After considerable debate with the PDGA staff, the Texas States Organizing Committee has declined the invitation to join the National Tour in 2007.
The 12th Texas State Disc Golf Championships will be sanctioned as a SuperTour event for both Pros and Amateurs in 2007. We will continue to be a qualifying event for the 2007 US Disc Golf Championships and the 2007 US Amateur Disc Golf Championships.
We look forward to another bigger and better event on March 31 - April 1 in Houston at Tom Bass Park, with top payouts, top attendance and great atmosphere! Details on the event and on-line entry will be posted soon!

I think it is important to understand the main reason(s) why Texas States could not come to agreement with the PDGA:
a. The NT contractual agreement required a 3:1 per person split of added cash to the MPO/FPO divisions versus the MPM-MPG-MPS divisions. This would severely impact the traditional respectable payout to the MPM and MPG divisions, essentially cutting the added cash to these divisions in half from previous years.
b. Texas States plans to offer a limited no. of trophy only options in the MPO and FPO divisions in 2007. This is planned to help fill the Pro fields spots traditionally filled by amateurs in past events. The PDGA would not allow a trophy only option at a National Tour event.
While we are disappointed that the PDGA could not find the flexibility to work with one of the strongest disc golf clubs and an event in the top third of '06 NT events in added cash, we respect the approach the PDGA has chosen, and hope it leads to a stronger National Tour and the marketing vehicle needed to obtain national sponsorship support.

Thanks for the reminder Dawg! :D
We're all buried under doing things for States, The Moffitt Show, State Doubles, etc.
Nez is out of the country right now, so we're probably in a bit of a holding pattern until he returns.
I think I've heard that Gimp had to step out of the role of being the official TD. I know that the flyer was just finished last weekend I think. We should be getting to hit the airwaves with it shortly.
Got lots of special fun activities planned for this year. Can you say "sling-shot?" :D Lyle I know is doing something with speed golf, and we're also going to run a DDC event there. All is looking pretty good at this point...we'll still be utilizing 3 courses.

I would like to see the old tourney course played. Thought it was a better set up, and did not think that the island hole, think it was #2 was fair.

I doubt the Tourny will be the same because they seem to be building some things where a few of the holes used to be. IMO the tourny was the best scoring spread course and it would be nice to have it back. Then again I have hoovered royally on it the past two years so maybe I don't. :D

Hmmm...I can only remember one year where folks were complaining about payout at Texas States...that was one of the years where I tried to experiment with a large players pack. That really killed payout in the lower divisions because most all of all of entry fees were used to cover player pack. (It falls into that "it seemed like a good idea at the time category...)
Masters ought to be as happy as they usually are with MPM payout since we aren't being forced to dump all added cash into Open divisions. The Masters have always been HUGE supporters of Texas States and we weren't about to crap on them for the sake of calling an NT event.
The website is being worked over right now...all I have to go by is last year's website, so nearly all of it has to be re-done. I should have it up by the end of this week - provided I get some quality writing time! :D
I have had several e-mails from folks stating that they've already mailed their entries to Nesbitt's address.

Short memory, my otherwise enlightened Lizard friend.
The debacle (yes, it was a debacle) was forcing the ams to stick around for 6 HOURS to collect their payout.
for those of you that didn't experience the misery, the issue was that the ams finished at about 2pm but those that won anything were forced to wait until about 8:00pm to collect because the TDs wanted everyone to sit around waiting for the last pros to finish, then sit around or watch the top pros,(remember, no shotgun start, everyone has a tee time so that the ams finish first and the pros finish around dark) then sit through the pro's speeches, then sit around and watch the women pick up and put down every frickin disc and shirt in the place before makin their selections, then wait in line with 100 guys to pick through what was left..
Remember how the cops were threatening legal action at 9pm if we didn't haul mass and some of the payout going to have to be done outside the locked gates of the park? I do, since I was "fortunate" enough to win some plastic. On top of that some players had 5 hour drives back to Hooterville and points beyond.
That was a disaster, a TEAM DISASTER
but I'm totally over it..... :D

There are some changes this year that couldn't be avoided, however, Neal D. has come up with an alternative hole, the one right before the Double Island Monster that will be EXTREMELY USDGC like with an "Archie" or two thrown in for fun. Ask Boo P. as he is working on that. And that #2 Island hole, shouldn't be there this year either, but it was USGDC like, placement, isn't it all placement? ;)
Bottomline, this is an event not to be missed. The Sunday round is 24 holes, due to several holes not being available early Sunday morning. Those holes will be used for any tie breakers as they come in.

Based on what I have seen, HFDS has tried to be responsive to comments about things that needed to be changed in year's past. Like am payout being handled earlier so folks don't have to wait around. That should keep the lines shorter and still provide the opportunity to watch the Open Cards play the Dragon and still get on the road at a decent hour without stressing out about payout.
We have always worked hard to provide the best disc golf weekend for everyone, and nothing has changed.
So, sign up and come see what interesting things we do this year.

Well... If the tourney has the tee times instead of shotgun start on Sunday, the tourney will run well into the afternoon. Pray to God you don't get behind the slowest foursome, they slow down everyone teeing after them. Since the best players play last, that scenario is very likely.
the good news is that if you play well enough you will have the late drive home. The bad news is that if you play well enough you will have the late drive home. My advice is to play rec badly, then you can be done by noon!
seeker
Feb 20 2007, 04:21 PM
on the other hand, if there are tee times on Sunday AND you play well on Saturday AND you stayed up too late Saturday night playing TEXAS HOLD'EM - then you have time to sleep it off Sunday morning before heading back to the course.
I am glad to see that ams will be "processed" expediently this year.
This is always a great event and the volunteers work hard to improve it every year.
by the way, an informal pole at the office shows that the "Texas Target" hole is hugely popular and we vote that it stays.
ams will be "processed" expediently this year.

Feb 20 2007, 05:54 PM
As always, tee times on Sunday. Given these are rounds of 24 not 27 as in past years, I am confident that things will wrap up in the timely fashion.
If the last Open card goes out around noon, it shouldn't be that late.
jeterdawg
Feb 20 2007, 06:33 PM
If the goal of tee times is only to showcase the top pros, why not do one of two options:
OPTION 1:
Final 9 for the top two cards or so (only OPEN men and/or women), with shotgun start for everyone for the 24-hole round, say ~8:30 am. That gets the round over with at roughly 1 pm (hopefully sooner), to let everyone grab lunch and be back by 2:30 for the finale. It also allows the staff to get everything processed so that once the final 9 is over (at around 4 pm), everything is all ready to go with awards, etc. I know, I know, some people hate the "final 9" scenario, but it is honestly a much more efficient scenario, with at least the same amount of golf played, and even more exposure to those top pros (for everyone except the bottom rec card). This scenario does the greatest good for the most people.
OPTION 2:
Two shotgun starts...have 12-hole groups start on holes 1-12, and then have an estimated [absolute earliest possible] start time, for when the group that began on hole 1 finishes hole 12. This way the bottom half of each side of the course (West/East) would get to see the pros play. There would be a few more people (in the top half of the fields on each side) missing out on seeing the pros, but these people would likely miss out on quite alot anyway, since in the original tee time scenario, they'd miss at least the first half of the holes already.
OPTION 0:
Leave it unchanged.
My suggestion is a poll to figure out what's more important and favored by the players...options 1, 2, or 0. That way you can head off any complaining, and tell people to vote for the next year! If the concern is to make players happy, while at the same time showcasing the pros, the OPTION 1 is an obvious choice.
Not trying to step on any toes, just trying to speak the mind of traveling players...but whatever decisions are made, they should be very clear to all players on flyers, etc. so that everyone knows what to expect.
Thanks HFDS, I had a blast last year! The only bad part was having to wait until 1:00 or so to start, and getting done after 5:30, when I had to be at an event in College Station at 7:00, and figured I'd have plenty of time to get checked into a hotel and showered and make it on time!

Feb 20 2007, 09:14 PM
All of the suggestions are good and interesting...we'll be considering them for next year. For this year though, we've come up with a plan which I think will work for everyone.
1. As mentioned already, we'll start running the lower Am divisions through the payout line as their divisions finish.
2. To address concerns about there not being a good enough selection to choose from by the time upper divisions get finished, we're also going to be offering an optional coupon redeemable for ordering merchandise payout from Disc Nation. Players will be able to choose from merchandise at the event, and obtain a coupon to select their merchandise from Disc Nation.
3. We are dropping Sunday's rounds down to 24 holes versus the old 27 holes. I estimate that this change alone ought to give us an additional hour back.
With the planned changes for this year's event, Am payout shouldn't be an issue.
In defense of last year's event, it was the first time that we had run Texas States in the springtime, and none of us had any idea that sunset would be arriving as quickly as it did. At Tom Bass park, they close the park at sunset regardless of how many hours of daylight there are...so we got ourselves into a big bind there. We are very sorry that it happened, and we hope that we are addressing this issue in a satisfactory way.
I have visited with two hotels seeking a special rate from them, however none of them are willing to give us a deal better than $69 per night. That doesn't sound like a very good deal to me...but we are continuing to seek out a better deal that won't put our players at risk by having them stay in a high-crime area or establishment. It's likely we'll be publishing a list of hotels, their rates, and how far they are away from the Tom Bass courses and let folks make a choice themselves.

FYI - last year I started building a cart to raffle off for Texas States as a fund raiser. Well, this year I finished it off and I am going to have it out at the Moffitt Show this weekend selling tickets. Tickets are $1 a piece or 6 for 5 bucks. Those that have seen my carts usually think they're... unique. :D
The cart is wood with 10 inch wheels.
It holds approx. 17 discs (depending on the size of the disc). It has a box for holding deet, towles, pencils etc. There is also a card/pencil holder on the side and I will mount a water bottle before this weekend. The handle and wheels break down so it can easily fit into any trunk for transport. I will post pictures by Thursday (I am putting on the last coats of paint now). Color is black with yellow trim. Wieght approx 23 lbs.

Yes, flex doubles on Friday. Tony Bender will be handling that.

I don't have cost, but will post it as soon as I can confirm numbers.

Second Annual Texas States Speed Golf Tournament.
I am running the second annual mini speed golf event at Texas States (can you call it the second annual if no one came to the first annual?)
I ran this event last year for 18 holes and no one came. So this year I'm changing the format and positioning.
The event will be on Friday March 30th at 3:00 running till 5:00. The course will be ten holes, essentially the outer holes from the Powel and Tourny courses around the loop. for those that have maps:
Hole 1 = 15 Tourny
Hole 2 = 9 Tourny
Hole 3 = 10 Tourny
Hole 4 = 16 Powell
Hole 5 = 17 Powell
Hole 6 = 18 Powell
Hole 7 = 1 Powell
Hole 8 = 8 Powell
Hole 9 = 13 Powell
Hole 10 = 18 Powell
I will be running the event out of Tournament headquarters with the finishing line being at Tournament headquarters. The cost is $10 per entry.
I am adding $100 to the pool so, if as last year, no one shows up, all you have to do is come and walk the course and take home $100! Sweeeeet.
Here are the rules:
1. Players will be spaced out at 3 minute intervals. (I will give each competitor at least 3 minutes separation and more if there are fewer entrants)
2. There will be a starter and each competitor will be timed from start until they cross the finish line.
3. Each competitor will be assigned a number that determines their start position and that will be used to track them, and their strokes through the course.
3. On drop-ins you don't have to release the disc, only touch two chains, however, the stance must be legal, i.e. no falling putts! (a falling putt is a stroke as per the rules)
4. In the event that a player catches another on the course the player who caught the other (hereafter known as the out player) has the hole. The out player must clearly call fore before driving. The in player does not have to yield the hole, he simply has to avoid getting hit by the drive. In the event that the in player interferes with the thrown disc (is hit) he will receive a one stroke penalty. It is the duty of the out player to make sure the in player hears his call but it is the job of the in player to avoid the hit.
a. If both players approach the basket at the same time, the first player to their disc has the hole, the distance of the discs from the basket does not matter; however, if the players arrive at their discs simultaneously, the out player has the hole. In the event that the first player misses the putt, the second player putts before the first player putts again.
b. If both players approach the Tee at the same time, the first player to the box has the hole. However, if the players arrive at the Tee simultaneously, the out player has the Tee.
5. There is no O.B., however, a player can at their own discretion declare a disc lost and re-drive with a one stroke penalty. All lost discs can be picked up and remain in use. (note, this seems like a free pass, it's not, the cost is significantly more than 15 seconds)
6. There is no limit on the number of discs a player can carry (disc management is a skill).
7. Each stroke over par adds 15 seconds to your total time. If you are under par each stroke takes 15 seconds from your total time. The best time wins.
8. You may use the thrown disc as the lie or any disc in your hand to mark your lie, no mini is necessary.
9. There are two divisions, Men's and Women's, cash payout will be according to the PDGA Pro tables.
10. No two-meter rule.
11. A lost disc requires the player to re-drive from the Tee or lie. If the player drives and feels their disc is lost but isn't sure, they should throw a second disc and play it (i.e. take a provisional).
12. This event is on the honor system. Each player is responsible for keeping track of their own score. Scorecards will be located on each Tee sign and scores from the hole before should be recorded there. If a player forgets to score they will be given 10 strokes for that hole. Also, there will be officials on the course keeping track of strokes and any player caught cheating will be disqualified from the entire event.
Two other points to consider:
We will be running this on the outer Powell holes, essentially a 10-hole course.
Second, I am adding $100 cash to the pot and guarantee to pay two deep.

See, we already are going to break our attendance record!
I talked with a number of people last year and they made two comments. 1) I didn't run it out of our tournament headquarters and they couldn't find me. 2) 18 holes was too long.
The 10 holes here is probably equivalent to Moffitt!
Remember Matt alone can come out and jog or walk and take home the cash. BTW - if I only get one participant I will only pay out one deep. I will be running also but it hardly behooves me to donate $100 and take half home with me... :D

Just an FYI, old guys tend to dominate in running events. That's mainly because they're so old they can't go out fast and burn out! This event really emphasizes course and time management. Thinking can save you three strokes worth of time in a hurry!

Last point! atx, if you can get three masters players to do this, I'll split out a masters division. The added cash all goes to open Pro (got to keep my one committed there) but I'll keep your entrys separate and you old guys can beat up on each other. How's that for an opportunity!

Welcome to Texas!
Yes, Texas States is a USDGC qualifier.
The 5 qualifying spots are open to all players who are:
<ul type="square"> In the A POOL*.
Have the best 5 total scores.
Not already qualified for the USDGC.
Better looking than Vinnie. :)
[/list]
*Typically the pool assigments are:
A POOL = all Pro divisions
B POOL = all Advanced divisions
C POOL = the other Amateur divisions
The final pool assignments will not be finalized until we say so -- usually the week of. ;)
The pools will play different rotations.

Possible rope on the state hole and 767 is being broken in half due to construction. The conflicting event is no longer conflicting, last I heard.
Both (or now all 3) are still part of the Tourney course for Saturday and the West 24* for Sunday.

Well i went from 60% to 80% from 30ft about 4 months ago so it is pretty much a check. I actually putted even better at the end of the summer for about 1-2 months but then school started and my game went down a bit.

Considering how the OB was 35ft away from the basket at its farthest point I don't see how you saw these side hill putts(the farthest point was the panhandle). I'm not sure if it was Neal or my dad who came up with the idea but I didn't like it too much tdue to the irregularity of the OB. Also having to go to the drop zone on a missed putt that went OB was a JOKE. Actually we all thought that it had been written wrong but I'm not sure.

Also having to go to the drop zone on a missed putt that went OB was a JOKE. Actually we all thought that it had been written wrong but I'm not sure.
Darn, you may be right, I might of been thinking of the year before... hmmmmm.

That used to be a great hole before you guys roped it off. Before if you went past the basket you had a 30' putt straight down the hill.
How did you get 30ft above the basket? Just throw any disc really hard into the hill(laser beam)and you are pretty much parked.
BTW - I saw Matt play this basket last year, I don't recall no stinkin' laser beam. But what I did see were some awesome and incredibly exciting 30 and 40 foot putts across the face of the hill with harsh consequences for a miss. Very exciting and nerve wracking!

You are! That was the year I had a 10ft puTT with a R-L wind that got under the disc and went about 60ft by. :DYeah that was fun. :D

I already did like 4 mothns ago. Anyway it is just kinda harsh to have a putt hit the basket and role 20ft away OB and then have to walk 100ft down the hill shooting 4.
I agree with you Matt...the drop zone ought to be for the drive-only. If you miss a putt and fly OB, then bring it in-bounds, perpendicular to the state border (whichever direction it might face) and make your putt from there.

Remember that players can also play from the original lie after going OB unless prevented by TD. I'm guessing in this small green area that sometimes a player might want to re-putt from where they just missed instead of where they went out depending on wind?

yeah but the Drop zone was mandatory according to the rule book.

I'm talking about if you change the rule for this year like Ching posted right before me. It seems to make sense and giving players the choice to replay from original lie or where it went out from the green adds to the challenge.

I could've sworn that I'd already explained about the hotel situation...we don't have one.
No hotels are willing to deal right now - I don't think it is just because we're disc golfers either. I think it's because the FEMA temporary housing subsidy is still being paid and so no hotel in Houston is hurting for business. My guess is that it has been a booming year for hotels in Houston.
Rick tried his hand at it too, and he couldn't really scare up anything better than I did - $89/night.
I'd love to see some of the Houston locals step up and volunteer any extra room that they might have. I'll post some stuff up on the hfds.org website and see if we can get any locals to offer up some room.
Sorry folks.

When we were at the Snow Farm last weekend for State Doubles, I couldn't help but notice how many bluebonnet plants were everywhere on Randon's course.
On the drive back, we saw the first few starting patches of wild-flower color starting to come out. Randon told me that they are expecting it to be a bumper crop this year and the timing is looking great for peaking just about the time of Texas States.
Any of you out-of-state players thinking about coming, should plan on giving yourselves enough time to take a short day trip up toward Austin just to experience the splendor of the Texas highway wild-flower show! It's absolutely spectacular, and this year looks to be a good season for the display.

Michael - Each "Pool" has room for 72 players.
All Pro players are assigned into Pool A.
All Adv players are assigned into Pool B.
All other divisions will be in Pool C.
Typically, on the morning of the tourney, we might shuffle a few divisions into a Pool with open space in order to accommodate players on the wait-list if there are any. Typically, this usually means that MG1 or MM1 moves over to Pool A.
Pool B right now, is about 1/3 full. Pool B encompasses the divisions: MA1, FW1, MM1, MG1

Yes that will be okay, if he signs up online, just be sure he brings a copy of the renewal confirmation. It is my understanding that anyone can renew when they check in.
Another reminder, Saturday's lunch is free for all players, and Sunday's lunch will be a fundraiser for TIP, Texans In Peoria. We are trying to raise some money for the girls who make the trip in Sept. That lunch will be $5, brisket/chicken sausage and fix'ns. Please support the girls!

You have the right to play what ever division you feel. I think that more players should try this to see what works for the players of the next division and what does not.

I think you might be able to find something a little cheaper in the area of the Astrodome...I found a couple at $69 per night. There is a LaQuinta over that way too, but some of our guests had some problems there a couple years back.

What's up Larry!!!! Sadly, my body, namely my groin area is mad at me. 15 months have now passed since the original pull.....15 months of limping around. I re-aggrevated it at the Players Cup this year(2006). How i finished and cashed is beyond me. Maybe i really am 1000 rated. :D

I recently picked a couple of these up and really like them, but have found the same problem as with Pro Rhynos - some are stiff, some are floppy. The two I have from last year's States are perfect, so if I can get a hold of any more of these, it would be super-sweet! (16).

I'm not sure if we have any left Geoffry...I think that all of the old inventory was completely sold out or sold to Flyin' High.
I love those putters too, but am keeping mine as wall-mounts! :D
Check with me at tourney time and I'll see if I can scare any up for you. Innova supplied black Aviars for us this year.

My snail-mailed entry should have been there by now ...I'll reregister if it's still not there by Monday's delivery. Have you heard from Mot's in Toronto? He say's he's coming. MPM probably.

It hasn't come in yet Alex. Haven't heard from your buddy in Canada yet either. Just checked the mail-ins this morning and got them posted online, but yours wasn't in this batch.

Actually, I was thinking that was slightly better than usual...most MPOs only sign up during the final week! :D
Still, having the A-pool half full at this point seems about average. There are MANY notable Texans missing from the reg. list so far...Joel, Mace, Schmidt, Judah, Justin, Scooter, and and MM1s of Brenner, GND, Lloyd.
It'll also be unusual if Dave and Avery don't make it this year. I think they've been regulars for the last 6-7 years.

You two not qualifying for the D-contest at the USDGC was just plain silly... Darn headwind ;)
