Pretty entertaining stuff there. If this tourney is looking like it is going to as many holes needed per round just to accomadate the wait list, shame on you Rick. You have let these Texans really effect your judgement. I'm sure lots of folks have better things to do that weekend than stand around waiting to play, and I'm sure alot of them will find that other something to do. If this tourney stays civilized I will bring my 2 baskets, and yes Vinnie I will set them up and take them down daily. Just got off the bay and checked my comp & all I can say is...wow. I have to call Rick because the parks dept needs to be contacted first & foremost before doing anything about a new course.Plus, I don't want to compromise the original course in any way, shape or form just to cater to those who didn't get in.Don't get me wrong...I want everyone to play that wants to play, but this thing fills early every year...I think everyone is aware of that. Then there is the issue of players packs, tee shirts, etc. to deal with at the last minute.Let me make some calls & see what is going on before we start discussing adding holes to make another course, okay ??

And what would happen to final nine?

Oh no! It's turning into Waco! I used to love playing Cameron at the charity open...then came Woodway...then came Cameron East...no, wait, I love Cameron East. Pecan Park was a lot of fun and the came Pioneer...another great course. Anyway, I agree with the fellers. This tournament is so popular because everyone loves to play this course. Hopefully, the extra course will follow suit with Cameron East & Pioneer. we'll see.
I just hope Rick's not adding some scrub course just to accomodate extra players. Methinks he may need to learn the importance of capping the field. Too many players can turn a great tournament to miserable and spilling over into a less than great course doesn't help.
By the way, I say let's use constructive criticism with Rick until he's got a year under his belt and THEN we can slam him when we don't like what he's doing. hahaha

The idea of a second course for Victoria ROCKS. A real, planned course...........not something thrown up for those who didn't get registered in time.
Kevin is right, this thing always fills way early. And those of us who did what we needed to do (register), we shouldn't be inconvenienced in an effort to accomodate those who weren't smart enough to sign up early.
This is turning into an example of greed over good golf.

More does not always equal better.
I say let's keep the heat on Rick right now while things are in flux. :)
Here's a little TD Hint, from one: You can't be a nice guy to everyone. When you make sure that you satisfy everyone who is in your face because they aren't in and they are pressuring you to let them in, you end up screwing over the people who supported you most by registering early and making your planning so much easier to do. Set a field limit and stick to it. You have the opportunity to use these last two weeks to work on the little details and make the tourney run smoothly because the tournament is sold out and you have all the entries and you know the divisional totals. Choosing to run around like crazy trying to fit in all the people who didn't register in time will just take away time you could be using to prep for the event.
That's my experience, anyways. I just thought I would offer it for your consideration.

ok let me say a few things here -- this IS about trying to give the players the best Experience possible --there are 118 players & 24 holes which means a few people are currently going to have to play with people not in their division (24*5=120) not all divisions signed up in increments of 5 -- to make things the way they need to be - we are looking at some more possibilities --- one being adding a few more holes (this would mean 2 rounds of 27 for everybody) -- 2 adding another course -- (this would greatly ease the pressure as well as help the flow of play -- yes it does open the event for a few more people but only to fill out fields that need it -- not fill to 5 on every card ) - downside is yes some people will be stuck playing a new course -- is it the one they used for texas 10 -- maybe -- maybe not -- again we have options -- this is something that the Victoria Club and I need to figure out -- i do like the colonels idea -- give me a year & then beat the #$*&$! out of me -- will update more as i know - thanks

adding another course -- (this would greatly ease the pressure as well as help the flow of play -- yes it does open the event for a few more people but only to fill out fields that need it -- not fill to 5 on every card ) - downside is yes some people will be stuck playing a new course -- is it the one they used for texas 10 --
If you go with the option of a second course, why would only some of us get stuck playing the new course?

Uh oh...
I signed up to play the Victoria Open on the Riverside course. There wasn't any mention of a second (temporary) course.
Adding a couple of extra baskets seems okay, but I won't play on another course because that isn't what I signed up for and it would result in giving me less instead of more.
Rick: you announced a cap of 110 players as recently as last week. Stick to it. It's too bad that folks have to be turned away from a popular tournament, but they need to get with the advanced registration program or suffer the consequences of their own inactions by being left out.
A few extra baskets/holes is one thing, but making anyone play on a secondary (and substandard) course is quite another thing. I want to know the answer to this before I show up in Victoria and find out at the players meeting from Vinnie.

OK... just got home. First off I'd like to say that RSDGC has busted #$*&$! raising funds to make this tourney better than it has ever been for everyone involved. Our main goal from this event was not to make money, but to give the participants a great experience & to donate to other events/causes. We do things in a democratic way around here now & all of the issues ...too many players/card problems/etc were discussed. The club is in agreement that there will not be another course for the open. I just talked to Rick & we are all in agreement that we will make this thing work & it will be a blast.I'm truly sorry for anyone who did not get in, but the club is working on another permanent course to be in the ground for next years tourney(not in fox bend). Fox Bend has been cleared & will not support the holes that it did before. Again, if you want a chance to play, get on the waiting list & next year...sign up early !!! I'm sure Rick will be on soon with more details but again, this tourney will be played on the Riverside course+a couple extra holes...that's it. Thanks you to everyone who has supported the club for this tourney and to those who signed up early & get ready for a fun event !! Kevin

Okay, Rick, I'm serious about consturtive criticism, so here goes... This is a long running tournament. To come in and add so many players that you have to add a course to accomodate players may take away from your credibility as a TD. There is a tradition behind this tournament that you don't know about. I (hopefully we) understand that, as a newbie, you will try to do new things, but Riverside is the big draw. Next year, be very aware of this. Cap the field and, as Sue said, reward the early registrants by capping the field and an making this an enjoyable tournament for all. It's not about making everyone happy, rather making this to remain one of the most loved tournaments. IMO, this is one of the most prestigious tournaments in Texas, payout and tier level aside, and an 84 player cap (4x21) would be perfectly acceptable. This tournament has as much history as any tournament in Texas, with the exception of Waterloo, so keep it respectable and reward the first 84, maybe even 105 with smooth, fun play.
While I'm on the subject, be very careful not to tamper too much with the tradition of any long running, already successful tournament. A little experimentation is fine here and there, but don't stray too much. It never hurts to ask advice of prior TDs either, especially the ones who are well respected veterans who have been playing and running tournaments for many years. Listen to your players, but don't let them run over you. Of course, you'll have to weed out the ones who just bit** about everything that's not perfectly the way they think it should be. For those people, just tell them to come back and see you when they've run a tournament or two, because, believe me, one they've been on the other side of the table, they're not nearly as quick to bark. I guess you already know this first hand. One more thing...make sure and use the LSDGA for what it was founded for back in '99 when Texas disc golf was headed for chaos. Cooperation amongst Texas TDs. Get to know some of the big boys (TDs). They're great allies and mentors. Okay, now that's it. :)

(If not, then I have a table or two that I can bring.) I've got chips, KEM cards, etc.
Yeah...a list ought to be started so we know who all is playing and we can bring enough stuff.
If you want to PM me, I'll start building a list. Melissa will be playing too... Why would there be a separate "Women's Poker Division" at this thing? Seems pretty silly to me...

Very cool to have card assignments made out this far in advance Rick!!!
I was glad to be flexible! I checked it over pretty good, and it looks like a good card assignment job Rick. I don't know how you could've done much better with the divisional splits they way they are...
If a MA2 player drops out, will you be replacing them with a MA2, or will you take the first name off the wait list regardless of division? That could mean a frequent re-shuffling of card assignments over the next week or so! :D
Thanks!

I would say the 2 round tables able to seat 8 people could easily fit in there. Plus, the room that it sits off of could easily fit 3 tables that size. RickDanger
Feb 09 2007, 12:19 PM
gimme a bit to work on it & i will let you know - ace pot is from entire lone star series -- so it should be fairly big -- was last hit in december in conroe & there have been 3 with the macgregor this weekend so i will post it soon let me go do the numbers -- larry --regarding people dropping out - for the most part thats how it would work -- however say look at the MPG & the MM1 i have 6 of 1 & 4 of the other -- so if a MPG dropped out i would go down to the first MPG or the first MM1 to let them on -- same thing with MA2 if someone dropped out of there i would call either the first MA2, MG1 or maybe even FW2 on the list -- however just for the records unless someone from MPO, MPM, MA3 drops out -- these are as is -i did mess up & put ma1 in the ma2 division so thats gonna change a bit --- **** did i screw up -- 3 hours of hard work yesterday down the drain

larry --regarding people dropping out - for the most part thats how it would work -- however say look at the MPG & the MM1 i have 6 of 1 & 4 of the other -- so if a MPG dropped out i would go down to the first MPG or the first MM1 to let them on -- same thing with MA2 if someone dropped out of there i would call either the first MA2, MG1 or maybe even FW2 on the list
That sounds like a good way to handle it Rick...it keeps you from having to reshuffle that whole card assignment list with every change. Given that it took you about 3 hours to do that first one - the less changes to it the better right? :D Besides...you've got another tournament to run tomorrow and we all know...you need your beauty rest!

Feb 09 2007, 02:52 PM
wow -- let me post this again -- this is CARD ASSIGNMENTS -- NOT HOLE ASSIGNMENTS -- I am aware that this is not the order that groups are placed on the holes for play -- but this the order that I USED TO MANAGE THE CARDS --- also regarding the card placements -- if anyone wants to know what i used to determine who was on what card -- then open an excel spreadsheet & in the formula bar type =rand() then hit F9 do that down the list for each division & then go to click DATA > SORT & choose the column & tell it to sort to either ascending or descending -- thanks --

I'll reserve a seat. How about an additional $5 bounty to be paid to the player that knocks you out?
I like bounties. :D They always add an extra element of fun to the game.
So let's recap what we've got so far:
$20 buy-in plus a $5 bounty.
5000 chips.
15 minute blind schedule:
100/200
200/400
300/600
break and color-up.(1hr mark)
500/1000
1000/2000
2000/4000
break. (2hr mark)
4000/8000
5000/10000
Players so far:
Hellman
Harris
Kruse
Markus
Sherri
Alex
Gimp-?
Roz-?
Chile-?
Ware-?
V-man-?
What night (or nights) are we gonna play? We can probably start one game at 9pm on Friday night. Should be finished by 11:30 at the latest...still plenty of time to get some sleep. Same gig on Saturday night too?
What about running 1 gun-slinger at each table? Gun-slinger payout will be in the amount of 1 buy-in.
Assuming we fill 2 tables of 10 each, and 2 gun-slinger positions, then I'd propose the following payout scheme:
1 - $180
2 - $100
3 - $50
4 - $40
5 - $30
gs1 -$20
gs2 -$20
What do you guys think?

Yeah Victoria :D
Hey, I am going to attempt to do an economic impact report for this tournament like I did a couple of years back for Piney Woods. This proved helpful for many TD's in approaching businesses for sposnorship. Here is what it means for you:
--Start to save all of your receipts or keep a log on everything you spend money on during your travels to and while in Victoria for the Vic Open. Think how many miles you will travel in from. Be sure to split the cost of the hotel, gas if you are traveling with others.
--I'll pass out data sheets before the players meeting. Keep detailed and accurate records throughout your stay.
--Turn in the sheet at the end and be eligible for a cool prize package.
Awesome :p
