Just a reminder, We're running a speed golf event out of Tournament Headquarters on Friday afternoon 3:00 to 5:00! $10 entry with $100 added cash. Ten holes around the perimiter of the inner-loop.

That really makes me mad! My kids are still too young for me to go to Worlds so that means I won't be able to run in the first Worlds Speed Golf event! Durn it!
I can tell you that there are a number of real runners out there who play disc golf and a lot of guys in NC who may or may not be real runners who run courses. There are also two models by which to run an event, time and strokes. I use the time model but others use the stroke method. The time method gives equal weight to disc golf and running, the stroke method favors disc golf. So much so, that in my opinion you should just play a round and skip the running. :D Basically, in the stroke method 1 min = 1 stroke. So you add total strokes to total minutes and get your score. In the total time method every stroke over or under par is +/- a given time (I use 15 seconds). So if you run the course in 10 minutes and are 3 over, your time is 10 min 45 sec.
I think Lowe is the stroke method expert but if you want help, one way or the other, I'd be happy to.

I'm open to anyone who would like to put this together. The Final 9 will be set up nicely for spectating in a big loop. I think it would be an interesting side show for spectators while remaining competitors are recovering from the semis, eating lunch and preparing for their Final 9.

Uh-oh Todd...if that's true, then we should probably expect 2.49" worth of standing water out there! :D
I was out there on Saturday morning for a work-detail and although all of the ponds were full, there was only a trickle in the ditches themselves...looked like the ground was sponging up the rainfall very well. Let's hope we get a light rain and not a big one!

I'm telling everyone else that needs to renew their PDGA membership to just hold onto it until Saturday morning. Everyone that is renewing their PDGA membership in the last week or so needs to bring a printout with the online receipt as proof.
I registered two people a bit over a week ago, and although they called me and we got everything straight, their memberships still didn't show up last week. Don't know what the delay is between entering them online and them actually showing up online as being current. Seems like it's about 2 weeks.

OK...just got back from throwin Wilmont...and I was plesently suprised....Yes the skeeters were in full force, but my deep woods off took care of me...infact, the only place I got bit was on my bald head which had sweated all of it off.
Ok....so there is a lot of standing water, but its bearable...infact I was able to finish the round with dry feet!! I also threw a couple of rollers in the deep stuff to test for you roller types and managed to get it off pretty well considering the conditions...hopefully it will get mowed and you will be good to go.
The lettuce is pretty high on holes 1-11 and 16-18 the rest have been mowed down....Im guessing the other holes were to soft to get a tractor out to knock it down.
The biggest problem was how soft the tee's were...only a few holes were packed or dry enough to do an X-step, the rest were just reach back and pull, unless you don't mind a broken ankle.
Lets hope for a dry rest of the week :p

There are limited number of slots in each pool. Basically, Pros are A pool. All advanced divisions are B pool, and C pool has all Intermediate and Rec. divisions.
Each pool can hold 72 players (18holes x 4players) and there aren't any divisional caps within a pool...all 72 slots are up for grabs.
All pools are still open at this time.

We have been known to to move MG1 and MM1 divisions into other pools, but all 3 pools are filling pretty evenly, so there won't be any room to move any pools too, other than maybe the one card of MG1s.
I know that one of the MA1 slots is spoken for by one of our local deaf players who e-mailed me tonight...I'm waiting on confirmation but that might be 2 of the remaining 6 slots in B-pool.

15 of the Tourney holes will be setup today. The other three (Tourney #6-8) are going to be portables -- the basket placements should be marked.
Many thanks to Houston Park & Rec for letting us borrow the MacGregor Park baskets!!!

Just a reminder, if you haven't signed up for the great BBQ lunch we are offering on Sunday, it's not too late.
We are raising money for the Texas Ladies who want to make Peoria in September. Please help us to provide enough support to pay their entry fees and hopefully a little bit more.
It is Smoked Brisket, Chicken & Sausage, Beans, Potato and Green Salad.............all for the small price of $5.00. The guys who are cooking for this, are awesome and donating their time (non-golfers!) :)
It can be paid for Friday, anytime Saturday, and on Sunday, the price increases to $7.
Also, both days we will have breakfast tacos and goodies for sale supporting this same worthy cause.

Yep. The Tourney course is mostly in. I think we need to put up 2-3 temporary baskets on the island holes. The Dragon's lake is all strung. The state of Texas is installed on the hill on Tourney #2.
New pin position is coming up for Willie #14. Think farther back and down the hillside...devious placement is gonna see a lot of folks scoring 6's or higher on that hole this year. Program/scorecards are gonna list it as a par 4, but at WAY over 1,000' it's going to be brutal even at a 5! Good luck folks! :D
I hope to finish getting it all strung tomorrow.
Although there was standing water out there, it seemed like it could be easily navigated around too. In other words, pretty good playing condition. All the ponds are full to the brim though.

About 20-30' straight back from where it sits now.
Straight back = straight back on a line from where most people approach from. Righties are going to get caught on the inside of the ampitheater hill more often and have to approach/putt straight at the wetland.

Where are they moving the basket?
If I didn't know better, I'd swear this almost sounds like whining from one of the biggest arms in Houston! :D
Here's the good news about it Matt, you can't quite see the basket from the #14 long tee! :D
A lot will depend on where you land for an approach. Most of us mere-mortals will land near the base of the hill for a decently easy upshot and then putt. If you land at the base of the hill, you'll be lucky to even see the basket from there. Us righties are gonna find it a treachorously fast green where a miss might roll you all the way to OB-land.
My advice is for everyone to brush up on their rules...if you miss a putt and it kicks OB, you might want to re-putt from your previous lie.

Last call for speed golfers for tomorrow! The course is marked and ready to go. I've got maps and will located next to Tournament Headquarters at hole #15 Tourney! I shaved a hole so we are looking at 9 holes. I'm guessing that's a 15 minute run for an average runner.
Final rules:
1. Players will be spaced out at 3 minute intervals or greater.
2. There will be a starter and each competitor will be timed from start until they cross the finish line. The start and finish lines will be located at the hole #1 Tee box
3. Each competitor will be assigned a number that determines their start position and that will be used to track them, and their strokes through the course. Keep track of your number by clipping it to your clothing!
4. On drop-ins you don't have to release the disc, only touch two chains, however, the stance must be legal, i.e. no falling putts! (a falling putt is a stroke as per the rules)
5. In the event that a player catches another on the course the player who caught the other (hereafter known as the out player) has the hole. The out player must clearly call fore before driving. The in player does not have to yield the hole, he simply has to avoid getting hit by the drive. In the event that the in player interferes with the thrown disc (is hit) he will receive a one stroke penalty. It is the duty of the out player to make sure the in player hears his call but it is the job of the in player to avoid the hit.
a. If both players approach the basket at the same time, the first player to their disc has the hole, the distance of the discs from the basket does not matter; however, if the players arrive at their discs simultaneously, the out player has the hole. In the event that the first player misses the putt, the second player putts before the first player putts again.
b. If both players approach the Tee at the same time, the first player to the box has the hole. However, if the players arrive at the Tee simultaneously, the out player has the Tee.
6. There is no O.B., however, a player can at their own discretion declare a disc lost and re-drive with a one stroke penalty. All lost discs can be picked up and remain in use. (note, this seems like a free pass, it's not, the cost is significantly more than 15 seconds)
7. There is no limit on the number of discs a player can carry (disc management is a skill).
8. Each stroke over par adds 15 seconds to your total time. If you are under par each stroke takes 15 seconds from your total time. The best time wins.
9. You may use the thrown disc as the lie or any disc in your hand to mark your lie, no mini is necessary. However, you must mark your lie. You may not place your foot where your disc was and pick it up to throw. You must mark the lie and then throw.
10. The player records their score for each hole at the Tee to the next hole! There will be a clip board at that Tee where the player can write their score. The final hole is scored at the finish line. Don't forget! The clip board will have the number of the hole you just played written on it, not the hole you are getting ready to drive from!
11. Any hole that does not have a score will be given 7 strokes so don't forget!
12. There are two divisions, Men's and Women's, cash payout will be according to the PDGA Pro tables.
13. The two meter rule is not in force.
14. A lost disc requires the player to re-drive from the Tee or lie. If the player drives and feels their disc is lost but isn't sure, they should throw a second disc and play it with a one stroke penalty.
15. This event is on the honor system. Each player is responsible for keeping track of their own score. Also, there will be officials on the course keeping track of strokes and any player caught cheating will be disqualified from the entire event.
16. The course is 9 holes long, Each Tee box has the hole number painted in orange next to it. Each basket has an arrow pointing to the next hole with the number of that hole.
17. There is $100 added cash.
18. The race is over when you slap the table next to the time keeper located at the Tee for hole #1.

You're correct, first time it's a warning and a reputt, second time it's a stroke and a reputt. For this competition I am making a falling putt a stroke first time. This is simply because it will be very tempting to do it because of the nature of speed golf and I want the competitors thinking about it.
Thanks for the mention and I will give a reminder at the start!

Here's the latest reg. list.
The magic count tonight is 197 registered.
Friday during doubles is the last chance to register for one of the last slots available.
Pool B is closed. There are no advanced division slots available right now and I'm accepting a wait-list.
Pool A (Pros) has 9 slots left.
Pool C (Int/Rec) has 11 slots left.
For any advanced players that might've missed the boat here, my advice is to sign up in the trophy-only division of the MPO field which costs exactly the same amount as the Advanced entry fee. Might get a chance to play with some of the hottest talent out there!

A HUGE shout of thanks goes out to Matt Hall's dad, Lois Hall for the fantastic job he did of mowing grass on many of the Powell temporary holes.
What a treat it was to have a disc golfer do the mowing out there. The lawn-cut follows the fairways, and a nice little path has been cut from the baskets to the next tee box!
Thanks to Steve DuFrane for the lawnmower and for dragging it down to the course for us!

Thanks guys!!!!
That Louis; he's grapping all the course karma.
Glad he has moved up to the really old dudes division.

Weather is looking good for today Friday(as long as you like the wind)... Saturday a front line will move through the area(when is the question), bringing rain and thunder (unless the energy of the front slips north prior to arriving in Houston. The wind will switch out of the North and drier air will prefail. Sunday will be sweet (just sloppy)!

I played doubles with a great guy that we are hosting today (The_Natural) and had a great time. The wind however was another story for my game. If I'm not in that last slot after advanced are finished playing tomorrow, I'll be a very happer non-bagger. BTW, the Readings are some of the nicest pros I've ever met...

The storm is moving over Katy right now... Looking at the radar, the storm seems to have picked up speed, hopefully it will move over Bass quickly.

Yes Bizzle...
The East Course's starting hole is right by the main HQ building.
The West course's starting hole is Wilmont's #1.
All players should report to their appropriate East/West starting hole at their reported tee time. Your names will be called, and each thrower gets to tee off. If the card has at least 3 players show up on time, they will be sent on. We will do our best to merge and patch missing cards together in cases where people are there at tee off time.
Therefore, it is always advisable to get there early!!! :D
Good weather forecast for tomorrow after all the crap we got hit with today.
My Hero would be killing everyone in Open on a day like today! Just his kind of playing conditions.

The weather didn't cooperate with us very much this year. :(
The rain started around 5:30 this morning. Severe thunderstorms. Nice. The phone started ringing with cancellations at 6:30. We continued to get pounded with rain through most of the players meeting.
We delayed the start until about 10:15, sent everyone out, and then had to call everyone back! Crap!
Keep watching the forecast...all night if necessary!!!
Go cold toe go!

I heard the real reason the first round was delayed was that the number one masters player in the world was running late...and all it took was a phone call to the TD :D

Are those round ratings screwy? I can't believe nobody in open busted a 1000 rating in the final round....I'm guessing those ratings were formulated with all divisions together?

On behalf of a whole lot of HFDS Club members that all pulled together to make this happen, we thank you. We are all so pleased that in spite of the weather, everyone had a great time. That is what makes it worthwhile doing! I was only one cog out of the many that made this event tick! (without ticking any players off! :D)

I have a great tale to tell about the final playoff in the Masters division between two guys I like a lot: Jeff "Coop!" Cooper and Zack Walker a first time visitor playing in his very first Texas States after flying in from Arizona.
Jeff had the lead by 4 throws after the first round, but Zack came back with hot round and took the lead by 3 throws after the second round. In the final 24-hole round, Jeff bested him by 3 throws to tie it all up at 184. So it headed into playoff.
I followed the guys out to our announced 4-hole sudden-death playoff course. The Texas hole! Jeff makes an excellent throw about 8' straight down-hill from the basket. Zack hurls a forehand which hyzers out a bit at the end and leaves him laying at about Houston on the state. Zack's now looking at an uphill diagonal shot from 30-35' with a 10mph cross-wind knowing that Jeff has almost a drop-in putt.
Without flinching he canned the putt for a push.
Next hole was to throw from the top of the hill to the basket in front of the lake. Coop goes for basket and misses wide right and splashes into the OB lake 12' behind. Zack throws a rare backhand and his disc goes stable and gets pushed off the line by the crosswind from their right. Zack is short by about 50'. Zack makes his throw almost directly into the headwind, but it's a layup instead of a real putt. He's playing smart strategy forcing Coop to have to sink his putt. I gave Coop is mark on the OB string where his disc went in, and Coop slams one into the chains for an amazing circle-3. Zack pushes.
At the third play-off hole, neither had particularly stellar drives. Both laid up on their 2nd throws and had drop-in putts for par.
The fourth play-off hole was designated to be the Dragon. Unfortunately, Jeff and Zack had to endure a 20-minute delay as they waited for the last two MPO cards to finish.
There were easily in excess of 100 spectators watching all the Pro cards finish their 24-hole round. We had to let some traffic pass and they finally got drive on The Dragon.
Jeff Cooper threw a great drive out over the water which hyzered back and ended up perched in the middle of the thin fairway between the road and the lake. Zack shouted down to me to request that I clear the road for his forehand attempt. It took a few minutes to get the crowd of 60 people to get completely off the pavement so that Zack could drive. He threw a low, bullet forehand straight toward me while I was holding the crowd back. The disc skipped off the pavement and curved right back in-bounds again about 100' further down the fairway than Coop's drive! It was a real crowd-pleaser shot!
Coop decides to risk it all, and makes his 2nd throw for the pin from about 400' out. His backhand into the headwind wasn't quite stable enough, and it hung out over the lake until it splashed down. Zack makes an easy chip-shot forehand around the left (and dry) side of the fairway and Coop's next throw lands about the same distance as Zack's, but he's laying 4 to Zack's 2. Zack wins it after a 4 hole sudden-death playoff! Congrats Zack!

Local Matt Hall claimed the sole ace of the tournament today. He purportedly celebrated by doing a face plant in the mud running to get his disc out of the basket and slid the final few feet on his stomach.
Also of note: the treasure wasn't found...not even by the guys that hid it! Current theory is that maybe the excess moisture out there disolved it...some also theorize that it might've been washed away...but it was never found...not even by the pirates that hid it orginally! :D

Rumor has it that it's now in the Gulf. Years from now archaeologists will find it and claim that it is part of Lafitte's hidden cache.

that is for sure what a tight battle all weekend. Now for the archie bunkers I think they would be great to have at X-Tier events not A-tier. Moffet could use about 36 archie bunkers to make that course more fun... Would be a great idea for the 5 card F your buddy tourney... and on a side note what would the ruling be and how would you play it if you landed on top of the archie bunker????

As someone who was genuinely penalized by the archie bunker, I probably deserve an opinion as much as anyone...
We were driving in Saturday morning, and I saw one and had a pretty good idea of what it was, having no forewarning. I think this is a good attempt at making disc golf more challenging. However I think the appearence makes it seem more like a miniature golf course, and that is not the direction DG needs to head to be taken more seriously. Using natural OB lines (or yellow rope), or natural features (trees, bushes, fences, elevation, etc.) are what gives golf such appeal. The bunkers are too small to do anything but create good-luck / bad-luck situations.
On the hole I got caught on, we already had OB on both sides, and 3/4 of us were OB to the right since we threw wide of two cars that someone left right in our way (who's were those anyway?!?). We all re-teed, and I probably would have had a 4 instead of 5, but was all the way in the thing and had to take a 25' turbo putt.
Conclusion: way to think outside the box. It really is a good attempt at making the course more difficult, but there's too much luck factor. Maybe they'd have been better on holes that were about 450' to 500', so that you had to avoid them on your upshot, which is a shot where you should be trying to aim more precisely.
BTW, this was an incredible event, and I greatly thank everyone who had a hand in it.

RE: Archie Bunkers - they did not affect my play or shot selection but we did all hope that someone (else) would hit one just to see what they did to get out. I think they do add an interesting factor to the holes. Greenville South Carolina (Upstate Classic!) has a hole at the bottom of a hill almost directly behind the basket with a huge hollow trunk that snags a surprising number of discs. to get a legal stance you have to climb into the hollow and throw out. Now that's entertainment that money can't buy!

The "hokey" nature of the bunkers doesn't bother me at all. Just make them bigger, so the fluke factor isn't as great. I will tell you that their presence did make me rethink my flight pattern into the green on two occasions.
How about using a four foot high net, about 15 feet long and set at the proper places, it would serve as a more effective bunker because it wouldn't be as random.
Sue, the Sunday food was really good.
To Larry and Dave and everyone else who worked so hard, thank you so much. It was a great tourney.

I agree with the size of the archie's needing to be rethought. From 400' out, trying to avoid the 3 foot opening isn't on the top of my list. If they were substantially bigger, i could see the benefit. By bigger i'm meaning wider and taller, not deeper. One question that came up on our card...if you were caught in the corner, or really any location, where 30 cm behind your disc in line with the basket took you outside of the bunker, is that a legal stance. By the letter of the law, it would have to be, but that seems to negate the idea of the bunker. Perhaps a special rule for the tourney or making sure that they all line up with the basket so that wouldn't happen.
One other question for the TD's. What was to keep someone from going the "back way" on Wilmont 14 on sunday? It seemed that the ob line started at the box and went west. I saw no string or mando's making me go that way.

The only problem with that is clearing the OB line at the base of the hill.
You would be OB with respect to the basket if you didn't clear the line...and it could be argued you would be throwing from OB at the basket.
(Last year, I think we had it roped off behind the tee to stop that.)

Great Event as always, Mother Nature tried to ruin it, but the Houston Crew is always way too good of a tournament staff that you barely noticed that we were playing golf in a swamp.
Thank you for getting Courtney and I out of town in a timely fashion, we made it home before 2am and there is no way that could have happened without Nez, Larry, SueMac and the rest of the staff being overly prepared.
I've said it before, if we could relocate this staff and event to a more central location in America, the tournament would be one of the hardest to get into, it could rival Bowling Green Am Weekend. Year after year they do an outstanding job of making the event very pleasurable for the players.

I'm a little stunned at the moment because I just checked, and it is not listed on the program and I was handling "other" issues at the time of the player meeting and wasn't paying attention, but I'm pretty sure that Nez made an announcement about having to around the wetlands area on the right. Last year, we explained that there was a mando tied around a tree that was inside the wetlands area where we are supposed to stay out of...:D...and you had to pass that mando on the right/west side.
I was getting a little worn out stringing the course, and I got lazy by not running some of that string completely around the wetlands area. Nevertheless, it has always been mandatory that you pass around that West end of the wetlands on your approach to the hole. No spike hyzers over the top are allowed, nor can you go around it the back way. (Or else even I might card a 3 on it!:D)

MA2 division played the West-24 course like the Pros.
The question that was posed was not about Wilmont 14, but about the dragon hole, especially on the Sunday West layout, where the tee box was back another 40 ft to get fresh footing. I was asked whether you could play it on the other side of the pond, ie in Tourney 4's fairway. I stated that there was nothing presented that would stop you from doing so, but that I would likely warn you for a courtesy violation for purposefully driving into somebody else's fairway, and then stroke you when you did it again on Tourney 3's fairway on your way around the other side.
As it relates to Wilmont 14 the "wetlands" hole, there is a long standing "mando" tree in the middle of the wetlands that you must play to the right of. Since you can't go into the wetlands, you'll just have to trust it is there! ;)
Thanks for the kind comments from all. I was most impressed (as were the sheriffs on both days) on how many stuck it out and played, despite the 90 min start delay prior to the first tee. We did ultimately have 13 drops on Friday night/Saturday morning, and ended up with a total of 190 players.

Thanks for the info. A couple of follow up questions...if I was a new player and the mando wasn't mentioned in the player's meeting, what would keep me from going the back way. About the dragon, i never even thought about it. When the last few cards were coming in, all of the other holes were empty, would you still get stroked for throwing into someone else's fairway if no one was playing that fairway?
seewhere
Apr 03 2007, 09:36 AM
sorry but I dont think you can stroke someone for throwing into their fairway I have been to many tournaments where shots land in the wrong fairways. no courtesy violation or strokes. if it is in the rule book please find me that rule. :p
Think about how many strokes would be handed out @ a course like z-boaz if that were the rule...
Good observation seehorsey!

Best solution is to put a mando on the northern tip of the island.

I can't tell if this is a joke or yet again another example of people making up rules that do not exist.
The part of the courtesy rule that might be applicable states,
Players should not throw until they are certain that the thrown disc will not distract another player or potentially injure anyone present.
So, if a player decides to play down another fairway, absent a mando preventing it, they might have to wait.
I've noticed things during a tournament that I wished I would have done differently such as where to put OB lines, drop zones, tees, basket locations, etc. Once the tournament round has begun, however, we can't change the rules mid-stream.
On the shooting down other fairways issue, at last year's Players Cup we had one goofball (who happens to be a buddy of mine from, ahem, Texas) decide to play the par 5, 13th hole about 45 degrees offline, over another basket and into the middle of another fairway. I wasn't thrilled about it, but there was no mando or OB in place and I wasn't about to invent new rules to stop him from doing it.
I thought about adding a mando for this year's event to stop it from happening again, but after assessing that particular situation, the "alternate" route is clearly inferior and I doubt that other players will deviate from the intended flow of the hole. If I'm wrong, however, we'll make an adjustment for '08, but we will not invent rules in the middle of an event.
An exception to the above, could be in the instance of a significant safety concern that wasn't anticipated setting up the course. In that case I would consider adding a mando and/or OB area to a hole, in between rounds of an event and communicating it to all players prior to the start of their round.

You guys are making these holes harder than they should be! All you need to do for the dragon is throw a Firebird with a slight hyzer 10-12 feet high 5-10 feet out over the water, with a decent amount of power, and let it hyzer back into the fairway. Then throw the same shot again with the same disc, and you should be putting. I know it's not quite that easy to do, but trying to max out distance with a disc that may not come back doesn't help any since it's a 600 foot hole, and requires two shots to get to the basket. If this Am can 3 it last year in the wind, and this year in the rain, then anyone can do it! It was a little tougher this year having to throw in the 4-6" high standing water in the ditch, but somehow it luckily still got across.
As for the Wetlands hole, I'd just keep it out safe away from the OB, and try not to land right behind any trees. Since we didn't play the entire horseshoe, I'm not sure what the back-door looks like, but it would have been fun to watch someone try.

I was not there this year, broken foot, and it seems I missed a good one, but one comment. I saw this happen at PRO Worlds in 2002 and the guy that did it in the final round ended with a drop in par from the route he took. I had been wanting to play the dragon ever since I saw him do that and try the shot myself, but in the last couple of tourneys that I have played there, the MM1 division hasn't had the opprotunity to play the Dragon.
Didn't know that we could not do that, the official during the PRO Worlds never said he couldn't when it was questioned by others in that group.
Now I will rethink this shot IF I get to play it in the future.

In the absense of a mandotory flight path, I'd have to say that throwing to the right side of The Dragon should be legal. As for throwing into another fairway, well, let's just say that I've been known to spray plastic around a course before, and the spraying is punishment enough! :D
Next year, there will be a mando on #14 though...you might even get a glimpse of it from the OB line of the wetlands!

I'm fascinated by the idea that people could just throw over the lake to near 3's basket, and then pitch it over to the dragon's basket. From the normal tee, and with no wind, it is an interesting risk reward. However, from a longer tee and/or high winds, it is probably a safer play.
Larry, I hope y'all call lake and beyond OB on the dragon; otherwise, it would dramatically lose its appeal. It would also really slow play and add danger to players on 2 and 3.
