Here is what is going on... Yours truly will be responsible for setting up and tearing down the temp course for this weekend. I need help. I do not have a truck, nor do I have a trailer. Basically, all I need to do is move baskets . Does anybody have the capacity to help??? Miles has volunteered, but I could really use some more help.... Anybody out there ???? pretty please.....

Thursday Feb. 22 we will be having a Funkytown Flyers Club " pre-meeting " .
Saturday the 24th, hopefully all Flyers and disc golf supporters in the Metroplex will be in attendance at the city of Ft. Worth's Parks and Rec. master planning meeting . I will keep this short and sweet . Gateway park on the east side is accepting proposals for newly acquired acreage adjacent to Gateway Park .
Let us assume for a moment that all goes well at this meeting , what does it mean to you?
Potentially , the city could finance the installation of a disc golf course in Gateway park. Included in the proposal are some disc golf demographics and pricing for course install. The pricing includes, and is not limited to monies allocated for basket purchase, tee pad installation, and most important COURSE DESIGN. Yes, possibly somebody could be paid to design this course..... This is huge ....

The pre-meeting will get everybody in tune with what we are trying to accomplish, and how we will do so. There have been major players stepping up to the plate, and this is the outcome.. We need your support. Please plan on attending .... Time and location to follow...

We will also discuss the land options and go over some info regarding the possibility of the city donating additional land for a start up course , to be managed by the Funkytown Flyers Club.... This also is huge...

Little recap : WE COULD POSSIBLY HAVE TWO NEW COURSES IN FT WORTH . THIS MEETING WILL BE A HUGE STEP TOWARDS ACCOMPLISHING THAT . BE THERE OR BE SQUARE.....

Hey Chris, it is not mandatory that you play Brians events .

Brian should make money, he provides a service to the public. A service which many were not able to utalize this weekend, because the event filled ...... I am sure there will be somebody willing to play in your spot next year.

This was actually my 3rd year to play Open at Zboaz, but thanks for the shout out. :) Bad news= finished 8th, good news = every year I finish 1 spot higher than the previous year...so by my calculations in 7 years I'll get 1st :D I had a great time (despite the lack of skills.) It is so wonderful to play with such great women!

As far as all the negativity being written for all to read, I would just like us to think about the image this is giving our club. We will not all agree with each another and we don't have to all like each other, but let's focus on the future and our goals. There is a city council meeting on Feb. 24th that Gilbert has written a proposal for. We would like to have signatures of support to accompany the proposal. I will print off a sheet for this but we can only have I copy (to provent duplicate names.) We need to figure out how to get the most signatures the quickest...any ideas?

Bring it out on Thursday and Sunday Mini's - Yesterday would have been great.

Take it out to all of the local mini's. Crowley on Tuesday and Saturday, the Z on Thursday and Sunday, Cedar hill on Sat, the Vet Wed and Sunday. I'm sure we can find a way to get it to the right people that will be attending each one. Between those 4 courses there should be close to 70 different sigs you can get. Let me know what I can do to help out.

Challenger is way more stable , and stays more stable than the Aviar.

The Funkytown Flyers Club are in need of some volunteers....

The mission : To collect as many Ft Worth residents signatures as humanly possible ...... This " petition " will arm the Flyers with serious ammunition for the council meeting on the 24th. Basically, we the Funkytown Flyers Club have an oppportunity to make a difference, but we need help.

Signature sheets will be available Friday morning . We need people to spend some time @ Z-Boaz, talking to people entering the park. A quick 30 second convo. with a casual player could not only obtain the signature we need, but possibly help educate the public about the Funkytown Flyers Club , our mission, and disc golf in general. Hell, we could possibly sell some bag tags or memberships... Who knows. If you have any time to donate to the cause , let us know ... We have untill next Saturday to get as many of those precious siggy's as possible ... Thank you for your assistance !

The Funkytown Flyers Club are in need of some volunteers....

The mission : To collect as many Ft Worth residents signatures as humanly possible ...... This " petition " will arm the Flyers with serious ammunition for the council meeting on the 24th. Basically, we the Funkytown Flyers Club have an oppportunity to make a difference, but we need help.

Signature sheets will be available Friday morning . We need people to spend some time @ Z-Boaz, talking to people entering the park. A quick 30 second convo. with a casual player could not only obtain the signature we need, but possibly help educate the public about the Funkytown Flyers Club , our mission, and disc golf in general. Hell, we could possibly sell some bag tags or memberships... Who knows. If you have any time to donate to the cause , let us know ... We have untill next Saturday to get as many of those precious siggy's as possible ... Thank you for your assistance !

I think what would slove that problem is to put in BOLD letters at the top of the page that say something like if you have signed this or another like this then dont sign again. And I think you are a little to worried about it, but I think its a valid reason.

Its a good deal I know! I plan on driving down the morning of and returning the night of, unless someone knows of a FREE place to stay? YOUR DISC GOLF CLUB NEEDS YOU

We , residents of Tarrant county have a large opportunity to expand disc golf in the Metro area.. The Funkytown Flyers Club will be in attendance in next weeks Parks & Recreation Council meeting . The topic will be the new 400 acre masterplan for Gateway Park on the east side of town. With your help, we will have a series of club representatives discuss the Pro's of disc golf in the local community, in front of the council. This is a rare opportunity , essentially, if all goes well, the city will pay for a disc golf course, and it's design . We need people to speak on the topic of disc golf and ALL OF it's benefits. We need people from every walk of life, race, creed, and gender. The city has allocated 3 minutes to discuss whatever we choose . Now, here is where you become involved ... Obviously we can not cover the entire spectrum of disc golf in 3 minutes. But if we have 10 speakers , speak for 3 minutes, the council just heard 30 minutes of the " Pro's of disc golf " in Tarrant County.

We also need dedicated individuals to collect signatures from Tarrant County residents between now and next Saturday.
We have a signature sheet to hand out , we have a brief description of what the signatures are for . We need man power... Please help, the more signatures we can put in front of the council, the more real this can be ... I CAN NOT STRES THIS ENOUGH, WE NEED TO KEEP DUPLICATE SIGNATURES TO AN ABSOLUTE MINIMUM

If it is in the evening, I will be willing to speak. There was a story about the Gateway expansion in our neighborhood newsletter that came in the mail yesterday. I did not have time to read it yet.

Laura, the meeting will be on Saturday the 24th. Flyers should be there and ready to stand in line around 12 to 12:30... I believe this is a 1st come 1st serve ordeal, so we need to be early ...

only 7 holes plus a practice bucket.. if you don't live near it, like i do, don't waste your time.....

Your willingness to step up to the plate in Open is awesome .
It is people like you that are paving the way for disc golf in the future.. When the PDGA can provide potential sponsors with numbers that reflect a large Open Men's and Womans growth over the past years, that is when things will change...

If 10% of the local advanced players stepped up to open , on average, you would see 5-6 additional cashing spots per event.... That is a number you can sell.....

There is a mini this Wednesday the 21st. WE WILL START AT 6:15 SHARP. If you are not signed up by 6:00pm you are out of luck. NO WHINNERS.

Starting the 7th of March we will be holding the mini weekly ( March 11th is the start of Daylight Savings Time ). Now , not to confuse you - starting the 7th the Mini will start at 6:30pm and you need to be signed up by 6:15pm and no later. This should allow time for people to get there. We will not wait - Others are not going to pay the price for your last minute decision to play. Please plan ahead because when the weather is better and there is more daylight I expect there will be a bigger attendance.

I think 945 is alittle to low. I was at 954 after my first int. tourney, I wasnt ready to play open then. I think somewhere around 965 or 970 would be better. With it that high it will keep the advanced fields strong and the open feilds bigger. My .02

People will spend hours, days, years scratching their heads, " why are we not on ESPN " ????? Simple, there is a small percentage playing professional.. Kind of hard to sell numbers like that to Budweiser, Marlboro, Tide, Sherman Wlliams, etc...... The percentage of players rated 945 or higher actually play on a professional level, they just make amature mistakes...

Look @ the PGA, you literally have hundreds , if not thousands that will never be on a card with Tiger, Phil, Vijay, Sergio etc... Yet all these other golfers , earning last place cash, still earn hundreds of thousands of dollars a year ..... When you provide value to the " PRO " ranks of the PDGA, you will then see the Natural on the cover of Sports Illustrated . Think about it ..... Supply and demand ..

With it that high it will keep the advanced fields strong and the open feilds bigger. My .02

How did the meeting go for the new course? Did you have a good crowd of golfers there to speak?

Warning, as usual, its a long reply.
Overall, we did great!
The meeting was actually an update on the Trinity River Uptown Project and recommendations for improvements at Gateway/Oxbow Parks.
The only speeches on the agenda were from the chair of the Trinitiy River Initiative, JD Granger, the Trinity River Vision Director with the city of Fort Worth, Randle Harwood, and the Tarrant County Water Board Representative, Woody Fosser.
They were there to update the community on the Trinity River Initiative and its impact on the eastside, specifically Gateway Park and Oxbow Park, and to hear community imput on improvements at Gateway Park. That last part is where we come in.
However, the meeting got out of hand before they made it to that part. Some of the other attendees at the meeting were complaining about the Trinity River Initiative and a few other personal biases.
They barely touched on the improvements. Gilbert Casas was able to essentially give his speech, hand in the petitions, and gather a large amount of applause. I was standing at the time, and looked around and saw a number of people applauding his speech.
My assessment on the whole event is as follows:
1. We did great ! We had many people there. We had more people than any other contingent. I believe that made an impact.
2. With the federal/city connections, (JD Granger in charge of the TRI and his momma being the Congresswoman and both being from the eastside of FW), the proposed actions are going to happen.
3. We were heard by the people that mattered. The people making the decisions are not going to be the community members that grumbled loudly and then left. The decisions are going to be made by the three men up front. We were very well received by those three men, especially Randall and JD.
4. The meeting went exactly as I expected. It was the first TRI / Parks meeting ever. However, all governmental meetings are very similar. Unless Gilbert or someone like him had gotten us actually on the agenda prior to the meeting, I knew we would not have 3 minutes each to speak. At most, I expected we may have a total of 3 minutes.
4. It was good that so many showed up. We did make an impact. The problem is with government, it takes chipping away. One meeting will not make a difference.
5. The next action needs to be letters. All the people that had written speeches need to write them in the form of a letter. Mail it to Randall, JD, the Star Telegram letters to the editor, the FW Weekly, and to your representatives -- FW city council, Congresswoman Granger, State Rep Michael Burgess. If these are not your representatives ( they are the representatives for the district in which Gateway Park resides), then write your representatives also. All you have to do is revise your written speech just a little and address it to the Honorable ____, If you need help obtaining addresses, etc, I can do that for you. Same for the newspaper.
6. Lee and PJ were on the channel 8 news. It showed them looking at the maps. Several others were also on the news when the camera panned the audience.
8. I spoke to several of my friends that were in attendance (2 lawyers, 1 judge, Mayor Pro Tem (also the judge's daughter), former city councilwoman, 2 state representatives, and a US congresswoman) I used to play politics prior to disc golf. It si actually more addictive than disc golf to me. Just Saturday's little taste and I want more, more, more. (Ian spit up and almost landed on former City Councilwoman Haskins.)
Anyway, my point is that no one there knew what disc golf was prior to us being there, except Randall. We need to educate our representatives on disc golf. Do this through letters, phone calls, invitations to play, and personal contacts, many of those contacts made by many of us over a prolonged period of time.
7. If we stop here, they will think it was just a few people that thought it was too windy to play, so on a whim all got together at the meeting. We have to prove them wrong and chip away by taking the next steps and following up.
BTW, these park improvements, if all goes as planned, would take place between 3 &amp; 10 years from now.

We did great ! We had many people there. We had more people than any other contingent. I believe that made an impact.

local residents that thought the meeting was about getting more jobs..
couple of bikers..
a whole lot of elderly people
i believe that we were the only large group there that wanted something particular to be added to the park.
everyone else there, i think, was there to get informed on any changes that were done to their "master plan".
we made an impact.

Starting the 7th of March we will be holding the mini weekly ( March 11th is the start of Daylight Savings Time ). Mini will start at 6:00pm and you need to be signed up by 5:55pm and no later. Please plan ahead because when the weather is better and there is more daylight I expect there will be a bigger attendance. We will start at 6:00pm. Sorry if your are late. Call me ahead of time if you are going to be there at 6pm and I'll have you on a card.
