That's uplifting. I think anything under 20 seconds might make it into the two-person finals, 9 p.m. Saturday, run on time like everything at the MSDGC. Lick on the mike. First round at 8. Both breaks in the live music. Scheduling is simple math backed up by neurotic punctuality.

can we pay for the 2007 tournament at this year's tournament?

Hey Ron,

We're going to give ourselves a break on taking pre-registrations for next year at this year's tournaments. It was difficult and confusing, with a few inevitable errors that didn't get fully corrected for months.

It looks like pre-registration will open in January for those players who:

1) Have attended all three MSDGCs
2) Cashed at this year's MSDGC

Then we'll refine our system for saving spots, we hope this time giving ourselves maximum flexibility while being fair and clear.

Well, at least fair.

Some big troublemaker on the NEFA page asked us what we'd do if someone behaved badly at the MSDGC. That's a question we've never had to deal with. Often, I imagine, we're not there. That's why we have PDGA rules and if some player goes berserk his foursome strokes the heck out of him. Let's do that.

As for tournament incidents, we've never really had any. Don't know what exactly Steve would do, but probably like me speak to the offending player. Whatever it was stops happening and never happens again, or something like that.

If we have to go talk to someone that'll be really awkward. I don't thing it's going to happen.

Here are ALL the rules:

1) No cleats on the DDC court
2) No pushing in the pool area
3) PDGA Rules of Play
4) Camping for players and staff only (otherwise prior permission)
5) No liquids during Table Talk Pie Eating
6) Everyone recylces; no throwing half-eater burgers in the bin of cans, etc.

Again, everything is open for discussion except for the above. Ha ha.

The courses are better than last year by far. The Maple Hill facelift continues unabated, and Rick Belhumeur has weedwhacked practically all of Pyramids. We have four blenders for my pipe dream: morning smoothies at Pyrmiads. They're gonna be free so people won't be bummed when they taste weird. It's our first time with smoothies. A dream Kelley and I conjured in a gated community in Mexico last vacation. Yum, we said. We should have these at our tournament. A good smoothy is like Keith Richards getting all his blood swapped with embryionic fluid in Switzerland.

We had our staff meeting today, deciding some stuff. Smoothies have extended to both sites both mornings. We're all on the same page. We look at the page, and it's squiggly lines, heiroglifical impressionism. You pretend to understand the page.

Is delegation the ability to get people to pick up your slack? We look for deeper meaning but happy hour began just before lunch. Everyone in attendance -- about 25 people -- appeared to be eager to help in our quest to keep practicing. We're figuring out the best way to run a tournament. It's going to take years.

But no low expectations, no, only delusions of grandeur.

Wow, that's a lot of flavors. Should no-sugar be allowed? Another perplexing ethical question. Generally we get five or six flavors, all sugar-filled, but no-sugar sounds good.

My mom made a mean apple pie, but it was kinda gross watching her pour a cup or whatever it was of pure white processed sugar into the mix. Yech.

That was before we got all fake healthful with transblubber and nutraflake. Before Diet Choke. Such innocent times. Hey, we gotta get back there. Devolve first into warewolves and then into amoeboids, realizing that all you need is love, like in the move Altered States. Remember that corny ending?

Remember William Hurt in the bar nicely buzzed leaning back saying he's going to find the primitive creature inside his soul. Well, if you saw the movie and remembered him morphing into a hairier hungrier version of himself, enjoying an UNSANCTIONED nocturnal snack at the local zoo, you know what we're talking about.

Mr. Skull agrees.

Mr. Skull knows, understands, sits back and soaks it all in. Mr. Skull is teaching me a new trick. He throws ME. We tee off at Pyramids Hole 14 and, well, I landed in the pond on Hole 8 Maple Hill, which isn't that great a shot since we were aiming for Maple Hill Airplanes 7, but considering the landing it was fortuitous. We're looking into parachutes, till we figure out how to come down a little softer.

I cut my pinky finger on my right hand, on hole 9 at Pyramids, playing the longs with Mike Dussault, Tim Walsh, Daniel Marcus, and Joel Brown. I went to sweep the tee, broke the hollow metal handle of the broom, which snapped back and sliced a half-inch flapper on my little finger. Ouch.

So I pay my six bucks, which was the bet -- 2, 2, 2 for front, back and total -- I was going to lose anyway. They really didn't want to take it but I was bleeding so had leverage and insisted.

That was the amazing occurance number one, not because it's just a little freak accident, but because I was planning on getting some new chains and a new Stihl chainsaw tomorrow. Honestly, I fear the chainsaw, as it should be feared.

In some insane kinda thought kinda way, I think my life was saved tonight. I'll skip the history and details of this thinking, but it is right on on numerous levels. This is Amazing Occurence Number One.

Number Two. I come back to the house, and Kelley freaks on cue, like my mom once freaked at dad after a "small" chainsaw accident (23 stitches).

So Kelley goes all the way into the attic for the good white athletic tape, and I administer to my wound, and she's all you gotta get stitches, but there's no way. And I say there's NO way I could get you into an emergency room with a little cut like this.

I win the argument with my wife. How often does any many get to utter those words? She gives me the special Canadien Codein painkillers and, no kidding, a Mikarita

Any questions?

Jeff LaGrassa here on hand at Mahhhhshall Street to provide scoring updates / blogging throughout the weekend. Hopefully I'll be able to keep you all continually updated. While there's surely some good stories from the action that's already occurred, I've already witnessed my first memorable event. While moving folding chairs around Jason's house, the tailgate of his pickup truck opened and Gill "surfed' the wave of chairs down to the ground. Never in my wildest dreams could I imagine that someone could "hang ten" in rural Massachusetts! :D

You heard correct - it's widely regarded as one of the finest tournaments in the country! Although I understand that the procedure has changed for next year in that registrations for the 2007 event won't be accepted until January, with the exception of the competitors who have been to all three MSDGCs; they can register this month.

I just checked out the cards in Walt Haney's group on the tee of hole 13 at Pyramids. If I remember correctly, Walt had a smoking run on holes 2-6, with deuces on holes 2,3,5,6 and a three on hole#4. He also had a drop-in birdie three on the gold basket of the par four 12th hole, which plays severely uphill through narrow woods before opening up. It's 'only' 436 feet long, but a 3 is something to savor. 5s and 6s can happen all too easily on this hole!

Aug 26 2006, 01:33 PM
Mike Laterreur had an ace run on hole#18. He skimmed chains, and made the long come-backer for bird.

Just a minute ago Rob Tatro threw his drive OB, re-teed, and smashed the chains solid for what would have been an amazing circle three! Alas, the forceful shot did not stick.

Worcester, Massachusetts is the birthplace of the father of modern rocketry, Robert Hutchings Goddard, and with a bang, Barry Schultz rocketed to the lead in the first round with a smoking round of 42 at the Maple Hill Elements (red) course in Worcester, MA. This record round shatters the previous record of 46 shared by J. Southwick, T. Walsh, L. Leonard, and B. Soleng. Trailing Barry by two strokes is Justin Bunnell with a 44, followed by John Gregory with a 45.

In the other pool, after a round on the Pyramids Gold course, Bard Soleng is in the lead with the hot round of 53. Right on his heels is Steve Brinster, Jeff Cahill, Walt Haney and Chris Sprague who are all at 54.

it's also not a "fix" when we're scoring based on course par, not "pro par 3 on everything". sure, i could have 3 under based on par 63 be better than a 2-under 54 on another course, but really it's just as misleading to do it that way. Now that saturday is over, pools A and B have played the same courses and it's all shaken out. the only temporary "shuffles" in the listing will be around the pool cut (64th place), and those again will be straight by the end of sunday.

Granted, we dont explicitly say we're not basing par on par 3's. but oh well :)

Coppas JUST showed up, and I talked to a fine Leicester Police office I know, and he said we had a noise complaint and the band had to stop, and it seemed about time anyway.

Still my beating heart. I love that rush when Vinny comes in and says the cops are here. They usually only show up to take us to the hospital for minor injuries but major bleeding, and I appreciate the Leicester Police for giving us notice, and for not being mean about it.

It's only misleading if the pars are bogus. The main advantage of Over/Under ranking is when some groups have played more holes than other groups. The "total so far" is useless in live scoring unless groups have played the same number of holes with about the same par, and they rarely have as the updates get posted.

Aug 27 2006, 12:49 AM
There's another thing about our pars that throws that off. Steve and Tom's pars are several strokes harder than mine. Par is this weird thing that fits for some people.

As the fourth round is just getting underway, some liquid sunshine has moved into the area. With moist conditions making for slippery grips and footing, anything could happen on the ultra-challenging Maple Hill Airplanes layout.

In the Open division, the previously daunting lead of Barry Schultz has slipped to just a tenuous three strokes with Chris Sprague nipping at Barry's heels. The hard-charging Larry Leonard and Kevin McCoy are another three back and tied for third place.

In the Women's Open group, Angela Tschiggfrie was closing fast on Des but lost a stroke on two of the final three holes. Des has a 5 stroke lead over Angela going into the last round, and Courtney Peavy is in third another 5 strokes back of Angela, and ten behind Des.

In the Pro Grand Masters, Davis Johnson holds an all but insurmountable lead over Mike Connell.

Justin Jernigan is really making a move on the 4th card. After 7 holes, he is currently beating all the guys on the third card.

The leader group saw some movement on hole#5. It's a lefty hyzer / righty anhyzer that carries water for almost its entire length (approx. 300 feet) Don't fade left! The alternate route is a gauntlet shot through heavy woods along the shoreline. Barry took a 4, while Sprague deuced it, and now he's only three back of Schultz.

Moderator005
Aug 27 2006, 05:33 PM
This is shaping up to be one of the most exciting finishes this year. Through 8 holes, Sprague is now only one shot behind Schultz!!!

Courtney has now overtaken Angela and has closed to two strokes behind Des!

Don't forget to keep an eye on Jernigan playing in the fourth Open card. Through 10 holes, he's beating all of the players on both the second and third cards above him.

After scoring all day at the MSDGC, Doot and I set out at around 6 PM on Saturday to play Maple Hill for my first time. After ten years in disc golf and over 150 courses in the U.S. and Canada, it's such an awesome feeling to still be blown away by a disc golf course. There's not many courses in the world that I would qualify as stunningly beautiful, but Maple Hill is certainly one of them. The combination of forest, Christmas trees, water hazards, huge elevation changes, animal life (I saw a beaver swimming, how often do you see that on a disc golf course?) and the idyllic setting made for a course that took my breath away on every teepad. How fortunate we are to be able to enjoy such a jaw-droppingly beautiful piece of land, and have the opportunity to chuck plastic across it.

Today, on another message board I saw the following:

Barry Shultz, when asked how he liked the courses, said Maple Hill is definitely in his Top 5! Wow, that says a lot! ---Ken Hannan

So many thanks are due to all the volunteers (over 50 of them!) that made this event run so smooth. But most importantly, to Kelley & Jason & Tom & family for opening thier homes to over 200 disc golfers & staff who basically take over their house & property for four days. The frisbee family was alive and well and on display this weekend. :)

With all the activities going on, this is absolutely a must-attend event every year to either play in, help out at, or spectate. I'll say it again: There is the MSDGC, and then there is every other disc golf tournament.

Yes, there a to-par sort would make sense... unfortunately even with players on the same layout, since every hole isnt a par 3 we would have to have each hole's given par in the system and that simply wasnt something in there we had to work with this year. For the future tho, yes I agree with the sentiment.

Huge thanks and greetz to.... well, absolutely everyone who was at MSDGC this weekend. Such a good time, cant wait to be back, can't wait for my body to recover :) haha

Thanks again to the whole staff, great job! Thanks Jason and Kelley for letting me crash in your woods. Thanks Lagrassa for keeping everyone updated on here, sorry I only saw ya what, once? Another great tournament, and I'll definitely be registering in my month window for next year. Congrats to Sprague, Des, and DJ for their wins!

The PDGA doesn't have it quite right yet either since they also sort on Current Total, not Over/Under par in their live scoring. Maybe the PDGA and MSDGC can get there by 2007?

WOW what an amzing week!

Had so much fun hangin out with Unit, ZZ, Po Boys, TTrim and others at the camp fire. Poker was a lot of fun, and I found out something new- I'm a bad player ( or at least thats what I was told)

Night golf Wed night was awesome- why can't I shoot that well in the light?

Thanks to EVERYONE: spotters, camera people, Lick, Jeff, Steve, Kelly, Jason, Grandma, and anyone else who helped out. It really showed- I didn't think it was possible, but the courses looked even better this year!

Kinda dissapointing to have some top finishers skip the awards, but I am sure Larry and Walt wanted to be there, but just wanted to get warm and dry. Barry on the other hand...

Congrats to Chris on a huge win!

I got to catch the final 6 holes for the top 2 cards, and it was great to see some players still in good spirits and having fun, even in the horrible weather under a lot of pressure. I really thought they showed what the MSDGC spirit is all about.

Time to go figure out how I can get in next year!

Making up 8 strokes of the 10 stroke deficit, Courtney Peavy shoots a stellar round of 65, which will likely beat 3/4 of the Open Men field.

Looks like she'll beat Kev that round :o

Not only did she beat Kev by three strokes, but she also tied the Women's Maple Hill Airplanes Gold Course Record of 65, set last year by Des Reading. Considering that Courtney's round was played in a constant heavy rain, it is all the more amazing.

Luke, great to meet you! Who won the poker tournament? -Jeff

That would be local pro Tim Walsh who took his leading chipstack to work on Sjur Soleng in a heads up battle to win the MSDGC Hold'em Tournament title and a cool payday to boot. Thanks to Jason and Steve for allowing me to sponsor the Birdie Skins and build those poker tables for the MSDGC hold'em tourney ... can't wait for next year!!

Congrat's to all the winners and let me ditto all of the kudo's to the wonderful staff and great volunteers :)

Forgot to mention I played drunken glo the night I showed up with a GT Banger and shot -1 on the short layout at Pyramids in my Crocs shoes (www.crocs.com) (3ing the airplane hole), then shot a smokin' 57 on the shorts at pyramids in the tourney :) I'm special alright.

Up until a few months ago I thought those were gardening shoes! I am starting to notice Crocs everywhere. Especially out west in Seattle and Vancouver, a ton of peeps are wearing them there.

Does anyone know how BH earned $191 at the Euro Open?

------------------------
Anyway, what a great disc golf weekend all told (MSDGC + Euro Open), with 32 1000 rated players competing, close to $45,000 in payout, and 11 900 rated women competing this was one of the greatest disc golf weekends ever. Here we come USDGC, someday we're gonna figure out how to get Slushie machines at both courses and then you all better watch out!

I shot better with my Flashlight disc than I did during my final round. Does that mean I'm special too :D

Jason- I left my poker chips there- They were my 2nd set so just keep them and use them on those sweet tables. My flashlight disc is somewhere too, you can give that away or keep it.

Thank you everyone for such a wonderful experience. Everything about this week/weekend was awesome, give or take a few hours of rain. Courtney may have said things best when one actually starts to plan ahead for next summer, alluding to choices some of us will make. Nice to see people actually having fun, socializing, sharing, helping, and being together in uniTTy. Best disc golf experience of my life. Thanks to all of the spotters/staff who were out in the elements all day, always keeping a smile and remaining supportive. Good people. The band rocked, and the "pile of pies" song was hilarious as the pre-cursor to the contest. Top shelf all of the way. Nice to play with Bunnell, Peavey, MiTTenz, Will K., MS, Schwebb, ZZ-S, TW, MA, TD (the pie eating champ), NF, and the real BS (Last cash is good cash!). Nice ace Tommy D., the camera footage should be awesome. Thanks again everyone for all of your work and efforts in putting this event on. Thanks even more for it being so freakin fun!

Four rounds of awesomidity, four tournaments of Hold'em (two wins), one round of DDC (certainly no wins), 1 bout of head-shaving (I certainly lost), and some of the greatest people I've ever met.

MSDGC - where it's it. Thanks to everyone who did anything to make this happen. Vin, you're an animal.

GM was running inside the Open pool and he won that. I think they did something similar at the Japan Open.

Still the best tournament I've ever played, big ups to Jason, Steve and everyone who helped out with the spotting, filming, etc.

You guys are awesome! It was all so worth it.

Couple of greatest things ever:

1) The campgrounds were spotless when you left

2) We donated the leftover food to the homeless vets shelter in Worcester (a mountain of potato and macaroni salad and a couple cases of Table Talk pies)

3) Steve is already viewing the footage for our next DVD.

More later.

So remember the anticlimactic Marshall Street fundraiser disc raffle for the beautiful red custom Innova Discatcher basket, and a guy named Andreas Kratky winning? Everyone goes yay looks around and no one's there cause it's one of our online customers. Andreas Kratky, turns out, lives in Sweden...

...always wanted to know how to ship a basket to Sweden. There's also writing this guy an e-mail and have him believe it, have him not think it's spam? This should be fun, not to mention expensive.

left a couple pairs of sandals where our tent was. Wondering if they were recovered.

the tournament was a major blast. all of it. every last crumb. I especially enjoyed doing what I could to help it run smoother, picking up kegs, collecting trash before people woke up, stoking the fire during rounds, whispering places for videographers to stand for optimal viewing.... It's weird, but I felt like I was a part of the event, not just a player.

Waking up on the course, instead of travelling there gives you a new perspective. Hitting the hot tub in the morning, hydrating with a couple Smartwaters, man, unlike any other tournament. Camping also allows everyone to go to bed at the time they want. And everyone mingles, you meet people you wouldn't normally. It's really a cool place and event, unlike any other I've been to.

I shaved my head tonight. What was left of my dual mohawk. I hid the 'do from my kids. Didn't want to let em think their dad was really crazy.

Pie eating contest was a blast. Great way to get people to participate and have fun. Goofy, disgusting fun. I especially enjoyed watching Kriewald tryo to force down his pie while it tried to force it's way back out. Video will be awesome. Can't wait. Lick doing the pie eating dance and his announcing was also classic. I hope the audio gets in. Funny funny stuff.

One person who may have been missed is Kelley. I wanted to thank her for being a most hospitable host. I mean, we invaded her home for a good 5 days or more and I never once saw her stressed or not smiling. Wow. That's impressive.

Band was great. I am not a jam bander, but they had a bit of old school rap mixed in, and the pie song was great. Groupies too! They brought their own groupies! I thought Southwick and Frizzaks were the only ones with groupies.

As always, the courses were stellar. Love the little touches, like the brooms, the bleaching of the pads after I was complaining about the slipperiness. wow. quick effective solution. Never slipped on one again after that.

Spectacular payout too. Wow. Double what I won at worlds. Best month of disc golf yet! Thanks for being the tournament that most will aspire to be. You make the world a better place. This sport is better and cooler because of the Southwicks and Dodges. Your legacy has already been written. If there were an award for non PDGA Tournament Director of the year, you'd win it. As Ken would say, the hat goes off to you guys.

Matt

Jason/ Steve/ Kelley ~
Much thanks for time well spent. Spectacular courses aside, your little gathering defines how our free time in life should be spent. Steve: sorry I never made it to the house. I caution anyone considering sleeping in their rental car ...good things happen.
Besides expressing my gratitude for such a great tourney, I decided that Christmas is coming early for me so I need to get in touch w/ the guy that made the poker table. I know I saw it posted somewhere but I'm lazy. Send me a link/ phone # for him (Rob?). Thanks

Cheers~
