On Saturday morning before the start of the first leg of the Blue Ridge Area Winter League at Elk Creek those in attendance voted on two important changes to the league format. We voted (1) to make the points system use ODDS points format and (2) to hold the awards/Skins Game at Timber Ridge DGC on February 26 directly after the conclusion of the final round.
Here is a post of the new updated flyer
The Piedmont DGC and Hill Billy Huckers are proud to announce Blue Ridge Area Winter League 2005. The league will consist of eight one-day tournaments that run on Saturdays from December 12 through February 26. BRAWL 2005 will showcase the courses of Western Virginia including Elk Creek DGC in Appomattox, Peaks View Park in Lynchburg, Fishburn Park in Roanoke, Golden Hills in Christiansburg and Timber Ridge DGC in Lowry. The awards ceremony will be held after completion of the final tournament at Timber Ridge DGC.
Registration ends at 9:40, tee off at 10:00. Open $10, Am $5, Ladies/Rec/Junior $2. Ace Pool will be offered for $1.
BRAWL 2005 is a points series with a simple format. Two divisions will be offered (Open and Am). We will follow the ODDS format of points. A player recieves one point for entering, one point for each person beaten and bonus points for the top 5 finishers (7-1st, 4-2nd, 3-3rd-2-4th,1-5th.) A player's best six finishes may be used in the final results.
A portion of the entry fee at each one-day tournament will be withheld from the Open and Am divisions. This money goes toward a trophy that will have the Open and Am division winners names engraved on it, payout for the top four Ams and a Skins Match for the top four Open point leaders to be held at the awards ceremony.
Ladies, Rec and Junior divisions will also be offered at each tournament, but do not compete in the points series.
We strongly encourage golfers of all skill levels to attend!

Thanks to all who showed on Saturday! We had good weather and the course was in the best shape it's ever been. Congrats to Jeff Peters who hit the first ever ace at Timber Ridge on hole 6 during the second round!
The Open field was a tight race with a three-way tie for first and only five strokes separated the field of seven! Adam V won it on the third hole of the sudden-death playoff with a birdie two. Daniel Eubank won by eight strokes to take top amateur honors.

I am trying and trying to do something here in centeral VA. I can not even get golfers togeather for causual rounds until 2PM or later. Hysell will tell you that there is alot of apathy around Richmond. Hell! when we had monthlys we could not even get as many as 5 people out to play. I am still tring to stir the waters and will contintiue I have even sent the "Times Dispatch" an e-mail asking if they would be interested to come out and do a story on the 9th Battlefield Open this year. I have yet to hear back from them. I aplaude your work in western VA and hope to make it out there for a couple of the winter events!

That's not true. I have never heard of this word "alot".
Jimmy, you are just out of the loop. Some locals are going to Pratt and then Loriella this weekend. Others are going to the Grange for New Year's Eve.
There is no club in Richmond because no one responsible has started one. We are waiting for some motivated individual to take control. Of course, every club must answer to me as is custom in MY state.

I was there alone and as I played the course I started to notice that I was getting surrounded. after playing 10 then 11 I noticed that the bultin board was trashed and the trash can was fliped and trash thrown every where. I figured that my body parts might be next so I left. I have never heard of any trouble there other that a story of someone beating the "H" out of someone with a disc. That had nothing to do with the inhabitants around the course!

My comment about Gillies was not racist. I have no idea who lives in that neighbourhood. Just that whoever lives there does not put a priority on visual asthetics. I have also heard stories from other golfers indicating it is a troubled area. On top of that, I do not enjoy playing the course.
On the other hand, I do like woods. Living in them is cool too!
cbaines
Jan 04 2005, 11:10 AM
well im so sorry that gillies doesnt have that "visual asthetic" that you like, but if we had a city that actually cared about its parks other than maymont we might have a park that is more soothing to the eye. its not like we havent tried to clean up it just seems to accumulate no matter how much we clean. it also may have to do with people like yourself, peeps that come from out of town or just helmets that see the shape the park is in and just continue to trash the place. also who have you talked to tell you "stories"...newbs...because thats what they are stories. the several years that i have played there i have neither heard or experienced any problems. im sorry if i come across a little hostile, but its like me saying something about your course.
-if you have nothing nice to say, just keep your mouth shut.-

oh i wasnt offended just a little over defensive, because ive seen what we have tried to do at gillies and just to have your efforts thwarted by ignorant a-holes it becomes frustrating. i mean i see other parks and wish ours could be all trim an proper but that is just the way the cookie crumbles when you have a city that wants to cut spending on parks and rec and give a large severance package, totaling over 200,000 dollars to the city manager, and the cheif of police, and for what, nothing. but that is a different gripe. and hey all i have to say about being a pompass is, join the club man.

You guys are jealous of naked peter. After all, he is the current advanced EDGE League champ. His goal is to shoot a 45 this year. He will be 45 yrs old and wants to shoot his age. In the past few weeks he has shot a few 48's and 47's when we were playing together. Those scores are pretty good considering that he throws only a Z-Predator. I heard today that his goal is to win the open division this year. Of course it won't happen, he'll have to beat me and I know the holes he struggles on and I have the keys to the baskets. Since he can't reach hole 4, I will put the basket on the edge of the hill.
BTW, there was a recent incident on the news about a naked middle aged white man chasing a girl around her apartment complex. Call crime stoppers at 780-1000 and give some info about your local naked guy. Maybe he'll cut down on his exposure.

oh so peter is not gonna be a bagger this season and move up to open, well he's in for a great surprise when he sees im moving on up myself. and if i do remember correctly my average was way better than his last year along w/ a few others. just because he had a fluke in finals doesnt make him good. even w/ his z predator.

Jan 06 2005, 12:55 AM
So you are moving from Intermedate to Advanced? I think that is where you started out last year.
averages?!? i crushed adv. this summer in points and avg. Watch out next year (if i'm still in ric) cuz i just might go open myself. Beware Hysell.

Jeff
I do not live far from Spotsy and would like to attend the meeting. Is there any rule stating that you need to live in Spotsy or F'burg to be a member of this club? Who came up with this "FUDGE" thing? Pretty cool! In all of my electrical years of experance I have NEVER been associated with any Union.

Jimmy, that's one of the things we will need to discuss. Since we have not formally formed anything, there are a lot of topics to hash out. My personal opinion - no, not a requirement to be from Spotsy or Fredericksburg, just have to have the interest in Spotsy Disc Golf and willing to participate.
so we are talking about 12 teams.is there anything on any teams being dropped...like for instance last place finish team will be dropped for next year ..or you will make room for them..can you have two teams from the same course

and is chain_hunter, hunter from last season? cuz if thats the case you did crush in average, but if not, i dont see how you crushed in averages and missed the playoffs by one point. that just makes no sense.

Just be like team Seneca and take whoever you want.. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
I'm going recruiting in NC this year: Walter, Larry, Schweb, Mad Dawg, Mandi... In fact we might not even have anyone from the state of Virginia on our team this year.
Just kidding... Truthfully, we like to have only people from our 'region' be on team Blue Ridge (Team Cinderella/Team Darkhorse/Team Foul Mood!) Last year, we had to go out of our region for Will Lewis to fill our Masters slot.
Watch out! This year we will actually have more than one Open player on our team. This year when we meet Team Seneca in the finals, David will have a few more stones in his slingshot for Goliath!!!!!!!!!!
Oh Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!! !! :D:D:D:D

HTD- yes, 3/19-20 , my bad
jeff- to avoid further confusion-ok, adv=955 or below- last year for this event it was 935. no int.
eog/mtl- carlton is working on a radl team i believe, perhaps you can find a spot there.
jimmy- come to the meeting, all are welcome.
jon mills- camping is almost always available at the grange
hysell- indiantown is on the eastern shore. when are you going to vegas? $25 buy in at my place 1/16.
Indian Town Is on the Eastern Shore .If you cross the CBBT its the third light take a right and keep going straight till you hit the course.I played it with no baskets last year a few times. Its a nice course a couple of open holes ,hole over a softball feild, then the tunnel shots 12 to 14 foot wide fairways with the same height

yes to playing before poker- warm weather has course relatively clear (for january) of bovine debris at this point (they go away better when they're not frozen). lots of newborn calves though.
virginia team invitational will go as follows with 12 teams:
prelims- teams will be grouped in 2 6 team sections and play a match against each team in their section.
semi's- team with the best record in section a will play team with 2nd best record from section b and vice versa.
finals- winners of above matches.
payout to 1st and 2nd overall as well as team with best record from each section and individual seeds with best records in their section. winning team, team mvp's get trophies, plus winning team gets the old milk bucket travelling trophy.
no huge payouts but the most fun event i played last year if i say so myself. hawk hollow is worth the trip by itself, cow flop or not.

I'm getting fired up already about the Team Challenge!!! This is loads of fun if you didn't come last year. Hawk Hollow is the best course in Virginia, hands down. Team play adds more of a passion: You're not just playing for yourself. Nine holes of Match Play is an exciting and intense format. Each hole, each shot and each point becomes important.
I can honestly say that I look forward to this tournament in 2005 than any other tournament...

tentatively will be Whorley, Vanderslice, Woods, Hoeppner, Bowman, Gonzalez, Climo, Reading, and Spaceghost

I too think the Steelers are the domniate tean in the AFC. They did not show it yesterday. The Steeler defence was there but Rothliesburger showed he is a rookie in the real world now. The Steelers got VERY LUCKY! Lets hope Rothleisburger has now had his awakening and plays better. He has GOT TO! GO STEELERS!
Jeff_Peters
Jan 16 2005, 01:29 PM
I'll agree with the Steelers being lucky, it's not too often in the NFL you get a win when all of the following happens to you :
1) give up a punt return for TD
2) give up an INT for TD
3) future hall-of-fame running back fumbles in the final 6:00 while driving for game-sealing score
4) you give a good NFL kicker not 1, but 2 chances to beat you in the final 2:00 by having your rookie QB throw an INT
But then again, the defense didn't allow a TD. And, these are the Steelers who got hosed a few years ago in Tennessee on a crap running into the kicker call, so I guess you could say they were due. Maybe this is finally Cowher's year, who knows.

rumor has it that the legendary king mullet himself will be making an appearance. bloop, bloop, bloop.
Chris Hysell
Jan 17 2005, 07:14 PM
Oh no, not THE KING MULLET.
It's going to snow for sure.
Sorry guys but I'm already partnered.
Now for some future insight. It's so cool that there will be more donors in the m division this year. I'm sorry, I forgot that everyone gets better when they turn 40.
ZillaMullet. You have your goals right but you may need to change your plans. When you are in a tournament and have a good 1st round, you need to quit so that your PR will go up. More rounds will dilute your PR.
I won't be playing very many tournaments this year. I just bought a new truck and now I need to find a place to live. The good news is that I think I've found a converted chicken coupe that is closer to Dorey and Gillies and the Beach and NN. I'm gonna get gooderer.
thanks for the advice chris i forgot about that.play a good first round then quit.. :D
well that was the old me....except i threw a bad first round then quit, dun dun dun ,but not anymore i say... /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Chris Hysell

i guess that qualifies as master-baiting, and you're so good at it too! :o
let's keep the record straight, only one of us rookies has been talking smack about the easy money in master's and it hasn't been me.

I can not spell at all! I do not even talk very good. So I spell everything like I think it sounds. Sorry! Best I can do.
i will be at dorey/gillies on sat. tearin up adv. (?) with roomie (bo) - since cbaines ditched me (jk). look for some nasty weather and scores.
hysell and/or biscoe - what is the deal with the team challenge and will there be a team richmond?
Chris Hysell
Jan 18 2005, 10:14 PM
Team Richmond? How would that happen? We can't get 5 players to show up for a monthly. How will we get more players to leave town and compete?
that may be true hysell, but you've seen me at tournys out of richmond. it's all about the hell i call work, it holds me back. i am gonna try to play in alot more tourneys this year. just got my membership a few weeks ago.

is there going to be any restriction on what players can be on what team? do you actually have to be from the certain area where your team is or is it just any assortment of people that the captain asks?
hvnafit
Jan 19 2005, 07:45 AM
Chris
Why don't you talk to the loop? I do not know how many is on a team but here goes.
Pro: Chris Hysell; Ryan Lugo; Ty if he can be found?
Masters: Dan G; Will Lewis; Chris Hysell (if Ty is found)
Adv: Hunter; Chris Baines
Women: We have no women in Richmond unless you can talk Coleen into playing; Maybe Angee (Ty's wife)
Mullets: Myself; maybe Dan Sweet
Not a dominating team but a team any way!?
If this is unrealistic. I think our new Disc Golf Club (Battlefield/ Spotsy DGC) might want to put a team into the tournament. Guess I will bring it up in our Feb. meeting.

team event is invite only, hence Virginia Team Invitational. if your area/club would like to field a team i am adding names to the list for next year (2006) at this point. field for 2005 was basically set immediately after 2004 event.
