Here's an ironic twist regarding this non-sanctioned event: It's the only one I know of where PDGA ratings can directly affect your payout since they are used to determine who plays in the Ace and Birdie Skins. Of course, you still have to earn a skin.

Just a general question for the MSDGC powers that be...

How will the tournament schedule work this year? Specifically, how will you be handling the division of the open field between two flights (with 120 expected, splitting it is a given)? Will the flights switch courses mid-day each day with a shuffle on Saturday night? Or will it be like in past years with one flight at Pyramids and one at Maple Hill all day Saturday and they switch courses for Sunday?

I couldn't find anything about this on the website, so I thought I'd ask here.

In brief, semi-random pool splitting first day, with semi-random groupings first round. Everyone plays MHS and PyrL on Saturday. Second round grouped by score and division. PDGA rules. (the semi is how we havent yet figured out how exactly to split up grandmasters and women)

Pool A

R1 MH Short
R2 Pyr Long

Pool B

R2 Pyr L
R1 MH S

Saturday night shuffle, with top half going to pool A

Pool A

Pyr S
MH L

Pool B

MH L

Lunch orders will be ordered and received at different courses for all players, all the time. If you can remember that you'll be okay.

I have a couple concerns. The shuttle between courses for all players on both days is one, but with the courses a third of a mile apart, I know we can overcome.

My other concern is the pie-eating contest. We need a pie-eating contest organizer. We can provide tables, tents and PA systems. We just need someone to run it. We, in our quest for inclusiveness, have decided to include all willing players AND staff in the pie eating contest. We would like a volunteer to step up, preferably a very large, gregarious volunteer, filled with delusions of pie-eating grandeur.

The question is how many pies in how many seconds, and what are the groundrules? Perhaps not 50 pies like in Cool Hand Luke. And of course no puking and, and you have to swallow every bit of the last pie for the contest to be over. Is this not self-evident?

One pie? Three pies? It dont matter. Bite and swallow baby, bite and swallow. It's like being Red Auerbach, and saying players and staff. Ha ha. Who's going down? Ha ha. Yeah baby, you know who I'm talking to. Yeah baby.

xterramatt
Dec 14 2005, 12:43 AM
I think I was either an instigator or originator of the pie eating contest (from here on to be refered to as the PEC). I would be glad to step up to pie eating volunteer organizer. I was practicing today, ate 6 saltines in 1:03... try it. It's hard.

I'm thinking 2 pies. We'll have a randomized stack of pies for all contestants. You MUST eat the top two on the stack, no favorites. If that means eclair and pineapple, so be it. This isn't about taste, it's about eating prowess. You don't think Kobayashi complains that those aren't Ballparks, do you? WELL, DO YOU????

This will be fun. I'll start practicing... oh, wait, I don't get Table talks down here!!! Oh the humanity!!!!

Dec 14 2005, 08:19 AM

Dec 14 2005, 08:28 AM
And Matt, I am going to give you the "Most Often Last Guy Cut From A Clip" Award regarding the creation of the 2005 MSDGC.

In the Heart Breakers section, your missed putt on Pyramids Silver 14 wasn't quite dramatic enough.

Your potential Bloopers weren't easy enough to see.

You Birdie putt on Pyramids Gold 4 would have got you into the round coverage, but alas, fell just short.

And you walked right in front of the camera as Jason finished up his player's speech, and that was the very last thing I cut.

So close, so often. You earned an award of some kind.

(and as a side note, the website is still being tweaked. it is 90% there for 2006, and we are shooting for a pretty darn near complete date of December 31. Just in time for registration, which will begin January 1st at 12:01 AM)

I think that the pie eating contest should quickly separate the men & women from the little boys and girls.

Round 1: 4 groups, 8 in each group. Top 2 advance from each group.
First two eaters to completely eat 3 pies. Random pie selection.

Round 2: 2 groups, 4 in each group. One eater advances from each group.
First one to eat 2 pies. Random pie selection.

Championship round: Head to head. First one to eat 2 pies. Opponent chooses your pies.

$10 buy in. Limited to 32. $250 to the winner, $70 for second. All competitors must remain in the Pie Pavilion the entire time. Tossing your pies at any time during the event would result in disqualification, public humiliation and a guarantee that you will feel better in an hour than anybody else.

If I am there, I will help run the show.

(I'd like to thank Rhett for helping me get back on this discussion page.)

Anyway, changing the format was pretty hard. During discussions, we had to hold our heads in our hands with very crunched faces. Then someone would break the silence with, "Wait!" and reveal how our latest plan was really really dum.

Going to all Pro means doing two pools, having a Saturday night shuffle, and having all players switch courses at lunch both days.

Anyway, Steve and I just finished updating the www.msdgc.com (http://www.msdgc.com) site, and we like enlightening and/or silly feedback. Sometimes we even listen. Sometimes we even listen to MITCH! For example, Mitch suggested last year's shirts, saying the 2004 shirts were too hot and heavy. And he was right...go figure.

We're still divided about the number of pies you have to eat in the pie-eating contest, and Lick threw a monkey wrench into that event by suggesting we may need to have semis and finals. Burp.

Speaking of pie-eating, I apologize in advance for humiating anyone named Schweberger (heal that hand, man!). But sheer size cannot compete with someone who simply does not chew. Chewing is a big waste of time. In a very general sense, I am already in training.

Hey, how about this for the MSDGC Paiiihhhh Contest:

Participants eat two Tabletalk pies, choosing their flavors. They start at the same time and each participant is timed individually. They're finished eating when they've swallowed the last of the second pie, opening their mouths to demonstrate to the timer they're done. They will not be considered finished until there are only wet crumbs left in their mouths.

No pieces of pie beyond crumbs can remain. Crumbs can't be big. In any event, the object will be to eat two pies as quickly as possible, and the spirit of fairness -- so superior to referees -- will prevail in determining the winner.

The top two times advance to the finals, which is also two pies as fast as you can, except your opponent chooses your flavors. The Finals will commence immediately after the first contest, allowing for the much-awaited gagging and puking, but to a small extent and only for those two who really want it.

You know I'm coming back up to defend my title as the worst disc golfer to out-cash all but 11 pro-open players. Poker biatch!!!

On the serious side though... Jason: with countless AM1 and AM2 players expected to register (myself included), how do you plan to handle a senario where a 800-900 rated player is grouped with a player potentially 1000+ rated? Although I could see how it could be a great learning experience for the lower rated player, it could negatively influence a touring pro. Unless of course you split it up just like a NEFA event with pros, ams playing pro, women, etc. all mixed up and jumbled on the first day.

bschweberger
Dec 16 2005, 04:06 PM
Bout time something is on time.

Dec 16 2005, 04:58 PM
Hi Craig, yes, we're planning not to group the first round by skill level or division. Just the first round. This will give everyone a chance to play with new people, and yes, the learning experience will be tremendous for those AMs (playing pro) who are lucky enough to golf with some of the world's best. Of course there are legitimate objections to this, as there are when we do the same at the NEFA events we run. But in our opinion it makes the whole weekend more fun for everyone, and it's the right thing to do.

Grouping by division four out of four rounds because some people feel they might be put at a disadvantage by playing with lower-rated players the first round -- I dunno -- doesn't sound right. We like hearing other opinions, though.

Jason - I think that that was what I had in mind when I asked the question. So how will you "randomly" select who plays with whom? Perhaps a "Skylands Classic" option, whereby by paying a bit of a premium - say $25 to be donated to either skins, tourney pay-out, or the course - you could request to be placed in a group with specific people.

Dec 16 2005, 05:26 PM

Here's an idea we've tossed around pertaining to Worlds pairings. Have people bid to play with anyone including your buddy in the first round (of course at Worlds it would have to be someone in your division). Highest bidder would get the pairing. The person who was bid on would get half the bid and the purse would get the other half. That way, pros who were popular and fun to play with would get rewarded with higher bids.

I've been waiting for this!

I've had the privilage of seeing some of the best rounds at the MSDGC.

2004 4th round Cam shoots the lights out.
2005 3/4 of the rounds saw a course record (I think). In any case, I knew I'd shot a pretty good round only to have it beaten by five stokes by someone else on the card.

Let the bidding begin! :D

Dec 16 2005, 05:58 PM
If the tourney is full on July 1, we could do it then, when all the names are in. Trying to figure out how bidding would work, and through which medium. C'mon brain.

ck34
Dec 16 2005, 06:12 PM
I think you add another column to your online registration list that shows just the name of the current highest bidder, not the $$ value of the bid. This way, no one will be embarrassed with low bids. Each week at a certain time, the high bidder names are all updated if someone new has bid higher. No tie bids because first person to bid a value (via email?) gets it.

At the final deadline, perhaps the $$ value of the bids on the three players who received the highest bids could be revealed but all of the remaining bids on players are kept secret to not embarrass anyone. The total amount added to the purse(s) would also be announced.

We got some ethical reservations about selling the 1st round foursome spots. Some rewards should be free, I guess. I dunno. Haven't talked to Lick about it yet, but the general consensus is a general feeling of unease about becoming TOO commercial, and therein wrecking the mood.

Tough to turn down the money, though. And as a concept it's brilliant, with percieved value that people would bid fairly extravagantly for. Let us weep for the victory of morals over money. Perhaps a contradictory and semi-ethical workaround: give 1st round foursome spots of preference to sponsors. Good thing we have till July 1 to sort it all out. Steve says I talk to much. Still, if we put up 20 male and female superstars and let the bidding commence things could get out of hand, and we'd wind up with a big sack full of money for a new truck, I mean the tournament.

Ha ha very provocative.

I don't see the ethical ship sailing Chuck. We said we'd promote the PDGA and we're doing it. The PDGA infrastructure should exist to help grow the sport. That happened with us, and we greatly benefitted from the years of hard work by the PDGA. Our hope is to benefit the sport, thereby benefitting the PDGA in helping it reach its goals. We imagine a much much bigger sport. But like politics, disc golf is local, especially when you hate to travel.

What ethical ship sailing? Are you suggesting that non-sanctioned tournaments aren't welcome to use the PDGA as a resource? That we are obliged to sanction our event? Why?

Then again, if there is a slight in the air, however ancient and now more imaginary -- more gravy than grave, arrrrrrr -- we will attempt to make up for it, in some other way besides sanctioning our tournament.

I don't agree with players paying to play with other players and that money going to the purse. I'm pretty sick of tournaments getting all of their total purse money from the players themselves. To me it's just the TD's being lazy and not going out and getting sponsorship on their own. Yes the MSDGC is different in that you guys already work your butts off to secure a ton of sponsorship, more than pretty much any tournament out there. I'd hate to see you guys cave into this just to fatten the purse a few hundred dollars. I hate seeing players basically create the entire purse for every event out there. If they don't get sponsorship dollars, they sell 'candy funraiser discs' in yet another lazy effort to make their total purses look larger while keeping with the lazy. Hooray to the MSDGC for getting a whole page or two worth of sponsors, at least half of which aren't from the players participating IN the event! (in terms of added cash that is)

Dec 19 2005, 07:37 PM
Mitch we told you to stay away from those Angry pills.

Mitch a few HUNDRED dollars. A few hundred dollars wouldn't be worth it. Don't you think more like a few thousand dollars? I like it and, like you, I don't like it. I like the PT Barnumesque fantasies of hyping it. And, btw, YOU have to play alone, and camp alone, tied down with water dripping on your head. We'll make you wear your heavy 2004 shirt in the hot sun, and at party time, you won't get any PBR until the Sammy is gone. Yeauuhhhh.

Dec 19 2005, 07:45 PM
Jason, you just opened up the opportunity for some funnin'.

In keeping with your other post on the other thread regarding sponsorship though, you point out the issue of providing value as an important selling point to obtain sponsorship. How more direct can it be from a value standpoint for a TD to tell a potential player "sponsor" that, "If you're the highest bidder, you get the benefit of playing with X pro in the first round?" Why is that any less ethical than persuading sponsors like mechanics they will receive (likely) less direct benefits (unless you're messing with guys cars during the rounds :))?

And Mitch, sorry buddy but pros shouldn't be complaining about where the added cash comes from (presuming it's legal). While it would be nice if more non-DG sponsors gave a fig about how well pros played, no one is putting a gun to the heads of players willing to buy all that CFR plastic or potentially bid to play with a World Champ. Not a single TD should ever be called lazy for not begging for bucks.

The incentive for TDs to get big sponsorship is what? In other sports, they get to keep a nice percentage. In DG, players think they're getting ripped off if the $1000 a big sponsor puts up doesn't all show up in the purse. If Steve was paid what it really cost for his time to do a professional DVD, the total MSDGC purse (including entry fees) should be his and his volunteer videographers ...and more.

Players willing to sponsor the tournament for spectating shouldn't be limited to non-players. If the first round is random anyway... Couldn't it still go on, who'd know and who'd care?

xterramatt
Dec 19 2005, 10:36 PM
I like totally random, or, totally non random, but totally spread out.

No 2 1000 rated players get to play together first round (this should be in every tournament). If you are 1000 rated, your first round should be with assorted pros who are not total cream of the crop. Next, try to spread out the field by area. getting all the NC guys on the same card when they drove up to Mass, well, that sucks. Even if there are 25 of us freaks. Player ratings should also be spread out. If you are the lowest rated player, you should definitely get mated to the card with a 1000 rated player. This is good for both players. It keeps the top pro a little grounded, and allows a newbie a chance to play with some inspiring golfers (hopefully).

So while random is cool, random looking planning may be even better. So maybe you divide the players up into 4 equal groups, the first group is the highest rated players, then the next group is the next highest rated group, and so on.

Now with 4 groups, you can have a lottery for each card on Saturday morning. a volunteer grabs a card from each hat and that's your grouping for Hole 1. Repeat till all holes are filled. Random, but still spread out.

Ya know?

MTL21676
Dec 19 2005, 10:42 PM
I could care less who I really play with, but it does [I'm a potty-mouth!] me off to be in a group with the guy I traveled with and 2 other locals when I turn around and see a guy from Montana and three guys from Europe (yeah, that happened) on the same card.

I also think that skill levels should be seperated for the first round. If you have Kenny and Barry at a tournament, theres a good chance they will probably play together at some point, so why put them together the first round? And, for the same token, any two players with similar skill levels.

I really wish TD's would plan out their first round groupings better than they do now.

Dec 20 2005, 10:03 AM
We are gonna have a $25,000 payout whether we have players bid to play with players or not. Bearing that in mind, I'd rather have no bidding.

And I love Matt's idea of four groups of players. You put the ladies in one hat, the top 18 pros in one hat, and divvy the rest up geographically - so as to minimize the odds that you play with the fella that drove you to the tourney.

Not that my opinion matters (cause setting up the cards is on Jason's side of the fence), but I love that idea - and the reasons for setting it up like that.

Happy Holidays everyone! Discuss at you in a week.

I like the sentiment of wanting to play with new players. We'll work it out. I don't see us selling spots, but it won't be completely random, either. No one has to play first round with the people they always play with. Ah, the artform we call "Doing the Scoreport." We're going to have a little scoreport clan that'll make the masons seem like a bunch of blabbermouths. We'll have secret tribunals, always around the ever-evolving scoreport. It'll be up for months. Actually, two scoreports. Scoreports, beautiful wonderful scoreports, the most transparent of data mediums on tournament day. To join the clan (and we'll try to set up a secret trap door and stuff) you must decipher the following string letters into a sentence. Only then may you look at the scoreport:

otaprpteriden

If no one gets it I'll give a hint or two.

Dec 22 2005, 05:15 PM
My confirmation doesn't say that the dvds have been mailed yet, only that they were registered with the USPS.

Dec 22 2005, 07:58 PM
Yeah, that's the Post Office's dirty secret. Generall Priority mail is one to three days, with a small percentage taking longer for undiscernable reasons, except that they're not obligated to scan till the very end when it's delievered, and they'll put it in the mailstream and you can't really track it. Tracking consists of telling you it's off and when and where it's delivered. The boxes are free, and it's usually faster than commercial ground shipping. Large orders can get expensive, though -- something we'll address in the new year. It is all a learning process.

So, despite it's advantages, USPS Priority Mail leaves you in the dark until your package arrives. THEN you'll see the light.

But don't you think the Post Office should get their act together? They could give unbelievable service in terms of tracking -- the times I've asked them about specific packages they went back and found out stuff they admitted the regular customer doesn't have access to. This is unfathomable. The Post Master General here in town suggested it has to do with NOT crushing the competition with better services. Okay maybe that's just starting rumors, but it seems like there's a big conspiracy out there to stay lazy for really weak reasons.

I wonder if the tournament can truly be considered "full" until the reserved spots are filled with actual people though. The tournament might be "closed" to open registration, but not yet "full" in the strict sense. Gotta love semantics.

Just got the last spot. I had to call Steve on the phone because the computer was being a S#!%.

Look out Debois.

The Pro Open division is now full (except for the reserved Affiliate, Champion, and PDGA Card Pro reserved spots). There is a $5 fee to get on the waiting list. If you make it into the tournament, this $5 gets applied to your entry fee. If you do not make it in, this $5 gets applied to the tournament.

If you are a PDGA Card Pro or your name is Ron Russell or Kevin McCoy, you can still sign up using the PDGA Card Pro or MSDGC Champion options.

All of the reserved spots (Womens, Grand Masters, PDGA Card Pro, Champions, Sponsors) are only reserved until July 1st. At that point, any unclaimed spots will be released to the waiting list.

Maybe you can get the "That kid on the DVD" spot.

Edit: I'll sell you mine for an XBOX 360. Premium. :)

Jan 02 2006, 03:00 PM
I'd recommend getting on the waiting list asap. Last year, we got nearly 20 people off the waiting list into the event.

Jan 02 2006, 03:08 PM
C'mon Man Unit...where's your team support? Couldn't Shane or John or new member Mitch have signed you up? Get on the wait-list and start signing up for the Affiliate tournaments. Your chances of playing the tournament are probably still good.

My spot is available to the highest bidder...opening bid must be at least $2000. Heck, if I'm gonna give up a shot at winning the tournament (a long shot for sure, but a better chance than someone who isn't registered), I might as well get what McCoy got for winning last year. I'll even toss a couple benjamins of the proceeds toward this year's tournament as a sponsorship. :)

Steve,
I think that Josh might have just hit on a great new fundraising idea. Sell your spot on E-bay, give 25% back to the MSDGC. ;)

Either that, or you could sell a couple on E-bay. I bet they would bring in something near a 2001 CE Roc.

My spot should open up to the first on the wait list. I won the WVO last year which is was an affiliate tourney for the 2006 MSDGC. Therefore my spot should be given up, and I should be moved to the affiliate section. That's one more in.

They didn't think of that on their own. That rule appeared after my post was made...just another case of the man trying to keep me down. My offer still stands though. $2000 and I'll give up my spot...to the first guy off the waitlist. ;)

Where did the top TT finish? Oh right, all 1 of you showed up and took 7th. That's pretty sad.
ZZ's finished 13, 16, 22, 24, 44. At least they showed up in big numbers :) Way to represent TT...You guys once again are TTrue to your REAL name, TT (Team Turnandrun)
Looks like 5 FriZZaks, 4 mu/mittenz (whole team baby!), and one lonely TT. (thumbs up guys)

But that doesn't matter, we're just better!

TT might take the top spot, but they aren't getting the collective quality win. That's gonna go to ZZ. Heck, Buono kicked butt. TT can't quiTT. TThey TTend TTo do TThaTT. Man Unit, they could do some damage with the young whipper snappers.... and Val.

Who does the other team consist of?

And what team will rule in the PIE EATING CONTEST?

friZZaks
Jan 02 2006, 10:59 PM
I have an IDEA....
How about a wager. Each team brings something that is an exemplification of their group or each individual. Say TT for ex.. It would be a 1/5 of evan, a britney spears calender, a thumb, a belly shirt. Or we could have a trophy made. The opposite of the Mullet wig. A trphy that passes from member to member of the winning team for a year until its return to the tourney.....I aint scared.
