5. J.D. Ramirez (Coming off of a nice win in Nac)
6. Clayton (These courses need big arms)
7. Moody (Usually plays Waco, but since States took it's place as an NT....)
8. Mike Grider (New Uncles don't get a pass)
9. Alex Downs (Matt H. says he'll play Friday dubs)

A couple of notes on the speed golf event I'm running on Friday.
Each T marker will have a clipboard attached to it where each competitor will mark their score for the hole. It should be very straight forward. Also, there are no provisional throws as I've laid out the rules. Any throw counts! Since there are no OB areas for this round and no mandos, there should be no need for a provisional anyway. The lost disc possibility is part of the competition and a way that you can gain an advantage if you use it well.
Also, since there is no drop in required on close shots, remember, if you swipe at the chains and fall in, that's a falling putt. If you swipe and miss, that is the same as a missed putt. Make sure you can hit the chains on that swipe!
Also, know the rules! This is to your advantage. For example, on a missed putt, is it better to go to the missed putt and reputt or to declare it a lost disc and reputt from the same postion?

Cuz it's three different events. An NT which by definition is Pro-only, an Advanced A-tier, and an Int/Rec B tier.
Not sure why they seperated the Ams into two seperate tournies, and I'm not sure why all three event pages show all divisions.

Plenty of room for everyone who wants to play MPO, if they act now. (And again, all players have the same issues of time/money committments)
43 or 31 open slots and 10 days to sign up....tick, tick, tick.

If we start juggling around pool assignments and taking people from the wait-list, then we'll want to give them at least a week to make travel and stay arrangements...I'm guessing that we will want to make our decision by the end of this weekend so that folks will have enough time to make arrangements.
The time/deadline for MPO sign-up is nearing...
The new HFDS bag tag debuts at Texas States! These are sweet brass bottle opener tags, stamped with the HFDS logo on the front, and the tag number on the back.
The tags are $10, and can be had at Texas States, or from Dave Nesbitt or Rick Bannister after States is over. We have printed 250 tags, and of course, all monies raised will go back into the club to be used where all the other HFDS funds go . . . back into Disc Golf!
FYI, Tag Nos. 1-5 are being held by non-playing Texas State staff, and will NOT be in play during Texas States. But if you can find who is holding them after States is over and catch them for a casual round, they will surely be in play after Texas States is done!

Apr 11 2006, 11:01 PM
Because it is a pro event and Ams should feel lucky that they get to play in the field of a NT event.
Do you think that any of these touring pros will come back to Texas for if there is only 20 open players compared to 60-90 in all the other NT events that they play in.

Apr 11 2006, 11:16 PM
I would be interested to know what Waco's registration has been with 10 days out the last two years, considering this tournament is essentially replacing Waco as Texas's NT stop. And so you don't have to go and look it up, Waco drew 55 open players in both 2005 and 2004. I had hoped we'd see a similar field (or even larger). Given, the aesthetics aren't as appealing and the location is not as centrally located... but the bigger cash pot should have balanced out those factors. My guess is there will be no less than 40 registered MPO players when all is said and done.
But it's not just an NT for pros where Ams should just feel lucky to play. It is an A-tier for Advanced and a B-tier for below Adv. as well as the State Championships for all.
Who's fault is it that a "professional" doesn't sign up?
BTW, I cant imagine any Pros being turned away unless they(the pros) get on the ball and fill the A-pool. But if they don't sign up less then a week in advance then the blame should go on the shoulders of them not the people busting their hump for the entire Dg community. These guys are putting their heart and soul into this thing, they are not going to intentionally screw anyone out of anything.

Keep it coming Matt. As of right now, the Pro's can only blame themselves. The TD staff laid out the guidelines early, Gimp has been on the ball about keeping things updated, and everyone is aware of the situation. Instead of complaining about the situation, complain to your fellow players who are slacking with their registrations.

Do you think that any of these touring pros will come back to Texas for if there is only 20 open players compared to 60-90 in all the other NT events that they play in.
If an event has decent added cash, they will be back. Large turnout actually hurts the payout for top touring pros. It's local pros who benefit with large fields so there are more lower level payout positions. Look at the PDGA payout calculator: www.pdga.com/documents/td/PayoutCalculator2006.xls (http://www.pdga.com/documents/td/PayoutCalculator2006.xls) and compare payouts for fields of 30 versus 60 pros with $5000 added (or what you think might be added). First place drops several hundred dollars with 60 versus 30. This has always been true and has nothing to do with revised PDGA payout tables. If I'm a touring pro, my best economic return will likely be events with lots of added cash promised and potentially low Open turnout.
Low turnouts only hurt local pros not the touring guys. Large turnout definitely helps the local scene more than the travelers even though you might think otherwise. So local guys, sign up and help yourself and your local buddies. Try to keep more of that Texas money at home.
So what you are saying is that "hypothetically" two 988 rated local Pros would benifit more from a larger feild of pros so they would want sign-ups to be taken until the two-minute warning for their division regardless if it were to mean that Ams on a waitlist wouldnt get in and possibly not fill the event???

Good thing your hypothetical scenario doesn't exist. Please note that I've made no posts about pool assignments, in fact, every post I've made has been an attempt to call out pro's (see pages 15 and 26 of this thread)... The last post about Waco was simply out of curiosity, as I'm dumbfounded by the lack of MPO excitement concerning this event.
I never said anything about a 987 rated Pro :) I did say "local" though which isn't entirely truthful technically in my "hypothetical" scenerio :D

Where are all these MPO's you are referring too?
If you get half of the MPO's in Texas and OK that adds up to like 17 players right?
There just isn't that many MPO players in this area of the country. You may want to revise your question to ask why is there 15,674,929 AMS in our area and 29 MPOs

We have a nice pro turnout!
- Barry is coming back after a hiatus! Welcome back
- Dave Feldberg is coming back to get his 1st Texas States, and was a regular for many, many years.
- Kev McCoy is bringing the Okies back again and again, and he wants that NT win in Houston!
- Avery Jenkins is going to give them both a run for their money, as these courses are built for both distance and accuracy. (Can't wait to see him throw in the Let It Fly distance CTP fling)
- 2 time Masters World Champ Brad Hammock is coming to renew the rivalry with Joel. It will be his first Texas States, and first return since Worlds. If it is dry, he will love the rollers here!
- we have the largest FPO division we have ever had at States, including a first time for Carrie "Burl" Berlogar and Sheila Kirkham! and the most women overall! We are looking to treat them right, with FPO entry fee discounts, portajohns in the remote areas, special additions to the players pack for women, etc. This should be a great division to watch with Des and Courtney in town as well !
- we have the largest Grandmaster field we have ever had as well. This is becoming a real competitive Texas division with some of our long time masters turning 50
- And remember; we limit the field because we do NOT like 5 somes, we do NOT like ghost cards. We have 3 courses all in the SAME park, so the atmosphere is outstanding.
It is looking like a great weekend of fun in Houston, for Pros and Amateurs alike! Don't forget some DDC and Guts action on the sidelines Friday and Saturday. It looks like we have secured a great beer sponsor for the weekend, so suds will be flowing after rounds Saturday and Sunday; the player package for both Pros & Ams will be talked about long after the event; the trophies are another unique and memorable piece of hardware for those lucky few; and a flymart that is shaping up with some out-of-towners bringing their unique merch!
You gotta want a piece of this!

No, but we will have a roped off beer garden area for players and staff only where it will be allowed, by consent of the Parks Dept, and under the watchful eye of our local finest officers!
My best chance to win is if the top 3 cards accidently gets confused durring the round and starts playing the Powell course when we are supposed to be playing Wilmont :D

I know one person I'm tired of hearing from about low turnout in the MPO and that is YOU Matt Hall!
When Texas Pros were complaining of small Open fields YOU were hiding in the ADV. division, so shut up and put in some time in the Open before you start bashing anybody about the size of the field!
That's why I played like 6 events in MPO before I moved up right? Guess what? I got my entry in early because I knew I would have to but the fact is that there are quite a few guys out there who never get on the boards and DO NOT know that there is going to be a cut-off date for registration. In the past all players have been able to sign up on friday and many people (all divisions) still think that they can.
BTW I actually should like the smaller field because of the USDGC odds but then again this is a NT and these MPO fellers need to SIGN UP.

no sign up on Friday?
if all players had access to the board/compuTTer and all this information.....OK
But not everyone gets it
Of course there will be Friday signups if the tourney isnt full by then. Just like every other tourney out there, if you wait too long it might be full by then. The only difference here is that there is a chunk of spots being reserved for a while. Should they be able to have those spots on the Friday before an event if other divisions are willing and responsible enough to sign up early and get them?
Talk to your Pro buddies and get them to sign up. I know I have been on the phone telling the locals to snag up the last few spots in the B-pool.

The way I have been playing Bass lately I don't have a chance but if i can learn to shoot like -4 on the Willy again then I will have like a 5%. The ratingds should be REALLY inflated though after this ratings update and if the rating come out like the recent NTs. Heck I could shoot really bad and still hit 1000 :D
People have had many chances to check out the Texas States information at LSS events (at least the last few) or have friends tell them that it was likely to fill. I know the fliers made it out to several other Texas events as well.

And it has been stressed that it could fill from the get-go. It seems the Pro's need to get a phone tree going or something...

Groin strain around X-mas....explains my participation this year... Someimes it doesn't hurt, but one toe stub/heal stomp and the healing process has to start all over again. Doc gave me some steroids, but that only made my groin area massive :D :p ;)

I'd consider going if I could get there. Sounds like a good time. And yes, I'd play pro. Gas prices and stupid Charlotte airfare prices are killing me.
Sorry Jim but I cant edit the poll,i thought i could, but i dont have those privelidges on the site.

Careful John.
I hurt my groin in October. It's been over 6 months now and I still haven't recovered. It seems anytime I aggravate it (like being on my feet for more than an hour) I regress about 5 weeks.
Trying to come back too soon (I played an event in Nov.) can seriously lengthen the healing period. Six months without golf sux.
When you do return to activity, I highly reccomend compression shorts and thigh wraps under your regular shorts. They retain heat in your muscles as well as add support. My endurance is doubled when I wear them.

You should try the newer, non-toe stub/heal stomp technique that the other pros are using. ;)
Also, you might want to stop turning around after your crushing drives, grabbing your crotch with both hands, and screaming out "take that beatches."
Just kidding John, groin pulls are difficult to heal. Hope to see you playing soon.

Without having to re-read through the entire thread --- is there going to be a Pro/AM doubles skins match on Sunday as there has been in previous years (this has happend in the past right? I didn't just imagine Olse and Yount taking almost all of the skins one year, did I?)?
That was not States, that was GCCS Finale.

People that play in sandals in H-Town, must be expecting rain that day or love fire ants.

$100 less on a $525 flight is not what I consider cheap. Might as well fly to Hawai'i.

If you could find a friend to come I have a free AA companion ticket that will probably go unused, although I doubt they'd let anyone but me use it since my name and frequent flyer # are on it.
To use it, a flight has to be to/from the 48 states, and must be for $299 or more. From DFW, there aren't many flights that are more than $299 that I'd want to take...the ones to Vegas or NY or Florida are all at around $275, so I'm SOL.

Bling - you might try registering and asking about extra space on the HFDS Message Board (http://www.hfds.org/html/hfds_message_board.html). The locals are more likely to hang out there often times... [Gotta use a real email address and follow its link to reg though...] But that is where you are more likely to find some extra help iin finding a place to stay.

".....since this is a NT event/A-tier, will all golfers be required to wear a collared shirt?"

From the NT Player Handbook...
8.3 Dress Code
8.3.1 All players in PDGA sanctioned competitions are expected to dress appropriately and maintain a clean and well-groomed appearance at all Event sites and all associated functions.
8.3.2 The following dress code for all competitors will be enforced at all PDGA National Tour and Major Events. The PDGA also recommends that this dress code be enforced at SuperTour and lower tier events, but this decision lies solely with the Tournament Director:
All players must wear a shirt covering their upper chest area. A well-tailored shirt with a fold-down, mock turtle, v-neck, crew neck, Henley, or zippered collar, and with sleeves covering the part of the arm from the shoulder to the elbow (commonly known as the upper arm), shall be considered acceptable. Women are also allowed to wear sleeveless shirts as designated above.
No tee shirts will be allowed, except for competitors in the Junior and Amateur divisions during preliminary rounds only. Juniors and Amateurs shall not wear tee shirts during semifinal or final rounds. Crew neck or V-neck shirts made of high-performance or high-tech materials, such as Dry-Fit, Cool-Max, and others will be allowed.
Shirts that hang down lower than the bottom hemline on the player's shorts shall be tucked in.
No ripped shirts, shorts, pants will be allowed on the course. This includes unhemmed, torn or cut "vents" at the shirt collar.
No offensive, profane, or obscene slogans or logos shall be allowed on any clothing. Junior players may not wear slogans or logos referring to alcohol or tobacco.
Shoes or other foot coverings must be worn. Players will not be allowed to play in bare feet. Sandals or slides are allowed.
8.3.3 This dress code will be in effect from start to finish at each event, including all tournament rounds. Players who do not make the final cut, but wish to remain on site through the duration of the tournament, will be considered spectators and will not be required to conform to the Tour's dress code.
8.3.4 Any player in breach of the dress code will be warned for the first offense by a Tournament Official or PDGA Marshal, may be required to change attire immediately at the official's discretion, and will under all circumstances be required to change attire prior to the restart of their next round. For any additional offenses, players will be subject to disqualification by the Tournament Director, and may also be subject to suspension from PDGA events at the discretion of the PDGA Commissioner.
Which leaves me 1 question...since there are no semifinals or finals, can Am's wear T-shirts (within the guidelines) during the whole event?
".....since this is a NT event/A-tier, will all golfers be required to wear a collared shirt?"
Are "all golfers" playing in an NT?
the_kid

Nope only an NT for pros.

I remember reading (here I think) that the Player Handbook applies to all golfers at an NT event, regardless of the actual event tier they are participating in.
Where are all these MPO's you are referring too?
If you get half of the MPO's in Texas and OK that adds up to like 17 players right?

Isn't this an alphabet soup? :D
I remember reading (here I think) that the Player Handbook applies to all golfers at an NT event, regardless of the actual event tier they are participating in.
Well, if you read it on the internet, it must be true. :)

The staff has already requested clarification on this policy for our event from the PDGA headquarters. We'll post "word" here as soon as we have it.
It seems a shame that we might not be able to let anyone wear their fancy new Texas States tee shirts at the event though... :( But hey, disc golfers look good in any kind of wear, don't they? :D

Apr 13 2006, 10:38 PM
The PDGA quoted the NT handbook to us...we are asking for clarification about whether the dress code applies to the Am players, but so far, the answer seems to be "Yes" the dress code for a National Tour event is in effect...
I think the safe way to play it at this point is to plan on having to wear a collared shirt. "Neat and presentable appearance" seems to be the point being stressed there...
(For my part, I always wear a collared shirt when participating in any sanctioned event...especially one in which we are likely to have spectators and/or press.) It only helps to improve our public image and tournament organizers need all the help they can get in promoting the sport and in obtaining future sponsorships.
We have confirmed with the PDGA competition director that the dress code will only be in effect for the NT portion of the event, i.e. all professional players. The remainder of the players (adv, int & rec) are recommended, but not required, to follow the dress code as found the the NT Players Handbook
scoop
Apr 14 2006, 10:14 AM
Having not received an NT Players Handbook, nor ever having read said handbook, I can only venture a guess as to the NT standards of dress.
I think I'll adhere to the Required, rather than the Recommended, dress code for the A-tier event that I'm playing in.
Thanks for the clarification!

There were many more casuals out there warming up on both the Powell and the Willy! Good to see Mr. McCain with a small delegation checking it out...hope we can get your buddy in!
Courses were in good shape - the Wilmont was about 2/3 mowed and looking pretty good. Crews will be out on Thursday to wax the hill on Wilmont #8.

Now I know why Gus Calvo pre-registered for Intermediate so early --- so he could take advantage of the Pre-registered/2-week exemption rule.
Gus --- do the right thing: take your 923-rated self and move yourself up to Adv., where you belong.
Same goes for David Stallman (915 rated now) and Lance Steck (who needs to move his bagging-butt out of Rec and up to Int. with his 892 rating).
Seriously guys. Just because the unintended rule allows you to bag in a lower division, the sportsman-like thing to do is MOVE UP on your own.
I'm not saying any of you are less of a man if you don't...ah, heck, who am I kidding...that's EXACTLY what I'm saying.
Yeah!!!.. Move up and let the REAL intermediate players on the waitlist have their rightful spot that you are currently stealing from them :D

Time out there Rooster! Let's keep in mind that for TSDGC we have fixed pools, and flipping folks from pool to pool would be flipping nuts!

Sue and Scott --- is the B pool full now, too? Is there not room for Gus and David Stallman to move up into the B-pool? Last I'd heard, only the C-pool was full.
Sue --- actually, I never worry about my own game. I play because it's fun and I enjoy the competition. Worry? That's what work is for. ;)
I dunno Rooster...I would imagine that the B-pool is full by now but that is just a guess, I knwo as much as you do about that right now.
I see no reason why the Rec Bagger shouldnt be forced up to INT in though since he is in the same pool :D

Obviously, these TDs aren't worried about it so it's a done deal. Players should be allowed to play in the same division for a whole year in my view no matter how good they get unless they wish to move up. Lebron was obviously college or pro level material during his HS years but he didn't have to move up. Tiger was pro material while making his run at several US Am titles. And here we're only talking about a 2-week delay, not a whole season.

Yes, somewhere between 1:00 and 2:00? Actually, my practice rounds don't translate into tournament play. In practice I'm about a 940 rated player, in tournament play (the only play that counts) I'm about an 866 rated player and that's pretty acurate. Obviously I play tournaments for fun... :D

Anybody else planning on coming over for poker or relaxation?
We are going to host a little poker on the Friday night before States. Folks that are coming in from out of town can check into their hotel and then scoot over here and do a little "power relaxing" before heading into competition the next morning.
We have 14 people so far...
The "plan" is to run one tournament - $10 buy-in, and probably have a cash game on the side until closing time. (We'd like to be shut down before midnight so everyone can get plenty of sleep before the tournament.:grin
We're asking everyone to arrive before 8:30 if you want to play in the poker tournament side...not before 7:30 though...I might still be at Tom Bass!
It should be a good way to unwind after your travel into town (or even if you're already in town! ) Come on over, relax and if you're up for it, play a little poker.
PM me if you want to come and hang out and I'll get you directions and a phone number! It's easy to get to and near the Northwest corner of Loop 610.

what would that 9 down have been rated? If you could do it again this weekend I think it would take care of that horrible 937 round! :o
DV is a typo - the Inncolor discs are not even to the house yet, so they are ALL still available - sorry I missed your note. We have 50 minis (er I mean 49 minis) and 50 discs available.
The Discraft full colors are almost "collectables" now though.
hey don't you mean 48 minis

Is the A-Pool closed now? One of my to-be-roommates was going to sign up in Open I believe. Just want to see if that is still possible.
Also, if anyone is looking to split a room, I believe I'll be staying at the Best Western at 288 and 635 for $60/night.
ha ha ha ha. now thats funny!
waiting list anyone.
A pool still has spots and you can sign up on Titledisc!!!!

No clue but Jim might be doing ratings for the Minis so it could be out soon. That 937 along with a bunch more <960s will drop out in the summer update. :D

SSA last year (using the '05 GCCS Final) on the Powell was ~51-52. That makes 45 ~1060-1070??

How windy was it for y'all? I know it was pretty windy after y'all finished. Anyways, Powell is a difficult course to get great ratings on when the ratings pool includes some lower rated players. It is a difficult course for a higher rated player to thrash a lower rated player (necessary for a high rating) because there is virtually no trouble for lower rated players to find.
That being said, if the ratings pool included only higher-rated players and it was really windy, I suspect his -9 would be higher than 1070. At any rate, that is a smoking round, and if the kid shoots like that this weekend, the top guys better watch it.
What was the second best round, and who shot it?

It was that steady SW wind that blew all day. A very odd wind IMO (usually expecting a S to SE wind).
Matt at 45
Neal and Jim D at 53
Boo at 55
Tony at 58
Don't remember the other 7 scores.
Just giving an estimate based on prior ratings of that course (the Regular Powell), since we can't use States results (from the States Powell) to judge it...
Full color innova discs are in and look SWEET... :D

1070ish sounds about right to me... maybe 1080ish given the wind.

Gimp,
I'm definitely going to pick up one as well. Any chance you'll be out at the course on Thursday?
1070ish sounds about right to me... maybe 1080ish given the wind.
The club ratings use a fixed WCP for each course since there aren't always enough propogators to dynamically generate SSA for each round. According to the numbers I have, Powell has a 52 WCP (but so does Wilmont WTF???), so that makes Matt's 45 a 1070 round. The club also doesn't use compression, or the boost, or anything like the PDGA ratings, just 10 points per stroke off of WCP.

Unfortunately, my doctor has suspended my golf for an undetermined amount of time. I hope it's not too long.
Just before Xmas i played in a glow mini. I tripped over a little stump, and fell, hurting my lower right back and my upper/inner thigh muscle. I've always healed quickly....well, not this time. It's been 4 months since the spill, and i'm still hurting. I finally swallowed my pride and went to the Dr. just a few days ago. He wants me to stop all physical activity until some test results come in. Just had X-rays taken on the back, and have an MRI / Cat Scan scheduled for the upcoming week.
It's going to KILL me to have to sit this NT event in Houston out, but if i don't, it will just prolong the healing process that needs to take place.......

John - I'm sorry to hear about your injury. Your presence this year will be missed...especially if the weather deteriorates! :D
Seriously John, I hope that test results come back negative and that you have a speedy (and compelete) recovery.

I'll second Ching's sentiments. Sorry to hear it bro, I hope the tests come back with good news (i.e., nothing major). If you get a wild hair, come down and hang out anyway...

I won't be playing this event as I have to be somewhere else on Sunday but I plan on being there on Friday and Saturday to film some footage for www.discgolftv.com (http://www.discgolftv.com)
I will also have a fly mart table on Saturday with a few custom discs and lots of the new Swedish Latitude 64 discs. I have been throwing them for a week and they are great. Come see me and get your Swedish fix.
See everyone Friday.
Chris
I hope Scott will be able to come buy and get some to have at the course on Friday. There are 50, so please make a nice orderly line, there should be enough for everyone lmao :D

Yes! Please come to Houston and support local disc golf, especially, those who've supported this years TS NT; for example, John Edwards who has used his series to help drive this event and is acting as TD, and FlynHighDiscGolf our title sponsor!
