You've heard the scuttlebutt about how great this disc golf tournament is, and you want to play next year. How do you go about doing so? Straight from tournament director Steve Dodge, here's the skinny:

Yeah baby. In 07, we are shooting for a 200% payout, a $150 entry fee and a total payout approaching $40,000. Yeah baby! That would equate to over $3,000 for the Pro Open winner. Over $1,000 to 7th. And over $500 to the fellow in 24th! Yeah baby! Yeah baby! Yeah baby!

But next year, youve got to earn your way in. There are 5 ways to earn your way in to the 2007 MSDGC:

1. If you have competed in the three previous events:

2. If you cash in the 2006 MSDGC

3. If you qualify via the 2007 MSDGC Qualifiers

4. If you get in via the Five Spots Tournament

5. If you get a Sponsor Exempt Spot

Look for 2007 MSDGC Qualifier information once the tournament staff recovers from this year's event.

The requirements for women will be somewhat less stringent. Being a woman will do. At some point all the places will be filled, and even being a woman won't get you in.

But the first 16 women's spots will stay available till right before the event.

Maybe by then we'll have emulated traditional golf and gone to 50 years old for masters/seniors.

It's just not fun seeing added cash split between Pro Open and Pro Masters. Not to ruffle any feathers or anything, but there comes a time when you're 46, in denial, and not ready to step in that overpaid, overrated AM division called Pro Masters.

Denial is the key. Deep-seated, George W-esque denial. 46 is not old. 46 is not only smarter and better looking, we have better shoes now too.

Okay maybe that's far afield. To summarize, Pro Masters is silly. Better to have all those great players playing together.

The qualifiers will be announced between January 1st and April 1st as we determine which events will be qualifiers.

We have a couple handfuls of potential tourneys to include, and we would love to have suggestions for others. Perhaps someone knows of a quality event in Nebraska.

Speaking without permission from my TD elders, I suspect that the number of players that qualify will depend on the event. NT type events might qualify 5, A tiers might qualify 4, and so on.

And like the USDGC, it will be the top 5 (or 4 or 3 or 2) players that are not already qualified and/or registered.

Gotta post quick I could get banned any second. What Steve said about the qualifying tournaments. A certain number of spots. I like the basic USDGC formula, which we'll have to tweak to pretend to be different.

Dumpster. There will be recycling opportunities at Pyramids, but there will be a big dumpster. There will be at least as many portolets, and more if people request them. There will be ample toilet paper.

There will be all night long Keema-lit DDC. Remind me repeatedly that I said that.

The staff will have the highest party/tournament IQ in the history of the sport. It's a special form of well-masqued intelligence -- rare, special and sincere.

We will screw up in some fundamental way. This is the rule to break. In 2006 we didn't screw up in any fundamental way, besides the weather. We did screw up in a bunch of minor ways. We could minimize those.

It's so much fun it's so much fun my head it be burstin'.

Dang. The European Championships, the overseas PDGA Major, is the same weekend again as the MSDGC. Looks like the great players will be split in two. Dang again.

Here's my brilliant idea: change our date to the week before and arrange as cheap a group flight as possible from here for everyone who's going over the ocean.

A lot of our great ideas are really stoopid in the morning, but think about it. Travelling pros are still poor, and both events will be paying out something approaching top dollar (for disc golf at least). Our overall payout will be $35,000 plus probably $2,500 for Skins. Plus you get immortalized on our DVD. If we move weekends, then we come closer to our goal of helping to provide a lucrative pro tour. Lucrative enough so the best players don't have to quit and get a real job.

It's not good for both events to be on the same weekend. We want the best players at our event, too, and not just half of them.

Ruminating time.

Better also check with Dan Doyle regarding Skylands 2007. I'm thinking it might that week before Euro Open but maybe it's 2 weeks before.

Nov 20 2006, 08:34 PM
I think Dan is now going to run his NT in Vermont in September, and not run the Skylands NT. This may be wrong, so all clarification appreciated.

We'll definitely check to see how the grand scheme is impacted before finalizing our date.

We ran out of dedicated weekend in NEFA too; these conflicts only happen cause we're growing. And because all scheduling people are big goofballs whenever you don't get your pet weekend.

I LIKE it!

here's clarification....

There will NOT be a 2007 Skylands Classic. The weekend of August 17 - 19 is therefore "available", although BOB Graham and Eddie Nathan were requesting that date for the Jersey Jam, hoping it would provide a great lead-in to the MSDGC. Perhaps they'd be willing to take the weekend of August 11 & 12 so they'd still precede the MSDGC, or they could take the weekend originally scheduled for the MSDGC. But I'm not in any way part of those negotiations.

I'd also suggest checking with David Gentry at the PDGA. He has been aware for a short while that the possibility existed that the Skylands Classic wasn't going to be held and perhaps has already filled in that date with another event?

Why no Skylands Classic at Warwick in 2007????

A variety of factors, but here's the short answer: We're trading up.

I will TD a combination National Tour / B-Tier event at the Sugarbush Resort in Warren, Vermont the weekend of September 21 thru 23. I'll start a thread on this event shortly, but the bottom line is that we've got an awesome opportunity to raise the bar even higher for NT events at Sugarbush. The highlight of this venue is that Steve Brinster and I will design 1 or 2 18-hole layouts on their Robert Trent Jones Sr. ball golf course, along with a main Base course at the base of the ski hill and a Peak course that starts where a chairlift ride empties halfway up the ski mountain.

It's an amazing opportunity to create an event unlike any I've ever been associated with in my 30+ years playing Disc Golf. Having a Robert Trent Jones Sr ball golf course, on-site accomodations, restaurants, bars, shops, indoor pools, saunas, steam rooms, riding golf carts, a ski hill, and the gorgeous Mad River Valley of north-central Vermont with all the Autumn colors, along with some MAJOR sponsors and added cash, is a TD and course-designer fantasy come true.

The Skylands Flying Disc Club is a bit sad to let go of the Skylands Classic for 2007 but it'll give the club members time to "re-charge" and work on finishing up the Wolfe Woods course that will allow us to host an even better major event in 2008.

If the MSDGC stays on the last weekend of August as it has been, then I get to fly back for two events: MSDGC and WVO. If they move a week early, I guess I only get to fly back for one event, the MSDGC as two separate sets of flights in 3 weekends is just beyond what I can do. Love to see it stay where it is, though that's just me, not one of the Elite that they are trying to get.

Because it took him 4 and half hours to eat one of those pies. I'd think he'd flee to Europe to forget the stigma. :)

Nov 24 2006, 08:56 AM
I suspect the Euro Open took the lesser of two evils regarding scheduling the event. I have emailed with Jussi, the Euro TD, and we are on the same page that two of the top events ($20k and 117 pros at the Euro / $26k and 144 pros at the MSDGC)) sharing the same weekend is not good. And this year, we will both be bigger.

Now check out next August, starting with Worlds, there will be a pro payout close to $150,000. Assuming $80k for worlds, approaching $40k for msdgc, and if the Euro can get close to $30k, that should be quite an August!

Will this be the biggest monthly payout ever?

Those folks in Europe are building a great foundation and I am proud to say that the PDGA is an integral part of it. Am I conflicted? Nearly everyday.

We're moving up a week, unless we change our mind. We're not going to change our mind. 2007 MSDGC August 18 & 19. We apologize to BOB, but it'll shake out, and I have to be consistent and just not fret cause if we have too many tournaments and two few weekends that's fantastic. We consistently said the same thing in NEFA and scheduling #$*&$! is just a song we sing while we're picking the best date.

Bob Graham you can take the next weekend, or another weekend. I hope you don't think we're being thoughtless with this; we feel we have to move to improve the schedule for pro tour.

As for the latest Sonderfanian suggestion, maybe there are PDGA people who want us to fail. I don't know. I do think the PDGA somehow conveys that their way is the best way and the only way. I think the PDGA should look around and figure out a way to work with the lunatic fringe. Everyone knows somebody who might fit that description.

We're moving our tournament up a week. We're going to figure out a way for great players to fly out of here. We will provide limo service to the airport. We'll try to make it easier for touring players to come.

Does cashing in GM count as cashing?

I'd say yes. Mike Connell, Davis Johnson and Sharkey can all register from 1/1 to 3/1. As can the ladies (Des, Courtney, Angela and Sarah).

And if these folks don't register from 1/1 to 3/1, they will be able to register from 4/1 until tourney day or until these divisions are full (8 GM spots and 16 Women's spots).

Dec 01 2006, 08:27 PM
Check this out: http://www.msdgc.com/players_payout.html

We rounded a couple numbers at the top so it's not exactly PDGA payout table, but close. Still, considering how much money you'd need to live on your disc golf winnings, fairly pathetic.

It's around $35,000, and we "approach $40,000" with around (depending on Birdie Skins DOUBLES Qualifier sign-ups) $3,500 in total Skins. Then there's a super-secret putting contest for cash -- we may have said $1,000 total -- on the town common in Leicester, with as much publicity as we can muster. We don't actually have permission to use the Common for this purpose, which is why this mini event within an event is still super secret. Don't tell Steve I told you. We have big promotional plans, and the putting contest will surely prove to be an oddity for the few townfolk who happen to wander by. I bet my dad will go. Good thing it's open to players only (though, now that I think of it, why?). Anyway, just watching me putt will mess up your putting.

What else is secret? We're getting a big dumpster at Pyramids, which I may have mentioned already but who knows how far that post got.

Other still secret stuff. Okay this is no longer a secret but let's be clear: Women, up to the 16 spots we're saving for them, can register for the 2007 MSDGC UNTIL THE DAY BEFORE THE TOURNAMENT. Send your "You are geniuses" e-mails to both Steve and me, or just post them here.

There's another secret. Svea said she's coming, said she doesn't care if some of the best women players in the world kick her butt. Said she's looking forward to it.

You know what? That's the spirit.

Oh yeah, wait till you find out what we decided to do for Birdie Skins Doubles.

Format: Skins by total score per team per hole. Is there a clearer way to say that? Your partner shoots a 3 and you shoot a 4 so you card a 7. And yes you play your own disc the whole time.

Top four Birdie Skins Qualifier finishers get to pick their partners from the 5th to 8th finishers, with the top guy picking first and down the line, like gym class. We're going to let players think about it and have them pick their partners right before the actual Birdie Skins the next day, Friday, August 17.

Is this proof that we're evil? And are there any (other) questions?

Only major that serves PDGA members of all skill levels by rating. We messed up this year by not continuing the invite process but payouts were even bigger and courses better.

What was the percentage of people that attended year one, that also attended year two?
What was the percentage of people who attended year one, that didn't attend year two, and why?

Correlate that to MSDGC attendees year per year.

Why is a major in decline?

And BTW Chuck, this is not a personal attack towards you or mid nats. I appreciate much of what you do and say on this bored.

Dec 02 2006, 11:40 AM
The first year you had to qualify and they got mailed invites. We got 120 but several complaints about the process of selection. This year we said why not allow everyone to enter who had a rating under the 975 cap because we had the capacity. And we emailed invites. What we missed was that players who complained wanted to be invited because they saw it was worthwhile. And I think paper versus electronic invites impacts turnout.

In addition, we're hosting divisions where players are not used to traveling or maybe haven't thought about it yet since many below 900 ratings are newer to the sport. I don't think it's registered that there's now a major where they can be competitive at their skill level wherever that is at the moment.

So, that's an educational thing that maybe needs to be in PDGA new member/renewal packets. The Mid-Nats has a larger potential base of players to draw from than any major and in theory should become our largest event. Just because it hasn't has more to do with getting out the message than whether it should be a major or not. The PDGA is for all competitive players and there should be at least one major that serves lower skill level players.

Popularity should be farther down the list in the determination whether an event is a valid "championship" which is a better term than "major" for some of the events we call majors. A "major" is a media term. A Championship is determining the best players in certain categories. If you hosted the Legends World Championship and only 10 came, it would still be deserving of championship status but not necessarily major status. Bowling Green Ams on the other hand perhaps should be considered a "major" in media terms but is certainly not a championship other than being a points bonanza for Ams looking to get Worlds invites the following year.

Thanks Chuck. I still don't really understand why so many of the people who came the first year did not come back though.

ck34
Dec 02 2006, 12:12 PM
There are dozens of out-of-state events that I enjoyed but haven't been back. It's kind of a 'been there, done that' kind of perspective. Many of the folks who didn't come back contacted me even apologizing that they could only afford to do one trip and were going to Tulsa or this or that. It's a hike to Highbridge and there's not a built-in base of players surrounding it with Lake Superior and wilderness Canada for 50% of the radius around it. Mid-Nats will be in St. Louis in 2007 the weekend after Labor Day. That's heartland with thousands of players within a few hundred miles. So we'll see if that helps. Location has certainly helped BG become huge.

Why is this on the MSDGC thread?

cevalkyrie
Dec 02 2006, 01:48 PM
I played the Mid Nats the 1st year. It was an experience I will never forget. I was blown away. We saw a black bear cub the day we pulled in. The pros are going to be blown away by the courses and scenery. This place is disc golf paradise.

I would have gone back this year but my rating was too high. I think the biggest factor is location. Highbridge is in the middle of nowhere. With $3.00 per gallon gas prices this past summer that kept many from diving. Our local player base stayed home this year to play another large local event. I suspect the same happened elsewhere.

It's nice to tone down the import of it all. To me the tournaments that most truly embody that vague term "Major" are the USDGC and Pro Worlds. The rest of the official majors seem to be something else -- valient efforts and a major of some sorts, like AM, and Doubles and Masters, or a lot of money with a Major-like format. Oh yeah, you have to extend beyond two days to even consider yourSELFa major.

What's a major? The MSDGC is a minor. As in "I minored in disc golf at the MSDGC, got my masters at PDGA Worlds, and am currently working on my doctorate at the USDGC."

Schwebie just got his Rock Hill doctorate, but still needs to retake a couple classes at Leicester College-- a two-day institution which many challenged students need four to five days to complete. His curriculum vitae still has a few gaps to fill.

Turns out he failed pie-eating during his undergraduate work, and once Innova found out they moved him from 2nd to 12th and made him give up his Star Max. What an awkward scene, and one they broadcast on Headline News every 45 minutes for like 13 hours.

It's talk like that that will get you banned Mr. Jupilo!

When we realized how angry people were with us we backtracked, used their money for the $750 Ace Pot, and the people who didn't show still got their personalized MSDGC dryfit polo. So if it's any consolation to those people we screwed over, we screwed ourselves over much worse on that one, and not so much because we're mean and greedy (like the PDGA), but because we're stoopid (though not as stoopid as the PDGA).

Dec 07 2006, 09:34 PM
Heck with this. I've had about seven anti-pdga rants today, several seemingly innocuous posts albeit with sinister PDGA tones, and generally tried to be an enormous pain in the buuutooocks (Forest Gump voice). I was missing that particularly vindictive tone I sometimes stoop to -- hype being everything, and anything over a six-pack and you look your own worst enemy in the mirror. Combine that with typing speed that leaves no aside, no matter how ludicrous, out of the equation.

Here's my equation. I'm supposed to be banned right now. This is getting boring. I hear from Theo I'm getting banned for a year and then I hear from Steve I'm getting banned for three months with Theo's discretion and here I am not banned. Imagine my disappointment.

Maybe the rule of law, recently published, is the actual rule of law. Or maybe Theo keeps pushing the switch and rebellious Moderators keep pushing the switch back. Maybe I'm stuck in some strange tripped-switch state, getting through just a little electricity, just enough to give off a leeeeetle light.

Yeah that sounds about right.

There's a new big conspiracy within the PDGA. Uh HUH! Stepford Steve and Stepford Pat won't tell, but they're part of this insidious conspiracy where everyone would know everything. This sentiment clashes with the ruling guard. Wait wait wait, this is soooooooo boring already.

If I wake up banned that'll be so funny.

Dec 08 2006, 08:31 AM
J - I think you mean suspended. We don't ban folks anymore. ;)

The thought has crossed my mind Mitch.

I don't hate you, right now. And it's not the time of year for hate and coal. It's the time of year when we put Kelley's stuffed Rudolf and Santa set in compromising positions, and we laugh and she pretends to be shocked and we pretend to be duly chastised except we're giggling with our hands all curled up around our mouths like guilty four-year-olds.

I still can't figure out what Raggedy Ann is doing with this bunch, and I definitely don't want to even attempt to describe what she's doing with the Misfit Toys.

In case you were wondering how we celebrate Christmas around here. And btw, you don't even want to know how Cornelius and the Abominable Snowman celebrate.

No DVD here either, so much for pre-ordering it.
Guess I'll just have to wait until Tuesday with half of Kackalack. I suppose I can just blame the bliZZard.

yeah, could be the 30 inches or so of snow, or the 45 hours that the Denver Airport was closed or the fact that every route in and out of there was shut down.

Trim was almost completely shut out of the video. Frizzaks faired better.

Courtney Peavey with an incredible last round, coming close to getting the win,
Frizzaks- Conn? You know you learned to play in NC! Great shooting boys!
Pie eating!
Skins!
Barry coming in 2nd and not sticking around for the awards?
Except for the rain- it looks just about perfect!

Schweb DVD Review?

Just saw the Worlds DVD. Excellent coverage of the week. Not just your finals coverage, they did a great job of covering the contenders. I think there could have been more general coverage, not just the top 8, but that's tough. Devote a day or 2 to getting video of more of the field, perhaps.

While Marshall is a much smaller and shorter event, they do a great job of showing a wider range of players, probably helps that they have like 9 video folks per course. MSDGC Rocks!

Really, pretty good coverage on the Worlds DVD. The one thing I was baffled by was when they were "showcasing" players, they'd show em missing putts. While I think that's something that is totally reasonable during round coverage, but when it's an announcer talking about a player, a top player, they should show only quality shots. Showing missed shots during round coverage makes it all the more interesting, but not during player profiles, that's just mean!

Otherwise, it was an excellent DVD. Could have had a few more extras though, and there were a lot of "Hot Shots" that were not so hot, and a few that were sorta "huh? That ain't hot."

Better than the PA Worlds DVD for sure. Except hole 7 of the Masters was completely edited out, and not mentioned. Maybe because it's a PR video, but seriously, that's the stuff that people find compelling. As Detective Murtoff would say "They've been decaffeinated."

Matt,

If you are referring to the incident on hole 16 at Lake Olmstead (finals hole 7) with Brad Hammock, it was not edited out. That incident did not happen in the finals but in a previous round and the circumstances leading up to the incident are on the DVD. It shows Brad almost acing the hole but his drive skips off the top band of the basket, flips up on edge and rolls down the hill and into the lake. It also shows him putting out for a double bogey in disgust. It does not show the infamous rock kicking because that happened once his group had finished putting out and as they were walking to the next hole.

My favorite part is John McCray's round in the rain after he showed up 2 holes late for the semi-finals at Riverview Park. He was on fire and his even par round would have been a 10-under without the penalty strokes, easily putting him in the finals.

All in all, I think the 2006 Worlds DVD is excellent and we are pretty happy with how it turned out.

Sorry for the thread drift. Now back to your regular programming. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Regards,
Brian Graham

Courtney and I got back from visiting her folks in Georgia last night at 2AM, but when we saw that the Marshall St DVD had arrived we had to throw it in the ole DVD player.

It is AWESOME once again!

I can't believe I made the #1 putt, let alone 4 putts in the top 15. It's really cool that you caught all 4 putts I made this year on one video.

And to have the last blooper was classic, especially as great as my last round was ;)

Steve, Jason and all that worked on the DVD, you guys are AWESOME!

I would say I can't wait to see you guys next Aug, but it looks like Mother Nature may get in the way for 2007. Courtney and I are expecting a new baby due in July, so she may not be ready to make that trip this year but I'm already trying to convince her, that SHE CAN DO IT!!!!

THANKS again MARSHALL ST for one helluva event!!!!!

Congrats Kevin and Courtney! You two will make great fun parents.

It was fun caddying for you that skins round, especially when you made those 2 huge putts on holes 3 and 4 to push. Crazy stuff!

I was also psyched to get 2 in the top 15 putts! And of course, a blooper and a heartbreaker shot too.

a little constructive criticism...

I noticed that when Barry missed a putt Steve said something like "the 2 time world champ and 3 time USDGC champ"

This event took place before Barry won his third USDGC. I understand that all the commentary is done in post production, but stuff like that just sounds strange.

However, you guys continually produce the best video on the market and I will constantly purchase one!!
