I thought since Discette frequents this part of the board we should have a direct line to ask her questions about the SoCal organization. I'll go first.

Why does the website state-"Evergreen entries updated daily!"-when it has never even been updated?

Why can't you get the results of the Scott Killian Memorial from Wil and give them to someone who is willing to post them?

And this is from the "How to use this site" link-"Welcome to the Southern California Disc Golf Association's web site. My philosophy in design for this website is to present as much pertinent information as possible in the fastest and easiest to access format"-...Is this still the same philosophy?

I don't want to start a bash the SoCal Organization thread, I'm just asking. http://jm.g.free.fr/smileys/smiley_abzw.gif

Dave -

Two of these questions are about the website. While I am adept at navigating the interenet, and have skills to make posts on message boards such as this one, Front Page is still a part of my newspaper.

Evergreen Open Entries: Our wonderful webmaster and So Cal Board member, Tom LaTorre, is in charge of the So Cal website. I have passed your question onto him. I will post his response when I recieve it.

Scott Killian results: I have already explained this to you in the private emails we exchanged. For everyone else:
TD's have 30 days to provide event results to the PDGA, and So Cal currently has no rules or guidelines regarding how quickly results need to be submitted. I have sent requests to the TD to provide the results in absolutely any format he chooses, so that we may get these on the website. We also need results to be able to compute those all important So Cal Points for the Series.

Website Design: The website has a great format, and there is no reason to change it. It IS the quickest way to get information to members with internet access. I think Tom is doing an outstanding job. If you, or anyone else is interested in helping Tom, please contact him at: Tom_La_Torre@socaldiscgolf.org He welcomes any and all help, and would surely welcome a little thanks for all the time and effort he puts into it.

I hope this answers your questions.

What's the real story behind this?

Matt was registered to play in the Hall of Fame Classic this weekend in Augusta. He had to withdraw from the event because he had to get shrapnel, that is, a BB surgically removed from his finger. It had been there for almost 20 years. Mattt was kind enough to give me the complete story.

Here is Matt's explanation:

I was 13 or 14. I had a beebee gun. I was in the yard, shooting some stuff off a post, I had loaded about 10 beebees in the gun and pumped it about 30 times. Just as I was aiming it, my mom pulls down the driveway. I wasn't supposed to have a beebee gun, nor did she know about it, so I threw it in some dirt and went to say hi.... Later, I went back to get the gun, I put the safety on and was wiping it down, but I forgot to discharge it. All the beebees fell out except 1, since there's a little magnet at the back to hold a single round. As I was wiping it off it went off. straight into my finger. ouch. OUCH!

I frantically went inside and stuck my finger in the coldest water I could find... the toilet. I took the shoelace that I hung a key on my neck and tied a tourniquet on my finger. It started swelling up. After that, I lose recollection, until I remember that it had healed and the swelling went down and I realized there was a huge lump under there. With all the swelling I hadn't noticed the beebee was still in my finger. It stayed there for many years, I could show it to people by shining a flashlight on the back of my hand. It was also good to gross people out, I could push it left or right about a half centimeter.

I think it got infected because I've been using a chainsaw a lot lately and I probably agitated it enough that my body finally recognized it as a foreign object. That, or I got a shot of pennicillin a couple weeks ago for a sinus infection and it started attacking the beebee too....

They cut it out yesterday afternoon, but didn't sew up the incision, so now I have a hole in my hand... oozing pus.

You said you wanted details!

Matt's X-ray (http://www.xterrier.com/bbxray.jpg)

Now I have a follow up question for Matt. Did your mom ever find out about the BB gun or this incident?

1. Rhett is still providing value to all those that sponsored his event. Doesn't it make you feel special that the event you helped sponsor is still being advertised long after the event has ended? How many other TD's would do that for you?

2. You can always get hugs from me. I don't think Rhett will get jealous that you didn't give him hugs when he ran So Cal.

If you could help out and send the pre-registration list to Tom La Torre, that would be greatly appreciated. You could use the PDGA Tour Report (http://www.pdga.com/documents/td/05TDReportElectronicV5-3-1.xls).

Maybe you could offer to input the final scores as well.

Dear Discette,

...what's a reasonable 'target' date for Wrightwood, to get an event in THIS series? That is, how late could they wait to commit, and still pull it off? :)

discette
May 09 2005, 10:54 AM
Steve,

I suppose an event on the mountain could happen up until the end of September. I hesitate to put another date on the schedule without any guarantee there will even be a course.

Looking at the schedule, Pro Worlds fills the last weekends in July and Am Worlds the first two in August. Next up is the Summertime Open, then Labor Day Weekend and US Masters. Then "Yours Truly" is going to the Women's Championships. This pretty much leaves the weekend of August 20 & 21 as the only weekend I would be available to TD this event.

So, if the PDGA agreement needs to be in at least 30 days in advance for a C tier event, the latest we could wait to hear if a course will be installed and still have an event would be July 21st.

All of this would assume that new owners would allow an event this weekend, and that there is no other major event on the mountain that weekend.

Suzette

Wow, you have lots 'on the docket'! But if you didn't have the TD concern, couldn't that 'red letter' date move back, a bit?

discette
May 10 2005, 03:00 PM
That question would imply that there is another TD out there who may willing to run this event. If that was the case, sure, I suppose the event could be later.

Tom Bandt has already offered to help run the event with me, but no one has actually mentioned wanting to run the event. So as long as I am invloved as the TD or Co TD, September is not an option.

My vote for the person with the Best attitude I have had the rare pleasure to play Disc Golf with is .....................

TREY.....................sorry Dave , you do have a excellent attitude and stay calm and relaxed in intense play situations.

I have never seen you Blow up. That's a real good thing and will carry you through the next levels of this sport.

However , Trey is always cool , always.................
Always smiling and never hateful..........................

I'm serious , alot of players , PRO's especially PRO's , can learn from him.

I hope I have the honor to play with him again.
He has helped me to understand , being cool is the best way!!
I forget that from time to time. Part of old age I guess.

I can't give you that Title.
I can help you though with different parts of your game and how to win if you want ?

Sometimes it does get wild when I play outside my game.
You have to know the ins and outs of different situations.

So , when you go to the World's , don't try and over analize everything. Just flow within your game. Have fun playing with the knowledge you have of your discs.

Thanks Suzette . That was absolutely corrrect. You never mentioned anything , except who HYZERACE was. Period.

She never mentioned it on the board, but at the GSC she mentioned that you had "proof" that I sent you a virus. She also said you accused me of attempting to crash the SoCal site So I hope you're still kidding, because I'd like to think you are a sane person.

Do you know if there is some sort of club/support group for people who accidently shot themselves in the finger w/ a bb gun at the age of 13/14 after almost being discovered by their parents while filling the barrel full of bb's and pumping up the gun about thirty times, then dumping out the barrel to avoid discovery and coming back later to a nasty surprise?

I think your ratings progression is impressive: 52 points in one year. I hope you can increase another 52 this coming year and become the 1000 rated player you are.

I generally read the message board after I get settled in at work. However, I also respond at other times. (Note: this post was made at 8:54am.)

The contrast is much like past comparisons between the Lakers and the Clippers. Amazing what can happen in one year.

I had no idea this would catch on. Thank you for starting yet another useless thread and providing me with a way to increase my post count. Soon, this thread will be flaming. Now, I really feel like someone special.....ooooh, the new phone book is here, the new phone book is here!

I agree that we don't disagree on much ~ in fact, I think during the actual conversations we've had, there's one major pdga rule we DO agree on! :D But we won't mention which one it is, will we? ;) Keep Vincent wondering.

I agree that this year YOU are the better golfer and higher rated one. My hay day was from 1990 to 1999. Then I moved to LA where I can't get to any courses before sundown without a helicopter. So yeah, this year I suck. (I thought I would be joining the 700 club, actually!) Now I just play for fun and to par-taaaaaaaay with friends and roadtrips to get out of town. The Summertime Open is not actually a "confirmed" event at this point in time as the course is in the process of being renovated. A date was reserved for the event in hopes the course would be ready in time. I will keep you posted.

of course this does not apply in SO(we are pros so we'll just show up to pay at the beginning of the event)CAL

Matt -

While Pimp may have a higher post count than you, I think the fact that you are rated 32 points higher than Pimp puts the odds on your side. Disc-claimer: Ratings reflect how well you should perform on paper, and we all know Des Moines courses are made of grass and trees.

I sincerely hope, as do many message board regulars, that you can beat Big Pimp in Des Moines. This will hopefully dispell his mistaken notion that you are only winning all those events in Texas because you lack compettion. Unfortunately, I doubt a victory by you will put an end to his endless smack talking, "you don't know me in real life", "I came in first in an A tier event posts".

P.S. Be sure to bring your accuracy game, a good lefty shot, and your Ivy Block.

Some artwork has been recieved, and So Cal is still seeking unique artwork with a So Cal theme for our INNColor discs. Please feel free to submit any and all original designs. Dave -

I don't think the part about the World Championship is true. If you play as the 1000 rated player you are in your dreams, you should have no problem winning the title in Arizona this summer. If you do not win the Am Championships this year, you have plenty of chances over the next 50 years to win a Professional title. Perhaps you can win the Pro Grandmasters World Title in 2037.

As for Karma, you know that is true. However, I wasn't aware that you had a little dog too!

In that case, it will be a while. The permit for the Golden State Classic which happened two weeks ago has not even been nailed down yet.

I am still jumping through hoops trying to get the permit details for the So Cal Championships in November. I can't believe they want to charge us $3,294 for the permit. This is one reason So Cal payouts are not that great. Imagine if $3,200 could be added to the purse instead of taken away.

Do any other tournaments in the US have to pay this kind of fee to use a park?

Wow, that really seems exorbiant.

I wonder what Whittier is looking for these days...there's that large area North of the 'regular' course [and the Freeway] [also West of Santa Anita blvd] where U.S. Masters was in 2002. Even with extra 'security', might that be less?

rhett
May 27 2005, 03:31 PM
I had to pay $676 for last year's SoCal Champs, which was approximately double from the year before.

Maybe shooting for $750 in your negotiations wouldn't be so bad. Seems pretty high, but what the heck.

Maybe Whittier is becoming a viable alternative again. 2002 U.S. Masters ended up costing something like $1350 for the permit. Sounds like a bargain compared to the quote you're getting for LaMa!

Matt -

While Pimp may have a higher post count than you, I think the fact that you are rated 32 points higher than Pimp puts the odds on your side. Disc-claimer: Ratings reflect how well you should perform on paper, and we all know Des Moines courses are made of grass and trees.

I sincerely hope, as do many message board regulars, that you beat can beat Big Pimp in Des Moines. This will hopefully dispell his mistaken notion that you are only winning all those events in Texas because you lack compettion. Unfortunately, I doubt a victory by you will put an end to his endless smack talking, you don't know me in real life, I came in first in an A tier event posts.

P.S. Be sure to bring your accuracy game, a good lefty shot, and your Ivy Block.

You are one good negotiator. :) Maybe we should concentrate on getting you a job at the LA County Parks Department. :D

In all seriousness now, what kind of feel do you get from them? Do they seriously think they are being reasonable, or do you think they are just jerking you around to get rid of disc golf? Those kinds of increases seem like they just want us to be gone.

The feeling I get is there is a lot of red tape and that the people at the parks department don't communicate well with each other.

The first bid came from the Parks coordinator. He seemed really excited to have the three disc golf events at La Mirada this year. The second bid came from the person that actually issues the permits. The fees are based on cost per acre and the disc golf course covers a lot of acres. The third bid included use of Softball field #4 for a Frisbee Dog event. Since seeing the cost of the new permit for the dogs, this event has decided to meet in Scottsdale. So now I will try to get a Co-sponsorship agreement with the parks so they will waive some of the fees.

I am trying to get the permit to be based on the number of players, which is a more reasonable approach. However, it appears that the words reasonable and LA County Parks do not go well together.

Hey Rhett , Suzette is doing a great job.
I think the City is milking the deal. Typical government ya know. Who else is going to pay those exorbant increases?
They should be sponsoring the tournament.
Do we have to petition the council or something ?
We don't cause any damage to property and pick up our trash.

I have been trying to write a proposal to our Governator , in hopes to have more available space for Disc Golf Courses in Kalifornia. I said I could meet with him , suit and tie , have one of my portable baskets available for his constituants to putt on !!! Can you amagine Arnold Putting.

Without it , especially in California , public land space will be few and far between. Condos , strip malls , retail outlets will take over because of demand. More and more people are living here , despite the cost of living.

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Hey Discette - Back from Wrightwood.

The weather up there today was Excellent !!!!!!!!

A little snow at Mountain High's top , but nothing to write home about. Weather was Awesome though !!!!!!!!

Bright Sunshine at about 65-67 degrees !!!!!!
Not a cloud in the Sky !!!!!!!

Absolutely Beautiful !!!!!!! Clean Crisp Air !!!!!!! WOW !!!!!

Route 2 West to La Canada is still closed .
Something about trees down or something.
Ski Sunrise signs say Closed.

No baskets at either Mountain High or Ski Sunrise.

I did find a course though , by accident , at the Wrightwood Country Club. Members only , sign says.

Saw at least 12 permanent baskets , set up with tee signs !!!!!
May have 18 holes there. Looked like a mini Wrightwood course with lots of trees and elevation changes !!!!!!!!

Just wondering if you have heard about this course or played it ? News to me. Looks like Kiwanis Club or something.

Baskets look to be homemade , or Mach I type.

Just and FYI..........thanks again for your time !!!!!

It would appear you have found a website like this (http://www.fibersource.com/f-info/question-archive.htm).

To answer your question: The #2 on the pencil refers to the hardness of the lead, rather than the popularity of the pencil. The higher the number, the harder the lead. (Even though pencils do not actually contain lead.) View pencil facts here. (http://pubs.acs.org/cen/whatstuff/stuff/7942sci4.html)

When will I get a the opportunity to play with a girl, such as yourself?

Dave -

To play with me during a tournament round you will need to go Pro, turn 40 years old AND get that sex change operation you have been putting off.

Otherwise, La Mirada is my home course. Whenever you plan on playing La Mirada, just send me a PM.

Um, my name is Ryan. And that sounds great, maybe next weekend?

Discette, are you riding your bicycle more, or riding less now that you've changed locales and jobs and substituted the Frozen Tundra for the Concrete Jungle??

La Mirada is a fun course to play.

Been through my fair share of operations last year.
Got the 40 thing down. I will pass on the change thing though. I still look 8 months pregnant though  Working on that this year. :D

See you sometime at La Mirada !!!! :D

D'oh. Sorry, Ryan. It's too late for me to edit the post because you quoted me.

I don't know if I can play this weekend. My daughter's birthday is Saturday. She may have friends overnight.

Steve -

I ride my bike lots more here in California than I did when I lived in the Midwest. I used to be a "roadie" and I even went on RAGBRAI a few times.

Now I am a mountain biker. That is, I actually ride a mountain bike up and down mountains, as opposed to riding a mountain bike on a single track. I ride a lot more here mostly because I can ride year round. In the winter I ride in the foothills and in the summer the higher you go, the cooler it gets. I am amazed at how few people I see on the bike trails. It is hard to believe there are millions of people living within minutes of the mountains, but so few actually use the trails.

I love living in Southern California. I have the choice of going to the beach or the mountains. I also love the mild temperatures. I have lived in the extremes. Minnesota had very cold, snowy winters and Tucson, AZ was very hot!! The Midwest can also be very hot and humid in the summer, while Tucson is just plain HOT! Here the temperature is nice and mild, day and night, winter or summer.

I've heard of The Tour of the Ohio River Valley, or something like that, but not Ragbrai. I still want to do a 'Century', eventually.

The only thing I'd add to your post is the OCTA, and Riverside Bus systems [and others?] allow "Piggybacking"....that's real convenient; lets one skip the bikerack/parking finagalage altogether. ;)

Anyway, I'm sure it was just a Freudian slip...we all know what you're thinking about ;) BTW I would never consider getting a sex change....Have you seen my ROOSTER (http://www.roadchix.com/03-journeys/photos/tennessee/rooster.jpg)? /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Did you leave it on the side of the road in Tennessee ?
Do I detect some Fromunda Cheese near the base ?

It is really of no interest to me, just trying to imagine how difficult it would be to be in SoCal after having left your Rhode Island Red in Tennessee.

Hey StrinGay,

It obvious that you are interested or you would not have replied. While I appreciate your genuine concern for my rooster, rest assured, he is straight. As far as your penchant for Fromunda cheese (http://www.wackybargains.com/fromunda.gif) is concerned, I can't help you there, but you might want to contact the BIG GUY. Keith -

Yes, I can send one to you. I have also asked the So Cal webmaster to put a version on our website that people can read.

I can view the flyer and I have never paid for any version of Adobe. You are not the first person to say they were unable to view the flyer. I am not tech savvy so I do not understand why folks are unable to open and read this flyer.
Can any of you techie guys explain why?
