Yeah that why I still don't have a 1060 round in my rating but a 1059 instead. Why is that?
ck34
Apr 19 2006, 06:53 PM
We always round down. If you have a rating that's 1069.99, it shows up as 1069 not 1070. That's partly so an Am at 914.99 has to actually earn the Advanced 915 level. We've been doing that since we started in 1998.

I learned a long time ago, aim straight at the cat. The cat's a whole lot smarter than you are and will get out of the way. It's those feable attempts to miss that cause you to turn a perfectly good cat into a sail cat.

The player with the highest rating gets the spot in the case of a tie according to the USDGC qualification rules. I don't think it leaves room for the TD to have any say in the matter.

That is how it was to start the year but they changed it.
Gary, here is the word from "the man"
"After reviewing the results of the first three qualifiers, we have decided to amend the tie-break procedure. The tie for the last qualifying position can be decided by a playoff or by awarding the spot to the player with the highest rating. The choice will be at the discretion of each event TD.
The total number of players who qualify at each event will remain at five, and the results of the previous qualifiers will stand.
On behalf of the USDGC, I can say that we wish that we had made this decision at the beginning of the year. I apologize to those who have been impacted."
Take care,
Harold
I say do a playoff because they are putting too much faith in the ratings system. Play it off and choose who really deserves the spot. Hellman got skrewed in Melbourne on this issue and they gave it to JJ instead. JJ would have qualified anyway throughout the year but Jeff's chances aren't as high so they basically stole the invite from him.

I've always found the ratings pretty accurate for my play...this being the case my only chance would be to play lights out, tie for that last spot and then win in a playoff!

Or ypou could play lights out and tie for the last spot but be booted because the other guy has a hu\igher rating. I know that looking at the field and thier ratings that many a few of the players are inflated by 5 or so points and others are rated lower then what they play and I don't think it is fair if an inflated guy gets it just because the other's rating hasn't caught up to him yet.

I love this kind of idea Matt...maybe a rock/paper/scissors contest to determine ties! LoL!!! :D
The bottom line is that the decision about how ties will be broken lies with the TD and we will make that announcement at the players meeting. (I'll push for the R/P/S method of tie-breaking!)
my flight leaves colorado springs at 11:30 and arrives in htown at 2:30. headin staight to the course. A week of training from boulder to co springs has got me in shape for states. watch out int, here i come. By the way, thin air effects the flight of a disc dramatically, my valks fly like firebirds. no wonder everyone here has a bag full of "understable" discs.

Great job, staff. The event is running very smoothly.
One question on the tee times -- do they need to start 10 minutes apart?!? Starting a 27-hole round with long holes past 1pm does not sound like the best idea...that's going to leave people done at 6pm or later.
ching_lizard
Apr 22 2006, 11:32 PM
This event rocks!
Sorry Dawg - but 10 minutes is about the optimum interval...especially on the West course where it takes a card about 10 minutes to finish #8 on Wilmont...even longer sometimes if someone hits the schule or goes long on it. We've tried other intervals and they just aren't long enough...part of the reason for the later tee times is because of the sheer size of the Advanced field.
Sure hope everyone is enjoying themselves.
I had a blast out there today! Sorry to everyone I had to give the "I Got Eatin by the Dragon Monster at Texas States" mini over on the dragon hole :DIt was freakin burnin hot out there but I enjoyed getting to watch every throw while spotting.
After the rounds watching the fastest throw and fastest catch deal was sweet. Robby Bratten is something else. He broke the speed record unofficially with a throw of 133kph (the record is 131) He averaged about 125kph on his many throws! I dont think anyone else ever got over 125 even once. Hopefully tomorrow he can break it officially and maybe someone will even catch it and break the catch record(119kph)
Good Luck to all tomorrow!

Some of the final scores are up already...but many more are continuing to come in. I'll post updates as I finish scoring each division.
Also please note that in many cases, the payout is lots more than what the PDGA upload can handle since we also have the Lone Star Series event bonus amounts to add to the various payouts.
Payout has been posted at the course and players seem to be very pleased by it.
Final added cash in the Pro side I'm estimating to be in excess of $4,000! Can't wait to hear what the Pro fields have to say about it... :D

not complaining, just curious
Less then a third??? 40% according to my calcs, but Im no math genius :D
As far as the women's payout, may be they were being extra nice to the women or maybe it has something to do with the LSS bonus payout. Either way, looks like it should be a very happy ladies feild :)

There are a lot of Kudos going to Nez, Gimp and the HFDS team, and rightly so, but mention should also be made of all our guests! Not just thanks for coming and making this such a great event, but thanks for making disc golf in Houston Texas look great.
Last week was a busy week for HFDS, especially for Louis Hall, Neal Dambra and a host of other members who spent the week cleaning up after a very messy Easter weekend crowd. HFDS has often been complimented by the Parks Dept for keeping a clean and gentle presence at Tom Bass. The many out of town players that showed up helped to build on that reputation. Thank you!
Lastly, one of HFDS' goals this year was to try and make this tournament one of the most women friendly. Hence, extra effort was made to help in that area and to make women feel welcome and wanted. I saw more women out there playing than I've ever seen before. I hope that we made this a good event for you and please let us know what we did right and wrong, and can do in the future to keep you coming back!

Interesting stats (with the preliminary ratings (http://www.pdga.com/tournament/tournament_results.php?TournID=5455&year=2006&incl udeRatings=1#Open)):
-Jamie Callis shot all 3 rounds with a rating of 1000 or higher, and didn't cash.
-Des Reading shot one round rated over 1000. How many other women have done that?
-If I did the math right, you had to play 1010 golf to cash in Open (actually Joe Hague did that, and still didn't cash (sorting by average ratings doesn't exactly match sorting by scores)).

Speaking of Pearland, there were a few more funny stories from this weekend than normal, and Ill share one now. My friend Dustin could not play this weekend because of a job interview during the middle of the day on Saturday. Someone made the comment that the PDGA has taken the dress code too far when they saw Dustin in full suit and tie at Tournament Central.
Anyway, I drove him around in the cart a bit and I kept introducing him as the Mayor of Pearland and several people believed me and said thanks for the jellybeans.

Not found. At the end of the ceremony there was a dash to the revealed location. Emily and Burl drove over there, but then ran down #14 backwards instead of running the other way. I ran. Andi and Don rode with Nez on the golf cart. Nez found it and gave us all a half-dollar for our meager efforts.
It was in approximately the same spot as the original #13's basket, about 100-150 past the current #13 basket and centered in the ditch (which didn't exist at that time).

Well the park people weren't too cool to boot us out. I was 3 people away from signing out my prizes when we were told that we had 15 minutes to leave the park. That wouldn't have been too bad, except for the fact that I had a four and a half hour ride back home to look forward to and it was 9:00 pm! (oh, and I had to be at work for 6 am /msgboard/images/graemlins/ooo.gif)
Great event !! I had a blast and met many cool people. This was my first PDGA tournament and it was awesome. I just wish my driving wouldn't have been so crappy during the third round. I had too many 300+ foot upshots (but I did birdie hole 17 at Powell, 26 East, with a whole lot of luck). Thanks to every person who helped out. Matt - I can't mention often enough how appreciative everyone has been at the fact that your dad did so much to get these courses in the fine condition that they were in! Wow! Thanks! And thanks to you for helping clean it all up again too!
It is really gratifying to read about all of the positive feedback from this event...it was really great to hear it from almost every player I met all weekend too!!!
Every single one of the volunteers (and there were dozens of them) deserves to take credit for the success of this tournament. And for all of the folks that either contributed to sponsorship themselves, or brought in some sponsors...every little bit helped to make a big difference! Nearly $22,000 in total payout to all divisions ($21,933 to be exact) and just over $12,000 to the Pro divisions.
I wish we had finished this up a little sooner in the day though...but we didn't run the MM1 division on the West course this year, and so we had a ton of Ams to run through on the East course. Oh well...we'll do a better job of it next year!
I hope that everyone that attended this year found that it was worth their trip to Tom Bass just for the atmosphere of last weekend's tournament!
I wish we had finished this up a little sooner in the day though...
How would you know what time we finished up Larry...

30 open players compared to 60-120 is a **** week feild, and I would be suprised if the PDGA allowed this to be a NT next year. No reason to get all offended nothing you could have done.
I hope that it is a NT next year, but if there is no pro support for the event then why would these touring pros come back for the smallest NT event that I have ever seen. The ADV division had double the numbers than the MPO field did. :(

The Southwest is full of ADV guys and there is very limited Open numbers in this part of the country...There are not very many PRO's in this area. It's far from the event's fault, because I have been to ALOT of NT's and Houston actually puts on one of the better events out there.
Also Houston is blocked off from most of the country, being in the Gulf coast, unless you fly, its hard to get to plus way expensive due to >$3/gallon gas prices. The H-Town crew that has bee bringing the Texas States to us are as compitent as there is out there. Usually the NT's you see getting near 100 are in great locations that are easily accessible (BG middle of the country, PHX only 4 hours from LA, GLO MI has a TON of players) I'm glad we have at least 1 NT in Tejas a year to give the Texicans a chance to qualify for USDGC.

They were rated when all the scores were under one tournament tab. All you have to do is look at similar rounds from people who played in your pool to get the estimated ratings

The Southwest is full of ADV guys and there is very limited Open numbers in this part of the country...There are not very many PRO's in this area.
I'm also disapointed in the pro turnout, and it'd be nice to figure what to change to draw more players, but I'm not sure I buy Kevin's argument.
As of two weeks ago there were 127 Pro men registered with the PDGA in TX. If half of them show up, plus draw some players from further away it would be a decent field.
I combined the Pro Open and Masters fields, and looked at numbers. We actually got a higher percentage of players from Louisiana then from TX. Of course TX is a huge state, (Atlanta, GA is closer to Houston the El Paso is), but I believe the vast majority of TX players are in Houston, Austin or Dallas/FW areas.
<table border="1"><tr><td>State</td><td> PDGA Registered</td><td> Played Tourney</td><td> percentage
</td></tr><tr><td>TX</td><td> 127</td><td> 32*</td><td> 25%
</td></tr><tr><td>OK</td><td> 34</td><td> 2</td><td> 6%
</td></tr><tr><td>LA</td><td> 12</td><td> 4</td><td> 33%</tr></td></table>
It'd be nice to get a 40%-50% turnout from our own state. I don't think that's really unreasonable.
It's far from the event's fault, because I have been to ALOT of NT's and Houston actually puts on one of the better events out there.
I'm guessing that there's just too many events in the area, and a high entry fee event that's going to attract out of state top players like Barry and Kevin might actually be a detriment to many of the lower rated pros.
*I did not look to see if any of those pros played in GMs, or Advanced... I also just noticed that half the pros in TX have ratings less than 955.
Are there or will there be any more of the cards available? The players pack playing cards!! I was not able to attend  and would like to get my hands on some of these!!

15 1000 plus players at Waco last year 13 at States this year Am I right that Waco petitioned to have a lower NT entry fee last year?
19 out of 56 paid at Waco last year
13 out of 31 paid at States this year
Did the fact that Barry showed up scare people away??? It seems to me the bottom part of those Waco scores may have included more people that were playing for the experience last year

Do you have to petition to charge less for your NT?
Just think if you charged $50 and added all that cash. You would be paying out like 500%. :)
Too bad all tournaments are judged only on the amount paid to 1st place in MPO. It would be nice if we could get a "cultural paradigm shift" in this regard and judge events on some kind of overall quality, which it sounds like Texas States had in spades. Thing is, you can't distill that into a single stat so it's a lot harder to express.
I'm putting Texas States on my list of "big tourneys to travel to some day". It sounds like it was a blast.

Don't forget all those "PDGA Texas Pro's" are of master/GrandMasters and above age's.
I am included in that stat.
I was unable to attend do to family commentments. I would have loved to be there.
I still sent them money for sponsorship though.
Nothing against Houston, but when you compair Waco courses to Houston courses, which tournament would you choose.
I did count in the Masters division, but not GMs. And since I'm new here, I don't know from the names who the old farts are.
Haven't played Waco yet, so I can't compare courses. Many Houston courses are admittedly substandard, but the courses for this tournament are pretty **** good.

The Bass courses are boring!!too long and open!!
You also have to understand those dallas boys are scared to leave the metroplex area. You also had schultz, feldman, and sprague signed up early and none of those Dallas cats are gonna drive to htown to get whooped up on by the top pros for a buck twenty five or whatever the pro entry was. You combine a tough course and top pros and the "pros" we have in Texas will hide out in the barn with a few exceptions. The nt status was great to have because it brought in the pros we had and boosted up the player package we recieved and gave a little incintive for sponsorship that added to pay out. I was checking some of the box scores for other nt events and for the majority of the pros listed, I had never heard of them. They must stay around their home turf and not travel very far to play. Texas is about the size of 4 average states, so its a long way to htown. especially coming from the north or west. From el paso it takes about 10-11 hours down I-10 and from the panhandle it takes about the same. Would it have made you feel better if id have played pro and some of my other buddies so that there were more "pros" playing? A look at some of the box scores for some other tournies shows that a lot of the people who ply pro are not truly pro caliber players. Don't judge an event on the pro turn out, but the ratings of the pros who do turn out. :D
PS Way to go Joe, it made me proud to see a local on the lead card the final 27.

True, but aren't most Texicans in east Texas? D/FW, Austin, San Antonio, Waco, Round Rock, and Corpus are all a reasonable drive. Are you telling me that a large number of the TX pros don't live in those areas?
[/QUOTE]
Would it have made you feel better if id have played pro and some of my other buddies so that there were more "pros" playing?
No. You're an 890 rated Am, you've got no business playing pro, unless you really want to donate just to get a chance to play with Feldberg the first round. As it turned out, you could say the exact same thing about me (except I got to play with Barry). Is that what's happening? All the sub 950 pros were afraid to play so the field was small but very strong? Next year, all the sub-970's will be afraid to play making it even more exclusive, then the year after that, nobody rated under 1000?
Seriously, what would get more local pros to come to the event?
yobyug
Apr 25 2006, 04:42 PM
Glad to see you can/get to speak for all pros.......now I see why you live in H-town.......
I wish I would have been able to see the top cards in pro play, that was a huge reason for me going to the event in the first place. Unfortunately my tee time coincided with the tee times of the top dawgs and I didn't get a chance to see them make a single throw. Not complaining, though. I'll take being in the lead card any time over watching other people play. I just wish I would have been able to check out their techniques.

Ok next year in the Pro divisions I am calling for three rounds then a cut for those who didn't make the cash. Thos who did cash get to play in a final 9 to try to make a move up into higher money.
I sure wish the 3rd-5th cards would've been highlighted as we were shooting better then the 1st and 2nd cards. :o

Read it again, I was asking if that is the reason for the turnout. Notice the question mark? Also you left off the preceding two sentences. Here's what I wrote in context:
"Is that what's happening? All the sub 950 pros were afraid to play so the field was small but very strong? Next year, all the sub-970's will be afraid to play making it even more exclusive, then the year after that, nobody rated under 1000?"
I retract the word "All" from the 2nd sentence. There were 3 sub-950 Pros playing in the open division. Also two in the 950s, and 5 in the 960s; one of them cashed.
Afraid....you got to be kidding!
Ok, maybe "afraid" is the wrong word. Maybe "economically disinclined" would be better.

Actually Feldburg beat them by one as well as Jd and Dagon. Then Avery shot a -2 and Robbie B had a -1. Jim D was -1 going into the dragon but had a hiccup. I had two Obs in the last few holes or I would've been in a little better shape.
The scores on our card after the Wilmont were really tight with Dave and avery at -1 and jim and I at even.
Last but not least dagon Owen and Jd shot -3s from the 5th card with Dagon being -4 after the willy. The course record is a -5 without the horseshoe hole which he took a 6 on so he had a -6 in his grasp. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Nothing against Houston, but when you compair Waco courses to Houston courses, which tournament would you choose.
both. they are very unique experiences. the Beast is a great course. one could easily make the case the Olde Cameron is old-school golf with its bird-fest of 250 (and less) footers. of course you cant throw as far as other masters players (or even advanced masters! :D), so i can understand your preference for Waco. Tom Bass is an awesome course. it might be big, but you still need placement. shanking a drive can hurt severely. Texas States at Tom Bass is as close as you'll come to disc golf as an athletic challenge.

I think the perception that Bass is open and boring is WAY overrated (and whats up with Bass with a lake Round Rock saying this). You really need to play strong golf to do well out there and stay out of trouble. Look at the scoring spreads between the divisions
We set up some yellow rope holes at MacGregor one year and I have played Winthrop with the full course installed, so if toughening up the course is something the PDGA would like to see I think between the entire crew we could make some VERY fun risk reward holes out there.
I hope some of the other staff from this years Texas States will be open to some new thoughts on format for next year when we start planning. Having a full year to plan the 12th annual and having been at my job for well over a year should make it so I can spend some time out there as well this year doing prep :)
I believe we would have had a larger pro field if the entry fee were lower, say $75. What do others think? Im not even sure we would be allowed to lower it and keep NT status

I agree shot placement is still very important. I threw some of my longest shots ever this weekend but they weren't in the best spots. I'd say Bass tests your shot selection and placement pretty well. Baskets within ten or fifteen feet of OB on 500 foot holes. That ain't easy.

Pat, I gotta disagree with the Bass Waco comparison. However, I think the nature of the course has next to nothing to do with low pro turnout and nothing the HFDS crew did had anything to do with the low pro turnout. It was out of their hands, and in my estimation (I unfortunately did not have to wait for money), the HFDS crew did a truly outstanding job.
As for the courses, I think quite a few of the non-permanent tourney holes were excellent. However, many of the permanent holes, though very well designed given the boring land, have absolutely no risk or penalty for an inaccurate drive. I would love to see an effort to toughen some of those holes up. I do realize it is a lot of work, but I don't view many of those permanent holes as championship (or NT) quality.

The problem of the ratings for Advanced Women is now fixed...looks like the "courses played" settings were wiped out for FW1 during one of the numerous attempts to get the displayed payout numbers right.
I think I've finally got all of the players results, in the 3 different tournaments we hosted, with the correct payout showing the LSS bonus amounts included, and all of the ratings settings about right. Let me know if I've goofed it up again!

Man! Gimp's got that right! Nez was super instrumental and burned up two of his color printers getting all of the signage, programs, maps, scorecards, etc. all done before the event. I was sick to my stomach when we at first believed that someone had stolen his laptop - what an ultimate tragedy that might've turned out to be!
I had the scoring sheets on my unit, but most everything else for the tournament and Dave's own business was on his! Glad to hear that it was just temporarily packed away during the mad hustle out of the park Sunday night.
