's not perfect yet so whining will always occur but I think it's pretty cool. It's at least one benchmark for me to compare myself with people I have yet to play against. Thanks!

Just a questin about the 85% of rounds being used...I got 10 rounds in there and they are all used???

We've posted before that it doesn't get to 15% drops until you have almost 15 rounds. All rounds up to 10 are included. Then with 11, the first round is dropped.

To the best of our knowledge, all events that were properly reported to PDGA HQ by about Aug 28th or so have been processed for ratings. If it doesn't have ratings, either the report isn't complete, there's a problem with some of the information or there were not enough PDGA members with established ratings at the event to rate some or all of the rounds.

JJ shot a 2 down at DMACC and his rating was 1017 and i shot a 1 down and my was 989???

Each round is calculated separately based on the ratings of the players and weather in that round. DMACC had the widest range of SSAs since it was the most open course and had a wide range of wind conditions. The same score at DMACC varied up to 54 points depending on which round you played. Look at the Course Statistics for the event to see how the SSA changed on each course at Worlds. However, within a specific round, a one throw difference will be worth about 9-10 points.

The semis were rated to the best of my knowledge if you look at your personal Ratings Detail. I know I have a 'Round 11' in my detail for the semis at Ewing. I don't think Semis and Finals round ratings are displayed on the event score table like the individual rounds do.

Efrain,

I'm bored, so I re-calculated your rating with the 2004 LOSO rounds included. Assuming the ratings standards laid out in the official ratings guide, which are: All rounds in the past 12 months included, going back up to 24 months if fewer than 20 rated rounds in the last 12 months, rating calculated as an average of the top 85% of the included rounds... your rating should have gone up 4 pts.

Of course, the current PDGA ratings include rounds you played outside the standard window. I assume that the "past 12 months" is actually <13 months, meaning that ratings figured on Sep. 20th include a tourney from Sep. 6-7, 2003 (Coastal Clash). With that tourney included, your rating only goes up 1 point (931.5 rounded up to 932).

so... basically, at the next rating update (if LOSO is included and you don't play any more tournaments that are reported for that update) your rating should be 935. Can ya tell I'm bored? :D

baldguy
Sep 22 2004, 12:00 PM
heh, I don't know much about that... but I was corrected on the 12-month ratings window. According to rodney, the 12-month window ends with your last rated tournament. In that case, Efrain's Outlaws (Aug 2003) and Coastal Clash (Sep 2003) tournaments would be included since his last rated tournament was LOSO (July 2004). With that data included, his rating would be 928; down 3 points. Of course, he's still WAY better than me :)

Ef, just come up to DFW and play the ZT10 final, shoot well and you should knock out the Outlaws rounds and maybe a couple of the lower ones in your rating to get over the 940 mark. You definitely have the game for it :)

When you bring up the results for an event, right under the event name it says either Official Results or Unofficial Results. Riverside says unofficial meaning the report hasn't been received or processed yet. If it says Official Results, the points have been awarded. If it's says Official AND the Round Ratings link is there, the ratings have been processed.

Dan, I'm not Chuck, but at DMACC, as you know, there wasn't just wind, there was also water.

A 5 stroke SSA difference from wind alone would seem high to me. But when the wind brings the water into play, you start bringing in OB strokes, not just windblown strokes.

Further, with a new course, there might be some "learning" factor involved with players creating a lower SSA the 2nd time they played it. Of course, this would be hidden by the lower wind, but it would still contribute.

I'm not saying I'm fully at ease with that range, but I think it helps explain it.

Or you could put it this way.

We have a kid who has played since he could WALK on a course in his backyard and has been growing up around disc golf his whole life that just joined the PDGA and is now rated at a 1000. Im not trying to take anything away from JJ cuz he is a cool as kid and a great player and has great sportsmanship but hes been playing for like 10+ years.

I could have done the same thing. Just played unsactioned and practiced till i knew i was AWESOME and then joined the PDGA.

Lets just congradulate the kid on being a 1000 rated player however he did it.

Yes.

All rounds before DNF will be calculated for ratings, assuming the round has the usual minimum number of propagators. Heaven forbid if there are only 10 props to start the event and one DNFs after a round so no one gets ratings for the rest of the event

What updates are the touring players ratings based on. Will the december update be used to determine the touring players? The reason that I am asking is that I might be tempted to play a tournament next week if the points could move me over 1000 and gain my card for next year.

bruce_brakel

Looks like you'd need a pair of 1086 rounds to move your average up to 1000. Or four 1043 rounds. With 20 relatively recent rounds in the data base, it is hard to move your average very quickly.

Will the higher rounds not replace the lower rounds? I have a couple of over 1000 rounds from the USDGC waiting to be put in. My other rounds at the USDGC should replace some of my lower scores. That should set me up for a move right? How many scores are used? I can see not moving if they are just added in. But I should be able to make some progress if the replacement is happening.

Newer rounds will replace the oldest rounds if they are using the max number of rounds for you.

They are using 22 rounds from your last 13 months, because they use the last 12 months and then use up to 12 months more to get 20 rounds if you don't have 20 in the last 12. So you get 22 because the next tournament is a four rounder.

Your rating of 991 is based on 22 rounds right now. If you add 2 rounds you will lose those old four where you averaged about 996. So the situation is worse than I said. Not only do you need some super rounds to pull yourself higher but you are losing some above average rounds the next time you play and they calculate ratings.

To cut out most of your stinky rounds, which would be rounds I'd be happy to take when you're done with them :D, you need about 10 rounds of consistent 1000+ golf. It's just math, and the time order where you shot those disappointing rounds.

I just want to know if I have time to get 1 more tournament in next week and have it count on my ratings. It'll knock off I tournament I played last year in late Nov. that I would really like to get rid of!

I'm not sure any more events will get in the next update, even those this weekend. I think PDGA HQ has or soon will have completed processeing the last batch of events to be included in this next ratings update. We're already more than half thru with the processing.

chuck, sorry for a minutiae question, but do you know if the VPO AM weekend is/will be included in Dec update? the "unofficial" ratings do not show up on the Tour pages.

ck34
Nov 27 2004, 11:43 PM
VPO Am wasn't one that I processed but there are at least four other batches of events I haven't seen. PDGA HQ and Roger, who rarely posts, are the only ones who see all the events in each batch. Rodney and I just do part of them and don't see it all.

Ive been looking at a lot of players player ratings detail and have noticed that quite a few people still have rounds from OVER 12 months ago counting towards their rating and these people have WAY more then 20 rated rounds. IE Barry Schultz, Kenny Climo, Mike Randolf, Cam Todd, Steve Rico, Walt Haney. Those are some pros to name a few and there are ALOT of Ams that also have rounds that are 12 months or more old. Arent those supposed to DROP off of your rating??? I dont have any as of yet but i know i have some in Oct of 03 all the way threw Aprl of 04 that i want to DROP off when they get to be 12 months old;) So my question is do rated rounds stop couting toward your rating and drop off after 12 months or not???

Luke Butch
Nov 29 2004, 06:35 PM
It goes back 12 months from your most recent tournament that currently counted towards your rating.
It does not go back 12 months from the most recent tournament included in the last stats update or from the current date.

You're rounds will dop off when a tournament that you play more than a year after those is updated in your rating. Probably the May? update to get all of those old rounds gone, depending on how recent the stats update used for it is.

chris
Nov 29 2004, 06:36 PM
It's 1 year from the last tournament you've played that is in the ratings update. The last tournament Barry has played which as been rated was Aug 29, 04' which means every tournament from aug 30, 03' will be counted.

chris
Nov 29 2004, 06:41 PM
This sucks since last year I shot horrible at the Turkey Shootout. This year the shootout was on Nov 14th, last year the tournament was on the 16th which means instead of taking my new ratings and replacing my bad rounds from last year, they both will count. :( ( unless they are going to count my ratings from the tournament coming up this weekend which doesn't sound like they will ) either way I"m hoping to move up 1 point!!

Nov 29 2004, 06:52 PM
last 12 months i've played 3 tournys 1 with no ratings info so do i add up the rating for the 2 tournys that have ratings info or do i add up my last 20 rated rounds
3 tournys in last year = 920
last 20 rated rounds = 929

so where do they come up with the 940 i'm rated at ?

chris
Nov 29 2004, 06:57 PM
they only go back 1 year if you have more than 20 rounds, otherwise they'll go back up to 2 years or more? to get 20 rounds. Then they drop your worst 15% which = 940

Never mind...I just saw it on my stats page...and that means its included right?

sandalman
Dec 02 2004, 11:27 AM
it means it probably will be included. ratings details tells you what is included already. stats page tells you what events have been submitted in such a way that they have temporary unofficial ratings. but being on the stats page does not gaurantee an event will be in the next update - its just a reasonable bet that it will be.

sandalman

anyone know why some of the "unoffical" ratings that had been showing up on the Tour pages are now not available (no Show Ratings link) ?

girlie
Dec 06 2004, 04:47 PM
Those events are currently being reviewed for accuracy and will be included in the next ratings update scheduled for sometime around Dec 21.

Once unofficial results are included in the stats updates - the unofficial ratings go away and with the next ratings update - the official ratings will appear!

Hint. Hint. It would be nice if they would leave the unofficial ratings up until the next update (and just note that they are unofficial). From my understanding, those unofficial ratings will not change that much if the TD entered all the info correctly.

girlie, maybe i'm dumb nut i stil dont get why the "unofficial" numbers need to disappear while the "official" number are being calc'd. do they occupy the same rows/fields in the database?

if some of the unofficial ratings are changed when they become official, who cares what they used to be? we all know that they are unofficial and subject to change until included in a ratings release. (and sometimes subject to cahnge even after  )

Joel and you "averaged" 962 rounds. Meanwhile the top 2 in Int "averaged" 970+ rounds...

All divisions were treated as playing the same tees....

Question for the Ratings Powers-That-Be:
Is there anyway to correct this, since the TD hasn't? All Pro and Advanced divisions played the longs, while the Intermediates and Recreational divisions played the 11 short tees.

Hey Sandals,

Yur knot dumb. :)

I'm sure that there is some reason out there for the unofficial ratings to disappear once they are included in the stats updates. BUT, maybe there is no material reason.

It certainly helps me to know which events have already been included in my rating and which events are about to be included in the next update.

I don't see it as a negative, I rather enjoy seeing the preliminary round ratings come in when scores are first posted and sometimes it's obvious that the ratings are way off from initial data entry.

My rating will probably stay the same when they come out.

Had some great rounds and then had some blowups. I am hoping that my rounds at Zebulon from the summer(and they are getting included finally in the winter update) are going to be decent....but then again Snoop shot 3 rounds of 44 while I was shooting 60s.

COMPLETE - TOOL. The best part about this message is that you wrote, "and take advanced of it". Are you so wrapped up in the thought of playing more ADVANCED tournaments that you even accidentally write about it on here? That's one of the funniest things I've seen on this board in a while.

We've never said it will be the 15th. We've always said about the 15th or mid-month, but that wasn't good enough for some people. The important thing is to publish them between Sunday and Tuesday so there's some time for players and TDs to adjust their divisions if necessary before events the following weekend. So, rather than guess if it's going to be the Sunday before or after the 15th, we picked after or on.

BTW, Roger completed the first pass of the ratings late last night for us to review. We won't tell when they'll be posted between Sunday and Tuesday so we won't interfere with any 'heavy' wagering on what time.

The database crashed. Some weird glitch happens that some users get currupted/deleted, and that makes every post of theirs disappear as well as every thread they ever started and all posts that were replies to any post of theirs. It happened to me before.

They can restore it. But you might have to ask.
