It is now official !!!

The PDGA announced at it's annual awards banquet at the world championship in Pennsylvania last night that the 2006 PDGA Pro World Championship has been awarded to:

Augusta, Georgia

It is hard to believe that it has already been ten years since Augusta hosted the PDGA Amateur World Championship in 1996.

The event will be directed by PDGA Board member Pete May and will be headquartered at the Julian Smith Casino at Lake Olmstead Park next summer. Three hundred of the worlds best professional players from approximately 10 countries are expected to attend. Look for major improvements to be made to all Augusta area courses in preparation for the event.

Lake Olmstead Park (http://www.earthoffice.net/discgolf/coursemapcard.php?playerid=10&courseid=4039) in Augusta has now been added to the new Google Maps disc golf course directory that Pat Brenner (aka Sandalman) is currently developing. The Lake Olmstead layout will be improved and lengthened for the 2006 Pro Worlds and this course will more than likely be used in the finals. The detailed course layout is best viewed in "Satellite" mode.

Fun Facts:

Zoom out two levels and you will see Riverview Park, another 2006 Pro Worlds site, in North Augusta, SC (ball fields on right side of map) just across the Savannah River from Lake Olmstead. A detailed course layout will soon be added to the Google Maps course directory.

Hole 9 at Lake Olmstead is only about 3,000 feet (as the crow flies) from hole 1 at Riverview Park.

The Augusta National Golf Club is the golf course visible just above and to the left of Lake Olmstead Park. The Augusta Country Club is the golf course just below and adjacent to Augusta National.

Hole 1 at Lake Olmstead is only about 3,000 feet (as the crow flies) from Amen Corner at Augusta National.

The Augusta National is located on Washington Road, which is the same road that Wildwood Park and the National Disc Golf Center is on.

Lake Olmstead Park - #3 and #16 have intersecting fairways?

Believe it or not...yes they do. Something I never thought I would ever do but it actually works in this case due to the terrain and foliage. The tee pad on hole 3 is about 40 feet higher than the tee pad of hole 16 so they are really over and under fairways which do not conflict with each other at all. Both holes are very interesting and unique shots and I did not want to choose one over the other.

All of our local courses will be evaluated and improved prior to Pro Worlds 2006. Holes 17 and 18 are almost assuredly to change due to a new fountain located behind the clubhouse building.

The course layout for Pendleton King Park (http://www.earthoffice.net/discgolf/coursemapcard.php?playerid=10&courseid=4027) has now been added to Sandalman's Google Maps course directory.

Area will host world's best in disc golf
By Rob Pavey | Staff Writer
Saturday, September 24, 2005

More than 300 of the world's finest disc golf professionals will converge in Augusta next summer when the area hosts the 2006 PDGA Professional Disc Golf World Championships.

"We're expecting about 90 percent of those golfers to be from the USA, with others coming from six to 10 other countries," said Brian Hoeniger, executive director of the Professional Disc Golf Association, which relocated last year to Columbia County from Toronto.

Hoeniger and ther association officials announced the world tournament Friday at Julian Smith Casino.

Tentative dates for the event are Aug. 8-13, with singles competition spread among three courses: Lake Olmstead in Augusta, Riverview Park in North Augusta and a temporary course that will be established at the Hippodrome, also in North Augusta.

Disc golf is played like traditional golf, but players use a flying disc instead of a ball and clubs. The sport's popularity has mushroomed in recent years, with an estimated 500,000 people playing regularly, according to the association.

Augusta's first disc golf course opened in 1989 at Pendleton King Park, with the Augusta Disc Golf Association formed a year later.

Since then, several courses have opened in Richmond and Columbia counties, and several major tournaments have been held here.

The area's disc golf history, coupled with evolving plans to create a 2,700-square-foot national PDGA headquarters at Columbia County's Wildwood Park, make Augusta the perfect place for the world championships, said Brian Graham, chairman of the National Disc Golf Center Committee.

"We started out with just 10 people," he said. "Now Augusta is the epicenter of disc golf nationwide."

The 2005 World Championships were held in July in the Allentown/Lehigh Valley area of Pennsylvania, Hoeniger said.

After the 2006 event in Augusta, the tentative plan is to hold the world championships in Virginia Beach, Va. in 2007 before moving to a venue somewhere in Japan for 2008, he said.

Augusta's event could attract as many as 500 spectators, Hoeniger said.

"Most of the people who come out to watch are those who also play the sport," he said. "But we have a lot of amateurs and casual players here and I think a good awareness campaign here in the community could get us 500 spectators."

Tammy Stout, executive director of the Greater Augusta Sports Council - which worked to help bring the event here - said that while it is too early to measure the economic impact of such a tournament, its presence here can only benefit the community.

"In many ways, we're at the beginning of a long road with many of these great events," she said, adding that - in her opinion - disc golf will rank among the successful equestrian, rowing and soccer events that also help bring visitors and positive economic impact to the Augusta area.

I'm curious as to why the event capacity is set at 288. I realize the 4 18-hole courses full of 4-somes is 288. But there are bound to be 5-somes in some pools and 3-somes in others since it would take an incredible amount of luck for the numbers to work out perfectly.

Looking back, attendance has been (2005 - 2001): 301, 332, 336, 224, 357. The location is pretty close to some high density DG areas, so I imagine demand will be as high as it has ever been.

ck34
Feb 01 2006, 09:54 PM
A couple reasons for 288:
1. That's the format and capacity the bidders were willing to provide. It's not like hosts are knocking down the door to host Pro Worlds. So you go with what the hosts feel they are capable of, and capacity is just one of several important elements in granting a site.
2. Points might actually mean something to get invited.
3. For a given amount of added cash, payouts can be higher with fewer players.
4. With attendance declining some feel one reason might be that the event has gotten too long. The proposed format for this year with a 288 cap will eliminate full two days of singles play compared with last year with only one less round of play.

dave_marchant
Feb 01 2006, 11:25 PM
Thanks for the input, Chuck. Your first 3 reasons make sense to me.

This does not make sense. "We have had an average of over 300 people coming to Worlds. If we make it shorter, more people who want to come will be able to come, so we'll not allow them to."

The only way I can make sense of this is that increases your point #2 (actually making points mean something). That seems like pretty punative action against a pretty large number of people while doing absolutely nothing to affect the primary purpose of the event - to crown a world champ. In effect it hurts the world champ (and the other top finishers) by taking money out of his pocket.

Please do not take this as a gripe. It is simply me trying to understand.

ck34
Feb 01 2006, 11:43 PM

Common misconception. Reducing the number of players can actually increase payout to the top places as long as there's sufficient added cash. The amount of added cash as a percentage of entry fees is the key element. Imagine if only three players showed up and the division gets $20,000 of added cash. That would be a pretty good payout for first place for a $180 entry fee. If you graph this scenario, the payout for first place drops off as the field size increases assuming the $20,000 added remains constant. Then, first place will eventually rise as the percentage of added cash becomes relatively small in comparison to entry fees.

I remember several years ago at the Majestic when we first had a bunch of added cash for Open, maybe $5000. Ron Russell was upset the Open field was only going to be about 24 players. I asked him if he'd rather spread $5000 added among 24 or 50 players. A light bulb went off because at the time, players were so used to field size being the primary way purses were generated.

I do agree that two goals are conflicting: (1) encouragung turnout by shortening the event and then (2) capping the field to a number smaller than we've had the last few years. Thus, we won't know whether shortening the event would encourage more players to attend other than looking at the waiting list to get in.

[/QUOTE]

There are advantages and disadvantages to everything. The key is to consider all of your options, weigh the good against the bad and make the best choice that your situation allows.

"Encouraging turnout by shortening the event" has never been our goal. Unlike past World's, our goal is not to be the biggest, nor is it to be the richest...it is simply to be the best. Quality will do far more to propel our sport forward than quantity at this point in our evolution. Our focus for the Augusta World's will be on the three P's........ Professionalism, Production and Presentation.

The current World's model is somewhat flawed, from the perspective of a potential host community. How many cities have 6 or 8 quality courses in close proximity to each other that are worthy of hosting a World Championships? Of the few communities that do have the facilities, how many also have a club willing to to dedicate a year of preparation and a full week of time away from their work and families to run such a demanding event for nothing? Very few... maybe that is why there has been little to no interest in recent years in hosting a Pro Worlds.

Feb 02 2006, 03:21 PM
Brian,
Is the hippodrome a new course or is this going to be a temp. course. Just wondering.

Tim Keith

ck34
Feb 02 2006, 03:59 PM
I believe Pete plans to keep a regular 18 course there. But the layout for Worlds is a special extended temporary one that crisscrosses areas that aren't accessible on a daily basis.

Feb 02 2006, 04:10 PM
Is it already set up?

TK

ck34
Feb 02 2006, 04:26 PM
No. It's just been temporarily set up with portables for a day or two every so often to test the latest version of the layout. Pete's team had several holes on which to do some more clearing and prepping when I was there 3 weeks ago. I'm pretty sure they are planning at least one or two events on the proposed Worlds layout for final shakedown sometime this spring, so keep posted.

briangraham
Feb 03 2006, 11:30 AM
Tim,

The Hippodrome is a temp course located at a private equine facility overlooking downtown Augusta, however it will eventually become a permanent course following the World's. We currently have a 18 temp baskets out there but will be installing permanent baskets in the next couple of months. We've been holding some local action out there recently so we can see what improvements need to be made. The basic design and routing is set but Pete is continuing to tweak the course and make improvements based upon observations of how it is being played. We plan on hosting a non-sanctioned event out there to raise funds for the NDGC Endowment Fund sometime in the next month or two. Our goal is to have all of the improvements completed by late spring so that the World's layout can officially be ready for play at the Augusta Classic in June.

The Hippodrome will definitely be the longest and toughest World's course. It has a good elevation change, tight wooded holes and long wide open holes, which will be toughened with some OB.

Brian Graham

I am hoping to get in via the waiting list as a Master. That's why I event went looing at attendance numbers in the first place. Thanks for doing a thankless job Brian. I'm sure that it has been discussed in the past, and I believe the PDGA has a policy in place now (percentage?), but in my opinion, TDs for large events deserve to be paid for their time. Maybe a minimum stipend of $500 (which comes to only a few dollars per hour over the time spent). How about a store credit with Innova/Discraft/Gateway or even a lifetime PDGA membership?

Does the PDGA offer a cash incentive to prospective Worlds' hosts?

well if you all would read the pdga announcements thread every now and then you wouldn't have to ask the question :D

now from that thread:

Today the PDGA office sent out 1337 Am/Jr Worlds invites by email. Of these 144 bounced back = 1193 invites delivered electronically.

Within the next few days a total of 408 invites will be mailed out by the PDGA fulfillment house. These are going to 264 invited players for whom the PDGA does not have an email address on file, plus the 144 email bounce backs of earlier today. These players can expect to receive their invites in 10-21 days.

Invites for Japan and Taiwan players are being sent to their PDGA Country Representatives.

Am/Jr Worlds Registration is now open for all invited players. The options for registering include mail, fax, and on-line.

This same process will be repeated for the Pro Worlds invites around the middle of next week.

Played all 4 courses yesterday. It's a really good mix of park, woods, open, water, hills, shade, and sun.

Hippodrome is a cool course. I can't wait for it to be finalized. Will Hole 15 now play down the center of the powerlines, as opposed to the Access Road? That was the only hole I felt was tough, but maybe it's because we played it from the tee position for the potential new fairway.

Hole 18 is a bear. A grizzly bear. That 3rd shot is way challenging to get into position for a 4. Hard to visualize the basket location. Might be good to create a visual "arrow" on the fairway that points to the target from the middle of the fairway. Even a spray painted arrow would be good. It'd give you a much better idea of just how far around the corner that basket is. I completely misjudged where it was, playing it blind, but even after seeing that basket from the tee on 17 and on 1 and 2, I was about 100 feet off my line. But I really enjoyed it. Not sure how fun it will be in 4somes, with heat.

Pendleton was a great course. Another that I really liked. seems the kind of course that wouldn't change much in 30 years.

Will Hole 15 now play down the center of the powerlines, as opposed to the Access Road?

Yes...Hole 15 is being reconfigured to the center of the power easement and lengthened to make the second shot a little more challenging. The fairway will also be given some shape by O.B. rope in a manner that will give the player the choice to play safe and follow the curving fairway or take the risk/reward shot and cut across shorty.

Hole 18 is a bear. A grizzly bear.

Yes it is and you are left handed. Try playing it right handed. At 1,130 feet with OB rope on the left and heavy woods on the right, it is the most Winthrop-esque hole on the course.

Pete and I re-evaluated a few holes on Sunday and he plans on tweaking a few of them this week. The baskets arrived this morning so the course should be installed in it's Worlds layout sometime in the next week or two so that it can be played in the 16th Augusta Classic (http://members.aol.com/epicenterdg/AugustaClassicFlyer.pdf) on June 3-4.

Pendleton was a great course. Another that I really liked. seems the kind of course that wouldn't change much in 30 years

Pendleton is your prototypical old school disc golf course and will not be changed much for the Worlds. Short by todays standards, it is still one of the most enjoyable courses you will play. Hole 11 was lost to a new playground last year so a new par 4 hole is being built in the woods following hole 16 to take its place.

PDGA06Worlds.com (http://pdga06worlds.com) has been updated.

Check out the new Augusta Supercolor fundraiser discs (http://pdga06worlds.com/pdga06worlds_007.htm), available in the Spectra and Buzzz models courtesy of Discraft. This may well be one of the best looking designs ever put on a disc. It features an old Augusta golf map, watercolored in 1934 by my wife's grandfather, showing Lake Olmstead and the surrounding area. These are now available for purchase at SportDiscs.com (http://www.sportdiscs.com/fundraiserdiscs.html) with all proceeds benefitting the Pro Worlds. Don't miss out on this collectible. They are selling fast so get yours today.

http://members.aol.com/epicenterdg/AugustaSuperColor.jpg

Course maps are now available for download here (http://pdga06worlds.com/pdga06worlds_008.htm). These maps will soon be updated with hole distances, once all of the configurations have been finalized.

The DGA (Disc Golf Association) has kindly donated a 9-hole course to be raffled off to raise money for the event. Check the Pro Worlds website soon to purchase tickets.

We are currently seeking hole sponsors for the event. The cost is only $50 per hole and your name will appear on a nice custom sign posted at each hole as well as in the event program. Check here (http://pdga06worlds.com/pdga06worlds_005.htm) for details.

Augusta Magazine is doing a feature story on disc golf in next months issue. A copy will be included in the players package.

The courses are currently being prepared for the Augusta Classic (http://members.aol.com/epicenterdg/AugustaClassicFlyer.pdf) on June 3-4.
- Concrete tee pads and other improvements will be made to Lake Olmstead in the next couple of weeks.
- Chainstar baskets are currently being installed at the Hippodrome.
- Riverview will not undergo any major changes.
- A new par-4 hole is being designed and built at Pendleton King Park to replace a hole that was impacted by a new playground.

Anyone interested in volunteering their time to help staff the event is kindly asked to drop me an e-mail at [email protected]

Brian Graham

Download the 2006 Augusta Pro Worlds (Google Earth Tour) (http://pdga06worlds.com/pdga06worlds_008.htm) . The tour contains placemarks for all Pro Worlds venues as well as every hole on every course. Just download the file and start at the top of the list and click on each placemark in order. Google Earth will fly you right to that venue. If you don't have Google Earth, there is a link to download the free version of the software.

Those of you who will be coming to Augusta may want to consider competing in the HotLanta SuperTour Event on August 5-6, the weekend preceeding the Pro Worlds. This is a great way to become acclimated to the Georgia weather and you will get to play two of the Atlanta areas best courses. Primo Plastic and the Atlanta Disc Golf Organization are working hard to make this event a success. I highly recommend that you attend. Also don't forget the Georgia State Championships on August 26-27 in Toccoa.

I was just checking out the map of Lake Olmstead Park. What happens when there is a baseball game or softball game? Do you ask the right fielder if you can "play through?" :D

I was also surprised to see crossing fairways on hole#3 and hole#16.

Hole 3 tees off 20 feet above the teepad for hole 16, and throws are flat. While 16 tees slightly uphill. They really don't conflict. I would imagine that the teers on hole 16 would always get to tee first, as they are the higher hole and the drives from 3 would distract them as they whizzed overhead.

The ball field at Lake Olmstead Park is no longer used for games so it does not impact the disc golf course.

Lake Olmstead Park presented many unique design challenges due in large part to the unusual shape of the park. The tract of land is very long and narrow. The park is only about 80 feet wide in one section. I did things there design wise that I never thought I would ever do like the crossing fairways on holes 3 and 16. What you can't see on the map are the elevation changes that allow those holes to co-exist. Both holes are exceptionally beautiful so we had a hard time deciding which tee area to choose. After testing them out, we discovered that there really wasn't a conflict, so we kept both of them.

The course is laid out like a links style course with 9 holes going out and 9 holes coming back in. This layout makes for a very social round of golf as you are always crossing paths with other groups and you get to see lots of golf when you are playing. The rolling terrain and ample amounts of OB are what make the course challenging. Consistency, accuracy and control are rewarded here. The layout and beauty make for a very fun and relaxing round.

Fortunate for us, Lake Olmstead is a very underutilized inner-city park. We practically have the place to ourselves most of the time. Pat Farrell with DISConcepts will begin installing concrete tee pads out there sometime in the next two weeks.

Brian Graham

had deaf disc golf nationals there in 2004

must say - lake olmstead was my favorite course of all the ones i played in georgia during that 1 week road trip to/from deaf nationals disc golf - Augusta, Georgia

The elevation, the water, the wind (making it cooler on us in the hot scorching Georgia heat) as well as the view - we could see various players playing their holes as we played our holes

There was a dvd showcasing the Hall of Fame tournament down there but dvd didnt do Lake Olmstead justice with only with what, like 5 mins?

Limited edition commemorative black CE Aviars with a gold stamp will be available immediately after. You may contact me for your disc orders in advance. Discs from past years will also be available, so tell your friends who may need these for their collections. The Hall of Fame museum is permanently installed at the International Disc Golf Center, waiting for more exclusive display at the soon to be constructed administration building along side the Ed Headrick Museum.

I will be an official at one of the courses and roaming the scene as a Disc Golf World correspondent. I look forward to seeing you in my home state, playing at the Hotlanta DGT or at the mixed doubles event. I am looking for a partner, preferrably a Masters Woman, for that event. So I'm sitting at home trying to determine which discs to bring and which to leave at home. I'm leaving Western Colorado for a trip tomorrow which will see me visit Denver, Hawaii, Denver, Seattle, Baltimore, Boston, D.C. and finally Atlanta to drive to Augusta. I can only bring so many discs but I want them all ARRRRRRGH!

Anyway...I'm trying to keep it to 20-25. Gonna pack some in my bags for the beginnig of the trip and carry the rest on in my disc golf bag. When I hit that final leg, all the discs get to be in the carry on and I'll just figure out the clothes if they get lost. :) Gotta have those discs and I can buy a collared shirt if needed.

I know it's more than a month till most of the rest of World gets packed to go to Augusta but I'm getting packed now and am sooooo psyched! See you all there!

None of the asphalt walking trails at Pendleton King Park are out of bounds. Concrete sidewalks that parallel the parking lots (hole 1, hole 5, hole 6) are OB.

Paved walking trails and beyond are OB at Lake Olmsted Park.

Paved walking trails and beyond are OB at Riverview Park.

i for sure will be reading the boards(and asking questions on them also ;) ) but even if you move the tee location on 9 as you said, aren't you going to have to cross the walking path to reach the basket or are you moving the basket to the other side of the path also?

Questions on 9 and 11 at Lake Olmstead.

On 9, will there be a Mando spotter? We played it in teh AM, and with the sun in your eyes, it was really hard to tell if a disc that went over the mando pole actually clears it. Seems a good spot for a spotter.

I bumped into the Sauls a few holes later, who stated that 11 was going to have a long tee, making it a par 4. Am I to assume that the long tee will be back by the dock? Seems a very narrow fairway, and makes for 2 nasty lefty par 4s. Any other changes?

briangraham
Jul 11 2006, 12:13 AM
Hole 9 at Lake Olmstead will not be lengthened. The hole will be played as is, from the concrete tee pad to the original shorter position just over the hill. No Mando and no crossing the walkway. We experimented with lengthening it in the Augusta Classic and found that it was not worth the problems it could potentially cause by slowing down play. It was also difficult to determine whether your disc made the MANDO and where your disc went OB.

The tee for Hole 11 at Lake Olmstead will be backed up about 270', making the peninsula where the current tee area is, the landing zone for your first shot. It is our version of the dragon hole from the Houston Worlds. This is the only hole that will not play from the concrete pad. All other holes will be played as they are.

Pat Farrell of DISConcepts will backfill around all of the tee pads later this week. Brand new IFO tee signs and benches will be installed out there next weekend. Work days are scheduled for tomorrow and Saturday at Riverview Park.

All other divisions runneth over. but only 99 Open players. The women were allocated 20 spots and they have 25 registered! Good for them. All other divisions have filled. So where are all the OPEN PLAYERS? Worlds are a day shorter, and there's a LOT less driving once you get to town, and there's even rooms left at the tournament hotel. So where are you guys?

I know there are 19 pros that can fill those last spots. What does it say when we can't fill the open division at the world championships? Two years ago we had 154 in OPEN in Iowa, and last year we had 130 in PA. Why is the OPEN division shrinking, yet there are more players playing than ever?

Keith - check out this link from the Worlds web site for locations of 9 and 11 at Lake Olmstead (as well as all the other holes of course): http://members.aol.com/epicenterdg/LakeOlmstead.pdf

Hole 9 is just straight ahead, relatively short but out-of-sight uphill and under the tree in the middle of the rounded area (feels like a peninsula surrounded by asphalt as you walk up to the basket).

The extended tee for hole 11 is the one marked on the map - you can't avoid passing this tee even if you are going to play the shorter tee for hole 11 (which is roughly about where the line on the map appears to pass "through" a tree).

Hope this helps!

Lake Olmstead Park was hit by a very strong storm on Saturday evening with wind gusts reaching 60 mph. Trees are down all over the area but the course was not damaged too bad. The biggest casualty was a beautiful 200 year old oak tree behind Julian Smith Casino that used to sit near the 18th green. :( It got hit by lightning and is currently lying in the parking lot. Too bad as it was a great place to hang out after a round. Another large tree on the 18th green was snapped in two. Only two other large trees on the course were lost. Here is a photo of the damage.

We will get it all cleaned up before the Worlds with help from the city.

I found 2 Pete May discs whilst playing Hippodrome (on 18). I'll get them to him first time I see him.

I also spotted, but could not reach, Zack Rogers' greenish star disc, but the shule was too thick (5 feet off the fairway).

Looking forward to sweating it out in Augusta.

Speaking of sweating it out in Augusta, we played the Hippo and Riverview yesterday. The heat was alomost unbearable. I wanted to know if we would have EMTs on site at the courses for heat related injuries. I hope that there will not be any injuries, but just wanted to know.

For those of you planning on attending I would suggest hydrating in the weeks leading up to the tournament. Also just FYI, if you have ever had a heat related injury, i.e. heat exhaustion, heat stroke, you are more susceptible to a reoccurance.

Some holes would benefit from tents at the teepad, including 1, 2, 5, 8, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, and 18.

The rest have some semblance of shade.

Any chance of any more MPO spots opening up? I know several people who would still like to go to pro worlds. As far as I know this is the only Pro Worlds that has had a cap like this and a lot of people were caught off guard. Just checking to see if there is any chance for those left out.

valkyrie1
Jul 17 2006, 04:47 PM
Yeah, it does. Think of it this way. It's like drinking alcohol in the fact that you have a tolerance level. Once you have had a heat related injury your tolerance level decreases. These are some of the early signs to look for:

1. You stop sweating.
2. Cotton Mouth
3. Tingling sensation, like you skin is crawling.

Use common sense when you are out in the sun. Wear loose, light colored clothing, drink plenty of water and find as much shade as you can. Another thing to keep in check is your ego, if you are feeling any of these early effects, do something about it and let the people in your group know what you are feeling.

Plans are in place for heat relief. We have already purchased a large number of pop up tents that will be set up on tees where shade is not close by. We will also have plenty of cool water on the courses. A sports medicine doctor will address the competitors at the players meeting and offer advice and tips for coping with the heat. Emergency medical personnel will be on standby. We are also looking into getting a misting tent for the Hippodrome. Players should wear a hat. Here is a tip that will help tremendously. Bring an extra disc towel with you and keep it wet with water from the coolers. Keep this towel wrapped around the back of your neck and it will keep your body temp down. The Legends will only be playing one morning round each day and they will not be playing the Hippodrome at all.

PDGA06Worlds.com (http://pdga06worlds.com) has been updated with additional information. Visit the files page to download new course maps with distance/par charts added. There is also an overall course distances chart which also lists the hole distances in meters for our international players. An event scorecard can also be downloaded and lists every hole distance on every course. The area map has been updated with driving directions and now shows Bedford Park, site of the mini disc golf field event.

New benches and tee signs go in this weekend at Lake Olmstead. Benches are also being built for the Hippodrome.

As per the PDGA National Tour player handbook:

8.3 Dress Code

8.3.1 All players in PDGA sanctioned competitions are expected to dress appropriately and maintain a clean and well-groomed appearance at all Event sites and all associated functions.

8.3.2 The following dress code for all competitors will be enforced at all PDGA National Tour and Major Events. The PDGA also recommends that this dress code be enforced at SuperTour and lower tier events, but this decision lies solely with the Tournament Director:

All players must wear a shirt covering their upper chest area. A well-tailored shirt with a fold-down, mock turtle, v-neck, crew neck, Henley, or zippered collar, and with sleeves covering the part of the arm from the shoulder to the elbow (commonly known as the upper arm), shall be considered acceptable. Women are also allowed to wear sleeveless shirts as designated above.

No tee shirts will be allowed, except for competitors in the Junior and Amateur divisions during preliminary rounds only. Juniors and Amateurs shall not wear tee shirts during semifinal or final rounds. Crew neck or V-neck shirts made of high-performance or high-tech materials, such as Dry-Fit, Cool-Max, and others will be allowed.

Shirts that hang down lower than the bottom hemline on the player's shorts shall be tucked in.

No ripped shirts, shorts, pants will be allowed on the course. This includes unhemmed, torn or cut "vents" at the shirt collar.

No offensive, profane, or obscene slogans or logos shall be allowed on any clothing. Junior players may not wear slogans or logos referring to alcohol or tobacco.

Shoes or other foot coverings must be worn. Players will not be allowed to play in bare feet. Sandals or slides are allowed.

8.3.3 This dress code will be in effect from start to finish at each event, including all tournament rounds. Players who do not make the final cut, but wish to remain on site through the duration of the tournament, will be considered spectators and will not be required to conform to the Tour's dress code.

8.3.4 Any player in breach of the dress code will be warned for the first offense by a Tournament Official or PDGA Marshal, may be required to change attire immediately at the official's discretion, and will under all circumstances be required to change attire prior to the restart of their next round. For any additional offenses, players will be subject to disqualification by the Tournament Director, and may also be subject to suspension from PDGA events at the discretion of the PDGA Commissioner.

hiya Brian... just copy/pastin' a subject in the "rules and regulations" section of the DISCussion board... thanks for all you guys are doin' there in Augusta! :D

something we had thought about when playing Hippo a couple of weeks ago.... myself and Rob K.

Question for the rules guys:

You throw towards the basket placed on top of a hill- steep grade on one side, verticle drop off on the other into a large ditch/ revene (spelling). Basket sits about 3 ft from edge, ditch wall is about 8 ft deep on both sides, ditch floor is 5ft to 10 ft wide and maybe 80 ft long. If your disc lands in the ditch, against the far wall and there is no way to take a legal stance because of the position- do you take an unplayable lie, move to the top of the ditch on the far side and putt for your 3?
What if your disc lands on the top edge of the ditch/ cliff next to the basket. Because of soft soil and position, you can't take a legal stance (for a easy putt)- do you take an unplayable lie, go to the bottom of the ditch and putt for your difficult 3?

The Hippodrome, hole 6. Great short hole. Hopefully rules will be spelled out for the worlds. The shot from the tee is parallel to/ on top of the hill. Great course, I think it's the best in Augusta. Hole 9 could use some opening up for the second shot, otherwise, a great course. Good mix of long/ short, wide open (with OB)and tight holes. Wish the masters were playing it more than once.

IDGC Fundraiser Barbecue & Auction

The Pro Worlds will be hosting a charity barbecue dinner and silent auction in conjunction with the tournament on Friday, August 11th at the Julian Smith Casino at Lake Olmstead Park. The cost of the dinner is only $6 per person and all proceeds will benefit the International Disc Golf Center Endowment Fund. A silent auction, held in conjunction with the dinner, will give everyone the chance to bid on disc golf memorabilia and rare collectables.

The tournament organizing committee is kindly requesting that all Worlds competitors and spectators bring an item or items to donate to the auction. Nobody will miss a custom disc or two from their stack of plastic but these donations will go a long way in helping us with the development of our International Center.

PDGA members who will not be in Augusta can mail their auction donation to:

Augusta Disc Golf Association
2416 Wilkshire Drive
Augusta, GA 30904

This fundraiser is a great opportunity for the entire disc golf community to contribute to a cause that will benefit our organization and our sport far into the future. We hope that you will all support this event with your presence and donations.

Thanks for your support!

Interesting.

They've added 12 players to Pro Worlds, so there'll be a ghost group in every pool.

What do you think the maximum number of ghost groups could be at a big event?

I'm thinking, if you were crazy, you could do 6 ghost groups, spread out 3 holes apart. Keep pop up tents and chairs or mats under each to keep players comfortable while they wait. How much longer do you think the rounds would take this way?

Just pondering.

When they originally posted the waiting list when the worlds was said to be full, here is what the PDGA posted.

The following players have now begun the Pro Worlds "Paid Waitlist." They will be contacted and advised if and when someone withdraws from the divisions/pools in question, opening up a spot for them:

MPO
1. Tim Townsend
2. Geoff Bennett
3. George Smith
4. Nikko Locastro
5. Michael Johansen

MPG
1. Jack Fouts
2. HB Clark
3. Gary Burdick

So who the other 7 are in open is a mystery to me. Also there is an 8th since Schweb can't go.

briangraham
Jul 24 2006, 11:41 AM
The final decision to expand the field of the Worlds via one ghost group per pool was made by myself and Pete May. We carefully weighed all of the positives and negatives before reaching this decision. The names of the people on the wait list had absolutely no bearing on our decision. I am more than willing to accept the consequences, whatever they may be. This is all I have to say on the matter and I will not be debating it on the Discussion board. Thanks in advance for your understanding.

New IFO tee signs went in at Lake Olmstead this weekend along with several foot bridges and a few trees. Most all of the damage from last weeks strong storm has been cleaned up. Benches will be installed this week at Lake Olmstead, the Hippodrome and Riverview Park.

Please don't forget to bring an item or items to donate to the silent auction to benefit the International Disc Golf Center.

Brian, I have a question about Hippo. I looked at the course map and noticed that on 13 fairway there are 2 dots and an "M". I would guess to say that the tower in the fairway is going to have a Mando. Is that correct? If so, how will the Mando play?

cwphish
Jul 27 2006, 01:33 PM
It was not played as a mando for the Augusta Classic.

briangraham
Jul 27 2006, 03:25 PM
Yes...Pete decided to make the far left power pole a Mando after seeing several players attempt to throw inside the poles and high over basket 10 in the Augusta Classic. (safety issue)

Players who have played Pendleton King Park in years past should take notice that the course layout has changed somewhat and some of the holes are re-numbered and now played in a different order. This fact is noted on the grounds rules so that players do not get stroked for playing the holes in the incorrect order.

BG

xterramatt
Jul 27 2006, 05:22 PM
Sorry Brian, that was a little unclear.

Are you saying that IF someone plays the course in the wrong order they will NOT be stroked since it has recently been reordered, or does that mean that the ground rules are now up so people are more aware of it, and will not play it in the wrong order and be stroked?

Situation A: Playing it and shooting 14-17 in their original order. Stroked? or not? since the old version was 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 and the new version is 13, 17, 16, 14, 15, NEW 18.

Situation B: What if you start on a hole you thought was 15? 3 more groups start on holes 14, 16, and 17 (all wrong). Are all of these groups stroked? It could happen. Just want to clarify. Heading down this weekend to play a few more rounds.

MTL21676
Jul 27 2006, 05:26 PM
i think he is saying that it will be marked clear so people who have played the course will not play in the incorrect order, therefore, sense they are playing it correctly, will no be stroked.

It will be the responsbility of the players to play the holes in the proper order or they will be stroked as per PDGA rules. I sincerely hope that it will not be an issue and that is why I brought it up here. Because the park will not allow us to install tee signs, we stenciled the back of every tee pad with the hole number and the distance. In effect, the tee pad is also the tee sign.

ok i can understand the park not allowing permanent tee signs.....
BUT can't you have temp tee signs like you have for hippodrome??

i will volunteer to set them up and take them down each day if necessary....
it makes it alot easier to find your way around with at least temp tee signs(that also have distances)....

you have to remember that the MAJORITY of the field have never even seen the course....so helping to keep the "locals" from playing out of order the day ofthe round won't help the rest of the field that didn't kow the order to begin with :p

Courses are looking sharp! Teepads at the Lake are back and front and side-filled. Very nice. Tee signs look great. What was the reason for moving the basket on hole 8? It's now just out of birdie range, and I agree, if you hit wood early, it's a tough 3, but it's also not a 2 anymore, unless you get a crazy roll or skip. I can live with it. I don't mind the new par 4 along the water. As long as I play smart, it's a good strategy hole. Saw a lot of righties having trouble with it. Hole 16 new pin I like. Is there a larger gap on the left now? Seems a lot more open for a lefty hyzer. Hole 17 is looking 300% better. Grass on the "road" and weedwhacked area down by the water.

Hippodrome is really looking great. I like the new tee on 1. And the shrubs are a really nice touch. They seem to say "we want to be a permanent course!" Benches are nice. the few tweaks are also nice. One question, is that tree supposed to be there on hole 14's gap to the green? The horizontal one?

PK is also looking nice. I was thrown off by the reshuffle last time, but I agree that it flows nicely now. Also like the new pin on hole.... 10, 11? the long one. Good long hole now.

The rains held off all day and got 3 rounds in at aforementioned courses with the Sauls. Those guys have probably gotten the most rounds in of anyone practicing.

Had my best rounds on all 3 courses. Under par on all.

Matt, glad to hear you NOW approve of the pads at Lake Olmstead! Many hours of work has been done by DISConcepts, Brian G, Matt G, Scott O, and Team Augusta. I will be back down in Augusta starting Monday to work on the tee pads at the Hippo…. Yes, a permanent course here would be a great addition to the area. I did have the chance to play a quick electric golf cart round with Pete M last Thursday. We played 14 or so holes (random grab from a box of 50 or so primo discs Pete had in the Cart) I had 6 birdies and 1 bogie (#18) for a pretty decent score. The Hippodrome will be the course that will make or break many aspiring 06’ world champions. Do you have what it takes to be the best?
I’m not sure what the official plan is for touring the IDGC site at Wildwood Park, but I would be more than happy to show some people around this unbelievable new course site during the week. You will find me at Lake Olmstead most of the week watching the action! Look for the Silver Van!

The story on the tournament is... come out and get the story during the tournament! Maybe a daily Associated Press type news brief can be sent out to the local papers to give them something to report daily? The great thing is, daily scores can be in the next morning's newspapers, perhaps with a synopsis and a photo, which would attract people to come out and watch.

I guess having the next day's schedule in there too would help...

I just saw that there was a tropical storm in the Atlantic. It's name is Chris. Who knows where it will ultimately go. However, after reading this thread, I now know that I won't be able to bet on Chris' path at the casino in Augusta.

I hope it stays away, due to the general nuisances of high winds and torrential rain on my game. In Texas, Himing seems to have special powers to keep things dry. If the storm is heading Augusta's way, the PDGA needs to ship Himing to Augusta for the battle of the Chrises. Problem is, I won't be able to bet on that battle either.

Well isn't this a great way to countdown to Worlds. A trip to the ER.

I'm relaxing at home while a couple of my wife's EIGHT dogs get to chill out when there's a fight. This STUPID BORDER COLLIE named Vengeance, a dog that was given to my wife because, basically, the person had too many dogs (AND WE DON'T??????) that is neurotic was just laying there and snapped and attacked our totally sweet Border/Staffy Jack. When I went to pull them apart Vengeance bit my finger, and when I finally ripped the two dogs apart and was throwing her into her crate she bit a finger on my OTHER hand.

I flung a lot of stuff and did a whole lot of screaming. My left index finger got it the worst. A ripped cuticle down the side of my finger on the middle finger side, and a deep puncture in the pad of the same finger. I'm left handed. Wonderful. A week before Worlds.

My other hand is not bad at all, but it's a pair of gashes up both sides near the cuticle.

So the big question is, can I play at Worlds in a week? I sure hope so. I'm not too optimistic though.

Man am I #$*&$!. That dog is so out of here. I think I'll be able to leverage this into a SIX dog household by the end of the month. I am sick of dog fights, and did I mention that my wife left for the beach today? So now I have to deal with this stupid dog for the rest of the week. I think I will be dropping several of the dogs at my neighbor to deal with them. I simply can't deal with this dog for the rest of the week. Of coourse this happens during the month that I have been looking forward to the big tournaments, Worlds and MSDGC.

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They have some great bars and restaurants with some great selections of tap and bottled beers, at yesteryears prices!

Wow, that was salesmanny, I better remove my suit and 4 inch wide polyester tie now. The Pizza Joint has great food and a BUNCH of good beers on tap and bottle, most every microbrew there is $3-4. Stillwater has a ton of tap beers and ciders, I want to say up to 20 taps, maybe more, great old time saloon feel, right down to the bluegrass band on certain nights.

There are a bunch of other places on Broad that serve respectable menus and beverages and nightlife. It's an unusually cool hopping place.

Howdy howdy, can somebody please give me some quick insight as to the stroller-friendliness of the courses, from best to worst? I'll be bringing my daughter along for a couple of practice rounds and don't want to encounter a rope bridge spanning a 300' ravine... :D

Aug 04 2006, 10:48 AM
In descending order of challenge: PK: mostly flat, mowed grass and easiest to get around. The rest have several holes with pretty good elevation. LO is mostly nice grass and shouldn't be too hard to get around. Toss up between RV and Hippo. Each have a few rougher spots but I can't think of any impassable areas, just some rough areas.

Chuck,

Do you have estimated SSA's for the four courses yet? It will help give me an idea of where the cash line will be for the various divisions.

PackerFan,

As a father with small children myself, I would suggest the following..

Pendelton King is probably the most stroller friendly park. Mostly small hills with only 1 or two "bad" spots over by the pond hole.

Lake Olmstead is not too bad either. Elevation changes are there, but they are not that bad to negotiate.

I have not been to the Hippodrome yet so someone else will have to answer that one for you.

Riverview has a few holes that are OK for a stroller, but for the most part I would stay away from this course if you plan on pushing a stroller. However, this is one course you really have to walk or play before you are in tournament play. Do not play this course blind!!

Hope that helps.

Later,

Mike D

My opinions about stroller-friendliness:

Hippodrome should be doable with a jogging stroller. You'll have to wrestle the stroller across some rough soft ground getting to hole 9, but otherwise it would be pretty playable with a stroller. (There's usually an easy and obvious way to get a stroller around the hilly bits.) Hippodrome is not for the faint of heart, but at least with the stroller you can bring plenty of extra water along!

IMHO, you can can tackle Riverview with a jogging stroller also, except for holes 2 and 3. No rope bridges but there are some streams with wooden bridges and in at least one case, no bridge at all, and some tight hilly paths that will pose some challenges getting through 6 and 7, and down hole 10. But doable, if you are patient!

I think PK is safely at a 49 now. I imagine the scoring average on hole 18 in the Pro Open division will be greater than 3. A birdie is lucky on that hole, and for every birdie I believe there will be 2 rolls to the bottom of the hill, causing more 4s than 2s.

Thanks Chuck, Mike and Vanessa! I appreciate your advice, and hopefully we can save RV for Tuesday afternoon, when our sitter will be joining us- but I won't sweat it if we have to play all the courses with the baby, it doesn't sound any worse than what we're used to. Yes we have a jogging stroller, and no we are not faint of heart! :D Thanks again, see y'all next week!

They are done but I'm not sure who will post them. It sounded like later this afternoon was the timing but the message didn't say specifically. Open players are in either A or B pool :) Hole assignments are not being made in advance any more so TDs can adjust them at the courses based on last minute withdrawls or other issues. So, you check your board at the course each round to confirm your hole.

How are they going to run the field events on Tuesday? I was planning to just show up at L.O. around 2:30pm for the Skillshot and Putting, but I heard a rumor that we have to be there when it starts (10am) and they will assign us a time to compete in each event.

I have a reservation at the host hotel starting Monday, but my roomie arrived early and said the hotel is in a rotten area of town.

1. Any truth to this? How should it affect cars in the parking lot?

2. Anybody looking to stay at the host hotel, in case my roomie decides to bail? Email me right away if interested (dave*dnesbitt_dot_com)

It got a little wild around the host hotel on Friday night due to a large street festival, which takes place every first Friday. Downtown should be back to normal now that it is over so no worries about the host hotel.

Field events run from 10:00am to 4:00pm on Tuesday. Just show up at the host venue anytime in this time period to compete. This flex schedule should allow plenty of time for a practice round or two.

Congratulations to Jay and Des Reading, who birdied the last hole at Lake Olmstead to win the Mixed Doubles World Championships. Photos of the event can be found at http://www.pdga.com/images/06proworlds/index.html

Competitors were treated to a sweet players package today at check-in, which included 4 golf discs, a mini driver, an embroidered golf shirt, caramel popcorn, a sample of Dry Hands, food coupons and other goodies.

The media was out in full force today with several television camera crews and reporters doing stories. These articles appeared in the Augusta Chronicle on Sunday:

Players meeting tomorrow night at the Julian Smith Casino at Lake Olmstead Park at 8:00pm, where Augusta mayor, Deke Copenhaver, will welcome the players.

Stay tuned for updates and plenty more photos courtesy of the PDGA and the 2006 Pro Worlds.
