i'm an IT guy and so far i've never been a fan of streaming. Even with a monster connection( we have 100mb+ at work) video is always choppy and crappy. Would rather see disc golf monthly back when i had comcast. the exception was wehn i had a chance to stream sunday night football this year on the new silverlight 2 or 3 platform. smooth and sweet. not sure what this broadcast is like as i refuse to give out my credit card to sign up. that's ridiculous if it is supposed to be free. why would they need my credit card number? didn't anyone at pdga screen this first?

The PGA performed flawless streaming video all year with their tour events and most of the FEDEX CUP events. The video feeds were live and not patchy at all. I am betting their budget is a little larger then the PDGA's though!

good call on posting both links... money is tight here as well (as i'm sure it is most everyone) but I would strongly encourage everyone who uses this online service over the weekend to donate something to show support... donate 10 if you're glad they at least have it but the technology/coverage didn't work well or maybe wait and donate 25+ near the end of the tourney if things went well or you found value in the service.
i plan to wait and see what I think about it and donate something near the end based on the overall impression. I'm thinking by the final round it will be amazing being able to follow the action w/ video for the first time ever live!

Chuck in your experience how long does it take to play holes 1-6, 7-12, 13-18.
A round takes about four hours. Each 6-hole segment has a hole where groups tend to stack up: 5, 10 and 13. Seems like players still get thru holes 1-6 fastest with the most birdie holes. I think four will play faster this year with the redesign which may just mean hole 5 will stack up faster than before.
Check out the new story I just posted on the PDGA Home page from yesterday's action.

It's boggles my mind that during the qualifying round, 4 players had to go into a playoff to determine the last 2 spots. And then later find out that the first 2 cards to start the tournament went out as a threesome (and who knows how many other 3somes there were throughout the day). Those 2 open spots should have went to the guys that fought so hard all day trying to qualify and came up just short in the playoff. What a heartbreaker that would have been. It would have meant a lot to ANY player trying to qualify to get in to one of the open spots (that are realized after registration Tuesday night).
In fact, I had heard Sunday afternoon that Markus was not going to be there to play this year. So to see his name appear on the 7:44am tee time was a little bit of a surprise.
I strongly feel that if you have not registered by Tuesday night's mandatory players meeting, then your spot should be filled by the next in line with the best qualifying round. Sending out a 3some when there's so many capable and eager people wanting to play in the tournament seems like an unfortunate oversight and flaw in the system which I hope gets rectified moving forward.
In addition to, players qualifying, not paying in the 30 days, and then later taking a qualifying (another) spot from a more deserving individual.

It's the first day using brand new technology and one would expect there to be a few bugs to work out. All the testing in the world may not prepare you for several thousand people trying to connect at once.
I swear: disc golfers must be one of the most impatient, unrealistic, cynical, and unappreciative groups of people I have ever come across in my 36 years on this planet. If you're so unhappy with the PDGA, then please don't renew next year.
People always exaggerate stuff like this. Disc golfers are just as impatient. Just as unrealistic. Just as cynical. Just as unappreciative... as EVERY OTHER GROUP OF PEOPLE ON THIS PLANET. Seriously, humanity in every walk of life is full of ****. Disc golfers aren't unique or special in any particular way.
For people that'll argue the other side of the coin: We're also just as generous, as willing to give a bed or couch, as hospitable, and as... whatever... as any other group of people. There is nothing special about disc golfers, and nothing terribly horrible.
In other news: Keep tearing it up Tyler, Ziggy, and hope Daemon comes in hot over the rest of his round. Good luck to all the people lucky enough to be out there.
-Chris.

Great post Woj.
Looking at 6 hour rounds now...Yeti might be done by 9.
Hole 4 is playing great. Hole 10 is playing well too. Great changes to the course.
Hole 8 sets up perfectly for a deuce run after a good drive. You want to clear the log, so you keep it at least chain high, probably throwing understable or sidearm. 2 eagles already, I anticipate a couple more before the week is over.

I played with Dave Greenwell. He couldnt even move his head side to side, but almost took home the $10K with a near ace on 3.
I started follwoing Feldberg and Phil's group on 8. At the time Phil was 4 under and Feldberg was -1. When I left on hole 13 Dave was 7- and Phil was 6-.
Perfect day for golf. Some folks might be sad to learn that they may have played hole 12 wrong. If you tee off OB you have the option to re-tee or go to the drop zone. When this issue came up while follwoing Phil and Dave some folks indicated that early morning players that threw OB played there 3rd shot where they went OB. This looks like it will entail a 2 stroke penalty for some. It sucks that one of the alleged is currently in the top five.

I have only one minor quibble with the site doing the online broadcase, and it is a very minor quibble to be taken up with todocast and not the PDGA: Their embedded video software (I think they used flash, and not an embedded version of an actual video player) would not stay full-screen when you tried to do anything else. This kinda hurts those few of us lucky enough to have an s-vid connecting up with a television.
It would have been badass to be watching this full screen on my TV while I was browsing the web. :) Not a complaint, just a quibble. Overall: very awesome! What little I caught at the end was fantastically well done.
Actually I thought of one other minor thought: is there any way to give the 'boys in the booth' control over which camera is being aired? Or put the people making this decision in the same room as them so that they can direct it? Multiple times I noticed them being caught mid-sentence talking about one group on, say, 18, as it cut to guys on 17. Giving them the ability to control that would really smooth out the broadcast.
I hope things keep running smoothly, and thanks much for a very cool new feature this year.

First, they need to kick Mace off of the broadcast. He's the most boring person I've ever heard in my life. I don't think his face was even moving. I say replace him with Billy Crump. Second, I want to give props to all my Georgia boys. Phil Arthur -7(smoking hoTT), Rand and Brad Hammock -3 (very nice), and Chim Chim -2 (very modest). Keep it up boys and kick Dollar and Kev in the rear to get them started. You guys are making us all very proud.

Defending champion Garrett Gurthie nearly threw it a Texas mile during a Wednesday distance qualify session that blew away the scores from last year.
The 19-year-old, of Gainesville, Fla., chunked a handful of Innova Pro Destroyers over 600 feet. His best was recorded at 654, which was nearly 150 feet further than the throw that won it for him last year against Avery Jenkins. Jenkins, always a contender in the long throw, squeaked by and tied for sixth.
The top six of all who attempted at the Winthrop golf course moved on to compete in finals Thursday at a time and location that will be later determined.
Others who made the cut include: Robbie Bratten at 615, Matt Orum at 609, Coda Hatfield at 600, Dion Arlyn at 594, and Avery Jenkins and Jeremy Koling were tied at 582.
Gurthie said his drive style and run-up changes little from his normal heaves except for an extra hop before he releases. He said others my try to do a 360- degree type hurl release, but thats never worked for him. Gurthie, who has been playing since age 3, uses new light weight Pro Destroyers, which he said are easier to control than beat up discs

this pretty much sums it up but the exciting interesting part was after Avery threw he was somewhere around 5th or 6th w/ some bombers still to go. it looked near certain that he wouldn't be in the finals w/ Big Jerm, Manabu, Nikko, Henry Childres, Brinster and some other known big arms still to come through. As you know Jerm did end up tying him and he made it.

Richard, the challenge with live coverage of "888" is the lake. The cameras are connected to the live (IPTV) truck over a hard wired cable. The cable can not be run through the water and the logistics of running the cables around such a large body of water are....well....challenging. I do not blame you for wanting to see it! It is impressive to watch.
I would like to say thank you to all the people who are appreciating this live IPTV coverage. It is a DAUNTING task. I am not trying to speak for Dr. John Duesler , the PDGA or any of the other companies involved with providing this IPTV broadcast, but, I do have to say as a member of the professional film community that this live feed is IMPRESSIVE! It may not yet look like what we are accustomed to seeing (Tiger Woods on CBS), but this is truly groundbreaking for our sport.

richard, if you like golf, but are a critical fan, the pdga would like to officially discourage you from renewing your membership next year. cheers. phil is amazing.
a favorite story of mine is phil arthur putting to a portable target, in the lobby of the world's host hotel, from three stories up, off the observation rails, saying 'bucket.' people in the area didnt even play golf and said they would come back to see that, but who wouldn't?
setting up to be a great weekend. too many top notch people in the top twenty.

3 Tied At Lead For Putting Crown
puttingBy Todd Harrell
25 putts in a row is the score to beat after three players achieved that Wednesday during the first round of the putting competition.
Ross Brandt, of St. Paul, Minn., J.D. Ramirez, of Sachse, Texas, and Paul Ulibarri, of Showlow, Ariz., all qualified.
Qualifying took place near the players’ reception area where a 10-rung rope ladder was laid out in front of a basket. Players were asked to sink as many putts without missing from each rung of the ladder, up and back down the rungs and possibly back up again depending how hot they were putting. The disc golfers could retry as many times as they wanted.
Many could hit 10 in a row, but more than that was rare. Some competitors spent the better part of an hour trying to crack the record.
Qualification will continue until Saturday when finals will take place at the clubhouse.
By Todd Harrell
Some 4,800 Internet viewers tuned in to disc golf history as they watched a live production, for the first time, at Wednesday’s first round of the USDGC.
Registered viewers got the full treatment of commentaries, graphics, player interviews, and more. Interestingly, the project, one more tool in disc golf cracking the big time, is just as much of a quest of sorts as it is a landmark event.
Early on the PDGA tried to get sponsors and underwriters for such an endeavor, but few were willing to make the commitment without seeing evidence of a finished product, which was nonexistent.
“It’s the first time we’ve ever done this,” said executive producer John Duesler Jr.
Essentially, the broadcast has come about to provide that evidence so potential sponsors for future tourney broadcasts will have a working example of live disc golf coverage and the many hungry fans that tune in.
In the spring, the PDGA formed a partnership with Eplanet Media, a web video production company, and Todocast, which provides satellite link for web streaming. In order to get the project up and running, the team made a $40,000 to $50,000 investment to fund the project.
After a hectic day one, Duesler said it was an overall success. Though, with any quest there was bound to be some bumps in the road. Preparation for the enormous task had to be done in a flash since the team’s production crew, EPlanet, had to travel cross-country from San Jose, Calif., from a previous gig earlier in the week. The whole crew only had one day to get the entire 25-man crew orientated to the USDGC production.
Not surprisingly, on the first day of coverage, things were a bit hectic. Duesler admitted there were kinks to iron out. He said the biggest learning curve was the broadcast’s first hour when it became very evident just how many pieces there were to produce a live picture for a mass audience. Probably the biggest problem came when the web streaming server, which was receiving intense attention from viewers, had to be switched to a better setting. He said that was a relatively quick fix, and the rest of the day ran smoother.
“It will improve greatly today,” he said.
In all, the team produced five hours of coverage on Wednesday. However, they limited the coverage to only a handful of holes from the Winthrop Gold course this year. Monday viewers saw live action from holes 1, 3, 17, and 18. Duesler said the team didn’t want to take on live video of the entire course because it would have been too complex and expensive for this year’s effort. Besides, he said his team wanted to tackle a project size that they could ensure high quality.
Still, the existing coverage is packed with goodies including: commentaries, player interviews, pre-taped features, commercials, viewer interaction features, and other segments. Plus, they have some delayed video from the non-live holes that will be woven into the broadcast.
Granted, the production may not rival CBS’s coverage of the PGA Masters, but it is quite a step beyond years past when the main coverage options were post tournament highlights or listening to web radio coverage. Even web cams, which helped lay the foundation for live tourney coverage, could only go so far, said Duesler, who is also the PDGA’s director of communications.
“This has elevated us to the next level,” he said.
In the past, Duesler said the PDGA has tried to pay to put segments of disc golf video on mainstream television networks, however such efforts can be extremely expensive. Even then the video was often relegated to early morning hours.
However, that might not be a problem with the way TV is gravitating to the Internet, especially sports coverage.
“We’re almost leapfrogging TV,” Duesler said.
After Wednesday, Duesler said he was pleased they were meeting their goal of reaching 5,000 to 10,000 viewers and, for the fact that the production team was nearing their quest to obtain live coverage proof so future tourneys may continue to be live.
bravo.

I watched some of the live coverage Thursday. I'm still trying to figure out if it was better than watching dots for the lead group. It was disc golf live, and that's certainly better than disc golf dead. If they follow the lead group for the last round, that will be something much better than today's show.

richard, if you like golf, but are a critical fan, the pdga would like to officially discourage you from renewing your membership next year.
I must have missed something along the way. I'm not sure what you mean by this. I love disc golf and I do support the PDGA. You really don't have a choice if you plan on playing more than 10 tournaments in a year. There's always going to be a governing body. The sport would grow a lot faster if people would accept/recognize that and just get on board. There will always be things that could go a little better, but from what I see it's as close as you can get for now.
PDGA, keep up the good work, but continue to grow. That's all we ask for. I'll be a member for as long as I'm able to throw these little plastic thingies around.

I got to watch a couple of hours yesterday afternoon. I thought the interviews, commentary, and even the commercials were good. Rather enjoyable.
So, for me the icing was nice. But, I was hoping for more cake. Names, scores, play-by-play, and the like. More about the game being played at the moment.
I ended up trying to supplement so I could figure out what was happening. Dots was some help, but it seemed to be pretty jumpy on my computer. I tried DGRus chat, but not much on there about USDGC. The leader board caught my interest -- they referred to it a couple of times (and even put the camera on it once), but I never figured out if it was online or not.
Gave some thought to printing out the tee time list so I could match the names with the groups being filmed. It didn't seem as though the commentators had done that either. Names were sketchy.
I think if I had the tee time list, could get DOTS to quit jumping around, could find the leader board online, and could find a pretty good chat room, then this afternoon will be much better. I'd better get busy.

DOTs were a little jumpy for me too. All in all I think the work they have done is tremendous. The difference from Day1 to Day2 is totally visible. This is a work in progress and one that should be perfected for next year. Can't wait to see some live action from courses out in Cali and AZ. Hopefully they get enough monetary support to be able to follow the National Tour. We can dream, can't we.
In case I forgot to mention........GO PHIL, we're tuned in here in the A-Town. Represent!!

One of the problems for the announcers knowing who is on the screen is that they are shooting outdoors in bright light and see the players on a small monitor. Even if they knew all of their names perfectly, they can't always see well enough to identify them onscreen even though it's somewhat shielded. Something to consider for future improvements.

come on I dont even travel and I am also looking at a monitor and can tell who the players are better then the announcers
now take your monitor (or a laptop)... go outside with it... sit down and set the monitor ~5 feet in front of you. Try telling us who all of the players are without squinting, leaning forward and still trying to look presentable as if thousands of people are watching you. I have a feeling they're doing a better job than most of us could!
like someone else said... i'm sure there are some things they need to improve on ... like being able to view their monitors or get info a different way.

I'd suggest using a CDN provider for at least the usdgc site if not the video streaming in the future. Akamai, Mirror Image or Limelight would buffer this limited site traffic so your poor rackspace boxes can breath at the origin. 4,800 connections is great start. Hope you one day have to deal with 4,800 new connections a second.

Cut them some slack guys, this is new and pretty darn cool for all of you to be able to watch. I can remember back just a few years and everyone was just watching the live updates every six holes. The USDGC is taking it to another level as they usually do and everyone is still freaking out.
I am pretty sure that none of these guys are professional announcers and do this maybe once a year. Be happy with what we have and thanks to all who are making it happen. As Chuck said, they are sitting in a tent with the monitor in front of them about five feet back. They are not sitting in a booth like the PGA guys with million dollar equiptment.
Wish you all were here to see it live! :-)

Looks like the weather finally rolled in. It'll be interesting to see how the top players change their game.
Unfortunately, it probably means we won't be able to see much anymore. Hole 17's camera is on already and it's daaarrrkkk.
You also gotta wonder if the flag guy is pacing in front of the camera on purpose. :) He looks like he needs a chair and an umbrella.
