Justin Landers 3 4 3 3 5 2 3 4 3 5 5 5 3 6 3 3 3 4 67 -1
Weather Update: It is ridiculously nice out. If you're out there and not loving it today, there is something wrong with you.
So Brinster takes a 3 on 888, then a 7 on 17. I realize my 912-rated sorry self has played that hole 74 times in the last 12 months, but if your rating is over 1000, how do you NOT get in that circle of hay bales?
spartan

Oct 16 2003, 12:50 PM
If it's like last year, you retee up to two times if you don't get in the hay bale circle, then proceed to the drop zone which is maybe 80 feet away for your 7th throw.
seewhere
Oct 16 2003, 12:52 PM
ay. thanks Chuck. did they use to have to keep re-teeing?
ck34
Oct 16 2003, 12:54 PM
Yes, but taking a 17 on 17 was considered too extreme and they changed it. It makes sense since most people won't carry 10 Comets or Rocs for 17 holes just in case they need them...
Johansen, good play for round 1!!!!! keep it up and I will wear my lucky sombrero on Sunday!

Overall, are the rules essentially the same as last year or did the dreaded 'throw and distance' for OB everywhere get invoked?
Average rating at event is 984 with Barry highest at 1037 and one player under 900, Zeph Carrigg at 875. Second lowest is at 920.
After 15 scores, the preliminary SSA is 69.4. I believe last year it averaged about 69.0. I expect it to end up a little lower than 69.0 this year for good weather rounds.
Chuck, the rules are essentially the same. At least in the qualifier there was no mention of stroke and distance.
What did DJ Botte eat for breakfast today?
ck34
Oct 16 2003, 01:08 PM
The round ratings I calculated from the spreadsheet at the event last year were: 68.2, 68.8, 69.4, 67.6 Avg=68.5
Sounds like only holes 10 and 11 are somewhat different and maybe tougher?
McCoy beat McCabe and McQuay, so with McDaniel, McRee, and McCray still on the course, it looks like Kevin has the early line on that special McLowScore Happy Meal!

Rodney, here's an opportunity to see about variances in course ratings during different times of the day. Looks like 30% chance for rain tomorrow. See you this weekend.
What did DJ Booty eat for breakfast today?
oops ... how did I do that?
Changes:
Hole 2 - A fairly significant big tree fell in a storm and is now gone. In its place is a 15-foot wide hay-bale bunker which may stop some rollers. I'm don't think it's OB if you happen to end up in the bunker.
Hole 3 - I think the rope is just a tad tighter.
Hole 7 - Fence is a foot higher.
Hole 10 - The tee is more difficult, but the OB is less severe. Should play harder than last year.
Hole 11 - Well-publicized changes to fairway. I think it's easier to stay IB, but harder for short-arms to get to the "green" in 4. Also, the rope on the green is tighter to the pin. Overall, I expect it to play easier.
Hole 15 - I think the rope is not quite as tight.
By the way, there are new sleeves, only 10 or 15 feet from the baskets, on many of the holes. I don't know if they are going to be used. Also, as an added nice touch, every single basket on the Gold Course was replaced with a brand spankin' new DISCatcher.

Chris, I'm a bit surprised by that. I just assumed it was the other way, with the early risers today getting the late start tomorrow.
Danny, there was a picture of the Clown's Mouth up last year, but I can't find the link in the archives. I have some at home. If I remember, I'll send you one.
James, CWare is right. Unlike ball golf, you only have 1 day to set your place in the field.

They only do that in ball golf because there's a cut to Saturday. For fairness, I think players should be with their scoring peers as soon as possible if there isn't a cut.

the 10:40 am card shot very well. -5, -4, -4, -2
The Show Group is in.
Anthon = 63
McDaniel = 64
Nodland = 64
Heeren = 66
Their ratings, respectively, are 1018, 1013, 1013, 1000. On a course like the Gold Course (where 1 stroke equals a little over 5 points), this predicts that Anthon would win the group by 1 over McDaniel and Nodland, with Heeren another 2 strokes back. Man, Chuck and Roger are smart. Of course, SSA is playing around 68 today, so they each actually shot a couple strokes better than expected.

what's up with Climo's 5 on 13? Looks like most took a 3 on it. A 3 on that hole would have him in the lead by a stroke. Is it surrounded by OB? I saw a duece on it by only three people: Scott Renz, Micah Dorius, and Brayn Grawler.
About 300 to clear the OB, then you have to land it precisely in an area in order to avoid another possible OB near the green. I saw him 2 it last year. I'm sure he toke a circle or 2 to get the 5

my boy Justin Jernigan shot a 70 today.....everyone keep in mind that this kid is 17 and qualified for this by winning the Dogwood Crosstown in Advanced.....this was his first PDGA tournament...his score was good enough to qualify during the pro weekend. Now, the pro weekend had lots of rain and winds that made the conditions horriable, so many people did not think he deserved the spot.....well beating 90 some odd ppl shure sounds like he deserves to be there...
He also carded a 4 on number 5.....impressive stuff
ck34
Oct 16 2003, 07:20 PM
If you go for it on 13 and come up short in OB, a 5 is the most likely score since you have to retee and are not likely to go for it again. Even if you want to go for it, it's a very tricky shot to land close 400 feet a way on a crosshill slant that tracks a righty hyzer.

Things you won't see on the highlight reel.
weds. practice round. Steve Brinster takes a 3 on hole 5. 1050 ft hole on a penninsula.
Weds. practice round. Ben "DJ Booty" Botte loses not 1, not 2, not 3 but 4 discs in the same tree along with 2 water bottles, a stick and what we believe to be a rock.
Ryan Renz will not be wearing knickers.
Pete May will be wearing a Hamburgler costume.
Shortest hole on the course #17 may have given the most trouble today. There were alot of people struggling here.
Todd Briner likes homemade icecream, especially the strawberry.

Robert J. Leonard posted,in part:
"this was his first PDGA tournament"
Despite the link to the USDGC on the PDGA homepage, this is not a PDGA tournament. As a normal rule, invitationals, unless they are for a PDGA national or world title, are not eligible for PDGA sanctioning.
Anyone from the peanut gallery confirm this? I seem to recall past posts from Harold when some posters were moaning about something he was doing, and he said that he strived to line up with PDGA guidelines whenever possible, despite this not being a PDGA-sanctioned tournament.
Here's food for thought:
Since the website is promoting a non-PDGA event, do the organizers of the Southern Nationals next year have any right to expect similar treatment?
Does Joe Blow running a non-sanctioned mini expect that same treatment?
Has the PDGA set a precendent that it should not have set?
This is in NO WAY smack talking about Harold Duvall and the USDGC. I have the highest regard for Harold and this tournament. It's just unfortunate that this tournament could not be PDGA-sanctioned, so it would be easier to justify using the website of the PDGA, which is supported greatly by PDGA-registered players, and entry fees from PDGA tournaments.
I'm not out of line for bringing this up, am I?
After all, I AM a DGRZ.

Bill,
If I am not mistaken...I believe that The Masters in Ball Golf is not a PGA Sanctioned event yet they help in its promotion. I think it just betters the PDGA as a whole to help with a nice large Tournament.
disctance00
Oct 17 2003, 11:54 AM
Why would there need to be sanctioning for this tournament? For points? Ratings? Money list? Not trying to be a smrtazz or anything just curios why there is a need for it to be sanctioned.
neonnoodle
Oct 17 2003, 12:51 PM
Bill, you are mistaken. Invitationals are absolutely permitted to be PDGA Sanctioned and PDGA points are provided for them.
I know this because I am running one. The MADC Invitational. You simply need to get approval from the Competition Director.
These invitationals are currently rare, but they are not outside the interests or the bounds of PDGA sanctioning. A sanctioning fee is assessed, $2 per player is assessed, PDGA insurance is optioned, and in many cases PDGA points are offered. Majors, invitational or not, usually (if not always) do not award PDGA points.
The USDGC is a Sanctioned PDGA Major Event.
Hope this has clarified the situation for you.
Best Regards,
Nick Kight
The USDGC is a PDGA Major Event. This is the first year a structured agreement is in place between the PDGA and the USDGC organizing committee.

Texas v North Dakota - the bet that spans the Great Plains.
Looks like a great match-up - only 2 strokes apart - and a bet that may go to the wire. (I assume Nolan is Texas' top guy after day one). Brad, I think the Masters is PGA and the US Open is the one that is not PGA, but rather USGA. I didn't look it up or anything, just going on my hazy memory.

Just to add to the confusion. There's a difference between the PGA and the PGA Tour. They are not the same. The PGA Tour run no majors.
Is 888 back to normal today? Sure looks like it. I still see a couple of 3's though, crazy.
I see that Brinster, Haney, Leyva and one of our brothers from across the pond are in the finals for the distance contest. I sure hope that makes it into someone's video.
Brinster's first round was pretty far off of his player rating going into the event.
Gill, Dorius, and Sprague the consistant players that they are, shot their rating exactly the first round.
Barry was 23 points off his rating and still within striking distance.
Rico, Climo and Russell near the top without shooting much better than their rating 1st round. Schweb also.
i'm bored at work, playing with excel /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif
No way can it be back to normal. Those scores are way to low. I expect to see a few 9's and 10's at least once it goes back.
Curious ... does anyone know how close they are keeping to the actual tee times? I'm also wondering if the 10 minutes is proving to be enough time to keep seperation between groups or if there is a wait on any holes?
cb i agree w/ bs, scores on 888 still too low

sorry if this is a stupid question, but is the course the same today as yesterday? an awful lot of folks are chopping serious numbers off of yesterdays scores!
Should be the exact same course. The only hole expected to change was 888, but don't believe it has. That's just the way this course plays. One day luck could be on your side, and the next day you could have the worst round of your life. This course drove me to retire in 99.

Oct 17 2003, 03:27 PM
I noticed that too. But we are also only seeing the bottom finishers from yesterday's scores so far.
Considering that almost everyone there is a top player from somewhere, the people that had "bad rounds" yesterday are all more than capable of calming down and cranking up the golf a few notches. So a lot of better scores isn't really unreasonable.
How's that for rationalizing the scores that are up? /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif

I can not remember a previous instance where we've moved pins. I do not think that it is wise.
Hole #12 (888) is being played from a temporary position. Rock Hill's finest are training in that area and we did not want to distract them and vice versa. 888 should be open for business and looking to create some drama tomorrow and Sunday. Any weather report from Rock Hill?

climo -7 with 6 to go... smellin a record?
-7 with 5 to go. Record is -12. Not too many fo for 15. We'll see.
I am sitting on the NC/SC border looking outside as it is getting dark, really quick. Hope nothing too crazy hits.
Getting the last 5 is tough. #15 is really tough to deuce. It would be cool though. My guess is he shoots -9 overall. Another 59.
The weather is looking wild. I am sitting on the NC/SC border and it got really dark, really quick. Hope nothing too crazy happens.
-8 for Barry, that should help..
Sorry about the two posts. I have way too many windows open trying to track everything. Didn't get too much done at work this afternoon.

Zeph Carrigg from Oregon, one of the 2 ZoneDriven Free Ride winners seems to have disappeared from the score boards at USDGC Round 2 and the PDGA. What happened? Did he get hurt, DNF, or DQed? Anybody know?
can't imagine how exciting this must be visually

Zeph Carrigg was a no-show. His 140 score on the first day was a courtesy par 4 while the tournament staff waited for him to arrive.

Zeph Carrigg shot a 71 ( 3) on the first day which was really hot for his 875 rating (as Chuck Kennedy pointed out earlier). I wonder why he didn't show up? What a waste!

Did Zeph Carrigg, Carlo Pelg, and Daryl Cormier all play on the same card on Day 1? If so, was there some problem with their score card that DQed them all? All 3 are now shown as DNF on Day 1 when Carrigg had already had a 71 reported as of Fri morning.

shot 1550 photos today (not including the ones I am going to shoot at the player party)
My finger is tired.
Will have lots more photos for you folks tomorrow AM. I tracked the top 13 groups a few holes each, so there's a lot of photos on a lot of holes left to go.
Enjoy the ones from yesterday, there are a lot more to come.

Has anyone elsed noticed that Craig Leyvas score is totaled incorrectly????? I've counted it 5 times and I get -4 not -3
Theres actually a variance between PDGA scores and USDGC on hole # 11 the pdga has a 5 usdgc has 4????

DES - NICE ROUND!!! /msgboard/images/clipart/happy.gif
Leyva is a TEXAN! The Cali's and Bulldogs owe us rent.
Nolan, quit chili dippin' and shoot a 55.
Big kharma to Leyviar and lip neck Landers.
Actually, Mr. Leyva is from Cal. but was here in Arlington, Tex. when Veterans Park went in in '90 and was our top player for many years after winning the inaugural VPO in '91. He'll always be thought of as one of ours.
The current ADGA club champion is Nolan Grider who'll be defending his VPO crown in three weeks.
John Maiuro is our club pro and we're very proud of him also.
Also deserving mention here is long time ADGA member Brian Mace.
GGGGGOOOOOOOO!!!!ADGA
P.S.
Yall come down to see us some time.
OOPs, my bad. John Maiuro is our current club champ having knocked Nolan off the throne in a playoff this year. Sorry John.

Interesting in the difference in SSA between yesterday and today. Players that shot the exact same score today and yesterday got different ratings, as much as 10 points difference!
