It is great to see some people with a social conscious that do instead of think. Being proactive for social change is a concept that is widely pondered and rarely enacted...I am now not only excited, but proud to be a part of an event that has such leadership.

Jason,

Hello All,

Thank you for the kind words. I am just now getting acclimated to the I-don't-need-to-sleep-to-post methodology that Jason has been using to his bereft benefit for years.

Two quick things:

1. Audrey's first disc that she wanted to hold was an InnColor Champion Classic Roc from the 04 MSDGC.

2. I am running the PDGA BoD as Communications Director. Steve's BoD Resume (http://www.marshallstreetdiscgolf.com/images/dodge4cd.pdf)

3. Here she is this morning (after pooping into three wet wipes while I was trying to change her)
http://www.msdgc.com/images/Audrey_0314.jpg

Now, seeing as it is well after 4:00, I am going to bed.

Steve you definitely have a slightly different look nowadays. I'd call it "Far Away Zombie," you know, if you had a list of looks, sort of like colors on the paint chart. Our house: "Winter Mauve." True.

When you reach "Zombie with Inadvertant Drooling," I'll know it's time to learn how to update the homepage. The rest you've already set us up nicely with.

You'll be great as Communications Director, though I'm not sure you're seeking -- or should seek -- my endorsement. I will say that you're still a freaking genius and a pleasure to work with and really funny AND fun and definitely definitely go for it.

But such issues are minor compared to the following announcement, concerning the 2006 MSDGC:

The Table Talk Pie-Eating Contest will be ONE small pie for time, with prelims and five-person finals. So you only have to eat two pies max.

We're prepared to justify this decision.

After three rehearsals, it was determined that eating the second pie was pretty painful. The first pie takes at least 30 seconds, which we happily invite contestants to disprove. But don't wait for actual proof; begin speculation immediately.

Furthermore, the only time we can hold this event, with our schedule, is AFTER dinner Saturday. We don't want anyone to get sick. We see the essense of this competition as the ability to scarf down a pie completely as fast as possible. There are people who can run 200 meters faster than anyone's going to scarf a 4-inch pie. I see neck hairs bristling on certain to-be-shaved heads at that assertion, but we tweak where we think tweaking is needed. It'll be okay we'll make everything okay. We of course encourage all comments.

David Feldberg has won the Frizzak Open spot. Which moves Clayton Davidson off the waiting list.

I have updated the player ratings. Walter Haney and Avery Jenkins are tied for the fourth and final Ace Skins spot with a rating of 1019. Any ties after the final ratings update before the MSDGC will be broken by order of finish at the 2006 Pro Worlds.

Audrey Kaye Dodge, our 2 month old, is the Earle Anthony of mini putting.

Since Steve was already registered for the MSDGC, one spot opens up and this moves Luke Butch into the tourney.

Officially, I was banned for personal attacks on PDGA staff. My first thought was, oh, so Nick is NOT on the PDGA staff, since Jeff is not banned. There had to be more.

My research brought me deep into the Bulgarian Mafia, which, as it turns out, is closely aligned with the Masons. No, not the Masons of Da Vinci Code fame, but Joe and Matilda and their three kids. The Masons, the ones who live down the street with the gawd awful pink flamingoes on that patch of crabgrass they call a lawn.

It gets complicated.

To quickly gloss over getting nabbed breaking and entering -- technically -- into Terry Calhoun's house in a desperate quest for information on The Skull, the disc Innova has been sitting on the way gas companies have been sitting on the 80-mile-a-gallon carburetor since the 1950s. It's a cruel world we live in folks.

The Skull isn't a little more aerodynamic or a little more understable or overstable or has just a little better glide at the end of its flight. No, the Skull takes the laws of physics and folds them into a slingshot like James Edward Olmos making origami in Blade Runner.

Essentially, the Skull makes the Wraith and the Surge seem like guts discs with big doggie teeth marks going right through, like the hand of a stranger patting Pierre.

The Skull, while being the greatest disc ever, ruins everything.

So skipping ahead to the penultimate act of our narrative, here I am in front of the hooded tribunal in a dark cave lit with torches that make that crack pipe lighter woooooshhhhhh the whole time.

Theo Pozzy is presiding, Rhett is taking notes, the Masons have made cookies, and the cloaked BoD is assembled round Rob Tatro's Poker Table. I'm summoned, and a sinking fear much like when you suspect you've swallowed the orange salamander you had put into your mouth to freak your niece out with engulfs me. You have a red eft in your esophagus and you're trying to think of what to say.

Theo Pozzy clears his throat, looks troubled, and begins the proceedings against me thus:

"Mr. Southwick, we have not brought you here for your Internet ramblings, as entertaining as they may be. We have brought you here because we need you -- some would say desperately -- we need your skills as a writer."

Really. The future seemed brighter already.

Yes, Theo says, After perusing your posts and discussing your ability to get under peoples skin we had Chuck Kennedy write up a program that rates writing ability. You scored off the charts, with a 1080 writer rating. Steve Dodge was above average with a 982, but you get penalized for misuse of its and its and theyre and their and there big time. You lose 20 points just for writing a lot as one word. We use your 10 most classic posts together with your best 17 out of 20 recent ones. Its pretty scientific.

Wow, I manage, the red eft creeping up my throat, my brain locked on a little scene to the side of things: Jeff LaGrassa and Nick Kight are playing cribbage on a little table, and laughing and having a good time. What IS this place?

Yeah, you demonstrated correct use of the semi-colon in three of four possible ways, and your use and non-use of commas was exemplary, plus your write-arounds on swear words was clear and concise.

So weve discussed it with Innova, Bulgaria, the Masons they DID bring the cookies the PEE DEE G Ayyy, and were willing to let bygones be yo mama and all that jazz. But theres a condition: You must rewrite the PDGA Constitution, and you must coordinate with the BoD on what to write, and your writing will be subject to nebulous approval."

Okay," I stammer. "Is that all?

No, continues Theo, clearly warming to the task.

You also have to rewrite all the sanctioning agreements and players code of conduct.

I accept. You got a deal, I say, slapping myself hard enough on the forehead to cause the recent lobotomy scars to bleed, though pretty sure no one noticed.

And Theo begins, and ends, with So let us declare all good, and wish success on Marshall Street and the Kennebec Disc Golf Association. Make it so.

"Is there any kind of payment?" I ask.

"Just knowing you've contributed," says Theo.

I'm down with that baby.

to be continued

May 17 2006, 09:39 PM
I think people get a pretty good sense of how we are at Marshall Street. We try to be fair...yeah okay there are glitches. But c'mon, we won't really know what we're doing for two or three years.

Some things we have convictions about, and as delicately as I can muster, we don't much like pot splitting before the competition is over. Skins seems particularly susceptible, and I ask our competitors to honor our hard work, and compete honestly.

We've pulled off the amazing feat of selling 53 tee signs. Fifty-three. I sold two in under a minute just last week, but in general when I say "we" I mean Steve Dodge. How about that guy?

We didn't do all this to have great players PLAY. We want to watch them, immortalize them on video, COMPETING. We're so sorry there has to be losers. I don't mean that.

And past is past. We understand there's a history of splits in disc golf, partly because there's so little cash going round. But we're sensitive about this particular issue, so we'd greatly appreciate it if the golfers at the msdgc would respect our wishes, and play for the money straight up.

The other thing is silly, but believe it or not, occupies my mind. No, it's too silly. Okay okay okay. We have an above-ground pool now, between the house and DDC court. We request that all msdgc players using the pool -- you're all invited -- do not push people around the pool area. No throwing people into the pool, no wrestling people around the pool area, no flying drop-kicks. The pool area is a no pushy-push zone. So that's pretty silly.

Hey the guards are gone and they won't be back for five minutes. Threw the Skull 1800 feet today, yeah ate teen hundred it's not a typo. It was at the terraces here at Pyramids. The BOTTOM of the terraces from below the Worcester Airport runway, far far away. Threw it into the parking lot after deflecting off Rick Belhumeur's Explorer.

No wonder the Bulgarians got involved. The Masons stumbled in luckily.

Hey, gotta go now quick but there's sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooooooo much more to say. Okay they're here but they do not suspect.

Pie eating at 8, one pie for time, two finalists playing off at a time determined by them, no pay-in. Strictly for stomach pride. Side betting of course allowed, even encouraged. I laugh inwardly -- or is it now outwardly? -- about how much faster I'm going to eat a TableTalk Pie faster than anyone. Twice.

OS X USERS GET THE WIDGET! (http://www.tripledisc.com/preview/msdgc/MSDGCcountdown.wdgt.zip)

May 18 2006, 09:56 PM
100 days! Let the low-level panicking begin. I'm in the dormant phase of my paihhh training regimen, and we're well past the psycho-gastrointestinal trauma of the early 2-pie practices. I see Table Talk Paiiihhh, and I imagine devouring it. Using mental focus and one of the e-mail videos that Schwebie sent me as my computer screen's wallpaper, I am developing explosive eating power. If you're scared you might as well just admit it now.

In other news, received an e-mail from a top touring pro today discussing something I said about 2006 MSDGC code of conduct. We remain adamant. Absolutely, under no circumstances, will there be diving off the roof into the pool. Did you know that a five-foot pool only has four and a half feet of water!

Maybe I should just list all of "Jason's Bad Rooools" right now, to be up front.

1) Please no dogs. Pyramids recently went no dogs -- a hideously painful decision but not an unnecessary one. We make one exception, and that is any dog that attended the last MSDGC. We can handle a couple dogs for one weekend, just please don't leave them in where we gotta hear them bark the whole round.

2) No splitting pots, either in skins or for first place. There are no ties for first place.

3) No pushing in the pool area. We've seen bad injuries. We're not so much liable as we are responsible for the health and safety of the players at our tournament.

4) RVs can't have electricity, and should park at Maple Hill. Again, we have room for all RVs that were at Pyramids last year to have their same spots at Pyramids this year, and maybe still one electrical outlet, but electricity is sketchy at this point, and was already shorting out last year. We also have camping space concerns. Generators are strictly prohibited.

5) To camp at Pyramids you must be playing in the tournament, or on staff. We request that if you must bring a guest you ask first.

6) No cleats on the DDC Court.

7) And the all-time classic: Don't pat Pierre. Okay pat him if he wants to be patted but just once and quickly and on the head. Then don't pat him again. He's bitten three NEFA Presidents -- not Kelley, but I'm one, Steve Hartwell and John Hart; the only NEFA Administrator Rick Williams; Kyle Enman like five times, Bob, too; and about 20 other people, including several women. We're talking in most cases about no blood, just a nip with maybe a scrape, but often a telltale canine pucture wound bleeds, and we have to show rabies shot records.

To summarize, don't pat Pierre, or reach under tables where he's sitting.

But we're psyched to have you. We like being surrounded by frisbee players, not just at this tournament but pretty much whenever it's light out, and sometimes long afterwards, till well past 9:30.

All rules are subject to change, except for the ones listed above. So much to do remains, along with so little clue as to how to do it. Yeehaa.

The Skull is talking and it says shut up now. Shut up. Okay Skull, I'll shut up, but you tell me why are right arm, the one I throw you with, is glowing. There's only one way to end this:

Mikey Kernan prison break
Let my people go

Continuing the narrative of the Skull and the PDGA meeting in the cave

I figure if I can bring the PDGA Documentation up to a 850 Chuck Kennedy PDGA Writing Rating, right there its a hundred point improvement. If whole passages documents even can be discarded in favor of total rewrites. I can pretty much guarantee a 950 rating. One thing thats really dumb about PDGA documentation: It doesnt so much get rewritten as massaged. You cant massage a document.

But I digress. We were at the PDGA in the cave meeting, and Theo seems to be done, so Im outta there, and I got some writing to do and its all cool but the one way out, the way Im headed fast like I just shoplifted expensive sunglasses is blocked by Terry The Pirate Calhoun, fully attired in special ops camouflage issue, and sporting a mean-looking scimitar, a big bladed thing from the Middle Ages.

Hmmmr, says Theo, clearing his throat, and pulling a Columbo. One more thing

I knew it was coming, and I eyed Terry. It was a pretty weird scene; they werent letting me out yet.

We need your Skull, says Theo, growing a couple inches with the words, like he meant it and that was that. The hammer falling, the bell tolling, the very last putt of the tournament. Ching.

I will have to get that to you. Actually, I will go get it for you right now, I say. But theyre still not letting me go. Terrys doing a couple Bruce Lee practice swipes with the scimitar, and though the situation is approaching the proverbial boiling point, there is no worry, not yet.

We gotta back way up, to the early 1970s. Its a weird thing that happened. At a wedding in California a couple of young rebels spiked the punch with peyote, and in underground frisbee lore this punch has gone down historically as the Dunipace-Adler Punch, the one that gave birth to the breakthrough that had to be buried forever. The Skull, the disk that allowed for throws of up to half a mile. Four were made. Through a series of seemingly astronomical coincidences, I wound up with one.

To put it into perspective, I walk out my door, and from the DDC court, I throw the Skull with a little anheizer over Holes 14, 15 and 16 at Pyramids, over Marshall St, over Steves house, over t o Maple Hill. Hole 17, over 16. over the big pines over 7 and 8 and into the pond dagnabit. Luckily the Skull not only floats, it comes to shore. Um, thats not entirely true. I swam out into the middle of that murky pond for my Skull at midnight late in August of 2004. Cam Todd held the flashlight.

The Skull isnt so much a tool for playing disc golf as one for deciding how far youre going to walk the dogs.

950 writing rating? The Skull and I scoff at 950 writing.

And with that, the secret is out. My Skull speaks to me. I will just say that once, and hope it gets lost in seas of meaningless threads. My Skull speaks to me. There, another rule broken.

So all my friends and family and all the people who give a hoot are looking at me sideways for awhile and the few who love me the most come straight up and tell me Im done gone off the deep end, and I smile back and say yes yes I love you too but people cant you come up with something ORIGINAL. Big frowns all around. Theyre not getting into THIS trip, my little SKULL trip. Heck with them.

My beautiful, wonderful Skull. My precious sex times heroin.

My Skull speaks to me. Its telling me to tell everybody something. Im too mature to say it, but it still makes me laugh. The Skull is so funny.

I pull the Skull out the back of my shorts over sweatpants and I hold it up to Theo and the BoD seated around the great oak table. You mean this?

The Skull says Now or never, and I roll it between Terrys legs and as he bends down to look where the Skull is rolling and I sidestep him and 50 or 60 feet down a dark tunnel I grab the Skull still on the roll and were off and down running like the wind, gone with voices fading behind, gone like your first girlfriends virginity the weekend you were gone.

To be continued

No problem, you guys are the best. Triple Disc, WITH a space, got it. Triple Disc. No poolball this year, as we're making time for live music and pie eating. That doesn't sound right, does it? Hmmm. Can't see a way to fit it in and do it justice, though I'd like to have a big straight race down Hole 1 but it'd be tough to fit it anywhere we're so action packed it's ridiculous. Our long-range plan is to not have poolball in 2006, but to CONCENTRATE on it in 2007. Long-range hype.

The Skull says this tournament is developing a mind of its own, getting out of hand nuts, but unfortunately the European PDGA Major is the same weekend and a bunch of studs are going to that. Sniff.

We've developed certain beer tenets here at Pyramids, the Marshall Street party spot, where we've adopted a strict gotta have a keg of Pabst, too, routine. Pabst Blue Ribbon. If you've seen Blue Velvet, Pabst Blue Ribbon is already indelibly etched in your mind. And it's great beer; how do you think it won the Blue Ribbon? Plus, it's the very cheapest keg beer, which puts it yet in another special category. It's like $50 a keg. At our events here lately we've been going with something special first, tapped at noon. At Pyramids 17, won by Dr. Doug, we had Bershire Black & Tan. It was tasty, and filling. Later we swilled the keg of the lighter Pabst, killing it by 7. There was a 30-pack run and, instead of DDC, at the behest of Daniel Marcus, we played guts till dark.

For the MSDGC we'll follow future standard PDGA NT requirements, providing an eclectic mix of five or six kegs of very nice beer. Enough so no one goes thirsty. The single keg of Pabst will be the teaser, the tastiest and most refreshing, the one you might miss if you blink. Later it'll be "were you there for the Pabst? Wow that is the best beer EVER!"

Sam Adams something, and something dark, and some micro-pale ale. And something weird.

Funny thing is half my friends drink Bud outta da can and nothing else. Oh well.

Everybody wants to hear about The Skull and I almost hate talking about it. The Skull is actually MORE abrasive than I, though luckily it can't type.

The Skull has been talking to the other three Skulls via their built-in plasma transmitters. It's really quite a disc, putting all of today's cell phone/cameras to shame. For example, throwing a beat-up X2 at 52 miles per hour puts you in the pond on Hole 8 at Maple Hill, but 65 MPH is perfect.

But I digress.

For Bahstin beers, Harpoon is my fave, followed just north of the border by Red Hook. My brother from Medfid, has some connections to Harpoon, maybe I can see if a keg can be got. I've been to a couple Christmas parties at the brewery, It's a swell group of folks. Maybe you can invite them out for a free day of disc golf. You might spear them into a sponsorship. They aren't all big businessy like Sam Adams is these days...

I know you guys up north get your fill, but it is hard as heck to get Magic Hat or Otter Creek down here in the dirty south. It's like asking NASCAR fans to put a shirt on. We tend to roll with the Highland Brewing Co. in these parts. Any brewery that will let a bunch of disc golfers sit around in their basement and drink to no limit, is alright with me. Team Tasgall!

I thought all New Englanders drink Naragansett, especially since they have a rebus puzzle on the Cap! I drank quite a number of "nasty-gansett's" while in College in NH..we also called them "Greenie Meanies". It was brewed in someone bathtub in RI. Try a case or two...and don't mind the bean ache the next morning!

Ugh, Magic Hat is easily Vermont's worst brewery. That Circus Boy beer of theirs is disgusting.

The best breweries in Vermont are McNeill's in the south (Brattleboro) and Trout River in the northeast kingdom.

Northern "Greenie Meanies" are Naragansett...and southerners use Gennie cream.

And a concentration puzzle is called a rebus.

Hey, it's not like we can wash down every grinder we eat at the bubbler or with a 12-ounce tonic. I used to do Gansett before I found Schlitz. Friday nights we'd drink Green Death Private Stock, when we weren't pounding 40s of Colt Malt Liquor that is.

And what's wrong with Magic Hat Number 9, with its hint of apricot and full, fun flavor?

I can't remember which Berkshire Ale it was, but yes we can. We're definitely doing the Black & Tan again. Luke thanks for the thread lift from time to time. We appreciate it, and we appreciate the rest of you practicing hype-masters. Cam Todd said it was all about the hype. We took that to heart.

It IS all about hype. Well, you gotta back it up but if you can you should definitely hype it. Man my Chuck Kennedy writing rating is sinking fast; I'm down to a pedestrian 1012, after getting into a couple sentences I didn't know how to punctuate, committing a couple blatant misspellings of proper nouns, and once using quotes inside quotes without going to single quotes inside the double quotes. Dang dang dang.

I'm also losing invisible points just for being too creative for Chuck Kennedy's extremely advanced grammar parsers mixed with math synthesizers. The Skull says I'm talking crap, and he had me almost understanding the writing ratings, but I asked a couple of questions about auxilliary verbs and it became clear that only Chuck understood certain suble connection between grammar and math in his system.

It reminded me of one sober phase where I decided to understand the PDGA Player Ratings, and I got all the way to actually asking Josh Connell some intelligent questions. We reached a point where Josh had to admit he didn't understand all the Kennedy math. The NEFA Player Ratings, however, pretty much seem right to me. We have low ratings in New England cause we're not really that good, just sometimes. But at the Maple Hill D-Tier our ratings seemed really high we think because so many good players were there. Is there truth in that?

My PDGA round ratings and player rating have always mirrored Josh's New England Player Ratings, and seem right on compared to my buddies' ratings. Just at this past PDGA event the ratings seemed about 10 Points too high. Is it true -- smart people suggest it -- that your round ratings and hence your playing rating will be higher when you play at tournaments with a lot of great players? There were a lot of great players at Maple Hill, and the ratings seemed about 10 points high. Just an impression, and I'm just itching to be shot down and educated.

I also know I deserve my measly 1012 Writing Rating, cause I'm just too lazy to bring it over to Word for spellchecking.

ck34
Jun 01 2006, 09:37 PM
There was some truth to playing with higher rated players producing somewhat higher ratings. However, that was adjusted in Sep 2005 and seems to have solved the imbalance. Now, it's a coin flip whether playing the same course with a higher rated versus lower rated group will give you the same or slightly better rating. It used to be more one-sided. If the JC formula hasn't changed, it's possible his numbers have diverged by a few points from the PDGA calcs due to our tweaks in the last 12 months that have finally stabilized as of April. No more formula changes pondered or planned.

Jun 01 2006, 10:02 PM
Wow, that's pretty heady stuff. One question: will this tweak affect individual ratings differently because players play at different frequencies, and may not garner benefits because they don't play as often?

Wait, no idea what I'm taling about. Way way over my head. I'm just gonna take my weak drive scared putt 1027 -- my highest rated round ever -- to the bank and it's mine cause round ratings are truly, honestly the total balls of all time. Imagine, guys like us, guys who love sports stats, looking at our own stats. It's great. We should admit it freely. It's the greatest thing ever! I am so not kidding it's unbelieveable.

I'd almost make Chuck Kennedy a pagan god of disc golf or something, but he's just a little too smart and handsome and muscular for me to accept him completely.

ck34
Jun 01 2006, 10:14 PM
Since we double weight the most recent 25% of anyone's rounds, there's no formula benefit in your personal rating calculation of playing more rated rounds, other than the obvious benefit of more practice and tournament experience to presumably become a better player. No math in that concept. :D

Jun 01 2006, 10:36 PM
Maybe it's beyond math. Play play play.

Jason, how can you even question the player ratings going up when you play with higher rated players? Almost all of my posts are on the same threads that you write on and my writing rating can't top 980? If your theory was correct, my writing rating would be catastrophic by now just from my posts being in the same proximity as yours. What's your Skull have to say 'bout dat?

Jun 15 2006, 08:51 PM
We're standing around the parking lot like Hank Hill and this guy says "How 'bout a Disc Golf Women Calendar?''

The foursome of us begin talking about that, and we're amused and I say, "All proceeds to women's disc golf." We mull that over. And we begin talking about pictures of beautiful disc golf women -- okay kill me we're guys. But there's much much more in this idea than THAT.

Then a little later it becomes clear that the proceeds from this calendar should go to the Pro Women's added cash at the 2007 MSDGC.

Each month could be laid out around the central photo like the back of a baseball card, with career stats. Plus extra pictures in little boxes.

$50 calendars. You don't know us here at Marshall Street; we cut people's heads off with chainsaws. That's maybe a slight exaggerration but we've thought about it.

*************************************************
I like having a disc golf course in my back yard. I'm not gloating believe me there are disadvantages. But it's nice to walk out the front door and meet a genius from time to time.

Jun 15 2006, 10:48 PM
I get it. Free Marshall Street care package to the first poster to solve the trilogy with the correct answer.

Two and a half small but significant caveats: all posts beyond two and a half words are immediately disqualified, and Steve Dodge is ineligible, and has to do 20 pushups.

There's no time limit on the pushups but don't you think we should get that out of the way first?

Jun 19 2006, 08:57 PM
So what, I'm talking to myself here? I had a very paranoid thought that the PDGA put me on universal ignore. No one sees my posts except me, so I'm left wondering why no one's saying anything. After seeing my posts on my wife's computer, I realized the PDGA was able to put me on regional ignore, basically every region but mine. Clever clever boys those PDGA geeks. Evil too.

So then I'm thinking: My posts are so great people can't even respond to them, and that theory crumbles pretty quickly if you think about it. More likely people are going, "Aw man you shouldn't have said that. That was really bad. You're SUCH a pathetic drunk."

So I'm sticking with the universal ignore conspiracy.

************************************************** *****************

So what about the 2007 Women of Disc Golf Calendar (notice the re-arranged title)? With personal career stats and highlights like the back of baseball cards. This is NOT brilliant? Man, no one's called me brilliant for like three weeks, and that guy was confusing me with Steve Dodge.

Not to stir things up, but wasn't a similar idea posed to you guys by a one Mr. Mitch Sonderfan? Only his idea didn't involve the womens... just a disc golf calendar, with pictures of the best courses in disc golf.

You also need to start a gift registry so those of us crazy disc golfin' couples gettin' hitched can tell all of our wedding guests what we want from Marshall Street :D

Jun 19 2006, 09:25 PM
Mitch is a big goofball.

Steve Hartwell already did a disc golf hole calendar, I think several times. I hope he does another. And that idea is thoroughly explored already.

But the Women of Disc Golf calendar would be something new. We could take the pictures this August. We know photographers. We'd need permission from the women, and they'd probably be okay with it.

The only question left is How famous do you want to be?

Jun 19 2006, 09:33 PM

Unfortunately we've lost a bunch of great players who got a sweet deal going to the PDGA Europe Major. We are especially sad to lose Val Jenkins and Burl, but we will prevail. More paihh for everyone.

Deep down we want to have the best event ever, with the best beer, the best food, the best on-line stats, the best tee pads, the best silly antics, the best party, AND the best competition. Just the way we are. We strive high and go from there. We're disappointed to lose such great players, but don't blame anyone but ourselves, for not being bigger and better.

Chuck, you forgot your smiley face emoticon that points out that you are kidding. We are not a PDGA event due to the inconsistent and mandatory Marshall program, the video rights, the mandatory collared shirts, and the fact that the PDGA would not let Jason Southwick be the TD of his own event.

If you want to rehash this whole thing, I'd be happy to. We have more insight in to how it all went down. And it had nothing to do with beer. So please, in the name of all that is honorable, the next time you make a joke like that, put the smiley emoticon on it so we can all just sit back and laugh at the ridiculousness of posts like that.

Otherwise we're considering the bribery angle, with something humiliating built in, like mandatory bra over collared shirt first round. That might be too silly for some people but as always it's the thought that counts.

Maybe a Homer hat, though that would conflict with our no beer during rounds policy. You could fill it with vodka and pretenet it's water.

Ode To Brockybrock

Take the Five Spots home
The little paths where so many New Englanders Roam
You'll say to the dealer Ive been here before, Ron.
Like Ryker and crew when Crusher goes
I sheet you not they cut off your arm and put it back on

It will be a re-recognition, 3-D deja vu, and buried sex memories all in one
You know this place, you've been here before
You remember? I remember you had fun
Just get through hole 11 without a four

You know this place Brockybrock
It'll be like riding a bicycle
We'll pull the holodeck out, and break the lock
Bring it to the DDC court -- the same ol' cycle

Birdie holes 2, 3, 5 and 6 and you're on a roll
Like looking in the mirror and recognizing your face
Captain Silly Antic will be switching to impulse control
Let the betting begin on the pie eating race

Make it so that we have never changed, will not change, cannot change
Make the weather like a burn your feet on the sand day
(Why after it's all over do we look like dogs with mange?)
Bring it on, many paths baby but just one way.

The way back home.

Hey Jason and Steve - sending in my registration tonight. Will a laptop with an aircard do. I can bring it with me if you would like. We used it to do the live scoring at the Skylands Classic last year.Let me know.

I also have one of these. It works anywhere sprint phones get service and is fairly high speed(especially for dial up). However I don't have Excel on my computer right now. but i probably could bring the card and software to run on any laptop.

If Steve or Jason can confirm that their neck of the woods has Sprint/Verizon service (depending on which provider your aircard works with), laptops with aircards would be AWESOME. I remember trying to run wire (that I had to try and crimp myself! lazy bastages! ;)) from grandma's house to TC last year for the laptop we had at Maple Hill.

Cameras and tapes will be provided.

If you know anyone that would be willing to help out by filming the MSDGC, then we would love to hear from them. We treat our camera folks like honey coated, deep fried twinkies with butter. This is the gig you want. This is the gig your mother wants you to want.

We have a horrible Draconian refund policy which states that you don't get your money back. We did this because we did not want folks to register in case they could come. We wanted folks to register because they knew they were coming.

One thing we did not think about was the fact that explaining this to folks would be so hard to do - and make us hurt inside so much.

Jason and I talked about it and we are going to use this non-returned money towards a positive, constructive end and donate half of it to the Ace Pot (the other half goes towards their MSDGC shirt, which anyone who backs out still gets).

With one more person dropping out, the Ace Pot is currently up to $300.

Just got back from vacation and am learning how to use an Apple Computer, wishing I were riding my bike. Wishing I were walking barefoot on sand somewhere, where the smallest unit of time is a season.

Wishing the label printer hadn't wound up all inside itself today right when I had 45 minutes left before post office closing. Wish we hadn't just missed the post office's closing bell, with 30 packages in the bed of the truck, going back home for re-dating. Someone please kill me.

Learning the Mac, the day after our vacation, in our cellar where the washing machine and dryer used to be, surrounded by discs, accessories, phones, customers and confusion.

One of those days like a bad round. But not just a bad round. I'm talking a round when you sprain your ankle, forget rolling papers, swat humongous deerflies continually, and start with a fivesome that turns into a sixsome at hole 7. Three of the players are among the world's 10 slowest, and no one has beer.

We welcome the players and staff who are coming to this year's MSDGC, but please don't expect sanity. There's none of that here. I'm saying this just to temper your shock when you arrive, see me, and go "Oh my gahhhhhd!"

Dodge, how'd you get your mitts on a copy of "Sober"? I was seriously thinking of writing a song for the bloopers section, but it would probably save me time if something from my current album works.

Aug 02 2006, 05:33 PM
I pledge bouts of megalomania, ACDC with H, and a burning desire to run a PDGA C-Tier with beer during rounds. Call it a fixation; I call it a long-needed fix.

I accept the position. I'll do my best. Looking forward to bringing the six misguided souls who voted for me out of the woodwork.

I'm very sad to say goodbye to the PDGA Constitution. There was some good stuff in there.

Let's have a mantra: inclusion, growth, excellence, free beer (oh my), inclusion growth excellence free beer (oh my), inclsngrthxlencefreebrr.

You use this just once in a while, to break up the usual f the machine mantra. May your weirdness run deep. May my alcoholic friends be allowed at PDGA events again without surreptitiously breaking (stoopid) PDGA rules.

We just had a tournament in Vermont, in North Calais. We as in Paul Olander, TD, owner and caretaker. Drinking allowed, bad behavior not allowed. Not really such a fine distinction, but an important one. Don't throw the bathwater out with the muffins, is what that means.

We're too old already to make and enforce stoopid rules. Have no mention whatsoever in the PDGA documentation about drinking etc, but do have stipulations about bad behavior. Me I've never had a problem with bad behavior at our tournaments. If someone starts being bad a couple words stops it. At both Pyramids 16 and 17, Brent got all drunk and started -- no kidding -- kicking people in the chest with the sole of his sneaker. Hard. He kicked Mike Dussault so hard Mike went down dazed. Brent was laughing the whole time.

This is the type of behavior that, as a TD, I have no problem with. It actually seemed appropriate. We were playing guts, so you have to figure that just changes your personality. Plus the keg.

ck34
Aug 02 2006, 05:37 PM
The only PDGA restriction on alcohol is during rounds. Not even between rounds is forbidden. Not sure why that's such a problem.

Aug 02 2006, 05:54 PM
Because some people want to drink during rounds, which takes up around five hours of the day, and especially the afternoon hours are prime drinking hours once you've had a Majic Hat #9 (Vermont) from the keg at lunch.

On a personal note, that increases the irony, is that personally I don't drink or do anything like drinking during tournament rounds, with a few doubles exceptions, and a very few times I just gave up and "started drinkin early." But generally, including my last 20 tournaments, I don't touch the brewsky till the last round is over. I just appreciate the desires of other. It was always a battle here in New England to get people to come to your tournaments. We tried to make it easy, by not giving anyone an excuse not to come. Good hospitality and don't worry bout a thang kind of spirit. It worked. Now we fill in two seconds, forcing us to come up with weird saved spots strategies. We're still bad at it.

We have INCREDIBLE tournaments here in New England, a lot of them on bad tees. Hey, we've got a ways to go yet.

Making a course here in New England (and environs) isn't the same as in other places. We seem to have more rocks and certainly just as many trees as anywhere. But we have hills and dales and streams and ponds and lakes. It's beautiful up here. If you come to New England you just have to play...

Too many choices

TomMar
Aug 02 2006, 06:06 PM
I accept the position. I'll do my best. Looking forward to bringing the six misguided souls who voted for me out of the woodwork.

I must confess, that I am one of those six misguided souls. It was late and I decided to fill out my PDGA ballot. Probaly should have waited until the next morning so I wouldn't be falling asleep at the computer. When I saw the write-in location for Mass State Coordinator I was paralyzed with indecision. So I thought about disc golf in Massachusetts and the first two names that came into my head were Steve and Jason. Since Steve was already on the ballot I wrote in Jason. At the time I thought it was ironically funny. I also assumed that I would be the only misguided soul to write in Jason. Well I guess I wasn't the only one.

There must be some kind of meaning to this. Why else would six people vote for Jason. Maybe this just means that Massachusetts is too good for the PDGA? Maybe it means we are really progressive and are years ahead of the rest of the country when it comes to running tournaments. I think it means that Massachusetts is better than everyone else, but thats just my useless opinion.

One lingering memory from our bike trip to Vermont was the nasty kidney shaped one-serving (offically two-servings) pie. All sugar. Couldn't finish it, threw the rest away.

Table Talk Pies aren't anything like that. They're the perfect combination of crust and filling, a symbiotic melding of fruit and flavor inside a paiihhhhhhhh. Circular, four inches. Sweet but not too sweet. Now how many seconds do you really think it's going to take to eat one 4-inch Table Talk Pie, the flaor of your choice? 16 seconds. Anything beyond that will be phenomenal, considering we're serving dinner at 6 and having the first pie-eating round at 8 (all on Saturday, after one day of play, in case anyone wants to bail early), finals at 9 p.m, during the first live music break. Lick on the mike.

Ever met Lick? We take our silly antics seriously here in NEFA-land.

Two contestants make it to the finals, they choose each other's flavor there. Again one pie for time. Gotta eat the whole thing, small crumbs not withstanding. No washing down. Any questions, comments?

Looks like I am able to play this tournament afterall, however it's going to be more of a vacation than a disc golf trip. So what are some "non" disc golf things/places to do or go see around that area for a Wisconsinite? Any real nice places to go visit within a few hours of there?

Since I live in Massachusetts I cant really tell you from a tourist perspective of where to go, but I know a trip into Bahston (Boston for those unfamiliar with our accent) can be fun if you know where to go. I believe the Sam Adams Brewery is a popular tourist attraction in Boston, so if you like your beer, that is worth a visit. However I think if you come to New England you have to play some of our other courses. A little over an hour east of Marshall Street, you'll find Borderland State Park, which in my heavily biased opinion is the best course. About an hour west of Marshall Street puts you in Manchester,CT which is home to the beautiful course known as Wickham Park. Why come to New England and only play Marshall Street, it doesn't make sense to me.

Wish I could be there! Its too bad most of the best tournies are smack dab in the middle of prime family vacation time.

Maybe next year!

What kind of sweet video cams did the MS crew pick up?

Hey Joe, they're really nice cameras. Don't know the make or velcro level, but if I had the brochure I could fake it.

I hate culture. Once in a while a museum is okay, but driving into Boston is...THE WORST THING IN THE WORLD. I know people do it every day but they're twisted. Better to stay home and watch hummingbirds flirt.

There are a couple of touristy things to do in Worcester that are pretty fun. First, the Ecocenter of whatever it's called. Otters are huge hams (did someone say "ham?"), and bullfrogs are cool. Plus planetary facts to go woo. It's like a zoo and a science center all in one. Very cool. Then there's the Higgins Armory. Keep waiting for one of the suits of armor to come to life. You can play chess there.

Both are inside of ten miles from Marshall St.

Best Italian Restaurant and big-screen sports bar: Biaggio's. We have directions, somewhere. We have a Directions Team, which gives you three ways to get there and vociferous arguments why one or the other is best. Basically, take a right upon exiting Pyramids, and get the rental with the GPS.

So Jason, who is going to be spotters at the MSDGC, and what are their credentials? :D Do they wear watches and clothes that distinguish them as non-professional spotters as referred to by Mr. H and Player A? ;)

I think the MSDGC should hook up every player with www.caddiechicks.com (http://www.caddiechicks.com) or at least have them spot. Just a thought.

Heeren:

You could go a little north and hike Mt' Monadnock. It's the second most hiked mountain in the world. Pretty cool place to go. About 2 hours north. If that's too far, Northampton is an interesting trip. Sturbridge Village is interesting, or you could go for dinner at Longfellow's Wayside Inn in Marlborough. It's a 300 or so year old Inn which serves some tasty new england cuisine, a little fancy, but a great change of pace.

Then again, you can go to the place with the longest name in the US. It's pretty close. Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggcharbumagungamogg. Which roughly translates to "I fish on my side, you fish on your side, nobody fishes in the middle".

Or you could go check out the previous Casa de Peckham (http://www.xterrier.com/1793/), in North Reading. Oh the excitement.

After seeing Chris this past week, I don't think he is quite ready for Northampton, unless he sticks to places like The Iron Horse. Of course, maybe he just puts on a reserved front and really would be down with all that NOHO has to offer. I'd stear him towards Amherst, where there is a larger safety net, and more casual and reserved activities, along with the eccentrics. How bout Old Deerfield, or the Quabbin reservoir, or the Basketball hall of fame. Or you can call my brother and he may get you to help with some of the Farming up in Shelburne Falls. You can swim in a pothole up there! They grows all kinds of things up in them Berkshires. ;)
