Just a reminder that the Durham monthly is this Saturday at Cornwallis Road Park. The first of two rounds starts at 11 am, with registration from 10 - 10:45 am. If you don't have other plans and are up for a fun day of disc golf in the heat..... come on out. There will be nice payouts for each division and a few CTP prizes. See you there!

Jul 09 2003, 10:19 AM
All of you guys from Durham are suppose to be coming to the Pro-Am in Burlington. Forget the monthly and come out to play in the PDGA event!!

Hope to see you guys there.

Durham's July Monthly Results...

Once again "Discraft Diamond" Dave McQuay took top honors in the Open/Pro division by shooting a hot 21 under (-8 from the alt pads and -12 from the regs). He also snagged the $42 ace pool by getting the first ace of the day on hole #4 during the second round. There were two other aces hit in the second round.... Robbie Dunn got #9 & Scott Williams hit #12.

In the Open division, Dave birdied the last 3 holes to squeeze out a 1 stroke victory over Robbie Dunn & Jim Markov who both shot 88's for 20 under.

In the Advanced division, the top two spots were taken by two guys who moved up from the Am division this month. Norman Williams shot a 94 (with a smokin' 41 on the regs during the second round) & John Sheffield took 2nd with a 99.

There were 14 players in the Am/Intermediate division and Scott Williams took first with a 101. Jamie Perkins placed second with a 103 and Miles Dunn (14 years old) took third with a 104.

For all the scores & closet-to-hole winners, surf on over to:

> shooting a hot 21 under (-8 from the alt pads and -12 from the regs).

Uh ... last I checked -8 -12 = -20, not -21. Correct total score 2 strokes = -18, therefore Robbie and Jim tie for first. /clipart/happy.gif

Jul 13 2003, 09:41 AM
Dooooh. I guess my math is almost as good as Robert's spelling :^)
Looks like I need to proof my posts a bit better before sending. Fortunately the scores are/were correct on the webpage link, but here's the actuals for Dave, Robbie & Jim.

Dave actually shot 46 (-8) & 41 (-13) for the winning total of 87 (-21)
Robbie shot 46 (-8) & 42 (-12) for an 88 (-20)
Jim shot 47 (-7) & 41 (-13) also for an 88 (-20)

Jul 13 2003, 12:08 PM
> Dave actually shot 46 (-8) & 41 (-13) for the winning total of 87 (-21)

Darn! I thought I'd figured out the reason for all his success since switching to discraft. /clipart/happy.gif

Just wanted to annouce this little shin-dig we're throwin' over at the Carolina course to all of you Durham folks-

This Saturday (October 4th) will be the LAST doubles event for the fall season here at the Carolina Outdoor Education Center course. We have decided to have a CTP blowout of the ACE pool money, here is the deal:

The event will cost $2 to play in and $1 to take a shot at the Ace and CTP prizes.

There will be at least 9 CTP holes for plastic (Innova and Discraft). Two additional holes will split the ace pool cash for Saturday's event (i.e., if there are 10 entrants, two CTP's will be for $5 cash). In the event of an ACE, all CTP plastic and cash will go to the person who hits it.

The usual payout to the winners of the event will also take place.

Come out and take a shot on a fine fall morning!

Hole #1, Start time: 9:30AM

The random doubles at Valley Springs played the last Thursday night event (at least until next year), last night. It moves to Sundays starting THIS Sunday at 10:30 am.

Also, the random doubles that's been playing Tuesday nights at Cornwallis, moves to Saturday starting tomorrow. The Cornwallis doubles occurs on all Saturdays except BCDC Monthly Events (2nd Saturday of each month).

Chris,

Can you please give us some more details about the proposed changes to Valley Springs? Which holes are you talking about? Have you considered just adding Alt tee pads but keeping the course as is? Lastly, who will decide which changes (if any) will be made? Valley Springs is my favorite course in the Triangle, so I'm quite interested in this.

Dear Chris, Diamond Dave and the BCDC movers and shakers,

PLEASE don't be hasty about making changes at Valley Springs! It is already such a great course. Why tamper with it? I've played almost every course in NC, 62 to date, and VS is one of my favorites. It's my favorite course in the Triangle! I think that every course should have a Mission statement about what it seeks to be. For example, Kentwood is a great beginner's course to introduce lots of NC State students to the sport. I think that VS has a great niche of being just the right challenge while not too long for the average player (coincidentally like myself). I think that there are lots of people like me who don't have big arms and don't throw all that far. But VS is still a great challenge with some excellent hyzer and anhyzer fairways. Please tread cautiously before making any changes. Valley SPrings is such a great course already!!

Dec 07 2003, 08:33 PM
Was anything decided at the meeting about the changes to Vally Springs?

Eric

Dec 07 2003, 09:38 PM
I could'nt make it (Wife's Birthday) But I heard a "statement" was signed by 14 of the 16 people that were there, saying they did not want the course changed, and they would really like to have shorter tee pads installed ,for it plays too long the way it is. :p

What about the four club meetings when only three showed up?(happened to be officers)

Cool Monthly this weekend!!!
Crosstown Event!!! regular tees at both courses.
First round at Cornwallis 11:00
I believe I am undefeated so far this year at the monthlies I have competed in.Bring it on!!!

Dec 07 2003, 11:54 PM
From the discussions at the courses and at Sals this past Monday, it does seem there are a lot of local disc golfers (some new, but many who have played the course for years) who really like Valley Springs in it's current layout and would like to be able to continue playing it that way..... BUT the "statement" passed around didn't rule out additions to the course... it just said to leave the current layout "as-is". Most everyone I've seen or talked to is open to adding alternate pads where applicable (mostly longer pads, but some have expressed an interest in shorter ones).... Also there was talk of actually adding baskets on holes 5 & 7 to allow for the proposed changes and yet still keep the current baskets (there are courses that have multiple baskets and that would allow everyone to get their wish).

One thing that's been very positive with the discussions surrounding changes to Valley Springs has been the number of people who have spoken up to say how much they like our little course here in Durham. At the Kentwood monthly in Raleigh today, I even had a couple golfers tell me that VS is their favorite course in the Triangle.... and that they frequently drive over from Raleigh to play.

Enough rambling from me...... now how about this week's Crosstown.....Cornwallis regs for everyone in the morning.... SWEEEEEEEEEET

changes to 7? did you mean 9 or 17 i dont rember any changes to 7 ever being disscussed?????

mugilcephalus
Dec 09 2003, 05:32 PM
The vast majority of those in attendance were against the proposed changes. However, circumstances didn't really allow for a fair representation of the other side. As Robbie stated, most think that the alt tees are a good idea and additional baskets would also be acceptable. The holes that I heard discussed were 5, 9 and 12. I think we have a potential safety issue with the alternate location for 18, there are lots of softball players warming up there on the weekends.

Anyway, everyone have fun at the monthly, I'll miss another one on account of being in Arizona.

Chris, I heard there was an addition to your family. Congratulations!

Dec 09 2003, 06:12 PM
thanks steve sorry you can't make it this week-end. i do have an addition natalie josephine benson came at 32 weeks. she is 3 lbs 15 oz and doing great. again thanks to steve for being the ONLY officer at the meeting. hopefully we can use the january meeting as a venue to get everyone together and come to some concensus as to what to do at valley springs. i am glad to hear there is iterest in alt tees and dual pins. if there could be ONLY ONE pin location for each hole i would favor moving a couple, BUT there ain't no rule in discgolf land that says you must only have one. **** i likedisc golf land i hope i can live there one day.

Dec 09 2003, 07:21 PM
I actually meant 12..... don't know how 7 came out of it.... but holes 5 & 12 were the ones where secondary baskets were mentioned at the meeting.

Dave, I got the Hawks in today.

I can see why you like them. Very grippy.

I got your white one and I picked up a blue one(174) which I will put up as a CTP at Buckhorn Open.

Thanks Plank. You should hold on to the Blue one and drop your scores a little bit!!

I found your pink Champinion Beast (B 1) in the woods on the left of 18, up near the tee at Valley Springs. I saw Steve Waters and gave it to him. Just wanted to let you know the fate of your disc.

If your going to throw a pink disc you had better throw it well(ask John). Also, the stickers of Jusin Timberlake and Nick Lechey are illegal, I suggest you remove them from the rest of your discs.

Just rolled in from a long day of disc golf in High Point at Mooky's Cup PDGA C-Tier tournament..... Today there was a full field of 90 advanced/amateur players with over 20 on the waiting list.... (the pros play tomorrow)... I happy to report that BCDC was represented well at today's event.

Finishing 1st in the large 51 person advanced field was John Sheffield... shooting a 5 under (49) in the first round from the short pads, and following it up with a strong 5 under (49) from the longer blue tees (pulling in $109 in prize plastic for his efforts). Robbie Dunn finished 1 stroke back with an 8 under (46) from the shorts and a 1 under (53) from the blues (coming away with $89 in plastic). Also, Chris & Miles Dunn both placed in the intermediate division and each won some plastic.

The big winner though was Steve Waters.... pulling in the big dough in the previous evenings card game :^)

Feb 22 2004, 08:42 AM
What's up with those tees at Valley Springs? Are they going to be the new "am" tees? They are nice, but I definately prefer to play from the old tees during tourneys and such.

Oh I think someone carved their name into the wet cement at Cornwallis(hole 4 alt). I didn't notice, but I think Hole 10 Alt could use some cement too next time it is going to get poured

Feb 22 2004, 10:28 AM
What's up with those tees at Valley Springs? Are they going to be the new "am" tees?

During the club meetings in Durham where there was discussion of redesigning Valley Springs (moving baskets, etc).... The decision was made to NOT do any major redesign to the course, but to add alternate tees on most holes and add alternate baskets on a couple of holes. There will basically be 3 sets of pads at VS..... Call them what you want, but there will be the regular pads, longer pads and shorter pads... I have a feeling the regular pads will be used at the Durham monthlies, while the Pros will occaisionally have a go from the longs.... The shorter pads are being put in to allow golfers who may be threatened by the regular pads at VS.... an opportunity to play a shorter course like Cornwallis.... For PDGA events, you'll most likely see the regular tees used, until there are pads in place for the longer alts...... As they say, variety is the spice of life :^)

Plankeye
Feb 22 2004, 11:12 AM
yeah, I was there for the walkthrough for the new holes and I knew that some people were against it. I just didn't know they were going to install shorter pads instead.

Some of the shorter pads though, make holes too easy.

Feb 22 2004, 11:37 AM
yeah, I was there for the walkthrough for the new holes and I knew that some people were against it. I just didn't know they were going to install shorter pads instead.

Again there are longer & shorter pads being put in.... Although I haven't played the shorter ones, they do appear to make the course easier (which was the idea).... Of course the longer pads are going to make it quite a bit more difficult..... The beautiful part is that in casual rounds, you get the choice of what you want to play......

The biggest difference in the short/long alts is that it's a lot easier to add short pads, since there's usually not much that needs to be done other than putting in the markers/pads. With the longer pads and alt baskets, there is some clearing involved which does take more time... and in some cases requires approval from Parks & Recs..... Also the people involved with the shorts (Ed K & others) have invested a lot of time (and their own money) in getting these pads in place. Guess it's time for another volunteer day at VS to work on the longs....

On to Cornwallis.... Robbie Crownover's son is working on concrete alt pads at Cornwallis as part of a Scout project. If you see him out there working.... don't forget to thank him for his efforts.

I just wanted to express a little concern on the location of the long pin for hole 17. To me it seemed to be a little close to the tee pad of hole 18. I would suggest moving it down the hill some (assuming that is still park land) or shortening the hole some. It isn't a real big issue, but could become one should that placement ever be used for a tournament (as there is usually a back up on 18's tee).

mugilcephalus
Feb 23 2004, 06:38 PM
Mark,
I was concerned about that as well. However, anytime we're playing those alts, the new tee on 18 will come into play. Stand on 18's tee looking away from hole 17. Follow the green tape down the hill. It's going to be frightful...

marksout
Feb 23 2004, 06:48 PM
I cringed everytime I saw the green tape... lot of tight tunnels to follow once you reach the regular green.

Remember ,I'm not going to put you down on the list till I get something in writing. Deuce on people!!! Dave.

I don't get out to durham much anymore that I don't work out there but there is definatly one thing that cornwallis great for. My wife and I have had some great times playing doubles out there (or singles). It's a great beginner course, especially for women. She had her first back to back birdies out there.

The alternate course is definatly an improvement given the space you've got to work with out there.

I've already posted about this on the Team Fish thread, but i wanted to get the word out to all the BCDC people. Disc golfers for cancer is a 24 hour DG marathon, similar to Relay for Life. There's a link from the PDGA home page. I'd like to have the event in Durham (I was thinking Valley), but i'd need help. If anyone from the BCDC would be willing to help me, please let me know. The event doesn't have to be 24 straight hours, it can be 12 hours over 2 todays, so i was thinking about doing it over a weekend. This is where i'd need help. I don't know if i can get off work to be there on saturday, so i'd need someone there to run it. If i get enough interest, i'll get more info from the national organizer. So if you want to play some DG to help a good cause and get a sweet players pack, let me know.

It depends on the weekend, but I'm potentially interested in helping with the cancer benefit tournament, if we have it in the Triangle area.

The Dunn-asty will be there in full force.....

Yesterday at breakfast, Chris said he was due an ace since he only has one and it's been quite a while since he hit it... Last night we played the WilBros weekly random doubles at Cornwallis and not only did he ace hole #8 to take the $36 ace pool.... but his team shot 15 down to take the victory (snapping my streak at 3 wins straight).....

I'll take Robbie D right now - we need revenge after our great showing of doubles at Tarheel

Well I'm glad he aced the best disc golf hole in the area

Get ready for the Big Valley Challenge by playing in Durham's Monthly at Valley Springs this Saturday. As usual, there will be two rounds played and the first round starts promptly at 11am.

Not to mention it will give you an opportunity to check out the Swedish Spinna in all it's glory.....

Now who's takin' the pro cash tomorrow?

May 08 2004, 12:11 AM
in reference to the question, and i quote. "who's takin' the pro cash tommorrow?" see previous team fish thread post or read below.

check it.......bring the snap and the cash to donate to T.Fluv

i think this will illuminate, and at the same time, clerify the answer to the question posed by B.Marinus.

also check the team fish thread for my latest crumpalicious citrification(prison vocabulary) on the life and times of T.Fluv aka the sweddish spinna 2 d's for double dose and 2 n's for naughty naughty.....also known as, in the corporation street sector, THE SWEDDISH PIMP 2 d's for double dose.
