I'm the new President of the Bowling Green Disc Golf Club, and as of right now the dates of the tourney are posted on our website. The tournament will be pre-registration only either through the mail or TitleDisc.com. We are considering limiting the field this year so a cut off is being decided. We may vote on it at our next meeting, but it'll probably be in Feb. before we decide. Right now, the Communcations Director and myself are revamping the club internally due to old wounds between the "old guard" and fmr. members and we are also working on new membership drives as well as incentives so alot of internal work is going on. The BG Ams. while a priority, is not the top priority at the moment. BUT we will post info. about the tourney as soon as any news happens.

We have it planned. The courses are set, as well as final 9 layouts. We're just not sure if there is going to be cut off for registration. I mean 554 players this past yr. was awesome, but it was still 554 players, and very few people as officials to look over the players and courses. Right now we're working on several course improvements, mainly Hobson and Preston Miller so things are progressing, its just that there are other priorities that have to be dealt with. The BG Ams is still months away so we'll keep you updated.

I'm pretty sure that only one person from MI would be making such claims. Ron, how long do you think it will take Crevice to get the paperwork for Moccasin Lake? My player rating went down because the only tourney that counted was the mini-canyon...So now it will go up like 20 points next time if the local TDs can manage to get those results in by the next update.

Maybe Am Worlds should be played in Blowing Green every other year. 554 disc golfers at Blowing Green. How many at Am Worlds last year. Before anyone gets to worked up, I know the events are different, but I would think the PDGA would provide some major support for that tourney.
if that ever occurs, that would be something for the tourism trade in BG to rival the Corvette Factory.
BG ams, then Bell South, then Am-world, then Pro-Worlds.

Here is a list of my duties...
1. Provide leadership (Well I'm here NOW OBEY ME!)
2. Supervise activities of Staff (I see you so good job!)
3. Keep myself informed (this one is odd)
4. Conduct meetings (Okay lets get started!)
5. Set agenda (This look good?)
6. Problem solver (my cure: get over it!)
7. Develop budget (all $1200 dollars of it)
8. Conduct bylaw changes
9. Conduct officer removal procedures (exept for me)
I really dont do that much after all. But the easiet job is Club Services Officer. He just simply stores our discs at his house and even he was reluctant to do it LOL.

I dont mean to sound like I'm lazy or dont care. I very much care about the club and want to do a good job. What I mean is I'm not going to overwork myself and get stressed out this year. I too have a job and am attending school which is why I dont want to overexert myself. Most of the work for the BG Ams. and BG Open was already finished before I took office so I really dont need to do much work for those tournaments anyway. I'm still getting my feet wet, and dont want to dive right on in. I am still seeing what I have gotten myself into and if it will be a good or bad decision. But dont let my inexperience sway you from coming to BG. my passion for disc golf is HUGE, and I am making sure the BG Ams and Open are successes. I'm even going to consider a BG Ams. Doubles for either next yr. or the yr. after. So I am working hard, but not to the point where It'll burn me out.
I hope you understand.

Well we dont run the Bell South tournaments. That's HB Clark's tournaments. He is a fmr. member of the club who I have invited back, but for some reason keeps denying. He asked us if we would join the BellSouth series by adding our tournaments but we decided to wait till next yr. before we decide. Apparently the older members dont trust HB, but I like the guy. He's dont alot of great things for my colleges disc golf team.
As for Am Worlds, I think we may have put in a bid for it last year, or it may have been Southern Nationals. I couldnt tell you as I wasnt a member of the club at the time, but we certainly have tried to get at least one major here. If we push hard enough though maybe we'll get one in the next 5 yrs.
And nothing will ever rival the tourism that the corvettes bring. The police have to literally block off the streets to let the long rows of corvettes drive through. The event is huge, and my dad works as the Corvette Plant so he keeps me informed when they are so I know to avoid driving that day.

Hey all just thought I would comment on a few notes I have seen. Glad to see the info on the tourney already being requested.
1. We are doing pre-registration only for the first time due to a few things, the main one being so that we can let divisions know before they get here where they will be playing. I had the unfortunate (TD) duty of having to move the Adv. Women last year to the others courses. This will allow us to know exactly how many courses we will be using and what all is needed to hopefully make improvements for the overall tournament. I know we may lose some that won't know till that Friday and I am sorry all I can suggest is pre-register and as long as you let me know by Friday night I will refund your money.
2. We are not limiting the field just pre-registration only.
3. The sign-up info is on the www.bgdg.org (http://www.bgdg.org) under tournaments - am championships if you want to do it by snail mail.
4. Title disc said they would have 2007 events up after the first of the year. I will check with them if it is not up by the 1st Friday of that year.
5. You may send your money anytime you are ready to part with it.
6. Am-worlds - We did consider and sort of sent in a bid, truefully we just don't have the Pro players or enough volunteers to put on an event for the whole week. As for Pro worlds the majority of our club currently are pro's we very few but growing Am's and we like the Pro players don't have enough to put on a week long event. We may in the future but for right now we just have to do what we can by hosting the 2 big April events.
7. You can email me for any info and I will try and respond on here so you will get current info. lbledsoejr@alltel.net

How much is the host hotel per night? What would someone expect to spend during this trip? not counting traveling thanks
Last year, I stayed at Motel 6 in BG (booked a reservation online), it was cheaper than the host hotel. I arrived in BG Thursday night, and stayed 3 nights, and my half was about $75. $50 spent prior for the tournament, $60-80ish for my gas donation(guessing, I didn't drive and bought two tanks of gas, as I recall). I spent about $75 at the fly mart, and probably another $100 (guessing high) on food/alcohol for the weekend. If my math's correct, that's about $380, which could be trimmed, if you live closer, or don't spend $$ at the flymart, or don't drink, or eat cheaper. The Motel 6 is right next to a WhiteCastle, so eating can be done pretty cheaply, just make sure you carry TP in your disc golf bag for emergencies that I was not able to deal with adequately at Kieriakes.

Just a quick question to all you players out there. What is it about Bowling Green that draws all of you here every year? I'm really curious because it amazes me to see over 500 people come to this tournament. I love my hometown and I love my courses, and I'm just taken back whenever I see the amount of people who visit to play disc golf, and how many people love talking about this tourney and the city. So, please, what is it about BG that all of you find fascinating? I love my hometown because of the people. I've been to several places, but nowhere have I been where I find more respect and courtesy than here. And about the courses, while theyre not as challenging as others i have played theyre still fun, and they all offer different varieties.

The reason I will be come this year is because I have heard nothing but good thing's about this tournament, the course's look great and playing against 275+ Advanced player's is a BIG +.
The diversity of the courses. From Hobson to White, many different kinds of shots are included. The courses in themselves are good, not great. But as a whole, definetly one of the best. How the tournament is run is excellent and playing against so many other players is just a bonus. The staff is great, one of the best I've been around.

Bowling Green is close to the geographic centerpoint of PDGA members. It also may be big because it's big. That's not to say the event isn't run well and the courses are OK which is certainly true. But many other events are also run well and have decent or even better courses. The question is what separates BG from the others?
The Memorial is another example of an event that's bigger for reasons beyond the solid quality of the event in comparison to others. It's a 'cabin fever' getaway for northerners and it's big because it's big. It's similar to a restaurant that doesn't have any better food than others but it happens to currently be the 'in' place to go.

It is 120 miles from my home in Louisville, Ky.
The courses are all unique. Shotmakers!
550+ golfers is a no brainer.
I would love to see Bowling Green host an AM worlds.

I hope I'm not misinterpreting you, and if so please correct, so what you're saying is that its easy to get to, and its simply the "in" thing to do when it comes to disc golf? I'm not trying to make it sound like youre insulting the tourney, which I know youre not so please correct me if I have misinterpreted because thats what I'm reading.

You ask why BG has such a huge turnout. I'm saying that BG does as good a job as many other events and has courses equal to many other events that don't have 1/3 of the turnout. So, the reason must be something else these other events don't have. My suggestion is that geography, the 'in' factor and probably being early in the year all have something to do with it.

I went to BG for three years in a row from 01 to 03 because it was the first big tourney of the year and to get points to go to O4 Worlds. It is somewhat interesting to play against that many players, but the courses have lost some of the appeal to me. I'm not good enough to make the Final 9 therefore if I go this year it is to see many friends and get points for the 08 Worlds.

I have to agree with Chuck.
I went last year because:
-lots of friends were going
-sheer number of players
-quality of courses
-it's only 4 hours from Knoxville
-it is early in the season
But I am going back because:
-it really is well run
-I met great people
-I can guage my skills/improvement against a big field
-the players pack is awesome
-the fly-mart is huge
The whole atmosphere is the perfect way to start off the season!

Jan 14 2007, 06:20 PM
BTW, the "big because it's big" factor also has to do with BG being perceived as a points machine for those looking for Worlds invites.

Logistical questions:
1.
Last year I was able to get myself grouped with friends so we could car pool. If the pools are set the week before how do we make sure we end up in a pool with our car-poolers? Will you be taking special requests?
2.
At what point will you know what disc molds you will be selling with this year's stamp? I ask because rather than buy a certain disc before heading to BG I'd like to spend my money and get a 2007 BG Ams stamped disc.

There will be no problem with moving people around - either send me an email with those that need in the same pool or put it in your entry. I would prefer to know before Friday night if possible so I can go ahead and make the changes during the week.

I went to BG for 3 years in a row (97, 98 and 99)
I went to play golf in a new area of the country, and meet and play with people I have never played with before. At that time, they were getting between 100 and 130 in ADV, which at the time, still came close to beating worlds.
It was nice to play with people that lived some else besides WI and ILL. In addition, being the beginning of the Disc Golf year made us want to go play a in nicer weather (then WI). We had the itch to play!
I also made the finals 2 years in a row, so that was always an extra bonus.
I was only in High school at the time, so It was also nice be away from home without your parents, ya know!
That is why BG was popular to us in WI at the time.

If you are referring to the BG top ten then yes your right. At BG NC has had someone in the top 20 for three years running. The above posts refer to Am worlds which NC does very, very well in.
Now to my NC homies, Those guys in OK treated us very well last July. Lets play nice.

Joeseph, was referring to the fact that since 2002, North Carolina has brought home 7 world championships, 3 out of those seven have been Advanced Am. Champions ( David French, JJ, Jackie Smalls), In 2002 and in 2005 we had 2 in the top 4 of the advanced am field. Plus numerous other top 10 and top 20 places.I am not even getting into other divisons. I believe i have proved what I said, that NC doeas very well at Am Worlds.

What do guys think the turnout for the listed U-19 Division will be? My little brother, although a good golfer (920 despite being too busy with track/cc and work to golf at all between tournaments) is a bit money sensitive so if the turnout is good he may prereg for the U-19 division instead of advanced.
And as for me: As soon as I get the ol' paycheck tomorrow I shall be prereged. Hopefully I can make my first true impact in an advanced division more than just locally...

Before any tourny, I only putt for that week prior to the event. I am usually solid. Me personally I will prob practice putting every other day for about 2-3 weeks before the tourny. If I have my 1000 rated caddy again. I will do better, only because I will have a better head game. See everyone there. Quote me if you like. IN/IL will be a force to be reconded with this year. eff that, Hobson was my nemesis last year, I want another crack at it. You feel like you should shoot like 4-8 under there, and even par ends up being a pretty decent score. It's a tester, and a course that rounds out the variety of courses played in this tourney.
I've never played Franklin, but my opinion is that of a guy that's only been there once (for the tourney) and wants another crack at the courses I played last year.

I agree with GDL. Ive played @ BG for the last 3 years and I would hate to see the layout changed.
Franklin is a great course, and if you were to use it in place of anywhere I would have to say use it for Lovers Lane.
Hobson is the hardest course of the 4 and Lovers is the easiest.
The only thing that I will gaurentee about my performance is that I will get 1000 points and qualify for '08 worlds

I feel you guys on the memories of Hobson. It is a course that you should shoot 4 or 5 down but never do.
Do you know why that is?
It's a lucky course. All the good pros will tell you that. I hear there are rumblings of taking that off the Bowling Green Open event.
We need to move away from luck or at least limit it. The back nine of Hobson can just be silly. Compared to Franklin that course is just out dated.
I respect your opinion. Good luck at the BG Ams. I need to conquer The Memorial before I can talk smack about BG Ams.
Maybe I should become a 900 rated golfer before I talk smack!

Guess I don't know you well enough to get your sense of humor right off :) S'all good... all I know is my plan is 975-980 rated golf on average, minimum. If the other A3TAD01 area guys play better, they deserve to be ahead of me.
I really wish I could find time for a week at Highbridge Hills in March... I wonder if I can convince some friends a Spring Break in the Northwoods is worth it, a week at Highbridge is enough to bring anyone's course management skills up to pro level.
Anybody else from the area interested in the idea? :D Haha

JD Hazel / Larry Bledsoe / Somone in Bowling Green...
I attended the Bowling Green Ams last year. because my high school (and track practice) does not get out until Friday, we did not make it to Bowling Green until 11:00 pm (way too late to make registration) Larry told me to just show up Saturday morning at the players meeting and I would be taken care of. I just wanted to make sure before I sent in my money that I would be able to do this again.

This is why we're only doing pre-registration so there wont be any problems signing up. It's best to simply go to www.TitleDisc.com (http://www.TitleDisc.com) and register, but ask your parents if you can use their credit card.

:eek:recovering from my stroke. Uh, is there a reduced rate at the host hotel? $178 for two nights for a poor family like us is a little bit much. We might have to fall back to the Motel 6, even though the owner didn't want us putting outside. Larry, we are talking about the Best Western with the atrium, right? $89 bucks is a little steep. One could almost stay at the Marriott across the street from our course for that! ;) rWc3523

I thought the rate was $55 a night. The best western is just off the insterstane if you are paying that price - don't - make sure and ask for discgolf rate, also the real nice hotel with the atrium was the holiday inn and it is expensive. I may have a couple more hotels with discount rates here soon but will have to wait for there replies.

Lovers Lane
Kereiakes
White Park
Hobson Grove
Chalybeate
Franklin
Basil-Griffin
Preston Miller (basket missing and no teepads but will be completed by March 23)
Hopefully for next years Ams we'll get to use Phil Moore Park which is still in the development stage if I recall correctly. We were hoping it would be done by this spring, but for whatever reason I think its been pushed back until 2008. There is also a new park opening that is acquiring more land and there was some talk of looking at it as well for a potential course. Hopefully by 2010 we'll have 10 courses altogether and all our other courses fully equipped with new signs and pads. Personally, if I had the $$$ then I'd purchase one of the local ball golf courses, or at least try to co-own one where I could install some baskets and pads. And you can help by sending me $$$!!!

You dont have to own or co-own a ball golf course to install a disc golf course on it. Look at Crystal River plantation inn(Red Hawk) where the PLAYERS CUP is held at. Mike Barnett at SUNKING and Denny Ritner put lots of time into this course and our sport! All Im saying is anyone can do it, you just have to find the right course thats willing to allow it. There is also another disc course on a ball golf course in Dunedin,FL. Sorry, we may resume on the BG thread.

And concerning U-19 versus MA2... the argument is U-19 versus MA1 for him. He has a 919 rating so its a $30 differential for him, one he can't really afford with the amount the trip would cost him anyway. (plus he isn't really a 919 rated player right now... hasn't touched a disc since August due to athletics obligations so playing MA1 would be a brutally pointless thing for him)

(I didn't realize the 912 rated player was in his teens.)
It's not really about the ratings. It's about the opportunity to play on the top card with some pressure Yet all of these tournaments seem to attract players who have already won in INT and are likely to win again.
I am convinced (especially in INT) that if you have a first place finish under your belt it is time to move up.
Last year in INT there were all sorts of people with 909-914 ratings and previous top-3 finishes. Guess what?...by the end of the weekend they placed in the top 10 with rated rounds of 930-1000.
I understand that the onus is on me to make the top card. However, in my experience my best only gets me to the second card because all of these previous winners are bagging at the top.
kwilliamson
Feb 05 2007, 03:41 PM
I know alot of people don't put much stock in this ratings business, but as far as I'm concerned there is no such thing as bagging in divisions with rating caps. If my rating was 915 or over then I'd play advanced, but since I am one of the ratings you reference (906) I will continue to play AM2.
bgwvdave
Feb 05 2007, 05:48 PM
and you will continue to progress slowly. you are correct the rating is not everything but if you play a few tournaments a year it is a decent barometer of your ability. and just becasue you are rated 914 does nto mean you should play AM2 the reason people bag in this event is because of the sweeeet payout. kids that are fenoms can come here rated 955 plus with out accepting cash and place and get enough discs to take care of them for the year. play where you feel good playing but if you wnat to progress the best way to do it is play with people better than you. and the way to do that is move up. i did and it was the best thing ever for my game.
sammyshaheen
Feb 05 2007, 06:54 PM

This debate will always go around and around...
But let me ask you this Williamson:
When are you going to move up to ADV?
When your rating dictates that you must? after you've won an event? after BG?
For most people the answer is probably "when I'm ready". Don't you think you're ready once you won an INT event or two?
(I am still too in consistent in my tournament play to move up - I have a few 930 rated rounds but a lot of 880s. I'm moving up once my tournament and general play levels out.)
I am playing INT at BG this year because I want another run at the same courses as last year. I played like crap...I want to measure my progress over this first year of tournament play.
This chip on my shoulder is based on the fact that at a couple events last year the top finishers were openly bragging that they were going to place high and take all of the loot...and some of these guys already had won an INT event earlier in the year.
the_beastmaster
Feb 05 2007, 09:19 PM
I moved up when I was rated 872. But that was because I thought I was ready, and looking back I think that I was.
That said, there's actually a ratings cap for the Intermediate division. Advanced is subjective, but Intermediate has a hard-line number. I say if you're rating is 914 or under, go for it.
JRauch
Feb 05 2007, 09:26 PM
I moved up when I was rated 868 because I felt like I played 3 of the worst rounds of my life in a c teir and still took one of the last cahses in INT. After that I decided that if my worst golf was getting me to cash in INT then decent golf should get me to cash in ADV. Since then I have only missed chashing in 3 tournaments. Also, ratings don't mean a whole lot. I won an A teir over someone who was rated almost 50 pts higher than me at the time.
JHBlader86

Even though I dont have a rating I am playing advanced because I want to see how I stack up against better players than me. I play with alot of local pros and the advanced players here in BG, but I want to know how I compare to better players from around the country. I always have played intermediate and placed consistently in the Top 15 but never Top 10 so I figured its time I move up to learn from better players to improve myself to where I can get in the Top 10 consistently. This years BG Ams. is going to be not just a tournament, but a learning tool as well.

the reason people bag in this event is because of the sweeeet payout.
I played INT last year... finished tied for 12th I think... top 10% of the field. I got two discs, 1 champ, 1 KC Pro. How is that a sweet payout? My friend finished around 4th or 5th and got about 4 or 5 discs. Again...
The payout at BG is in the player's pack. I felt stiffed last year because I was not able to sign up until after the packs were gone. Before people say I should have signed up sooner, I didn't know I was going to have the weekend off until the weekend before.
This year I am signed up, and I hope the player's pack is just as nice as last year...
But back to my point... I don't think that the payout is what I would call sweet.
I played a C-Tier in Cookeville where I think 3 (maybe 4) baskets were given away across divisions... I placed tied for middle of the field in ADV and took home two Star discs... that's a sweet payout for a tournament.

Well let me clarify also that I have never won an AM2 sanctioned tournament.
I also am very inconsistant take a look at my last tournament.
the new year open on Jan 7th
first round 896, second round 1002 (my best round ever). And I took 4th.
This will also be my first trip to bowling green and I will most likely be playing the courses blind depending on when I get down there.
So yes I'm playing AM2 because my rating is under the cap, which means I can. But I also believe thats where I belong for this tournament.
If I'm lucky enough make the lead card this year and my rating is still under the AM2 cap(which I doubt it will be) then I'll play advanced next year.
I'm not one of those AMs that just play down to win tons of plastic so I can then sell them . Just ask my wife. She wishes I would sell some. The only people that get my discs when I win them is the upstart league I play in that needs discs every year. They are all donated, unless I play with them myself.
Either way I'm going to bowling green to have fun in a competitive enviroment and hopefully shoot rounds I'll be happy with. :)

I am sorry you felt like you didn't get much but for $30 those that got the players pack which was most you got over that in value. For those that didn't you still got a disc for the $30. When you figure all those that got the sweet players package for the $30 and those that got just one disc, there really just isn't much money left over to try and payout the numbers needed. Actually I have to lower the figures for the INT just so I can have money to payout as without it I wouldn't pay any. So to say it is not sweet, to me is crazy. Anyway just thought I would throw that out there.
