I think scores at Scottsdale will be low this year. Danny has widened the OB, and Vista lost alot of trees last year. The course is a par 64, and I'd guess that we are going to see some scores in the upper 40s if no wind.
And to address the bathroom problem, at least at Vista, Saturday I played with the flu and found all 3 bathrooms, repeatedly!

I am wondering if there will be another release of spots for this tourney, especially on the AM side? I was looking at the entry #'s for last year and noticed that the entries are substantially less for the AM side (37). Did the field play that slow last year? Can we get just a few, maybe 10 players added to the AM field.
I think that if that happens I may just get in......

We took less ams this year, because we have issues at Vista on sat. with a walk-a-thon for cancer going through the park while we are playing. On Sun. we have to be out of the park early because of a concert in the park. Anyone who played last year in advanced will tell you how tough it is to try to drive hole 10 with 500 people standing in the fairway.
You would think reserving the park a year out would fix that, but both cities scheduled something else during our tourney.

I don't know, I thought it made the hole more fun. Bombing huge hyzers over the heads of a couple hundred people staring in amazement probably helped to progress the sport!

Magilla,
Hole 3 will play from orig. course hole 4 to hole 6. 1000'or so par 5, ob same as last year. Hole 4 will be orig. course hole 8 which is the short hole (200'?)orig. next to the old host hotel that throws from the sidewalk down to the drainage ditch with close ob behind and to the side. Hole 5 is orig. course hole 9 about 390' tight fairway ob left and right.
I guess I should have said "some of the holes" are widened. The only widened holes are hole 8 next to dukes bar, par 4, ob on left wider on 1st shot, narrows by hole. Hole 10 same thing, wider 1st shot landing. Hole 11 no drawn ob line on left this time, just sidewalk that comes into play on 2nd or 3rd shots. I think that these combined with the loss of many trees will make for some smokin rounds, unless of course that fun, big arm removin wind comes up and levels the playin field for all :)

The am layout at vista will be slightly different because of the walkathon. 3 of the holes are pretty dangerous because of their proximity to the sidewalk. We normally have barricades up to discourage pedestrians at the north east corner of the park.

The reason I ask is that in 2005 the Ams played Vista -- but only 18 holes and many of them were significantly shorter than the ones the pros played and had less OB. I don't know how it was last year.

Thats awesome there is no mando on hole 3!! There will be some crazy long rollers there now. I think that is a good move. There has been a few issues with kids getting hit in the dayschool or whatever it is on the right. I think (hopefully) it might relieve some of the backups we have experienced there before.

2 things the maps do not show are; on the Fountain Hills map there is a parking lot between holes 4 and 5, and on the Vista course maps, for those who don't know, there are sidewalks that run down each sides of the lake. All sidewalks are OB on or beyond for all pro divisions. Danny said today that he is still considering whether or not to have sidewalks OB for AMs as well. Tee-Times were not posted until February 22nd last year when the event was on March 3-5. That's about 9 days before. Since the Memorial starts on the 2nd this year, I predict a Tee-Time posting of February 21st (also known as this Wednesday) at approximately 11:15 MST.
So you all know, I have nothing to do with the running of the Memorial so what I predict is not likely to be reliable or useful. :p

Donny you know I would love to play with you. My group is already set, so you will have to play really bad to be in my group for the 2nd round. Why I say bad is because my shoulder is even worse than it was at team.
Correction on the ams playing the same course @ Vista as the pros; Ams still may play sidewalks ob, but they will definately play some shorter tees, so now my excuse is still good.
As for the weather; Saturday @ Vista was windy, about 20 mph, with 30mph gusts, temp around 70. Sunday @ the Fountain was great, around 70, no wind, lots of fountain watchers. It looks like the grass is being let to grow, because it was getting a little thick. It will be great if they mow about wed. of next week. Yesterday it rained ALL day, temps around 60. They are calling for rain again this weekend. I have not seen any long range reports, so I hope Magilla is correct.

Donny,
Thanks for your concern.
Actully it's a pinched nerve, and they can't figure out where. It is causing my right shoulder blade to (as the doctor calls it) "wing out".
The medical term is winging scapula(check google). It's caused by pinching the long thorasic nerve. It kills the charge to the muscle that moves the scapula. Now I'm just dragging it with all my other shoulder muscles. You should see it. When I put my arm straight out, you could stick your hand behind my shoulder blade. Looks more painful than it is, but I will take all the free pain medication I can get :D. Basically I can't putt from more than 20', and my drive is limited to about 350'. I can play, but can't lift my arm above my shoulder easily. The doc says about a year to recover if it even will. If not then maybe surgery.

From last year, it was $5 randon draw at like 4pm. No Pros typically play the doubles....95% Ams and its fills up early, so see Dan-O when you get there and sign up...
Yes some pros play and see johnny carroll or floyd not dano as he will not be running doubles most likely. Signup is usually on the dukes patio on the course side of the bar.

Dukes Bar and Grill discounts?
go to restaurant.com and search in Scottsdale for Dukes. They have $10 coupons for $3. Put in code "DINE" in the cart window (after adding them to your cart) and you get each $10 coupon for $1.20. That's a good deal.

Just in case some of you don't click on "Terms and Conditions" at restaurant.com, here are the key points regarding coupon usage...
Limit one (1) redemption per party, per month, per restaurant.
Limit one (1) dining certificate per redemption. Only one dining certificate can be used per party, even if the party is seated at separate tables and/or receives more than one check.
Use of dining certificates for alcoholic beverages is at the sole discretion of the merchant. Merchant agrees to comply with all state laws pertaining to the same.
Dining certificates cannot be combined with any other restaurant certificates, third party certificates, coupons, or promotions.
Dining certificates cannot be used for taxes, tips or prior balances.
No cash value for dining certificates.
No cash back upon redemption or at any other time.
Valid for parties of two (2) or more unless otherwise stated.
Valid for dine in only unless otherwise stated.
Wow, I can't believe I'm so bored that I not only took the time to read the "Terms and Conditions", but went the extra mile to make all of you read it.
If nothing else, I'm now 10 minutes closer to leaving Vegas for the Memorial. I can't wait to leave the wind. It is still as windy today as it was for the GCC.

Since the marshals are typically the ones who post the scores online, and they have other duties as well, they typically get 3-6 cards at once and upload them. At least that's what we did when I was working down there the last couple of years.
There are some Am Scores up now. Pro rounds last year were taking in the 3hr45min to 4hr15min range, IIRC. Seems like the pro women at least should be done by now, but perhaps the marshals are busy taking care of other things or there's computer issues.

True that is another reason I hate the staggered start because the weather isn't the same for everyone but the ratings are.
ck34
Mar 04 2007, 03:16 PM
Weather works perfectly well for shotgun starts. I would prefer not to rate stagger start rounds like the Memorial and USDGC for the weather reason. But I've been trumped by the higher goal to provide PDGA customer service for those players. Stagger start ratings would work better if we split the players into two or three separate groups each day to process ratings. But since players shift groups, courses and times each day, it's up to the TD to report the results that way, and none have.

I looked through the MPO scores that were turned in and 95% of the players shot above thier rating.
Anyway that is a hoTT round. :D

NT, lots of 1000+ rated players...High ratings for all? Nah, never happens ;)

Not possible? Do you think I just made this up? Look at the tour page results and then tell me it "isn't possible".

Yeah, but all the FPO's shot well above their averages (except one shot 1.3 points below). They averaged 25 points above their ratings!! Only 4 rounds that were below their average.
Statistical anomaly, or not?

Ok it was only 75-80% but the people who shot better than thier average shot about 30pts higher and the ones who shot below thier ratings were only like 15pts below thier rating.

It can happen online for unofficial ratings but not in reality. ALWAYS almost exactly the same number of players will end up with ratings higher than their rating and half lower on any layout. It's not possible for it to happen any other way for official ratings. When you see oddities like you're talking about, it just means the course layouts haven't been done properly yet. There's not even a boost factor anymore which did actually produce a few more higher ratings than lower ratings during 2005. But that's gone.
OK, it happened in 2005, but never since! ;)

Why would having a higher player rating indicate any better knowledge of the player rating system? If that was true, Chuck would be an 1100 rated golfer. :)

lol, the rating system is INCREDIBLY flawed, there were more and less wind for different parts of the day, yet they are still on the same rating scale, imo it will never be accurate until weather has a true system of being factored in...
It's up to the TD to note such things in the report. It is not a flaw in the ratings system if you feed it bad data. You know, GIGO: Garbage In, Garbage Out.

This was the best run Memorial I have ever been to. Congrats to Dan Ginnely, The AZ Disc Golf Club, Discraft, the PDGA, and Gaff for a job well done. And Keith M as always. :)
This event has been getting better and better the last couple of years and ran super smooth for the ams this year.
Thanks everybody! Please keep it going. I know it's usually only the whiners who speak up, but there were a whole lot of us who loved the way things went.

Great tourney!! I had a blast! Thank you to everyone who helped out in any way!!
The reason the ratings are screwy, is because the weather was inconsistent all weekend. It would either be calm in the morning and pick up throughout the day (Fri.) or be windy in the morning and calm down for the afternoon(Sat + today).

The weather doesn't mean the ratings calcs will be screwy, just that some players may get a few more or less points than they expected for their score. The good news is that everyone will get the same rating for the same score in a round.

This was my first Memorial, but I also had a great time! The courses were set up tough but fair and the wind made them even tougher. Sometimes it seemed as if the wind direction swirled around the lake and ponds so that you always had a headwind...
Kudos to the tournament staff for the schedule and starting tee juggling they did to fit the Saturday and Sunday rounds in, considering the other park uses. It was a bit strange for the Ams to start on hole #12 at Vista on Saturday and #9 at Fountain on Sunday, but those changes allowed us to avoid the Walk-a-thon folks Saturday and the concert goers (mostly) on Sunday. Way to go to maximize use of the facilities. Thanks for the great event.

The Wind was a big factor for some , while others were able to tee before or after the Wind.
Mother Nature just did not want me to have it easy for this tournament. Kinda tough to make those 30 footers with 30-60 mile per hour winds !!!!! :p
I had Big Winds blowing every single round I played. Just something I was forced to deal with. /msgboard/images/graemlins/ooo.gif
:o
Had nothing to do with the Cool way the tournament was run , great Staff , Nice food and drink spot at Duke's Bar & Grill , great store next door , Spinners on the Green to buy disc's , shirts , Bicycles etc... Overall , I had a great time and met a bunch of great players. Thanks to all the Sponsors , Staff , Dan-O , Zak , DiscGolf TV , Discraft and the spotters and those guys fishing disc's out of those Dirty water lakes !!!!!!
Looks like I'll be punished for my tee times ?
I did witness a Brawl before I tee'd off during the day. Some just don't get it when the course is closed to the general public for a Major event. No one was hurt badly.
I heard some didn't get their players packs and they ran out of other Discraft discs. I was one of them , but I was given a $ 12.00 discount on plastic they had there for sale.
That's about it for the Negative stuff , which was not really that bad. Some of the stuff from the Discraft factory was apparently lost by UPS , so that was not in the control of the tournament folks. Players were made aware of this inconvienence.
Fun Party spot at Flicka's Bar & Grill on Saturday night. They served for all the players in attendance , Tri-tip , mashed potatoes , Carrots , Bow-tie pasta , Salad and Drinks !!!!! Very Cool !!!!!
Seen some OUTSTANDING Disc Golf the Pro's were puting on for the gallery's !!!!! WOW , can those guys crank some drives or what !!!!!!!
Sun was out all weekend and I got a great tan !!!!!!

So the punishment is the better or worse ratings, not the actual wind anymore? If you play well enough to be in the top groups, your experince will be equivalent. If not, then your experience will be equivalent to those who have been playing at your level. The only "unfairness" with stagger starts is the random first draw. if players wer ranked by ratings at the start, it would actually make it more fair from the standpoint of similar weather conditions for those playing at the same level. that's one reason shotgun starts are more fair.

Thanks Chris and Schweb. I will be out about a month or so, and I may have to change my grip a lilltle. I think the dry desert air made it worse, alot of players were having similar issues.
The event was awesome! Dan Ginnely and his staff from the Arizona Disc Golf Club run a great event and a great party. I just wish it wasn't so windy!

Not so true , it also depends on your division and the random player levels.

Not if Feldberg started 4 hours different from Climo and 2 hours different from Rico. If the weather varies widely, it could affect the outcome more than if they had been on the course in different groups in a shotgun format.

15-25mph difference will make ratings screwy, Period.

Barsby, you've been one of the biggest whiners regarding ratings. Worry more about your game and overcoming challenges like the wind and it's apparent you've got the developing skills to become an elite player.
Even under the windiest conditions the ratings variance won't be more than about 4 shots BETWEEN shotgun rounds, and during stagger rounds like the Memorial it will average out over the 100 players to affect ratings no more than 15-20 points within a round. And those playing together and nearby groups are affected the same. So who plays better and worse in those groups is not impacted unfairly by the wind. I've already said I would be glad to eliminate doing ratings in stagger start rounds. If enough players complain, maybe the ratings committee and Board will stop them.
It's apparent that the wind didn't hurt the ratings of the top 30 players including you where all but 4 played above their rating. In fact, the wind actually helps the ratings of the top players who can typically handle wind better than lower rated players and increases their score differential/ratings even more than calm conditions. Maybe with more strength training those "weaker" players like Barry, Avery and Sinclair, who shot below their rating, will be able to throw farther and better in the wind... riiiight.
Jeff_LaG
Mar 06 2007, 11:09 AM
Yea, seriously! Why don't you focus more on wind play and winning the tournament you were leading after the first round than something trivial like a 23-round streak of 1000+ rated rounds.

Fountain conditions were wicked for the pros. 20-30 mph for all the Open players. It seemed like it let up a bit for the very end of the round for the lead cards, but it was probably only the last 2 holes that it was a noticeable decline. I think that's what he might be referring to.
Good shooting Barsby. Great finish.

That round should be entered as a 999 on the TD report. If it actually goes thru, I assume that's more than 100 points below your rating and would get dropped anyway? :D

Chuck...
Why cant the ratings be broken down by Division ??
OR at least split the field in 1/2 or 1/3.....
There are more than enough propagators....

The good news is that everyone will get the same rating for the same score in a round.
How is that GOOD news???
A 58 at the Fountain Sat Morn is equal to about a 52 in the afternoon with the way the weather changed....
Same with Vista on Sunday..........but switched....
The event itself was AWESOME...as always...I just wish I could keep my disc between the lines... :(
