How about some more interesting information to discuss:

<font color="red"> Southern Star Brewing Company </font> On Board with The Suds The areas newest brewery, Southern Star, will have their grand opening on April 5, our first day of play. Southern Star Partner (and disc golfer), Jeff Vogel, will provide TxSDGC with at least four kegs to help us celebrate their birthday and our State Championships! :D

I believe dry fit is okay, but let me confirm and get back to you with an informed answer.

From the TD:

Added Pro Cash Passes $4000!
Texas States is always one of the best per-capita payout events in the world (look it up!). With sponsorship collected and pledged over $4000, and 100% pro payout (this means your ENTIRE entry fee goes into payout) TxSDGC will again maintain this player-directed tradition of great pro payouts. And the AM payout will again be at least 110% with a large selection of discs and DG related merch.

Not to interrupt the flow of the comical banter, but I was told that the Dry Fit style shirts would suffice at an A tier. Can anyone verify this, and if it is allowed, does the Country Club allow them. Thank you.

Correct on the A-tier part, however for the Club...

From the TD:

QVCC Dress code with note about Mock tee shirts:
"Proper attire is required for all players. Shirts or blouses with collars, golf or walking shorts and slacks and skirts (for women) are considered proper attire. Mock collared t-shirts are allowed but the collar must be at least one inch high which is obviously (and noticeably) higher than a regular t-shirt (nice or otherwise). Not permitted: Regular T-shirts (nice or otherwise), tank tops, bluejeans, cutoffs, jams, or other athletic shorts and bathing suits are not permitted."

I have to admit, the discussion is amusing. So, how is it, given that the Pro entry for the past two years was $115, and it is still $115, that somehow there has been some increase to "support" the country club atmosphere? This must be the old math because I don't think the new math covers it.

Me thinks this is a weak argument. Now, the argument that the cost per say is too high (thank you James) may have merit, but the rest is baloney. The cost to play QV is cheap per round, very cheap. Even at that, it wasn't added onto the $115 price, obviously.

As for the notion that Neal set this up at QV so he could play in his back yard. Why didn't I think of that! There's a golf course right behind my home! Good on ya Neal! If the cost of Neal running this event and doing a huge amount of work, is that we have to play on well manicured courses, with a club house with bar and grill, challenging courses laid out right in a row, golf carts for practice rounds.... tell me again what the problem is? I seem to be missing it.

I've never seen the amount of bashing that goes on for Texas States about any other tournament in the country. I've long tried to figure it out and I just can't. Doesn't matter where it is, who runs it, what the payout is, there is a bunch of complaining. I figure it must be Houston. Now, given the nasty job it is living in this city, I'd think you'd cut us some slack! YAWN! I think I'm gonna go get me a beer, who was that sponsor now?

these courses are 1 of a kind and are definitely worth playing- lots of risk vs reward shots, par 3,4,5's etc.. along with country club amenities!! I think whoever misses this event will regret it, I wouldnt let an arguement about a pullcart stop me from attending the event though. Bender, your "then dont play" response is not good especially with so many spots left to fill. If you are trying to promote the event then you need to keep negative remarks such as that to yourself; I deal with people all the time involved in business development, and have never received that type of response. I think you owe Hemme and Chile an apology.

On behalf of the entire Apache Nation, we offer Hemme and Chile an apology, but not James. We'd never want to offend anyone, well except all those tournaments that payout less than TS does, and all the ones that occur in venues that aren't as nice as QV, and all the tournaments that don't have near the nice artwork that we have, and all the tournaments that aren't in Texas, the greatest state in the Union...

The last 2 years this was a USDGC qualifier and the entry gave all Pro's a chace to qualify. There was a higher value in that regard. If you take away the USDGC spots but keep the same price, you have in effect substituted in the coutry club value. New math or old math, who cares :DBTW those that don't have to pay the high entry really shouldn't worry about it anyways :D

it really depends on the wind and whether or not you want to go for the green on every drive.I've played their twice; once in the wind and lost 5 disc, and once with no wind and lost only 1 disc due to overthrowing the hole. Its a manageable course but upon 1st look you want to run at every single hole, and thats where the risk vs reward factor comes into play.

These unjustified rules are getting kind of irritating. I don't use a cart, but haven't played a round of golf in over a decade without cleats. What's the reasoning against cleats again? Because they don't want to tear up the golf course that ain't a golf course anymore?

tbender

James et al., cleats are ok on the courses, exactly because these aren't active ball golf courses.

(Merrell's are fine as well, Chris.)

However, inside the clubhouse, cleats are strongly discouraged. Bring along a pair of slip-ons, flipflops, sandals, etc.

EDIT: Clarification of "strongly discouraged": Use common sense. If you wouldn't wear them inside your house (wet, muddy, etc.), don't wear them in the clubhouse. :)

Or from Neal:

Cleats Are O.K. -- TxSDGC Golf Courses Are No Longer Used for Ball Golf
We keep getting this question: Are we playing around the ball golfers? No. QVCC is only maintaining 18 holes (one course) of ball golf at the current time. The areas we are using will be nicely mowed but are no longer used for ball golf. There is absolutely no presence of ball golfers and no necessity to be overly cautious about the greens. In fact, a few of our baskets are set right in the middle of the old greens. Any kind of shoes are allowed and cleats can be helpful if it rains (but it NEVER rains at States! :)). And, obviously, please change out of your cleats or golf shoes when you enter the indoor areas bring something casual to throw on.

Couple more questions:
1. Will all three courses be open for practice rounds on Friday april 4th? or will the Links course be the only one open and just for doubles play?

2. Will there be a disc retrevial effort after the tourney? I saw the list you have currently online, and worry about losing some of my more prized discs for good. I know that I should be judging the risk/reward of each shot, but you never know when that next awful shank/gust of mean wind is gonna come.

3. My brother registared and payed already, but there is a 50-50 chance he won't be able to come, if he is unable to make it, will he have a chance for some kind of refund?

From the Casa de Cordoniz Real:

Couple more questions:
1. Will all three courses be open for practice rounds on Friday april 4th? or will the Links course be the only one open and just for doubles play?

The courses are set up for practice already and have been for over two months. If you are asking if baskets will be placed on all three by Thursday, we are not sure yet. Definitely by Friday on most holes. Of course the LINKS is installed with baskets. We strongly suggest you do not let lack of baskets deter you from learning the drives and up-shots before States. There are many players practicing these courses already because they understand the importance of learning the course itself and realize they can practice the last 30 feet (the putt) of any hole in world in their back yard. These players will have a definite advantage over those who did not come out because of lack of baskets. The LINKS will be open for practice simultaneous to Doubles play.

2. Will there be a disc retrevial effort after the tourney? I saw the list you have currently online, and worry about losing some of my more prized discs for good. I know that I should be judging the risk/reward of each shot, but you never know when that next awful shank/gust of mean wind is gonna come.

Yes, we will be doing a major disc retrieval effort starting immediately after States. We are working out liability/insurance issues with QVCC at this moment to determine the exact nature of the effort. The retrieval effort will be multi-faceted and will include some combination of scuba, raking, dredging, and wading. A list will be published and we will arrange to get all found discs back to the owners. In addition, some key areas will be pre-netted to provide instant retrieval.

The LINKS has 15 holes with water but a 44 (Matt Odenwelder) has already been shot on that course. Granted Matt is a very good player, but the point is its not an extremely difficult course. If the average player throws very conservatively s/he can still finish around par. If you decide to challenge every hole out there you will lose some discs and blow up your score. Yes, these courses require serious and constant risk-reward decision making and we recommend unless youre sure, lay-up or bail out to a safe area. Part of decision making is using a substitute disc in place of prize plastic for some shots. Pack extra discs that you are not too worried about losing and you will probably make a better throw because you wont be as stressed over losing your disc. Also, you may want to get a few floating discs and practice with them. They work and are stress free.

3. My brother registared and payed already, but there is a 50-50 chance he won't be able to come, if he is unable to make it, will he have a chance for some kind of refund?

Refund policy: Must contact by email or phone either TD Neal Dambra (ndambra@comcast.net, 281-851-8872) or Registrar Tony Bender, (txsdgc.reg@gmail.com) by 10 pm Thursday, April 3 for a full refund (minus online charges).
Cancellations after that time will receive a 75% refund if event does not fill (216 players).
There will be no refund if event fills and the spot goes unplayed because of the players late cancellation (after 10 pm Thursday, April 3). If the spot is filled by a wait list player the 75% refund policy will be in effect.

FINAL Golf Cart and PULL Cart Policy
2/21/2008
First of all, thanks to David Gentry and the PDGA Rules Committee for addressing your questions. Here are the rulings. If you need more details about these rulings, as per his request, contact David Gentry, PDGA Tour Manager directly at tourmgr@pdga.com / (706) 261-6342.
May a player rent a cart individually: No
May a caddy drive a cart: No
May an entire Division use carts if the other divisions don't: No
May I or my bag sit in a cart rented by a spectator while it is not moving: Yes
What is the penalty for being (or a bag) in a cart while it is moving: (1) Courtesy Warning (2) DQ
Can staff use shuttle carts in the final 9 as long as an entire division has same shuttle: Yes
What about a medical exemption: Any players requesting a medical exemption will need to contact the PDGA Tour Manager directly and present supporting evidence from a certified medical professional.

Pull carts are not allowed for ball golfers or disc golfers at any time. This is a 37 year tradition/policy at QVCC and there will not be an exception made in time for States. While ball golfers have the option of a motorized golf cart, we do not because the PDGA will not allow us to use motorized carts by players or caddies unless everyone has equal access. This is practically not possible due to cost and supply. Please plan on carrying at TxSDGC this year. Thanks for your upcoming sacrifice (bag carrying), and your continued support and participation at TxSDGC.

imagine that no pull cart rule so the customer will either have to go golf somewhere else or have you PAY for a motorized cart. good way to upsell . Keep up the good work Houston and I hope your event is a GREAT one but I think I will be skipping this event and wait for it to be back at Bass or where there is not more RULES being enforced by the location of play then the PDGA..

801.03 Excessive Time
A. A maximum of 30 seconds is allowed to each player to make a throw after:
(1) the previous player has thrown; and,
(2) the player has taken a reasonable time to arrive at the disc and mark the lie; and,
(3) the playing area is clear and free of distractions.

B. A player shall receive a warning for the first excessive time violation if observed by two or more players of the group or an official. The player shall be assessed one penalty throw for each subsequent excessive time violation in the same round if observed by two or more players of the group or an official.

ching_lizard
Mar 25 2008, 02:26 PM
yeah...I'm guessing that using an electric cart for practice rounds on Friday is cool provided that Quail Valley hasn't already rented them all out. (highly doubtful)

Most of us have been renting carts for the Sunday morning Commando Mini. It seems to save a ton of time. 3 hours walking, 2 hours riding carts.

So we can rent carts on Friday? Cool.

From the man behind the curtain:

A limited number of golf carts will be available Friday, April 4. Carts will be $15 (one or two people) for the duration of your practice rounds. Please return carts as soon as possible so that other players can rent them. (Example: do not park it by bar/restaurant for several hours). Remember, the ball golf members have cart priority; if you see a bunch of carts parked out front, and you are told there are none available, do not take it the wrong way...it is because the Pro Shop knows who is coming in for Ball Golf tee times and they need to reserve carts for those ball golf members when they show up. Bottom line, plan on walking and if you happen to get a cart think of it as a bonus.

However, QVCC is waiving greens fees on Friday, April 4, for registered TxSDGC players/staff. You must still check-in at the Pro Shop but there will be no charge for practice that day.

Friday Check-in for the tourney is from 2pm-8pm. I know we'll be running around the facility prior to that, but I won't know if we'll have tourney HQ setup until then. I'd like to think we'll be setup earlier, but I can't guarantee it.

Atlanta Open - ~60 pro players from 9 different states (1 from TX!!)
Texas States - ~20 pro players from 4 different states (I still count Jay and Des as Texans!)

Both are A-Tiers

The highest rated MM1 in Atlanta is 939 (19 total players)....the highest rated MM1 in Houston is 965 (33 total players)...the average MM1 rating is almost 10 rating points lower in Atlanta vs Houston.

Is it payout? I'm just wondering why one region of the country plays up while the other plays down???

I'd call them Iowans but nevertheless. Those stats are skewed. Texas is bigger both in size and population than Georgia.

Texas - 20.8 million people
Georgia - 8.1 million people

Texas - 268,820 square miles
Georgia - 59,425 square miles

Therefore more people can travel the same distance and stay within the same state to play a tournament in Texas whereas more people from different states can travel the same distance to play a tournament in Georgia.

Also there isn't really such a thing as playing down. The PDGA rules dictate where a player can play. Playing within the rating isn't playing down.

My guess is that people don't play up in Texas because the players are too good in Texas. If you play up without being ready you'll likely get your lunch handed to you. Of course, I'm a bagger too.

I can tell you! I just moved to Georgia and have played many Texas tournaments. After being in GA for three months I can tell the mentality of the players here are COMPLETELY different than the players in TX, OK and so on.

Reason #1 for the counts of players being skewed is that the courses are very different which actually makes it easier to be a competitive pro in the south. TX is about big arms in big open parks. Many of the courses I have played in the south are very tight with lots of pine trees. A 950 player isn't as intimidated in the south because in the woods everyone throws about the same distance. In TX and OK there are alot of players that won't move up because they are intimidated by seeing the likes of Robbie B and Coda throw a disc 600 ft. A player that can only throw 320 feels like there is no chance in hell they could ever compete with these guys. That is why the ADV fields are loaded while the Pro fields are low in TX and OK.

Here in GA everyone just throws it hard as they can and a tree usually ends the flight. So even though I am a 1000 rated golfer the 950 golfer can play in the woods and keep up in distance. It's not as intimidating to a GA golfer because the main reason that the 1000 rated golfer will prevail is because I am better putter or have a good short game. Those aspects of the game to a 950 player is something they feel like they can get better at.

It used to be so frustrating trying to get Open players in OK and TX and I couldn't realize why the Adv pools were always at least twice as big, but being in the South for a little while I am starting to understand some of the reasons.

The money was ALWAYS GREAT in Houston so that's not the reason.

<font color="red"> Wish the answer was that easy here in St. Louis! </font>

Had a chance to zip over &amp; have a look at the courses yesterday for the first time. (the Links with baskets and Quail Valley w/o baskets...I have seen the King Quail previously at the tourney last Jan.)

My first impression at that time was that this is a fantastic venue for us &amp; thanks to all the local players and especially Neal for stepping up and dancing through the political hoops and persisting throughout all the potential roadblocks in bringing us this amazing place to play.

This really is a great opportunity to show off our sport.

A few observations for first timers:

The courses wind through nice suburban neighborhoods. Plan ahead to use restroom facilities as the nearest tree is usually not an option.

The food at the clubhouse is good.

I was pleasantly surprised at the value &amp; pleasure of having a cart to tour &amp; play the courses. I would play here regularly if I lived closer.

The staff I had contact with treated me so well...as if I was a founding lifetime member.

Saw a BIG snake. (no gators yet...maybe next weekend) Watch your step!

The courses are good. Tough. We should see quite a bit of scoring spread on many of the holes.

The Links course lived up to its reputation and cost me 2 discs. While I'm no fan of losing plastic I found this to be laid out in such a manner that it will reward good shots and punish bad shots. (it was very windy when I played it-both discs were lost due to poor throws not bad hole design)

Clear maps and accurate distances - thanks.

I saw Neal working on tourney stuff and going over one of the courses with an on-course official preparing for next weekend. I can't imagine how many hundreds of hours have been worked bring this tournament together. Lets try to build on this foundation and make the organizers look good...it could help build bridges towards even greater things as our sport matures.

Dixon: Yes, Neal and Christian have been working on shuttle plans. Getting full details now.

Matt: We want everyone to play as many holes as possible.

Atlanta Open - ~60 pro players from 9 different states (1 from TX!!)
Texas States - ~20 pro players from 4 different states (I still count Jay and Des as Texans!)

Updated, now up to players in open divisions from 8 different states, (plus another Am from OH for a total of 9 states representing at TX states).

I have a rake you can carry with you... As long as it's near the edge and you have an idea of where it went in, it's pretty easy to rake them out. However, I do request pictures of all pros on there bellies fishing for their lost discs (could make quite the '08 scrapbook.)

Miles, we'll let you watch the game so long as Kansas is winning but as soon as UNC gets ahead by more than 5 pts you have to watch from the back porch.

Spent the last couple of afternoons painting 10m circles on the links, let me know if I did a good job or not; I'm really starting to feel uneasy about not getting to throw much this weekend. Well at the very least I hope to get to call a couple of Rec players on rules violations. Watch your minis and your foot faults if your in the lower divisions guys! I'm amped up to do something this weekend, even if it just means telling someone they need to retake that great shot they just made. POWER is just too much for some of us to handle :)

Neal never gets on the message boards (or so he says) but be sure to thank him, and the numerous others that put so much time into putting a great States together this year. I'll be sure to make a thank you list and have it on the TexasStates.org (txsdgc.com) website after the event. I also plan on having Saturdays results readily available on the website for those that want to know exactly where they stand before Sunday.

Wanted to mention one other thing. I was a bit disappointed initially in the amount of mowing/grooming on the courses, but I have spent a good bit of time out there the past few days and believe that this is a perfect example of why disc golf is a more environementally sustainable sport than its older brother. We (as disc golfers) usually prefer courses that are closer to the state that nature would have them (if left alone) than ball golfers ever would accept. That being said; take the time to admire the beauty of the wildlife, flowers, and rolling hills of the QVCC courses while you're out there. Nothing better than a natural high...

Thanks Chris, I was about to post my version/description of the weather and expected front line moving through the area on Friday and it would not have been as informative. It's not like the wind is going to scare anyone away at this point...

However, at closer review, your analysis left out the most important portion of the forcast; the freaken wind speed... But not to worry, the anticipated wind speed for Saturday is mild:

Saturday, April 5
Wind Dir N Speed 8 to 10

Hell...that isn't windy...it's just like a typical ol' day in Round Rock. :D

20-25 seems to be the "usual" conditions out there lately.

One more time on the shirts. Collar only? Cant be a nice moisture wicking with no collar? I saw once about 1" collar. These are like 1/2"

Dress code: "Proper attire is required for all players. Shirts or blouses with collars , golf or walking shorts and slacks and skirts (for women) are considered proper attire.

Thanks for cooperation and support of the traditions of QVCC.

should I bring extra collared shirts? Might be able to make up for lost disc money wise.

sounds like my homies are having a good time. El chile and Joe said they are headed to the course to play 1 more round prior to the rain. GOOD LUCK TO ALL THE DRAGONS IN ATTENDANCE maybe next year.

BTW, there are some really sweet TSDGC performance golf shirts in the Pro Shop. I suggest anyone needing a nice shirt, check those out. :D

Quail Valley being more on the Southwest side might not see the worst of the rain.

I'd keep playing. I don't think the heavy stuff's gonna come down for quite a while."

nah...piece of cake. We played 2 out of the 3 courses before the rain started coming down. We ate lunch at the Grill after checking in. Very tasty food at the grill.

With the first blast of wind, you could feel a 20 degree temperature drop. It is expected to be brisk in the morning.
