Jan 21 2005, 06:49 PM
What kind of solutions do we have on that rock? Maybe we can gather some of the bark mulch that is laying everywhere and get a few up to speed. The tee boxes will be a chore all on there own. I only know of a couple that really need the maintanance. If you have not been there in a few weeks, I think you might be supprised at how well the neighborhood has been respecting the park. This is becoming my most favorite spot in A town. I am wondering if the changes at Lago will draw more of a crowd to the kitty. Time will tell.

vinnie
Jan 21 2005, 06:57 PM
Its lots of work....but elavate the tee boxes. Use rocks from the course to build up boarders around the tee box and fill them with mulch and dirt.

esalazar
Jan 21 2005, 07:02 PM
bring yo wheel barrels and shovels!! where can we get mulch or some other fill!!

Jan 21 2005, 07:11 PM
You know, the company I work for just happens to do excavation. How many dump truck loads of land fill do we need. This will be one of the biggest contributions I have ever put up. I can make this happen if the loads dont just sit in piles there. This is gonna take some serious labor. Maybe a load up front and load in the back of the park. Or maybe just split a load in front and back. I can have the dump truck ready at a drop of a dime. Let me know if this would benefit the park or just create ugly dirt piles.

esalazar
Jan 21 2005, 07:14 PM
what kind of fill mike??

Jan 21 2005, 07:18 PM
I will have to inquire, I think I can get rock, dirt, mulch, but dont hold me to it yet. Would the rain just wash the boxes away or should we try to stake up some kinda wood to hold the fill in place. I think 13 will be the worst issue. That almost needs to be a concrete teebox. Its all downhill rock.

Big problem with some of the tee signs #5,6,7, all need to be moved along with a number of others. Were lucky nobody has broken a hand yet. Also a number of boxes need wook. Rick is trying to get a bobcat for movinf the land fill. Would we have to have that approved by the neighborhood? We are going to re-locate the trouoble making tee signs as well. I will find out next week about the land fill. Maybe I can get a variety of filler to get the tee boxes right were we need them. We have packers/vibrators as well. This thing will be off the hook. I will get with the CEO's wife as she is familiar with disc golf. She may allow a couple of laborors to come pack all the tee boxes and help move dirt.

so what will we have to do for 13- build a form, so we can create a level box? do we just build a frame out of lumber, then fill and pack, or what?

The course is in better shape then I had thought. Moving some of the tee markers, and giving some of the boxes more definition is most of it.
http://centxdglove.com/cathollow/brushycreekmuddiscgolfmap.jpg

#5's box needs work
#11's box needs to be leveled
#13 needs lots of work

Many tee markers need to be moved, or the edge of the tee box needs to be better defined. We need some of those markers that stick in the ground and have the hairy tops coming out of the ground, like at Pease...

Just some random thought as the coffee starts kickin in

esalazar
Jan 23 2005, 01:01 PM
lets get a move on this!! who is going to contact the mud district? i think we can maybe move a few boxes a little in order to lessen the work needed!! on 13 , it will take a hell of a lot of fill and time to level.maybe if we relocate this box it would reduce the work required. On 11 it should be a lot easier to move the box as well.I think we can accomplish this without taking away from the hole.
just my thoughts!! tee signs will be an easy fix!!

Jan 23 2005, 01:06 PM
Efrain, give me a shout this morning. I gotta see you this morning. For 13 I believe we need to make a temporary tee box so the framing does not get jacked with. Lets start making it happen guys. I have alot to do today but I will see if the depot has any scrap lumber. Vinnie, can we get any donations to go towards the park?

Been doing some digging and found a liitle bit of info.
Here is a map of the entire community:
MUD (http://www.brushymud.com/filecabinet/Catalogue_SUMMER/21ParkLocations.pdf)

And here is general info about the DG course, including cards, course map, and the MUD contact:

info page (http://www.brushymud.com/RulesandRegulations.ivnu)

I dont mind contacting this person, but I should probably speak with Ed first and hear his thoughts. I dont want to jump the gun and screw with any kind of relationship that might have already been devolped. Somebody PM me the Coffeys #.

So we call the course Cat Hollow. In the course directory, it is listed as Brushy Creek DGC. It is in the Brush Creek MUD, In the Liberty Walk Greenbelt. I think this needs to be addressed. We either need to call the course something different, or get the name changed on the course directory.
Thoughts?

I went out today and was suprised to see the trash picked up from #11's tee box.

I took my wagon and some trash bags, hauled out five, 30 gallon trash bags full of plastic water/gatorade bottles and beer/coke cans. The majority of the trash seams to be wash through from the rains and construction trash.

My most interesting peice of trash was the pair of 'stained' shorts on hole #1... very disturbing, not sure I want to know the story behind those.

Plenty more peices of plastic and bottles in the creek/wash area by holes 17 and 18.

Ask not what your Disc Golf course can do for you, ask What can you do for your Disc Golf course.

okay- just got off the phone with Edman. The guy he has talked to in the past is not the contact they have posted in the web page. The guy he has talked to (he did not have the name- he was driving and will get it to me later) is the one responsible for most of the work out there. John Houck designed the course, basically flagging it. Then this guy, built all those 'greens' and the tee markers and did lots of the clearing. Apparantly he is a board member of the Brushy Creek MUD. Ed thinks he will be enthusiastic about the work we want to do, but hesitant to let us do it- as in he may want he and his crew to do the work. ( no please, can we do it :p ). But who knows. Ed also has some trash cans we can put out there, we just need to go pick em up. (well really, this guy was supposed to go pick up trash cans months ago- but some of us can do it, right?) Another plus is this guy is a disc golfer him self.

So no real progress as of yet, just some background info. Ed will get me the contact info he has for this guy, then I will contcat him first, then the posted contact, and go from there. I would like to have a pretty specific idea of exactly what we want to do, and where we want to do it before I make the call- so if you have a thought, or dont like one of the ideas posted, now is your chance to speak up. I will try to summarize what we want to do, and post it later or tomorrow, and we can go from there.

Jan 24 2005, 07:50 PM
I believe it would be a good idea to put pota cans on holes 1, 13, and 9. This way there will be a porta can for the women on each end of the course and one in the middle. All locations are trail accessable which will make it easy for a truck to drop off.

Thanks for the update Nix.

I think we need to brake off into teams. Everything must be adressed and time can cause the issues not to be adressed. How about Efi and I take care of the benches. Then when/if I can have the crushed gravel delivered we work together with Ricks babcat to scatter the rock to the desired locations. At least with the rock in the locations to use we would'nt have to brake our back moving the pile around. While we are prepping the boxes Rick could be pulling up the tee signs with another crew relocating them. Just a thought. I hope this guy lets us do the work.

esalazar
Jan 25 2005, 02:48 PM

Jan 25 2005, 09:07 PM
Well said Efrain, a thought on the tee signs, they are going to be pretty hard to move, what about leaving them where they are and just cutting them off to about 2' high and re welding the plates. they could then be used as the tee line with another marker of some sort on the other side, just a thought, I realize some are not properly located to be used as a tee marker but most of the dangerous ones could be.

Jan 26 2005, 10:19 AM
cut a foot or so of pipe out the middle of the tee pole and reattach the two ends together. At least then they will be short and no one will back hand into them. And then again a well placed sledge hammer on the concrete near the pole , most times will seperate the concrete for the pole and the the pole will slide out the ground.
But keep in mind getting a welder around that park, :o

So Edman contacted Katie who is the posted contact on the website. Ed gave Katie a brief rundown, and requested The Mans (the guy who supposedly did most the work out there) info. Katie said she would call The Man immediately, and help plea the case.
Edman has not heard back. If Ed still has not heard back in the next couple of days, he will contact The Man directly.
Ed suggested we proceed with planning a work day, and that at least initially the MUD will only want to be aware of our presence. I think we should try and schedule this, and if need be we can reschedule it-if there is a reason that justifies it.
I would think sacrificing a Saturday of golf would get the most people out.
(plus volunteering is proven to lower scores. really.)
I think some of us should take a walk thru, and really lay out a plan of attack- get it down on paper so we can mark accomplishments off our list.

How about we cut the tee off at say 2' and set the top section back in the ground across the box low enough to be safe, 2' or so and we have our line set. Only need a hack saw and lots of new blades and a shovel. This seems to be the easiest and fastest way to fix the tee signs I can think of. Can come back and put caps on the cut pipe or fill with concrete.

esalazar
Jan 27 2005, 11:06 PM
somebody has to have a cordless sawzall!! there needs to be probably 12" allowed for re-setting the signs into the ground . however there are many options for re-installing such as sleeving between the cut post and the new lowered pole.kind of like a thread less coupling type connection whitch can be welded or fastened with set screws or something!!

Edman spoke with David- who is Scotts boss. Scott is the discgolfer who got a lot of the stuff done out there. David is very nice and easy to work with and will be a great asset. I have Davids # and will call him today, to set up a walk thru, and just breifly go over the game plan. Ed said David said they have a back hoe and 2 crew guys that we can use. David will also be picking up some trash cans from Ed. I would like to have one of you guys go with me thru the walk thru if we can schedule it right- Ricky has expressed an intrest in this, so I will try to cordinate with him.

We need to make some decisions on the tee-markers. Do we want to dig them up, and relocate? Do we want to chop and reweld or drill back on so they are shorter? There might have been other suggestions, but thats all I remember right now. Share your thoughts please...

A well placed sledge hammer will break lose the concrete hold on the pipe and the pipe will slide out the ground.
Digging holes out there will be fun.

Josh I thought you sent out a list of tools needed, but i couldn't find it. I have stuff like a big wheelbarrow, rakes, extension pole tree saw, hedge clippers (manual), gas powered weed eater. I can't carry all that in my little Honda though so if that stuff might be needed, someone with a truck would have to swing by my place beforehand.

nix
Jan 28 2005, 02:37 PM
Great John- I can pick that stuff up- we can make arrangements next week!

Spoke with Daivd- very nice guy. He will meet Ricky and I at the course early next week and walk thru with us, and plan the work day. An additional work day might be planned to coordinate his crew.

I know Vinnie thinks a swift sledge hammer will knock those posts right out, but my back is a little concerned with the "easy" part of that. Seems like a shortned post would really reduce our work load. Does anyone have objections to a 18" tee-sign? Then, like Ricky and Efrain suggested, we just sawzall it, and reweld or drill back into place.

I am not in construction, so my ignorance might be pretty apparannt- but if any of you have a better grasp of the best way to level some of those boxes, I would like to hear your thoughts. I dont want to sound like an idiot talking to David about how we can tackle this stuff...

Jan 28 2005, 03:27 PM
I believe chopping the poles and rewelding them would be more time consuming and labor intensive. If the sawzaw is available we will need about 10 blades just to make sure we get all of them cut. I would suggest using the bobcat to pull all poles out of the ground and hauling them back to hole one for a single cut at the concrete level. With this done we would be ready to repour the concrete in the original holes with shorter tee signs. Not to short as they are the markers for the tee box. I think 24" would be good. Distance00 could also attach the new plates while they are all at hole one. I believe this method would be the fastest and least labor for everybody. After all poles are out Rick could relocate the crushed rock to the tee boxes that needs it and then it is just a matter of getting those up to speed. After the pile of fill is spread to its places we can start setting the new tee signs. Let me know what you guys think.

or
b) chop the tee post, removing a 10" section, and then reweld or drill back to post

and dikchead is suggesting we do BOTH, but also haul them all into one spot, and have Jeff perform additional work to the signs, take them all back to the boxes, and reinstall???

I thought we were trying to keep this simple. Digging those things up is a major chore. My vote is for the chop and drop.

no offense dikchead, and i know there is none taken, just putting the 'nice' tone out there.

Jan 28 2005, 04:22 PM
Ok prick, this is what I am contemplating,

I think it would be quick and easy to just wrap a chain around the post and pull it up with the bucket of the Bob Cat. Rick is still getting the bobcat correct? Would'nt that be easy and just drive them back to one for maintanance?

Cutting and re-welding would be a trmendous amount of work. Even trying to use a sleeve method would just not be productive. I believe all posts can be done in one day. Cut all posts at concrete level to eliminate the old concrete and shorten the length. Re-seat the shorter poles in the original holes with concrete. We have to make total use of the Bob Cat while in our posession. I dont know if we will have it for one day or what.

nix
Jan 28 2005, 04:27 PM
I am not positive about the bobcat at this point- but we should have the backhoe.

Do you think this will damage the posts?

Jan 28 2005, 04:32 PM
Not at all. If we are worried about the chains scratching the paint off we can wrap it with a towel before putting chains around it.

nix
Jan 28 2005, 04:50 PM
okay, well then that does not sound too difficult- assuming we can get the equip to all the tees

Jan 28 2005, 05:02 PM
One way to know whether this is a sure fire way to do it would be finding out from the original builders how deep the holes are dug. I would assume 18", but this is the is the factor that will make or brake us. Now the issue is who is gonna pay for the new concrete? Who wants to be in charge of setting the new poles in place "LEVEL". We need to get a game plan.

Removing Tee sigsn - Rick Wright
Enhancement of tee signs - Distance00
Resetting Tee sings.?
Leveling of Tee boxes - grunion and ????
Trash detail - KT and ??? I thought the ladies were going to set this one out????
Benches - Efi and grunion

Lets build off of this and try to get some kind of plan of attack going. Changes and and suggestions are welcome

sleeves would be really easy mike give me the o.d. and i can pre-cut sleeves on the clock! chop cut section out which equals 2 cuts . pre-drill over sized holes in sleeves then mark and tap pre existing poles and bolt together easy! or whatever !!

Jan 28 2005, 05:30 PM
I am familiar with sleeves as I do have the electrician skils as well. What I am seeing is that you will need more tools, more cutts, drilling is required, and painting will need to be done to prevent rust. I know its a good idea but we are pressed for time. I am afraid this will cause more down time as the next team is waiting for previous work to be finished befort they can start. Distance is gonna need his time with the posts as well. Agree or no?

What I was suggesting was just cut the tee sign off 2' or 18" fromm the ground and resetting the top section directly across the tee box at the same height or close as the section we leave in the ground. No welding or screwing needed. Then cap the cut off section or fill with concrete. Very simple and fast. KISS method :D

OOOOHHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhh!!!

keep it simple stupid

Jan 28 2005, 08:57 PM
I love it.!! But how about this. What about cutting the poles at 32 inches (closer to traditional and still low enough) while they are still in the ground and distance00 (jeff??) just adds the new sign on the top? No welding, screwing, or pouring concrete needed on the pole end of things. I dont know how Distance plans to mount the new signs but we are moving right along now. :DFaster and still effective. Thanks for starting off the idea train Rick. Distance, we need to hear your input! Can we have the signs ready if we get you the info ASAP?!?!?!?

Ideas about mounting the new signs are welcome.

I can get a measuring wheel for the weekend. That wheel looking thing that surveyors use to measure footage by walking along with. This would work really good. When I can get out there to do it would most likely be next weekend. Let me know if this time frame is acceptable. Can we get an updated schedule going of work to be done? I know there has been some changes to the original plan. Lets bring everyone up to speed.

Jan 31 2005, 01:54 PM
Any certain way we need to cut the pole to benefit the way you are mounting the new tee signs? Angled, straight, or does it matter? Let us know. Do you believe 32" will be low enough with the tee signs or should we drop the measurement more to incorporate the height with the new tee sign?

Even though the weather sucked, the walk thru was great! The two guys we met with, David and Allen (?) are the two that have done most of the work out there. We discussed lots of things, and they were receptive to almost all of it. Ricky and I will be drawing up a plan of attack, and send it to these guys, who will get the materials needed and get to work. They do not want to go out there with equipment for a while, unitl it dries out. They know when the TWC is, and they know we are ready to get this done- but they dont want their stuff tearing the course, or the equipment. Once we deliver the hole by hole list, they will contact us when they are ready to work. That will make it a little tough to schedule a work day- but I know I can count on lots of help from you guys and gals at the drop of a hat-right?

A couple of things:
They like their tee-signs. They do not want new covers put on them, and they do not want to shorten them. They will relocate the boxes for us, to more appropraite placements. The only one we think we will have to dig up is #6. Keep in mind that those posts are 5-8' in the ground. Yes thats right, feet. Many of the boxes will have granite dumped on them, and we will rake and level them out. #13 will have to be framed with some rocks a little, then the fill and level.
These guys are proud of their course, and very receptive to the whole disc golf thing. This is a great relationship, and will only get better. Stay tuned for updates.

NO WORK DAY FEB. 5TH! GO TO THE ZILKER ICE BOWL!

thanks guys- but I have not done a lot yet. Ed laid the ground work, and Ricky was out there too!
Sorry Jeff- I am sure you could make some great signs- but honestly, there is really nothing wrong with the signs that are there now. These guys are proud of the hard work they have put into the course, and don't want to make any drastic changes- especially their signs.

The MUD is the ones who requested we reschedule the work day. They will be doing the bulk of the work, and they use heavy equipment. We have 2 months to work with, so we should be okay as far as time frames. I, for one, an very thankful these guys want to take that load off of us.
David will be picking up trash barrels from Ed very soon, so trash sould not be as big of a problem as in the past. As cDub said, feel free to pick up trash every time you are there. As for rocks, they will pick up the large ones for us. THen we will get granite fill to spread over the top.
IF you think of other improvements you would like to see out there, we can include them in our list and see what they think.
This is all good stuff, and will only get better. Once they see how recpetive the golfers are of thier efforts, they will be even more willing to help in the future- but really, there is not a lot more we could ask of them right now...

Feb 02 2005, 07:10 PM
Yea, the tee signs were set with a hole ram pounding the rock that they kept hitting untill the holes were a min. 3' deep and then they punched a hole with the stinger on the hole ram a couple more feet, set the pipe in, plumb, fill hole with concrete. I don't think we could pull them out with a bobcat. There solution was to move the tee boxes away from them. They will provide all the crushed granite we need and do any major tree trimming, we in return will supply labor to fill and level the boxes. Crushed granite is what they use for all there trails, great stuff. As Josh said they are more than willing to help out and even said they were going to mow a week or so before the TWC so the course would be looking good.

A 200' but fairly accurate thumber is a great weapon on this course. If you dont have that- be accurate on your drives.

I don't think we will need anymore fill- I will let you know for sure when i hear back from them, but if you have to make a call, i would say pass on it for now...Thanks for the efforts though- just cause we dont use it does not mean its not appreciated!!

The course is looking great! The MUD has spread granite on tee boxes 1-5. There have been at least 4 trash barrels put out on the course. #5 has been worked pretty good, just a few trees cut back and now the box is in good shape. Mulch has been spread around several baskets. #13 has been improved big time- the box has been built up and framed out with large rocks, filled with granite and leveled. It is not 100% level, but it is 100 times better then what it was. Seems they stopped after #5 (except #13) and I am sure the will continue to work as the weather should cooperate for a while. bring on the sun!!

Feb 20 2005, 01:57 PM
The sun just might make an appearance today and I see no rain on the radar at all. Looks like conditions will be pretty close to playing indoors with a humid 75 degree 13mph fan blowing on you. I still dont see the wind they are claiming is out there. Looks like with the exception of a couple slick spots it will be a great day to disc.

Feb 20 2005, 02:20 PM
fingers crossed!! dry sun dry!!

Feb 20 2005, 02:32 PM
The sun is peaking its head out. I figured she would burn through all this haze and make an appearance today. Looks like it will be partly cloudy and maybe if we get lucky, the back side of that cloud cover will make it over our heads to reveal full sunshine.

courses is looking good vinnie!!! 13's t-box is fixed!! #6 tee sign is gone!! trash pick-up and nit picking still need to be done!! :D

johne
Feb 21 2005, 02:07 PM
Speaking of hole 9. This is the hole that from the regular teebox the shot is a straight one, but there's some alternate teebox that turns it into a righty hyzer shot. Why did someone feel the need to make this alternate teebox? I don't get it.

Feb 21 2005, 02:10 PM
V i was hanging with the old crew a lil bit...sorry ya missed me!!

Johne that idear was scrapped. The original box is what we will stick with.

Way to go Efi!! Put the mouth in his place!! I noticed he has not been on the board since then!! :o

Feb 21 2005, 02:30 PM

Feb 21 2005, 04:11 PM
we need tee box 6 longer

esalazar
Feb 21 2005, 04:26 PM
what do you have in mind?? as of now , it would have to be completely moved in order to extend it!!

nix
Feb 21 2005, 04:45 PM
yes, vinnie I need more explanation then that. remember, boxes have not been flagged yet- i know you and Hellman want to participate in that... The idea behind moving the tee sign was so the original box can stay where it is- only the marker is set way behind the actual box...

esalazar
Feb 21 2005, 05:20 PM
i personally think that box is fine now that the tee sign is out of the way!! nice short finese hole!! anyone going out today???

vinnie
Feb 21 2005, 05:26 PM
#6?
I just don't want to see the hole turned into a big hyzer.
To mark the tee back to avoid that there needs to been more gravel. so there is not a step up.

esalazar
Feb 21 2005, 05:30 PM
with the post gone , the box can simply be marked wherever you want it. it could be flagged where we played it in the mini, and that pretty much eliminates the hyzer!!

anyone going out today????

Feb 21 2005, 07:47 PM
Ok biatches. I been busy all day. I had my missed putts to Efrain. How many pushes? I think it was a fun game overall but thanks for your input M_N_N. How about that 60 foot putt on 4 that pushed that hole. That was sweet. I get a big applause from the people standing around but no mention from M_N_N. Mmmmmm just my anus handed to me??? Thats so wrong. Anytime you want to go again Efi.

Feb 21 2005, 07:56 PM
hey Vinnie, how about making the hole a thumber? :D

..... I know shut my donkey

Feb 22 2005, 03:54 PM
12 pack? Man you did'nt even stick around to drink it with us? You played fair and I played well. It was fun to finally have a nice open course to throw with you on. Nix, get some of this action. It is fun and brings out the best in my game. Although I dont know about raising the stakes. If you had won all 18 maybe that would have covered your 12. HEHEHE. When is the mini gonna start again?

Feb 22 2005, 09:56 PM
Grunion, I thought you were running it? so when's it start? /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Feb 22 2005, 10:35 PM
:oHey now, did I ever say that? Well at least if I ran it I would never be late. :DI think Efrain was saying something about running one, right Efi???

esalazar
Feb 22 2005, 11:02 PM
I DONT THINK ANY ONE PERSON SHOULD BE STUCK WITH THE RESPONSIBILITY OF RUNNING THIS EVERY SINGLE WEEK, UNLESS SOMEONE CHOOSES TO DO SO. AS WE ENDED LAST YEAR, WE HAD A GOOD CORE GROUP THAT PARTICIPATED IN THIS MINI VERY REGULAR.WHEN MARTIN COULD NO LONGER RUN IT RICKY , JOSH ,CHRIS W AND MYSELF ALL HELPED OUT AND TRIED TO COORDINATE WEEK BY WEEK. i HAVE NO PROBLEM HELPING , HOWEVER I CAN NOT MAKE IT EVERY TIME. PROBABLY 3 OUT OF FOUR I WILL MAKE!!! :D
