A big thanks to Ernie for taking the torch and putting in the time and energy as a volunteer to run the BIGGEST Am event in the world. Larry thanks for posting the info and for running this event the last (3) years that we've been to BG.

I just wanted to add the ONLINE REGISTRATION LINK (http://www.sunkingdiscs.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=1449) for the Sun King Disc Sport Doubles at Kereiakes & Lovers Lane.

I appreicate the Dude's comments along the way about the tourney, as well as the additional posts from others adding. I have only played in three tourney's in my life ( although I am 29 and have played on and off since High School), and never this biggie. I found going to the BG webiste and coming here was plenty of info - dare I say I feel prepared; a little effort to look for what you need goes a long way. Great work to all, and I can't wait for the weekend.

I'm sure Dude didn't mean to be dis-tasteful in his comments. They were primarily directed at the North/South tradition that dates back in history. He means well I'm sure. Apoligise DUDE, and let's get back to regulary scheduled programming. This is the biggest tnmt in history, and BGDG is putting on a remarkable event, that is/will not be easy, but they are successful. Thanks BGDG.

Now, are the courses Cart friendly for those of us that have push carts, and can we get them around?, and have we setteled the dress attire collared/no collar?

Something one of the older local guys put me up on a good idea for the BG Am's. Before you leave town to come to Kentucky, go to the bank and cash in for a few $2 bills. The more the better. Then while you're in town for the weekend, start slipping them here and there wherever you stop. Gas stations, restaurants, liquor stores..... If enough of the disc golfers did this, the local businesses would raise a brow. After the first day, people would wonder where all these $2 bills are coming from. In the long run, it would prove what a force disc golf can have on a community from an economical view. I'm hearing all the time how much more exposure DG would get if there were more revenue circulated. We as the players know how much it means to us. But the folks in your town council who have never heard of such a sport may have something else planned for that unused park property. My town is starving for more courses, we just have to prove the benefits to people who aren't very interested.
So, get a wad of $2 bills and bring them to Bowling Green. Spend them sparingly, so you can spread them around. Thats planting the seed. Soon, you should be able to use the news articles or commentary to your advantage. Let them know you're a disc golfer when you spend the $2 bills. If each registered player takes only 1 $2 bill and spends it somewhere down there, thats already $1,440 dollars you contribute back to their community, almost trackable since nobody really spends those things now days. Just food for thought!
I think if my city knew that if they were to build a few more courses close enough to link a tournament like this together, and the results could bring in an extra $500,000+ EVERY YEAR, it would be done. I say $500,000 because I know when I come down, other than my tourney fee, I'll spend $100+ on hotels, food, gas, and other stuff. Take that times the minimum 720 people that come in town. You do the math.

I'm just keeping this bumped to the top every now and then. This isn't the only place us golfers check so for this to work better, tell anyone you can get ahold of. myspace, your local club message board, or where ever you may bump into anyone attending this event. It's for the game, folks!

So, is it illegal to just write "DISC GOLF" in big letters across the front of the bills? Because that would make people aware of where the money was coming from while not messing with the clerks at your local stores (your standard cash register only has 4 slots for cash, right?).

I also like the idea of drawing sunglasses on the presidents before spending the money.

Then again there is no reason that couldn't just be done on $2 bills!

(But remember, don't spend 'em at the flymart!)

By law it's illegal to deface government property, but we all have received a bill with writing on it. I think if you just write in the border it would catch people attention. I'm in! As for JD, you have to know him to understand his humor. JD is a great guy to know and to play with. There's been times that I've been suckin it up and JD makes a comment that makes me laugh and I forget about the poor play I just made.

Forgiven here, and I hope elswhere also. Please players, don't write on $2.00 bills, if the message got through as intended, it could backfire. Give the cashire a sticker or something, or leave a sticker on the counter, and say thanks for having us out of towners.

Yes, PLEASE don't write on the bills. there's no need. How often do you see a cashier giving you back a $2 bill as change? Or see them spent, for that matter. Most people are saving them for good luck or something. I'm telling you guys, this could be VERY EFFECTIVE! I'm confident this would make the papers, get DG some buzz.

Single bottles, starting at $1.50 and up. I'm looking forward to a nice chocolate stout. It's nice to get a box and pick up an assortment to enjoy! Ah, BG AMS!

All Int/Rec Divisions: Innova Dx Destroyer, Discraft FLX SS Surge,Gateway Supersoft Magic

All Jr Divisions: Discraft FLX SS Surge,Gateway Supersoft Magic

As for Phil Moore that will be decided early next week, the only reason they wouldn't use it is if there were lots of rain that was to come in on Thur or thru the weekend as this coursre will be real swampy. There are actually a couple really good beer stores right there. The one he is referring to is called Greenwood Spirit Shoppe or the Cheese Shoppe, the name has changed a few times. It is right on Scottsville Rd across from Fazolli's. There is another great store on down Three Spring Road called Chuck Evans that also caries a pretty good selection of micro and craft brews.

I can't make the map but the 3 I know of are real easy to get too. 1st one is right in front of the mall on scottsville rd. If you go to the 4 way intersection of scottsville rd and campbell ln(to the left) and Lovers ln(to the right) take a left. This is coming from I-65 towards town. Best Buy will be on the left of the intersection. Take a left and go about 2-3 miles till you see a Blockbuster video on the left. Shannigans will be tucked in the last part of the strip mall. If you keep going stright like your going to Preston Miller you'll see the 3rd one to the left right before you get to Preston. It sits across the rd from a service station/taco bell. Sorry I forgot the name to this one but it's where the mico brewery is located. You can't miss it.

Thats GREAT!. And if you didn't already plan on it, try to get people to buy some of the $2 bills off you. As long as you spread a few around, let some of the people who didn't catch wind of this in on the movement. I firmly believe this will get a strong buzz around town even after we all go back home.

As far as the home brew goes, I'll be at Econolodge. I plan on getting with a couple of the Louisville guys and playing some Hold 'Em as well. Yeah, Todd at at the Best Western as well. Unless you like Stout, that beer was probably not for you. I am bringing more of a selection this time! :D

To me a Shockwave is a less stable version of a Gateway Demon. It is much more stable than a Roc or Buzzz.

dobbins66
Mar 20 2008, 11:58 AM
Cart friendly question:
I've played all but Hobson and here's my take.

Lovers - A Cart pullers dream, Grassy with gentle slopes (other than a couple).
Griffin - Back Nine is open and smooth - the front will present a couple challenging places but it's usable.
Preston - This could present the biggest challenge. Holes are short and in tight places in the woods. Might be ok but carrying a bag is probably easier.
Hobson - From what I've heard it should be easy cart material.

JHBlader86
Mar 20 2008, 12:06 PM
To answer the cart friendliness...

Lovers- Oh yeah!
Hobson- A few holes would be rough, but all in all yes.
Preston- Sorta. Depends on the hole really.
Griffin- Holes 1, 2, 8, & 9 not really. Everything else is fine.

If you have a cart then yeah you use it. Some holes on the wooded courses may be a little troublesome but for the most part you shouldnt have to worry about anything.

So, I thought the $2 bill idea was great one. I went to my credit union yesterday to pick up 15 of them. However, they do not offer that denomination unless I wanted to order a pack. Get this, the pack has a minimum of 2,000 bills! Needless to say I passed on that one and am now hoping to buy some from one of you. Why don't those of you with access (or $4,000 haha) bring extra to sell to those who either don't know about this or can't get any. Can't wait till we leave on Wed.!! I expect that convenience stores and fast food places get $2 bills during the week. If you ask them for change in $2 bills (if they have any), you might be able to collect enough of them before heading to BG. They are probably happy to get them out of their till and might even sell what they have to you.

Any course has the potential to get muddy after as much rain as we have had here this winter. However most drain pretty well on most of the holes. Keriakes and Lovers drains pretty well and I am assuming with the layout Franklin will drain well too, Hobson, Griffin, Preston, and Chalybeate(if played) drain pretty well but have a couple of problem areas if it has rained recently. Phil Moore's problem is that it is at the bottom of some hills with a large creek running beside some of the holes.

Moore is a really nice course that if it is ready I believe will be fun to play. However, I went out today as well and IMHO I think we are going to have to have a week of sunny dry weather for it to be there.

They cannot predict the weather, so they are doing the best they can. They want us to play the best courses possible; they just do not know if it will be flooded. From HB's last post on the club website it does seem as if Phil Moore is going to be played after all, even if it's muddy. But he didnt say whether it would be for sure. I wish some word got out so you guys would know, but until then we have to play the waiting game like we did with the pools. I guess everyone just needs to be patient. I have the same problem when I go to the courses I have never played before, I can almost never find the street address for the park and I don't think I can even type in coordinates. I don't know what kind of GPS you have but I usually use that PDGA course link and click on the map. Then my GPS has an entry for intersections and I type in the closest one I can find. I would think the main concern should be the wear on the course. A few hundred rounds in a short time span on a really muddy course could mean months (if not years) of healing. Save the course, it will be there next year! Plus, Hobson rules...

There is a POI file you can input into your GPS with over 1800 disc golf courses in the US. Not sure how accurate they all are. As I found out the fountain hills course isn't located correctly. But other than that I've found no problems with it. You have to register to download it. And I believe it depends on what GPS you have, how it is installed.

It is 13,000'+ and Par 72.

We have an old ball golf course here in town and we're trying to work with the city on locating a course there. We'd only need a small portion of it. The city mows it every week during the spring and summer and there would be minimal clearing, if any at all. There are mounds, ponds, large fairways, some groves of trees. It's by a river and can flood under extreme circumstances, but it's not being used. We're trying to get the city to buy baskets and let us install it. If worse comes to worse, we'll attempt some fundraisers and offer to raise half, which might work. Anybody interested in fundraiser discs? ;)

I can only remember 1 or 2 of these BG ams in the past 7-8 years that the weather has actually been nice.....looks like another blowing green open to me........bring it on!

The TD also said that anybody that does not check in during the mandatory Friday night meeting, needs to send him an email, fivesmalls@insightbb.com, letting him know, and check in with the course official 30 minutes before the start of the first round, or that spot will be given to the first person on a long waiting list.

How many of you all have ever mowed a disc golf course for free with your own mower and gas? Most of us pick up trash, remove broken limbs, and general upkeep. However I have only met 1 person that has mowed any part of any course in the above fashion. The parks department here is not mowing anything yet because the grass has just started to grow in spots and not at all in others. We had a low of 25 and high of 44 with snow earlier this week.

About mowing, I've used my own weed eater on our course many times. The last time my buddy mowed he bent his blade. I keep my mower at home! ;) But I've done my share of course work in 24 years. rWc3523

Points- For those of you that are flying, call your airline now. Several hundred flight's cancelled over the next 2 days. Confirm flight.

Other Point- Mowing, yes, but not during a time period that produced rain like they have had at BG.

Another Point- Out of the field of sweet 16, 1/4 come from Carolina and Kentucky. This may hold true through Sunday.

Guess it all comes down to how much rain ends up falling Thur night and Friday. I'm indeed prepared to 'man up' as someone put it as disc golf is all about adversity! (although mowed fairways would be nice lol)... and for the record I've used my blade trimmer on many a fairway which would destroy a lawnmower, but thats just how we roll in Bama :)

Unless Friday's rain completely pisses on Phil Moore, you're more than likely going to be playing it.
