MTL21676
Nov 28 2007, 06:03 PM
actually this will not be a RADL event.
It will be run by myself and JJ.
We will play one round at Buckhorn and one round at Kentwood on Saturday and then on Sunday one round at Zebulon and the finish things up at Cedar Hills.
This will be a unique event and the payout will be amazing. Don't want to spoil to many suprises, but am thinking right now that giving away three baskets and adding over 1,000 to the pro purse.
You will NOT want to miss this event.

Nov 28 2007, 08:16 PM
Now that's going to be a must play for pro's considering the payout (Maple Hill). Bummer that wasn't thought of in the planning, considering the obvious impact and consistent turnout of Cackalacks to the Massachusetts disc Mecca. Plus a huge payout for pro's!

Sadly when I chose this date, I was unaware of the NT up north.
There are many great events in NC that I had to schedule around as well plus we knew the event needed to be in the summer due to the travel time between rounds.
I trust that once open players see all the money that I will have for this event, they will soon see that it is much smarter money wise and stay for the RDGC.
I hate to have a conflict with such a great event, however, this day and age in disc golf, no matter the weekend you pick, you are always going to be overlapping a great event somewhere.
MTL21676
Nov 28 2007, 10:55 PM
alrighty....heres one of the surprises and an incentive to play this event.
No and I repeat NO profit will be made for this event. EVERY penny of profit made (and most tournaments with amatuers make between 400 - 700 dollars of it) will be put BACK into the tournament.
This event will be all about the players. Trust me as someone who has been on both ends of tournaments, tournaments like this are rare - the payout will be HUGE with this idea I have.
This will be an event that in 2009 people will be looking at 2008 results and being amazed that they didn't play it last year.

Boo on the date.
I certainly understand anyone that heads up to play an NT, but as John Biscoe pointed out, you can't seriously expect any TD to not schedule an event b/c another event is happening 8 states away.
I know of at least 2 golfers who were planning on going to the NT that are now sticking around in Raleigh for this event.
I am certainly not trying to take away from what Steve is doing / has done up North, but I want this event to be very well attended and successfull.
I promise, as stated before, once everyone starts seeing how much money will be in this event, everyone will see that sticking around down south will be a much smarter financial decision.
However, no matter which event you chose to play this weekend, remember to have fun and play your best!

Can I ask why you guys are only allowing 90 players with four courses used?
Golfin' with fivesome is brutal most of the time. With four courses being used, I would of thought the idea of threesomes on two courses would be more appealing to most.
Is it a staff issue? Obviously 90+ would make an amazing pot even BIGGER! Just curious.

It is a great question Mike.
Yes, it is a staff issue. Currently, everything is being done by myself and JJ. We are on the phone each night discussing stuff and bouncing ideas off each other. I don't see how with just the two of us we could do 180.
I understand why people would want it to be larger and I do. However, starting at 90 leaves room for growth!

Apr 29 2008, 12:41 PM
random thought/question (and i dont know exactly how tourney math works so please take that into consideration)... if you were to expand and had 80 more sign up then wouldnt that be ~$3000 extra in the budget that wasnt there before?
could you then find a couple people to pay a couple hundred each for the weekend to run the other course?
I assume theres a reason why this doesnt work and its why more people dont do it but just a thought/question.

its a good thought Stack.
However, we currently have 88 spots left (read as JJ and I are the only ones who have pre-registered at this point).
I really feel that keeping this tournament at 90 for the first year is the best option for JJ and I. Now if we see a very large demand and the thing fills very quickly and then people are really excited next year (which I know will happen), I will look into options of expanding it and how I can do that.
The important thing is the 2008 version of this tournament will have 90 very lucky players.
I would advise mailing me a check or paypalling (as soon as it is up) ASAP to assure yourself a spot.
You don't want to miss this.

Stack,
I like the way you are thinking. The only down side that I see to your idea is that the average disc golfer would be thrown into a major tizzy if some of the profit were used to pay someone to work the event.
For a great example take a look at the 2007 Tupelo Bay thread. All entries and added cash went back to the players. Yet, someone refused to understand basic tournament math.
Can y'all imagine what would happen here on the DB if TD's started keeping 15% of the money from a tournament as compensation for their time and efforts? The DB would be shut down from the volume of traffic from the players that believe they didn't receive everything that they feel that they are "entitled" to receive.

I dunno brother, the most unsafe place to be at last years Alamance on the long hole at well spring was behind me. Thats where I hit myself, really. On the long hole from the Pro Pad, I put all into it, hit myself in the head, fell, roled, disc landed 80ft to the right and behind even further. It was Hilarious. Was by the trees to the right of the pad. Not much of a Gap, but I found one after I finished laughing.

i hear ya Kirk... just curious if it could work logistically (not thinking/worrying about the complainers) on paper. It seems like there are a few examples where tourneys top out @ 90 bc of lack of staff and I wondered if this would be a viable option.
i def. wouldn't complain if I knew the TD was keeping some of the $ for running a tourney... to me that would mean that he is even more vested in trying to make sure that things go great and I have a good time and want to come back next year. It would be nice to know that up front but would understand if the TD didnt disclose this. It could also be an incentive to raise enough money to offset that $ as well.
I'd like to think that this might be the future of sorts... individuals (promoters) traveling around and running tourneys where they pay the local club a certain %'age of the profit or pay a course use fee but the person can actually make a little bit of money off each tourney... enough to at least drive to the next one ;)
the idea of paying someone aside... do tourneys ever 'spot someone the tourney fee' for helping on that scale? i would think that would/could work as well.

MTL21676
Apr 29 2008, 02:58 PM
I am in favor of a TD keeping money, however, I personally will never do it. I am a 100% volunteer.
This is where the idea to put the money we make BACK into the tournament came from.
JJ and I were thinking about running this tournament and I asked what we were going to do with the profits. The past tournaments I have run, the money has either gone to charity or gone to a club.
This is when we decided to put all the money back in the purse.
I am also kind of doing this to show lots people how much money is made and can be made by running a great tournament. The payout is going to be sick and you better believe I will post how much profit is made and where it is going.
I really would like to see more tournaments adopt this format, however, most tournaments are ran by clubs and this is not an option the club is interested in and rightfully so. But as an individual with a great job, I don't need that extra money and will get more out of making the tournament have a larger payout then keeping it for myself.
Also, any extra profits we aren't anticpating (i.e. disc sales the day of, random donations, people putting in three or four extra bux to comver something from thier payout etc) will be put in the pot for next years tournament. So if you lose your star wraith at Buckhorn in the water, buy one from me and call yourself a sponsor of the 2009 Raleigh Disc Golf Championship.

Yes we would like to eventually use two courses as long as we had the staff. But as MTL previously stated, we are going with 90 players this year. Honestly, I'm not a fan of fivesomes either. However, I do feel that limiting the inaugural RDGC to 90 is the least complicated way to a successful tournament. I didn't see it but he told me about it and let me know he aced it and I couldn't reach it. It was just really funny to me.
But I went back to his house that night and we played basketball on an 8 ft. goal and I dunked on him.

entry fees that are mailed are considered by their post mark date.
entires given to me in person are considered the day the are given to me.
paypal entries BEFORE 5 PM are considered that day
paypal entries AFTER 5 PM are considered the next day.
should we have more entires that spots, the day that happens all entries that day will be put in a hat and names will be drawn.
The same process will take place for the wait list.
This is the only truly fair way to handle this situation should it arise.

The TD for the event, Steve Dodge, and I have been disussing a way to cross promote our two events since we are on the same weekend.
We agreed the best way is to sponsor each other! I'm sending him merch from my tournament and he is sending merch from his.
This is a great thing I think as neither of us wanted to have our event on the same weekend.

You should just offer sponserships to any OB not just water.
That would increase the number of opportunities by a significant amount
KW has OB that could come into play on holes 1,2,3,4,and 9.
CH has OB on holes 7,8,9,11,and 16.
Zeb has OB on holes 1,2,3,6,16,17,and 18
Bucky has OB on holes 8,9,10,11,15, and 17
Of course there are a few more holes that OB can come into play but the probability of that happening is very small.

you gonna mention @ the playa's meeting to make sure people mark something special for going OB in the water vs other OBs? plankeye has a point.
if someone sponsors a hole and circles their score to help their cause or not circle others on other peoples holes is that considered marking the scorecard 'wrong' and to be penalized?
i like the idea of these types of sponsorships but can potentially see issues (and yes I agree that it would be sad if someone went to those lengths to try and win a disc... but i've seen people do much worse for much less)
and nice pick scotty! There were @ least 6 thrown in from the card I was on @ the crosstown alone!

Oh yes Stack, I remember since I was spotting :)
As far as the OB, if you see it on the card, its a good chance that a hole only has one OB (not always, but a good chance).
Just off the top of my head, only two of those holes with water OB have any other OB...hole 3 at KW would require you to turn around and throw it backwards, and hole 2 at Zeb, well, 1) I've never seen anyone throw it in the road (though I'm sure some enterprising soul has managed) and 2) that hole is much more likely to win a "least # of OB strokes" prize.
Now, it is possible to be dry but OB on holes 1, 2, and 6 (at Zebulon) b/c of the string on all 3 and the creek-and-beyond aspect of 6, but whichever way MTL wants to deal with those is up to him, and fine by me. Besides, Cedar 7 and Buckhorn 10/11/15/17 are the most likely candidates, and 10/11 are less likely w/o insane wind.
That being said, someone's gotta pick the darkhorse, especially on Derby Day, so I'll take 6 at Zeb if it's still up for grabs.

Ok, it's time to let the cat out of the bag. Here is the BIG surprise about this tournament.
This years tournament will feature a layout NEVER played before. The Buckhorn All Star Layout.
JJ and I talked about it and we will not play the longs or the shorts, we will play the best hole each hole. To me, Buckhorn is a great course from both layouts but some holes just are better from a different set of tees.
Please note some of the holes (like 5, 7, 14, and 18) the holes we picked were merely for score seperation reasons. We feel this par 55 layout will minimize some of the holes and shots that players (and we) don't like and give us an opportunity to play a great course for the openning round. Also this shorter layout will speed play up some what. After lots of debating, this is the layout we agreed on.
Long 1
Long 2
3 (one tee)
Long 4
Short 5
Short 6
Long 7
8 (one tee)
Short 9
Long 10
Long 11
12 (one tee)
Long 13
Long 14
15 (one tee)
Short 16
Short 17
Short 18
We understand that some holes (like 6 and 18) are great holes from the longs, but we feel this is the best layout for this tournament.
Everything will be marked clearly and we are super excited to play the new Buckhorn All Star Layout!!
MTL21676

MTL21676
May 13 2008, 11:39 AM
Yes, adv. and open will play the all star layout.
Just to clarify.....
All pro divisions and advanced will play the all star layout.
All other divisions will not - they will play the shorts.
As for the players pack, it will be a voucher to the store. Not sure as to how much, probably in the 20 dollar range.

MTL21676
May 13 2008, 02:21 PM
First off, I knew at some point people would disagree with some of our decisions and I don't mind explaining any of them. So if you disagree or are curious about the holes we picked, feel free to post and I will explain.
This was one of the holes where JJ and I had the most debate. I really wanted short and he really wanted long.
I feel that the long doesn't provide nearly as much score seperation as the short. There are not nearly as many dueces as you think from the longs - my guess is in a pro field, 10 players scores would be 2, 2, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 4, 4, and one other where as from the shorts I expect to see 5 2's 3' 3's and two others.
The short is a very techinical little shot that people can get very greedy with. I have always liked the idea of a touch shot from the short tee and anything high seems to always be about 30 - 40 long.
JJ and I discussed it and we felt that overall the shorter tee (esp since we just played 1 - 4 long) was the better option for this hole, mainly for score seperation reasons.
Also, we in some ways wanted a good blend of holes. I knew going in that we def. use 16 and 17 short, but I could make a case for every other hole using the longs on. At that point, it is pointless to play 16 blues and 2 whites - why not just play all blues if you are going to do that? So we came up with we thought were the better short holes and used those.
Of the 15 holes with multiple tees, we were in 100% agreement on 11 of them. 5, 7, 14, and 18 had the most discussion. I wanted S5, S7, S14 and L 18. JJ wanted L5, L7, L14 and S18.

any data to back this up? i dont see how shortening this hole creates more score seperation. you bring a 4 into the equation which is not there from the shorts.
personally i dont think pros should play a 200 ft downhill hyzer... they can do it later at kentwood #15.
but hey, its your tourney and your opinion
MTL21676
May 13 2008, 03:01 PM
No I don't have data - that is why I started that phrase with "my guess".
My guess is an educated one, one that comes from years of playing the course.
And in some cases shortening a hole and /or making it easier makes it have much more score seperation - hole 17 at the horn is a perfect example of this b/c everyone lays up from the longs and there is big split of decions from the shorts.
I knew that not everyone would agree with every single tee we picked. However, this is what we are playing and I think a majority of the people may not like which hole we picked here and there but as whole like the layout better than all longs and / or all shorts.

i agree, thats why i said shortening that hole not any hole. however, comparing short 17 to 5 would be quite a stretch.
MTL21676
May 13 2008, 03:42 PM
I agree that 5 to 17 is a stretch - that was more or so an explination for those who wouldn't understand why shortening a hole could make it better.

Kentwood - no longs. Pitch and putt shoot out baby. I understand this is not the best course in the world, but we had to play it to get the 4 rounds 4 courses theme.
Zebulon - A few holes have some alt pins that pretty much only locals see. For the tournament, it will be the same layout everyone always plays.
Cedar Hills - yes, the am crosstown layout. Original pin placements, short tee on hole 10. Techinically, this is the "original" layout.

We will have 100 Gateway putters (Wizards, Warlocks and Magics) for player packs and for other things.
The Gateway putters are top of the line and I've heard many Innova players talk about they wish they could use them. The plastic is very grippy and they all give very consistent flights.
Even better is all of them will be custom stamped for this tournament.

Round 1 - Buckhorn - Very technical - lots of long straight shots required. Very easy to have a very bad hole
Round 2 - Kentwood - A pitch and putt birdie fest. A bad round here can put you out of contention quickly
Round 3 - Zebulon - Open and windy - this course will have scores all over the place and works well as a third round course with all the moves
Round 4 - Cedar Hills - A typical NC style course - hit your fairways and you can shoot a good round. 16 birdie chances but anything in the 40s is good. Very easy to lose a lead on thie course and to make a charge.

Absolotly. You need to ask often for a kitchen pass, so you can still see the dg buddies.. A Kitchen pass is approval to leave the house temporarily.
Mini Thumber's married advice-- ;) Go ahead and buy her flowers for no reason, not because it's birthday, anniversary, or anything else, just cuz. I call these Just Cause flowers, that way, when you mess up, and you will, you can remind her of her Just cause flowers. See you're up one.. It's a good bogey

Once you get some time as a married man under your belt, you'll learn how to get more tourney's in. For example, this year I got to Bowling Green, Azalea, Kinston, and a couple more through the summer. To finish things off, I get to go to the USDGC's this year. All it cost me was letting my wife go to Hawaii for 8 days to visit her sister. So just me and my two daughters (2 & 4) for just over week. That'll defitiely get you some brownie points. :D

I suggest to all my bagger buddies, get your registration in now. Only 20 spots left, and based on my conversation this morning, and Last Sun, 4 of those went out yesterday. When MTL begins the Alternate list, you may want to be there early just in case you can get in. To the other grandmasters from Durham, come on guy's. Since you let me win last weekend, I won't call any of you a Bagger this weekend,....maybe.

At Buckhorn, No.
Adv men, Pro Men, Pro Women, and Pro Masters will play the mixed "all star" layout.
All other divisions will play the shorts.
At Kentwood and Zebulon there are only one set of pads.
At Cedar Hills, all divisions will play the longs except hole 10. This is the original layout.

The 87 people represents those paid before 5 PM today.
This is the way the last 3 spots will work.
All Paypals received from now until 5 PM tomorrow will be lumped in with all mailed entries from tomorrow.
If there are 3, those 3 are in, tournament is full.
If there are more than 3, all entries will be put in hat and names will be drawn at random.
The first three get the spots. Then from them on the wait list forms.
If there are less than 3, we move on to the next day with the same idea posted above.
If the situation for a draft happens, I will post the results and will start the waitlist.
