WHEN IS IT THIS YEAR

Most of the time at the ridge it's first week of November sometimes as early as the last week of October according to how much rain or how cool it is, but it's highly variable. Hard to predict peak colors accurately.......... ;) /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif :D Oh you're probably talking about the Disc Roast - October 27-29.:cool:

riverdog
Oct 08 2006, 08:30 PM
James "Squirrel" Wallace, Stack, Senator Glenn and I were out sawing and climbing and dragging on #18 and #13 this morning and early afternoon. You'll be happy to know that #18's fairway gap has been restored to it's former tight but not impossible size. Looks good. Now to talk to the park folks about a load of chips this week to stabilize all the pad work that has been done.

Only a couple or three more before time change. Come on out. We'll try to get some of us started at 4:30 - 4:45 to try to get in before dark thirty.

It's a little to far for the Wed. dubs, but maybe I'll try for the sunday doubles in the next week or 3, still start @ 1? I need to get some practice before the Mighty YO!

You sandhillers have no reason to wait on the colors, just drive an hour up the rocky hillside to Jefferson or Virginia to see the fall foilage in full blaze. Red, orange, yellow, brown and green all mixed in a see of beauty along the Blue Ridge. I do enjoy livin up in them hills. :)

Sorry Senator Glenn, I wont be able to attend the disc roast unless a miracle happens between now and then.

Isn't it about time to start hyping up the Yaddie Open?

I'm stoked about it! :) Hoping to pull a few players off the mountain with me. Is there camping available?

riverdog
Oct 12 2006, 11:37 AM
Man, are you on top of it or what. Just exchanged mail with the TD yesterday getting info to do just that on the PDGA tournie heading. Hopefully I'll get a few minutes to post this afternoon. If not, it'll be tonight.

Met one of your locals at the Y'ville course Tuesday. Actually "re-met". I'm horrible with names - retired law enforcement, shaved head, has played over a hundred courses all over creation, has been helping y'all out in West Jeff apparently, played the YO last year.......... Good guy. Was playing with a retired firefighter from Boone area.

No camping at the park. Camping at the ridge is cool. I'll post other accomodation stuff on the tournie thread when I get that done.

That nice guy is Mel Jone's! He is quite a character, loves disc golf just as much as anyone can. He forked out $700 bucks sponsoring hole's 1 and 18 at Ashe Park, and he's moving away. :( Now, that is a nice guy! :)

Count me in at Camp Cat, as long as the weather cooperates.

Looking forward to it!

.......at least before daylight savings means only those able to get there by three p.m. need apply. We will try to get going by four with at least a group, but come on when you can. Frannie allows that her pizza delivery service will run in time for a peri-dark, post round meal. BS, Booney, if y'all are headed to Y'ville this week come up early tomorrow, play the park then come back by the house for the late afternoon Ramcat round.

Still have no idea what my plans are for tomorrow. I like your idea though! Although, Wendy probably won't. If I only get one choice, it's going to have to be Yadkinville because it's been awhile and it would be humiliating to get beat by BS's righty side arm tricks. :D

It's looks as though a strong cold front from the mountains is coming your way tomorrow. Better defined as "my game". ETA at Yaddie Park about high noonish. From there, Wendy and I have to find and buy a new mattress, and if we get done in time, I think we may swing by Ramcat for the final round of the season. That's if all goes well. Hope to see you all at either one of the Yadkinville courses tomorrow!

Oct 25 2006, 08:56 AM
Hope we find you one place or the other. I still haven't got my stuff together for DR. Been one of those weeks where the phone is ringing as you walk in the door from a ten hour day and back you go for another couple of hours. Really you wouldn't have to pack any more if you were going for three weeks instead of three days. Anyway, if it's near noon before I get away from the clinic, I'll run by the park and holler at you. If earlier I'm headed mi casa to pack, or actually more accurately to throw stuff at the truck. If y'all are running late on the mattress patrol, stop by anyway and catch the ridge top holes and have some pizza.

bapster
Oct 25 2006, 09:45 AM
You don't need to pack for DR. Just a sleeping bag and some I mean lots of brew and treats. See ya Friday. And maybe some shelter but that is optional. Are you playn the golf and dubs friday?

riverdog

Yup, you are right on that really - brew, treats, and I'm sleeping in the back of the truck - shoot I'm good to go. Playing disc on Friday, but not the ball golf challenge. First Sunday Singles coming up at Ramcat this Sunday 2 Dec at 2:00 p.m. Sunday Ace Pool is pushing $400 and should be over that with this weeks entries. BTW Big Air had an ace run on #3 yesterday afternoon with a beautiful Roc shot. Just one of many ace runs to be had at "de 'cat". ;) /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Note to Mt.Todd (or should that be MTT)- for the above reason and others I will once again bail out on the West Jeff trip Saturday. :oGot a down maple to chainsaw out of a trail between #6 and #7 plus a large maple that is encroaching on #6 fairway that may need to get gone.

Small group but some Wednesday afternoon magic on the ridge. Played doubles, pairings were Bryant/Stack-Stank, Ben/me, Eddie/Cali. Everyone finished par or better with Ben and me at 49, Big Air and Stack at 52 and Eddie at even par. Did I mention that Bryant aced 14 in the tree position? It was GREAT with three pinball kisses and into the basket. Hit the right trunk hard and into the left trunk and back into the right trunk and into the basket. Pretty cool. Definitely time to move it back to the ledge position. :D

Enjoyed seeing Stank's fledgling course. He's got five baskets of nine hung with fairways left to be cut on the other four of the first nine. Great, great piece of property with lots of elevation and a substantial creek that will figure into at least two holes. Gonna be fun seeing it evolve.

Like you said before, the BcS is a joke.

I'm not a huge fan, but do believe App State has a pretty darn good football program. They did win the Div. I National Championship last year, and have another good chance at it again this year. They haven't lost at home in 4 yrs.!

Tickled to death to be here my friend, after twelve hours of transit time from Georgia today. Three of those hours were very enjoyable, playing the Steady Ed Memorial Course at the IDGC in Pollards Corner Georgia with Mike Doyle of North Augusta, SC. Plays a bit like Buckhorn with a couple of hits of anabolic steroids. Killer course. 7000'+ of woods and water. Lots-o-fun!!!!!!

Then there was the two hours going seven miles where a tractor trailer jackknifed a few miles east of the Savannah River. Not-so-fun!!!!!!!!!!!

OK, New Years Day. Ramcat, Bloody's (Virgin Bloody's for the Nancies) and disc golf. Shoot for elevenish. Give us a holler if you're on the way.:cool::cool:

And Wednesday Ramcat at 2:30 is cool. Got some catching up to do at work but I'll be home by then. Manana.

Dec 27 2006, 12:29 PM

Yup, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Still rough and would be difficult to navigate without a guide, but once it beats in oooooooooeee..... First off, welcome back Brent! FYI, I know a lawyer that is more than willing to help you sue for pain and suffering.

Second, I said that when I played it I was dissapointed that after several years, that is all the progress they made. Apparently since my opinion was known, progress has been made according to my inner snitch within the governing body. You can also factor in that i am in the QC region, and we get stuff done with rightful intent and expediency. We have higher standards here. But think about it, we got the Web, which is substantially longer done in a few months, without army corps or power equipment. Speaks volumes.

Lastly, sorry to here that Buckwheat dumped you, especially around the holidays. Did you find your new armpit monster in AZ? How bout the call-girl from Tejas?

RD, was thinking about coming up tomorrow with Allan A (ha ha he outbid you guy) and another Ramcat virgin. When will dinner be served?

riverdog
Dec 28 2006, 12:49 PM
Dinner served 11:30, nap to follow..... Same time the pups eat every day. Nap at standard time as well. :D

Didn't know A.aaz' would have a guide. I'll be working, but with you as host he should be in capable hands. A couple of changes to watch out for. #10, rope ladder hole, is in the new anhyzer position, #12 is in new position but visible from the tee, otherwise everything that has a long position is in it. Okay, back to the "Hair of the Dog and Bloody Bash". Weather appears to possibly be an issue, but I'm going to put up tarps over the "bar" as a contingency and I'll be out there pouring Bloody's regardless. I'm not planning on hauling out a lot of cooking stuff but the grills will be fired up and ready for meat if ya got it. Lighting charcoal and pouring Bloody's starting at 11:00 a.m. Discing to follow when we get at it. Come on out and bring your bad head with you!

Sounds dismal from the last forecast. Don't lose heart though. I put up a tarp this afternoon and if the p.m. clears I'll sling a few. Still pouring Bloody's at 11:00 and seeing what shakes out.

Okay, technically I don't even have remedial meteorology training but Hazel says it's looking good. And as everybody who had fun at the ridge on Monday knows there was an awful lot of water on the mountain even though the rain had stopped. Unfortunately with the addition of today's rain and what is to fall tonight and Sunday, it's just going to be way too treacherous to have a big group slipping and sliding around. As you all know, falls are an everyday possibility/probability at Ramcat, even when it's dry. No need to push the envelope when we have a great course down the road in Y'ville to play.

First Sunday Singles for January 7th, 2:00 p.m., Yadkin County Park, $6 with ace pool, optional equipment - waders.

First of all, when Rizzzo's in a boneless state he is an exception to the rules of gravity. Second of all, Ramcat isn't going anywhere, I don't think, so it'll still be there for the A'townians at some point when they won't have to count on Rizzzo's Rules of Gravity. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif :D:cool:

Killer afternoon at Yadkin County Park. Most everyone skeert off by the weather forecast, but a hardy eight of us were pleasantly surprised when the skies suddenly cleared as we were about to start the round and stayed blue and pretty and dry until we got finished. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif ;) Oh yeah. Drownded rats all of us. Brock threw a seven down, amazing under the conditions.

We'll give things a shot at Ramcat Wednesday if anyone's interested. Supposed to be windy and clear today and tomorrow and Wednesday so things should dry out a bit.

Is Stack's course going to be a private or public course?

Gonna be another private. Excellent piece of property with plenty of room for a full 18 holes eventually should he so desire.

Jan 11 2007, 04:47 PM
If he's not desiring 18 hole's then there's seriously something wrong with him. Right now, all I know is that he's not that serious yet. :D

Jan 11 2007, 05:49 PM
obviously you never met Stack because there are serious problems with him. But they have nothing to do with the course. keep me posted about other work days. Would love to help another Yadkinette out. I love me some private course especially in my second fav county.

Jan 13 2007, 09:30 PM
Killer day of work and golf. Stack, Shane, Eddie and myself with three chainsaws between us knocked out four fairways in a couple of hours, threw the five holes with baskets and threw the four new fairways. And let me tell you brothers, you are gonna enjoy. Yadkin County has another very physical course. Truthfully, more physical than Ramcat especially considering it's nine holes.

The name, The Cranberry Disc-o, will be self explanatory when you see how the baskets are rigged. Nuff said on that. Great job Stack, you devious bastage ya.

Adjourned from Stack's to Yadkinville and played a round of doubles, large group, with Senator Glenn celebrating his fortieth birthday by making every put in sight within fifty feet. Da boy was on fire. :D

Pass on my birthday wishes to Senator Glenn for me RD. Nice to know we will have an extended homegrown series now, with Yadkins second private course. Hope you guys didn't cut down all the "trees" out in the county, it's just too early in the season! ;)

Jan 13 2007, 10:47 PM
I'll pass on your regards. JG was most definitely in the zone today once we got to Yadkinville. No slip in the back door putts, all dead in the mouth. And don't worry about Stack taking out too many trees. The big thing to worry about is the haul into and out of the creek bottom. Lift tickets would go for a premium. :D He has a hole similar to #4 Ramcat.... except it's steeper, more drop and has a creek behind the green.

Jan 16 2007, 06:04 PM
Just got off the hook with Mike and he got cables strung for three of the last four holes yesterday. Consequently this weeks Weds afternoon session will be moved to the new Cranberry Disc-o course. It'll only take a few minutes to hang the three baskets with the cable already strung and then the rest of the afternoon can be devoted to playing-in the new course. Shoot for 1:30 or even a bit earlier if possible.:cool::cool:

Jan 17 2007, 08:54 PM
Oh my god, what a course. Those of you that have played Ramcat know what I like, tight, fair, trees, elevation, and The Cranberry Disc-o is all of that in spades..... with water. The water is in the form of a creek that enters into play on three holes. Big old time out there this afternoon. All nine baskets are now hung - it's a Swingin' DB kind of course - with the baskets suspended by chain from steel cable. All nine of them. You will most definitely like, in a sick, masochistic sort of way.

what's up folks. this is taka from snowmass village, co. i was in your neck of the woods during the fall of 2006. due to family -in law health issues, i spent 5 weeks in north carolina and y'all made my stay there not only bareable, but made my stay there a great time.

taka sakai 970-379-0283

i found the yadkin county course on this website and made my way there. i played the first hole and found the second basket but was searching for the second tee box. i saw a guy working on a tee box(#3) and made my way over there to ask for directions. the guy was kevin, the pharmacist, and he not only showed me the next tee box, but took time to show me all 18 holes. thank you kevin. you also have quite a game.

i was totally stoked on playing a new course. and what a course it is. after showing me the course, he gave me his # to call if i wanted to play a private course called "ramcat" for some wednesday doubles.

after my first outing at the yadkin course, i could not get enough. i spent many afternoons there and met some of the best people. there was bryant the butcher. john glenn that worked at a nursing home? dave from industrisal park who ended up driving me up to ramcat on a wednesday. ben the attorney. shane, the very tall guy with quite a game. brock, the younger kid with the crazy 360 drive. eddie, the guy that always had e.carolina gear on and played ramcat with his left hand. jamie, the vet, that has one of the best courses ever in his yard. i met and played with more characters and everyone was awesome. thank y'll so much for a good time and making time to make a japanese guy from colorado feel at home. i appreciate it greatly.

by the way, i've got the ok from aspen skiing company to put in an additional 18 holes up here in snowmass ski area. if y'all ever make it out this way, please call. i can arrange accomodations and show y'all my neck of the woods.

thanks again for an awesome time.

Taka!!!! Great to hear from you guy. Just checking the board for the first time today, unusual for me, but home with a bug that jumped on my aging ***** last night.

The pleasure was all ours. Yup, a right good bunch of boys here involved in disc. Just to whet your appetite, you may have read up thread about Mike Stack's (Stack's the guy with the multi-colored skin/tats) new nine hole course. It's very similar to Ramcat but with a substantial creek. Any time y'all are in "the village" give us a holler.

BTW, I knew you were a ski bum from Snowmass, just never picked up on the Japanese thing. Huh... /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

That's the pretty much firm date. Format this year will be the same as last year, except different - the entire 54 holes (36 Saturday, 18 Sunday) will be played on private Yadkin County courses. The first eighteen will be played as two rounds of nine at Mike Stack's soon to be regionally famous Cranberry Disco, the last eighteen on Saturday at Ramcat, camp Saturday night at Ramcat, play another eye opening eighteen at de 'cat on Sunday morning. As per usual a hearty posole cooked in the pit will be served Saturday evening. Believe me, after playing the Disco and D'Cat supper and a fire will feel awful good. Particulars will be promulgated as they occur to me.

Hey Tim. The only detail worked out thus far are the dates 10-11 March. My notion on this is the same as last year, a grassroots, homegrown if you will, end of winter/first of spring event, when night time temps are still very comfortable for camping, Yadkin County get together. This year we will be starting at the newly installed nine hole Cranberry Disco course of Mike Stack's, play 18 holes there, then head five miles down the road to Ramcat, play another 18, crank up the fire pit, cook some posole, drink some beverage of your choice, play some glow, kick back, spit in the fire, try to keep track of Ant, you know the rest of the drill....... No high octane competition, although the putting duel between Ant and Brock got pretty heated last year. ;) /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif :D Just some fun involving golf and golf people. :D:cool:

Jamie, Thanks again for all y'alls (Yadkinville DGC) support this past weekend at the Inaugural High Country Ice Bowl. It wouldn't of been the same without y'all.

Do you want me to advertise in the High Country kiosk for the Posole Bowl?

I think some of our local High Country Rec. players might have caught the disc golf fever this past weekend at the Ice Bowl. I hear if you catch it, it causes severe throwing up and down and all a round and a round! :D It's also very hard to get rid of. :) Disc golf in NW NC is sick! :D

riverdog
Feb 20 2007, 03:55 PM
Thanks, but naw, let's keep it off the kiosk for now. Intended more as a word of mouth celebration, winter/spring, discing, camping "festivus" for the disc golf trash and rest-of-us. Pass it on to anyone you wouldn't mind sleeping with your dogs for a couple of nights. :D :D:cool:

For the unwashed, Posole Bowl Part Deux, will be the weekend of March 10-11. This year we will be entirely on private courses in Yadkin County, starting at Mike Stack's Cranberry Disc-o about four miles from Ramcat toward Yadkinville. Stack's course is a bit like Ramcat with holly instead of laurel and a substantial creek, Cranberry Creek, kicked in for boot. Let me tell you boys and girls the Cranberry Disc-o really has it going on. We'll play two 9 hole rounds of singles at Stack's before lunch, adjourn to Ramcat and play an afternoon round of singles there. Then we get into the spirit of Posole Bowl with camping overnight, spitting in the fire, hustlin' your overhauls and glow golf for those of a mind to. Glow sticks just hit my desk a few minutes ago. That'll go on 'til we get done or daylight, then another wake-up round of singles Sunday morning to be followed by awards and chasing everybody's raggedyasses off the ridge with a pistola. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif Ahhhh, good times, good times. :D

Moved #18 into a new long pin position, dead straight away and to the right of the big clump of poplars. Walks off at 385-390 slightly uphill and visible from the teebox. Threw some up shots on it late afternoon and they stick well especially to the left of the basket leaving you with a nice, puckery down hill putt for your par.

Got the deer loin and turkey breast, complements of Eddie, smoked as well as some quail breasts. Picking up the sausages and hopefully doing the last of the prep stuff tonight. Gonna be a good un.

It's still a tough lefty drive due to SLIGHT decline on right side of fairway.

riverdog
Mar 08 2007, 03:10 PM
There is also a SLIGHT drop beyond the pin in this new position, so try to rein in that big old left arm. :D

And, anyway, I know I read around here somewhere that they are all lefty holes. :D

Actually a pretty good idea. Do one on Saturday and the other on Sunday making Posole Bole a little more palatable for our eastern NC brethren to make the drive.

(author's note - the apparent pun with palatable and posole was purely coincidental :D)

Big old doings at the ridge...... Some right good golf played, some very good bread broken, a modest amount of malt beverages consumed, and around 25 like minded souls enjoying most of it.

I'm way beyond tired right now and I'll post some details tomorrow, but after everyone left this afternoon there was even more excitement. No one is going to have to look very hard for discs out of the fairway on #18 for a while. No leaves, no underbrush left from the fire...... burned around an acre on both sides of eighteens fairway and just by the grace some positive spirits that the house and the whole mountain didn't burn down. Awfully, awfully, awfully lucky. And none of the fifty or so volunteers and forest service people that were here within 20 minutes or so was hurt either. More later. I've absolutely gotta lay my head down and close my eyes for a while.

WoW looks like I missed all the excitement. Sorry to hear about the fire though hope all is well. Posole 3 ? I think that was my BEST start of a round ever ( taken 3 to get back to pad on a 160 hole ouch) As always thanks for the time at the CAT. Stack thanks for listening to suggestions from a hack lefty, it was a beautiful walk by the creek can't wait to see other nine. Until first Sunday Laaaaaaater

Mar 12 2007, 01:34 PM
PB2 stuff first. Great big fun old time guys. As you have all heard me say the whole thing was about good times and most everyone got it, notched down a couple of gears and just played to be playing. Bradley most definitely got it. Don't think I've ever seen anyone in quite as good a mood taking three shots to get BACK to the tee pad. Thanks to the 25 that made it out for all or a portion of the festivities. Stack sends along his thanks as well and asked that I particularly thank the Hickory huckers for their continued support. And thanks to you Brad for the left handed perspective on the tee pad positioning. When I talked to him last night he had already rectified those problems. Now, tell the truth, is the Disc-o cool or what?

Now for the part of Sunday where we entertained fifty or so volunteer fire fighters and forest service personnel. In all probability a cigarette butt somewhere in the triangle of the quail coop, storage building and #18's fairway started the fire. The last hardy six folks cleared out around three, I went back inside and watched the last four minutes of the State/Carolina game and ate a late lunch. When the game was over I was about to head to the shower and decided to step back outside for a second to pee. As I was crossing the driveway I heard an odd "rustling" kind of noise back toward the storage building. I looked back that way to see the woods in flames from about half way to the house to out of sight down the south side. I hollered over my shoulder for Fran as I ran to the basement hose bibb, grabbed the garden hose and tore out through the woods. Frannie had called 911, ran out, grabbed a cooler someone forgot and started ferrying buckets of water to the other side of the shed from the north side hose. Fortunately I had enough hose rigged to get water all the way to the quail pen so I was able to get a pretty good ways out through the woods and down to the edge of #18's fairway. When I got that far I could see that the fire had already hopped over the fairway and was in the woods below that and already igniting the brush piles from clearing the fairway. Within minutes the flames from those piles were 20-30 feet. I knew there was zip I could do with the garden hose on any of that so I ran back along the edge of the fire putting out new blazes all along the way just trying to keep it away from the house. Seemed like a couple of hours but probably no more than 20 minutes before the pump trucks and such showed up along with the whole corp of rural volunteer firefighters. BTW if you live in a rural area and those folks come around fundraising, give generously. They did a super job getting hoses and hand tools down to the base of the fire in short order and had it more or less stopped from advancing and let it burn itself out inside their circle. The forest service guys called in their D-8, he cut a line all the way around it and for all intents and purposes it was done. Everything is a freaking mess in the woods, but no one got hurt fighting it or from any of the dead trees that fell when their bases burned out, and we slept in our own bed last night which sure seemed in doubt there for a while.

Gonna have to be some rule changes on Ramcat, of course, number one and non-negotiable - NO ONE PLAYS UNLESS I AM THERE!!! Had this fire started when we were away from home the house, building, the whole shooting match would have been gone. Some regrettable changes about smoking on the course also will have to be made as well. I'll fill you in on those when you see me. I love all of you guys and look forward to seeing you at Ramcat again soon. Right now though I am awfully d--n tired. Later brothers.

If you need anything don't hesitate. I'm sure anyone from Hickraw that has had the pleasure of being on the prop will be with me.The Ridge is by far my favorite place to walk after frisbees in the woods so I will do my part to keep it that way. Loved seeing the deer on 18.

Rather surreal little experience I gotta say.

You won't believe what happened at my house last night. While watching the Michigan game downstairs in the basement, Faith comes home from work and goes to the bedroom bathroom. Next thing I know she's yelling "FIRE". I look out the basement window and the back woods is on fire. Me and my roommate run outside with water jugs and try to contain while Faith calls 911. Three firetrucks show up and take care of Fire. This all started from my roommate throwing a cig. butt into the woods. The firemen stated that they have been getting several similar calls due to lack of rain. SO PLEASE SMOKERS watch where you put your butts. If she hadn't come home the house and woods would've been gone due to wind bowing that way. Thank God for Mustard and Ketchup to calm me down.

Jesus Louise Brad!!!!! Thank goodness y'all caught it quickly. Kind of a jerk your as- up by the 'nads feeling isn't it. Glad everything is OK.

If you are in the southeast and don't realize how dry it is.... Sunday when the fire started at our place humidity was in the 15-16% range and has been below 20% for most of the last month. You can go out and think really hard and stir up enough heat to start a fire. Or you can go and not think, toss down a butt and do the same thing.

I will be purchasing a NEW garden hose today. One good thing is less clearing now to put in holes. Nothing like wakn up the neighborhood. I believe I could've put it out with the hose but with the wind it could've sparked up again. It's a rush I don't need again.

Sounds like we could put you two on a hot-shot crew and drop you into a ragging wildfire out west, with all this success fighting fires.

I am happy to report we are at 100% humidity today. As long as the wind doesn't dry things out too bad we should stay moist until most of the veg greens out. Just hold on a few more weeks and your major fire fighting activities will be finished for the year.

Everyone on the planet, keep your butts to yourself!

Most definitely something in the air. Got a note from a friend in Florida and a house he owns in Georgia had a woods fire come within two feet of it on Wednesday before they managed to put it out.
